Starting point is 00:00:00 Much larger than life. Yeah. Lunch timers is the Matt Thomas show. H-Town, what's happening in lunchtimmers. Good afternoon to you and welcome to a Tuesday edition of the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790 alongside Rossville or Yale. Nick, hello, I'm Matt Thomas. have you with us where today we will get into at least teasing a little bit of Texans versus
Starting point is 00:00:43 Chiefs. We will at least get into a little bit of how the Texans are going to stop Travis Kelsey and Tyree Kill in the same game. And a happy Pat Mahomes. We're going to at least tease a little bit sports every and how the Texans absolutely without a doubt cannot afford to fall behind 16 nothing to a team like the Kansas City Chiefs because 16 to nothing, I think because of Kansas City's prolific offense becomes 23-0 before you know it. Yeah, you cannot if you come out, and a lot
Starting point is 00:01:15 of it has to do with Buffalo Bill's defense being one of the better ones in the NFL. You cannot get into the hole that you did because what's going to happen is you keep scoring, you're not going to be able to stop Kansas City. You have to keep pace or you even have to get ahead and build a lead and then
Starting point is 00:01:31 kind of hang on and hope for the best. I don't know if the over-under-number has fluctuated much, whatever it is, I would think the Texans would like it to be the under in order for them to win the game. Although when they two teams played it was a highest scoring affair, I would expect to be the exact same
Starting point is 00:01:47 thing. Lots to get to... I'm going to guess it's around 50. I'm going to go 55. Ooh, that's a little high. Fifty-one. Okay. I think if the number, I think if the total points, here's a little Nostra Thomas for you. Okay. If the score is under that number,
Starting point is 00:02:03 the Texans win the football game. I think it's over. I think it's a comfortable Kansas City victory. So they're predicting about 30 and a half to 21? Pretty much. Because it's nine and a half is the spread still at this point. All right. Lots to get to on the radio show besides the text and stuff. And again, we will get obviously a lot closer and closer to the matchup. We're going to check it in Kansas City both tomorrow and Thursday. We'll stay home today with our buddy Aaron
Starting point is 00:02:32 Reese and the Athletic, get his thoughts on things. We also have some. We also have some some interesting news in baseball to get to today, which is going to get quite a bit of time. Oh, okay. Eric Tim's getting signed. That's what you mean? That wasn't what I was thinking, but that's not a bad – I mean, I guess we could bring it up, but it probably would not be until segment 19. There are also some very interesting NFL news involving coaches. So where do you – so we got Texans.
Starting point is 00:03:00 We will obviously mix in throughout the course of the show. Let's go to the – let's go to the NFL news today. Matt Rule. Who, I mean, remember I told you what a great hire that was when he left Temple? Yes. Because if you can win at Temple, you can win anywhere. Temple is inner city, Philadelphia. I mean, you know, for those that people that think that the University of Houston has apathy,
Starting point is 00:03:22 I met with people in Houston, Temple, it's tenfold. In Philadelphia, it's Penn State and everybody else is a way distant second. In fact, I'd be safe to say there were more Pittsburgh fans in Philadelphia than there were Temple fans in Philadelphia. he won there. And he got the job of Baylor. And the first year he wins a game. Then they go to what, six and six last year.
Starting point is 00:03:44 And this year they're playing in the Sugar Bowl. I mean, three amazing years, well, three, two amazing years. Guy's got great NFL pedigree. He's turned around two football programs.
Starting point is 00:03:55 And now he is the head football coach of the Carolina Panthers. Your speech is, I mean, the assent that he has made, congratulations to him. I mean, he's won everywhere he's went.
Starting point is 00:04:09 you turned around, I mean, that Baylor program, I mean, you're talking about not winning at Temple? How about, I mean, winning in Waco, Texas, after everything that happened? First and foremost, I believe it is difficult to win in Waco. It's just going to have its limits. I don't care how much Dreden's playing the players. The views expressed by Sports Harvey do not reflect those.
Starting point is 00:04:32 That was a joke. Yeah, I don't need Baylor fan coming in at us. But he did it. He won in two very difficult places. especially after what had happened with the Baylor situation. So he goes on to the NFL and he's with Carolina. He's got NFL pedigree. Apparently from what I was reading this morning,
Starting point is 00:04:49 the Carolina Panthers kept up in the dollar amount because he was supposed to go talk with the New York Giants. So the New York Giants hire a coach today, which the name I had never heard of before my entire life. What's his name? Mike Judge is the guy that did King of the Hill and Beavis and Butthead. And office space. It's not an MTV theater store.
Starting point is 00:05:09 It's Joe Judge, not to be confused with Joe George, the producer in the afternoon, so 790. So Joe Judge is the new coach of the New York Giants. Yes. There is a big time rumor out there beyond Joe Judge signing with the New York Giants that his offensive coordinator might be Gary Kubiak. Jason Garrett. What?
Starting point is 00:05:34 That wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. Jason Garrett's done decent as an OC. I think Jason Garrett will have a long-term 10. year as a coach in the national football league. He's just going to. I just don't know if it'll ever be in a, well, he might get another head coaching spotting it, but he's going to have to go. He's going to have to go get his mojo back a little bit. And if he turns Daniel Jones into a good quarterback and the Giants become a better football team, and if they happen to beat the Dallas Cowboys, their in division opponent once or twice, that might help the cause.
Starting point is 00:06:01 Joe Judge has been the special teams coordinator with the Patriots since 2015, and last year he was the special teams coordinator slash wide receivers coach. Yeah. So he obviously is very highly thought of because he's going from a position of coach to a head coach of one of the more recognizable NFL teams. Well, he's also had a stop at Alabama. So you go under Sabin, under Belichick. That's about as good as it's going to get from success standpoint. But obviously, a lot of the Bill Belichick people from the coaching tree in his coaching tree haven't been super successful.
Starting point is 00:06:36 No. But Mike Vrable is successful. Yeah, he beat Bill. Bill Belichick. No kidding. Bill O'Brien. And Bill O'Brien is in the coaching tree. He beat Bill Belichick.
Starting point is 00:06:46 I don't think you guys really care what I say. Just like I don't really care what you say. I think they put up the graphic on Saturday. It's something like five of the last nine times that Belichick has lost. It's been to somebody who is a former assistant of his. Well, that's just going to be a matter of time because there's so many assistants. They're everywhere. At some point, somebody's going to have to be.
Starting point is 00:07:03 Pepper the league. Yeah. Well, Mike Ravel wasn't a coach under Belichick, though. So wouldn't he be the Bill O'Brien coaching tree? I think so. O'Brien have a coaching tree? Yeah. Just one limb. Well, it's, yeah, it's Vable and it's Jack Easterby. No, it's under the, it's really the Jack Easterby coaching tree. Is it? Yeah. Well, Easterby wasn't here when Vable was, was he? No, he wasn't. But they're all tied into Patriots somehow, somewhat. At the end of the day, it's always about the Patriots.
Starting point is 00:07:30 It's the Patriots coach. Is it? So it's the Robert Kraft tree. That's true. That's true. All right. So we want to give you a little bit of the news on that. We have some breaking, not necessarily breaking news, but some interesting news. news from baseball coming up. We'll tell you about that in the next segment of the show. But really for me, if we put the Houston Buffalo game to bed, is there anything else that we need any afterthought? Because, you know, sometimes when you drive, like I drive to Kingwood from here and it's a, I had to go to my daughter's volleyball,
Starting point is 00:07:58 so it was about a 50-minute drive yesterday. I remember almost an hour. And I think about the show about things we could have done, should have said, do we need to still mention? Do we need to put a bow, wrap it up on the Buffalo? Is there anything else that needs to be. said, and we can probably clear that out between now and 1.30 when before Aaron Reese joins us,
Starting point is 00:08:15 because I'll just say this. Watching the sports centers last night and going back and looking at some of the plays in the game against the bills, Ross, I still don't know how Deshawn escaped the two-headed monster sack.
Starting point is 00:08:30 To throw the ball to all people, Taiwan Jones. And that Bill O'Brien yesterday said there's a package of plays for Taiwan Jones. I mean, if there was a package of plays for people, Taiwan Jones would have been like, man, can y'all just throw one play? I mean, I'll take one of Duke Johnson's plays. I'll run a route that Carlos Hyde might run. That to tell me that Carlo, that Taiwan Jones has a series of plays that are especially for him
Starting point is 00:08:57 is astonishing. It's probably a very small package. But whatever it was, it worked. Well, I mean, that play wasn't designed for him. He was just, he was looking for a safety valve and he happened to be there. So that's good. And now that he made he make the catch with the limited opportunities he was given. He also ran it for a boltload of yards after that, too, setting up the field goals, setting up that there was no need to worry about scrambling to Sean Watson or throwing one more pass.
Starting point is 00:09:23 When Taiwan Jones was tackled, you were inside the five-yard line. All you had to do is make sure your special team did this job when it did, and you advanced. And by the way, I had so many friends of mine, we were in volleyball practice yesterday, came up to me and said, was Josh Allen okay? and I said, you know what, either you were listening to the show or you saw the same vibe. I really do believe he was concussed because he made some of the biggest boneheaded decisions. Now, granted, it was his first playoff game, only a second year in the NFL, pressures a lot. But there were some moments there that you were just shaking your head going, you know what, you are helping the cause. Now, a great pass rush ultimately put Josh in those positions.
Starting point is 00:10:04 But to still have him get called for an intentional grounding, for him to take a sack, for him to lose the foot. football on multiple occasions. It was just a meltdown that the Texans fortunately took advantage of. Yeah, he had a huge hand in helping the Texans get backed in. And I don't, I think, I mean, we're just speculating here. It wouldn't shock me at all if he was concussed. We're talking about after that big hit he took from Zach Cunningham, right? So here's the thing.
Starting point is 00:10:29 Can Zach Cunningham, Whitney Marshall's Judge E.J. Watt interrogate Pat Mahomes the same way that they went after Josh Allen. Here's probably. Well, what you're saying as you're driving around is, oh, please, Matt, can they do that? But the problem is Pat Mahomes is 25 times a quarterback Josh Allen is. And then some. And then some. Probably need to go for the knee instead of the head on him. Well, he's been hurt before down there.
Starting point is 00:10:56 Just saying. We're not talking bounties over here. I was going to say, when did Greg Williams start producing the show? What is his bounty talk 790? Come on now. I don't have much money to throw in. No, you stay out of it. You got foul.
Starting point is 00:11:08 You got mouths to feed. 713-212-5-7-90. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90. Some developing news on alleged cheating involving the Astros. And here's a surprise, another team. Details on that in a moment. 12-12 is our time. If you'd like to join us, 7-1-3-212-5-7-90, 7-1-3-2-5-7-90.
Starting point is 00:11:33 It is the Matt Thomas show. We appreciate you listening to Sports Talk 790. Don't leave Matt Thomas in your car. Take him with you. Download the free Iheart Radio app for your phone at sports790.com. Just remember you'll have to feed him. Hey, this Sunday, we are going to go to Luckies downtown and watch the Texans against the Chiefs. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:12:05 It's a little 790 watch party. And we're just going to hang out, drink some beers. I am on day two of no carbs. and I'm very cranky. So I'll be eating a hamburger wrapped in lettuce. If you see me even attempt to bite a slice of pizza, admonish me, scold me, whatever you have to do. You can get like a Sunday cheat day.
Starting point is 00:12:25 No. And my life's been in nothing but a cheat. I think you should do one day a week cheat day. I'll help you keep your sanity. I think if I can do it for 10 or 11 days without having any carbs, I won't miss them. Right now I'm in terrible carb mismode. Okay. I'm just trying to help.
Starting point is 00:12:41 and I want to have some Mick Ultras. So that's a little card. Oh, okay. So I'm going to have some. I'm going to have some carbs. That's drinking the heavy stuff. Get me a Mickal old ultra. Yeah, I'll be the,
Starting point is 00:12:52 I'll be the soberest one in the group, I think, if I'm drinking those. You're probably going to be soberest for one of the group now, matter what. That's true. All right, so Lucky's Downtown. That is on St. Emmanuel. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Game starts at 2 o'clock. I'd recommend getting there a little earlier around 115, 130, the very latest. That's when I'll be there. Ross, you'll be there whenever. I'll be there when a guy. get there. Yep. Uber. I mean... Oh, I'm Ubering. I'm not. It's too expensive from Kingwood. So I'll sober up. Maybe you have some pizza. Oh, okay. So sober up later. You stay with me again. I'll crank the, uh, the thermostat down.
Starting point is 00:13:24 Perfect. So come on and see us. We'll be out there. And, uh, we might bring some, we got to figure bring some prizes or something. I got a ton of, uh, because when I was going out to Twin Peaks every week, I got, you know, the little stress balls and T-shirts and I got a lot of that. You know what? I, I was cleaning my garage out the other day. And I have some, uh, 10, 20,000 and Twitter follower shirts that I found. Oh, what about Good Morning Strippers? Yes, I've got both. So I'll bring whatever I have left.
