By best, I don't know. I'm getting carried away. It's fine. Ohio State comes out and absolutely dominates Texas in the first half. To the point where MENCH you claimed on our IG live that you were thinking about calling me and saying, can we just take a show early? There's nothing else to see. Three fumbles from Texas.

One of them lost, an interception. There was a throw early to Cam Coleman. The transfer who comes in from Auburn, he's going to save the day. He's going to be that Superman that Arch needs a wide receiver because we can't trust the other guy, Ryan Wingo. Lays out, has it.

And when I say layout, it was a controlled layout. It wasn't one of those, oh, it would have been some spectacular catch. It was a good throw, actually. I agree. It pops up in the air, interception. That comes after they've got the freshman who fumbles on the throw behind the line of scrimmage. So now we've got a fumble and interception.

I think it was like 10 plays two turnover. 10 or 11 plays two turnovers for Texas. Nightmare. Literally not. Arch said in the post game he had nightmares about last year's game. Think about the nightmares. And then you have another play with Ryan Wingo. First half, Arch gets undercut, takes a shot,

delivers it, strikes, going to be a touchdown. Crawling back in it, dropped. Settle for a field goal. I'm already, I'm already notes on like, how is Sellers so advanced? Sellers, we talked about selling in the pre-show. Julian's saying so advanced, and we see Arch and all this talent.

And then the thing totally. shifts. So I'm going to throw to you, Medge, with that as the backdrop and the fact that Texas roars back and gets this win in the final seconds, really. What's your biggest takeaway here, man? There's a couple. I will just say this quickly to hit on what you said. I did say that maybe we should jump on early, but I also didn't feel like they were getting dominated. I just felt like the game got away from them. Like the way it went, it just kind of got away. from them and then it looked like it was just going to be they couldn't get themselves back into it. I'm going to go probably in a different direction than people might think.

I think this Texas offensive line is significantly better than it was last year and I think is going to be a factor for them this season and make them a serious contender. I think that Trevor Guzby is the best left tackle in the country. I think the right tackle who is a transfer is really talented in getting better. I thought that they're running game. I, you know, I still would take Ohio State's running backs over Texas's running backs, but they were physical, man. They were a lot more physical than I expected.

So to me, it was the offensive lines playing in this game, I think really helped them come back late. Was it their ability to punch it in late? Was it because of that physical play up front? I think there may be something that's getting overshadowed in this game. Yeah, it absolutely will be. But it doesn't mean that it's not the critical. And let's be honest, like Ohio State for a long time was a really, really good football team.

But until they became more physical up front and could run the football, Chip Kelly and that offense, that's when they finally broke through. And I feel like Texas, we've been talking about a long time, super talented, a lot of dudes, Texas high school football. But are they physical enough? And do they have that dog mentality? 100%. And like to score 21 points.

to be trailing 23 to 3 in the fourth quarter mensch, to have a captain of that ship and an offensive line capable of protecting that captain, and in certain situations being able to open up some holes that were necessary, that it tells me that this Texas team is different. I'll be honest with you, and I wish I had it on record, we're going to do this thing like McShay after dark because typically I get a little loopy at the end of shows

and I start spouting out and we're just going to call it last call. I was already thinking like, what's my last call going to be tonight? And I truly believe in the moment that while watching 23 to 3, and it was just despair for Texas, my thought was,

I picture a scenario in which we see these two teams, teams play again in the college football playoff and deep. 100%. You know what I mean? Yeah, 100%. Because they fumbled three times. The ball's bouncing everywhere. They're dropping passes.

Like everything that Murphy's law, everything that could go wrong went wrong. And yet they didn't feel totally out of this thing. I want to go in so many different directions. Can I maybe, yeah. Can I talk about like, look at you look for like pivot points in games. Like where can a game? Fern, right? And I was looking at this game, and Ohio State goes up, you know, they're up 10 nothing, but then they go for it. If you remember, they go forward on fourth down and Texas

stops them. And then Texas goes down and gets the field going. I'm like, okay, they've kind of stemmed the momentum. They're going to get back in this game. And then there was this just nightmare. But also, not to interrupt, but also to bookmark, maybe you don't leave points on the board on a road game against the top top five team. 100%. You could question that call. Like should they have just kicked the field goal? Now the crowd's back into it a little bit.

You go back down. Now it's a touchdown game. But then it swings again because I think it was Relique Brown that went to, he steps out of bounds on that third down catch instead of getting the first down. And then they call it the fourth down play is this, you know, trick like end around. and you give Ohio State great field position, and they capitalize with another Jeremiah Smith touchdown, and all of a sudden it's 23 going into the half.

Like another pivot point in this game. At that point, I was like that, there's these little points in a game that really can swing it. And the running back not picking up the first down there, Brown not picking up the first down, was a massive deal. And then they come out and they, Ohio State gets the ball, but they hold them to a field goal.

And they're basically just held on and held on, until momentum is a crazy thing in college football, man, and then it just shifted. And you could see it. They were making plays. All of a sudden, Jeremiah Smith, it's kind of a tough ball, but he has a drop all of a sudden.

A pass that's behind him usually makes that play. Julian's saying, who's looked like an absolute surgeon for most of the game, is now not playing as well. He's just not as sharp. So it was just, when that momentum shifted, man, you could just tell. You could see it.

