Starting point is 00:01:32 It was not pretty from John Mateer. It just wasn't. He actually missed more throws than I thought. I thought there were times where like fast balls underneath throws he made things hard on himself at times there's always going to be two
Starting point is 00:01:57 three four throws a game where it's like God I just wish he would kind of drill in some footwork and find what like the norm rather than everything being the norm being like the crazy being the norm but the great was great yeah like
Starting point is 00:02:15 like that rail shot to Birx where he snuck a foot in. The first drive, the two explosive passes on the first drive to come out. How about that throw and catch to the tight end, Can it? Awesome. Canick has been one of my favorite players this year, man. He's come out of nowhere. Yeah, and that flea flicker, he kind of didn't run through it, but Materia kind of overshot him late in the game.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Yeah. Can I just say something? Yeah. if I'm an Oklahoma fan and I know you like Mateer and you're getting a little excited about him now, I want to climb to the screen and punch you in the face for saying
Starting point is 00:02:53 it wasn't pretty. I mean, 19 carries 74 yards, two touchdowns. 270 yards. Stop for an Oklahoma team coming off a horrific season. Now they think they have their quarterback. I don't care if it was pretty or not.
Starting point is 00:03:08 It was awesome. Normally what happens is when someone starts with the negative and they've been hyping up Mateer all summer, and they've been hyping up Matur all season. And they came on and did something, the social clip that did went almost viral, like, Matier's going to be the face of college football.
Starting point is 00:03:28 He's the guy in college football. Normally, someone like you mentioned would say McShay's probably going to finish with, but just celebrate. No butts. Okay. How awesome was Mateer? I love that,
Starting point is 00:03:43 First of all, Dionne Burks had a really nice night. And Kahnick did a couple of nice things. The other receivers were kind of hit and miss. I want people to remember this, though, when they, when they are kind of unraveling this whole game, that Michigan defense, and I don't know they lost a few guys of the league, that's a damn good group. Still a good group. You said it last week. I'm watching the tape.
Starting point is 00:04:08 I agree. They, like, that is a tough team. And so what happened was Oklahoma realized it. And by the way, Jade Nott, like I love Nagy. And he didn't lie. And the reports from Thamel, like, no one's lying. He was out there. And like, but he, I don't even, the final numbers.
Starting point is 00:04:30 I looked it up at one point. Well, the most notable play he had was the muffed kickoff return. That's what you remember the most from this game. He had four carries for nine yards. And but Blaylock, Torrey Blaylock, who's who appears. to be at this moment. And Ott remember coming off the shoulder injury, didn't play, only had one carry negative two yards in the first game.
Starting point is 00:04:49 He now has through two games, five carries, Mench. But I thought to myself, like, well, did he re-injure? Did he get out there? And maybe he's like very limited. But then they put him in on that kickoff return after they had a situation earlier in the game. And, and Ott Muff, that kickoff return.
Starting point is 00:05:07 And so, like, clearly he's healthy enough to do some things. What's going on? Yeah. What's going on? Yeah. So, like, if we're looking at Oklahoma, big picture down the road, they've got to find a sustainable,
Starting point is 00:05:22 reliable run game, right? But this also is a Michigan team that prides itself. I'm a Wink Martindale guy. He's actually a friend of the show, by the way, if you didn't know. Oh, that's awesome. No, I didn't know that.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Wink is the man, but he's also, like, just because I like him as a guy, doesn't mean he's great at his job. Like, Google him, you know? So that defense is going to be top 10, worst top 15 in the country this year. And they only gave up 24. They realized, like, our receivers aren't uncovering the way we want outside of Berks at times. Michigan started to dial up some more pressures as they made adjustments.
Starting point is 00:06:06 I thought that's a great adjustment. The pressure stuff? Yeah, because it was making the quarterback. runs harder. It was forcing him to get rid of the ball. I think it was almost counterintuitive for me because I thought the receivers were playing well in the first half and I didn't want to looking at that. I was like, I don't know if you want to play man against these guys, but it was the right move playing, playing aggressive and playing man behind it and just trying to get after Matera as much as possible. Now, Mattier burned him a couple times with it, but that's what
Starting point is 00:06:32 Mateer is going to do. I mean, when he shakes off a sack and throws a ball down the right side, I mean, it's just some of the stuff that he can do, you just have to live with. He's just going to make that play every once in a while. His competitiveness, I've said this to you before, Mention, I'm looking something up real quick. It's outrageous. I'm telling you, like,
Starting point is 00:06:55 I'm not, there's no, you can't substantiate, you can't, like, there's nothing tangible. But I refuse to believe there's a human being in playing college football that is like more competitive and will lay it on line more than this guy for whatever that is. And I'm looking through my notes. There was a play from last year where I was like, oh, this guy's different.
