Much larger than life.
Yeah.
Lunch timers is the Matt Thomas show.
12 on what's happening, lunch timers.
Good afternoon to you and welcome to a Wednesday edition of the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790 alongside our producer, Nick Lowe.
My co-host, my cohort, Ross Vittoriel.
I'm Matt Thomas
And I must be honest with you
I was suffering with a little bit
Look I'm not watching ESPN as much as I used to
For obvious reasons
I'm sure ESPN's not particularly happy about that
But I put it on at least for a couple of hours a day
I was going through some massive
Tom Brady fatigue
I mean I know he's the goat Ross
Yeah
I know that his leaving
After 20 years New England is a huge deal
I'm not trying to downplay that.
The comment that he's the goat has been getting some backlash in the last few days on Twitter.
From who, idiots?
Some people saying that, you know, one system, one quarterback, one coach, that guys who have succeeded in multiple places, maybe if you're starting a team, you would choose someone else.
Okay, that's just wrong.
But I understand.
Everybody's people are open to their opinion.
They are, but sometimes the opinions are wrong.
If I said I'm starting my team with Peyton Manning over Tom Brady, would you say I'm the craziest person alive?
I wouldn't take you the crazy person alive
I just think it would be a wrong opinion
And I'm look, I grew up knowing
In my mind that Joe Montana was the goat
That's true Joe Montana's a good pick
Yeah I guess he succeeded in multiple places as well
He was okay in Kansas City
Negrannie beat the Oilers
And they made the playoffs a couple times
And yeah he and 97 year old
My Knees don't work Marcus Allen
Came up in here and whipped up on the oilers
Yeah too soon
Way too soon on that
Sorry man
Point being is I really don't think it's up for conjecture.
But that's just me.
I'm just saying it's been a little bit of a Twitter debate the last couple days.
Well, there's a lot of things on Twitter that are debating that are stupid.
That's true.
All right.
So I was honestly going through Tom Brady fatigue.
Yeah.
So I was kind of, I put on the get up show because they move around the topics.
It's actually of all the shows in the morning, that's probably the best one.
There is opinion.
There is news.
There's information.
I was looking for updates in the NBA because I was looking for updates in the NBA because
I'm frankly, I miss the NBA tremendously for multiple reasons.
So instead, it was Michael Irvin was on the show on the get-up show today.
And they were talking about time brand.
I'm like, oh, man, I don't think I can do that.
I'm going to go take a shower, get ready to go to work, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
And then this happened.
And it did.
Jesus, can we ever get this computers right?
I mean, God, bless it.
I tried to pull it out of him like, what happened?
What happened here, man?
There's no way they give away one of the best receivers in the NFL for a ham sandwich like they did.
And he kept the high road on it.
He said, Michael, you know, I'm just happy about where I'm going.
And that's it.
He left it there.
But, of course, you know, I just, I couldn't rest my mind on it.
I called him again 24 hours later, like late yesterday.
And then he was willing to talk more.
And I said, tell me what happened in Houston.
And he went into it.
He told me, he said, Michael, it was.
a bit of a power struggle there because Bill O'Brien thought,
Coach O'Brien thought he had too much influence over the locker room.
He called DeAndre Hopkins in a meeting to talk about this and to kind of just hash it out.
In that meeting, he started the meeting with telling DeAndre Hopkins this,
that blew my mind when DeAndre told me this.
He said, he told DeAndre Hopkins, he said, hey, the last time I had to have a meeting like this,
it was with Aaron Hernandez.
I was like, what?
He put in Aaron Hernandez in this meeting.
He said, yes, he did.
He said, Michael, that blew my mind that he would even bring that up.
I've never been in any trouble.
I don't know why would he equate me with Aaron Hernandez.
And from there, the meeting just deteriorated.
You know, he got into talking about DeAndre Hopkins,
because DeAndre Hopkins has a few kids and from different women.
And he said, you know, he told DeAndre he doesn't like that he has.
his baby mammas around sometimes.
And from that, I think the relationship just went bad.
And thus, we got a trade of D'Andre Hopkins from Houston for basically, like I said earlier,
a ham sandwich all because of that relationship.
Damn, I hate being treated for a ham sandwich.
Now, if it's a boar's head, that might be a pretty tasty sandwich.
Maybe with some provolone.
Yeah, a little thin slice of mayo.
A horse radish mustard.
All right.
So.
Now I'm hungry.
Yeah.
Well, there's quite a few layers of that.
A lot of layers.
First and foremost, and by the way, you are welcome to join in on this at 713-212-5-790.
7-1-3-212-5-790.
First question that everyone's asking, and I think it was a very first thing that I was asked when I got to the office today.
Ross and I kind of briefly discussed before we started the show.
How many people, DeAndre Hawkins is murdered?
That wasn't it, but that's not a bad guess.
You're on segment suspension.
Want to get that out of the way?
Yeah, I figured you did.
Do you believe Michael Arvin?
Michael's been an interesting media member.
Explain.
I always, and it's not just me,
but there are a lot of people that have kind of said,
you know, he runs a little half-cocked on the show.
Some of his comments are maybe a little more personal
than they are about analytics and analysis.
That's true.
He roots hard for the Cowboys.
He's an open rooter for the Cowboys.
you're supposed to be on the NFL network trying to at least give some impartiality on some things.
But there's going to, I mean, he and Dion are kind of in that same category to me.
Some things they say, yeah, it kind of sticks.
It makes sense because you know what?
They're Hall of Famers.
They've played the game at the highest level and they've been the best at the highest level.
So you have to give them a heavy dose of credibility in comes to that.
But it just feels like some things are maybe not, maybe spur of the moment, not always well thought.
I don't know what it is.
How about this?
How about I put him on the level of maybe like a shack or somebody on an NBA on TNT.
Okay.
Are you going to run to Shaq for deep in-depth basketball analysis?
Right.
Or is he going to say funny stuff and say bombastic things?
Or bombastic being the grid of turn.
And be funny and have a good time and be entertaining.
That's what Michael Irvin's on TV for.
He's not here to be leaking conversations that he had with a professional football player.
He's not running into why the certain T-Burbanes.
team didn't go Tampa to and they were supposed to.
But that's okay. I don't need a lot of that.
There are a lot of X's and O's guys out there.
TV's entertainment. You got to have everything.
And Michael Irvin obviously entertains.
I watched that live as it happened before it became, you know, everybody started retweeting and putting
things out there. I totally believe him.
I totally 100% believe that DeAndre Hopkins told Michael Irvin those things.
And I'll give you a variety of reasons why.
number one, look who he's talking about, a man that has had repeated problems with many members of his team and his organization over the last five years.
This is not, this is not DeAndre Hopkins talking about Andy Reid.
You get what I'm saying on this?
There is a pattern to the Bill O'Brien behavior since he's become the head football coach and now general manager of this team.
If DeAndre Hopkins was talking about his coach in the way that Bruce Ariens,
and the name was Bruce Ariens, you would do a double take.
You would do a double take if it was Andy Reed.
You would do a double take if it was, who else would be someone that would be considered a super, super players coach?
Did you say Pete Carroll?
Pete Carroll, great example as well.
So that's the first reason why I believe it.
The second is he was pretty vivid.
Yeah, I have no reason to call into question what Michael Irvin said.
There's no reason for him to make it up. There's no reason for him to lie.
And what he said on its face, I believe.
But there's two sides to every story.
And that's what we have to figure out.
I think first thing we have to figure out, after we get past it, I believe him, you believe him.
I think most everybody believes him. Michael Irvin doesn't have any reason to make this up.
And DeAndre Hopkins in his tweet, which we will get to, he didn't deny it.
So then the next question for me is, was Michael Irvin supposed to say what he said?
And our previous show in the trenches believes that he, that DeAndre gave him the blessing to say that.
I think the tweet gives me a little evidence to believe that maybe that wasn't supposed to be put out in public.
I'm with you, but then it kind of, I mean, you have to because, so a previous show when Matt says that,
he's talking about Indy Kalu and Sean Jones,
two former, you know,
decade long NFL veterans who
probably at least
Sean or Indy know at least a little
bit Michael Irvin. Right. So I feel like
you have to take that with
more weight. When they
say that there's no way
it's impossible for Michael Irvin
to have put this out without DeAndre Hopkins
giving the okay. I have to
listen to them when they say that. Yeah, because DeAndre
knows that Michael Irvin's on the NFL network.
Right. He's very, he does lots of radio
interviews and TV shows.
I don't know if Michael Irvin said to him, point blank, can I say this on the air?
That happens sometimes.
I've interviewed, I shouldn't say interviewed.
I've talked with a lot of people in the world of sports.
And I've said, can I say this?
Yeah.
But that's a little bit of, I wouldn't say training on my part, but it's just because I've done
this for a long time.
Michael is still very much.
He's been on, I mean, he's been on the NFL network for a while.
And he probably has conversations with people all the time.
But does he ever, does he ever go to that?
can I say this on air? I would say yes. I would say because you know why? Because during his career,
they probably had reporters say that to him. So he knows about that type of protocol. Yeah,
that's right. So let's presume that he did ask. So that's the case. Then we can't go to the,
well, D'Andre is then mad because he gave up some secrets that weren't supposed to be out there.
That's the thing. See, there's a number of ways to look at this. If Michael Lervin did ask
and then DeAndre Hopkins did say yes,
then this is a ploy by DeAndre Hopkins
to where he can go through an intermediary.
Remember, there's always a reason we talk about this.
There's always a reason something gets leaked.
So the reason for this to get leaked
would be that DeAndre Hopkins leaks this out to Michael Irvin,
makes Bill O'Brien look bad,
makes himself look okay,
and then he can come out and say,
you know what, hey guys,
I just want to move on from this.
and act like he had nothing to do with it.
So either DeAndre Hopkins was a willing participant in this
or DeAndre Hopkins got railroaded.
It's one or the other.
Does it have to be one of the other?
I think so.
Either he had permission to say what he said or he didn't.
But I think, Michael Irvin I'm talking about.
But my guess is, yeah, Michael Irvin asked these questions.
Either the conversation was private or or Michael Irvin said,
can I say this and he didn't.
And Deionne Hopkins gave you okay.
But I don't think Deandre Hopkins has a grudge.
I think Dianre Hopkins is happy that he's an Arizona Cardinal.
I think he's probably happy that he's no longer a Houston Texan.
You don't think there would be a little bit of bitterness.
And if everything's coming out about this deal and DeAndre Hopkins,
some people are speculating that he was the bad guy and he wanted his deal ripped up,
that he might not leak something out a little bit like this
and try to make himself look better in a better light?
I could see that.
I don't know. I'm speculating.
Yeah, these are all speculations.
Because we don't know.
More potential speculation between down 3 o'clock today.
Speculations 790.
on the Matt Thomas show. We're just going to take one two-minute stretch and figure out 80 ways of the reasons why.
713-212-5-790. Could DeAndre have put this out there to make him look like the really, really good guys, compared to the regular good guy that he was over the last couple days?
7-13-212-5-7-90.
This is Craig Ackerman.
The rockets are certainly popping the polypropylene.
I know Matt Thomas all too well.
Hey, by the way, this is my new catchphrase.
Nothing but nylon.
And I hope I can say nothing but nylon between now and the end of the year.
I had this sneaking suspicion.
You guys found out yesterday that four Nets players, including Kevin Durant, was tested for the COVID.
Ross, you know, the Lakers are getting tested today.
Pray that none of them have it.
Because I feel like if you get multiple players from the Lakers that got it.
What if LeBron James has coronavirus?
The late that Adam Silver is going to just shut the league down.
Well, I saw that they had pictures of Kevin Durant hanging out with LeBron recently.
That's right.
You're on segment suspension.
What?
At least he said something truthful this time and not depraved.
Just say us.
First of all, we want a large prayer.
Say a little prayer for the Brown.
No, we want a large prayer for all of America, not to get anybody to get this anymore.
When I wake up.
Okay.
More people are going to get it, Matt.
I know.
But just help me out with this.
but then say a smaller prayer
for anybody in the Lakers organization
that travels.
What if it's like Kyle Kuzma, that's fine.
No, no, no, no.
No, the views expressed by Ross are by Ross and not this radio.
What is like Ray John Rondo?
No, no, no, no, no.
As long as it's not Alex Caruso.
No.
Carmelo Anthony?
No, he's with the Blazers.
No.
But is he too old?
Is he old enough to where it might actually kill him?
No, he's not that old.
He's not in his 70s.
There's not 73-year-olds.
playing in the NBA
Nick.
713-212-5-790.
So just say if you're a fan of the NBA,
every Laker that gets tested,
Ross, is going to be another nail in the NBA season coffin.
Okay.
You think so?
But then they'll just quarantine them.
Why is any Laker more valuable than Rudy Gaubert?
I mean, it would just be anybody.
What it would do is it would show that one team
is hanging around another team is just spreading this thing.
That's what it would show.
Okay.