Let me take you through the, my roller coaster tonight, right? Because right or wrong, I'm not exclusively watching it through the quarterback lens, but I'm certainly watching it through a quarterback heavy lens, right? And I'm starting to ask myself these questions, right? As we've seen some other interesting performances that we'll get to later, including your boy Mesta maker going off versus Dante Moore, who looks pedestrian today, right? So I'm starting to kind of just rehash or kind of re-rack like the whys.

And the obvious why do I have Arch Manning rated so much higher than Julian Sayan is 6-5, 230, mobility, stronger arm, like the physical traits, right, and what he can become and what I'm expecting the growth to be. And then I'm watching Julian Sayan, man, and I'm like, why not? Why not? Why can he be even a tick or two below Drew Breeze? Because I'm watching a young man whose efficiency is remarkable. Almost as if he's got like, you know, you go up against scout team and you know what defense are going to run sometimes. The play sheet.

The decisiveness in control. Mind you, at Texas, right, on the road, in complete control of this. game. Nothing's phasing him. Nothing. He knows where his eyes should be. He's going from one to two to three, typically hasn't had to get to two or three, or if he gets to two, then the answer's right there. But then he's delivering it with conviction, like falls out ripping it. It's there. And yes, Jeremiah Smith's on the back end and we'll get to him in a minute. But it looks easy for him. And then Arch comes on the field and he's got that Manning look on his face

and it just feels like a grind and he's holding onto the ball too long which we see not it's not all the time but it's sometimes and Manning's he missed the throw here hits a receiver balls up interception hits the receiver balls drop for a touchdown but there are even some other moments where it's like

you can feel it the pressure is it the pressure is it the expectation is that he's just not yet developed, but he's not advanced on certain snaps. Other snaps he appears to be, but there's an inconsistency to his game that makes you start to question the reality for me.

But all along, I'm like, I know this guy's more talented than the other guy, but this guy just makes the position look so much easier. And then we get to the second half. Okay, thank you. And then I'm like, I want to see because I want people to understand this. And I think they do.

But you live in Austin, Texas, and you're in this bubble, and nothing's bigger than this game. Nothing's bigger than this game nationally when you're talking about college football. But I'm talking about like, this is everything. And the pressure that's on you, and the pressure that's been on you from day one, and then you're forced to now go back and watch that tape you didn't want to watch. And he had to watch it because you've got to pick up tendencies.

you've got to learn you're going to pick up the mistakes what did they try to what did patricia try to do to me the first time in us the first time that was so successful what are the traps we can't fall into how do i archmanning be better this time and he said after the the broadcast i thought it was pretty insightful revealing yeah revealing i like he literally had nightmares during the week and i can actually relate to that i know that feeling i've literally woken up think like when you start the negative thoughts and about a game, you know? And so, like, it was haunting him to a certain degree. Now, now what you got, kid, that's what I wanted to see for March. What do you got in the second half? Because whatever you had in the first half, and it was a team effort to be

down 23 to 3 in the first half, the second half, can you rally it? And now nothing feels good or natural. You feel like, holy shit, it's going to be the same thing as last year. And I know what happened to me last year. I went in the tank for a few games. I started questioning whether I was good enough or not. I had self-doubt that I never had had before because, A, I'm a manning and B, I'm 6'5, I'm 2.30. I'm more talented. Maybe I didn't play the highest class of Texas football, as people like to point out when he's not doing well, get out of here. But maybe it was too easy for me. And so now you've got this first half of football that makes you're facing this reality and you come out and you and you this is one of those

moments in life man what's it going to be am i going to be the arch is this going to be the narrative am i going to play into it or am i going to find a way to rally these 10 other guys and we're going to figure out a way and he did it he did do it and i feel like texas a lot of times redating manning queen ewers before like texas a lot of times comes out flattened games like georgia games i can think of There's been a couple different results, but I can think of big games where Texas comes out flat, but then the pressure is kind of off of them because they're down 14, 17 points, whatever it is, and they crawl back in only to fail to execute it. Don't look at 2020, January of 2025 in the college football playoff.

The pick six, Captain Jack, right? But they had rallied back in. So then I'm starting to question, okay, he's doing it. They're doing it. Can he finish it? And he does. And now we get to wake up on Sunday morning. And it's like, holy fuck.

Arch had his signature moment that we've all been waiting for. And every doubter can kind of go eat it. Right. And Texas did something that Texas doesn't do very often. They manned up. They pushed Ohio State around in the trenches. And they were just the biggest, baddest dude on the block that night against number one Ohio State. agree.

I'll say this about Julian saying, though, that this is, I like Julian saying, I do. But I mean, if he's that great of a distributor of the ball and they're that deep on at receiver, he had 17 completions tonight, eight went to Jeremiah Smith, four went to Bo Jackson,

two went to Titan, Mason Williams, and then he had one each to the receivers. I mean, it wasn't, Jeremiah Smith, we should just say this right now, is on another planet in terms of his talent and his ability. He's an extraterrestrial.

So like when you had, it was used to be this whole thing and I'm not, I'm not saying this is an apples to apples comp and I'm almost hesitant to say it, but it does remind me of Johnny Manzella, Texas A&M when he had Mike Evans. And it was like, he's throwing to one of the greatest, like, 50, 50 guys, like the college games ever seen.