Starting point is 00:07:24 This guy's different. He was, they were up by like 20 points in a game. Oh, here it is. 3416, Texas Tech game last year. 7.54 remaining in the fourth quarter, okay? I had to look up the time code This play is burned into my mind He takes off running gets
Starting point is 00:07:48 Pass No one's open Takes off gets to the second level That play would have given him a first down Like you saw several times tonight The sidelines right there It's your friend You don't need the two three extra yards
Starting point is 00:08:06 You're the starting quarterback We need to keep you healthy Those guys were in Amazing Blue, like, they hit hard. He's not going to do it unless he's literally forced out of bounds. This play, though, they're up 34 to 16 in this game, and it's 754 midway through the fourth quarter. He cuts, instead of going out of bounds, cuts back inside, up the left rail, the left sideline.
Starting point is 00:08:33 Not only, like, then extends it another like 20 yards down inside the 10, as he approaches the 10-yard lines, there's two defenders converging. You know what a sane human being does mention? When you're up 3416, midway through the fourth quarter, you've already taken it for the first down inside the 10. A sane human being slides. Instead, he starts looking back in a full sprint, and the dude runs in the 4-4s, I'm convinced.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Worst case, 4-5. I feel like it gets lower every time you talk about him. Fine. Four or fives. He can run. But he's sprinting towards the goal line as these two guys are coming in to try to kill him. And he does this and then this. And he tries to stiff arm both of them.
Starting point is 00:09:22 And they drag him down about the two. That's when I was like, oh, this guy's built different. This guy's built different. And he's also literally, he's also literally built different. I mean, you've talked about this a lot. They talked about it on the broadcast tonight. it takes one look at the dude to see how thick his lower body is and how he's uniquely built to take a pounding as a runner remember ironhead haman shots yeah remember iron head he was low
Starting point is 00:09:50 hillis like if you saw if you saw him in someone like put a like a blind over from waist up right you just saw from like quads down you'd be like he's a fullback right he's a mashing 200 40 pound fullback or tailback. I agree. So it does beg the question and we're not going to have the answer right now, but I'm already getting texts from like Breer and other people. I just got a text from him. That's why it's fresh in my mind.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Albert Breer, a good friend. It's up with Mateer. Yeah. People only text us if they, you know, in moments like that, like, what are you hearing? What do you think? What are your thought? You know. I'm going to be really interesting.
Starting point is 00:10:46 What are you thinking? Oh, I don't care what I'm hearing. I'm thinking everything that I thought coming in. Except remember we said. And where's the schedule? What did we say, Munch? He put himself in a position. He put himself in a spot.
Starting point is 00:11:03 And he purposely put himself in this spot where it's kind of the F you to everybody. Go ahead. You got it? Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, starting on October 11th. Not to mention an Auburn team that I think that... Yeah, they look good. People overlook, yeah. And you saw what Baylor did.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Right, then we just make that Auburn win even more impressive, right? Yep. So, yeah, that's, I mean, that's a tough road. I mean, that's a... If you play at a high level over that stretch, I mean, it's going to be hard. Oh, by the way, I missed LSU at the end. So he still got LSU too. Yeah, you see how good that defense was for LSU?
Starting point is 00:11:46 Yes. And maybe Clemson is not quite as good as we thought. But I would never say that. No, I know that. I'm just sort of. But this is a class now with Garrett Nussmeyer, with potentially Lenora Sellers, with Cade Clubnik.
Starting point is 00:12:04 And I'm not going in order here. I'm just spitballing. With Carson Beck rising, with Fernando Mendoza, who were excited to see when Indiana starts playing competitive football with Sam Levitt, who it appears that they just dropped a game, with Drew Aller that some people like more than others,
Starting point is 00:12:22 but a lot of people in and around the league seem to think he could be a first rounder. What are your boy in Baylor? You didn't even mention him yet. Sawyer Robertson. I'm sorry. Robertson. No, we'll get to him in a minute.