Yes, man, it all starts with that damn Rudy Gaubert.
Thanks.
Well, maybe.
Or the kid who he signed their autograph might have given it to him.
Or somebody from France a can.
Thanks, kid.
Or one of the Nets.
Yeah, we don't know.
713-21257.9.
Last thing before we start taking your phone calls.
So we've already said the subject matter, Bill O'Brien, you could fully conceive
him doing this, right?
Yes.
Number two, Michael Irvin is savvy enough to not put out something.
out there in the public without the endorsement of the player, right?
We're assuming that?
We would assume that because he had a lengthy playing career where there were probably times
where stuff happened and he would have to give the okay, whether or not it would, to the
Dallas Morning News or whoever, who's up there or TV.
And so you would figure he's aware of that type of protocol, even though he's a player
and he's talking to a fellow player.
And number three.
And he's been with NFL Network for a while, right?
I don't remember him going off half-cock for stuff he wasn't supposed to.
to say. No, like, oh, I didn't mean to say that out loud. I snitched. Number three, the content
was vivid. It wasn't spoken in generalities. He brought up Aaron Hernandez's name. There is a
relationship with Bill O'Brien with Aaron Hernandez. And all by the way, on the whole statement as
to what his problems were, coaches sometimes get bothered by guys that have big locker room
presence. That's not out of the ordinary. Another thing that's on the ordinary that may not be
popular for some is that you can call them baby mamas.
You can call them hangers on.
You can call them friends, buddies.
You can even get even, you know, maybe ill-informed slang if you want to.
Contingent groupies, whatever you want to call them.
There is a group of individuals male and female that hang around athletes.
Groupies.
And coaches don't like that sometimes.
And if those baby mamas, using his terminology, not mine, took away from DeAndre at practice in the building
Energy Stadium, then Bill O'Brien is well within his right to say these things.
I wouldn't have said it, but maybe he would have been able to say, you know, hey, please keep
your business at business and your home stuff at home. And maybe that's been a problem in the
past. We don't know this. Can we just hear the Michael Irvin thing again?
You want to? Yeah. I've heard it twice now.
Because I'm trying to think of, because DeAnder Hopkins is being blown out of proportion.
is it possible
that like I was kind of talking with you before the show Matt
like we have a we have a fun relationship
we make fun of each other we take shots all that type of stuff
would it be like what could is it possible that Bill O'Brien was
you know DeAndre Hopkins walked in Bill O'Brien's like
last time I had a meeting like this was there in Hernandez
like in a joking tone
no here's what he didn't mean anything but or he's joking with somebody
or sometimes you have relationships where you joke with somebody
and they don't think it's funny because you're not that close
no here's what here's what happened he
probably matter-factly said this.
I don't think he's tying
the life of Aaron Hernandez to the life
of DeAndre Hopkins. That I don't believe
Bill avoided it. He's not equating. But what I'm
saying is that he could have very easily
said, hey Ross,
like for instance, I've had in my broadcast
career probably 10 producers, maybe
12, give or take.
And maybe some of them were excellent, some of them were
awful. And I could say
Ross, the last time or Nick, last time had a conversation
with a producer of mine was
XYZ person who eventually had to fire.
So my point is that he probably just did it matter-factly, but I'm sorry, Bill.
Aaron Hernandez carries one of the worst connotations in recent sports history.
And when someone comes to me and says, the last time I'm at a conversation about how a player
conducts his business in my offices is a guy that's a double murderer, that's going to be a little
bit of a, are you putting me in that category kind of thing?
That's exactly what that is.
Well, I'm wondering if he said it straight face or he said it with a chuckle.
Doesn't matter.
Because we don't know.
I think it does matter.
No, I don't think you bring up Aaron Hernandez's name, period.
If he's just joking.
No, no, no.
There's no joking.
He's employee.
We don't know that.
Of course there is.
No, but there's no, there's nothing that would be joking about that.
There's nothing about Aaron Hernandez in a, when you bring in a player to sit down in a meeting
and you shut the door, you don't, there's nothing chuckling about it.
There's Bill O'Brien clearly had a problem with the way DeAndrey Hopkins carried that lock.
room. I'm telling you we don't know that. We don't know the tone of the meeting. It doesn't
matter. We don't know the tone of it. We don't. It doesn't matter, though. You don't bring up
Aaron Hernandez to a guy that has been a choir boy in the NFL. You just don't. There are just
going to be taboo names, taboo phrases. And if you're in, if DeAndre Hopkins gets called to the
principal's office and the principal shuts the door and says, we need to have a conversation about
how you're conducting your business. And you open up and you sit down and you say, hey,
Matt, what's going on?
Well, the last time I had a conversation like this with someone was Aaron Hernandez.
That's a damn, that's a shell shock.
I don't care if it's a joke or not.
It's inappropriate, wrong, and bad.
It's a terrible message.
I think we don't know that.
I think we don't know the relationship.
We don't know the tone of the meeting.
We don't know how it happened.
We don't know the relationship.
We don't know the relationship.
If Michael Irvin directly asked DeAndre Hopkins what happened,
and that is what DeAndre Hopkins cited,
I think we can safely assume that it wasn't a lighthearted meeting.
That's exactly right.
I'm pissed off.
You're going to Aaron Hernandez on me?
I understand that, but I'm saying maybe DeAndre,
maybe, first of all,
DeAndre is saying it's getting blown out of proportion.
That's covering it up.
That's not, that's, that's, that's, that's,
I got to do the little damage control because I don't want to be the super bad.
He's doing damage control?
A little bit.
We don't know that either.
This is just speculation 790 right now.
I'm going to tell you right now.
Okay.
There's a lot of things you have said that have been speculative,
that it makes a lot of sense.
I don't think, and even in a,
joking hearty har-har or a serious-ass manner that you pull down your number one player you bring
them to your office you shut the door and say the last time had a meeting like this was with erin
hernandez that's a slap in the face that's exactly what that is that's a you're you're putting me
in that category we've had co-workers of this station who are who completely damaged the image and
reputation of this station if brian ericson called me into his office and shut the door and said
last time had a meeting like this it was with this person
person, I'd be offended by it.
Absolutely 100%
offended by it. Here's the comments
again, we go to your phone calls next.
And Greenie, you know, it stunned me, Graney, and
I'm going to tell you guys, both of you guys, you know,
I got on the phone with him right after
I heard about this trade, and I
tried to pull it out of him like, what happened?
What happened here, man? There's
no way they give away one of the best
receivers in the NFL for a ham
sandwich like they did. And he
kept the high road on it. He said,
Michael, you know, I'm just happy about
where I'm going, and that's it. He left it there. But of course, you know, I just, I couldn't rest

I was like, what?
He put in Aaron Hernandez in this meeting.
He said, yes, he did.
He said, Michael, that blew my mind that he would even bring that up.
I've never been in any trouble.
I don't know why would he equate me with Aaron Hernandez.

And from that, I think the relationship just went bad.
And thus, we got a trade of DeAndre Hopkins from,
from Houston for basically, like I said earlier, a ham sandwich, all because of that relationship.
Yeah, I don't think he saw a chuckle at all on that. I'm just trying to figure this out because
I just can't believe that I keep, we keep getting evidence that Bill O'Brien doesn't know what he's doing,
and I can't believe that he would do this. Oh, I do. I'm just in disbelief. No, this, this to me is yet
another reason why. Bill, there's no way. No, Cal's like, so here's what He-Ha did.
Cal went to Bill and said, Bill, did you say these things? Bill said no, and Cal said, that's fine.
This is All-Pro running back, Ricky Williams. Stay connected to Houston Sports, even when you're not in town.
Listen to Sports Talk 790 on the IHeart Radio app.
We got some breaking news here on 790, not involving a local team, but a team that is in the AFC South.
Nick Foles on the move again, he is going to the Chicago.
Chicago Bears for a compensatory fourth round pick.
Is that right?
Yes, a fourth round pick for Nick Foles.
There you go.
Edwarder, ESPN.
Edward?
He's back in the game?
Temperate.
Texan source.
Okay.
That's why you temper it.
DeAndre Hopkins trade was a result of him seeking $18 to $20 million per year
with team recognizing deals for Deshawn Watson, Laramie Tunsell,
needed soon.
Relationship between head coach GM Bill O'Brien and Hopkins was on an issue or a factor.
Cardinals offer, quote, best by far.
Lies! Lies!
When did Bill O'Brien and Ed Wander get tight?
When did Edwardd become a show for the Texans?
When did Edward and Cal get tight?
Do you understand that Cardinals offer best by far?
Do you know what?
Minnesota says, hold my beer.
That's the thing, right?
We've been saying this.
We've been consistent on this.
can accept, okay, relationship was
fractured, or he's saying it wasn't,
or he needed a deal
and he wanted to be paid like one of the top receivers
in the league and they couldn't afford it. Got it, got it, got it,
got it. Then how come Stefan
Diggs is going for as much as he did?
How come O'Dell Beckham, Jr.
is going for as much as he did? How come
Amari Cooper is netting a first round pick?
How come Brandon Cooks twice
in the span of two years?
From the Saints to the Patriots,
Patriots gave up a first round pick, and then
the Rams gave up a first round pick to the
Patriots.
Twice he gets a first round pick in two years.
And you can't get one for DeAndre Hopkins.
I mean,
Brandon Cooks is a nice player.
He's not in DeAndre Hopkins class or tier.
No,
do I believe that DeAndre Hopkins want him or more money?
Yes.
Do I believe that Texans are within their right to say,
no,
you've got three years left.
And we need to pay Tunsel and Watson and we're going to try to that.
Let's figure out where we are after that.
And we'll address this maybe with a year left in your contract,
maybe even two years.
But tell,
Seriously, Ed, don't put that out there.
Has Bill O'Brien's mouthpiece weighed in yet?
Who's that?
Ian Rappaport.
I mean, come on.
Come on.
I need to hear from Bill O'Brien's mouthpiece.
Well, at least Ed Warder said Texan source.
Yeah.
Which is probably, was Ian too busy and Bill O'Brien had to go down the pegging order and Ted Edward?
Let me see.
He's scrolling through his phone.
The ganguly?
No, she does a Lakers now.
Can't call her.
Oh, well, I don't know how that radio.
Speaking of fractured relationships.
Yeah, why don't you call one of the local people that actually cover your team?
I mean, Ed orders Dallas Cowboys every week.
What would you have you?
We have you text, Bill O'Brien, Maddie.
I love his number.
Let's go to Jeremy in spring at 1238 on 790.
Hi, Jeremy.
Jeremy!
Jay Dog.
Jaylicious.
All right.
Jeremy thinks.
Jay Amazing.
If you guys want to come in and have a better phone line than Jeremy,
713, 212, 5790.
I don't believe this under any circumstance.
I don't.
Come on, Ed.
I mean, maybe it was the best deal available of teams he called.
Like we had to call yesterday and said he went alphabetical.
It said Arizona, sure.
Texans source.
Who is this Texan?
Is Jack Easter be tight with Ed Wurter?
Well, it doesn't matter.
It's somebody from the, it's somebody that is speaking completely.
hey Ed, look, we're getting a tongue lashing today by Michael Irvin.
Can you help me out a little bit on this?
Did Ed used to follow the Patriots?
No, Ed was a Cowboys guy, right?
For years?
Large, long, long, long, time beat writer than making them move to television as a lot of those
beatwriters do, because...
So maybe Cal?
Would he have a relationship with Cow McNair for some reason?
Because he was Cowboys and like a Jerry Jones type of guy.
Did Michael Thomas say something on Twitter?
Somebody just said, because I put...
the tweet out there about I don't believe is to you
and David Neeland says
did you see Michael Thomas's tweaking you check
out see what that is? Can't guard Mike let's see what he has
to say
um
he retweeted the Bleacher Report
tweet
about what Bill O'Brien
said
oh here we go
oh
Michael Thomas says damn sounds a little
race and then
cuts the word in half
you could have said racing
he could have said raciest
never mind hope Deshawn don't sign back
not worth it
mm hmm
go ahead and you gotta tell me out I'm missing some pieces
maybe I need to look at it
it's he's basically saying he's saying racist
but he stops the word in the middle of the word
oh damn sounds a little racie
never mind I hope Deshawn doesn't sign back
not worth it don't sign back not worth it okay
yeah that is so basically he's calling
Bill O'Brien racist
I'm calling Bill O'Brien incompetent
See, I mean, this whole argument that I got into you with this second segment, I just, I just can't believe that Bill O'Brien would be that.
Yes, you can.
Why?
How?
He's just not a, he's not an idiot.
How is he this tone deaf?
He's been around the NFL for however, how long has he been around the NFL?
Decade.
I am frankly insulted.
And I very rarely get insulted.
The Cardinals offer was quote best by far.
By far.
That's just a lie.
Stop lying.