Like, Mike Evans was unbelievable in college. And it was like, oh, look at John. go like running around and don't get me wrong manzel was awesome in college but that being said mike evans had a monster part in that you know if if arch has jeremiah smith and this is what's interesting to me about this because i did think i'm going to say this this was another thing that popped out to me i know we're bumping around a little bit here get me back on the on the on the rails if you need to no cam coleman is an excellent wide receiver seeing him on the same field of jeremiah smith It was, okay, maybe.

Maybe it's not as close as we thought it was. Yeah. What's that? It's not as close to you thought. We can close the book on that chapter that we tried to start to write of like, hey, Julio Jones, A.J. Green. AJ Green. Maybe, you know, no.

It's, it's not that. And it's, and that's not. And I know that Cam Coleman had a tough, like, that pick and, like, I understand that. I'm still very high on Camp Coleman. Oh, no question. This is more of a thing about Jeremiah Smith and seeing what the same feel with that guy and saying,

oh, you are in a whole other level. I can honestly say this. And yeah, it's recency bias. That's fine. There's going to be some of that tonight. How could you not have a little bit? Yeah. Uncle Cal, Cowlishman, text me earlier today.

Somehow he got on this Randy Moss rant. He's like, were you evaluating? I was like, yeah, it was one of the first years. he's like was he the best ever like coming out in the draft like physically he's like I know he had like the off the field stuff and he fell and but like just talent wise

was he the best in your 26 years and I actually put some thought into it because I feel like these are the questions that people want to want answers to and it was like there's only two it was Randy but I know I feel like I wasn't even equipped to evaluate back then

I was going to ask you that because you know You're a young evaluator at that point. It was literally my second year. I believe it was my second year. It was Randy, but in a period of time where I feel good about, like I knew what I was evaluating, Calvin Johnson to me is the standard.

He's the bar from my time evaluating. But I would say Randy, and since I graduated college and started working in this industry, it was Randy and Calvin Johnson, tools-wise. I don't like where do we where do we stack Jeremiah Smith with that and what got me on this is honest to God I don't remember ever witnessing a half of football against competent competition

that was as dominant as that first half that we saw from Jeremiah Smith I want to throw up this graphic and my little unexpected right A little unexpected. For all of Texas' problems with Ohio State, the previous two losses, dating back to January of 2025, and then obviously last season in the opener, they bottled them up and appreciate Tucker putting this graphic together for us. Seven catches, 46 yards, no scores for Jeremiah Smith in those two games, right? He had, tonight, he had eight for 164 and a touchdown.

more catches tripled his receiving yards and had a touchdown and in that first half that I'm referencing it was six catches 110 yards and one catch he was on pace for 12, 220 and 2 and 2 against

Texas's defense pretty good defense so yeah I don't know where else to take it but but I would have to put it for me coming out in the I didn't know if I'd ever see another Calvin, you know? And now I'm watching him. And yeah, the cop with Julio Jones and all that.

But to see him dominate a game like that, but then to see it fall, to see it, meaning the offense start to sputter in the second half, we do have to give some credit. This is a new defense, man. Yeah. This is a Will Must champ defense that we're like, is it going to work?

They're so used to zone back off. And I did notice early in the game, there was a key play. It was a third down. And it was early in the game. It might have been the first touchdown drive for Ohio State. It was a key third down. I'm watching Colin Simmons, number one, I want to see if he's going to get home. It is a pass rusher.

He doesn't. I'm watching, what are we doing against Jeremiah Smith? They just dropped in the zone. It was like the old defense. They didn't double them. They didn't bracken. They didn't go high and low. then to go inside out.

And he had that crosser from the left side, deep crosser, left side to right, caught the ball, took the hit, bang. Big first down in that moment. But what wasn't working in the first half, we got to go back and watch the tape. Like, we're watching the games. A million things going along on. Right.

I can't wait to watch this tape, and there's a couple other tapes. I've got a busy week now all of a sudden. It felt like they were a little more physical at the line with him as the game progressed, which you, like, you have to do that with him. If you, if you can win at the line of scrimmage, you give yourself a chance. If you don't, you are in trouble. If you let him get off the line and he can get to his spots. I mean, he doesn't necessarily have to separate because of that frame and that strength.

He just needs to get to where he wants to go. It's almost like in the NBA, guys know where their shots are and they're getting to that part of the court. And it's just, if he gets to where he wants to go, you're in trouble. Colin Simmons, you all, we were watching on IG, live and you always want to see your clothes are close. And while he didn't get home on that last pass rush, he did draw the penalty. On his last real, like, true pass rush attempt.

Right. He drew the holding call on the right tackle. Right tackle, yeah. I got to go back and watch the tape on Colin Simmons. I thought he was kind of quiet for a little while. Then he had that big sack. I thought the defense of the interior defensive line got better as the game went on for Texas. I agree. Yeah.

I want to say this though. I want to say this, though. That Ohio State team is still one of the two or three best teams in the country, man. Oh, yeah. And there's something to losing a game you should have won and you know in your mind. You know, in Ohio State's mind, the players' minds, we know we're better than Texas. Texas. What just happened? We had them. Yeah, we had them. We had not just we had. Yeah, that was our game. We let them. Like that's that's on us.

