Much larger than life.
Yeah.
Lunch timers is the Matt Thomas show.
1202 at H-town.
What's happening in lunch timers?
Good afternoon to you and welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas show.
This is Sports Talk 790.
In fact, I'll let the Jackson's ask you.
This question.
Star Wars effects on this?
It is Star Wars out of the rockets.
I'm good.
Catch you, too.
One question.
Was that Tito singing that last verse?
I'm not really feeling that.
There's a lot of Jackson's involved.
The non-Star Wars version.
Yeah, what is going on here?
This is the official music video.
Yeah, it's terrible.
Okay, well, this is radio.
Play some asteroids, Matt.
All right.
It's pretty intense.
It feels like the Jackson's were doing this video
when they're all high.
I'm sure they were.
It was just, yeah.
So this is the Jackson's not the Jackson Five, right?
Definitely not the Jackson Five.
It's the Jackson's.
This is what Michael's like, I got to get out of this group.
Start my solo career.
There's just not enough Jerry Curl juice to go around.
Okay.
Line one, are you feeling it?
Technical issue.
Technical snafu is what you like to say.
I like when you say that.
Line two, are you feeling it?
I guess I should get the numbers out first.
713-212-5-790.
It wasn't the prettiest thing yesterday, but effective nonetheless.
Remember, the Titans had won four games in a row coming into the game yesterday.
Ryan Tanna-Hell was having these amazing numbers.
Yes.
And Derek Henry, apparently his hamstring is shredded, but still was able to get, what, 53 yards in the first 10 carries he had?
he ripped off a big one, but I don't think he was kind of in the second half.
That's what I mean, Rossi, it's a quality win.
It's just like I thought, you can't play any more horribly than they did against Denver.
Yes.
And then they bounced back and got the win at Tennessee.
And now all they have to do is one of the next two games.
That's it.
Right, yeah.
And they normally have to come on here, Matt, and laugh and make fun of your takes.
but you nailed this one absolutely on the head.
I was wrong.
You were right.
From what I saw from in last week,
there was no way I could pick them in Tennessee on the road
with the way that the Titans were playing.
And you said, just watch.
This is the way they operate.
They pull you out and they pull you back in.
And that's what they did.
That's what they did.
So the question today,
as we look forward to visiting with many of you
over the course of the next two hours and 50 minutes,
is, I'm not asking you, do they pull you all the way in.
That would be just silly.
But how much did they try, how much did the magnet try to pull you back?
How much did a little bit?
Or you at least taking a peek back in?
I would.
Just like I, just like as bad as the Denver game ones, that was Wild Card Saturday.
The Texans came back and bounced back and did what they were supposed to do.
Because I do think at the end of the day,
the Houston Texans are a better football team in Tennessee.
I think Tennessee got on a hot streak.
Now, granted, that massive wide receiver was as a, well, I wrote it down, white, not white.
Who's the big receiver for Tennessee that caught everything?
A.J. Brown? It was a color.
A.J. Brown was just.
It's true.
But he was huge.
Yes.
I thought he was, it looks like he was wearing like 1990s shoulder pads.
He looks like he was a defensive tackle, and he caught everything.
Well, John Hussmith looked like a defensive tackle, except he was running for 57 years.
yards on a tight-in sweep.
Do we have the slowest corners in the NFL?
I mean, if John Hussmith is outrunning Jonathan Joseph, that's a problem, right?
Yes.
I've never seen, I don't know if I've ever seen a tight-in sweep ever from him outside of the backfield, set like a running back.
And he's just pushing people aside.
And then our guy Whitney Merciless.
Yeah, he ran down Whitney, who said his hamstring shredded.
Although he made a good point.
Zach Cunningham should have thrown a block there.
Oh, he's throwing Zach Cunningham
under the bus.
Yeah, he did.
If not for Justin Reed's tap into the hands of Whitney,
yeah.
I would have been two touchdowns away from grabbing a ball.
Yeah, so, so as in, it's never going to happen.
So I'm still three,
I'm still the third Whitney Marshall's touchdown away from getting in the football.
Okay.
So far he's at zero.
You're on your way.
I thought I was.
I knew when he started running on the sidelines and run out of gas.
Yeah, but he flashed a little bit of wheel.
was at first. He did, and then
that linebacker speak came into play,
and then it became a hot mess. Well, yeah,
Johnny Smith ran him down, and Zach Cunningham
could have blocked him. He just let him walk right by him.
Yeah, well, Zach,
you got to blame Zach.
You have to be mad at Zach. A little bit.
I'm more concerned
about the endurance of 100 yards of Whitney.
By the way, I try the text of Whitney to come on
the show today. I just come
to surprise. He's not returning text.
He is, you know
how you have that group of friends that's in
Now, Norton and I are like, we don't text a lot.
Uh-huh.
But he's a top 10 terrible texter.
Where am I?
Where do I fall on this?
You're like at number three.
I'm sorry.
Nick, you're not much better, my man.
I don't mean anything by it.
Nick's better than you are.
He's just, but he's still a plus hour delayed.
Okay.
Well, I mean, I keep my phone off while I'm here on the radio because I'm a professional.
That's true.
I don't really notice text coming in.
Yeah.
If you had my number, just do me a favor.
Text me.
I just say, when I,
text you, please text her back in a relatively fast manner.
Adam Clanton is a phenomenal texture.
Clans good, you're great.
Adam Wexler is crap.
A Wexler's up and down.
If he needs me to help him out with something.
He's definitely more down than up.
Yeah.
If he needs me to like fill in with him, he's on top of it.
Oh, is that right?
So he's selfish Wexler.
That's okay.
All right.
We are looking forward to having you guys on a radio show today between now and
at three o'clock.
713-212-1-2-5-7-90.
Yeah, well, I do want to talk about the game.
Quite a bit of superlatives.
I thought a really rough start for Deshaun Watson,
but he bounced back beautifully.
How about the fourth quarter of DeAndre Hopkins?
How about Carlos Hyde Rossi going for a thousand yards?
This guy has never been able to stand a football team more than about, what,
17 games, 19 games, 20 games, tops.
And that's a Bill O'Brien, Feather in the Cap, general manager move.
Yep.
It's just Lamar Miller was
Who?
Yeah, exactly.
I knew that Lamar Miller going down wasn't going to be a big deal because he's, to me,
he is a replacement level running back, but I didn't expect when Carlos Hyde came over,
I was like, okay, cool.
I was more excited for Duke Johnson, to be honest, but Carlos Hyde has been the bell cow for the Texans.
The combination has been really good.
Has Duke been underwhelming at performance level or above what you thought?
Slightly below.
Slightly below.
But I think that has to do with you.
It's not his fault, though.
When he's out there getting 10, 15 carries and catching five balls, he's effective.
Yeah, but he's not catching carrying 15 times ever feels like.
No, I think it's Duke's underwhelming because not because of Duke's dropping the ball or anything.
He's just not getting usage.
He's got to be, I mean, it happened in Cleveland.
It's got to be something with, I mean, he must not be good in pass pro or he must not be good at grasping the office.
Yeah.
There's got to be something because the talent is there.
All right.
Other things to get to, the Patriots are confirmed cheaters.
Rockets tonight.
Not according to Patriots fans.
Rockets in San Antonio Plano night.
The Rockets should be already up to zero in the game.
I mean, don't you feel like they should be owed a basket?
That would be fair. Yes.
What happened in the game?
Was that, what game was it where they took?
PJ Tucker.
Yes.
PJ Tucker.
Was it Friday or Saturday?
I can't even remember.
It was the Wednesday game in Cleveland.
Oh, Wednesday.
Was it last Wednesday?
Geez.
Okay.
Yeah.
What's going on with?
We'll get in a dollar.
What's going on with that NBA?
Yeah, NBA not particularly happy.
That we may.
You can take three points off the board.
15 minutes later, but you can't add two?
Imagine that.
713-212-5-7-90.
All things in the Texans game.
Joe Burrell weeping at the Heisman Trophy Award.
Got zero problem with that.
Yeah.
And the Chris Gordy tweeting about it like 15 times.
That I had to block him momentarily.
713-212-7-90.
Our time is 12-13 and is the Matt Thomas show.
Matt has eye trouble.
He's having trouble seeing Dallas win anything anytime soon.
Sorry about that friends to the North.
Back to the Matt Thomas Show.
Pretty much, yeah.
I mean, you gotta give tenancy credit.
They did their job and, you know, had some things covered up,
but, you know, that's when, you know, your best players got to make plays.
And D.Hop definitely did that.
And, you know, I was able to get the ball to him and let them just go work.
I think D.Hop had four catches in the final quarter for 99.
yards.
Probably save somebody
a fantasy playoff game.
He and DeAndre and Deshawn
they make 35-yard passes
look rather routine, do they not?
It flashes. It doesn't seem like
it's consistent. And Deshawn Watson
was very inconsistent. He had a
couple of
bad picks. He had the one, I mean, the
second one in the red
zone that was trying to go to Will Fuller. I mean,
he got tipped at the line. Even if it didn't get
tipped at the line, that bad boy was going to get picked by a
linebacker that was dropping on cover.
Tennessee swarmed the play.
Yeah, but at the end of the day, he got the win.
19 to 27 for Watson for 243, two touchdowns, two I&Ts, two bad I&Ts, frankly.
Passer renting of 92.1.
He actually had a lower passer inning than Ryan Tannahill did.
A lot of that is because Tannahill was just throwing the ball deep down the field.
Their puntor, Kern, is 0 for one.
So it's fourth down.
Yes.
And you're going to try to pin the Texans back deep.
That will be the game playing, correct?
And the quarterback had a nice arm, but he threw a halo pass.
This was at the, where was this?
At the end of the second quarter, I think.
No, I thought it was in the second half.
I think it was, wasn't it like a minute to go in the second quarter when they were about to go to the half?
Okay, whatever it was.
But point being is if you were really going to go for it, just go for it.
Don't try to fake them out and send the punter on a deep route towards the corner of the end zone.
I mean, the percentages of that pass unless the Texans just fell asleep during special teams.
And the Texans typically have not done that this year.
Yeah, it was a fourth and ten with a minute 14 to go in the second at Houston's 37.
Just really an odd play.
It was.
I mean, they took a shot and you had a one-on-one situation, which is probably what they were looking for.
and so he said one-on-one we're going to toss it up to you
and hopefully you make a play.
Yeah.
Because Brett Kern, if he was an actual quarterback
and could have put some mustard on that,
Lonnie Johnson was beat by, I can't even remember who he was throwing to.
Yeah, but when you throw it up for grabs like a pop fly.
Right.
It was a match shop special is what you're saying.
Do you remember when you, do you ever play 500 as a kid?
No, what's that?
Where you have a quarterback, you have three or four guys down the field
and you catch the ball, it's worth 100 points.
And then if you catch it like on a bounce, it's worth 50.
It's basically just every time you caught the ball.
Well, when you used to play 500 when I was kid,
we threw the ball up high in the air.
The whole point was to try to catch these lobs.
Oh, well, we'd throw it high up in the air when we were playing smear the person who has the ball.
We don't play that game anymore.
What? Smeared the person who has the ball.
You didn't play that?
Wow.
I thought we called it butt tag.
Excuse me?
I was not playing butt tag as a youth.
No, no. Sprite eagle.
Spret eagle.
Excuse me?
Yeah, we played spurt.
butt tag and spread eagle.
What were you growing up?
What did you play?
What did you play?
What was like your game?
Yeah, I think so.
Kill the man with the ball.
That's what we called it.
Oh, okay.
I got you.
Man, what do today's kids playing in 2019?
Every game's got to go through a political commitment.
They're playing Fortnite on their phone.
That's right.
They're not outside playing.
Are you kidding me?