No, it can't.
be a lie, as in
they didn't do their due diligence. Like, they called
a couple of teams and it was best by far, and they didn't
do good negotiating. Well, obviously, the Minnesota
Vikings did their due diligence. Well, they got a
that's what I'm saying. Hall in draft picks for Stefan Dix.
Well, do you think that was the original offer
for the Buffalo Bills? From the Buffalo Bills? Of course
not. They probably negotiated. That's what I'm saying. Pick up a phone or
emailing and texting. What Edward said could be true.
If I'm a bad negotiator
and I have three offers on the table, and I say I took the best one
far. That's true. It's not a false statement, but it's also not true. It also doesn't
mean that somebody who was a better negotiator couldn't have gotten a better deal. So with the weak
negotiating powers of Bill O'Brien, maybe that was the best deal he could have gotten because he doesn't
know what he's doing. That makes me wonder what happened with the Laramie Tunzel trade. Did
Bill O'Brien go in there with the offer immediately? I'll get two first rounders.
And you ready for this? Here's another, here's a load of crap part two. Relationship between
DeHondre Hopkins and Bill O'Brien had no factor.
It's so funny, this comes out.
The morning of Michael Urban talking about how bad their relationship is.
Ross, connect the dots on this.
This is spin.
You think this is MSNBC and Fox News are jealous of this spin.
This is spin.
And Ed Warder's like, I'll take a quote.
Oh, man.
Let me tell you something.
If anybody in Texanville that listens to the show once a close.
call me. Tell me what's going on over there. And don't give me this awful spin.
Edward, you know what? Edward got laid off a year ago. Maybe he feels like this only way he gets
to keep his job. I don't know. Is he back or no? He's back. Okay, good. I mean, he's a good
reporter. I've done another against him. And I will say he did clarify by saying,
Texan source. And, yeah, Edward isn't making this up. Edward is being the mouthpiece for somebody
within the Texans organization.
If any self-respecting
reporter gets something from a credible
Texan source, they're going to tweet this out.
So it's not on Ed.
It's on whoever's leaking this.
Like I said in the first time,
there's always a reason to leak.
In reality, it's this.
If somebody, if Jackie should be called me
and said, Matt, here's what I'm telling you.
I probably would do the same thing, right?
Of course.
Yeah, so it's really not about Ed.
It's just I don't believe what Ed was given.
What is being told.
It's not on Diamond against it.
It's just, I just.
he said this is what a Texan
source said. He didn't offer an opinion. He's saying
this is what a Texan source said. Or here
is what really happened.
According to Texans. Right. Yeah.
Texan source.
Hey, it's Eric Gordon. Gordon for three
in the lead. Matt Thomas is my favorite voice in Houston.
EG for three.
You're listening to the flagship. Sports Talk
790. Home of the Rockets.
You know what?
I don't think I'm going to let you play those anymore.
It's making me sad.
Well, we've got another one in the archives that's going to be former Houston athlete.
We have the DJ Reader one.
Oh, too serious.
He adds to the list.
He's a bingle?
Yeah, sign a deal with a deal.
By the way, did you see the...
A huge deal with the bing.
He's the highest paid defensive attack on the league now.
The tweets from ex-Texans players apparently are all backing up DeAndre Hapkins, apparently.
What do we got?
Look up Jalen Strong.
I think his is probably the best one.
Okay.
By the way, so you played two-liners so far today.
Former Texan's great Jalen Strong.
You played two liners so far today.
One was me saying nothing but nylon and one was EG for three.
I'm not going to be able to say those to at least mid-Jude.
Maybe.
Sorry, Matt.
There's some more good ones coming up.
I'm sure.
You're just trying to twist the knife, aren't you?
I get you how you are.
If you were to make a guess if there's an NBA season today,
I would lean towards it being no right now.
No NBA season at all?
Especially if this Laker report comes out with several players.
Because the percentage of people that are NBA players that are getting at are probably higher than the general public, right?
We've had, what, four nets, two jazz at six.
Christian Ward of the Pistons makes seven.
Do a quick math, Ross, because you're a math guy.
There are 450 players in the league.
Yes.
Seven players have already gotten it.
Okay.
That we know of.
All right.
You want a percentage on that?
So what's 10% would be 45?
Well, so it's about a little under 2% like 1.5%.
2% would be 9.
Yeah.
What is that?
What is the percentage of America?
Is it what a...
Wait, no.
That's less.
If 7 out of 4.50, 10% would be 45.
Yeah, 2% would be 9, right?
Yeah.
So it's a little less than 2%.
Oh, so Jalen's strong.
Go ahead.
With some strong words for Bill O'Brien.
Let's temper who Jalen Strong was.
He was mid-around Rick Smith bust.
He is at, well, he has Strizzie as his name.
Anyways, he quote tweets the Bleacher Report,
about DeAndre Hopkins and saying,
comparing Aaron Hernandez, et cetera.
This is what he says.
This is who Bill O'Brien is.
You all thought it was my fault.
I wasn't seeing the field.
The man simply doesn't like me
because I was a product of my environment.
Performance means nothing.
He wasted my first three years.
ultimately ruining my NFL career,
I never knew how to kiss ass.
And then he tweets like some kind of CBD oil product
in response to that once it blew up.
I liked Jalen.
I hope that he had a chance because he came on this.
Do you remember he came on the show about five or six years ago?
This is like a dispensary or something.
Well,
he's got a man's got earning income somehow.
Yeah, that's fine.
It's an honest living these days.
He didn't have any NFL career after the Texans, right?
I don't think so.
I will say this.
He might be right on a lot of things, but I'm not going to blame him
and Bill O'Brien and the Texans for ruining a guy's career.
He was briefly with the Jaguars and on the practice squad of the Browns, and that was it.
So it wasn't like just the Texans thought he was terrible.
Not terrible, I shouldn't say that.
He was not worthy of being on the roster.
He was arrested in 2016 for marijuana possession.
That's right.
I forgot about that.
Yeah, he was in Arizona.
Remember that?
Oh, that's right.
He was Jalen Strong.
Yeah.
And then now he's selling weed legally.
So congratulations to him.
Let me tell you something.
Took a little bit of his money he made with his third round salary and developed a little industry.
Good for him.
Got to respect that.
Let's go to Jack on the southwest side at 1252.
Hi, Jack.
Hey, how you doing?
I am T.
Look, just want to give you a brief word.
You said that there was a problem that D.Hop was probably having too much influence in the locker room.
I believe you're right.
More specifically, he had too much influence with Deshaun.
that's where the problem was.
That's it.
If it hadn't been for the relationship between Deshaun and Dihop,
no problem.
Bill had to break that up.
Now the question is how Deshaun is going to respond to that
clear violation of clear relationship.
That's all I got.
If you got any thoughts, let me know.
All right.
Appreciate the phone call.
I got news for you, Houston,
and all sports fans listening to us,
baby moms
are not just with DeAndre Hopkins.
They're with many, many
super successful athletes,
including Tom Brady.
He's got multiple baby mamas.
I'm just telling you,
and this is before I travel with the Rockets,
I'm not saying the Rockets had this issue.
I'm just saying that in the NBA world
that I travel in,
baby mamas are everywhere.
Baby mamas are in baseball.
Baby mamas are in football.
It's everywhere.
Now, again, if these baby mamas, using his terminology, not mine, are infiltrating
NRG Stadium causing DeAndre Hopkins to mispractice or have problems, then Bill O'Brien is well
within his right to say, please, keep the home business out of here.
But, and here's where I cannot tell you the tone of the conversation on that.
because we do not know
if he's just
against having
women come to the office
different ones,
then that's just really
that's Bill O'Brien's problem.
That's not DeHonra Hopkins.
DeAndre Hopkins can have his sex
as many women as he wants to
and have his many kids.
But if those women
are causing issues,
then Bill O'Brien
can step in and say
you're bringing your
domestic issues to my office
and that can't happen.
That's within the realm of possibility.
That's not a conjecture.
That's only what Bill O'Brien and DeAndre Hopkins know.
That's not what you and I could potentially guess.
There's just so many things we don't know.
Because, I mean, Bill O'Brien has been around the NFL.
He's been around college football.
He started at Georgia Check graduate assistant in 1995.
So that is, what, 25 years?
He's been around college and NFL football.
This can't be the first time that he's ever seen anybody with multiple baby moms.
So that's what I'm wondering.
he that tone deaf or we just don't know or I mean how much of this is on him or how much was the
relationship or something that were fractured? I don't, we don't know. And I keep trying to give him
the benefit of the doubt and I keep losing with Bill O'Brien. It's just, can he be this,
this bad, this, this, I keep saying tone deaf. Yes. I think that's the perfect way to put it.
Unless somebody completely poof me otherwise, what I'm, if I hear an argument between athlete and coach,
general manager and coach being
Bill Brown. I'm going to take the other side.
Because the evidence proves
we have time and again. He's just a tyrant.
How does this happen?
How does he become
basically the owner and operator
of the Houston Texans?
Ask Cal.
It's crazy.
713-212-5-790.
7-1-2-1-2-5-7-90.
Second hour of the show coming up in a matter of moments.
Tom Brady is a non-official.
become a Tampa Bay Buccaneer yet.
Okay.
Do you think there's anything to that, or do you think it's just, you know what,
I've got to just cross the eyes and, or across the T's and dot the eyes.
And dot your lowercase J's.
That's true.
People forget about those lowercase Js.
I know.
And how Vegas loves the Buccaneers now.
The Buccaneers are expected to have a better season than the Patriots.
I saw, yeah, they have better Super Bowl odds.
And if you're the Patriots, do you go kick the tires on a Cam Newton trade?
Because apparently the Panthers told Cam Newton, go find a trade partner.
We won't do it. You do it.
And then they signed Teddy Bridgewater.
Yeah.
Which means Cam Newton's days as a Panther are over with.
And do the Patriots go out and find somebody?
Or do they trust second year, one game under his belt, Jared Stinnom?
Do we know how many years are left on Cam Newton's contract?
I'm looking it up.
Whatever it is, Ross, it can't be cheap.
about 20. I think it's around 20 million a year. I'm trying to find it. How much of that is guaranteed?
How much of it does the Panthers have to take a hold of it if they want to cutting him?
It feels like to me that the reason why they've asked for a trade is because
cutting him would be very, very cost prohibitive to them. It would cost him a lot of den caps days.
Yeah, he's making 20 million a year and this is the last year of his deal.
Okay.
Why wouldn't that team take a chance on a one year $20 million cam new?
Yeah, especially if you saw yesterday, Philip Rivers signs a one deal for $25 million.
I guess you wouldn't want to give something up.
But you wouldn't have to give up much if they're going to cut him anyways.
Let me tell you something.
These days, for quarterbacks, for him coming off major injury, he's what a fourth-round pick you give up in return?
Maybe.
Is Cam Newton worth a third?
If you're paying that much money for a guy that has had significant injuries the last couple of years, we'll get to that.
More of you on the DeAndre Hopkins Michael Irvin revelation.
It was huge.
I couldn't believe as I was having.
a cup of coffee this morning when that happened about 840 I think it was local time.
I was texting everybody I could find. You've got to hear this. I cannot believe that
not only Michael Orbit is saying this. And then the guy next to him on the ESPN show, I don't know
who it was, the analyst. He's like, I'm dumbfounded. I don't know what to say. That's what
everybody around the league is saying today. That a coach would be that tone deaf. To bring up
Aaron Hernandez's name for a guy that has never had one ounce of trouble in the NFL, maybe he's
sleeps around. Maybe he's got a lot of kids with a lot of moms. Guess what? So does a lot of America.
And it's not just DeAndre Hopkins.
Is the Matt Thomas show.
103 on Sports Talk 790. It is the Matt Thomas show hour. Number two, we go to three o'clock today.
Believe it or not today at 252. All things about Ed Warder. No, I'm just kidding.
What is the category?
We got time to figure it out.
You don't do your best work until 2.30 anymore.
Have we ever done a Michael Irvin, believe it or not?
Maybe, maybe not.
It feels like it's been a while.
We did you believe it out solely on his arrests, right?
Oh, too soon.
Okay, so when I put the tweet out a little bit ago, I don't believe this to you.
I believe that Edward was given this information.
I want to make sure I'm very clear when I say this.
Ed Warder, somebody called Edwarder because, you know what they did today, Ross?
They've been watching Michael Irvin and ESPN and the rest of us completely destroy the Texans organization.
for yet another reason.
So what does Jackie used to be
or Bill O'Brien
or one of their football operations guys do?
Hey, go call Edwarder.
Let's calm this down a little bit.
I'm actually shocked that this didn't come from Ian Rapidport
because normally that's Bill O'Brien's guy.
Maybe Ian's in quarantine.
He's got like three phones on him.
He's tweeting.
Here is the Edgar order quote.
Again, everybody knows exactly what happened
with Michael Irvin by now this morning.
DeAndrey Hopkins trade was a result of him
seeking $18 to $20 million per year
with team recognizing deals for Deshaun Watson and Laramie
Tunsell needed soon.