Starting point is 00:13:47 Wow, people who want one of those. Yeah. Although I went and got my car wash today, and we're going back to the sports and I went and got my car wash yesterday and I had the Good Morning Shipper's shirt on. And I'm telling you, the dirty looks I get are intense. I don't think nobody's reading your shirt. Why are people so, they're hypocritical? They're uptight.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Because I wouldn't say everyone, but at least all of us, most of us grown-ass men have been to at least one or two strip clubs in our life. I think I've been once. You've been once this week. Point being is that we've all gone. We know what they are. It's a joke. It's a shirt.
Starting point is 00:14:22 Just relax. Most people don't get the joke. Well, they need to. Listen to the show. Get the joke. Move it forward. All right. So, yesterday, or late this morning,
Starting point is 00:14:36 Ken Rosenthal over at the athletic. And by the way, every writer is moving the athletic now. ESPN and SI are running out of people. They're all athletic people. Put out a tweet today that said that Major League Baseball is investigating the use of sign stealing and cameras. It's just very much what the Astros are being accused of with the Boston Red Sox of 2018. Ross, what are the Red Sox do in 2018? They won the World Series.
Starting point is 00:15:05 They defeated the Astros in the American League Championship due to a bunch of bad calls. Thanks, Joe West. Well, I can say that. It just makes it feel better. And did you know who the manager was of the 2018 Boston Red Sox? Terry Francona? Nope. Alex Cora.
Starting point is 00:15:24 Alex Cora, who by the way, was the bench coach of the Houston Astros when they won the World Series in 2017. So are we six degrees of separation like Kevin Bacon, or are we just connecting the dots, whatever you want to call it? The Boston Red Sox are being accused. And this will be the second time the Red Sox have been accused. Remember they're the ones with the Apple Watches earlier? Yes. It goes back to the grandiose point of everybody's cheating. It's just, are you getting caught?
Starting point is 00:15:54 Well, the Boston Red Sox are now under the same investigational tools that the Houston Astros are. The Red Sox a few minutes ago putting out a release and I want to get it to you here. I'll read it verbatim. But point being is this. they are absolutely facing the same sort of interrogation that the Astros are. Quote from the Red Sox. We were recently made aware of allegations suggesting the inappropriate use of our video replay room. This is a room that's next to the dugout where guys can go look at their swings and that kind of thing in a very short notice.
Starting point is 00:16:26 We take these allegations seriously and will fully cooperate with MLB as they investigate the matter. You know what they didn't do? They didn't say we are going to fight these charts. charges. They didn't say that there's obviously been miscommunication. They're basically doing what the Astros are doing and saying, all right, if you caught us, we better be pretty forthcoming with this, knowing that we're not the only ones doing it, and we might throw somebody else under the bus while we're discussing it. And that's why I think, I have a feeling that the 2007, the investigation of the 2017 Astros did put the 2018 Red Sox, especially
Starting point is 00:17:07 especially with Alex Korah as their manager in a spot to say, okay, maybe this is not just happening with one baseball team. And we've been saying that all along. We knew there were multiple teams doing it. It was just being a matter of who was going to get caught and who was not. It looks like the Red Sox are going to get caught. So the Red Sox apparently are going to be next on the list. Then Jeff Passon, who writes for ESPN, who Adam Clanton, we love, you can catch him three to six, thinks that. Think that Jeff Passon has it out for the Astros.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Yes, he does. You think he does? I think he thinks that. Do you think he? I don't know that he does. I'm going to be really brutally honest with you. Jeff Passon sat next to me during the American League Championship Series. Jeff Passon does nothing for me.
Starting point is 00:17:48 I mean, he's not, he may be a mover and shaker in the baseball sports reporter's business. But most people, when you walk around the street, you go to a bar, like, we go to Luckies. Hey, y'all know Jeff Passon is. You will get a tremendous amount of blank stairs. Somebody, I heard from somebody that he was openly. cheering in the press box. Is that true or false? Because you sat next to him, right? I sat next to him for, there were
Starting point is 00:18:12 four home, three home games, and I sat next to him for all three. I don't, I remember seeing that. So he didn't know. He wasn't openly cheering. Not on my watch. Not when I was there. You were next to him for three games, I mean, we would know. No, yeah, no open to and cheering. Okay. So I was lied to. Okay. But I mean, put it this way. Do you think a national baseball reporter covering a series
Starting point is 00:18:33 on a network's dime would go to a particular ballpark, whether it be Minutemade or Fenway or Yankee Stadium and openly root for one team or the other. No, I didn't think that, but I was told that. It might happen. It just wasn't what I was watching. So Jeff Passon comes out today. This is about probably an hour after Ken Rosenthal says what he says,
Starting point is 00:18:57 and says that Major League Baseball is starting to wrap up their investigation on the Astros. and that it's probably going to come down within the next two weeks and that the rumors are that there could be some serious, serious suspensions and heavy fines levy towards the Astros. Gasping. Who's gasping? America. I think honestly, and we were talking about this with Brian Erickson, our programmer on the state, it might be more outside the city of Houston than inside the city of Houston.
Starting point is 00:19:41 Does that make sense to you? That maybe America is waiting for the Astros to get dinged more so than the Astro fan base is. Meaning that whatever we find out and whatever we get, whatever the suspension, if there is one, it's going to sting more on a national front than people calling up our radio show going, our Astros are done. Our Astros are gonzo. Here is his exact tweet. Discipline against the Houston Astros for using technology to cheat is likely to come
Starting point is 00:20:12 within the next two weeks. And those in the crosshairs expected to be harsh. Long suspensions are likely. Wow. Who's caught in the crosshairs? Are you in the crosshairs? Have you ever been in a crosshair before? No.
Starting point is 00:20:24 That sounds a little freaky. I mean, no, that's just... No, I've not been caught in any crosshairs. What's freaky about it? It's just a weird term. You know, like y'all would make fun of me for saying first blush? Okay. Caught in the crosshairs?
Starting point is 00:20:38 I didn't make fun of you for that. Nick did. Nick did. Nick, do you think getting caught in the crosshairs is a little bit of an odd phrase? No. Of course you know. I completely understand that. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:49 Get Mr. Keturion over here. You're making me nervous as an alleycat right now. I bet you are. All right. So I will, I'll throw this out. We've got a lot of the football stuff to get to between now and three o'clock as well. But for you as an astro fan, and look, we understand.
Starting point is 00:21:03 we understand that we've got a huge baseball audience on the show that would love to talk baseball 24-7. So I'll throw this out right now at 713-212-5-790. Whatever happens, are you prepared to live with it and just say, okay, it is what it is? Or do you think that when the suspensions come down, if there are any, you will be in catatonic, oh my God, what the hell happened to our baseball team mode? the opinion of at least a couple people in the office is this will have more of a stinging national ripple than it will in Houston.
Starting point is 00:21:41 Agree or disagree. I think, yeah, it'll... Let's just play a little fake audience here coming out. I'll give you what the suspension could be, not saying that I'm going to get, I'm just going to just throw one out, and then you're going to give me your first plus reaction. And I think it's going to be a lot different
Starting point is 00:21:58 what the local folks would say, and I'm talking about me, I'm talking about just fans, anybody in general, then it would be in the national. national side. 713212-5-790 if you'd like to join us. Will the national perception of the Astros be greater or take a bigger hit than the local? I would say the answer to that is yes. Do you agree or disagree? 7-13-212-5-790. Watson. I feel like the player saved his job.
Starting point is 00:22:23 We have much bigger goals. If Watson doesn't play like Superman, can they win? No, cheese. We've been before. Sports talk 790. Good times here in Houston. Real Texas. I love what you guys don't talk here. All right, we're going to get back on the Texans here in a matter of moments because we've got a divisional playoff game to get to. And we will go to Kansas City both tomorrow and Thursday to get just the feel of things from a couple of different Kansas City reporters and radio folks.
Starting point is 00:22:57 713-212-5-790 if you'd like to get in on the show today. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-9-0. Zero. Ross, so I said, all right, I'm going to pretend for a moment that I am the commissioner, Rob Manfred, and I will announce the suspensions right now. And again, this is just, I hope I'm wrong. This is just me doing it. Passon says they're going to be harsh. I'm going to tell you that Jeff Leno and AJ Hinch will be suspended for an entire season. Wow. Okay. What does local guy say? What does local fan call the show? Local guy says this is unfair. Every other team is doing it. This is, I mean, this is part of the game. If you're not cheating, you're not trying. Why don't we
Starting point is 00:23:42 investigate everybody else? What's going to happen to the Yankees? The Astros are being unfairly targeted and Houston is always getting the shaft. Another hit towards a Houston team, which really isn't the case. Houston doesn't have a share, have a history of cheating. It doesn't. On pro sides, We've never had... Well, I mean, the University of Houston Cougars had to vacate some wins because they were cheating and having people take tests. That was a massive form of miscommunication on that one, right?
Starting point is 00:24:11 Oh, yeah? Miss community wrote the wrong name on the test. But of the pro teams. We haven't had players that have been heavily suspended. I mean, Roger Clemens was here. Andy Pettett was here. You can go on that if you want to go to the steroids. Of course, there's the implication on Jeff Bagwell,
Starting point is 00:24:28 but no evidence, or he wasn't on the Mitchell report or anything like that. in terms of concrete absolute 100% suspensions for any of the local teams really Boston has well the Patriots of course yeah so if we investigated the Boston Bruins you think they would find a bunch of nasty stuff in there maybe illegally lubricating their skates and stuff can you is that a thing I don't know I don't know anything about hockey I don't want you to say lubricate in skates ever again hmm man if you get you get a
Starting point is 00:24:58 segment suspension all right so I say a year I say a year I say a year year to year. You just gave me the local perspective. But will there be enough people that will be so outrageous that they think it's going to affect the team or they're going to say, hey, it's Springer, it's Altuve, it's Breggman, it's Verlander, it's Granky. You know what? Matt Thomas could be the manager. That team in 195. That's my feeling. I mean, we've argued, we've disagreed a little bit. I mean, we've kind of disagreed not as much as we would think. The degree of how much a manager matters. The manager matters. Absolutely does.
Starting point is 00:25:30 but the talent matters most to me in baseball especially talent wins out but the only reason why you can go out there and fill out a lineup card man you can't right well the only reason why i think you and i disagree a little bit on this is because baseball players are creatures of habit they are of all the sports they are the most routine people they get up at a certain time they eat at a certain time they get to the ballpark at a certain time they hit they go hit in the batting cage at a certain time They check their phone. They play cards. They want to hear from their manager. And again, I think if either one, and Jeff's different because Jeff is not in the clubhouse
Starting point is 00:26:11 every day. But if AJ gets a massive bump, a suspension, who member is going to take that role? It's going to take a while for that person to join that club. As much as a bench coach has been around, it's not the same as a manager. As much as Gary Pettis has been the third base coach, if Gary was named manager for the season. It's just, or 50 or 100 games. It's just a different vibe. And I think sometimes players in with baseball teams can be affected by the clubhouse vibe changing.
Starting point is 00:26:42 And I think clearly that would, it would affect it. Do I think the Astros will still be the prohibitive favorite to win the American League West? Absolutely. But as it stands right now, they're probably not the favorites to win the whole American League because of what the Yankees have done this offseason. So the question is going to be, does a potential A.J. Hinch suspension, and hopefully it doesn't become to that. Does it further separate the gap, the perceived gap between the Yankees and the Astros in 2020? You don't think it is. I think so. I mean, I think it's not huge. I think it could be, it could be more than I think people are willing to let on to be. I mean, it's, you know, you're going to have spring training.
Starting point is 00:27:21 You're going to have a month of games where the manager, hell, I don't even want to, you know what, I don't know. I hope to what I'm hoping I'm discussing is not a possibility. Selfishly, I mean, I'm going to peel the curtain back because this is we do on the Matt Thomas show. AJ Hitch is a terrific interview. Yes, he is. And the thing about not having him on, even for a week, a month, an entire season depresses me a little bit. But if Passon, and look, Jeff Passon's connected. He may be a dork, and you may not respect the guy.
Starting point is 00:27:55 You may think he is openly rooting for the Astros to get a heavy penalty, but Jeff Passon is pretty connected. It is what it is. He's connected in the baseball world. So when he put stuff out, he's pretty much, I don't think he's doing it because he's looking for more webheads. I think he's doing it because he's got some juicy information. And also he says players are not being targeted for discipline,
Starting point is 00:28:16 just front office and on-field personnel. Which would be the manager, right? Yes. My guess is this. I think Cora is in trouble. I think AJ's in trouble. I think Jeff's in trouble. And I wouldn't be surprised of old Carlos Beltron's name
Starting point is 00:28:33 doesn't get thrown in the mix as in this as well. I agree. I mean, this could be, this is Domino 2, I guess, to fall. Maybe there's going to be even more. Yeah. And again, the reason we're bringing this up is because passing reporting today that could be within two weeks. Ross, we're going to get an email or we're going to get a tweet.
Starting point is 00:28:51 Press release. Press release saying press conference will be held. And we're going to carry the press conference live, what time of the day it is, and we're going to sit and we're going to get a notepad at, and we're going to write everything down, and be scared to death. You're talking about a Rob Manfred Press conference? Yeah, yeah, because here's the thing. And for anybody that says, well, I don't care, you would care if it was the Angels doing it.