They're on the Snapchat.
My daughter now is on this thing called TikTok.
Yes, TikTok is the new.
It's like Vodon.
except you can go up to like a minute.
Yeah.
It's very confusing.
I tried to get on there and yeah,
it was a bunch of like a 12 year old just making videos of them.
Dancing.
Yeah,
dancing or pranking their friends or something.
Yeah, but she's a TikTokaholic.
So hopefully it's not dangerous.
I don't think so.
All right.
So 713-212-5-790.
All right, here's what I'm more concerned about.
Not more concerned about.
I'm concerned about Mike Vrabel's mustache.
I don't like it.
It was.
Yeah, it's not November anymore.
Yeah, it's awkward.
he got very, very cranky
towards a member of the Nashville media
and I think I'm going to have to side with the coach this time.
I'll let you hear it coming up at the bottom of the hour.
I'm intrigued.
Yeah, it concerns the very,
one of the final plays of the game
late in the fourth quarter with the Titans Down.
So we'll let you hear some of that audio coming up in a moment.
But the Texans do control their own destiny,
which is usually good,
especially with two weeks left to go in the year.
Even if they lost, they control their own destiny, correct?
Yeah, because all they do is win two in the next three.
I've told you, remember I've been telling you for weeks that Buccaneers game's going to be sneaky.
But yesterday's game was not a, I was having an argument with a parent on my son's,
and my daughter's volleyball team.
Yeah.
I said, it's not a must win.
Hey, let me give you a high five, man.
Thank you very much.
We don't do grown ass.
That's our first high five in the middle of.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's not a must win game.
It wasn't because the must win becomes a play when you have to win the second game.
Thank you.
And now they've got one chance to win.
that must-win game.
Well, they will face the Buffalo
bills in the first round of the AFC playoffs, more
than likely.
How do you think that's going to go?
That'll be a tough game, actually.
I would wonder what would
be the odds on that?
I bet the Texans would be like two-point favorites or something.
I would say it'd be less than that.
Really?
Do you think Buffalo would be favorite?
I think Buffalo is, first of all,
goes on a road and wins in tough environments.
Pittsburgh is as tough as it gets.
Their defense is good.
The only problem is they couldn't hold on to the football last night.
Again, I'm watching in and out of the game.
I had watched football all day long.
I wasn't going to spend three and a half.
half straight hours watching Buffalo Pittsburgh.
But they had a hard time holding out on the football.
But they got a good running game.
The quarterback Josh Allen is effective.
And that defense forces lots of turnovers.
At Oliver.
And of course, America's greatest cougar at Oliver.
How about a good day for the Cougars?
I thought you were America's Greatest Cougar.
I'll go with Jennifer Lopez.
Yeah.
I'm Ryan Carey.
Jennifer Anderson.
Can we change a topic?
Yes.
Back to football.
Okay, so Ed Oliver's playing well.
Our buddy Greg Ward with a touchdown catch yesterday for the Philadelphia Eagles.
That was big for me in Daily Fantasy.
You know what all it is?
It's just Cougars, U of H Cougars making a difference in America.
Wonderful.
Case Keenham holding the clipboard effectively, clapping.
Very good job.
Headset on.
Yes.
I don't know any other cougars have played yesterday.
I'm sure there were others.
I'm sure they're all over the place.
Yeah.
All right.
But let's get into the Texans a little bit more as that we celebrate a victory from them.
They were
Yeah, I thought yesterday
Deshawn was good, not great.
I think he has to be great
in order for the Texans to win a playoff game.
Agreed.
But we do need to give them credit.
They did go against, as I said before, Ross,
the second hottest team in the AFC.
Baltimore's been the hottest.
Tennessee had lost in a month.
That's a good road to win.
But you know what it is?
It's strange as we say that.
The Texans haven't had many difficult nights
in Tennessee.
I don't know what their career record is.
I know it's lousy when they go to play the Colts in Indianapolis,
but they hold their own in Tennessee more times and not.
Yeah, but I mean, that doesn't have a whole lot of bearing on what happened this year.
I mean, like you said, they're a hot team.
Ryan Tanna had been playing well.
They'd won four in a row.
I picked them to lose.
And you go up there and you take care of business.
You play some big boy football.
You make some plays.
You get some timely over, you get some timely turnovers, as was the one in the red zone that
Whitney Mercos took all the way back.
But you made enough plays.
and you got the job done and you got to win, and now you're 9 and 5, and you already controlled your own destiny, but it was good to get that one out of the way where you can just, if the scenario comes up, you can just take it easy on week 17 and maybe not play Deshaun Watson if you take care of business in Tampa.
They win the game, they'll go to 10 and 5. They're going against a Buccaneers team. James Winston's thrown for 450 yards and back-to-back weeks. Apparently, though, he's got no receivers left.
Yeah, Godwin went out. Mike Evans is on IR.
Godwin went out with a hamstring injury.
I'm going to assume there was other receivers there because you don't throw $4.50 just on your own.
Yeah, they have Rashad Perriman and some other guy I can't remember his name.
We're going to be talking more Buccaneer football than I thought we'd ever do on this radio show.
1228. It is the Matt Thomas show.
I want to hear the excitement in your voice because I know that I'm ready to not tell the people that I work with in other cities that fans in Houston only call when the Texans lose.
We don't do that, do we, Ross?
We celebrate when they win, yes?
Yes.
713-212-5-790.
We're going to play what you're talking about Bob coming up at 1 o'clock today.
If you've not heard that bit, it's really interesting and informative.
It's where Ross gets to guess the soundbites of what Bill O'Brien had to say.
We have an NFL recap coming up at 1.30 this afternoon.
We have a major trade in baseball yesterday involving another American League West opponent.
We'll discuss that.
And Joe Burroughins the Heisman.
The Patriots are cheaters.
and the Rockets need to get back on their mojo.
They're only 6 and 6 in their last 12 games.
Tonight they have the San Antonio Spurs.
And when you walk in the arena, it should say,
before the first opening tip,
Rockets 2, Spurs 0.
But it won't.
But it won't.
This is All-Pro running back, Ricky Williams.
Stay connected to Houston Sports,

1235.
Matt Thomas, show,
a Monday. Are y'all working today? Is everybody just in a haze? I mean, I know that when the
Texans, when we don't get any phone calls, so I'm just not even going to bother with that anymore.
Sucks. That's why sports media says it's okay when y'all lose, when the teams lose,
because y'all are more invigorated. More vim and vigor? Yeah, you're more vested, frankly.
Okay. I guess they're not feeling it. We're playing that song in two o'clock.
Can you feel it? By the start, minus the Star Wars sound effects. The answer is,
No.
No, you can't feel it.
I'm not feeling it.
I haven't felt in a long time.
What?
So, fourth quarter.
Of the Texans' Titans games.
Texan's Titans game.
Brian Anger goes out to punt the football.
And he's at the 43-yard line.
He punts it, actually punts it 44-yard.
I don't know where it was.
It was, yeah, 44-yard line.
He punts at 43.
Ball's going to go in the end zone.
because I think Tennessee had all 11 people up.
Right.
Well, LaShawn Sims went back and got it.
That's right.
And he rushed it 11 yards to the Tennessee 12.
Now, if he doesn't go after it, it goes in the end zone, it goes to the 20-yard line,
and there's a few more seconds left to go.
Now, again, the chances for Tennessee to go 30, 50, 75 yards.
And Ryan's suck-up's been terrible, by the way.
So it's not like he'd be anything close to a gimmie, right?
Right.
So he gets it.
And apparently Paul Koharski, who is a longtime Nashville sports writer,
I think he works for ESPN or did at one point.
He did work for ESPN.
He has been on this show before.
On the Matt Thomas show?
Yes, years ago.
I was going to say, has he gotten too big for his britches now?
No, I don't think so.
Like, we're going to get into that too big for the Britches Club.
The number one person on that list is Zach Lowe.
Zach Lowe used to come on this show.
I wouldn't say Sam a regular, but once or twice a year.
Yeah, Zach Lowe, Sam, Sam will come out once in a while.
Tom Curran.
I'll see Sam on the West Coast.
We'll ring Tom E. Curran from the CS in New England is way too big time for us.
Let's see.
Who else used to always come on and no longer?
There's a list.
Once you hit a certain level, you're like, I cannot be.
They've gone all big time on us.
We've ever had Adrian Juan Jahouski on the show?
I think we did have Woge way back in the day.
Way, way back in the day.
All right.
So back to it.
So Paul Koharski...
Remember he was Yahoo for a little bit?
Yes.
Paul Koharski, I believe, is a little bit of a surly human being.
Okay.
Surly media, which makes him not...
He's with us, but we're not proud to claim him.
He goes in after Rabel, I guess it's the first question in the post-game press conference
about why Lashon Sims would dare touch the football at the one-yard line.
And I don't think Mike Ribble wanted any part of that.
There's a lot of plays in that game and whether the ball's on the 20, I mean, how fitting that you would ask that question, Paul, that of all those plays in that game, walking in here, we're stretched.
I said, one idiot is going to ask me that question.
Like, okay, whether it's on the 20-yard line or the 11-yard line.
Like, let's go back and talk about the game, Paul.
Is Ryan suck up still doing a good job?
Well, we had one blocked.
I don't know.
We'll have to go look at the protection.
So, again, I thought when we got them past the line of scrimm,
they went in on the extra points.
I don't know what happened on the block.
Was it low?
Did we get penetration?
Pushback.
I've told you that process is about the snap, the hold, and the protection.
Again, as I'm watching this yesterday, I saw the video because Kuharski tweeted out,
hey, look at me getting into a fight with the head coach.
Instead of just saying, you know what, I'll work this out like grown-ass men.
I'm going to film myself getting in a fight and put it on my Twitter account.
Rable, I'm pretty sure.
I don't know what Paul Kuharski looks like.
but I'm pretty sure
Frable could put him
in a body bag if you wanted.
Frable's mustache
I just don't want to root
for the guy.
I want to root for a
titan but I certainly
want to root for a guy
that needs to shave his mustache.
So I guess there's some kind of history.
So what's the backstory on this?
Do we know he must have said
something about suck up
in weeks past
and gotten shut down
and so he brought it up again
as he's in.
That was an antagonistic way.
Right?
That's what I'm saying.
Very rarely
do I ever want to defend coaches
because coaches are generally speaking eh-holes.
They just aren't nice people.
Very, very few.
Let's say Rossi I've dealt with either as a member of a team broadcast
or covering somebody.
Let's say I've dealt with 100 coaches in my life.
Maybe 15 of them have been nice.
When I moved to Utah in 2005, for 2004.
Was Jerry Sloan still there?
No, I'm talking about on the college side.
There was this young up-and-coming coach
who had the University of Utah playing undefeated football.
Their quarterback was Alex Smith.
The head coach's name was Urban Meyer.
I got a chance to get to know Urban a little bit.
What a horrible mean S-O-B-E-E-Is.
Is, was, and probably always will be.
I mean, just my way of the highway dictatorship,
scream, yell, make you feel dumb.
So most coaches are going to do that because they're just,
they're in their bubble.
and they're not nice people.
And I don't know if Vrable's a good guy, a bad guy or a different guy,
but he wanted no part of antagonistic reporter.
And in this particular case, I think I got Vrabel's back on this one, surprisingly.
Should he have caught that?
Furture in the end zone.
I turned into a pick one other way.
Should he have caught it?
Like, come on, Joe.
Like, you're a professional writer.
I don't know.
Like, the guy came in and hit him as the ball got there.
Okay, talking about the way that Justin Reed knocked the ball out.
Should he have caught it?
Now, I don't mean...
Raibs is going off with these people.
I don't mean to peel back the curtain here.
But no to journalist.