Ross, before going any further,
how much money was DeAndre Hopkins scheduled to make them each of the next three seasons?
I think 16, somewhere around that neighborhood?
So you're telling me that the best receiver in the game,
who has shown no signs of slowing down,
is looking for an extra $2 or $3 million per year.
Basically.
I'm going to make sure, yeah, average annual was 16.2.
Okay, so let's say they gave him the $20 million per year.
That's $3.5 million per year for each of the next three seasons.
Well, the cap hit was only going to be about 13, actually.
But the average of his contract was 16.2.
So he wants $20 million per year.
Yeah.
That's less than $10 million to keep your future Hall of Fame wide receiver happy.
And it's also less than what Julio Jones, I believe, is average annual value is 22.
Yeah.
But...
Oh, here comes the butt. Go ahead.
You got to pay everybody.
You can't pay everybody.
But $10 million over three years is nothing in NFL circles.
It's just not.
I get it.
Okay, so let's put that out there.
If you're paying Deshawn 30, I mean, what do they have, 50 in cap space-ish?
Yeah.
Flush.
Cash flush.
I mean, 30 plus of that's probably going to have to go to Deshawn Watson when it's all said and done.
Okay.
20-ish to Laramie Tunsell.
I mean, they're going to have anything if they pay both of them?
That I don't know.
Yeah.
But also they have blankets to cover them.
They have franchise tags they can use on these people.
And if you're going to cut cost, you don't do it with your best player.
I'm telling you this.
Great NFL teams that have super wide receivers that you're telling me to keep them happy for three additional years,
can renegotiate a contract, which would be fair market value,
and it would cost you less than $10 million over the three years to satisfy.
I'm okay with prioritizing quarterback and left tackle over wide receiver.
That actually doesn't bother me.
Like I've always said, what bothers me is what the compensation was laughable.
Compensation was laughable.
So let's continue on with that.
Okay, so let's say that again, they just said, look, we just can't do this.
Relationship between head coach GM, Bill O'Brien, and Hopkins was not an issue or a factor.
That's just not telling the truth.
Right.
That you could, I bet you if I went and JJ,
Watt and I went and get beverages, and I put some truth serum in there.
He would spill the beans.
Bill's not, I mean, JJ's not going to do that because JJ is a Bill O'Brien guy.
Frankly, probably DeShalln Watson's a Bill O'Brien guy.
But there's enough guys that have been able to say some things because either they're not
there anymore or retrated or released or cut or got sideways of Bill O'Brien.
They're like, the guy's awful.
And a lot of players have gone to these two media members that have covered the team.
You mean to tell me if I got John McLean, Brian T. Smith, Aaron Reese, and Aaron Wilson together, and said, hey, do the players respect and appreciate O'Brien?
Is there any problem in there?
They'd spill their guts, but some of them just can't because they're covering the team on a day-to-day basis.
And I'm not blaming them for that.
But this notion of that no one could be buying this.
And the problem is, Edward has a huge reach.
And there might be people in America that go on like, yeah, maybe if Edward says,
it must be the truth. At least Ed put the word Texan source in front of it.
And then he goes on to say Cardinals offer best by far. Well, if you only take one offer, I guess it was the best offer.
But Cardinals offer best by far is a false statement because again, later in the day, Stefan Diggs goes to the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota's got a boatload of Bill's draft picks.
in which, you know what, as much as I want to say this, as much as it hurts to have DeAndre Hopkins gone, Ross, and gang and Houston, if the Texans got a first round pick in this year's draft and some twos and some fours and some sixes and whatever to replenish, we could live with this.
I would feel better about it for sure.
And clearly, if they had gotten to the B on the list and called the Buffalo Bills, they would have given them the same deal for DeAndre Hopkins for sure.
And you'd have gotten more.
Who gets more in a trade in theory?
DeAndre Hopkins or Stefan Diggs.
It's not even a question.
Right.
What does Stefan Diggs make this year?
I'm going to look.
It's also possible that Bill didn't want,
that AFC teams are completely off the table.
We could say that.
Diggs is making about 11.5.
His cap number is 12 million this year next,
which is about what Deander Hopkins cap numbers are.
12, 1⁄2.13 and a half.
It's not even a question of the fact that
digs is making significantly less. If digs are making $6 million a year, then you know what? Okay.
You don't, you know, you can give up a little bit more because you're not paying for a whole lot.
But you're paying about the same. It's just false. And again, Edward has got to do his job.
Edward gets a phone call and says Easterby on the text. Hey, call me. I want to tell you some stuff.
He's going to type it. And Edward's position is not to give opinions. Edwardar is a reporter for the NFL.
ESPN. And if a Texan source, whomever that may be, calls him and says, I'm going to spoon feed you this
bunch of crap, you're going to put it out there. But I'm not going to believe it. Right. That's why you take
Ian Rappaport stuff from the Texans with a grain of salt, and clearly you should take Edwarders
with a grain of salt from here I am. Texan source. Wonder who it is. It's probably Bill or Cal, I think.
Does Cal have any sources?
I feel like for whatever reason he would be boys with Edwarder.
That just seems like in my mind that makes sense.
Connect the dots on that because I can't find it.
Edward was tight with Jerry Jones.
Bob McNair was tight with Jerry Jones.
You connected it.
There you go.
Jerry calls Cowan and says, hey, Edwarder snooping around on this deal.
You might want to call him back.
There you go.
Okay.
I can favor that.
Lisa on 790.
I'm coming up, Lisa.
Yes, you are, Lisa.
Hey, guys.
How are you?
Wonderful.
Well, I could probably spend all day on the phone with you guys talking about the Texans organization and poor mismanagement and mediocre coaching.
I've been a season ticket holder for several years.
So I, you know, have been through the ups and downs with the organization.
And, you know, this was the final straw for me.
We canceled our season tickets, and the only thing that I can encourage everybody to do is if they want to see a change and they want to see this guy gone,
the only thing that they can do is cancel their tickets, quit buying merchandise, quit buying tickets to the games because money talks.
And that's the only thing that's going to get ownership's attention is as horrific as what happened is and how appalled we all.
are and upset and disappointed and frustrated, the only thing that's going to matter is if we just
pull together as a fan base and show how upset we are and quit supporting the organization.
And when they start feeling it in their pocketbook, maybe that's what will get their attention.
That's the only thing I can think of at this point because he's just going to continue to,
he's got too much power and he's going to continue to do, you know, make the decisions.
and that's the only thing I can think of.
And so I started it.
We started it by canceling our season tickets,
and maybe others that are just as upset will follow.
So that's all I got to get back.
Yeah, let me ask you real quick before I let you run.
When you told the Texans, did you officially do it yet,
or you have not have done it yet?
Well, you have to cancel.
Like, you cancel online, and you, like, send them an email and say you're canceling,
you're not renewing.
And they give you, it's like a drop-down,
menu of reasons that you're canceling, you know, like your financial status change or you
weren't going to the games or whatever.
And so there was not an opportunity to put a comment on there, but I'm going to call today
and I'm going to call the season ticket hold.
Lisa, we lost you.
Thank you for the phone call.
And Lisa, if you're listening to us, you still can on the radio.
Do me a favor.
I want to know how the texts are handling this.
I'm sure the season ticket sales rep.
I mean, he's going to do his job.
He's going to say, hey, we hate to hear this.
What can we do to keep you?
Fire Bill O'Brien.
Maybe that's their answer.
I mean, I don't envision them lowering prices because you don't need to lower prices
because you've got a season waiting list of 10,000 plus ready to scoop those tickets up.
This is Deepless of Tackle, DJ Reader.
The Matt Thomas show continues on Sports Talk 790.
Real Texans talk here.
These kids are listening to show because they're at home, extended spring break.
And they just wanted me to say, they wanted me to ask me if I ever call.
called Bill O'Brien Butchen.
I've never done that before.
That's not very nice.
There's a lot of things I've called him,
but Budchin's not one of them.
You don't want to focus on one feature of somebody.
Let me tell you something.
I am an Adonis in many respects,
but I'm not perfect.
In what respects?
How many?
Name one.
I'm dashing.
I'm fit, for the most part.
Not muscular, but fit.
I got a good dad bod.
Okay.
What else?
Relatively good health.
Let's move on.
What else?
You're coughing all over the place yesterday.
We're all concerned.
No, you're not concerned.
My 5 o'clock shadow makes me look rugged and interesting.
Disheveled.
The only thing I don't have going for me is my legs are pasty white,
no matter if it's summertime or the middle of winter.
Other than that, you're just damn near perfect, Matt.
Again, but just the butt chin thing, I mean, it is what it is.
I mean, 10-year-olds can do that, 11-year-olds, 15-year-olds?
40-year-olds?
I'm just going to let that slide.
Let's just move on.
Okay, but the point being,
there's no point.
We were talking about Bill O'Brien,
and we're not just going to call him but chin.
That's not very nice.
No, you can call him but chin, but chin.
And maybe on the playground, he got called that or something.
Or when does, does a, can you have a, what year,
what age does the chin dimple form?
Probably at birth, right?
Yeah, did he just have that?
Yeah, he had six years old had that thing.
Babies with chin.
If I called him butt chin to his face,
Oh, my gosh, you're right.
This is disturbing.
What?
Yeah, you babies have chin dimples.
I guess it's when you're in birth.
Yeah, what if I called him but chin right now, here's what he would say back to me.
That's not very nice, Bill.
Well, that's why I wouldn't call him that.
Yeah.
122 on the Matt Thomas show.
We have suspension of fun today.
It's 150.
Really?
I'm still upset about my loss yesterday.
It's the high-log game today.
You will not be involved in this.
Our listeners will.
I want a rematch, Matt.
You get it next week.
I'm clamming for my rematch.
And I want better questions, and I want it Jeopardy style where I can answer first.
Why do you want better questions?
The questions were fine.
Questions were terrible, number one.
No, the other guy got four to five, right.
You got three out of five, right.
Take the L and go on.
Take that L.
I'm pissed.
All right.
So we're going to play the high-low game.
I think only got two.
That's right.
We're going to play high-low at $1.50 as part of suspension of fun.
Let's go to Keith and West Houston at 123 on 790-ha.
Hey, Keith.
Hey, Matt, how are you today?
Good, friend.
Thank you for calling.
Good.
Hey, apologies to Nick, because I told him I was a 14-year season ticket holder because my math is not very good.
It's actually 16-year season ticket holder.
Wow.
And with the PSLs and the tickets, I mean, I can't take the hit that Lisa is going to take by losing hers.
However, I am going to consider just buying them and not going at all.
I did call the Texans after I heard the news and spoke with one of the customer service ladies.
I'm not going to use her name.
But I asked her on the phone, do they drug test Bill O'Brien?
Because this guy, there's no logical reason other than his ego that you let go of your best number one offensive player.
I mean, it just makes no sense.
And obviously, the girl's not going to say anything to throw the organization under the bus,
but she said she was taking notes.
And I also asked her, is Cal McNair ever going to speak to the fan base ever?
Because as far as I can remember, he hasn't even spoken to us since he took over.
The two times I remember, wanted the Houston little sports get together downtown, whatever that thing is called, where he was, where his dad was being honored.
But that had nothing to do with the team.
And then he had a prepared statement that he went on the Texans radio station during the Texans radio hour and read that off of a piece of paper.
Short of that, I don't miss those.
Well, it's okay. You didn't miss anything.
There's nothing he's ever said.
He's never, even when Bob was alive, be honest with you, Keith, and you know this, he would speak after wins.
It was a little hypocritical because he wouldn't find him if he lost, but if they won, he couldn't, Bob would be ready to talk to a microphone.
At least, at least Cal, in good times and bad, is silent.
And you know, Matt, I'll be honest, I was one of the people that booed Rick Smith, but good grief.
I would take Rick Smith back in a breathing heartbeat and apologize to the man.
And that's not an endorsement.
And that's not an endorsement either because Rick was a below-average general manager.
He's just better than what we've got now.
Yeah, this is horrible.
It really is.
And my girlfriend, boy, she was on a rant once she heard the news.
And, you know, and then she asked me, she said, you know, Keith, what do you expect?
This organization has never done anything worth mentioning.
And will Bill go to his go-to?
Well, we've won the division.
Well, guess what?
The division isn't the end-all-b-b-b-all.
And, you know, I'm sorry, this may be a little rude, but being the best-looking girl in a fat girl contest, you're still a fat girl.
Wow.
So apologies to all the people out there.
Yeah, apologies to those of you that are fat.
Keith did not mean to offend you.
So, you know, I just couldn't think of a better analogy is the problem.
So what are you going to do with your tickets?
You're going to keep them or are you going to get rid of them?
Well, I'd like to just, you know, obviously I've got a lot invested in them.
So we would make better sense to sell, and that's what I told the girl, which, you know, I'm, I'm not.
sure someone's going to step right up and scoop them up.
They're in section 115.
PSLs and tickets both because I don't want to lose out on the cost of those things.