That won't happen again. And for Ryan Day, like, you go back to like the Nick Saban stuff of like, I would much rather lose a, you know, a close game than, then when an ugly game where we have like self, kind of inflated, um, right, inflated ego about who we are. because this is that is this gives the gives ryan day the opera in his staff matt patricia who by the way is fucking genius man he's so good at what he does you you lose eight to the NFL draft you lose seven including three the top 11 picks the NFL draft and you're putting this product on the field again with a bunch of guys like i know who they are because it's my job and we when we like pre-scouting and all that But the nation doesn't, you know, these guys are kind of new to the whole deal, the vast majority of them. But for Ohio State, like, it is a nightmare to wake up on Sunday, right?

But I think that they'll wind up in the end being better for this. I truly do. Yeah. For Texas now, I'm in, pull up their schedule. And I don't want to do this. We're not doing the win-loss thing. for Texas, you hope this doesn't become a little bit of a trap. How do you handle success?

How do you handle success? This is the next challenge or opportunity, whatever way you want to frame it. But how do you handle success? Now you are, now that you've done this, what are you going to do moving forward? They have UTSA next week and then they're at Tennessee. Tennessee. So that would be an interesting one. and then they got Oklahoma in the rivalry game.

Ole Miss is towards the end of October. But look, man. I mean, you're just listed off three teams right there. Like, we're going to war. And I know Oklahoma did not go to that in just a minute, but you're going to war. Yeah. And I mean, I don't even know if I mentioned Florida.

Is this something we build off of or does this become a trapping, you know? Yeah. man man let's reflect for a second they're down 23 to 3 i honestly was like for some reason i always feel like oh here we go the archite mixie yeah we know you know archie you go to manning passing academy i'm pulling for all these guys but it's good to see the one guy who's had the most pressure and the most eyes on him and the most people quite frankly the wanting him to fail to actually shove it up everyone's ass for a minute, you know? Yeah, I'll say, listen,

Herbie played the position and it was a lot more about playing quarterback than I do. And I certainly don't think he's rooting for Arch to fail. But that was starting to irritate me tonight, man. Like, it just felt like there was a lot of Arch lowers his eyes and Arch isn't comfortable in the pocket. And Arch, you can just see that Arch isn't there yet. And it felt like the narrative was that Julian Sam, like you were kind of hinting at as a far more developed player. And then, like, you know, Julian San made that play. And he rolls to him.

right and throws back to the tight end across the field. And, you know, the comment was showing great poise again. And I was like, Julian Saints played. They showed a stat line at that point. And it was terrible for the second half. And the narrative was just that, you know, Arch was getting vastly outplayed in this game. And it just, it struck me because I do think there are people out there

who think that there's just this pro-arch faction of the media and these people that are really, I think there's just as much, you know, working against him. that are people are, you know, like anyone else who put on a pedestal in the society, we're ready to take him down, we're ready to knock him off of it. And I think there's that there's an element to that again. I don't know. I'm not saying that specifically about him,

but it just felt like the narrative tonight was, Arch is still not there yet. And it was like, dude, he just put that team on his back at the end and helped them win that game. We did a preview. And now it just dawned on me. Both guys are best suited to be the quarterbacks for their respective teams and their offenses, right? And we agreed on that.

Yep. Saying, here's the question. I'm just going to ask you. And I know my answer is why I'm asking the question. Could Julian have said that, could Julian saying have led that comeback? Identical circumstances.

I say yes, because I have a high opinion of him as a quarterback, but I would want Arch in that situation still. I tell you coming out of halftime. After watching Sayan and how, brilliant he wasn't the first half and how it was rolling you can swap quarterbacks do you want saying in the second half or do you want arch i still want arch because of his ability to extend and make plays with his feet i want arch yeah i want i wanted going into the game yeah that but that's what we talked about and if you put either of these quarterbacks in in just any given offense in the

country and remove ohio state remove texas from the equation i'm taking arch i think part of Part of what makes Sayan so great part. Don't get this twisted. I actually think I'm higher on saying. I know I'm higher on saying than a lot of NFL scouts, let's put that way. I think saying can be a good starter in the right system in the NFL. Not everyone in the league agrees with that. I look at Arch, though, and he gives you a chance because, A, I...

Herbie wasn't wrong, man. He was... He has this tendency to predeterminate. and lock on and stay with. And it gets him in trouble. It's why he threw that pick against Texas State the week before. We saw it a few times tonight.

But it doesn't mean that defines him. It defined him a lot more last year, especially in this game. What I'm starting to, I'm going to start pushing that people start to see what really defines Arch. that dude doesn't get rattled. He isn't as advanced as saying right now

in terms of pre-snap reads, the consistency, understanding where to go with the ball, and quite frankly, consistency of placing the football. He's not there yet with saying. But what saying doesn't have is this ability to carry a team. That's the difference for me. And we've seen it now several times. the second half of last year and obviously today.

There have been games where he just hasn't. He gets sometimes as a quarterback, you just got to reach down and grab them. Yeah. Onion check time, man. And it doesn't matter. Wrist is injured. Trainers are looking at it.