What would you have expected him to say?
Nah, you know, it'd have been nice if he did,
but I wasn't expecting it.
In reality, it'd be better if he didn't catch it
and it just went incomplete.
So no.
Do you know what the reality is of this guy's in all honesty
is that...
It's not easy, and I've been in this position before,
it's not easy to interview a coach as soon as he's lost a football game.
It's called a cooling off period.
In theory, 10 minutes after the game is done,
he's in front of a microphone trying to explain what just happened for the previous three hours.
And sometimes emotions are raw.
A lot of times they don't know what happened.
But media, and I put myself absolutely in this category,
you don't know how to phrase a question properly because you're afraid he's going to be pissed at you.
Either you go at him, like really the answer, the question should have been,
how upset are you that your guy didn't catch the ball?
That's what he wanted to say, but you can't say that to a coach.
So instead, he flips it around to make it a silly question, which then gets basically the same response.
Should he have caught that?
I turned into a pick one other way.
Should he have caught it?
Like, come on, Joe.
Like, you're a professional writer.
I don't know.
Like, the guy came in and hit him as the ball got there.
Now that I'm being presented with more evidence, though,
I'm starting to think maybe it's on Rable's shoulders.
He's going after multiple guys.
No, but think about the question.
And, again, I'm not trying.
It's not a good question.
The head coaches get asked stupid questions after every single.
You're saying you've got to be better than that.
And every press availability ever, coaches have been asked stupid questions.
So it would have been better if the report, Joe, because we're talking about Joe.
I'm not here to make a full judgment yet.
But should Joe have said how mad are you?
Who was the receiver?
I have to look at the play by play.
Who is the ball was intended to?
Yeah, I can't.
I can't recall.
Should that receiver, how, I guess the most appropriate way would have been.
That was kind of a bad question.
How disappointed are you that he didn't catch it?
And then you would say, okay, I'm very disappointed.
That was a huge turnover.
I like how he goes, you're a professional writer.
Come on.
But to answer, just throw the question to him, should he have caught it?
Could have framed the question better for sure.
Yeah.
But now that I hear him going after multiple people.
But the reason why the question was...
I don't remember Mike Malarkey going after everybody in Nashville.
I don't remember anyone who remember anything about Mike Malarkey in Nashville, except them just losing year after year.
Right.
But the point is that the reason why he did that, the reporter did it, is because he's trying to soften it because, A, he's probably a little bit scared.
and B, he does not want to get the
boorish answer that he've ultimately got anyway.
And we also do know that Mike Rable is under the Bill O'Brien coaching tree,
so he learned from the best when it comes to going after reporters by name.
Is he under the, is he a Bill O'Brien disciple?
Or is he more like a Bill Belichickettist.
But aren't you more of a Belichickieck guy?
Did he coach under Belichick?
No, but he played for his entire career, though, essentially, right?
Well, he didn't coach under him.
He's under his player tree.
Do you think he got his coaching chops from Bill O'Brien or from Bill Belichick?
I think he learned a little bit, probably more from maybe Romeo Cronnell.
It starts with me.
I've got to do a lot of things better.
Okay.
All right.
We've got the, which you're talking about Bill coming up,
including some interesting news about JJ Watt.
I don't know how interesting it is, but it is interesting.
I think people are interested, don't you think?
Yeah, let's check.
That's okay.
Line two, go ahead.
line one and line two aren't working today, Ross.
It's okay.
I think our conversation has been good so far today.
I've been thrilled.
Information.
Yes.
A little bit of joking.
And Mike Rable going after reporters.
And Mike Vrable, not happy with people.
Should he have caught that?
Should he have caught it?
Should he have caught it?
Come on, Joe.
Like, you're a professional writer.
I don't know.
Like, the guy came in and hit him as the ball got there.
You're going to tell me, listen to that in his cadence and all that.
Tell me you don't hear a little bit of Bill.
O'Brien right there. Oh, I hear a lot of Bill O'Brien.
Okay. But that's, but that's the thing.
She'd you. They're all. Come on, Joe.
Bill O'Brien wouldn't have done that? What I tell you, 15% of the coaches I've ever
dealt with are nice. 85% are Bill O'Brien's. That's what they are.
Because they get, they put themselves around in the bubble, and they don't ever get
out of it, and they think that they can treat media that way. But in this particular
case, I got Rambles back on this. Rightfully so. You and your soundbites.
This is Craig Ackerman, and the Rockets get to.
the job done.
Oh, here's another new catchphrase I have for you.
Good gracious.
Good gracious!
You're listening to the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790.
Ross had a bust out of good gracious with Hardin.
I know you did.
I played that highlight at least two times.
God Almighty.
I mean, what, 109 points or something in those two games?
Yes.
We're talking about the games against Orlando.
Cleveland and Orlando.
And then he looked like he ran out of gas the next night.
Yeah, a fourth quarter didn't necessarily look like he had his legs.
A lot of the three-pointers he was taking were short.
Yep.
Rockets tonight against San Antonio.
We'll have it for you on Sports Talk 790.
Michael Connor with the Rockets launch pad at 6 o'clock.
That's right.
And you get to rest tonight.
Yes, I will be off this one.
I won't be working Thursday.
Oh, I've got to remind.
I won't be working Thursdays either.
Okay.
It's good, could be a good week.
I don't know that I'm working a Rockets game at all.
I've been doing like three, four a week.
Well, Thursday, we're in Los Angeles, taking on the Clippers.
Friday is Phoenix.
And then I think we're off Saturday.
I don't have to schedule this.
I think there is a game Saturday.
Maybe a day off in between.
That's what it is.
Yeah, so day off in between, then it's Phoenix.
I like Phoenix.
Good town.
By the way.
Talking Stick Arena, Resort Arena.
Congratulations to the, I just got this.
The Time Magazine Entertainer of the Year.
Do you know who it is?
Lizzo.
I don't even know who.
I didn't know who Lizzo was 48 hours ago.
What?
What does she sing?
Nick can play some of her.
I don't know.
Are you a Lizzo fan?
Yeah, I think she's a talent.
Yes.
As far as Pop-Ax go,
I'm not going to call her
one of the great all-time transcendent.
How long has she been around?
Since about 2017,
but she really blew up this year.
What's like her number one hit?
This is Juice.
Look, get a little groove going here, Matt.
She just does like light poppy fun music.
Her big hit is Truth Hirts.
Just like a light poppy stuff.
Very light, very poppy.
She's from, you know, she's from Houston.
Well, she's born in Detroit.
You know what?
She's me.
She was born in Detroit and then moved to Houston when she was like 10.
That's me.
However, she is not very light.
Yeah, she's kind of heavy set.
That's okay.
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that Nick.
Fat shame on the show.
Nick, why you got to bring that out?
Yeah, Ross.
And Nick?
Just the first thing you notice when you see her.
That's not the first thing I noticed.
I think we need to have a Rockets game.
The first thing.
Well, she is a Rockets game.
She went to University of Houston.
Then we're besties.
And she dropped out, I think.
Well, she studied the flute.
Oh, I've heard this song.
She's like a singer and a rapper,
plays the flute.
She's all right.
She's UA.
She's good people then.
Yeah, see?
She stirred up some controversy last week
because she basically wore a thong
to the Lakers game.
Oh, I did see that.
Yeah, that's her.
She, um...
She's an inspiration to millions, Matt, because she's very proud of her body.
And that's good for her.
I'm proud of her to not...
I'm happy for her as well.
Yeah.
I just don't know if I want to see a thong.
Yeah, you don't have, you know, you know, some guys are into that.
To each his own. Right.
To eat his own.
Oh, pass.
I think she's very talented, personally.
All right.
We got what you're talking about Bill coming up at the top of the hour.
Okay.
And then we have, then we have NFL rewind at 130.
We've got to play some of that audio of the Patriots at 130.
Okay.
That Jay Glazer got from Fox yesterday.
How damning is that?
By the way, how did it?
Because Patriots fans are acting like it's nothing.
Well, that's because they're always dude, because they're arrogant a bunch of, you know what's.
Isn't Patriot fan one of the more arrogant bunches out there?
I mean, well, I mean.
Let me just be brutally honest with you because that's what the show is about, brutal honesty.
I'm scared to death.
My beloved Astros cheated like a mother.
The team that I've loved since I was seven years old.
Okay?
I'm not naive to that.
They did.
And I'm not naive to think that the Patriots...
Now, the biggest thing that I have seen in the national scale of this is that most people that are in the know on this believe that really Bill Belichick knew nothing of this.
and that this filming of the coaches and the substitution patterns was not on his watch.
But the question is, whose watch was it on?
Where right now, and this hurts me, no one can tell me whether yes or no A.J. Hinch knew about this.
Everybody at this point has come to the defense of Bill Belichick.
If it's happened, then A.J. knew about it.
Stop talking about the asteros.
Sorry.
I'm just trying to segue.
Oh, okay.
I don't want to bring up potential salty days and miserable nights.
All right.
So do you really think that Belichick could not have known about this?
Because, man, everybody is telling, is at least saying that all of the things that were done look like a guy that really didn't know what was happening.
Doesn't mean they're not going to get away with it.
Just because he didn't know doesn't mean it wasn't something that they were using.
Now, here, let me ask you that.
Maybe he's just trying to keep his head out of it for plausible deniability.
How about this?
How about if you're a college coach and you're running this successful program
and an assistant coach under you and a booster and all that start handing out money to people?
Is it on your watch as the head football coach because you employed the assistant coach?
Like it was for Briles, like it was for Urban Meyer with the Zach Smith situation.
I'm just throwing out of some possibilities on this.
I think the Patriots are going to get dinged for it.
Why do they, and I need to know why they needed eight straight minutes for this documentary.
Because they were cheating.
How do they need eight straight minutes of Bingle's sideline signals?
Cheat. They were cheating.
That's what I think too.
Ross, if we were to get into the deep world of sports, I mean, a world like way back in the back of the room,
where the secret laboratory, were there, you know, they say when they make the sausage, you know?
Okay.
How awful would it be in professional sports?
would we be dumbfounded by all of the tactics
of sports teams do to gain a competitive advantage
it doesn't involve having the better athletes?
There's people involved in stuff.
We played, I mean, it was when you were out,
did you hear that Steve Belichick audio?
Like, he's done some stuff.
He's been through some things.
Oh, he knows way more.
I feel like he was like eight years old
and Bill had him like crawling through air vents.
Yeah.
Sign stealing.
Yeah.
Filming.
Yes.
Maybe an attempt.
for a team to go into a locker room and steal a playbook.
And the Patriots had the controversy earlier this year when Sean McDermott had to shuffle some Patriots staffers off the field because they were watching their walkthrough.
Again, when I'm at a poker table, Ross, I like to play by the rules.
I don't want to see your hand because I want to beat you without artificial intelligence.
I will warn you once.
And then after that, I'm going to watch my cards.
I'm going to look at your card.
You get one warning.
Is that the Ross rule?
It's a courtesy, yeah.
I shouldn't even afford.
I'm going to change my tune on that.
You get one free pass.
And then I'm looking at your cards and I'm still your money.
Yes.
Because you were warned.
Yeah.
That's them.
That's them not policing themselves.
Is the Matt Thomas show.
Here we go.
104 on the second hour of the Matt Thomas show.
If you'd like to join us, we'd love to have you.
But it is a win, so there's nothing to talk about.
713, 21, 2,2, 5.
790. A big win.
It was big. They're one step away.
We're going to play that song in it in 55 minutes or now.
We're going to do it without the Star Wars Fakes.
Can you feel it?
I can feel it.
Calm in the air tonight.
We determined it was the Jackson's, not the Jackson's Five, correct?
I think it was...
Yes, the Jackson's.
All right. 713-212-5-790.