But right now my plan is just to go ahead and finish paying for them and just leave the seat empty.
Let me.
I mean, it's a hit.
But does that leave you a little open area for, well, you know, I miss being there and I still love my Texans and I still love my public jersey?
Are you sure that's not leaving you a little room for you to do that?
I'm positive, Matt.
My girlfriend would never stand for it.
Okay.
And she's the one I really keep them for because she's really into football.
But if I told her that we were going to go,
now she would pitch a fifth and I would never hear the end of it.
Yeah, I understood.
Hey, Keith, thank you for the information.
And keep us up to date on how the Texans ticket office handles your conundrum right now.
I will.
Thank you, man.
Thank you.
Appreciate the phone call.
If you want to join us, 713, 212, 5790.
713212-5790.
If you want to reach out to us on Twitter,
at SportsMT, at SportsRV, and at ProNiclo.
I feel like you got something to say.
No, I'm good.
You're empty?
Okay.
I'm empty, but.
So you got plenty of, since people are in, people are just in tough positions, Matt.
Because I'm curious about the whole PSL thing, I guess, is what I was thinking.
Have you all seen Donta Foreman's Facebook page?
Oh, it's on his Facebook?
It's on his Facebook.
He has a personal Facebook.
any official Facebook. It's on his
personal one. Okay.
What am I looking for?
It's the top. First post is on the top.
I never have to say
nothing. Y'all getting to
see for y'all self now.
SMH.
Oh, about, we said this before.
Disgruntled ex-Texans are all
coming out. Deontal Foreman
be the next. You remember, you know, Deonté Foreman's
hated, didn't his dad hate
Bill O'Brien? Did he hate Tom Herman?
I think his dad did hate Tom Herman.
as well.
I don't know about Bill O'Brien.
I can't remember that one.
And I will give Bill the benefit of doubt on something.
Not every one of your players that you cut is going to like you.
It's true.
When Deontie Foreman hadn't been able, I mean, we talked about that coming in.
The Achilles interviews for running backs.
It's just a death now for the most part.
Yeah.
Unfortunately, he hadn't caught on anywhere.
So, let's just say that you should,
anytime an ex-player comes out and says something,
you have to take it with a grain of salt.
I mean, the guys that are being talked about, what is it,
Deiante Foreman has said something,
Jalen Strong has said something,
is DeVier Posey said anything?
What's he up to?
What's Sam Montgomery said anything?
Yikes.
Brennan Williams?
Yeah.
I'm sure Cuesenberry won't say anything
because they treat him very well,
so he won't say anything.
Give me some other players that aren't with the team anymore.
Oh, has, did Jadavian Clani said anything?
I don't even think
Judevian's any sort of former social media,
is he? No, I haven't heard anything.
I mean, he might have been a Twitter.
I forgot Brennan Williams was with the WWE.
He is?
Yeah, as D.O. Madden?
Really?
Does that name bring a back for you?
No, I don't watch the current stuff anymore.
It says currently signed to WWE.
Bernie Williams.
Hmm.
So we, there's a former Texan and it's not a professional wrestler.
If y'all watch WWE, is he any good?
Well, I guess he'd only be good based on what Vince McMahon tells him.
He's the size.
He's 6.6, 300-something pounds.
That's perfect.
Yeah.
That's what today's wrestling is missing.
Do you know that's part of the reason why I don't watch it?
Because there's not enough huge dudes on there?
That's part of it.
Okay.
You want more Andre the Giants.
I don't like 5A and 180.
What about the big show?
Love the big show.
But there aren't, today's wrestling doesn't have that.
Is the big show still wrestling?
No.
Oh, well.
He's retired.
That's a shame.
But Ross,
You watch a normal wrestling on a particular night, whether it be AEW or TNA or WW, and the main stars are 5-9 and 190.
T&A?
Yeah, total non-stop action.
I know what you were thinking.
I would like to watch some TNA.
I bet you would.
That's a line drive on one hop.
This is George Sprang.
Houston's home for Astros baseball.
This Sports Talk 790.
All right.
We're going to give away some Sam Hunt tickets on.
suspension of fun today at 150
Sports RV. Yeah, this is apparently one of his
jams. Do you know this
song? No.
Well, this is
apparently one of his jams.
Country singer. Today's
suspension of fun game is the high-low game
where I'm going to give you a number about a
particular stat and you're going to say to their
higher or lower. Wonderful.
And Ross, you can give them three seconds of advice.
Maybe don't listen to me.
I think it should, I think, you know what, you are calming influence on it.
Okay.
And you have not seeing the questions.
And we'll have tickets to Sam Hunt to give away.
That'll be a second.
So is that a good ticket to give away?
I think so, yeah.
When is the date of the concert?
September 11th.
Okay.
Hopefully we're all clear by then.
Yeah, we have some, we have some other stuff to give away that's like May 2nd and May 15.
Yeah, probably not safe.
That's, that's what I'm saying.
No, they might reschedule those.
Yeah.
But it's just easier to give something away that we know that it's got a
date that hasn't been changed just yet.
By what, did you see Las Vegas shut down yesterday?
Yes.
I'm sad.
I'm glad you didn't book those cheap tickets like you wanted to.
I said, let's go to Vegas, Ross.
The airfare for this weekend was like, if you went basic economy on United, it was $75
round trip.
If it was if you wanted to be able to, you know, have a seat of your choosing, it was $130.
Right.
So Kim's like, you don't need to be going to Vegas during this time.
I said, well, Ross and I are going to make a day trip to Lake Charles.
not even spend the night.
Right.
And then they shut Lake Charles down.
What are us degenerate supposed to do for fun?
I told you, Matt, you can bet on the weather.
The over-under for today was, what, 81 degrees?
What's the weather?
Here's what I'd like to do, but the law will not allow us.
It was 79.
We're at an under right now.
I'd like to invite, you know, we could do, we can invite groups of people of nine people here at the radio station and just throw dice.
Okay.
Because we'll have a little bit of a game.
I think that's illegal.
So maybe
Let me tell you something
We can't have more than 10 people
That's what I'm saying nine
So two okay
Me you and seven people
Okay
And we just
And a dealer
No
We just throw diced ourselves
Oh okay
For craps
You need multiple dealers Matt
You gotta get the hard ways
The 60s
The eights
The fours
We're not gonna know
We're doing simple
Simple crap
Pass
Don't pass
Against the wall
Okay
Or against like a little
Cardboard box
Whatever
Okay
So if you want to join us
For an informal
And by the way
You're saying Matt
This is illegal
Well here's a thing
think. Our officers are probably more concerned right now with a lot of other things besides
whether we've got a craps game going. Did you see there was some memo? I don't know if it
might have been fake, but like the Philadelphia police aren't going to be pulling over people
or worrying about people for like certain crimes like small theft and that's not the only city I've
seen that. I don't know if I believe that. That would then mean that once you're a lot of getting
on a freeway can go as fast as you want. I don't believe that. Hopefully it was a fake memo.
You mean something on Twitter is not fair is not real? Okay. I asked you a question.
before. What is Cal, what should Cal do if everything that Michael Irvin said today was accurate?
Are you okay? Yeah. If I say, what I just tell you? If everything Michael Everett said was accurate.
What should Cal do? Do it just admonish him? Do you say you're doing yourself no favors?
What would a, what would an owner, what would Jerry Jones do if he found out one of his head coaches, whether it be,
Jason Garrett or the new guy, Mike McCarthy,
if he would have said the things that a wide receiver.
Somebody as headstrong as Bill O'Brien would have been fired by Jerry Jones about year two.
That's why he mean Jimmy Johnson didn't get along because Jimmy wanted to run everything.
And probably Jimmy was qualified to do so.
I get what you're saying.
First of all, you'd have to get both sides of the story.
I would try to reach out to DeAndre Hopkins, get to the bottom of this,
hear what he says.
Listen to Bill O'Brien's side because there's two sides every story.
story and the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
And I would guess that Bill O'Brien is probably going to say, hey, I didn't mean it this way.
He took it out of context. It's blown out of proportion. It's not a big deal.
That's not what I meant. And then Cal is probably going to say, okay, cool, Bill. Thanks.
Keep running the franchise. That's probably what's going to happen.
Does Cal know he's allowed to do things?
Are you saying that Cal is starting by prison bars?
No, I think people, I think Bill O'Brien just told him, yeah, no, no, no.
you can't do that. And then Cal's like, oh, I can't, okay.
Maybe somebody has, maybe Bill has said, you know when you own a team, you don't really run it.
You just collect the profits.
And you let me, let me run everything, Callie Boy. What does he call him?
He doesn't call him Mr. McNair. I can tell you that for damn sure.
There was only one Mr. McNair over there in Kirby.
Little C. What?
Puppie? I don't know.
What is Cal shirt short for? Callum?
Maybe Cal is just Cal.
Do we even know this?
But do you remember
when the day that Bob died
that we talked about
what's going to be the Texans
in three to four years?
And there were a lot of people that said
that maybe Cal will separate himself
and his father and be his own man.
And I said there's no chance no way of that
because of the fact that Cal was always
at the right or left hip of Bob.
That he really didn't have much
to do with the decision making.
That he didn't,
that he just basically took the leads off of his father.
And then when you do that and you don't learn from your father or you learn from anybody
and you're now giving the keys to the car, you're going to have accidents.
He's driving the Texans train and has never been an operator before.
And so what he did is he said, instead of saying, I'm a grown-ass man who owns his team
and I'm going to put the right people in place, I'm going to give more responsibility to a guy
because at least I know who he is.
Cal apparently is short for Calvin in a lot of instances,
but on the Texans website, his full name at is D. Cal McNair.
You think he calls him DeCal?
Like, I am P. Ross via Real.
You know what I need?
Quickly.
PD and Magnolia 142.
Hi, PD.
Hey, man.
What's up?
You tell me.
Where you been?
I'm getting ready to go do some day drinking.
All right.
Where?
In your car?
In my house.
All right.
You know, yesterday was the first.
time since Prohibition that bars were shut down on St. Patrick's Day.
Interesting.
How'd you cope?
Were you okay?
Or did you just get smashed at home?
Okay.
I didn't drink.
The horses can't run?
Can the horses get COVID?
They got to hold him.
Okay.
I just went to Best Buy.
They're only letting so many people in there.
All right?
What did you get?
There's got to be a punchline of this, right?
Is there toilet paper at Best Buy?
No, I bought a Roku, man.
I'm going to jail break this
Rokey thing.
Is that illegal?
It is, but that's okay.
I've heard about jail broken
and brookue.
I heard it's pretty nice.
All right.
All right.
Anything else?
And they can't be coming to your house.
That's for sure.
You haven't had it cleaned in months.
I got to roll.
P.D., see you later.
On that.
Bye.
Bye.
All right.
he would like to play the high-low game. It is
suspension of fun. It's a new 150
staple on the Matt Thomas show. For Sam
Hunt tickets. Which I think people
that's a nice
prize, right? It's when I give him old
1983 bands with two hits.
If you want to play for Sam
Hunt tickets.
Sports facts are fun.
If you know them all,
get Matt's questions
right, and you'll have
a ball.
On
suspension.
fun.
Here's your host, Matt Thomas.
Top of the hour, we go by what Michael Irvin said and try to figure out if DeAndre
was doing any damage control, fanning the flames, whatever it was, that is coming up at
the top of the hour, and why in the world would Cal McNair allow one man to run the operation
to the power that he has?
But right now it is time for suspension of fun that is a high, low game.
read you an interesting anecdote and give you a number.
The number will either be higher or lower.
You get two in a row right, and you're going to win Sam Hunt tickets.
Ross will give you his very quick analysis and when he thinks it is,
and then you ultimately have to decide, right?
Here we go.
Okay.
Joe and Deer Park on 790.
How are you, friend?
Doing good.
Doing good, Matt.
Joe, good luck to you.
Here is the question.
World Series titles for the Yankees.
Is it higher or lower than 24?
Ross, give me your advice.
It's higher.
Joe, what do you think?
Higher or lower than 24?
Lower.
No, it's 27.
Yeah, everybody, yes.
I literally just told you, Joe.
Oh, geez.
I mean, I know I screwed up yesterday, but come on.
Yeah, people have zero faith in you.
Listen to one Yankees fan for one second on Twitter, and you'll know it's 27.
Yankee fan tells you all the time they've won 27 world titles.
713, 212, 5, 7.
if you want to play in suspension of funds.
713-21-2-5-7-90.
Hi, Thomas. How are you?
Good.
Here we go.
Reggie Miller's career three-point percentage.
37% is it higher or lower?
Ross, what do you first blush think?
I think it's slightly higher, but I don't know.
Thomas, what do you think, higher or lower than 37%?
That is correct.
39.5%.
Number two for the win.
Alec Baldwin's Twitter follower.
count. Oh, God.
500,000.
Ross, higher or lower than 500,000?
I would guess higher, but I have no clue.