We're not protecting. Guys are dropping passes. Ball's falling loose everywhere. Like, Chris goes on it. I agree with what. I agree with you, him holding on the ball too long. And that's sack that he took when he could have just thrown the, or

the, yeah, I guess we'd call it sack. We could just throw in the ball out of bounds early in this game. And I was like, man, you can't do that. Just flip it out of bounds at that point. You know you're going down. Like, those are the kind of things that will drive you crazy. But let me ask you this. Compare his footwork, Arch's

footwork now, and his placement now, and his consistency now. Light years. Light years. Dude, the mostly, the most, I was honestly scared. last year. I was scared last year that for the young man. For the young man that

this doesn't look right. Something's wrong. I remember, I'll be honest with you. I texted Archie at one point and asked something going over the shoulder. Okay. Well, he always does that thing on the field too. I'm like, what are we doing here? He does the thing on the field. There were some shot put things.

It wasn't all jiving for me. It wasn't synchronized from a guy, from a young man who has had every opportunity to work with any coach he wants and has been around ball his whole life. It didn't all look. And it's, and, and the answer was like, there's a lot going on in here. Like, how does a human being get his first, get to start the first game of his first season as a full-time starter? And he's the number one overall pick. He's a He's a Heiserian Trophy winner.

And Texas is winning the national championship. And by the way, you get to start going to Columbus. And these all sound like, excuse me, I'm just saying, like, you're, you. asked the question what it was to what it is now, this is good enough and we'll only get, that's the thing with our project it forward. Project it forward is what I'm saying. That's the thing with arch. And that's why I'm not ruling out. He's coming back in 2027. Let's see how the season plays out. I've said that from the beginning. But two throws that really jump out, the Wingo touchdown and the Mosley pass that got them down to the three or two yard line, whatever it was. Yes. Those are quote-unquote.

quote, routine throws. You get the ball out in time, in rhythm. It should be an easy completion because of the play. And guess what? Tonight they were. Last year, they weren't always. You would see him make these plays in the second half against Mississippi State where he's ripping the ball.

And you would see him make these runs that were just incredible. It's the routine plays. Can he make the routine throws? And he did in a high pressure situation there. And that's what's so encouraging to me. And we can compare him to say, and we can compare him to whoever else you want in terms of where he is in his development. But I'm telling you right now, development's going well.

He is learning. He is getting better. And if he continues on this arc, then watch out. He's going to be the arch that all of the people who said he could be, the people that said he could be the first overall pick. This is the version of arch that they're talking about. We'll get to Michigan. I mean, the better game was Michigan, Oklahoma. Let's just get to the Mesta Maker Bowl for a second here. Oklahoma State. There's so many different directions, especially if you follow the show and you know that I was not a Mestemaker believer coming into this season, okay?

And then you got him doing this against Dante Moore, right? And then there's the whole element of like, what is Oregon as a football team? And so I'm going to start with you, Munch, because I'm assuming you have some strong opinions. And you can go Mestemaker. You can go Oregon. You can go Dante. You can go wherever you want.

But there's a few things that have to be addressed here. What's the first in your opinion? Well, I think you just hinted at it in that what is Oregon's identity? They're just a collection of talent now. I coach with a guy. He's the head coach of Holy Cross now. Dan Curran, we coached at Merrimack together. You used to talk about guys who could stop the bleeding.

And these are basically character guys. When things are going bad, who's going to be the guy who's going to stop the bleeding? I don't know who those guys are on Oregon right now. I don't know who the, you know, Dante Moore can be a different kind of leader. You don't have to be a rah-rah guy, but I don't know who the guys are like, I'm just going to refuse. I mean, who's the Akeem, the Messador on that team? Like, who's the guy who's like, I refuse to let this happen. And look, I'm just going to say it.

Right now, like, you could do whatever you want about Dante Moore. You could talk about the defensive line underperforming. you could talk about all of these things. The coaching's a problem. The coaching is a problem. When your team's not ready to go for the season opener, the coaching's a problem. When your team goes on the road after like eking out a win

against a Boise State team that's not nearly as good, the coaching's a problem. You have a new player caller for your team. Will Stein's in Kentucky. He's gone. Let's keep going for it on fourth down. Let's go 0 for five on our first fourth down attempts for the season. And then when there's almost seven minutes left in the game,

and the ball's on your own 33, and you're supposed to have a great defense. Let's go for it again and go 0 for six. What are we doing? I don't understand. Like, there is a coaching problem. And you could talk, again, both they were getting their asses kicked in the trenches. You got a running back losing a fumble late in this game. Can't have it.

There are so many things you can go over. But it starts with Dan Lannning. It starts at the top. And he said that after the game. He said as much. He said, I have to have them better prepared. But like I don't want to hear about weather delays. I don't want to hear about heat.

I don't want to hear about this clock. You know, they had to be up at 4 a.m. West Coast time to get ready for this game. Everyone has to do it. That's college football today, man. There is no reason that Oregon should lose this game. And no offense to Oklahoma State, who apparently is doing everything. And Drew Messemaker is a talented quarterback.

He's inconsistent, but you can see what he could do when he's playing well, when he's got on a heater. But this is an Oregon thing. And I, like, they, we talked about them being the best. I thought they were going to win the national championship this year. They're not even, they're not even in the same conversation as Ohio State and Indiana. They're the third best team in the Big Ten. Maybe.