Starting point is 00:29:18 Yep. You would care if the Rangers did it. The Yankees. You'd care about any team that was trying to get over your team. Just like we cared many moons ago, Ross, when the New England Patriots, were cheating on the New York Jets. Flat out cheating. And by the way, the New England Patriots are going to get dinged for that, quote-unquote,
Starting point is 00:29:37 behind the scenes of the documentary. Documentary in the Cincinnati Bengals. They're going to get dinged for it as well. It's cheating. It's like college athletics. You keep doing it until you get caught. And then when you get caught, you put a release out that says we're going to fully cooperate. Just like the Boston Red Sox did today.
Starting point is 00:29:56 Just like we thought that was going to happen. Just like the Houston Astros didn't. Just like the Houston Astros weren't the only one. ones that were being accused of such improprieties. Just like the Carlos Correa quotes from a couple of days ago. We're cooperating. We're doing everything we can. And that's that.
Starting point is 00:30:11 And then after you get caught, you go right back to cheating in a different form. No, no, you know, I don't know. Well, if you're the Patriots. If you're the Patriots, yes. That's what the Red Sox did. Hopefully the Astros. Well, yeah, the Red So it's really Boston teams. Yes.
Starting point is 00:30:23 Everybody else learns their lesson. Boston teams just don't learn a lesson. 713-212-5-790. Greg Bizio here, the heart of the order is up right now. Matt Thomas is swinging for the fences here on Sports Talk 790. All right. Our time is 1247. It is the Matt Thomas show.
Starting point is 00:30:56 And again, the $64,000 question, which I think has been asked to Bill O'Brien each and every week for, I don't know, 15, 16 weeks so far as how do you get off to a faster start against teams? And he was asked about that against Kansas City. Yeah, you know, that's been, you guys know it. I mean, you're right. I mean, you guys have asked me about that all year. We've got to figure that out. This is not the type of game on the road versus this type of team that we can, you know, do that. We've got to try to do whatever we can to get off to a good start.
Starting point is 00:31:28 I don't think it's all about the start. I don't think it's all about the finish. I think it's about 60 minutes, but which I think we proved that the other day, that you have to play 60 plus minutes sometimes to win a game. But I do think that we have to, you know, come out of the gates ready to go. I believe we were ready to go the other day. Buffalo did a great job in all three phases, especially their defense did a great job.
Starting point is 00:31:52 And we adjusted at halftime, tried to do some things differently. And we were able to come out. But we can't start that way. Can't start that way. Wow, he was really, he doubled down on that. Can't start that way. Yes. I don't, you know, look, I've never been in an NFL war room.
Starting point is 00:32:10 I don't know how the first 10 plays are drawn up typically. everybody's going to have a different philosophy on it. I guess he's... Bless you. Thank you. But it is troubling. But yet, are we making too much of it that a team that has won
Starting point is 00:32:26 10 regular season games, won a wild card game? One of those 10 regular season victories came in Kansas City against a very good chief's team. Granted, Pat Mahomes is not 100%. But do we make too much of the fact they're not scoring early in contest? Or should we be giving
Starting point is 00:32:41 Bill O'Brien tons of praise for making great in-game adjustments. I think he'd be the first one to tell you that he's a better second-half coach and he's a first-half coach, right? That was good. That worked out good. I think so. The one thing I saw from him, and granted, we didn't see a whole lot of glimpses of Bill O'Brien during the game, is that he didn't show signs of sweat.
Starting point is 00:33:06 He was probably very nervous. He was probably really scared to death about another first-round loss. But it wasn't... Do you think he became a different play caller in the second half or was a different play caller when they were down 16? I think, no, I don't think so at all. I was being facetious. But there is a problem, I mean, to me, those are the times of, those are the times where a coach's play calling prowess should be shining through. Is at the very beginning of the game, when you have stuff that you can, that you want to confuse the other team with and you want to surprise them and you're trying to get, of course,
Starting point is 00:33:45 course, different looks at different formations and how the other team is combating that. So, I mean, I feel like you should be able to score on the first drive of the game if you're a good play caller and a good game plan. Come on now, guys, don't make that a big deal today. The element of surprise is there, and that's when you should be making your hay. Mike, weren't we all, I mean, let's be honest, we were all very impressed that Josh Allen goes out and catches the first pass in the end zone for a touchdown. I mean, that was innovation.
Starting point is 00:34:11 That was wild. The Texans better be ready for anything today. Yeah, I thought it was impressive. But here's the thing. As we say all that, the bread and butter of the Texans has been Deshaun escaping a pass rush, Deshawn finding guys in the flat, and Deshaun having this great ability to find DeAndre Hopkins getting involved in the second half of games to make 15, 20, 20, 25-yard catches. I mean, it's kind of the same formula, right? Have the Texans, and again, every game's going to have a different new one.
Starting point is 00:34:44 nuance to it. But when the Texans win games, we know exactly how they do it. It's not been a night where they've caused four interceptions and turned two touchdowns back. It hasn't been because they've had two kickoff returns for a score. It's been Deshawn. I mean, if you were to take a look at the 10 bylines of the Texans 11 victories this year, how many of those games, those 11 involved Deshawn Watson avoiding a pass rush, avoiding a sack, and completing a pass deep down the field in order for the Texans to win a game? That's a pretty, familiar storyline. Probably a lot of them, except for, I mean,
Starting point is 00:35:17 a couple of the blowout ones. I mean, the Jaguars, the Falcons, where, I mean, they blew out the Falcons because Sean Watson threw five touchdowns. There's, okay, so there's one of the mix. I mean, that's not even, I mean, as so goes the NFL team, as so goes, the
Starting point is 00:35:34 quarterback. That's not necessarily breaking news. But has, because once Josh Allen was falling apart, the Buffalo bills were done. Was there a game, though? And maybe there was. Where he was horrible and they won. He was very pedestrian and Hyden & Johnson. Every
Starting point is 00:35:52 time they touched the ball, they were gaining 10 yards. I'm sure there was one of the mess. I mean, I think was he pedestrian. He was pretty pedestrian in the Buccaneers game, and they won that one. That's because they got five turnovers. I think Jameson did as much to help the Texans as anything else. Thank you, James. But that's...
Starting point is 00:36:08 Yeah, he was 19 to 32 with 184 yards, no touchdowns and a pick. Look at his... Go over his week to week, stuff. I knew you can see a game longer. Is there any game in there that they won that it was, man, Deshaun almost cost us that game? I will say he was poor in the Tampa Bay game. Okay, so that's one out of ten. Is there any other game that he was subpar and did the team around him rallied?
Starting point is 00:36:34 Wasn't great in the Tennessee Titans win, the 24 to 21. He was 19 to 27, 243 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions. Okay. outside of that game that they won and he was poor? Pretty much no. And to your point, that's probably a lot of teams would say that. I mean, it's hard for the Saints to win a game of Drew Breeze is terrible. And another one week two.
Starting point is 00:37:01 I mean, he... Well, that game was awful. That game was awful all around. Texans shouldn't even have won that game. But that was also a late fourth quarter drive, which involved the two-point conversion. Yes, that the, well, the Jacksonville Jaguars missed the two-point conversion. Right. on the defensive side.
Starting point is 00:37:14 Otherwise, they would have won. Yeah, he had 159 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions. Okay. So I think my point is that when Deshaun goes and has these kind of special games, the Texans are on the right side of it. There hasn't been a day where Deshawn just didn't have it, and thank God Carlos Hyde ran for 129 yards and two scores. Well, that's because their defense isn't very good.
Starting point is 00:37:37 If they had a top five defense, then yeah, he could have bad games, and you could get away with it. You can't get away with it. The defense is mediocre at best. So you're going to need Deshaun Watson in the offense to be effective, or you're going to need them turning over James Winston five times in order for them to win. Can Wolf Fuller help the cause this week? Yes.
Starting point is 00:37:56 Are you sure he's going to play? He's going to play, presumably, yes. We're going to continue to work with him throughout the week and see where he's at. I know he's progressing in the right direction, but I know he's doing better, but I'm not sure that I'd be able to sit up here and tell you that, yeah, he's all the way back. Yeah, that sounds like he's not going to play. And if he is, he's 50%.
Starting point is 00:38:15 See, in my, when it comes to wide receivers for me, 50% of a player of a wide receiver whose number one thing is speed, he just becomes just a guy out there. You're hoping that he's some kind of decoy, and you're hoping that there isn't, I mean, twice this year he's come back from injury and played fewer than 20 snaps.
Starting point is 00:38:33 You're hoping he just doesn't re-injured him, get re-injured in the first quarter, and then it's when we're back to know Will Fuller again. Because here's the thing, you can be selective on when, you want to use him. But no matter what the down is, the distance, and what you are in part of the field,
Starting point is 00:38:48 Will Fuller's responsibility is to, when the ball is hiked, is to run down the football field as fast as humanly possible to stretch the defense. So it could be first and ten he does it at his own 19 or first at their 23-yard line. If he doesn't have the speed and doesn't have the ability to stretch the field,
Starting point is 00:39:05 then really you don't really count on Will Fuller being a position receiver. You got Kenny Stills that can do that. You got the tight ends that can do that. Well, that just hasn't been what Will Fuller, generally speaking, has been for this football team. So, you know. That's a wrinkle. It's an interesting wrinkle. How much is he going to matter?
Starting point is 00:39:24 And can a Will Fuller decoy at less than 100% still do something that can stretch out of Kansas City defense? I don't know. It's like, it's like if Jonathan Joseph was to come back this week. I mean, is Jonathan Joseph, how much has he helped the cause? Where would you put Jonathan Joseph? Veteran leadership? Where would you put him? Cornerback?
Starting point is 00:39:48 Against? Not Tyreek Hill? I didn't think so. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. We'll have to see. I think, I think Mr. Roby's going to have that responsibility again, don't you think? Probably.
Starting point is 00:40:01 All right. Let's get the second out. You can drop a couple more picks. Boy, away, that is something that we have. You know, it's always funny. We make fun of cornerbacks because they're receivers that can't catch the ball. Mm-hmm. If he catches either one of those, it's such a difference.
Starting point is 00:40:17 First one would have been to pick six. The last second one would have ended the game. Yeah. In regulation. In regulation. There would have no overtime. Mm-hmm. We just can't, we can't trust.
Starting point is 00:40:29 It's not roby. It's every cornerback. It's every cornerback. That's why they play defense. There's a reason why they're not wearing 80s. Right. They're wearing in the 20s. 713, 212.
Starting point is 00:40:40 5.790. It's how you reach. show 713-212-5-790. We've got some head coaching news in the NFL. We have some baseball news. We just mentioned a few minutes ago. And we are now five days away from Kansas City versus Houston as a Texan started to something they have never done before. If they do it, Ross, we leave Bill O'Brien alone for a year. We do. If they get to the championship, we have to leave them alone. Are we prepared to do that? Are you Houston? prepared to do that. 713-212-5-790.
Starting point is 00:41:16 The second hour, the Matt Thomas show starts next. Is the Matt Thomas Show. 101 on Sports Talk 790 alongside Ross Villarreal and Nick Lowe. I'm Matt Thomas. Thank you for listening to Sports Talk 790, where this Sunday we will be at Luckies in the Midtown, 2 o'clock, for Houston v. Kansas. We can call them the Texans. Yeah, as long as well.
Starting point is 00:41:53 We have to call it a Houston football watch party to watch the Texans. Yeah. We are Houston Texans going to watch football. How about that? How about this? How about the fact that when we watch the Texans play at Luckies, we say, go, Houston, go. Go, Houston, go. We're not going to say that.
Starting point is 00:42:11 We're not? Basically, I'm going to be drinking Mick Ultra and trying to sneak away a hamburger of some sort. Okay. You're going to get a lettuce wrap, though, right? And wrapped in lettuce with a slice of pizza and some fries. I'll probably have a Philly cheese steak, a couple slices of pizza. God, you are the worst. Headlines of the day.
Starting point is 00:42:30 Matt Rule, Baylor football fans, you need a new football coach. He's going to Carolina for a seven-year deal worth $60 million. I don't know what he was making at Temple, but this is like five years ago. Oh, Temple, I don't know. Temple, he's probably making $7.75, 800, $8.50, somewhere in that range. coaching when you're good and you're the hot coach candidate, you can go from making good money to amazing money. My U of H math tells me that's about $8.5 million a year.
Starting point is 00:42:58 Is that right? Is the coach of the Carolina Panthers? All that is guaranteed. What was he making it better? Do you have any idea? I'm going to guess round four. I don't know. I think 4.1.
Starting point is 00:43:08 God, could you imagine taking a job, whatever it is in your life, and doubling your pay? Wow, that'd be nice. When I left Houston in 2004, I was making X. Okay? 4.25 million. So he's going from 2.5 days. So he's doubling.
Starting point is 00:43:30 And it's all guaranteed at seven years. He's got $60 million coming his way in the next seven years. Wow. So I made X when I left Houston in 2004. I went to Salt Lake City and I made X plus 40%. Okay. I thought I was the luckiest man on earth. Okay.