What do you think, Thomas?
He's a national guy. I go higher.
No, 279,200.
Yeah.
Thanks for playing suspension of fun.
No fun when you don't win.
Yeah, I didn't know that one.
All right.
Let's go to line four.
Alex, how are you, friend?
Hey, what's up, Matt?
I'm so excited to win these Mike Hunt tickets.
Dude, these are going to be so good.
No, no, no.
Sam, Hunt.
Sam Hunt.
No, who's that?
All right.
You're out.
I'm not letting you play.
Al, it's Sugarland.
Al, how are you?
Good, buddy.
Here we go.
Tony Gonzalez's career touchdown receptions.
130.
Ross, what do you think?
130.
Oh, my gosh.
I'm going to go over, but I don't know.
What do you think, Al?
I'd say under.
Under is right.
It's 111.
Full of win.
Good job.
Don't listen to me.
The state population of Texas.
31 million.
What do you think?
Ross, what do you think?
State population in Texas.
31 million under.
Under?
What do you think, Al?
I'd say higher.
No, it's lower.
28.7 million.
Thanks for playing suspension of fun.
I was thinking it was like 27 million, but okay.
Just saying.
All right.
We got to jam for two more contestants.
713.
713-1-2-5-79.
Todd.
How are you, Todd?
I'm good.
How are you?
Good, Todd.
here we go. Dwayne Wade's career points.
26,178.
Higher or lower, 26178.
Lower.
No, that's right.
23-165.
For the win, number of households that have CNN in their home.
86.7 million, higher or lower?
What do you think, Ross?
I would say over because it's a basic cable package, but I don't know.
What do you think?
Todd?
Lower.
It was higher.
Sorry.
It was a buzzer.
I was right.
I'm bad about $750, I think.
Yeah, people are not taking your advice at all.
Sure, should they for the most part.
All right.
We got one question left.
Jason, all you got to get is one right and you're winning.
You ready?
All right.
Number of doubles for Craig Bigio, 778, higher or lower.
778.
Ross, what do you think?
I believe
I used to know the exact number
Hurry
I think it's under
What do you think
Higher or lower than 778
I'm gonna go under
Under is right
668
You got the Sam hunt
Not the other guy
Hutt's ticket
And that was suspension
I know he's got
3,060 hits
I know that
Yeah
Does it suck to you
That his 3,000 hit
Was he was trying to
Stretch a single
Into a double
Yes
What it should have been
Was a triple
That he just
dropped the anchor
and got a double. That would have been the Craig Bigio's signature.
That's true. God, I see
that highlight all the time and model calls and he'll
trying to go for two. He'll be out.
But it was still a hit.
Shouldn't even be a hit?
If you were to change a stat in Major League Baseball
real quick, would you change that one?
If you get thrown, no, you still got a hit.
But man, it's just
and I know we're talking about something that happened
a long time ago, but it's still
as much as I love Craig, I just hate
the fact that he got tagged out on that hit.
trying to grab that extra 90 feet.
Yeah.
It did kind of not ruin the call, but...
No, it didn't ruin the call.
It just...
It tempered the moment is what it was.
I was down in Houston when he did that.
I was actually in Utah or Minnesota.
I forget what year it was.
It was probably 2007.
So it was 2007.
I just moved to Minnesota.
Yeah.
There you go.
All right.
And that was our suspension of fun.
My brother was at that game.
We gave away a pair of Sam Hunt tickets.
Good.
Not the other guy's names.
No.
A lot of amateur comedians out there.
Everybody's a comedian.
Everybody is.
All right.
So let's do this.
We're going to open up the final hour of the show with letting you hear what Michael Urban said again.
And we're going to run through it again and kind of chop it up little by little because we had a great debate about this at the start of the show.
And for those who didn't catch the new now, we're going to do it all over again because it's important.
and we have not heard word one, by the way, from the Texans,
although wink, wink, wink, Ed Wurter, got a, wink, got a Texan source, wink, wink, wink,
phone call that said, hey, can you help us with damage control?
Why haven't the Texans said anything?
Why haven't the Texans said anything?
Yeah, they traded away one of their franchise cornerstones.
And nothing.
Zero.
I don't know, though.
Have the Vikings come out and say anything about Diggs?
Have, I mean, what other trades have gone down?
Well, my guess is if I...
I mean, you had the Belichick in...
Brady and the owner.
Robert Kraft, yeah.
Mentioned something about Brady.
All I'm saying is,
I don't think he has to reply to something
every time something is said about it,
but this is pretty damn serious, right?
This is to Sean Watson, Watson,
basically saying that,
that the Sean wants it.
That DeAndre Hopkins is Aaron Hernandez-like.
And that's a really tough pill to swallow,
especially if you, DeAndre Hopkins.
And that why did DeAndre Hopkins want to tell Michael Irvin
and did DeAndre Hopkins give Michael Irvin the All Clear
to say next time you're on television, drop this?
Because he was on today on that show and that get-up show.
and it wasn't like,
I got some news to tell you about.
It was the second bit of conversation.
And maybe, again,
anything Tom Brady-related is going to be top tier
because Tom Brady is obviously more well-known than DeAndreys.
But that was a damn bombshell.
And we'll let you hear it again,
starting the final hour if you have not done so already,
in just a moment.
Is the Matt Thomas show.
All right, 202 is the time.
It is the final hour of the Matt Thomas show.
We've had probably what in the last two days, Ross,
four or five different people
say there are season ticket holders
that have said, I'm done, I'm canceling.
I don't think people call the show to lie.
But I think it's a lot easier
to say
I'm going to do something
and then
when you calm down, you go
all right, maybe I'll give it another chance.
For instance, and this is
a very, very, very timely example.
There is a rest of,
in Kingwood that I will not mention its name.
They have multiple occasions, but the one we go to obviously is close to our home.
TGI Fridays?
No, that's not it, but don't even another guess.
That has, that had a Father's Day breakfast that we had an awful experience at.
I mean, it was wretched.
The food was good, but the service was bad.
It wasn't available.
The lines were bad.
It was a poorly organized day.
And it was such a bad experience for me that I said, I'm never going to go again.
but if you hear what I said just a second ago, I said the food is so good and it's reasonably
priced that I wind up going back and I've been back probably 10 or 11 times.
I think a lot of us, whether it be about a restaurant that we don't want to go to again,
or I'm not going to listen to a Matt Thomas show again, or I'm not going to go to this place again.
I said I was going to give up vodka forever in my sophomore year of college.
And I've drink some vodka there.
Yeah, but that was about it.
That was about hell.
That wasn't because Vodka did something bad to you.
Vodka did something very bad to me, Matt.
Vodka did and forced it down your throat.
Vodka did very bad things to me.
I'm not trying to talk about New Year's resolutions or things to give up for a loan.
I'm talking about a bad experience about something.
I will never go to this again.
A good example of this is United Airlines.
United gets crushed by our audience.
Absolutely.
And some hosts.
And some hosts.
Some I'm not working with this right now.
Hi, Uncle Greg.
but you wind up flying them again because either they're going to be the lowest airfare
or in many cases it's a non-stop flight.
Yeah, and we're in Houston, which is a house.
So it's either United or it's Southwest.
But I've heard a lot of people who complain about it.
I think to some season ticket holders, the Texans are United Airlines.
I'm going to go with that reference.
Yeah, if you want NFL football in Houston.
And you want to root for a team, you don't.
Like, for instance, American.
And Delta may be wonderful airlines, Ross.
Right.
But guess what?
Their airfares are a little more expensive, and you got to change planes.
And adding changing planes means an up and down, a connection time.
It adds hours to your trip.
So why would I not want to fly a nonstop airline that's my hometown airline?
Now, granted, there's some warts on it, and their customer service is lousy, and I don't like
the upper management and my flights are delayed occasionally, and they screwing my baggage.
or I can go to America or Delta and I can go love on them,
but pay 50 hours more and I've got to change planes.
Like Delta's airfares out of Houston,
I'm a travel, you know what I am?
I'm a travel whore.
Yeah, you're terrible.
Delta's airfares are terrible out of here.
Right.
And you've got to go through Atlanta or Salt Lake City or JFK.
I mean, it's just not easy.
We're United.
There's 200 non-stops every day to a bunch of places.
You can go to San Diego four times a day if you want to.
And don't have to change planes.
United Airlines are the Texans.
And there are a lot of you that are bumping around today saying,
I'm not going to fly United.
I am not going to go to another Texans game.
I am giving up my season tickets.
Do you look at those flights?
Look at those prices.
But then that invoice comes in and you go, well, you're talking about 10 games,
and I get to go meet my favorite Texan at a meat-and-grreet barbecue.
You don't want to take your loss in the PSL.
All right, I'm there.
I just feel like the Twitter, Facebook world of I'm giving up on them, I'm never going to watch them again, is a lot more bluster.
And the thing that is, it's not really your fault.
You love a team.
You love the good times and the bad times.
You know that at the end of the year, only one team gets to hoist the trophy.
and you dream it at your squad.
But the reality is there's a significantly better chance
that it's never going to happen
or not going to happen this year than it would.
Only one team out of 32 gets to do it.
But you hold out hope.
But I'm going to, as I say all these things,
the only reason why Ross,
I could see a mass defection of 50,000 people saying,
screw you, I'm not going on game again,
is that Bill O'Brien got in front of a press conference
and said, listen, you bastards.
I don't care if you come to games or not.
We don't need you.
I'm Bill O'Brien, head coach, play caller, offensive coordinator.
Hell, I have more power than Cal does.
Screw you.
That's what gets 50,000 people to say.
You know what?
Damn you.
I'm done.
It's not going to happen, though.
That's not going to happen.
He's going to go in front of a microphone whenever that is, and he's going to say,
hey, we're doing this for the fans.
We love you guys.
I can't wait for it another season, looking forward to the things.
And that optimism will reign supreme.
I've met too many of you.
I've met too many of you that call my show and tell me how much you hate them,
but yet you're still there on Sundays.
They're United Airlines.
There you go.
I think it works.
They're that place in Kingwood that I go to because the food is good and the prices are very reasonable.
Even though I've gotten terrible condescending service on multiple occasions.
Maybe you're the problem, Matt.
Maybe you're too demanding on the waitress, waitstaff.
No, no, I just wanted clean plates.
Oh.
That was it.
The plates were dirty?
There were no plates.
Oh, there were no plates.
That's not good.
No.
I think there is something to that.
I think there are a lot of people who are upset and are mad.
I'm going to cancel.
I'm going to do all this.
And then they just don't, they're not going to be able to follow through with it.
Because it's what I always do.
I like tailgating.
I like going to the games.
We have a whole group and we all go.
There are thousands of people in the Houston area that use their disposable income.
They don't go to trips to Mexico.
They don't go to Hawaii.
They don't buy a beach house.
What they do is they put their money and their heart and their soul on Sundays at Reliant or at NRG Stadium.
You can't shake.
If you're doing 15 years, you think you think blustery Bill O'Brien teapot is going to change all that?
Look, Ross, we've had bad coaches here.
We've had bad general managers.
Charlie Cashley, not a plus general manager.
Rick Smith, not a plus general manager.
Mm-hmm.
Dom Capers on a plus head coach.
Gary Kubiak, probably on the average side.
Well, we've never had a not plus coach and general manager, so you got that now.
So now we're looking at double-negatives.
Right.
So maybe that's it.
Maybe that's the boiling point.
So, and I mean this with all due respect, if you really are canceling your tickets,
send me a text or not a text, but send me a tweet.
Send me an email, say, hey, here's what it is.
I've done it because I'm really.
Matt is hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.
But short of that, it's awfully hard.
This is a, this is a, this is a relationship that is so hard to separate.
You know, on Facebook they say when a relationship, you're single, you're married.
It's complicated.
The Texans are a complicated relationship.
But the number one player on this franchise for the last five years is gone for,
is what Michael Irvin said today, a ham sandwich.
I said tens in the dollar.
He says ham sandwich, tomato, tomato.
Right.
Bill O'Brien has been given amazing control by an owner who I don't even know.
He might be even more tone deaf than Bill O'Brien.
Well, I would go oblivious with him.
Because there's nobody in Cal's life that's telling Cal.
This guy's a joke.
Cows of the country club playing golf, playing cards, eating barbecue,
taking pictures with his watch.
getting sauce all over his shirt.
Yeah, oh, he's basically me when it comes to barbecue.
He's not.
He's, I'm not saying that Cal's got to listen to sports radio because sports radio is going to be that,
it's going to be that strange denomination of radical, radical fans.
But just kind of feel the heartbeat of the city.
Read the papers.
Listen to a little sports radio.
Watch the TV newscast.
Watch a little, I'm not saying watch hours and hours and hours of it.
But he's got no sign that he's got no sign that he.
He would, that we have no sign that Bill, that the cow's like, Bill, what the hell are you doing?
You traded him for crap.
We got nothing back in return.
We've kicked off two of our best players in each of the last two seasons.