Maybe. And that's only if they can get like this thing turned around, which they can because they have so much talent. But it's got to start happening now. You said a lot there. I mean, am I wrong? I mean, you know, I'm a Dan Laning fan. But I, I was just looking at. I wanted to make sure Iowa put away Iowa State in a beautiful 16 to 13 game before I made the point that maybe they're the fourth best behind Iowa.

And don't forget USC and what we've seen. Well, they're in that group now, right? They've gone from the Ohio State Indiana bucket. Right. There's USC, Michigan. I think Michigan's in their conversation with them. That was unthinkable at the beginning of the season. Like USC, Michigan, Iowa, I think all of those teams.

that's kind of where Oregon is now. Massive day for Drew Mestamaker. 75-yard touchdown run. I didn't know that guy could run 75 yards. He, like, this is a dream day for a young, like, forget their scouting element of it, and we have plenty of time to break down Drew Mestamaker. And there's some really promising things that we've seen.

And you can go as long as you want on Mestamaker. I'm not like poo-pooing any of it. he finishes the day 26 of 43 for 317 yard two touchdowns two interceptions and he ran for 109 on 6 carries okay and and he did it like helicopter in the air doing his best mendos a 75-yard touchdown run outrunning oregon's secondary i thought that Oregon secondary was supposed to be one the best in the what are we like what what are we doing um but but the story to of he was a backup high school quarterback and North Texas

finally gets to play and takes off and now he gets a shot at Oklahoma State and they lose their first game, man. And it was like so easy to write up. Yeah, good story, but there's some people in the league who absolutely believe that this guy can develop into a first round draft pick.

And I want to remind everyone, it probably won't because, and I had a scout text me tonight. I'll give you the exact, something about volume. He's like, volume isn't there. Right. Volume tells me he, like, basically the league needs him to play another year in college football. He just hasn't played the position enough in order for him to be in the best position

to have success in the league. So this is a story we can talk about for this year and most likely for next year, especially given the depth of talent of quarterback this year. I do find it interesting that Pete Thamillard. I guess maybe released it today. I think I saw honestly in the background a clip of game day where he does this thing.

We talk about it every year. It's awesome. I love Pete. We've had Pete on many times in the show. I'm glad you're bringing this up. I pulled 25 evaluators in the NFL who's the projected number one, QB1 for 2027. He does this every year. It's always a fun thing to comment on and react to. I wonder after today how much this would change.

Yeah, it was published today, September 12. Dante Moore 14. Arch Manning seven votes for QB1. Lenora Sellers 2. Sam Levitt won. C.J. Carr won. Okay? Not even close, by the way.

Now, again, again, I'm, I'm assuming he's polling people in the summer and then maybe into the first week of the season. I'm not exactly sure. I can text Pete and find out. But I do start to question. There's more to playing quarterback than just being the most,

the best pure pocket passer. And so, like, and I saw, I saw those two consecutive throws that Dante made today. It was a real good NFL all throw on blanking now. It was coming back to his there was a Corian Moore touchdown and then and then the very next

yes in the very next throw was Jacorian Moore which is just yeah like like a tear drop from from God down through the clouds like and we all know he's great and he's going to be a very very high draft pick and he should be a very very good pro but you do

what you do by coming back for this last year is two things one you actually put yourself into the, like, adversity is a great thing for you. Anything that you go through this last year will make you better for next year. But you also run the risk of exposing some warts. Now, these aren't warts like Klubnick, Nussmeyer with the injuries. And like, these are fine-tuned warts, you know, where you start to, we got to really start

picking. And you come back for another year and Archer is just in the second year as a start. Well, we got more undone. So I don't know. But I'm watching him, Dante Moore, and MENSA hasn't really played any. But I loved Mentsa's tape. And I'm wondering why is there no Dary and Mentsa on here?

so like, basically, we're basically basically this off of TV tape and stats. TV statement, tape and stats. And like, I'm not saying that Dante Moore, I have the same sense of you that he is losing his grip on that number one spot. I want you. I'm not even saying he's losing his grip.

I'm just trying to, I'm trying to pick my spots when the conversation makes sense. But enough of that bullshit. But don't forget when we did it in the summer before anyone played a game this year, I said, I don't think, and you totally agreed with me. And I think you actually cut me off before I finished my sentence. I don't know that there's that big of a difference between Mensa and Dante Moore. Yeah. We said it.

And we went back and forth on all the reasons why. And so now we get through two games, and one guy is putting up record-setting numbers against nobody. And another guy doesn't look great, and his team looks like shit. And unless, he completed 48.3% of his passes today for 191 yards and two touchdowns, no intercept. I don't give a shit about that.

I do start to wonder, like, there's the ultimate captain that goes down with the ship and that's the head coach. But within the ranks, there's a sergeant general. Pardon me for not understanding that I actually, I don't mean to disrespect anybody. There is one in charge underneath. Right. I don't know what is either, but I get what you're saying. There's a structure and a hierarchy of how this is supposed to work.

Right. And the next guy that's got to go down with the ship is got to be the corner. quarterback. And from that position, we need a little bit more of what we saw for March in the second half. And, and, yeah, I don't know. Like, even watching I Amaliava at UCLA sometimes, I'm like, man, that guy, like, there's something to him and sellers the way he rallies his team, but nothing going.