Every Monday following a Texans game, I just love this segment.
I don't know if people love it or not.
I love it.
I think it's fantastic.
I think it's interesting.
It's something we like to do called this.
Coach O'Brien.
This is where Ross has to guess what Coach O'Brien had to say.
And we're going to go off a little bit off the beaten track here.
Colin Gillespiea.
29 seconds.
This is not an easy one to open up with.
Galaspia made that tackle
on a, was a kicker punt return.
Bob loves talking,
Bill O'Brien loves talking about special teams.
How long is it?
29 seconds.
29?
Yeah, Colin Galaspeia's guy, he comes in here.
He works hard.
He knows he's on special teams
and that's his role on this team.
And he does a really good job for us
because special teams are important.
And it's something that gets overlooked
and we don't always talk about,
but Galaspia is one of our,
headhunters on special teams and we're really happy to have him coming in here and working
hard and really embracing being on special teams.
Yeah, he does a good job.
He takes a lot of pride in his role on special teams.
You know, that's the primary reason why he was drafted.
I mean, drafted like seventh round, like kind of drafted, I guess.
But he takes a lot of pride in that role.
You know, obviously he was the 12th man at A&M.
He's a Houston guy.
He's from Katie.
He loves it and he works real hard.
He made a really nice play on that very physical play and did a nice job on that play he made.
Oh, man.
I could have got, I didn't get any 12th man in there.
How did you fail to mention Katie and the 12th man?
I guess I screwed that one.
You also forgot to throw him under the bus for being a seventh round draft.
Yeah, what was that?
Kind of drafted.
He got drafted.
Yeah, either you're kind of drafted is when you are a street-free agent.
Yeah, like, what?
Come on, Bill.
All right.
Let's give you a little bit of a layup drill.
Okay.
Fuller's effect on the offense, 20.
24 seconds.
I mean, we love having Will Fuller when he's healthy and when he can play and get on the field.
He's a guy who can stretch the field.
A lot of people don't know.
He's actually a really good route runner as well.
So he's improving.
He's always getting better.
And he adds a dimension of the offense that we really love when he's healthy and on the field.
Yeah, I mean, Fuller, you know, anytime Will's available for us, you know, it means a lot to our offense.
I mean, Will's got great speed.
He's tough.
He runs really good routes.
He can play all different positions
He's great teammate
He cares about winning
And so anytime he's he's available
It does it
It helps our offense
God see and I knew he was going to get in subtle jabs
About him not always being available
He did that twice
You're having a great week
Time to it's time to challenge you a little bit
Uh oh
This one I'm very confused about it
I don't know if it's a slug or whatever
53.6 seconds
It just says on studying
film. Wow. Can you give us a little more of a hand on this, Nick? It's him discussing the importance of film study to being prepared.
Okay. I would say one of the things, one of the most important things that we do as head coaches is looking at film. And it's after games and that comes to advanced scouting and looking ahead is you look on the film because the film doesn't lie. And that's what we look at when we're trying to prepare for the
things and we're looking for things that we're doing wrong and we're looking for things that
other teams are doing that we can try to exploit. And it's also important to have a number of
guys looking at the film and noticing different things. So we got a good staff. We're always
breaking down film. We're always going over ideas. And it all starts with us looking at the film.
Yeah, I think the film, the film study is really important when it comes to preparation.
But you have to use it as a guide because in this league right now, when you go into these games,
what you see in the previous
three, four, five, six games,
you're going to see something different
in the game that you're playing that opponent.
But there may be some, let's just call it,
bread and butter type plays that may come up
from time to time. And if you've put
the time in and you've prepared
that you'd be in position to make a play,
but the call has to match up.
There's a lot of things that have to match up.
I think mostly it's, you know,
being as prepared as you can be.
And I'm just bored by the whole soundbite.
There's nothing that you could have possibly done.
He was just talking in circles.
All right.
Another layup.
James Winston 23 seconds.
James Winston's good player.
Number one overall pick.
Tough.
He's throwing touchdowns like crazy.
He can scan the field, makes reads.
He can also get on the move a little bit.
So, I mean, we got a big task ahead of us with James Winston
and going on the road and playing him because he's throwing touchdowns a lot.
He has been throwing some interceptions, but you look at the plays that he's able to make.
He's a great, he's a really good, really good quarterback.
Winston is a great player.
I mean, this guy was a number one draft pick.
I knew he was going to say that.
I think he's a Heisman trophy winner.
I mean, this guy has won national championship.
I mean, he's a phenomenal football player.
He's got a great arm.
He's got a lot of good players around him.
And so it's going to be a big, big challenge for us.
Last one.
I got that he was going to say number one pick.
I didn't get Heisman or national champion, unfortunately.
Yeah.
You got to go to the entire resume.
Right.
Last but not least, this is where you're really going to come home on this one.
This is another easy one.
41.9 seconds.
Bill O'Brien asked about the short week.
You know, they play Saturday at Tampa Bay.
Yeah, it's always a little more difficult with the compressed week.
You miss out a little bit of practice time.
The guys need to rest and recover, and you missed out a little bit on that.
So we got to get going here because right now it's it today is like our Tuesday.
So we got to get going.
We got to get going on film study and getting the game plan installed and getting guys rested up and practice.
So it's a little bit tougher with the short week.
But the other guys got to go through it too.
Yeah, it's definitely a quicker week.
It's definitely different than a Sunday week.
I think especially playing.
That was a very physical game yesterday.
So especially this late in the year, there's a lot of factors into it.
I think that we'll come in here tomorrow.
We'll watch a lot of film.
we'll jog through some things.
Wednesday, we'll see how they feel tomorrow,
and then we'll kind of judge it day by day.
But, you know, we've got to be ready to go quickly here
because we'll be on that plane headed for Tampa Bay
on Friday as soon as, you know, before you even know it.
So, you know, our guys will come in focus.
It's just a lot of fun when you're playing these games
at the end of the year with a lot on the line.
I think that's what it's all about.
So our guys will be ready to go.
And that, my friends, was another weekly rendition of this.
What you're doing on?
What you're doing about?
Coach O'Brien.
You did great this week.
Thank you, Matt.
I'm very, very proud of you.
I'm really happy that I nailed him saying number one pick
and also it was the other thing.
By the way, Bill does this and every coach does this.
When do you ever watch an NFL game that's not physical?
Have you ever watched the game between the Giants and the Raiders and it was a bunch of gazelles out there?
Like they were on ice skates.
You know, like on an ice stage, you know, pirouetting.
Yeah.
When is an NFL game not physical?
I have never watched, and I have watched football for 40 years of my life, of my 47 years.
I have never seen a non-physical football game.
That's true.
All right.
Lastly, but not leastly.
Is that a word?
Not really.
Okay.
Last but not least, Bill O'Brien gave us a little nugget about our favorite defensive
player towards the very end of his press
conference. I'm going to tell
you that
JJ
is working very, very
hard and he
has certainly made progress based
solely on his work ethic
and who he's working with in the
training room. And we'll
see how it goes.
We will discuss
if he was being coy
or flat out lying
or
a combination of both when it comes to maybe seeing JJ Watt come playing time.
Hey, it's Carmelo Anthony.
The Matt Thomas Show.
Continues.
Or your home of the Rockets.
Sports Talk, 790.
Yes.
It is 120 on the Matt Thomas show.
We are with you till 3 o'clock today.
713-212-5-790.
7-13-212-5-790.
It's how you reach our show.
If you'd like to visit with us on all things about the Texans victory, you know,
last Monday when we were recapping the Denver.
game when they lost.
We have people actually calling them
or upset.
You said you were done.
Yes.
And nothing that they could have done
yesterday was going to change your mind.
In the back of my mind, I think you still
feel the exact same way.
I'm going to stick to it.
I said, even if they went out,
I'm going to say, I'm going to say I don't trust
them.
I'll put it that way.
I don't, I'm not going to buy in.
Ronnie Harrison said the exact same thing
on the Sunday night TV show.
Yeah, I was actually just going to look up those quotes.
because I think I agree with exactly what he was saying there.
What I think, frankly, he's done is he's stealing your material.
You think he's listening to this show?
Well, you know, we had Rodney on one time, right?
Yeah, we've had him on before.
Do you remember what happened?
No, what happened?
I think Lance and I were working in the morning.
Oh, yes, yes, yes.
Y'all, you know, we're having him on.
He was supposed to be a weekly guest.
Weekly guest.
But that's when he had some kind of harassment issues?
No.
What was it?
He misspoke.
Oh.
He didn't even think Colin Kaepernick was even black.
He didn't know Colin Kaepernick was mixed, yes.
Correct.
And that was a whole thing.
So he stopped being a weekly guest.
Yeah.
And Bart Scott actually took his spot.
It was really good.
Rodney's like, I got to keep a low profile.
Like I appreciate you guys, but I'm not going to be a weekly guest anymore.
Because man, when we found out we were getting Rodney Harrison, we were very excited.
Right.
Yeah.
He's really good.
He's not afraid to pull any punches.
Yeah.
Here's Rodney Harrison on the Texans.
The problem with Houston for me is I don't trust them.
I don't know which Houston team I'm going to get.
I don't know if I'm going to get the one to beat the Patriots,
the one that lost to Denver or the one that showed up today.
If they can just be a little more consistent, I'll trust them.
But I don't trust them right now.
Preach on, preacher.
That's the way I feel.
And here's the problem.
I don't think beating the Buccaneers who are not going to the playoffs,
but might have a chance for in a winning season.
They're 7 and 7 with two games left.
That probably isn't going to go.
long way towards curing what Rodney
Harrison is saying.
And honestly, if the Texans win
the division and they can't move up any higher
the one I'm perceiving would be what
the four seed maybe?
The Texans?
Yeah, they can be any
they're going to, yeah, because you got. They need the chief
to lose to get into the three.
So let's presume that the chances that are not
great. Although, yeah, because Canada
City goes to Chicago next week.
So they're not going to lose that game. They could.
Possible. But the chances
are they're going to be the number four seats, then you really don't want to play to Sean Watson.
I'll throw something at you, Ross.
Okay.
This is a legitimate question.
If the Texans win the division next week and they go to 10 and 5, knowing that the three is going to take a lot of work and that Buffalo and Pittsburgh are going to beat each other up to win those wild card spots and not knowing really where they're going to end up.
Do you give Deshaun a week off?
Or do you think because of what Rodney Harrison just said and how inconsistent they are
and how schizophrenic they are that Deshaun Watson needs to get back out there
and continue to gain as much mojo for not only himself but his entire team over the final two weeks of the season?
Well, I'll give you two answers.
I think that the Bill O'Brien's philosophy and the way that he plays, the way that he coaches,
Deshawn Watson will play and play that whole game.
I personally, I mean...
Here's the problem.
There are so many moving parts here because I do believe Buffalo is going to be the best wildcard team.
And here I am presuming that Buffalo is not going to go to New England and win.
I'm going to just assume that Buffalo gets the final wallet card.
They would need to win that game and have the Patriots loose to the Dolphins, I think, right?
Probably.
My guess is New England who had the tiebreaker because of division record.
They would split the season series.
That would put them both at 4 and 1 in division record.
Yeah.
But then they would still...
What's AFC after that, right?
AFC conference record.
They're tied right now.
Bills could win the division.
Yeah, I don't think it's nearly as impossible as you think it is.
Now, granted, it would require Buffalo to go to New England and win that game next week.
Oh, gosh.
And then you would possibly host the Patriots again for a playoff game?
I know the answer to this question.
Yes, sir.
Everyone plays except for Will Fuller.
You just say of them?
Oh, you're saying just the opposite.
Okay, I got you.
I got you.
Yeah, you bubble wrap a little fuller and keep him on ice and let everyone else keep playing.