Starting point is 00:43:48 I'm just saying that's I'm probably making like 0.75x. That's the closest I ever got to a huge leap. A huge leap like that. He's going from 4. Which again is very comfortable. He can have those people,
Starting point is 00:44:01 you know, those people that fix houses in Waco fix any house he wanted to in Waco. He can build an entire store. Do they do love it or listed or do they do what is, which one is that? I don't know who they are. It's a husband-wife team.
Starting point is 00:44:12 Fixer Upper is that one? Nick, you're a metrosectioner. Who are those people on the fixed houses in I have no idea what you're talking about. Okay, that's good. If you said their names, I would know. Fixer up or what Chip and Joanna. Chip and Joanna.
Starting point is 00:44:25 Gaines. Are they divorced? They're still good. They're all right? I think they're friends with benefits. What? They got an open relationship? Are they swingers?
Starting point is 00:44:33 My point is this. Was it you? They was talking about how you put a pineapple in front of the door or something like that? That's in one neighborhood in Houston, which I will not announce. It's not Kingwood. You seem to know a lot about it. No, I don't. I've just been told.
Starting point is 00:44:46 Okay. You just read it on next door? What is the next door? It's like the neighborhood forum. Like if somebody has a couch or if somebody's complaining about the neighbors or something, you're going next door. I was told there is a neighborhood in Houston, like a master playing community, that if there's a pineapple on your front door, that means you're open to visitors.
Starting point is 00:45:09 Hmm. Was it in Greens Point? Nope. Well south. It's not in the Lincoln Green East? No, it's not Aldine West. Although, you know, Aldi, there's been some swingers in Aldi. There's no question about that.
Starting point is 00:45:24 They have a different kind. Swinging the guns are a hot. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90. 7-1-3-1-2-5-7-90. All right, I brought up a question. We talked about this two weeks ago. We have to leave B-O-B alone if the Texans get to the AFC championship game. I agree.
Starting point is 00:45:44 You don't have a choice. Are you going to be quaking? in your boots, though, because you said they're never going to the Super Bowl with Bill O'Brien? Yes. So yes, you'll be quaking in your boots. Yes. How hard will you be quaking if the Titans upset the Ravens and the Texans upset the Chiefs?
Starting point is 00:46:03 Yes. And they're hosting. And just to be fair, I said I would want an entire day of me eating crow on the show. Okay. We'll bring you some crow. I didn't make any sort of ridiculous, like I'm going to walk to Denver or something, you know, Or backwards or take your pants off. Something stupid to embarrass myself.
Starting point is 00:46:21 Wasn't it the guy in Philly who said he was going to eat? Yeah. Yeah. Don't say it. I feel like I embarrass myself 12 to 3 every day. So why would I go outside of that framework? Right. But I said it and I stand by it.
Starting point is 00:46:35 Okay. The talent is there. I don't know if the coaching is there. Let me correct that. The talent on offense is there. Okay. Well, the secondary needs an overhaul. Offensive lines questionable.
Starting point is 00:46:52 You know what? It's been better. Now, granted, he got, the shot got sacks six times. This is the deal, though. If you want to complain about the talent, who's making up this roster? It's Bill. It's the law firm of O'Brien and Easterby. So you can't complain.
Starting point is 00:47:07 That's a great name, by the way. O'Brien and Easterby? Yeah. Or would you call it Easterby and O'Brien? Would be easier for the reception to answer the phone with? O'Brien and Easterby sounds like a accounting firm Now we're going law
Starting point is 00:47:21 Okay Let's try this Nick You be a receptionist Why do I have to be the receptionist? Because you're, I don't know Just stay with me on this Sounds like a like a tandem of like Irish detectives So let's try both directions
Starting point is 00:47:33 What sounds better? Click click click click click click click click click click click click pick it up What do you want me to make a sound effective No just be the receptionist No just you're the receptionist You're the receptionist O'Brien and Easterby How can I help you?
Starting point is 00:47:47 Okay Let's try version 2 Easterby and O'Brien How can I help you? Ooh, that float a little bit better Good afternoon Good afternoon Thank you for calling Easterbion O'Brien
Starting point is 00:48:00 Yeah I think I like the version 2 better No I'm going with Irish detectives And by the way You want to call to meet with them There's no chance you're seeing them Why not?
Starting point is 00:48:13 Because they're only They're only talking to people Within their own law firm they're talking to the junior associates. They're talking to the people. They're talking to the clerks. You're saying I can't afford them. You're saying that it's going to take a pretty incredible amount of business you're going to send them in order for Easterby or O'Brien to meet you in their offices.
Starting point is 00:48:33 Rightfully so. You're going to wind up getting one of their underlings. No kidding. Okay. Their partners is what you're saying. Correct. Okay. So to the grandiose point, they win this game.
Starting point is 00:48:46 which they are almost double-digit dogs in this. Are divisional playoff games usually this kind of wide discrepancy? Not usually. There's two of them in the AFC. We got to back off. And we being me. I'll do it because I've never been a fan of his. I mean, the criticisms are easy.
Starting point is 00:49:10 But you know what you have to do sometimes, gang? You can't be that talk show host. And this isn't what the national people don't ever understand. it's okay to be wrong once in a while. It's okay to say, you know what, this person, this athlete, this coach, exceeded what your expectations were. And you know what? You got to give him props. You have to give Bill O'Brien props for not melting down in the second half of that game,
Starting point is 00:49:39 really frankly the last 18 minutes of the game, 19 minutes of the game. Now, granted, J.J. Watt came through. granted Deshaun Watson got his mojo back, found DeAndre Hopkins, got the two-point conversion, and granted the Josh Allen, I don't know what that he was doing. He wet the bed in the fourth quarter of the game. But the fact of the matter is, he coached a wildcard victory. Now, the fourth quarter and the overtime were a hot mess for a variety of different reasons. But somebody had to win that game. And guess what?
Starting point is 00:50:13 He gets to put that on his resume. Thanks, guys. His first playoff win against the actual starting quarterback of the team. Some days. But it was Josh Allen. This is a stunner to you. Some days, Ross, we have terrible shows that will win the ratings war. And some days we'll have incredible shows and we'll lose them.
Starting point is 00:50:33 That's true. It's not fair. Because I think pound for pound, we do a pretty damn good show here every single day. We are ridiculously consistent. We don't give it. We don't mail in the noon hour and then kick it going. in the one and two. We are with you all the way through. Straight bangers Monday through Friday.
Starting point is 00:50:51 We don't play hard in the months of June and July and rest in the month of December and January. Well, if we got vacation time. That's true. I do take a lot of vacation time because I do have. You get a lot of vacation time. You've been around 10 years. So what we have to do is we have to give him props. And so if they win, the criticisms of he can't win a big.
Starting point is 00:51:15 Because this is a huge playoff game. I have no breaking news. This is huge. To beat the Kansas City Chiefs, who a lot of people thought were going to win the AFC this year, to beat them twice is one incredible note. To do it twice at Arrowhead Stadium, to do it a second time in January in a divisional playoff game
Starting point is 00:51:35 when you had to play 56 minutes, 6, 7 minutes of football while Kansas City was in the hot tub, resting, getting their bodies recuperated from a long, a tough season, give them props. If they do it. If they do it. Now, if they don't do it. It's a big if.
Starting point is 00:51:55 Now, if they don't do it, like, could you and I, like we always talk about game one of the season, Texans lost that game to New Orleans and the last kick by Will Lutz. You and I did not come in the next day going, oh my God,
Starting point is 00:52:08 what a blank storm that was. That's true. We were praising them. We spent more time praising the loss of New Orleans that we did the victory against Jacksonville. Absolutely. Absolutely. We can clearly...
Starting point is 00:52:17 That was at Lucky's. So does the season begin and end at the same spot? Well, a kick by Kansas City. Is it Coke? Now, Kockwood's the punter, right? They have... What's his name? Harrison Butker.
Starting point is 00:52:29 That's a good legal name. Who's your attorney? Harrison Buckner. Butker. What do you spell it? B-U-T-K-E-R. Is he good? Yeah, he was the number one.
Starting point is 00:52:41 I know he was the number one fantasy kicker. Even though your boy from Baltimore? Justin Tucker, I believe so, yeah. All right. So are you ready to do it? I am prepared to say we will back off on the criticism. But it's a huge if. It's a huge challenge.
Starting point is 00:52:59 And Canada City is really good. And you can't afford to fall behind 16 nothing. You just can't. Because I don't think, I think if Kansas City gets up 10, it's a moot point after that. You have to stay with them. And you have to show some signs. even though there's been no history of it.
Starting point is 00:53:16 You have to show some signs of staying close to them, especially in the first half. This game could get ugly. Houston's official sports cliche translator. I'm working hard. I'm trying to be a good teammate. I'm trying to go out here every day and do my job. Matt Thomas.
Starting point is 00:53:33 Taking it one day at a time. It is 120. The Matt Thomas show. Sports Talk 790. We'll check you with Aaron Reese on the Texans beat from the athletic coming up at the bottom of the hour. Can I, I need one small segment of non-sports, if you don't mind. We talk sports, sports, sports on this show all the damn time. There is a television show that is, look, when they say seasons, they, usually there's six episodes and it's a season.
Starting point is 00:54:08 They come back six weeks later and it's another episode, another season. They just keep adding seasons. Like Survivor's been around for 35 years. Well, they've done like a thousand seasons because they do one every few months. Right. Yeah. Well, there's another. Or like dancing with the stars is in like, season.
Starting point is 00:54:20 Season 70. Yeah. Like it was done, season 70 starting back in 2006. I mean, point being is that they embellished their seasons. There's another show that embellishes their seasons that remains a very, very popular show,
Starting point is 00:54:34 and I don't understand why. Survivor? I haven't watched it in years. Big, what's the mother? The America's got talent. They typically love everybody. So in American Idol,
Starting point is 00:54:49 it's all played out. our house has probably three or four televisions in it, maybe four. Two of them were on The Bachelor yesterday. My wife and my 19-year-old son. Your son's into the Bachelor? Well, I think his friends that are girls are into the Bachelor. He's got girlfriends? So he's doing this, I think, in order to create conversation among his girl space friends.
Starting point is 00:55:15 Okay. I'm on board with that. I have a little talk with this young man. First of all, whoever's texting, you're telling us to stop texting during the show. It doesn't vibrate. What is up with that show? Why?
Starting point is 00:55:30 I don't get it. I've never watched it. I've never gotten into it. There's not really even been, except for the real world back in the 90s and road rules. I haven't really watched a reality show since then. I've watched probably... Those were like the first, right?
Starting point is 00:55:44 Wasn't the first popular... Real world? Real world? Right, right. I've probably watched two or three of three of the... the 30 years of the Bachelor. Okay, wait. So you've watched a couple of seasons?
Starting point is 00:55:57 Very early on. Okay. And every single one of them was, hot guy gets to hang out with 18 or 20 hot girls. Yes. He has to eliminate them. When he gets down to a final four, it becomes more difficult. When he gets to eliminate down to last two, he gets to sleep with both of them. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:56:15 Provided there's proper protection. And then... As in a security guard? And then they get together and they realize they hate each other. and they typically break up. And then the hot girl that's not picked becomes the Bachelorette for the next season. They just rotate people. It's a never-in-cycle, right?
Starting point is 00:56:32 And then she picks a bunch of 18 guys, and whoever doesn't win in The Bachelorette becomes the next bachelors. Now, it's not always that, but in my mind it is. Yeah, don't they just always, it's like the circle of life. So how does that show change when you have hot guy meets hot set of girls and vice versa? They all profess their love for each other. They all, like we were building the strong connection. How does the show change? Unless it's just the characters and how bat-blank crazy those women are.
Starting point is 00:57:03 That's why it's still on, Matt. Because it doesn't change. It's the exact same formula every single time. Could you imagine this radio show was the exact same show every single day? We'd be national. It's the same formula, though. I mean, it's you and it's me. We just are in our personalities.
Starting point is 00:57:22 That's what, I mean, the formula for The Bachelor, right? Don't you get like some meathead guys and then you get some guys who are actually good guys and you have them thrown all together and hopefully they get in fights and drama happens, right? Yeah, imagine if they did a season where they got like this ugly dofuss and a bunch of normal chicks. Like if you really wanted to spice a show up, which you would do, you would put some ugly people in there. Yes. And you would put some people with a criminal record. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:57:47 That, you know, like, Bachelorette thinks his bad boy is so hot. You know, he's wearing biker clothes and all that, and he's missing two or three teeth. And then all of a sudden, he gets arrested. Or it turns out he's got four kids. Like that show, you like baggage. Oh, that show baggage is good. I don't stop watching that even though it's been on production for a while. That's my 90 seconds of today's.
Starting point is 00:58:11 What are the kids watching on television? And the fact is, my wife's watching it because all her friends are tweeting about it. Cameron's watching it because all of his girl space friends are watching it. And my Twitter line yesterday was flooded with people talking about this damn bachelor. When again, I know the situation. Hot girl, hot guy eventually wound up hooking up for about three months until she finds out that he was hooking up with other girls on the show when he said he wasn't having sex with anybody else. Hmm. I don't see if the big deal is.