And what do we have to show for it?
No first round picks.
And when you, when you go trade for players, you overspend them with no guarantees that Laramie
Tundles is going to be here in two years.
And then you took the number one receiver.
that our young quarterback needs, and you traded him for a ham sandwich,
and now you want this guy Deshaun Watson to sign a long-term extension with us?
And now you've got NFL players around the league saying,
do not get an offer from the Texans.
I'm not going to take it.
Word around what happened today with Michael Irvin is going to travel fast.
Rossi, no matter how often we try to slice and dice it,
and overanalyze it, it doesn't take much for these players to figure out what's going on.
these players don't need Matt and Ross to analyze every single facet of what Michael Irvin said.
Michael Irvin, one of the greatest players ever to play in the National Football League,
a Hall of Fame wide receiver who has tremendous relationships with lots of different wide receivers
because they believe in him. He's a confidant. He's a man that gives good advice.
He goes on an ESPN today and says what he says, and when you'll hear coming out of the break,
and those players are like, the hell I'm going to Houston, Texas.
That's the truth.
But you did have guys, I mean, Vernon Hargreys re-signed.
Bradley Robey re-signed
Please
Eric Murray came here
And Randall Cobb came
And they all got overpaid
And they all got overpaid
All of them did
We don't know that
I mean I don't think Bradley Roby got overpaid
Does it matter
Bradley Roby is going to be a slot corner for this team
Well I'm just saying
If it's completely 100% toxic
Then you wouldn't have those things happening
Does it matter what percentage toxic it is?
I think so yeah
So if it's only 60% toxic it's okay
I don't know.
We can't put a thumb on that.
I'm just saying.
Michael Irvin's words after this.
Good morning, strippers.
Shower with the Matt Thomas show.
Wash off the glitter and daddy issues.
19 on Sports Talk 790.
If you have not heard it, it's worth repeating because, man,
when Michael Irvin wants to drop a bomb on the old,
what was the name of the show, Get Up?
He did.
And this is what he's talking about with his conversation
between Michael Irvin and DeAndre Hopkins and Michael Irvin spills the beans.
And Graney, you know, it stunned me, Graney, and I'm going to tell you guys, both of you guys,
you know, I got on the phone with him right after I heard about this trade,
and I tried to pull it out of him like, what happened?
What happened here, man?
There's no way they give away one of the best receivers in the NFL for a ham sandwich like they did.
And he kept the high road on it.
He said, Michael, you know, I'm just happy about where I'm going, where I, and that's,
it. He left it there. But of course,
you know, I just, I couldn't rest
my mind on it. I called him again
24 hours later like late yesterday
and then he was willing
to talk more. And I said, tell me
what happened in Houston
and he went into it. He told
me, he said, Michael, it was
a bit of a power struggle there
because Bill O'Brien thought, Coach O'Brien
thought he had too much influence
over the locker room.
He called DeAndre Hopkins
in a meeting to talk about
this and to kind of just hash it out.
In that meeting, he started the meeting with telling DeAndre Hopkins this, that blew my mind
when DeAndre told me this.
He said, he told DeAndre Hopkins, he said, hey, the last time I had to have a meeting
like this, it was with Aaron Hernandez.
And he said, you know, he told DeAndre he doesn't like that he has his baby mamas around sometimes.
And from that, I think the relationship just went bad.
And thus, we got a trade of DeAndre Hopkins from Houston for basically,
like I said earlier, a ham sandwich, all because of that relationship.
An hour later, DeAndre Hopkins went to Twitter and said this is being blown way out of proportion.
As I've said before, I enjoyed and am proud of my time with the Texans.
I have the utmost respect for Coach O'Brien, and that will not change.
Now I'm ready to play for the Cardinals.
Not in denial, but a softening.
Let me tell you something.
Ross.
Yes, Matthew.
There have been some things in my life.
And that might I'm talking about in front of a microphone.
well I may have told you something
and then you went and told somebody else
I'm not saying you have ever done this
but I'm just saying that if someone has to hear it from you
and that other person comes out and says
did you say that about me Matt?
I think human nature can
definitely soften a blow on that.
What do you mean?
I've told you, I could tell you some things in confidence
that you didn't know was
confidence. You went and told that
person about Matt said this about you.
That person comes to me and says, Mad, you say this
about me? And I could soften the blow
on that. Okay.
And so, no, this is out of context
and that's not what I meant. Yes. Okay.
I think that's completely human nature.
If we had a salesperson
on the third floor, we did not like.
Okay. And I said, X, Y, Z
salesperson on the third floor does, is not very good
at his job. And you
and Mike, and you
saw that third person and salesperson
and they said, hey, Ross, I want to work with you on something.
I don't want to work with you, X, Y, Z, Selsberg, because Matt says you're not very good at your job.
That person comes to me and says, Matt, did you say that?
I'm going to say, hey, no, what I said is, you know, that we haven't worked together much.
We haven't, we haven't gelled enough.
I could, I could turn it around.
Yeah, so you're saying.
Bill O'Brien can spin how this, however he wants is what you're saying.
No, I'm saying DeAndre Hopkins could spend.
Yeah.
That DeAndre Hopkins, my guess is, doesn't want to take.
this huge responsibility of not only is Bill O'Brien a worse person than we thought he was already than yesterday, but he's a borderline racist.
And that he brought up Aaron Hernandez's name and put me in the same category, basically meaning that I must be headed towards a future path of causing criminal mischief eventually killing us.
I mean, there was, when Aaron Hernandez's his name, it's just such a big name to use when talking.
talking about having a meeting, even if Bill O'Brien's last one-on-one meeting was with Aaron Hernandez,
which isn't the case. He's been coaching the NFL for a bunch of seasons. I guarantee you,
Bill O'Brien's had a one-on-one conversation with other players before Aaron Hernandez.
But obviously he thought that DeAndrey Hopkins in the Texans Clubhouse was so powerful
or toxic or both that he invoked his name. Why did he pull that name of all the
names. That's
to stingy. That's to hurt you.
Like I said before, what if
my boss, Brian Erickson came to me
and said, Matt, we're
having problems with your show. I haven't had
problems since this guy
was here. That
would sting.
Bill O'Brien was trying to sting
DeAndre Hopkins.
We don't know that.
Yeah, we do. No, we don't. Yeah.
Why would he bring up his name then?
We don't know. Give me a logical reason why
would bring up Aaron Hernandez's name.
Like I said, he could just be saying, well, you know, last time we did this,
it was, I'd had something like this was Aaron Hernandez.
Like, just as an off, it's just a one-off comment.
Do you think that, do you think, okay, otherwise you're thinking that Bill O'Brien,
try to put yourself in Bill O'Brien's shoes.
He is saying that he thinks that DeAndre Haynes is a toxic character and capable of murder?
No, I'm saying that he thinks he's a toxic person in the locker room.
That's what Bill O'Brien thinks.
I'm not saying that Bill O'Brien thinks that Deandre Hopkins is capable of double murder.
I'm not saying that.
I'm saying that Aaron Hernandez must have been such a bad dude in New England.
That he had to cross and that the situation with DeAndre was so bad in Houston,
he could only cross-reference one other player in all the years of his conversation.
And he went with Aaron Hernandez?
Well, did you, I mean, apparently with New England, did you watch that Aaron Hernandez documentary on Netflix?
Apparently everything was great for them, for the most part, as far as a relationship and the locker room.
Everybody loved Aaron Hernandez in that locker room.
so that's why the Gallagory kind of doesn't make sense to me.
I'm trying to figure this out.
Then why would he bring it up?
I don't know.
I don't know.
You don't know either, though.
I'm telling you, you don't bring up a name like that unless you want to tell that person, you are awful.
Because Aaron Hernandez and the word awful are synonymous.
They absolutely are.
Of course.
So why would you bring up the name?
I don't know.
He could have said the last time I had a meeting like this was with Gidevian Clowney.
You mean to tell me Ross that Jadavion Clowney and Bill O'Brien in their meetings?
that's ridiculous.
They were fighting over their contract and his contract.
I guarantee they had a meeting over that.
I don't know what kind of meeting he would have had with Aaron Hernandez.
I don't know what the type of meeting it would be or the setting or whatever.
Maybe they met at a restaurant.
He said the last time I met at a restaurant was Aaron Hernandez.
The meeting quickly deteriorated.
Michael Irvin said when he invoked Aaron Hernandez's name,
DeAndre Hopkins' first initial reaction was blown away.
was blown away. Why are you bringing me up his name? I have not done anything.
Doesn't seem lighthearted. Doesn't seem that was just a name that was thrown out there. There was a reason why Aaron Hernandez's name was dropped.
Well, Bill O'Brien is completely out of his mind, or there's more to this that we just don't know.
Or Bill O'Brien is a legitimate crazy person. I'll go with that. Jimmy and Tomball at 227. Hi, Jimmy.
Before I get to my Bill O'Brien, I was just going to say, that Craig Vigio game,
And this is another story for another day, but me and two of my sisters got in that thing without tickets.
But you're talking about, you don't like the fact that he got thrown out at second trying to stretch that.
If I remember, right, there was a runner on third that ended up scoring because he did that.
And I want to say that was a tying run, and then we went into extra in E.
And Carlos C. at that grand slam off of Jose Valverde.
So I don't think it was a completely wasted out.
But I don't really know what he did.
say about Bill O'Brien other than
I mean, you look at
I mean, and he's a different
caliber player, but Ricky Williams got
traded for an entire draft.
I mean, I feel like
D.Hop should have been a, you know,
a first and a second, multiple
first. Like, I feel like if he was
openly shopped on the market,
I just, I mean,
when I heard we got David Johnson, I thought, okay, David
Johnson and they're sending us a pick,
like kind of like we're buying a pick.
Right, just like you're in baseball. You buy pick sometimes.
or you buy immoral prospects.
Right. Just like Brock upweiler.
And then when D-Hop in there, I mean, that just, I really don't know what to say.
And I'll just, I'll let you'll go with that.
I mean, y'all know I've been a Bill of Ryan Hader, but this is just next level.
I mean, I don't even know what to say anymore.
It is next level.
It is.
You know what's next level?
And isn't Ross to me and not even the next level of the conversation.
The next level is that they traded him for a ham sandwich.
and Ed Warder gets a phone call from somebody and says,
please put this out on your Twitter account to make us look better.
If you've not heard the Ed Warner tweet, we'll repeat it,
and then we'll see how many times you laugh and giggle
and how many times you go, are you kidding me?
Yeah, we have basically like three pieces of evidence.
We have to be like detectives with this.
Oh, I'm doing a really good job.
I am, I am the, if I'm the Matlock or the Inspector Cluso,
or who's the, who's the, you're more of a Cluso, I would say.
You know we are? We are, what is it, CSI Houston Texans.
CSI Kirby.
Hey, it's Jeff Blum.
Blum Fact number 14.
I was on the White Sox in 2005.
Yeah, sorry about that sweep, H-Town.
But we're all good right now, right?
World Series champion!
Back to your lunchtime champion, Matt Thomas.
We're going to rotate our detective music, but we don't want to start with one of the classics.
Don't give me that dirty look.
This song sucks.
What is this?
This is Rockford Files?
Yeah.
It's a top 15 song back in the day.
Okay.
By Mike Post.
Mike Post.
Okay.
I'll take your word.
This literally hit the charts.
Oh, yeah.
That's terrible.
By the late Jim Garner, who was also Maverick.
All right.
All right.
And he was also that guy in the notebook.
Right?
Jim Garner?
James Garner was?
I never saw the notebook.
Is that a summer?
Is that a watch list during this fire thing?
I skip that.
I actually, I actually,
I mean, it's a good movie.
It's a good movie. Thank you.
It's actually a good movie.
But it's a very sappy love story.
This weekend, it's Godfather 2.
The next weekend for that, it's Godfather 3.
Maybe Godfather 3 this weekend.
What is everybody told you about Godfather 3?
It's not horrible.
I've heard 2 is amazing.
Three takes a drop.
three is like a decent movie
I think you can skip three altogether really
you really think I can
but will it wrap everything up in the boat for me?
It doesn't add anything to the story really
they really only made it
and Francis Ford Coppola only made it right
because the studio he needed money
that's like the only reason he's so
is he still alive Francis Fort Coppola? I don't think so
what are the movies we're famous for
he does still make wines
are they all can't remember
let me Google it
all right so we're trying to figure out exactly
oh he co-wrote Patton
That was a classic.
All this stuff.
This is catchy.
No, it's not.
Basically what we have is...
We have three pieces of evidence at this point, right?
We have what Michael Irvin said.
Right.
We have what Edward is in the mouthpiece of the Texan said.
Let's read that tweet, by the way.
And we have what DeAndre Hopkins said.
So we played what Michael Irvin said.
Michael Irvin basically said what happened, and he blew up.
And we got chips?
This is crime.
This is like...
This isn't a detective show, though.
I thought you wanted all, like, old TV show.