Especially if the Chiefs win this week, I say rest him the final week.
Everybody or just him?
Rest Deshawn Watson and most of your starters.
As much as you get, I would say maybe play him like a quarter or a half.
But let me argue that back to you that I think the difference between playing either Buffalo or the Pittsburgh, Tennessee,
whoever gets the wild card spot is a tremendous drop-up.
I think Buffalo is a very, very challenging lead wildcard team.
Okay, fine.
You convince me.
Just play it out.
Play it out.
There's too many scenarios.
Play it out.
You want everybody for,
I mean,
you don't want anybody get hurt,
but you can't play scared like that.
Anybody can,
what if they,
and if Deshawn Watson gets hurt in the first quarter of a playoff game?
Like,
that's possible.
Yeah.
The old,
I'm not going to put him out there because he's going to get hurt is one thing.
Where I think Pat Mahomes would like to have a week.
off because I still think maybe his ankle still isn't 100%.
Yeah.
Where you could clearly say there is no competitive advantage of moving the Chiefs out there
to play in a week 17 game.
So you do play Will Fuller?
No, I think Will Fuller has to keep playing.
He hadn't played enough.
We just keep him on ice.
He is important.
Play him a half.
Bubble wrap.
Let's get more DeAndre Carter.
Bubble wrapper on ice.
Kiki Kootie out there.
Was he even out there yesterday?
I don't remember Kiki Kuki Kootty's name being mentioned.
Me either.
How are they doing this?
I guess it's the tight ends
have been really good this year.
Yes.
Having Duke Johnson as a receiving threat has helped.
And DeAndre Hopkins, whenever you need him,
he's there for you to make the big catch.
That's the Texans' aerial attack in 2019.
I guess it doesn't really matter if you play Will Fuller or not.
Oh, oh, excuse me, I'm sorry.
We don't want to forget about Kenny Stills.
He's been a delightful picture.
That's true. Yeah, he had two touchdowns.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, but Will Fuller might break his collarbone putting his pants on.
That's enough.
Let's not bring nice.
I don't need, yeah.
No, I don't want you uttering anything in the rest of the show.
Even if I ask you a question, don't honor it.
Okay.
That makes my job easy.
No, I just said don't answer my questions.
713, 2, 1, 2, 5, 790.
7.
7.13, 2, 1, 2, 5, 79.
We love you.
Let's find out what happened around the rest of the NFL.
And then I got to play some audio from Jay Gruin that will be not in this segment.
because it's about a minute and a half.
You know the Raiders played their last game in Oakland yesterday?
Yes.
Do you want to guess how it turned out?
There was violence.
Yeah, there's a stunner.
That's a line drive on one hop.
This is George Springer.
Houston's home for Astros baseball.
This is Sports Talk 790.
You heard of the baseball there.
We don't want to wish the very best in recovery to our friend Steve Sparks,
who had a heart attack last week and is at home comfortably resting.
And in typical sparky fashion, was asked about the reason for his heart attack.
He said it was because of the amount of money that Garrett Cole got in his contract.
Good kid.
Good kid.
The buried, very, very best.
So if to Michelle, his wife, his kids, and do most importantly, Steve, hope you're feeling better.
Get you back on the radio here in the not-too-distant future.
Spark is being what?
Yeah, we need more of that in our life.
Yes, we need it for a long time.
Long, long, long time.
All right, NFL Rewind.
We can call it a recap.
Review, whatever you want to do it.
Ross runs down some of the best of week number 15 of the National Football League.
Okay.
Let's do that.
We do this every day at 1.30.
I know.
Well, I put the audio in, but I didn't talk to Nick about it, so it's my fault.
Well, this is going to be a train wreck thing.
You all stand by for a train wreck.
Yeah.
All right, Nick, you're just going to have to, uh,
Pick out what I put in there as we go along.
You're a professional.
You can figure it out.
Let's go ahead and start off with how about, you know what?
The Texans next opponent in the Buccaneers.
Takes the snap.
Gets protection throws a pass toward the end zone.
Into the con ball.
Touchdown Tampa Bay.
Bashad Perman's got the hat trick.
Buccaneers going to touchdown three today by Bershard Perman.
And with that catch, he goes over 100 yards for the first.
time in his career. How about that?
Is the play-by-play man for the Buccaneers
okay there? Okay, let me tell you a little bit
about him. His name is Gene Deckerhoff.
Okay. He is a Florida legend.
Uh-huh. He does Florida State too.
Oh, does he? And
we always get, usually get the opposing
team on, a broadcaster.
I love Gene.
Gene's just a little long-winded.
So it'd be one of those situations
where if we had him on the show, I asked him one
question, he might take the whole half hour.
Segment's over. So we're going to have to get somebody else.
But Gene is one of the nicest people on Earth and has been calling Florida State football for 35, 40 years.
And I think the Buccaneers were about 25 or 30.
So very talented.
All right.
But just a little long-winded.
So James Winston is continuing on this very unique ride.
There is Bill Simmons is wanting him to go for 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, which would be the first time any quarterback has ever done that.
But 458 yards, four touchdowns.
Chris Godwin had five catch-ins.
is 120 yon, 21 yards, but he's down with a hamstring injury.
So what do you think about the Buccaneers coming in town, Matt?
I told you they're kind of sneaky, 7-and-7.
The game's in Tampa, so actually the Texans are going there.
That's right.
But...
They've won four in a row?
Yeah, but we've heard that before with Tennessee.
Ain't worried about it.
Oh, you're not worried about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers?
Nope.
Okay.
I'm...
No, I'm not worried.
Okay, Matt is not worried.
That's fine.
Let's move it along.
How about we go a little bit?
North I-45, the Cowboys were hosting the Rams and they completely blew them out?
And off to Pollard, he breaks three tackles. He's down the left sideline to the 20 to the 10.
And Pollard's going to walk the dog.
How about Tony Pollard? Walk the dog?
Tony Pollard, 12 carries 131 yards. Ezekiel Elliott was great with a couple of touchdowns.
I did not see this one coming. The six and seven Dallas Cowboys, are we?
putting them in the, almost in the Texans category of inconsistency for them to just crush the
Rams.
Who do you trust for?
The way they did after losing three straight.
I guess the Texans, but I don't trust either of them.
But I mean, maybe is Jerry Jones right?
They're going to win out and go to the right off into the Super Bowl now?
No, they're not doing that, but they're going to win the NFC.
They're going to beat Philadelphia.
They're going to go to 9 and 7 on the season.
And Jerry's still going to fire at the end of the year, his beloved son.
I mean, they're like family members, right?
I mean, they're, there's, Jason Garrett is too tight with the head football coach.
Just sort of like Bill is too tight with, yeah, I'm in there.
Oh, are you okay, man?
Oh, God.
They're never going to go to the Super Bowl with Bill O'Brien.
Sorry, go ahead.
Well, you've got a big one coming up next week with the Cowboys.
They're going to play the Eagles.
Lance firing, and it is, call it.
Isn't it a touchdown?
Yes, it is.
And it is caught in the fourth and to the end zone to Greg Ward.
Speaking of teams that you don't know what to make of them,
how about the Eagles?
First of all,
getting down to the Redskins.
Then they come firing back,
scoring three touchdowns or scoring 20 points there in the fourth quarter.
Carson Wentz making a great throw to Miles Sanders there in the fourth quarter.
Also a great throw to Greg Ward Jr.
Matt,
You're always a cougar.
You're never a former cougar.
I'm sorry.
But what about the Eagles?
And what do you make of this one coming up next week?
Both teams are 7 and 7.
The Eagles and the Cowboys next week.
I don't care.
They're both won and done come playoff time.
It doesn't matter who wins the division because Dallas fans are going to be insufferable if they win because they're going to say,
how about them Cowboys?
By the way, I was at a restaurant yesterday.
I won't name which one it was that prides itself on multiple satellite televisions with NFL
ticket on.
Okay.
There must have been 30 televisions on in there.
29 of the 30 televisions were on the Dallas Cowboys game.
One hat on Cleveland, Arizona for some reason,
but the rest of them were all Cowboys and Rams.
And a blowout.
Cowboy fans in Houston just make me nausea.
They're the worst.
All right, let's move along.
How about a home game for this old man?
Throw the football, Eli, crossing patterns.
Pick off.
Baker's got it, the 25-9-line.
Comes around the quarter.
30, 35, 40, get to.
around Eli and he's pushed out about
midfield. Jerome Baker
with the interception
pushed out by Nate Solter.
The left tackle.
Eli, Eli wanted to
throw it out in the flat, but he threw it down
field blind, got picked off.
All is right in the world again.
Eli Manning is still starting for the New York
Giants as he got a game at home.
He had quite of emotional speech after the game,
did he not? Yes, and they lost, I mean,
I'm sorry, they won against the dolphins.
They were losing at halftime, but three,
interceptions for Eli Manning, man.
It's just like old times.
But they won.
Give the man some respect.
Should I?
Why?
Because he's one of the greatest two-time
Super Bowl MVP quarterback.
He is one of the worst,
he is the absolute worst
two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback.
Not going to the Hall of Fame.
Yeah, he's going to go.
How long are you going to get there?
I don't want to know how long.
I don't want him to go.
Well, John McLean put him in the Hall of Fame,
because you know if John McLean wants somebody in the Hall of Fame,
he'll get in the Hall of Fame.
He can bang the drum.
Like, as Andre Johnson,
going to get in because of John McLean? It's going to take a long time.
Eli Manning is going to make the Hall of Fame, and I think that's a travesty.
Not once, was he ever a top five quarterback? I don't know how many times he was a top
10 quarterback. Career 500 quarterback, too, right? Yes. Okay. I think he's under that now.
Well, he was under it last week, but he won this week. I think he's right at 500. I think he's at
500. He's not getting in. I think he will. He's in a Hall of Fair of Good. He's not even in the Hall of
All of Fair to me. He's not even in a Hall of Fame. When he gets in a Hall of Fame, I'll be eating food out of a
blunder.
I don't know why I have this vendetta against
Eli Manning, but...
You shouldn't, because he seems like an affable fellow.
I'm sure he's a very nice young man.
The whole Manning family is wonderful.
I'm sure he's a great man. I mean, yeah, but I mean...
All right, and that's the NFL
Reef. Yeah, that's your... All right, so
how do you think... I want you all to think about this question
for a second, and we're going to get back to some
Texans in the start of the
2 o'clock hour, but I want you to think about this
for a minute. If you're driving around town
right now, I want you to guess
how things turned out in
Oakland yesterday, when the Jacksonville Jaguars came from behind to defeat the Oakland
in the final game ever for the Raiders in Oakland.
Take just one wild guess.
At least they went out in true Raider fashion.
That's why, if you were to secede a city from the Union, it'd be Oakland, California.
You think so?
What about Detroit?
Doesn't Baja Mexico want them or something?
I don't know.
But really, what is there to like about Oakland?
The answer is absolutely nothing.
Hell, even the Golden State Warriors said we're getting the hell out of Oakland.
It's true.
The A's would die to go to San Jose right now.
The A's would die to play in the Niners Stadium and it's a football field.
The black hole is no more, at least for football.
143 of the Matt Thomas show.
If you want to chime in on the Texans victory,
because a lot of you have so far, and it's been really cool to get all the interaction from y'all.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-2-2.
2-12-5-7-9.
Hey, this is Joe Green.
Sports Talk 790 is your home for Houston Rockers' Basketball.
Time is 148. It is the Matt Thomas Show.
We are with you today until 3 o'clock.
Ross, what is believe it or not today coming up in an hour from now.
It's Lizzo.
No, no, no, no, no.
I was ready today.
He actually said Lizzo.