Starting point is 00:58:43 The big bonus is they're hot. And it just shows you how shallow we are as a society. Well, I don't watch it. So, although I guess I am somewhat shallow. No, I'm not. No, you are. You're one of the most shallow people on now. That is not true.
Starting point is 00:58:56 You reek of shallowness. Let's go to Matt in the Woodlands on the Matt Thomas show. Matt, good afternoon. Good afternoon. I enjoy your show. Thank you. I'm glad it's different every day. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:59:07 That way, when I'm driving around town, I can be entertained. But I've called in a handful of times a year. I'm a cardal fan, but I'm coming to the defense of Houston Astros. And I watched a show, streamed in from New York City, today is yesterday. And they're a sports program. And they're really bitter, the Yankee folks, and I don't like the Yankees at all. But the reality is this is that whatever happens to use an Astros in this, and yeah, it looks like they're guilty, and it looks like they've done, they did use, you know,
Starting point is 00:59:43 they're cheated a little bit, but they better go shotgun and MLB baseball. They better go after everybody. because I don't want to see one team, unless it was the Yankees. I want to see one team get hammered on this. I'm worried about losing draft choices or denouncing some record or whatever. It's just it's not right. I mean, it wasn't against the rules. It wasn't necessarily an ethical thing to do at the time.
Starting point is 01:00:11 But, I mean, I'm not really saying when I'm thinking correctly. In the sense it looks like the Astros are to get kicked in the shins and higher on this whole. thing, and they'll be the only one. That better not be the case, because there's a lot of teams that were doing stuff, and for whatever reason, and this is a question I had for you. If you remember, at the beginning of this whole thing, MLB said they had evidence of other teams doing things, and they were to investigate a whole league, all of a sudden that stopped. It's not the theme. It's focused on the Astros, and MLB just said that about three weeks ago. that doesn't seem right.
Starting point is 01:00:48 And I think that they don't want to have MLB doesn't want to have across the board major problem. They're willing to kick one team to show an example to the rest of the league. Well, that's unfortunate how society works, Matt. Well, that's true, but I mean, it's bad. And, you know, the astronauts of a great organization. Ownership's fantastic. He's the St. Louis guy, by the way,
Starting point is 01:01:10 and now you know him. His old history, though, it's just not right. And I know that sounds stupid, you know, but I hope to God that something doesn't come down before the season starts that the Astros are punished horribly because it's just, it doesn't add up. Well, thank you, Matt, for the phone call. I am of the opposite. I am a deathly afraid of the worst, Ross. And if they just get a slap on the hand, I'll consider it a blessing. It's not going to have.
Starting point is 01:01:38 They're not just going to get a slap on the wrist. And by the way, again, there are people that are made to make, I mean, when you have problems at work and you commit penalties and you do things, you get slap to the arrest, or you get major fines or you get made an example of because you want no one else to do this again. As a deterrent, yes, made an example of that I think is the perfect phrase. The Astros, because they were the first one, allegedly to get caught, allegedly, will be allegedly the ones to be made examples of. It's just a truth.
Starting point is 01:02:11 I agree. And it sucks. And again, it's, I'm taking my World Series championship away. No, they're not taking my memories. They're going to find them. They're going to suspend. They're going to lose international picks.
Starting point is 01:02:21 They're going to lose draft picks. And they're going to probably face some suspensions in their front office and perhaps on the field. The players, it sound like, will be spared. We go on the Texans beat next. After I tell you about the guys night out happening at the Rockets, when they take on the Portland Trailblazers on January the 15th at TOTA Center. And it is presented by Budweiser. Checking out your Houston Rockets is a take on the Portland Trailblazers. That's coming up on Wednesday, January the 15th. Tickets start as low as $29. Grab those tickets right now. Rockets.com.
Starting point is 01:03:10 Rockets.com for Guys 9 out. Wednesday, January 15th at TOTA Center. Be there! The Astros World Series. Champions are the Rockins are going to do it again. Real winners play and real Texans Talk on Sports Talk 790. 133 on Lamat Thomas show. Here's the thing Ross, before we get back to the Texans,
Starting point is 01:03:39 this is an indictment. This isn't majorly baseball going after the Astros. This is majorly baseball going after a team. there is no witch hunt in the ivory towers of major league baseball. So it's not a presidential witch hunt? They're going out for the Boston Red Sox, gang. The Boston Red Sox are one of the most popular teams in Major League Baseball. They're on ESPN more than every Sunday.
Starting point is 01:04:05 More than leave it to bea. More than leave it to beva. I always feel like you've just got to throw that in there somehow, some way. They're not trying to pick on the asteros. They're picking on the first team. If this was the Indians that go after him, if this was the Royals, This is the Mariners. They'd be like, well, y'all suck.
Starting point is 01:04:21 Why y'all doing cheating? And then still not winning games. Just pray for no cheating. What do you mean? It happened. Eight pounds, six ounces of a baby baseball, Jesus. It happened. Aaron Reese, tell your people of the athletic to stop chasing after baseball teams
Starting point is 01:04:38 and all this illegal activity supposedly. Hi, Aaron. How are you? How are you? Yeah, I'm good. Okay. So when did you start writing? your, I can't believe the Texans lost this game,
Starting point is 01:04:53 and how fast did you have to edit those initial words when you were writing them on Saturday afternoon? Well, I mean, you know the beauty of working for the athletic because I had no deadline, so I got to watch the whole game before I really started to write a bunch. Started to think about, think it through, though, for sure, and started to plan to cancel a flight to Baltimore. But I hopefully had to cancel anyway, but I thought it was going to cancel,
Starting point is 01:05:17 because I thought the season was going to be over, and I thought that, you know, Texans were going to have to answer some really interesting questions, kind of about you go all in on this year to basically get stuck in the mud. They're stuck in the same spot, and obviously, you know, they advanced around, and that's a step for them.
Starting point is 01:05:35 It's not, but ultimately, I think you don't necessarily touch everything they did as a success simply because they beat Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in a really entertaining but ugly game. I'm under belief that Josh Allen was concussed in the fourth quarter because some of the decisions he made were mind boggling. Look, it all begins and ends with the pass rush. The Texans have not had in quite some time. And a lot of that is because of JJ. But Whitney was very good in the game yesterday.
Starting point is 01:06:06 You got a variety of different folks that really stepped up. But, man, I mean, it did. The Texans, a lot of favors by Josh completely melting down the fourth quarter. Oh, yeah, I mean, absolutely. I don't know what was worth the lateral on the stramble or the 40-yard downfield to the fullback and double coverage. They were both pretty brutal. I mean, I just don't know if you'd say he chuffed or worked, but I think also part of it is just the past rush. The Texas came alive a little bit in the second half.
Starting point is 01:06:38 Part of that, obviously, him being a little reckless, but I wonder if, you know, just them getting a little bit more of a rhythm in the past rush come tend to feel a little bit more off-balanced, out of rhythm, and then that kind of just affected his decision-making as the game said to seem to put away from him. And the fact is, Jay-J. Watt, in my opinion, Aaron, did exactly what he was going to do. He wasn't going to be out there every play, but you definitely, for the most part,
Starting point is 01:07:00 could tell he was on the football field, and he was getting stronger as the game was moving along. For sure, and I think, you know, if you're a type of fan, the most encouraging thing about that game, when it comes to the defense side of that Watt was able to play basically the whole fourth quarter. and feel pretty good. Not just that he was in shape enough to do it after you have all the time off and stuff,
Starting point is 01:07:20 but just that, you know, it was able to hold up to the grind of kind of play after play after play that shoulder and stuff. So I imagine he's probably only going to play more against the Chiefs. And, you know, they're going to need them because they're going to play a look better quarterback. No question on the quarterback. So let me do this. We were talking about earlier about have we made too much of the sluggish starts for this football team? So I'll ask you.
Starting point is 01:07:43 have we made too much of this? Or is this the week that if you don't get off to a better start and don't put some points up early and don't reach the end zone in the first quarter, this thing could get ugly pretty quick? You know, I want to say that this is the week that it would come back to bite them. But what did they fall behind against the chiefs? The first time they played 20 to 3? Or 17 to 3, 1 of those 2? 17 0, that was why I think even.
Starting point is 01:08:09 Yeah, no, I mean, all that being said, though, I don't imagine that they can, can get to lucky twice against the Chief. The first time they played, obviously. Mahomes would tweak that ankle. They were missing the right tackle for the Chiefs. And obviously, on the defensive side, they're missing Chris Jones, and they hadn't added Terrell Suggs yet. I mean, this is a different Chief team, I think, a better Chief team.
Starting point is 01:08:28 I don't know if you can really afford to fall behind in that sort of hole. And the other thing is, you know, Carlos Hyde ran for all those yards against the Chiefs, and they ran really well against Kent City in general. But you fall behind early against them in Arrowhead Stadium in a playoff game. I don't know how much you can really rely on running. And then, you know, running the clock. So they can't get behind you by too much because then they can't really exploit the one element of the chief defense that hasn't really improved that much, which is the run defense. So you really think, and I'm going to go off with your last statement, if Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson can move down the football,
Starting point is 01:09:00 that's going to be DeShon's best friend because I feel like he's had to just escape some incredible pass rushes and do some in Superman-esque type things that he's got to be really good. That goes without saying, but a ground game cannot put the way of the world on his shoulders this week. No, absolutely. I mean, I wrote this after they beat Buffalo, and I think it's ultimately kind of what's going to happen in this game, too, and how long how far the team is going to go. The team is ultimately just kind of flawed in certain ways that, you know, any quarterback obviously is going to important in the postseason. But I think what you saw in that game against Buffalo is that if they didn't have him as their quarterback,
Starting point is 01:09:37 they probably lose that game. I mean, they put him in a bunch of really compromising position. that only he was able to get out of because of kind of who he is. And so given that, you know, if they can do anything to kind of take the weight off his shoulders, that's huge because as good as he is, he hasn't been really good for multiple games in a row off season, maybe two games in a row, but not three. He hasn't had a, you know, three-sture games with 100-plus quarterback rating all year. And obviously, quarterback rating is not a perfect stat, but I think it is indicative of kind
Starting point is 01:10:03 of him being a little bit up and down this season. And, you know, the Texans have also not won three games in the row off season. And I imagine that to some degree, those two things are hand in hand. What's your gut feel on Will Fuller and Jonathan Joseph this week? My gut feel on Will Fuller is that he will play. That seems to be a little more optimism for the second of this week than the last week. But I don't want to go say for sure. I mean, obviously, I think, you know, with Fuller, we've learned by this point that you've got to be pretty cautious with him.
Starting point is 01:10:33 And O'Brien is going to say all week that a game-time decision, I'm sure, because, you know, what's the competitive advantage? say anything else. As for Jonathan Joseph, less clear about him. I'm not sure, though, that it will ultimately mean that much. I think as much as a fancier, really like Jay Joe for a lot of the stuff he's accomplished at this point, he's kind of been phased out of the defense by the end of the season.
Starting point is 01:10:53 He had that pick against Tampa, but, you know, I think he only played, like, six defensive snaps. And, you know, it wasn't really a big part of the game in Week 17 with that meaningless game. So I think, you know, at the end of the day, if they're going to slow down the home, it's going to be up to Gary on Conley, running hard goes than rather Robes.
Starting point is 01:11:09 How do you feel that matchup is? I mean, we've got Hill, obviously. The Texans have always had a terrible problem trying to stop tight ends. Picture, if you can, the Texan secondary against all the skill position players for Kansas City. So I actually think when I can go to the quarters for Houston, I think that they've, the group is probably a better group than they had when they faced this team last time. You remember last time, Joseph Bobbitts who was still playing. I think Philip Gaines, who, you know, fans hardly knew.
Starting point is 01:11:40 He only played a few games before he went on IR with an ankle injury. But, you know, he was playing for them at that time. Lonnie Johnson was playing a key role. Now, of course, Lonnie's only playing on special teams. Roby still out there, but Geron Conley and Renhardt-Hartreys, and neither are part of this team at the last time. And Conley had, you know, a really good game in the playoffs. And he's just in general been a lot better for Houston than he ever was for the Raiders this season.
Starting point is 01:12:03 He has 10 pass breakups compared to, I think, just one during the whole time he was from Oakland this season. Hard Grants has been still not great, but I think, you know, an okay corner if he's their third guy. So you probably feel better about those corners. The question for me really is that safety. I mean, Jolie all the day was still kind of limping around in the locker when I saw him on Monday. So if he can't play, I mean, you're going to ask Mike Adams to play a lot. He's, you know, 38 years old. And then if he goes down suddenly, AJ Moore is playing a lot.
Starting point is 01:12:29 And he's never played more than, I think, 11 defensive snaps all season. and that came in week 17. So the safety issue, especially with depth, sounds like the biggest issue. Okay, we know what will happen if Kansas City beats Houston in terms of how they're going to do it. Mahomes have a big day. Texan will give a boatload of yards. Maybe they force a couple interceptions. Give me the scenario for the audience that has Houston winning the game of Kansas City.