No, I would do that.
Let's give us, what's the next detective?
How about some, I like some law and order.
Law and order is good.
That's a classic.
Let's put it's a law and order during this.
This is fine.
Okay, so the Ed, so we played the comments.
Here's the quote.
Hashtag Texan source, colon, because I want to read this word for word.
I don't want to try to miss anything on this.
DeAndre Hopkins trade was result of him seeking $18 to $20 million per year with team
recognizing deals for Deshawn Watson and Laramie Tonson needed soon.
Again, I think it's a terrible precedent that you try to renegotiate a contract with three years remaining on the contract.
Yes.
But if the number is accurate, we're talking about giving him a total of $10 million over those three years.
Not necessarily going to break an organization.
Now, it might pinch, but it's not going to break, especially for a guy that has been at the top of his profession
and never been paid like the top of his profession.
He's been number five or six, but never been at the top.
And all, by the way, has been all pro, saves his quarterback spaken, doesn't get any trouble,
behaves himself, and unlike most receivers in the NFL, for the most part, is not a diva.
A little bit of a diva.
But a little bit, but compared to other ones, O'Dell Beckham.
O'Donnell Beckham's a head case.
Yeah, the head case.
He's not a head case.
He's a little bit of a deep.
Yeah, let me tell you, when you're born a wide receiver, you're on a div.
Does this make you think Bill O'Brien's more of a diva than Deandre?
Hopkins.
Ooh, yeah, I would say that.
Oh, for sure.
For sure.
All right, back to the Edwardter tweet.
Hashtag text and source.
DeAndre Hopkins trade was a result of him seeking $18 to $20 million a year.
Here comes the STFU.
Relationship between head coach GM Bill O'Brien and Hopkins was not an issue or a factor.
That's Edward.
That's Edward.
That's Edward, not us.
Hashtag Cardinals offer, quote, best by far.
So we have Michael Irvin's comments.
We have Ed Wier's tweet.
And then we have straight from the horse's mouth of DeAnder Hopkins.
This is his tweet.
Yeah.
This is being blown way out of proportion.
As I've said before, I am enjoyed and am proud of my time with the Texans.
I have the utmost respect for Coach O'Brien, and that will not change.
Now I'm ready for the Cardinals to play for the Cardinals.
He's trying to soft play this a little bit.
My opinion, my opinion only.
I don't think Michael Irving went on a show and made things up.
No.
Or embellished.
Or stretched the truth.
Michael Irving was only on the show for four minutes on this story.
He couldn't have taken a conversation that added layers to it.
And what were they, Skyping him in or something?
Yeah.
Basically, he said that Bill O'Brien called in DeAndre,
Hopkins was concerned about how much control he had in the locker room.
And the last time he had a meeting like this was with Aaron Hernandez, and that the meeting
got worse.
And ultimately, Bill O'Brien was also not happy that the baby mamas were hanging around the
offices.
And the DeAndre Hopkins had too much control of the locker room.
Yeah, as I said at the very beginning of the year.
Which I think is probably a real problem.
Super sleuth sports RV.
You know how I feel about this.
Right.
I'm going to let you deduce everything that you've just, we've just presented to you.
And you are Detective Villarreal.
Let's go.
Well, Edwarder on the Texan.
Edward is basically on the Texan side.
And by the way, why did Edwarder tweet this out today?
Because he got it from the Texans.
Why today?
Because this whole thing blew up.
Because it all blew up.
So Edwarder is saying that the relationship is not an issue.
And DeAndre Hopkins says he has the utmost respect for Bill O'Brien.
So both sides are lying.
He's trying to downplay.
So the Texan side is lying and the DeAndre Hopkins side is.
line. Yes. Yes. Okay. Now you're asking me. I want your opinion. You tell me what do you
think it is? I think I I think that the the comments were probably said I don't think
Michael Irvin's lying. I think it couldn't have been bad enough to where I it doesn't
seem like that I think what did fracture the relationship and the reason that he was moved was
because of the deal. Yeah. Because he wanted more money. Yeah. I think that's what it came down to
the business side of it.
Okay. But I don't look.
the Cardinals do it was best by far because we have evidence that proves it otherwise that's that's
assonine all right nick your detective low what do you got detective low uh yeah you clearly the deal
was rushed they if if if you're gonna trade him if you're only if your only way forward is to get
rid of deandre hopkins you have to get more value out of him you can't just take whatever deal is
available. Them saying that this was the
best deal available is a complete lie.
Absolute lie. I don't
understand why they had to rush it.
I want to know more about that.
What about Edwarders saying that the Texan sources,
the relationship issue, nothing to do with it?
That's just PR, it's Texan PR
feeding him bunk.
It might have been. Edward's tweet might as well say
Texans PR on it. I'm with that.
But I think, if DeAnder
Hopkins says it's being blown out of proportion,
I'm apt to believe him. Why would
why would he not say that?
Why would it?
Because there were some really...
Because he doesn't have to say anything.
The Under Hopkins didn't have to tweet anything.
He's in Arizona Cardinal.
He doesn't have to come out and say a word.
So why is he doing this?
Because he's a nice guy?
Truth be told, Erbant, you mean to tell me in your life you've never said awful things about somebody
and then you try to backtrack on them?
Not a via tweet, no.
But he can't call everybody.
He can't call a press conference on this.
The only way he can communicate to America is through tweet.
He's not going on.
shows. And if he thinks it's being blown out of proportion
and he has the utmost respect for Bill. He didn't
have to tweet that is what I'm saying. He didn't have to make
a statement. He didn't have to say word one.
I don't know, but people are waiting for him. People are staring at his
Twitter account, winning for something. Because that's what we do. We wait to
find out what they say. But he was not obligated
to say anything. I'm telling
you he tried to downplay a little bit.
But I believe everything
that, because look
at who he's talking about. A man
who has had massive problems with
his staff
and players. Yeah.
Look at all the responses we're getting from former Texan players.
They're all throwing Bill O'Brien into the mud.
Who else?
Deante Foreman, Jaylen Strong, who else is saying something?
I'm ready for JD.
I'm ready for JD.
You know what?
I'm ready for Tyron Matthew to say something.
Honey badger, you ain't afraid to talk about this.
Although he's probably happy that Texans gave him a second chance after leaving the Cardinals.
So my guess is he wouldn't say much.
Right?
I don't know.
All right.
If you're a detective out there.
and you want to tell us what you've to do from all of this.
You got a final, we're not going to play, believe it or not.
We just found a word that we've just, we have temporarily, unfortunately, this damn
coronavirus, coronavirus has suspended, believe it or not.
The damn virus got America as fast as a growing sports game show.
We put it on a temporary hiatus because of the fact we can't, we're not offering prize
that we don't want to give you a odd things that we can't guarantee you're going to win.
We've got to get healthy Ross really quick because America.
America's fastest growing game must return.
Yes.
It's been the fastest growing for about 10 years.
It has been a long time.
No fear.
No worries.
And no hair.
It's the Matt Thomas Way.
Houston Sports Talk continues with the Matt Thomas show.
Honeybadger Ross did tweet out something earlier today.
Okay.
And I lost it because I had a grammatical mistake in my tweet.
Did you fix it?
No, I did not.
So aren't you glad I caught that for you?
That's fine. It happens. I don't really rough up too many people on grammatical
corrections on Twitter because you're writing and you're trying to do as fast as you can.
What is his Twitter account?
Matthew Era.
Matthew Era.
He tweeted, I'm a genius, L.O.L.
Which could mean any number of things.
And then he also tweeted after that, when you love what you have, you already have everything you need.
That's a lot of work there.
Decipher that.
When you love what you have, you already have...
Okay, that's nice and makes sense.
Sure.
Yeah, that sounds like something you would put on your Pinterest profile.
I don't have a Pinterest profile.
I got a lot of profiles.
I don't any one of them.
It'd be that with like a sunny beach.
Okay, so let's decipher.
Why don't he put I'm a genius?
I-M-A, space, genius.
I'm a genius.
Let's see.
That was at 11 o'clock in the a.m.
When he woke up.
Well, possibly.
Let's see.
DeAndre Hopkins tweeted at 1048.
So it's 12 minutes after DeAndre Hopkins's tweet.
And does Tyrone Matthews follow DeAndre Hopkins on Twitter?
I would imagine so.
I don't know.
Texans have said nothing.
Matter of fact, when Michael Irvin did his thing, because I watched it live this morning,
it was a little before 9 o'clock.
Mike Greenberg says, we have, it's obviously is a boiling hot story here.
we've attempted to reach out to Bill O'Brien
to have him come on the show and talk about this.
And I don't think he's been on.
It's going to be like those were private conversations
between me and a player.
And I don't want to talk about anything out of context
but those are conversations between me and DeAndre.
I love DeAndre.
I got the utmost respect for DeAndre.
Great football player, best wide receiver in the league.
Unfortunately, business decisions had to be made
and we had to do what we thought was best for the team going forward.
And unfortunately, Deander Hopkins,
we had to move on from him and we wish him the best in Arizona.
That's exactly what he would say.
We said to what you're talking about Bill before Bill actually talked about it.
Right.
You know, that just shows you how good you are at that game
when you're actually answering things that we haven't even been asked yet.
Any more questions?
Okay, let's do this.
Fire up that sounder one quick.
Get to what you're talking about.
We might as well do this.
We're not going to believe it or not.
Drummo. What you draw my. Coach O'Brien.
Hey, coach. You traded. Some people are calling it a ham sandwich. Some people are saying 10 cents
in the dollar. Why didn't you get more trade value for DeAndre Hopkins than which you got from Arizona?
Well, first of all, we obviously got a lot more than ham sandwich. David Johnson is a fantastic
running back. He can run inside. He can run outside. Catch the football. Great blocker. Good teammate.
hard worker. He's going to be in the
film room. He's already just peppered
me so many questions about our system and we got
him in here and we're going to be working with him
and David Johnson's going to be great and
David Johnson's going to be a workhorse back when we
haven't really had that so far
a whole lot in my career and
we're looking forward to working with him and on top
of that, on top of one of the guy
who was one of the best running backs in the league
you get a second round pick so
I take issue with the fact
that if somebody wants to say we got a ham
sandwich sandwich, we got a pro bowl calibers,
a running back and we also got a second round
pick. So I think we did get some value
even though we did lose a great player
in DeAndre Hopkins. Here's what he actually said.
What you forgot
to mention is that he's been on the
radar for several years. Yeah, that's right.
Look, we looked at David back when he was
coming out of the combine and we absolutely loved the guy.
Unfortunately, we were unable to draft him.
Looked at him from afar. Obviously, he's had a ton of success in this league
and we're looking forward to having them in a Houston Texan uniform.
All right, one more before we wrap things up here on the Matt Thomas show on Sports Talk 790.
Coach O'Brien.
Excuse me, Coach.
Everybody ran the NFL.
Who are you?
I'm sorry, who are you?
I'm squirty reporter.
It's afraid to really talk too loud.
All right.
Are you, speak up, please.
Okay, every coach.
Every general manager in private circles is making fun of this trade.
Every member of the media is making fun of this trade.
What is your reaction to those that say that you got fleeced and that this was a terrible, terrible trade for you in the organization?
I can't even begin to tell you how much I don't worry about that.
We look inside and we look internally and we look at our options and people who want to comment on that.
That's fine.
That's their right.
But we know the conversations we had.
We did our vetting and we're happy with what we got back.
We're sad to lose.
Obviously, a lot of people are upset because DeAndre Hopkins, great receiver.
Love DeAndre Hopkins and really happy to have him here as a Houston Texan.
But unfortunately, it was the time to part ways, and we thought we got great value.
And if anybody else wants to say otherwise, that's their right, but that we don't pay attention to outside noise here.
Chows who we chose and we're happy with who we chose.
I don't think you guys really care what I say, just like I don't really care what you say.
Nick, before we go, we're staring at Bill O'Brien Jr. over here.
He knows more about Bill O'Brien than Bill O'Brien knows about Bill O'Brien.
You know what we've done?
We've made a monster out of you.
It's like the movie Young Frankenstein.
We went to the laboratory and created you.
Holy smokes.
You're a Bill O'Brien soundbite machine.
What the hell am I doing here?
Let's say how to Ronald before we wrap things up.
Hi, Ronald.
Hey, how y'all doing today, man?
Good, good.
All right, I just want to say that y'all might be giving the owner of the Texans a little bit too much of the hate because just by looking at him, I could be wrong, but he don't look like he knows a damn thing about football.
So I think he probably would agree that that was a great trade.
I could be wrong, but he don't look like he knows football.
That's a fair assessment.
I'll leave it at that.
Thank you, Ronald, for the phone call.
Hey, hey, hold up.
I want to say one more thing.
I say you just like the day and say you just got to get in there with the ox.
Got to get in there with the ox.
We don't get in there with the ox.
Why is Nolan Ryan talking about an ox?
Oh, a natural beef.
All right.