I know. I'm playing it anyway, because I was ready to play the crickets,
and you knew what, believe it or not was.
It's not fair.
It's not, yeah, that doesn't normally happen.
I was going to say, how many times I ask you at this time and you know the topic?
Well, you said you wanted it to be Lizzo because that's your new favorite.
It's my new bestie.
I knew you're going to say that.
When Lizzo does the first shot at a Rockets game coming up, she and I will take a picture with me.
Is she going to take one?
I'm going to invite her.
They invited her because the whole Lakers thing happened and then the Rockets tweeted
at her to like to invite her to dance with the power dancers.
Yeah, that's good.
I'm all in for all that.
Okay, you'll be here we have front row center.
Yeah.
Raiders give up 17 unanswered points.
in the fourth quarter to lose the Jaguars
and the final home game ever for the Raiders in Oakland.
That's a shame.
Let me just read the story and then we're going to let you hear from John Gruden.
What did John Gruden have to say about it?
Added security began to line the field
at the start of the fourth quarter.
They were ready for this.
That's so fun.
You know what? Know thyself.
At least the Raiders knew they were going to beef up security.
Yes.
Raiders were up 16 to 6.
they were in preparation for a rush of fans.
Well, happy fans going on the field at Oakland Coliseum is one thing,
grumpy fans of the other.
Fans, as soon as the Jacksonville and Gardner-Menschu rally began,
promptly began chucking garbage, including glass,
glass, snapple bottles, and half-full cans of beer onto the field.
Where did they get glass-snaple bottles from?
First of all, serving glass at a Raiders game, you kind of deserve this thing, right?
That's what I'm saying. Somebody had to have smuggled that in. There's no way they think it's a good idea to have shards of glass anywhere near Raiders game. Somebody's going to get shived.
Sadly, a woman standing in the front row bled sizably from her forehead. Apparently do have been hit by an errant throw and security engaged in a full-on brawl with another fan stationed near the goalpost.
media got ushered off the field for their own safety
and a few extra daring fans hopped the wall to take the field.
They were quickly handled by security.
None made it out of the end zone.
That's good by in Oakland.
They got that act together.
This is how the game ended in the final game
ever to be played at Oakland, Alameda County Coliseum.
Here's John Gruden talking about, well, he just says, I'm sorry.
I was like to say, I wish we could have sent the Raider fans off with a lot better
finished than that. I think most importantly, before we talk about the game, is I'd like to thank
the fans. I'd like to thank the City of Oakland for support narrators and being faithful in all
kinds of seasons. And I'll miss them. I love them. And I'm sorry about the outcome today,
but I think that's something that needs to be said, an exclamation pointed.
but really apologize that we weren't able to deliver a victory.
You know, it's not really the result today.
It's the results of the Raiders over the years.
It's the Oakland Raiders.
It's the appreciation, the loyalty that, you know,
these fans, I think, have had four of the Raiders,
and we're going to miss them.
You know, the relationship is hopefully never going to end,
but it was sad walking in here today.
It's going to be sad walking out of here for the last time,
And it's a lot to wrap your arms around.
But we love our fans.
We love the city of Oakland.
We thank them.
We'll certainly miss them.
The Raiders' second tour of duty in Oakland,
where they went to one Super Bowl with Gruden as a coach, correct?
Yeah.
Well, no.
When they went to the Super Bowl, wasn't it, Bill Callahan was a coach?
Oh.
Because Gruden had just left.
To go to Tampa Bay.
So basically.
Were they in the AFC championship?
The tuck rule game, Gruden was the coach.
Yeah.
Was that a championship game?
That was in New England for the championship, yeah, in the snow.
But largely, if you were to recap the second run of the writers in Oakland,
it's been a large amount of disappointment.
Would it be fair to say?
I mean, basically about 16, 17, 18 years of one Super Bowl run with Rich,
was Rich Gane in the quarterback?
Yes.
Tuck rule was divisional, apparently.
Was it?
Yeah.
Okay.
point is that franchise has just been doomed for a long period of time.
And Al Davis tried to get a stadium.
I mean, the Raiders and Texans played a game the weekend that Al Davis died.
And they came to Houston and won the game because I was in the Oakland locker.
Yeah, I remember that.
That was pretty damn intense.
Michael Huff, Longhorn, former Longhorn, great.
Michael Huff made a big play in that game, I believe.
You're the one that would remember such a thing.
But it's just one of those situations that a new scene.
a new city probably isn't the worst thing for them.
Here's the thing.
Now they're going to Las Vegas,
they should be able to have a brand new stadium
with all the bells and whistles.
They should be able to attract maybe even one or two
for agents they hadn't before.
We're going to find out if John Gruden can coach, right?
There's no more excuses, correct?
No, there hadn't been excuses at all.
Is his deal, was his deal guaranteed?
Al-a-gymbo?
What are they not guaranteed?
Ten years, 100 million?
Something nuts.
But yeah, he's, and he's, and he,
he got full control. I mean, even though that
Mike Mayack as a general manager,
I think everything does go through
John Gruden, for good or for bad.
So far, not for good.
How do you lose a lead like
that late of all teams, Jacksonville,
who clearly has melded in this season?
It's the Gardner-Minchu magic.
And the saddest part about this is now
I have to take them out of the Rod and 5, and we can't use
Jaguars lady anymore.
There's still a puncher's chance.
They can lose badly this week.
we did miss that we didn't have a nice Jaguar Lady
sound by that we played.
I don't know how many 15 or 20 times.
Question from Joan on Twitter.
Did I miss any talk of debatable and necessary roughness call on Scarlett,
which led the Tennessee score?
Wasn't that debatable? It was a horrible call.
It wasn't debatable, Joan.
They missed the call.
Yeah.
And that was a tough one.
The out-of-bounds play that backwards first down for Tennessee in closing minutes,
both of those couldn't be corrected at the same time.
Let me just tell you.
something. As much as I try to
not referee an umpire bash,
it's just too easy,
Ross, in 2019. They suck.
Every sports
officials at the end of the day are terrible.
You can't trust
them. You can't trust video review.
Have you noticed in the last few weeks of watching
NFL games, Ross, that teams are not
pulling out the flag of the challenge, pass, interference
calls because they know they're not going to
get overturned?
A rule that was put into place
to protect ineptive.
coaches are afraid to throw because they don't want to lose a timeout when it feels like it's very obvious that they did throw the flight, they should get a call in their direction.
We're going to get a call in a playoff game.
Let me ask you this.
And this is a terrible question now.
Replay system was put into play between the and before the Rams game against the Saints.
Do you think that outfield official would have overturned the call?
There's no guarantee that you will have.
Yeah, I've been saying that all year.
I cannot guarantee that would have been changed.
I can't.
God, it's so depressing.
That the world's, I mean, the sport has such amazing technology, all these different camera angles.
The biggest revenue league in the world.
Not even close.
And we still don't trust the human beings that are willing overturn it.
Here's the thing, Ross.
Then I've said multiple times.
Let's let a booth official make this call.
Take this out of the hands of the official downstairs.
I think that's really going to change?
Are we going to get a better percentage of overturns that should be?
Or do you think the guy upstairs is going to be afraid to embarrass the guys on the field
because they made the wrong call?
Bad, bad situation, only getting worse because of the fact that now we have replay
and the sport can't use it.
All right.
I'm going to ask the audience a very simple question, Nick Lowe.
Can they feel it?
Good job, Nick.
I'm going to ask you right now, Houston Texans fans at 713212-5-790.
Can you feel it?
Yes.
Is the Matt Thomas Show.
202 on Sports Talk 790, Ross.
I got one simple question for Houston, Texas, for sports RV, for Pro Nick Lowe.
You know what that question is?
What is it, Matt?
I don't know.
It comes in and out of the arms of the Titan and into the hands of merciless.
Houston touchdown.
Second touchdown catch of the court.
I've guessed it a little earlier.
It's Ominahoo.
Ominahoo.
I want to make sure as the time is out.
Should he have caught it?
Come on, Joe.
Like, you're a professional writer.
I don't know.
Like, the guy came in and hit him as the ball got there.
Sports RV.
You feel it?
It's about to happen.
A, F, C.
South
Champions
Four years
Again
Four years out of five
Brian
Four to six
right
Screw the ratio
up if it's four out of five
It is
I thought I've been saying that
So maybe I'm wrong
Nick
Can you feel it
Yeah it'd be four out of five
Fifteen
Sixteen they both
They won in nine and seven
Stop there's no crickets
17 they went four and twelve
People can feel it
Two one two
Seven ninety
Can you feel it?
Not really.
No.
I don't want the results of this.
This would be fun.
Oh, no, that's the Instapol music.
We went from the Jackson's to this.
All right, here's the question.
713-212-5-790.
It's time for an instipull.
The question is Ross.
Very simple.
Can you feel it?
When it comes to the Texans.
Yeah, I don't want to hear about other things you can feel.
No.
Can you feel it about the Texans?
713-212-5-790.
7-13.
I'm definitely afraid how this is going to turn.
You haven't noticed I'm how deathly afraid am of the Instapult in general?
Yes.
7-13-212-5-7-7.
90.
Line two,
can you feel it
about the Texans?
Absolutely not.
Okay.
That's one.
No vote?
It's a shame.
He couldn't even give us
a full throttle.
Yeah,
I mean,
no.
Absolutely not.
Line three,
can you feel
it about the Texans?
Yes or no.
Oh,
no.
Thanks.
Santa.
Does Santa just
chiming in?
Yes.
Santa's getting his
gifts for any.
He's still a chance
called the instapole.
That's ridiculous.
Line
Can you feel it about the Texans?
Ah, you know what? I'm stopping it right there.
You're going to say, I feel it down on my plums.
I think that's what you're going to say.
That's an eastbound and down quote.
That's a great show, but it's just trying to be careful for the LFC license.
Line five, can you feel it?
Yes or no.
No, I can't feel it.
Okay.
That's a no.
I'm going to the instant pole until I find somebody that can feel it.
Line four, can you feel it?
Can I feel it?
That's a no.
Line three, can you feel it?
Yeah, we can definitely feel it in Houston right now.
Like all those Titans fans wearing an oilless jersey, man, screw them and bud at them.
You know, I'm down with the Rock Boys, and we're taking it all the way to Super Bowl, baby.
We feel it in the next town, baby.
Close the ball off.
It took five people, six, but we found somebody that can feel it.
That was good.
That worked out good.
Ron and downtown at 2-Away to the Matt Thomas show.
Ron, how are you, friend?
I'm good.
I want to call.
answer your question by feeling it. Yes, sir. I haven't felt it since Buffalo came back and
after we were had by 35 points. Oh, no, you're not that 25-year-old guy, right? Are you? No way.
Let me tell you. Let me tell you. To say that Houston, Texas has never had a football team in the
Super Bowl is just mind-boggling. And it's because the ownership doesn't hold anybody accountable.
We don't even have a GM. And you've got to wonder, do they really care about winning? So I'm not
feeling it. I'm like, show me. Just show me. Don't make me feel it. Show me. And nobody's showing me.
One week they get Fs on everything. The next week they get A's. I'm just tired of it.
Show me. Nobody really believes they're doing anything this year.
Yeah. Thank you.
Thank you for the phone call, Ron. I get it.
Thanks, guys. Ross, talk about something. I'm going to go look at John McLean's report card
because he usually just crushes the team. Give them Fs and all that stuff. Gives them F minuses.
And then this week it'll be, let's see what he gives the grades.
He's gone.
I think I'm with the majority of the city of Houston.
I'm not necessarily feeling it on the Texans.
I said this after the Broncos game,
when you get down 38 to 3,
which how do you do this, by the way,
and the Broncos only scored three points this week at the Chiefs.