Starting point is 01:12:53 Kind of lay the game out in your mind. Yeah, I think that the Texans need to get off to a hot start because if they can get off to a hot start, then they can run the ball a lot more. because they can run the ball without worrying so much about the clock. That's, I think, a way you can get taken advantage of Kansas City. And I think that Carliside can have another big game against this team. And then defensively, I think that, you know, you're not going to necessarily slow down all the chief skill position players, you know, play to play. But you kind of have to hope for just a few big players.
Starting point is 01:13:22 I think, you know, Watt was relatively – he played this game last time, but he was relatively quiet. I mean, I think he had one QB hit, and that's it. And just generally, I think Texans only had one sack in the home, despite playing against more of a banged-up line. So they kind of got to get some more pressure on the homes. They can maybe cause one mistake, get an extra possession, and then, you know, establish enough of a lead that they can rely on the run game to run. Deshawn Lopton from taking too many hits against what's a pretty good Chiefs, pass for now, a better one that he faked the week. All right, I'll hold you, let you decide on your website who's going to win the Kansas City Houston game. Do you have a feel on Tennessee, Baltimore?
Starting point is 01:13:58 I think Baltimore. I mean, they're the best team in the NFL, right? And I don't know, like, you know, the Patriots, you know, they let Derek Henry run all over them to keep that score low. But I just think that at the end of the day, Baltimore is just the best team, and they're going to win. I'll leave it that. Safe travels to Kansas City.
Starting point is 01:14:16 We'll talk again next week. Thanks for the time, Aaron, as always. Yes, thanks. Are you got it, Aaron Reese from the Athletic. You can follow him on Twitter at Aaron J. Reese. Aaron J. Reese for all Texans news from the. The Athletic. It's you and me the rest of the way.
Starting point is 01:14:30 It's 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-7-90. If you want to reach out through Twitter, you can as well. At SportsMT, at SportsRV, and at Sports Talk 790. And, of course, our producer at Pro Nick Lowe. Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson here. You're listening to the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790. 149 on this Tuesday.
Starting point is 01:15:09 Tomorrow I'll be in Atlanta. where we will have Hotlana, Matt. Hotlana. We'll have a member of the Kansas City media. Join us early on. We're going to play all Atlanta rap songs the entire day. We're going to play the Atlanta rhythm section? Probably not.
Starting point is 01:15:26 You don't think so? I guess. We could. I think Greg Cook is a big fan of theirs. That's good. Well, mix it up. Everything tomorrow, Nick, has Atlanta feel to it. It's a ludicrous all day.
Starting point is 01:15:37 A lot of ludicrous. Ray Charles, singing Georgia. Well, he wasn't from it. Atlanta. But it's still a great Atlanta song. Okay. He's from, wouldn't he from Florida or something like that? Atlanta Rhythm Section songs. Outcast. That's future.
Starting point is 01:15:52 That's O-U-T-K-A-S-T. Amigos. Yeah. So we'll have that for you. We'll also have Oliver Luck's going to be on the show. The Commissioner of the... Germain Dupree. The Commissioner of the XFL will be on the radio program tomorrow.
Starting point is 01:16:04 They've got a bunch of funky rules. I don't think they're bad. They're just different. And we'll go through some of the rules. on tomorrow's show between noon and three. Don't make a face of me. Ross is getting so many texts. Oh my gosh.
Starting point is 01:16:20 Either he's on a really busy thread. It's a group time. I need to put it on Do Not Disturb. Like I do the one of you guys are on at work when I'm trying to sleep and I wake up with 25 texts. Yeah, because you also sleep till 1059. Well, that's because I'm up till four. Doing what? You know, watching TV.
Starting point is 01:16:38 Preping the show like a mother? Preping the show really, really. I like it. 713-212-5-790. 7-1-3-21-2-5-7-90. If you've ever been afraid to call the show, well, you shouldn't be afraid. That's what people will get nervous. I understand that.
Starting point is 01:16:54 We only tease because we care. Sometimes there's really, really ludicrous, not ludicrous, but ludicrous types of phone calls. Sometimes you tease because you're mean. What do I mean? Constantly. Okay. I promise the rest of this week, if anybody calls the show, I'll be so. super nice, no matter how ridiculous the argument is.
Starting point is 01:17:14 At 713-21-2-125-7-90. I'm not agreeing to that. I'm just happy they get through you. You cut off a lot of those people to try to call the show. That's fine. So what I would like to know is a barometer of the team. I'm telling you, I was beyond excited about the Texans went on Saturday. Reality is starting to come into play a little bit for me today.
Starting point is 01:17:40 and you and I will really hold our predictions until early Friday on the show. I think I think I know where you're going. I know where I'm going. I think you know where I'm going. I know where negative Nancy's going over there. I don't know where I'm going. Yeah, you do. You had them losing to Buffalo.
Starting point is 01:17:57 I can't imagine you thinking they're going to go to Kansas City and win. I had them losing to Buffalo as well. So I probably figure that out. I'm probably going to pick him to cover, though. I think it's going to be a closer game than people's 10 points. Yeah, 9.5. That's a nice little big cushion. But here's a thing, but while the cover part is awesome, we don't live in Las Vegas.
Starting point is 01:18:16 Well, if we don't have a bookie, nobody's going to, in the middle of March, as the weather starts a warm and say, man, I'm so glad the Texans covered. Yeah, they would. Unless you have a huge financial investment. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Like if your water heater goes down or something and you need a little extra cash, it'd be nice. You won the bet. So you're saying that's how I fix it then. I have two water heaters in my house that both have completely.
Starting point is 01:18:40 been destroyed. I'm just making a random reference. Well, I'm telling you right now, it's my house. So, but what is the general feeling? What do you, because look, we don't have anybody calling it right now.
Starting point is 01:18:54 I feel good. I feel like we're in, we are in, the Texans are playing with house and money. Exactly. Put it that way. But no, I don't,
Starting point is 01:19:02 see, I disagree with you on that. I didn't know. The reason why is because we had been spending how much of this year talking about, we, the Texans have got to go farther than just playing in the wild car game.
Starting point is 01:19:12 It isn't house money. This is where they're supposed to be. I never believe they would actually do that. The wild card is the hump of a decent team. We said, can you win a wild card game against the team? I don't know. Do you think coming into this season, we expect them to go on the divisional round? I think once you get to the playoffs, you have expectations that are way different than the ones they were in September.
Starting point is 01:19:31 Okay. I don't think the expectations are high for the Texas. I had them going seven and nine and not making the playoffs. Okay. My expectations, two weeks ago were like, you know what, if you're going to win this division and go to the playoffs, then stop losing in the wild card on Saturdays and go do something you narrowed them before and let's go to play for the championship.
Starting point is 01:19:48 So I don't think the hump is reached until you win this week. No, if they lose though, the season's not a failure, is what I mean. Is it to you? I think no, the season is...
Starting point is 01:19:57 Or a disappointment. It's what we thought it was going to be. Is that fair? I had, no, you had them at 7-9. I had them at 9 and 7 and out in the first round. But I think you, again, I'm just speaking out how I believe in things. If you're wrong about a regular season prediction,
Starting point is 01:20:12 then you're in the moment of January. Right. And then you're thinking about, well, can they beat this team? Can they can't? Because really, I would think most people don't believe the Texans are going to beat the Kansas City Chiefs. Nor should they. Unless you're, you know, you're a traveling Texan or Texan Karen or something like that. Or no, can yes.
Starting point is 01:20:35 If that makes any sense. They can, but they're probably not going to. Right. But I mean, expectations can change. I get that. But I'm not going to say they've exceeded expectations. I'd say they're right about expectations. Because where we got?
Starting point is 01:20:49 At what point in this season were you like, man, Texas are going on an AFC championship game? Maybe after day one an Arrowhead? No. Even after they beat the Patriots. When they beat Kansas City in Kansas City, I thought they're going to win the AFC South because everybody else in the division was so schizophrenic
Starting point is 01:21:05 that it was going to be a lesser of four evils because Jacksonville couldn't win consecutive weeks. Tennessee was struggling at the time. Indianapolis, you thought was a really good team. Because remember, they went to Kansas City the week before and beat them too. So there were other teams going to Kansas City winning. The Texans just proved they were the best of the group of teams that we didn't know who they were going to be. AFC South champions two years in a row.
Starting point is 01:21:28 I think they're at the baseline. Let's say you set a goal for anything. Like we're raising $1,000. I think they're at $1,000. Anything else? So the Texans are a GoFundMe account? Yes. They've hit their goal.
Starting point is 01:21:38 Maybe not Bill O'Brien's goal. Maybe not Jack Easterby's goal or Deshaun Watson's goal. But for as far as expectations, I think they're at the baseline. So if they lose this week, 37 to 10. Well, that changes things. 2410. That's better. 17-14.
Starting point is 01:21:57 Okay, great. You'll feel better. Absolutely. I'll feel they were what we all thought way they were. Yeah. I think that's how I'll feel. What he just said, I think that's how I'll feel. If they lose the Kansas.
Starting point is 01:22:08 Because I just, I'm trying, you know, you throw a bunch of dice or get some combination that works. Like Yatzy? Yeah. To your roll a pair of dice that you like. Okay. I'm not finding any combination that I see Houston beating Kansas City. Unless somebody calls the next couple days and says, Matt, you don't realize Kansas City's run defense is not very good. And that's what we're going to spend time talking to the folks and Casey about that Wednesday and Thursday.
Starting point is 01:22:31 Could the sneaky key to victory be how successful Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson are? Carlos and Duke and maybe Taiwan Jones because he's now Carlos Duke and Taiwan I like that we start the final hour we recharge
Starting point is 01:22:46 get you ready for the 2 o'clock hour the Matt Thomas show and we'll start with Joseph in the Seaprook area if you want to follow up you may do so 713 212
Starting point is 01:22:55 5790 I believe if you're really going to go above what is expected you have to win this game because I think most people what did you just say a minute ago Nick I'll steal your line
Starting point is 01:23:07 They are what we think they were Yeah, which would have been a division winning team Winning a wild card against a low seed And then going on the road and not winning against team They're not supposed to be If they win this game, that's the greatest Texan season ever If they win this game, this is the greatest Texan season ever Absolutely, I'll steal your bit
Starting point is 01:23:26 Is the Matt Thomas show Two on the Matt Thomas show We are recharging this final hour meaning we're getting ready for 58 minutes of great sports radio. Yes. That's, of course, being here. Well, of course. Don't go to any once.
Starting point is 01:23:56 Beryl Fire Hot Takes. Brilliant analysis. In-depth conversation. And then there's our show. And believe it or not. Yeah. What is Believe it or not today? Um, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:24:10 I think questions about The Bachelor. Really? I mean, you watch two seasons of it. Like the history of the show? Yeah. I suppose I could probably do that. That sounds great because I don't think anybody will know any of that. I won't know any of it.
Starting point is 01:24:29 Do you think people will ever know anything about the game? The prize pigs are waiting for you. That's all they're waiting for. That's true. Bill, Dwayne, whatever he wants to call himself on a particular day. All right, here's the question. It's my chair, by the way. Okay.
Starting point is 01:24:41 I've got a squeaky chair. We've got to throw some of these chairs away here. Some of D-40. Yeah. This one's broken. The one I'm on Broken, and when you're on is squeaky. We're multi-billion-dollar company. We're doing fine.
Starting point is 01:24:51 It's fine. Here's the question. I can bring in some lube for you. That's, okay, too much. Two mentions of lube in one show. It's good. And Nick is happy. What?
Starting point is 01:25:01 It's a banner day for him. So what do we call it? We're looking for the level line? What did you call it? The baseline. The baseline. The line of expectation, the threshold. The line of expectation, I believe, was to win a wild card game.
Starting point is 01:25:15 Yes. For some, the line of expectation is you always want it. When you set a goal. whoever sets a goal in their place of business that's the exact same goal every year. Nobody. Well, I think we should raise the bar for next year. So I'm raising the bar this year.
Starting point is 01:25:32 You're talking to the bar this year was just beating Buffalo? That was winning a while. Last year they got their ass whooped in a wildcard game. But what was the bar last year? The bar last year was win a wildcard game as well. This year's team is better than last year's team. I would feel like, but I felt like last year's AFC was more wide open than this year. Even though
Starting point is 01:25:52 I felt like they were pretty vulnerable. I felt like the Patriots are vulnerable and the Chiefs were more, I guess they felt more vulnerable because I don't think they're... No, no, no, no. This year is a little easier because as much as you want to brag on how awesome Baltimore and Kansas City are, they don't have the pedigree the New England does. New England's out of the way. New England was out of the way in December.
Starting point is 01:26:10 I don't care. I mean, why don't the Ravens have pedigree? Because Lamar Jackson's about to make his first playoff star. John Harbaugh is their coach. He's a Super Bowl winning coach. They've been good for years. Are you guarantee me, Lamar? Here's what I can guarantee you.
Starting point is 01:26:22 I can pretty much guarantee you that Pat Mahomes are going to throw three touchdown passes and throw for 275 yards. I can't guarantee that for Lamar Jackson. I mean, he led the entire league and the entire NFL in passing touchdowns. First NFL playoff start, correct? No. He started last year. Okay. How did you do that last year's skin?