You know, that's the part I'm missing with Dante. Does he mean he's not our number one? one rated quarterback. No. No, I'm just saying like this next year gives us an opportunity. Now I want to see how he rebounds and like what the reaction is. And you grow from these moments, right? Right. And you can have this conversation on the center tonight. I think it's okay to say that, but then you have to revisit it after you watch the tape.

QB1 for this vaunted historic 2027 class has never been more of an open field for me than it is today. And it only, I only sparked the, this conversation was sparked by some of the play on the field, but also by this is when FAML's releasing the 25 evaluators and what their thoughts were. I don't see a race that's 14 Dante Moore, seven Arch Manning, two Lenora Sellers, one each for Levin' and Carr with no mention of Darien Mensa.

Yeah. Okay. I hear you. That's my last call. I just want to pull this up. we're closer to we're starting we're closer to the start line than we are the finish and that seems obvious because we're in week two but i don't want people to misconstrue this this qb one race or forget even qb1 like who you're going to grade the highest in this class um based off of what it

was coming into the year i think it's more wide open than people think nationally you're the only thing that's interesting about that because this is what I wanted to pull up. I don't think we've been pretty clear that Dante Moore has been the top quarterback on our board coming into the season. We were pretty clear that we thought Dante Moore could be the first overall pick last year until I think Mendoza really pulled away in the playoffs. But there was a conversation at one point. But like I'm just looking at your grades now and I don't want to give too much away. There are six quarterbacks separated by two points. Yes.

So, I mean, there it is, it's always been a tight race. Like, we're not, we've, we've talked at length about how good this quarterback group is. So the fact that some of them are going to start jockeying and moving ahead and some are going to be slipping behind all that. I think that's all healthy, but we won't, you're right. This is the beginning of the process. Let's not overreact. Like, I, look, I just, you knew I was going to have to say something about it. Sam Levitt last week looked like he was going to win the Heisman,

and he's going to be the best quarterback, and he's going to be the first guy to go, he's going to go first overall. And tonight he goes against Louisiana Tech. And look, he played better, and he ran for three touchdowns. I understand that. He also threw three picks,

including a hundred yards of six. Hey, Tucker, Tucker, throw up those stats for me. Thanks. So, let's see, Leap, did he have thrown? 38, 344, four touchdowns through. No, three rushing touchdowns, though, one throwing touchdown. And I'll, and I'll, I'll, I'll give you a,

I'll give you another scout. You ready? Here we go. But you get my point, right? This is going to be a little bit of a roller coaster. And that's because it is so tight. This is a good line. Gosh.

Someone said to your text? Yeah, going back and forth all day with a bunch of different folks. I was busting balls about gay backus this week because this individual didn't see it. And it was telling me to protect my career. You can't let him sniff anywhere in the top 30. Messing around, going back and forth, you know? Yeah.

And his response was, let's see how the season plays out. And then it fast forward to today. And it's, it was, it was, What do you say about Leavitt? He had a... Oh, if you want to get off the Leavitt train, let me know. Same for Mateer, been telling you. And I wrote back, shut up.

I said, it's a long season with Leavitt. Because Mattier is a different story. We're about to get to that. And he wrote... I was like, but like, he's like, oh, so now it's a long season, huh? And I wrote back Long season. Messing with him. same applies, long season.

And he's like, oh, now it's a long season. And I was like, but I deserve it right now on Leavitt. Like basically I cool it. And he's like, he writes back, he goes, this ain't a hobby. It's a great line. This ain't a hobby. Anyway. So that was, that was, that was, it's interesting to all these different opinions, right?

Yeah. Mature, though, as we transition to Oklahoma and, and in Michigan. And my gosh, what a story. Unbelievable. You called this by the way. One extra sec.

Tyler Shuck, 2.0. We got our hands full, man. Arizona State kid put up some numbers. There's the Minnesota kids doing some things. Like, they're, dude, they're all over the place. But John Matier, remember I said this summer, I

hesitated to even bring up the the mechanics and all of that because I've been doing this too long and when the bullets start to fly and I'm not saying it's a disaster but I'm saying it's not how many times did he miss high today? Yeah, it's a problem.

So this can be fixed but I'll also tell you this about Mateer if I've got to go into an alley and fight off of the few dudes that are bigger and badder than me and I get one quarterback to pick I'm taking that son of a bitch. Do you see the helicopter hit?

you got twisted in the air and just, I mean, unbelievable. But from a passing development standpoint, there's been a regression since Washington State. Since the top injury, let's be honest. There's two conversations here. There's Oklahoma's offense and then there's John Matira as an NFL draft prospect. And I think if we're going to not. Go ahead. Sorry.

I was going to say, if we're going to knock out the Mateer conversation right now, it's this is why he's not in the, in the, top group. This is why he's considered a farther down the board prospect, wherever that might be. It's just because the accuracy is just so inconsistent. But that being said, he cannot be your top rusher. They need to get a run game going. And their offensive line could not block three guys today. They could not handle a three-man rush. So as much as we can, you know, John McKear needs to be better and more accurate, he's not the real problem there. That offensive line, that group up front has to play a lot better for them to be competitive against against good teams.

Was there a team that had more of a bunker mentality and was there a better coach for it than Michigan with Kyle Wood? Apparently. Apparently not. And you know what? Sometimes your job as the leader as that captain of the ship is to know what button to press at the right time. And I get news for folks out there.