It was a snow game, but still,
the Chiefs can hold them to three points,
and they put up 38 on you.
I understand there's the win in the Patriots.
There's the win at the Chiefs.
There was this win at the Titans, all good wins.
But I just can't trust them.
Rodney Harrison, I cannot trust the Texans.
And I'll say that even if they win the next two weeks, I still can't trust them.
By the way, trying to find something on the Chronicle website is just a...
Yeah, you get a lot of pop-ups telling you sign in and for only like 30 cents a day.
You can do this and that.
Yeah, I'm not going to buy your website.
They're trying to make money, Matt.
Well, they're not going to get it from me.
Somebody's got to pay Brian T. Smith's exorbitant salary.
I do believe Brian T. is making too much money.
There's no question about that.
And John McLean.
Well, here's one.
Texans fans traveled to Nashville for Titans game.
Oh, geez.
Gross.
All the discounts you can win because the Texans won.
What do we get?
We get no more free slushies.
No, I'm not looking enough.
They scored two touchdowns.
We get some jack-in-a-box tacos.
By the way, we absolutely buried the lead from the game on Sunday.
How many false starts at Laramie Tonsel get?
Zero.
Good for him.
Zero.
How many did Will Fuller get?
But I thought he had a target on his back.
Will Fuller got one.
Now, he did get called for a hold.
I did Tenzel get a holding for that.
But yeah, I don't know what the scorecard is.
I can't look.
There's just too much stuff to look at here.
So, yeah, point being is that Laramie didn't got an, the Texans got a win.
Laramie Tenzel did not get to add to his league leading false start penalties.
Good for him.
I think he's, isn't he still like five or six ahead of the second place?
I think he was going into the game yesterday.
He was six higher than anybody.
All right, I want to try to find this scorecard because, you know, you can't review a game until you see somebody's report card of it.
Okay.
My report card, you ready for my report card quick.
Deshawn B, wide receivers, A, offensive line, B, running game, a, kicking game, A, defensive pass rush, not exist.
That's not trying to.
They've got a second late.
For the most part, not great.
C.
Secondary.
C.
Linebackers.
B.
Cunningham is solid.
Yeah.
Cunningham was good.
Eric Reed.
Chuck Benarick McKinney.
I'm not saying his name.
Benardrick.
Yeah, I'm not going to say it because I don't want you to make fun of me.
Oh, I love make it funny.
I know you do.
I'm not sure if you guys watch the film.
But yeah.
No.
So what am I going to do during the?
to break. Am I going to look at the story of Texans fans
traveled to Nashville for Titans
game? No. Or am I going to try to find the
John McLean scorecard? Great,
you know, report card.
Do what you want. Matt.
Doesn't matter. Yeah, it doesn't
matter. Are you okay?
Do you want me to throw a break here?
Bless you.
It's hard to
get over a cough.
All right. Matt is having a major
issues here on sports talk.
790.
I'm back.
I'm right.
Okay, he's back.
Bless you.
Thank you, Bill.
Oh, geez.
Do you think Bill's becoming a softer jetler coach?
I don't want to be in this room with all your germs flying around right now.
I cover my mouth.
Still.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Okay, that just zaps them out.
Well, it's better than most people don't cover their mouths.
That's true.
Good luck to Adam Clanton on that microphone.
Now we'll take a break.
2.13.
It's a Matt Thomas show's Sports Talk 790.
Five, four, three, at two.
Dave, Joe Green.
The Matt Thomas show continues.
Order nothing but...
On Sports Talk 790.
Nylon!
On your Rockies.
Time is 219.
It is the Matt Thomas show with Ross and Nick.
I'm Matt.
Rockets tonight against the San Antonio Spurs.
Excited about tonight's game?
I couldn't be more excited.
It's a grudge match.
The I-10 rivalry renewed.
Huge game tonight for the Houston Rockets
as they try to get revenge for the basket that wasn't.
the protest.
Oh, no, it was the basket.
It was definitely a basket.
No, I didn't want.
I didn't see on the scoreboard.
So let's go to that a little bit.
So, and look,
there are other people out there.
I won't mention her name,
has Ben DeBose,
who just crush officiating all the time.
Well, it's inconsistent and bad all the time.
Yeah, so instead of just accepting it like I do,
you know, you have to go run and tell the whole world
however your officials should be fired from their job,
which would then lead to zero officials.
Here's a thing, guys and gals.
it is absolutely an impossible chore to find people that get it right all the time.
What should be the – putting the human factor into it,
what percentage of NBA officials should get the calls right?
I feel like they get 90% of them right.
Probably.
Which is a very high percentage.
It's good.
If you are 90% at your job, you would be getting yearly raises.
You would be among your most productive employees at your said business.
and you would never lose your job because 90% is the low A,
but it leaves no room for the saying,
you know what, he's really good at what he does.
Unless you're like a prison guard,
and you're only keeping 90% of the prisoners locked up or something.
Yeah, granted, now if you're, let's say you're a pharmacist.
Yeah.
And you get 10% of the orders wrong?
That's probably not good.
Yeah, if you are a, I don't know, a surgeon.
Yeah.
You probably want to be at a higher than a 90% clip.
I'm not saying every job is 90%.
Airon pilot.
Oh, too soon.
How you doing, Matt?
Do you get any bad turbulence over the weekend?
Flight from Orlando was very bumping.
I'm sorry.
That's probably the reason why the Rockets lost.
We're in a bumpy flight.
Didn't get enough rest.
Okay, so most jobs, 90% will do you just fine.
Right.
And goes to fishing.
It's human.
I think the NBA gets it 90% of the right in the most difficult of all jobs.
So last Wednesday, the Rockets are playing the Cleveland Cavaliers.
And PJ Tucker, very first shot of the game, makes a three-point shot.
And then all of a sudden, it got dropped a point for a short time before it got eliminated altogether.
NBA during a timeout in a grand where I'm broadcasting from us in the second deck of the arena with the Cavaliers play.
So I'm not on the floor.
I don't hear the interaction with the officials.
I can listen to replay every once in a while.
But if I'm calling a game, I don't have a chance to listen what they're doing.
They took the three off the board, completely.
Yes.
Without much fanfare, just said, hey, we happen to see on replay that PJ's foot was on the sideline and we're taking the three points off.
Yep.
That's it.
And everyone was like, okay.
This is what we do.
This is.
We checked it out.
So you're saying that you went to an instant replay.
Yep.
And you saw that a man's foot was on the sideline.
And you said, that's not right.
We have to fix this.
We're going to take three points off the board for the rockets.
Okay.
It's totally fine.
You corrected an error.
Just like what they should have done in San Antonio a few weeks ago.
Yes.
There were seven and a half minutes left to go.
Wasn't like there was three seconds left.
Right.
They had multiple timeouts to say,
hey, excuse me,
don't mean to interrupt your preparation here, Popovich,
or Dan Tony, in the huddles.
But we noticed that that dunk that we called offensive interference on,
was really a real true dunk.
We need to give you two points.
And that's where,
if you are a non-officiating bitcher,
you become an officiating bitcher.
Lack of consistency there is mind-boggling.
And we talked about this when it was happening.
I mean, how do you go through
and you change stuff like the three-pointers?
You change stuff like rebounds.
You change all these things.
Somebody's foot's on the line.
And you have all of these people
with all these resources.
and the Seacoccus, New Jersey replay center where there's, it's all, there's like 20 TVs over there.
And officials, by the way, not old officials.
These are real officials that rotate going to the replay center just like it's another stop on the NBA tour.
You can't just put two points up and say, hey, you know what?
Ball went through.
Here's two points.
But you can take three points away or one point if the foot's on the line.
Doesn't make any sense.
And that's why people get grumpy at the league because there is some inconsistencies.
horrible.
Thanks NBA.
It's a great sport too.
I love it.
To watch these three pointers and these dunks
and these acrobatics and these
guys that are blocking shots,
it's a great sport.
Now, it's a top heavy league right now.
I mean, the West,
between the Lakers and the Clippers,
they are playing out of their minds.
Dallas has been a huge surprise.
In the east, it's frankly,
Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Boston,
and who else have that?
don't care. But it's a great sport. Lots of star power. It's not a league where it's, you know,
because remember when we, about 20 years ago when all, nobody can make a jump shot anymore?
It was, where's, where's that jump shot? Now, everybody's shooting them. Everybody is shooting
jump shots now. Now, maybe some people are shooting too many of them, but it's a league where
you have to have skills. When you're going from AAU to your one year in college to play in the NBA,
you have to be able to make a jump shot.
You can't be 7-2 and 240
and just think, I'm going to go to the NBA
and dunk.
These are the best players in the world.
NBA is a great product.
It's just got some issues.
It does.
And again, the officiating for me, for the most part,
you could go ask any coach in the NBA.
This bark they have during the game
is not nearly as boastful
and roaring as it is after games,
because they go, you know, look, there's a certain element of missing
shot, of missing calls, and more times than not, they get it right.
Yeah, you even had Mike D'Antony when the whole thing came down and they didn't
change, they didn't grant the replaying of the game to the Rockets,
but some referees were disciplined.
Dan Tony even said, I didn't want those guys disciplined because they just made a mistake.
Yeah.
He doesn't want anything to happen to them.
He just wants the call to be right.
Yep, that's right.
By the way, our buddy Bond just sent me a message.
You know, Lizzo and I have so much in common now?
How much?
U of H.
Yes.
Houston.
Yes.
Detroit.
Detroit.
And she went to school in A-Leaf in her early days like I did.
You went to school in A-Leaf?
I did.
I didn't know that.
I went to Boone Elementary for first and second grade.
Yeah.
This will be on the, believe it not, in 20 minutes.
She graduated from El Cic.
Really?
Now, when I was going to school,
Beyonce is from A-Leaf, too, right?
A-Leaf puts out Star Power.
Beyonce?
Yes.
Rizzo
Lizzo
Wrizo from Greece
She's not a first basement for the Cubs

Yeah pretty much
Pretty much
Sorry
All right 227 is
the time. It is the Matt Thomas show. Sports Talk 790.
Wait, she's Elsick as well.
You know when I was growing up that you, it was a lottery system of what high school you went to?
Because Elsic and I think Elsick and Hastings are right next to each other. We're very close.
Beyonce also went to HSPVA.
We have so many stars in this town. Wow. Lyle Lovett.
I didn't know that. Larry Gatlin. Zizi Top.
Okay.
Beyonce.
Mm-hmm. Little Kiki.
Little Kiki.
Lizzo.

When we come back
We're going to let you hear
the audio
that our friend
Is Jake Glazer a friend of the show?
I think he's ever been on the show.
No.
He's been...
We've had him on before, though.
But not on our show.
It's for some charity thing.
He was pumping.
Jay Glazer has a definitive evidence
of why the Patriots are cheaters.
228 on Sports Talk 790.
At least now we know that losing sucks.
And if anybody knows how much losing sucks,
it's Matt Thomas.
I'm outstanding.
This is Whitney Mercilus.
Back to the Matt Thomas show.
on Sports Talk 790.
Ross, this is the greatest eagles song ever made.
What?
Fight me.
I'm not going to fight you.
You're just wrong.
Nick?
I don't care.
Yeah.
Eagles are...
Are what?
I want to hear this.
They're okay.
They're just okay.
One of the greatest bands ever.
Really?
Ever.
This really gets your juices flowing right now.
No, but I don't need every song to be bouncing off the walls.
Like witchy woman and...
Good song.
Peaceful, easy feeling.
Love it.
Heartache tonight.
New kid in town.
Oh, new kid in town's horrible.
Don't tell me your hotel California guy.
Hotel California is their best song.
No, it's not the most recognizable song.
Not their best.
It's their best.
No.
That's an actually decent song.
At SportsMT.