Starting point is 01:26:42 I don't think they did they, did they lost? I can't remember who two. The Chargers. They got killed. Did they get killed by the Chargers? Was it close? Start one and start two can be a different. So let me erase that then.
Starting point is 01:26:55 Yeah, that's what I'm saying. And you look at the coaches. I mean, we're talking about Andy Reed and John Harbaugh. Those are two of the better coaches in the entire NFL. If you want to look at results. I mean, just one Super Bowl among them, but there's pedigree there for sure. So you're telling me that this season is a success because the top two seeds are so good. You can say that last year by New England?
Starting point is 01:27:16 The previous year by New England. Previous year by New England. Then throw Baltimore in a mix for a while. Well, the Texas just aren't to that level. the pedigree, if there's a team lacking pedigree, it's the Texans and Sean Wals. So expectations are lowered because of the teams above them are so much better. I want to know when they're going to be in that pedigree, in that top two pedigree. We might be waiting a while with Bill O'Brien as a head coach and GM and you're losing,
Starting point is 01:27:41 and you don't have a lot of draft picks coming up the next couple years. Joseph and Seabrook at 206 on the Matt Thomas show, Joseph, thanks for being patient. Good afternoon. How are you doing? me. You got it. Man, I think we can go into Kansas City, and I think we can beat them, but two things have to happen. We need to get pressure on Patrick Mahomes, and we have to
Starting point is 01:28:05 score early. If we can't do that, I don't think we can win. Okay, let's go to your second point first. Score early. I mentioned this before, Joseph, the Texans won 11 games this year by not scoring early. So why is it a key? I think I know the answer why? But you tell me, why is scoring early so important this week when the Texans have won a boatload of games by not scoring early?
Starting point is 01:28:33 Because I think Patrick Mahomes is so dangerous. And if we don't score early, I think we can't rely heavily on that run game. And I think it's just over. If the Achilles heel of the Kansas City defense is their run defense, you're not going to be able to use it if you're down 21-0 is what you're trying to tell me. Right. I get it. There's just no way.
Starting point is 01:28:58 Yeah, and I will agree with him in the sense of you have to score early, especially if Kansas City's, you can't fall behind. To make an NBA analogy, you know, Matt, you get down 10 in the fourth quarter, and you can score and score and for whatever reason you can't stop the other team. That would be the scenario. I just don't see this average Texans defense continually stopping the chiefs in order to allow the Texans to catch up. But the final 17 minutes of the game,
Starting point is 01:29:25 final 18 minutes of the game, there wasn't an average Texan defense out there. Josh Allen was, come on, he was, he was awful. Patrick Mahomes isn't going to do that. But Josh Allen made those terrible, awful decisions. Why? Not because he had seven seconds of throw. Because he concussed. Well, because he might have been hit once or twice.
Starting point is 01:29:43 Right. Yeah, I mean, you're talking about Josh Allen versus, you know, Patrick Mahomes. Josh Allen is nothing compared to Patrick Mahom. We totally agree with you. Look, you're bringing very fair points, Joseph. There's no doubt about it. I'm just, it's just too, I don't know. I'd love for the Texans to get out to a 10-0 start.
Starting point is 01:30:05 I just, there's nothing that says in their DNA this year they're capable of doing that. They scored zero touchdowns this year when Deshawn Watson first quarters. That's crazy. Yeah, and when you look at that, I mean, you look at that statistic and, you know, you almost have no hope in Kansas City if you can't get that. Well, that's why I wanted to celebrate yesterday and today, because the reality is going to start kicking into me probably starting tomorrow, and I'm just trying to figure out.
Starting point is 01:30:30 That's why we're going to get to Kansas City people in the next couple of days. Joseph, thank you for the call. I do want to hear what's wrong with them. Okay, crazy plan. You start A.J. McCarran for the first drive. Oh, stop. You're on segment suspension again. Again?
Starting point is 01:30:46 It's two suspensions in one day. They'd never see it coming. Yeah, okay. I'm sure wouldn't. Bill O'Brien should be fired on the spot if that happens. Can you go to the box score of the first game? The Chiefs Texans game? Sure.
Starting point is 01:31:00 Because you have been a big person to push this. Well, they've done it once in Kansas City already during the regular season. So give me. They got down 17 to 3 in that game. I just forgot about that. And what Holmes is like 50%? Yeah, he was a little hurt. He still threw for 273 and three touchdowns with a pick.
Starting point is 01:31:20 Only got sacked once. so the offensive line protected and plus he's got great escapeability he's got the same escapeability frankly as is it mean no that's not true don't know the Sean's better but it's but it's not like Pat doesn't get away from that's good he makes plays down the field when he escapes as well yeah which is super dangerous let's go to bob and katy at 210 on the mat tomah's show bob how are you sir I'm doing well I'm doing well how are you this fine cold wintry day man isn't it beautiful living Houston amen to that what do you got um yeah Two things. Before I get to my point, one thing, that bar you're setting for this.
Starting point is 01:31:57 Bill O'Brien set that bar before the season started when he traded away all our draft picks and our future. The bar was set now to be in the AFC championship with those trades that he made and wheeling and dealing he did. It was a win now, not winning two or three years. It was now because we don't have two or three years unless we really hit the free agency hard. And that is where the bar is set. Now, my point about the slow start, there is no secret that Mr. B.O.B, he makes this very clear. He scripts the first 20 plays or so.
Starting point is 01:32:36 If you watch these games, the first 20 plays, count out the first 20 plays plus or minus a couple. And then his script runs out. And then DeShan just gets to go and do what he does. That's why we stink. in the first half. He does not know how to write a script. He's not an offensive play caller. And Deshaun kind of gave it away in one of his press conferences or interviews after the game when they were talking about the touchdown to our running back. He told him to go to the corner and I'm going to hit you and we're going to get that touchdown. And that's the
Starting point is 01:33:19 I think we lost you You know He wants to protect Watson in the first half He tries to keep him in that pocket To stand up and on I get kind of that But the offense stinks Once his script runs out
Starting point is 01:33:35 We're very good Let them do what they do Quit being scared that he might get hurt Because there is no tomorrow And with that I'd just like to hear your opinion And go cooge Thank you very much This is kind of like our playoff game
Starting point is 01:33:46 I don't believe you can be that Deshaun is ad-libbing the rest of the game. I don't believe it would be the case. There was the pitch to Carlos that he dropped. The next play wasn't, hey, I want you to go run a route from left to right in the flat, And I'm going to just, and if you're there, I'll throw it to you. Yeah, we'll play action. Everything was script. Everything is scripted.
Starting point is 01:34:21 So I will refuse to believe. Now, does, does, is he able to audibleize? Yes. Is there in some improvisation? Yes. Yeah. But as much as I criticize Bill O'Brien. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:36 I don't think Bill, I don't think Deshaun puts his hands on his helmet and says, what do you want now? Screw you, Bill, Brian. I'm going to run just the opposite of this. No, yeah. I mean, there are checks, and then there are, he, he can obviously improvise with as well as just about anybody in the entire NFL. But I don't think Deshaun Watson is just going rogue on Bill O'Brien. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:34:58 713212-5-790. 7-1-3-212-5-790. If you'd like to revisit with us via Twitter at SportsMT, at SportsMT, at SportsRvey and at Sports Talk 790 and at Pro Nick Lowe. I will say this, the one, the caller to bring up a good point. When you trade the draft picks, what were you doing? trying to do. Think about that. You would say it seemed like they were going all in, but then they traded away Judevian Clowny, so how are you going all in there?
Starting point is 01:35:25 They traded Judeoian Clowny, not because they thought they were going to get great value in return. They wanted the distraction out of the way. There's no other way around that. That they must have felt like Judeaibian Clowny was never going to play for the franchise tag this year, that he was going to skip a year of football. Then just let him sit out. Problem solved. We can all argue this. But the Texans, you know, the dealings that Bill O'Brien and J.D. Cloney had were so divisive that they had to make the move. That's sad.
Starting point is 01:35:56 Because imagine that Pass Rush how good it would have been if J.D. was there. The most awkward nooner you'll ever be a part of. This is the Matt Thomas Show. Matt Thomas Show continues. Here on Sports Talk 7 and 90. talking a lot of Texans and chiefs. What are they going to have to do to win? Where are you at on the team?
Starting point is 01:36:34 We're making the arguments earlier. I kind of feel like the Texans are basically, as Nick put it, on house money. They have won a wild card game. You went 10 and 6. You won the AFC South. I feel like my expectation level isn't much higher. Now, if they go and win against the Kansas City Chiefs, which is definitely within the realm of possibility.
Starting point is 01:36:57 That's just, to me, a cherry on top. As long as they don't get completely embarrassed and have some kind of 38 to 3 type of situation like they did against Denver Broncos, which we know they're capable of, I think even still, it would kind of put a damper on the end of the season, but I don't think three months from now,
Starting point is 01:37:14 I'm going to say the Texans failed this year and Bill O'Brien didn't do his job, et cetera, et cetera, with the talent levels that they have and considering how good the Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens are. If the Texans beat Kansas City this Sunday, we're going to lose our minds for a week, and we're absolutely going to believe the Texans can go to Baltimore and beat the Ravens. Championship Sunday. Okay.
Starting point is 01:37:38 We're going to absolutely think they can be treated. I will speak on behalf of the city. Okay. I mean, how do we even know that? Yeah, because you're beating a very good Kansas City team in Kansas City, Bill? I don't even know that. Well, we, we know. Baltimore is better, though.
Starting point is 01:37:52 Baltimore is the class of the NFL in my opinion. opinion. What's a separation? If Baltimore's a 10, what's Kansas City? Eight. Texans are like a six and a half. Tennessee? Six.
Starting point is 01:38:14 They've been hot, though. Really hot. Derek Henry. I mean, you know who's stopping Derek Henry? The doctor. Nobody. His own body. Yeah.
Starting point is 01:38:23 He's been really good. I know. And coming out of college, I just did not think he was going to have the lateral quickness to be an effective NFL running back, but he's been really good. Bill and Cinco Ranch on the Matt Thomas show. Hi, Bill. Bill, Duane. Hey, man. I deliver for a living, and I love to listen to you guys, you know, talk, I'll take on
Starting point is 01:38:43 everything because I really don't call, you know, except I don't believe it or not, because I don't think my take is all that, but I love listening to you guys. But I was getting out of my bill coming. I came back in, all I heard was Bill, DeWan, whatever your name is. Man, did I do something wrong? What did I do? You call under extra multiple names. Nobody does that. You're literally the only person. Oh, I mean, my bad.
Starting point is 01:39:05 I mean, some days I feel like Bill. Some day I feel like Duane. But, you tried to say that Bill was your, I remember you trying to say Duane was your, and Bill were brothers, and there were two different people. So you've lied. Believe it. Wow.
Starting point is 01:39:19 Back in the day, I mean, I apologize for that. Oh, okay. I think I'll apologize for that. But, you know, I was just really kidding. But the real reason why I call it, the day, I think the Texans have a shot if we could pull, if Jay, J.J. Y can pull it out, pull out a, a D.D. Clowne act on, uh, uh, uh, Mahom. And I hang up and listen. Oh, basically getting hurt. Oh. So you want them to, he wants to, he wants to, he wants to concuss Pat
Starting point is 01:39:47 Mahomes. Hmm. That would, that was when's got was a concussion. Yes. Yes. Which by the way, I didn't think that was some kind of crazy, dirty hit from. JD Clooney. I don't either. Nobody even mentioned word one about it because Wins continued to play. Nobody was calling that dirty when it happened. People were just calling that dirty afterwards after Clownie after Wins got hurt.
Starting point is 01:40:08 Yeah, the fact is Carson Wince just can't stay healthy. And you have invested money and a high draft pick on a guy that you just don't trust. And if you're trying to take Mahomes out, you go low.
Starting point is 01:40:24 Yeah, he did. I mean, he didn't have an ankle issues and leg issues this year, right? I don't think NFL players think that way. Except the Saints. Okay. Back in yesterday year. 713-212-5-790. 7-13-212-2-5-7-90.
Starting point is 01:40:43 Let's go to line number five and say hi to Gilbert in Spring Branch. Hi, Gilbert. Hi, how you guys doing today? Good. Thank you for calling. What's up? I knew when I was watching football growing up, whenever you won the coin toss, you always took the ball first to set a tone. Now, given the fact that y'all been saying all morning or all afternoon long
Starting point is 01:41:07 that the Texans should not get off this little start, because it could be doomed. So let's just say they win the coin toss. Because it seems like now football teams are deferring the second half. Do you think the Texans should take the opening kickoff? Because if they take the opening kickoff, they could probably set the tone, maybe kill some clock, run the football, hopefully score a touchdown for the first time this season, put up seven points,
Starting point is 01:41:33 and maybe set the tone on the game. How do you guys feel about that? Because I know, I guess it seemed like every team defers now. You know what? It's not a terrible thought, Gilbert, but I will say this. They want, they being coaches, they being teams, they believe momentum is way more important to open up the second half than it is the first. first. And I would not, if I'm Bill O'Brien, let this notion of, well, everybody craps on us because
Starting point is 01:41:59 we can't score first quarter touchdowns in order for us. So let's, let's prove those people wrong by making a decision what is against our best notion of if we win the toss, let's open up the second half. I am a huge proponent of having the ball first in the second half. So as much as your argument makes tremendous sense and kind of quieting the critics about not scoring touchdowns at least early on. You can have just as much momentum by playing defense in the first series and stopping a prolific offense like Kansas City's by doing just that. So I would probably go against what you said. And if I won the toss, I'd still want the ball to open up the third quarter. Yeah. You always defer because you can control the end of the second quarter
Starting point is 01:42:42 when you have the ball to try to take the air to the ball. That's why the Patriots were one of the first teams to start doing this. That way you can have the ball at the end of the first half and to start the second half. That's why you defer. That's why you do it. Any argument? Nope.