We live in NIL and in player quarterback, entitlement has been going on long before. And guys were getting paid a lot of money before. Not this kind of money, but they were getting paid before in college football. We all know that. My point in saying all of this is sometimes you, like parenting, the kind parenting when you talk through things and you give options and all that stuff, sometimes when you spoil the young man so much and everything.

been given to him, including God gifting him with some physical tools that very few on this planet have been gifted. Sometimes it's time to pull the rug from underneath and be like, but how are you going to do it? I would actually substitute young man for, I would substitute roster for a young man, but he was specifically talking about Bryce Underwood this week. I get it. But I think Bryce Underwood was called out. You got to understand.

Bryce Underwood's been the best athlete to step on a field, a court, or wherever he's stepped on his entire life. He's been on this path to collect this money from Michigan, $12 million. He's been glorified, but everywhere he goes, he's Bryce Underwood, right? No one has ever done to Bryce Underwood, what was done to Bryce Underwood this week. And it was in a very simple. non-threatening but threatening manner when Winningham says starting job is not infinite. Right.

You got to earn that position every day, man. Every day. Rents do every day. Is that what they say or something like that? Yeah. It was brilliant. It was brilliant. And the national media is, oh, my gosh, is this going to happen?

and it's falling apart at Michigan. And behind closed doors, it's, I finally get the young man's attention. Can we go to work? Because it's not your job. You aren't anointed. You are not a king. This is a production-based business,

and you are now part of the business because you're collecting $12 million. So let's go to work. And he comes out, and you're not going to change his mechanics or his ball placement and all that overnight. But my gosh, this is a different Bryce Underwood than we've ever seen.

This is a Bryce Underwood that had ownership of this team and his decisions. And it was a Bryce Underwood that showed he's going to miss some targets. He's going to, but they showed my decisions have consequences and I better start being accountable for him. And in doing that, it allowed them to run the football more because they didn't possess the ball more. It allowed them to feature some other players. It allowed their defense to have rest. And to come out in a fair fight, machete, hey, boys, bring a machete to a machete fight. And Michigan's defense for the last year and change have been butterknife to a machete fight.

And so we now see John Henry Daly and we see Dom Nichols. Man, that's a good pair. That is a good duo on the edge, man. Those two are trouble. We'll see an NFL draft near you. Yeah, I just, it was, it was. pretty cool to watch. It was pretty cool to watch today. What one mayor can do?

Jair Hill. The corner is wildly in the game. But he's been so up and down. And then all of a sudden, 24-yard pick to set him up for the game-winning touchdown. It was actually really nice to see him make a play because I think he's been, he's one of those players that's put under a microscope a little bit because of how talented he is. I mean, he's got length. He's got speed. He's a guy that can play on Sundays, but hasn't had the tape. He made an awesome play, awesome play, to, like, really give Michigan that win to set him up for the win.

And what Underwood realized to... Underwood realized something today, it's an important lesson to learn. Sometimes it's not about you and what you can do. Sometimes it's about what... I've listened to someone recently who was talking about quarterback, like distributing. Sometimes the position is about being a playmaker.

Sometimes it requires you to be a playmaker, but fun... It was not to lead the quarter... Andrew Luck. Andrew Luck was saying it, yeah. Andrew Luck was saying this. Yeah. But fundamentally, the quarterback position is about distribution.

It's about you. It's not about you. That's right. It was our conversation with Andrew Luck, and I thought it was brilliant at the time. And it just came back to me. So what happened today was they went with defense, edge pressure, big plays here and there from the secondary, a quarterback who runs the ball and grinds it when they need to get it.

And distribution. and key moments, and most importantly, the lesson he learned today. If I can do all these things, let the other guy be the asshole. Yeah. Let the other quarterback go be the guy who makes that beat. Yes. Right? Yeah.

I mean, there is, listen, Oregon is a far more talented team, but Michigan has an identity. And I think that makes them a better football team right now. They know who they are. they have an identity I don't know what Oregon is I have no idea I don't either I know Oklahoma's identity

I just don't know if it's enough but we'll see they'll rebound from this I don't think their defense is quite as strong but they'll get there as they have been Mateer's going to be a fascinating case study to see how does he respond

as a passer will we ever get to see the old Mateer slinging it all over the yard. I think you got to let him do his thing, I think, by the way. There's, there's, I mean, again, two different conversations, John Mateer as the prospect, you want him to become, start working on more of the pocket stuff and being on time and operate within the offense.

But I think if Oklahoma really wants to win and get the most out of him, it's just got to be the John Mateer show and you're going to live and die with some of these force throws. and hopefully he makes enough plays for you guys to go on a run. I think we're learning about Texas A&M. I thought that that was a pretty good second half. I learned a lot about Alabama today. Man, but I think you did too. I'm starting to like that Alabama team.

Yeah, and what they can be when the freshman quarterback starts to figure out some of the Underwood stuff that we're talking about. That defense played with a physical edge in the second half that I don't remember seeing at all last year. Yeah. Like that was, they were. Violence. Yeah.

Violence. And, and, and, and, um, and 11 guys playing for the 10 other brothers. Yeah. That was, that was different. I was worried. I was worried about DeBoer in this, in this regime in Alabama following Sabin. I'm not saying I'm not. And like, it's over and they're going to be, but this is why they hired them.