Come on now, Eagle fans.
Give me your favorite Eagle song.
It's like soft country.
This is a country song.
This is just a classic.
It's comfortable.
Cold beer, hanging out with friends.
Great song.
Everybody sings together.
It's good.
Okay.
Just listen to the chorus real quick.
Sure, why not?
Just terrific.
Best of my love.
That's horrible.
Witchie Woman is not the greatest song of the Eagles.
Sorry.
It's cute.
Sunrise, horrible.
Great.
Fantastic.
Desperado.
Amazing.
Already gone.
We're already gone.
We're just rolling off the heads.
These are all bad.
Life in the fast lane?
Life in the fast lane's okay.
James Dean?
I don't remember that one.
I don't either.
All right, let's go.
You don't remember if you heard it.
The reason why we're playing this is because
Jay Glazer just exposed the
Patriots for being fraud that they are.
And my computer is frozen, so thus I will not be able to play it.
That would never happen up here, Matt.
God, it is.
I suppose I could help you out with that.
It's cut number 23.
This is Jay Glazer on the Fox pregame show.
yesterday, basically announcing what he heard, and then grabbing the video.
Here it is.
There's a confrontation there with the Bengals and that Patriots employee.
I want to show right now we have exclusive footage of this confrontation.
And you see right here, the Bengals, their security guys, actually filming what the Patriots
are filming.
And that was their sideline, their substitution.
There's actually eight minutes of this on the tape.
But this is where things take a turn for the Patriots.
And this is a piece you're filming.
on your advanced scout?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Come on, guys.
I don't see the advance scout in this footage.
No, it's not.
We were trying to get some field perspective.
My bad.
That's not the field.
Why you would think you could take that?
I didn't know.
I didn't know.
But I can delete this right here for you.
Damage is done, my friend.
Because we believe it.
There's no way I can get that for it in the back.
I'm being honest with you.
And I don't have a computer.
I'd like to even put it down with it.
Once this card, that's it.
Yeah, I don't see the advance scouting any of this video this shit.
So Bengal security immediately brought over NFL security,
and that was immediately given to the league office.
And as a result, yes, they're launching a big investigation.
this week of the league meetings, Commissioner Goodell and Troy Vincent, both addressed it.
Obviously, intent is huge.
Who did it go to?
And that's one of the things trying to figure out.
Was this all the way to Bill Belichick or did Bill Belichick have nothing to do with his hands washed?
But the investigation, I'm told, is not going to go on very long.
They want to act very swiftly here.
What does your gut tell you?
Is Bill Belichick aware, involved, or when he found out about this, he was.
completely startled by the revelations.
Blake tells me he's aware, and I don't know that he made the order, but I think he knows about it.
And I don't think he would, why do they need eight minutes?
This is what I keep going back to.
Why do they need eight minutes?
Because they're unfamiliar with what the Bengals do, new coach.
No, no, I'm saying, no, if we're to believe the Patriots story, that this is for a documentary,
this is for another.
Why do you need eight straight minutes of their sideline doing signals?
There's no way in the world we believe that the Patriots were on the up and up and
This is a straight steel.
The question is how far up the food chain does this go?
You know who I would like to know is involved in this?
A Nikki Casario.
You think Nicky's involved?
I don't know.
How about that guy?
He sounds panicked, right?
He sounds like he's a part of the mafia.
He's like, look, I can delete this for you right now.
Is Nick Casario the buffer then?
Between Belichick?
He had a lot of buffers.
Yeah.
If Nick Casario gets.
a massive raise this offseason, he absolutely was involved with this because he's the
fall guy or he went and found the fall guy.
I'm interested to see how this plays out.
So let's do this.
Let's say that Belichick knew nothing of it.
What's the appropriate punishment?
I will go with, they're going to be doctor fourth round pick for this.
Well, third hurts too much.
Yeah, fines are nothing.
This is a Patriots, one of the most successful franchise in sports.
What is the fine going to do?
The first Spygate got him docked a first rounder.
Yeah, but this is eight minutes.
That's what I'm saying.
This is eight minutes.
Although you may be of the belief of, didn't we punish you once already for this?
Repeat offender.
Yeah.
I'll go fourth round.
They're going to docked a fourth round pick because of this.
Pure guess on my part.
Any suspensions for anybody?
Now, let me ask you this.
Does that penalty change if Bill Belichick had intimate details of such event?
How do they prove that, though?
those guys
You know why?
I know that he probably already has plausible
deniability because he's already come out on radio shows
talking about how he didn't know anything about this
and he doesn't know anything about these people or what they're doing.
Because if he lied about that,
that it makes it ten times worse, right?
So I think, I mean, I think Bill Belichick is this long in the game
to know how to cover his own ass
and how to not have proof?
He's got somebody to fall on their sword.
It's got to be.
Let me ask you this.
Does Nikki Casario serve a suspension at all?
Is he the guy that's not?
going to take the fall. He's going to put this on Steve. Steve Belichick. Steve Belichick and that long
stringy hair. How old is Steve Belichick, Ross? I don't know. Is he like 30? Because I mean, when
you're the name Belichick, you're going to get women because you are who you are. But that hair is
going to cost you women. Mollets do cost. I don't know how many single women that listen to this show
right now are into Mullets. He's 32. And the hair is awful. Well, that's a view of porn of him
without the hair. Yeah, it's even worse.
Oh, by the way, speaking of hair,
I forgot to mention this real quick.
Guess what Newsday, one of the New York
New York newspapers, got a photo of today. What's that?
Garrett Cole getting out of a cab in New York
City. What's wrong with that?
Guess what he had on?
Long hair and a beard.
That was Photoshop.
Okay.
And you're supposed to be the official Photoshop
Google to show. I didn't get a magnifying glass out, but it looked like a
whoever did it, did a pretty solid job. They did a really
solid job. They fooled you. That was probably
an old picture of Garrett Cole
and they just put the Yankees
whatever it was.
He got out of the cab today. He's in full
beard. Yeah, I'm sure he doesn't
have to shave it until they report for spring training. That's
exactly right. He's going to keep that beard as long
as humanly possible
until he goes to Tampa, Florida
and they tell him to shave it and he's going to say absolutely
I'll be glad to because I'm
now New York Yankee making more money than God.
He'll be fine.
By way, Madison Bumgarner is now a
member of the Arizona Diamondbacks,
five years, $85 million,
and Corey Klober, a former multi-
two-time sign winner, if I'm not mistaken, right guys?
Yes.
Who had lots of problems last year with injuries
is now a Texas Ranger.
Seven starts last year before getting
the boot for the rest of the year.
Corey Klobber is now in the same division,
and so is Anthony Rendon.
Yeah.
Are we setting ourselves up for a 2020
of like closing our eyes and praying.
Astros still the best, right?
I think Yankees are odds on favorites as of this moment.
I don't care about Vegas now.
Okay.
I'm done with Vegas.
I'm done with Vegas telling me how I should predict things.
I love using Vegas for how I should predict things.
All right, believe it or not, the category today is all things about the Lizzo.
It's not the Lizzo.
Her name is just Lizzo.
What's her first name?
Maybe we'll find out next.
Tyler White here.
He's on the track.
Back to Matt Thomas.
And it is gone.
And sports talk 790.
Home of Astros baseball.
Okay.
All right.
Top of game for tomorrow.
Did I mention it on air?
I thought you did.
No, I didn't.
Go ahead and tell the honor.
I was just looking.
I was looking at Daniel House's Instagram and he follows my son.
Why does he do that?
I don't know because my son's cool, I guess.
I don't know.
Hey, Vernon Maxwell just put on Twitter a second ago.
You know Vernon's an underrated follow.
On Twitter?
Yeah.
So the last time we played the Spurs,
I accidentally offended a lot of people from San Antonio.
I would like to apologize to those people.
I had no idea you guys knew about Twitter.
If you check my MySpace page,
you will see I've never said anything bad about San Antonio,
heart emoji.
He's pretty good on Twitter.
He's really, really good.
His son's going to play at Georgia Tech, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's good. I love the flashback Friday segments. We had Rudy T this past Friday, which was excellent.
Joining other Georgia Tech grades like Jared Jack and John Barry.
I was going to say, which Barry was there? I think it was John Barry. Price was a Georgia Tech graduate.
Okay. Chris Bosch. Georgia Tech said some players.
No, you don't want, you're going to be mad at yourself after you say that because I think there's quite a few Georgia Tech guys in the league, even to this day.
Yeah.
And the audience doesn't care, so don't look it up.
The point being is that...
Yeah, it's...
How do we get the Georgia Tech from here?
You're talking about Vernon Maxwell's son.
Oh, yeah, he's wanting Georgia Tech.
Okay.
On the show tomorrow, we will have a visit with Aaron Reese.
Texas have to move everything up a day
because they're going to start practicing
with a big Saturday tilt with Tampa Bay.
Now I'm going to ask you again,
can you feel it?
No.
You don't feel any better today than you did before?
I feel 2% better.
What if they finish off the year with three wins
to get to that number four seed.
I told you if they went out, I'm still waiting.
And I don't want to be that guy, but I just can't trust them.
Have you already prepared for the Monday after the Texans lose that wildcard Saturday, early start game?
Have you already got your message already prepared, locked and loaded?
Yeah, I got it saved in drafts.
They are what we thought they were with Denny Green.
Well, I mean, a Denny Green gift.
Here's how it's going to work for me.
I went with the hottest take of either direction.
If I've said for multiple times that Texans are never going to get to the Super Bowl with Bill O'Brien's a coach, if they get there, it's an entire day of people calling me and say, you know what the hell you're talking about.
Dang, I know.
That's why I do want you to be wrong.
Am I going to be wrong?
Probably not.
I mean, no.
Thanks, Bill.
Now, forgetting about this year, how about the year 2021?
Will I be wrong about that?
Well, when were the Texans ever be considered a legitimate, they're the best team?
Because we didn't think Baltimore would be it this year.
If I was New England, that was it.
We thought New England and Kansas City we're going to play the AFC South Championship,
which very much, they could.
But I haven't seen any slippage in Baltimore in months.
Yeah, Baltimore's, as of right now, I'm picking a Super Bowl winner and picking Baltimore.
So in 2021, you in for it?
No.
Is Lamar Jackson getting hurt that year?
2022?
22?
I mean, you got Lamar Jackson.
24.
we can't do that.
It's going to take a new coach for us to legitimately.
And by way, draft picks and the super free agent signings.
Are Lamar Jackson and Pat Mahomes going anywhere in the next 10 years?
Five minutes left to go on the show.
What should we do?
We should play America's fastest growing sports game show.
We simply called it.
Believe it or not.
And here's how it works.
You'll call 713-212-5-790.
713-212-1-2-5-7-90.
Today's edition of Believe it or Not is brought to you by Woodhouse Day.
Spaspern out your gift car for the gift of relaxation this holiday season.
Go to Houston at Woodhouse Spas.com.
Category today is all things about Lizzo.
Read your statement about Lizzo.
Statements completely utterly accurate.
You'll say this.
Believe it.
If it's erroneous, full of bunk and made up, you will say this.
To believe it or not, it's all things about Lizzo win your prize.
Ross, what's the prize?
Matt, I've got a pair of tickets to Battleground 2K-19 at the Toyota Center.
December 18th, starting at 4.30 p.m.
It's a college basketball triple header featuring teams from Baylor, UTSA,
Oregon State, Utah State, UT Martin, and South Florida,
with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the athletes against abuse initiative.
And the reason we're going with Lizzo today is because she was named the Time Magazine's
entertainment in the year.
When's last time we read an episode of Time Magazine?
It's probably the last time I was in the dentist's office.
Yeah, or the pediatricians.
Right.
Let's play.
Tyler on 790.