Starting point is 01:43:00 Okay. Thanks, Gilbert, for the call. Because here's what I do love. And we've all watched hundreds of games. I love that Phil goal or touchdown in the second quarter and then you get to start right over it. If it works out that way. The Patriots made their bones doing that.
Starting point is 01:43:14 It's a 10 and 14 point swing in a very short period of time. Yeah. And then you have people like, who was it? who was the coach who was like, no, we want the ball. We want the extra possession. Like, are you an idiot? You get the ball. The other team gets the ball in the second half.
Starting point is 01:43:27 There's no extra possession. Why do you think also, this is not trying to talk about in these two teams, although Andy Reid and Bill O'Brien probably would never be considered giants of the managing of the clock. But they're the two that we've paid most attention to because one's the Texans coach and one is a guy that's been a part of the playoffs a lot. I really don't want to hear any BS about clock management. I really don't want to hear it.
Starting point is 01:43:50 Unfortunately, for about 90 seconds, you're going to hear it. Why is it still a problem with just about every NFL coach? I think you have so many things going on. You have, I mean, especially in two-minute drill situations, especially if you're a coach who's calling the plays, you're thinking of the next play. You're thinking, do we clock it? You're thinking of all these other things and what play call
Starting point is 01:44:11 and what formation, what down and distance, how far away are we? And all there's so much going on that something. something suffers, and a lot of times that's clock management, and when do we call this time out? And should I challenge this or shouldn't I challenge it? There's so much on these guys' plates that some of them can't handle it because they're not prepared. But it's so important.
Starting point is 01:44:35 Yes. It's almost like special teams. Bad special teams, Ross, don't go to the Super Bowl. Bad punters, bad kickers, pat punt returners. Special teams matter, yeah. Special teams absolutely matter. This is James Arden.
Starting point is 01:44:49 What goes to hard. Three to shoot. Jacks up a third. Three hands. This is the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790. Are you kidding me? 235 on 790. Jason in the gallery on Sports Talk of the Matt Thomas show.
Starting point is 01:45:10 Jason, thank you for holding what's going on. Just calling to come in on the way I think that the Texas can win this a day. Go for it. You know, I've been watching the child, all through college and stuff, and he got this uncanny type of way of. coming from behind. He's like some of the race horses.
Starting point is 01:45:31 You know, if you hold him, you hold him, you hold him. And he's not going to let the next horse out running. So when they turn that corner, he'd come up and catch him and pass him up and just keep on going. And he's been doing it all season.
Starting point is 01:45:44 The Bill O'Brien just released the rings and just let him run. Just let him go. Until you hold him back like the last game that we just say with Buffalo. It was one quarter, six minutes left. and that's when he put him out there.
Starting point is 01:46:01 And he called up and passed him up. Ultimamah, I'd take another minute later, we wouldn't have won that game. Untimmy, the last play that they run, the quarterback sneak, spread the offense. And get to Duke Johnson someone. Or the son turned a corner or pitch or whatever. Untimmy, I looked at the lines,
Starting point is 01:46:25 I'm looking, and the way they had that line congested, everybody in itself. Sean don't wait that much for him to penetrate that. He had to be a refrigerator period of someone. You know what I'm saying? I think we had a better chance of going around or getting to running back, spread the line like a normal place. And we don't get it all right. We didn't get it.
Starting point is 01:46:47 But we had a chance to shut the door in, and we left it over. And it had everybody at the end of their seat. Go ahead. I don't hang up except for what you think. Okay. Is he asking for things that he's not doing already? I don't ever feel like, and maybe I'm wrong on this, I don't ever feel like that there are restraints put on Deshaun.
Starting point is 01:47:11 No, I don't think so. As I said yesterday, I take the oath. I'm never going to complain about him holding onto the football too long. I will. I know you will. You didn't take the oath, and that's acceptable. I get that. I did not.
Starting point is 01:47:24 I have not sworn an oath. I will do that. I, because I think at the end of the day, if you're going to get the magic, you're going to have to take the good with the bat a little bit on that. And way more times than not, Deshawn's ability to escape, Deshawn's ability. How about the ability over the course of the year, honestly, for him to jump to the pylon? How many pylon jumps he had in the last two seasons? How many the last month? I mean, he's very strong.
Starting point is 01:47:54 I mean, he's not huge. He's not like, you know, six foot five, two and he's. 150 pounds. He's not like Cam Newton sized, but for the size that he is, he's pretty stout. And you know what? All we've done is spend time talking about if that offensive line doesn't keep him, you know, doesn't get better. It's going to destroy Deshaun. Played 16 games this year.
Starting point is 01:48:14 Yeah. Well, he played 15. Right. Play what, 16 the year before that, right? I think so. Yeah. So I, there's very little about Deshawn's game. I'm going to complain about it, especially for a guy that is.
Starting point is 01:48:27 had a subpar offensive line that has had a play caller that frankly has not, I think it's, it has to warm up. Do you think that's what Bill O'Brien is? He warms up to the play calls, that it takes him 15 plays to get his mojo going to call things that are going to keep defenses guessing? Is there such a thing? I don't know about that. Is there, but why is this, why do things?
Starting point is 01:48:57 seem more innovative in the second half than they do in the first half? Is it because he's too afraid to take chances? Would Deshaun Watson ever catch a touchdown pass in the first quarter of a football game? In Deshawn's career, will he ever catch one? That's a good question. I hope he actually, I hope he doesn't. I'm okay with not those crazy gimmicky plays. You know what?
Starting point is 01:49:20 I would absolutely, I'm going to go with you on that. I don't know. If Diandre Hopkins never throws a pass again, I'll be okay. with that. If you want to do a reverse, I can accept that, change the feel a little bit, especially if you got blockers in front. But I don't know if I need to Sean catching passes.
Starting point is 01:49:40 I sure as hell don't want DeAndre throwing them. Yeah, he's not the greatest decision maker. If you want to go, let's go Statue of Liberty. Okay. Try something, if you want to go something crazy. Flea flicker? Have we seen a flea flicker? We saw flea flicker in the Charter's game earlier.
Starting point is 01:49:57 this year. Is that right? Oh, that is right. That's right. Yeah, it works. Weeks ago. Months ago. The flea flicker works as long as the line protects, because what you do is you give enough time to hand it off for the full backer running back to turn around, throw the ball back, and then DeShan is ready to rock and fire. But if that line collapses, you get Deshaun out of his comfort zone. He doesn't get to kind of throw the pass he wants to throw, and those things kind of deteriorate
Starting point is 01:50:24 pretty quickly. There's nothing more uninteresting than watching a. flea flicker implode. I'm not seeing the Texans do it, but a lot of teams. Like Tom Brady tried to throw a flea flicker it was two weeks ago, and he wanted him having to dump it off in the flat. That's not what flea flickers are all about. It's not fun.
Starting point is 01:50:39 Flea flickers are seven, or quarterback takes a seven step drop and heaves at 50 yards down the field. No matter what, even if it's into triple coverage. You've got to go for it. Well, at least what it does, in all honesty, it stretches the field out a little bit. But yeah, I don't want a flea flicker to a dump off to a tight end.
Starting point is 01:50:57 No, that's boring. It is boring. Let's say hi to Tank on the north side. Hi, Tank. Hey, Matt, how you doing? Good, buddy. What's going on? Oh, not much, man. I want to talk about how negative everybody's talking about the Texas across the country.
Starting point is 01:51:13 And, you know, we beat Kansas City in Kansas City. We beat Patriots here at home. And we beat Buffalo at home. Nobody said we could beat Buffalo. That's not true. A lot of people thought the Texans are going to be Buffalo. Well, all the guys I talked to, everybody thought Buffalo was going to run over us. By the way Denver did. You need new friends.
Starting point is 01:51:43 Because at first of all, the Texans were favored, and most people, most shows that I watch had the Texans winning. Me too. Hey, I'm just tired of everybody talking so negative about the Texans. Wait a minute. You have to describe the difference between negative and realistic and what is expected are three different animals there. Negative. When you are the underdog in a game, which the Texans will be, the underdog and a pretty big one, people are going to exploit the reasons why that decision was made that they are considered underdog.
Starting point is 01:52:17 It's not being negative. It's being honest. Being honest is one thing. You know, I think we're, I think everything's lined up perfectly for us, especially with Tennessee beating New England, and them going into Baltimore, and we're having to go to Kansas City to win. I mean, I think it's a lot enough for it. I think it's just our year to win the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:52:39 Me and Rock, you know, my little buddy, Rock, with the Astros car. We've been called in since they were. Oh, yeah, yeah. Love that. Hey, get a Texan car, and I'll drive in it, too. First things first. Get the, we get that Astros car going again. Thank you, Tank, for the phone call.
Starting point is 01:52:54 We'll talk to Chris in Sugarland. He is a Titans fan. Is this Titan Chris? Like the Titan Chris? The legendary Titan Chris? We'll talk to him and play, believe it or not, next. Daryl morey here. Let's go Rock this.
Starting point is 01:53:08 This is the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790. 247 on the Matt Thomas show. Is this Titan Chris? This is Titan Chris, Matt. How are you doing, my man? Where are you been? Hey, man. Every time I call, Matt, you guys.
Starting point is 01:53:37 you're a producer, they put me on hold for like 40, 45 minutes. What? Yeah, man. Every time I say I'm saying, Chris, it's like, I don't know. I don't know what it is. So I say, you know what? I'm just going to give up calling until I just have a little small message. I can give you guys.
Starting point is 01:53:53 And actually, I was calling with a good message. I was going, well, wish you guys and hope you guys wish you all a luck in the world against this next game against Kansas City. I think you guys can do it. If you, you know, you lead a ball to Deshaun. make sure you feature Hopkins in the first half, not along just the second half. I had all those good things of saying. And then you put me right behind a typical Texan fan that just said, we're going to the Super Bowl.
Starting point is 01:54:22 You killed all that, Matt. I mean, I don't do anything. I didn't know it was you. I had to guess it was you. By the way, I told you, I got man law for your running back. I said Travis Henry's only thing is stopping him is his hamstring. It's nobody else in the NFL stopping him this year. Nobody can stop him.
Starting point is 01:54:35 And that's why I'm trying to tell you guys. And the thing is what's so crazy about this, Matt, the national media is just not discovering something I've been knowing for the last three years. And I'm saying three years. I'm talking about even when DeMonger Murray was there, Derek Henry was always the better back. Even when they were trying to feature Dionne Lewis and have him, you know, run out those little screens and make him be the man.
Starting point is 01:54:56 And Derek Herons always have this capability. All he needed was to get the ball more than four or five times a quarter, like what they were doing at the beginning. They give it to them a couple of time. They stop them. They sit them on the sideline for the rest of the game and then try to play in the second half. It made no sense.
Starting point is 01:55:13 Now they're giving him the ball and you guys are seeing the effect of that. Man, this guy's, and everybody's nothing to do with Channing. Just get about Derek Henry and win. And AJ Brown is open, throw him the ball. You can do what we're doing. So what I was calling for, Matt,
Starting point is 01:55:29 is hope you guys win, hope that we have some luck and win. And so we can be the team that kick your butt all over Texas Stadium and out of the playoff again. I want to be the team that kick y'all out of the playoffs, man. I don't want no one else to be responsible doing that. All pleasure need to be up to those Tennessee Titans, man. So, Matt, I'll be calling you on Friday, wishing you guys luck. Hope you do the same for me so we can actually form a rivalry that can go on for the next five years.
Starting point is 01:56:04 Well, you know what, I'll be, Chris. Thank you for the phone call. It'll actually be the most meaningful Tennessee-Huston game ever. All the years of, well, it's the old orders against the new team. You're playing for the AFC championship. It'll be in Houston, Texas. It will be. And heaven help us if the Titans win.
Starting point is 01:56:24 Yeah. If the Titans win and the Chiefs win, oh, good God. Don't even think that. But if the Texans and Titans play, it will be. Will that be the biggest home game in the history? history of Houston professional football? Because the Texans, the owner's never hosted an AFC championship game. Yes.
Starting point is 01:56:46 Division, yes. It's kind of sad to think about, but yes. Dang. Five minutes left to go on the show. What should we do? We should play America's fastest growing sports game show. We simply called it. Believe it or not.