Starting point is 00:12:38 I'm just saying. I know, but you should mention him in this class. I am. Okay. All right. I am. He was next up. Make sure you get your guy in.
Starting point is 00:12:46 Thank you. It's just interesting because he is so different than the rest, but he's not all that different from a Kyler Murray coming out, from Baker Mayfield coming out. These are the guys that are like, you know, I'm going to be fascinated. I'm going to be fascinated to see when we get seasons done. and NFL teams and coaches and everyone starts
Starting point is 00:13:18 and he's down in Mobile, I'm assuming, for the senior bowl. What's that going to be like? Because remember, I want to remind everybody. Myself included, I hadn't done enough. I hadn't done enough work because we were starting to show and all that on Jackson Dart. Jackson Dart went down there.
Starting point is 00:13:37 And I had the conversation with a head coach that wound up drafting him that I don't know that you're going to you're definitely not going to take him at five is what I said I don't know where you're going to get him because I do think he might wind up going in the first round not convinced of it right now but I don't know how you'll get him but I'd love to see you coaching him because I think it's a perfect fit and it turned out to be true with Brian Daible and that's a conversation I mean you saw me have with Brian Ryan, and I never shared that before, but here we are and what's it matter, right? And it worked out exactly like that.
Starting point is 00:14:23 Can't take him at five in this class. There's too many good players. But I'd love to see you find a way to get them. That's what they did. And that was in January. Okay. Yeah, it was Masterclass. I'll be really interested to see where we are with Mateer, because this guy's special.
Starting point is 00:14:38 He's a competitor. You talk to Nagy and other people in Oklahoma, like the work, the grind, it's real. It's not phony. you see the joy on his face, you see the teammates love him, you see the mobility that he has, you see the arm and the torque and the ability to drive the ball. It's just a, what's different is he's so wild. Can you tame that horse?
Starting point is 00:15:03 Do you know what I mean? I do. I know exactly what you're saying. I mean, I don't know if I'd put it that way. That's an interesting way of putting it, but still, I get exactly what you're saying. You've got to find a way to tame that horse. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:14 A lot of people, including myself, said, a lot of the same things about Mahol. Without the tricky part about all of that is we talked about this with other quarterbacks, you have to find a way to do it without preventing him from being himself. He still has to have that element of his game. He's always
Starting point is 00:15:30 going to have to have a little bit of danger to him because if he's not, then he's not mater. He's not that kid anymore. He's not that player anymore. So you're going to want to, you know, find that bad. Well, they tried to rob that of Baker Mayfield in Cleveland. Yes. Even after
Starting point is 00:15:45 He brought him to the playoffs. And then he had to go to McVeigh in a last-minute deal to start and learn the playbook on like Wednesday or Thursday before a Sunday game. But McShan let him play. So it's going to be as much about someone seeing all the good and not trying to make you something that you're not in the NFL. He's going to be fascinated. But I don't know how you wake up on Sunday
Starting point is 00:16:14 and look at the college football landscape now. Okay. And if you close your eyes and you think about who are the guys, the stars, the guys you absolutely have to play, see the guys that like are on the billboard. If we were to do a college football billboard in Manhattan right now, Times Square, re-rack the NCAA,
Starting point is 00:16:40 25. Who are the three guys? guys you're putting on the cover or on that billboard. It might be Jeremiah Smith, Nussmeier, and Meteer. Those are the three I would say right now. No question. Really? Yeah. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:17:00 Absolutely. Okay. Makes a little sense to me. I'm not part of like a PR in marketing and maybe Underwood still would and maybe Arch absolutely would be. Sorry. Arch would be. But like I'm talking after now seeing two weeks of football. who are the guys that you believe in the most?
Starting point is 00:17:19 I'm not even talking marketing appeal. I'm talking like, who are the guys right now? Those are my three. I would put him over Arch. I think has a super bright future, but those are the three right now. I agree. And so that's what I was hoping this game would do for him
Starting point is 00:17:36 because I have so much respect for him for the way John Matere plays this game. And I'm glad that it turned out this way. What else jumped out at you in this game before we move on? The lines, I think, are interesting because I think the offensive line, I think Matera made a bunch of plays. They didn't run the ball that well. I think Mattier made a bunch of plays in spite of his offensive line play at times. The offensive line is a concern, but I'll say this.
Starting point is 00:18:00 I was not, I knew Oklahoma was talented up front defensively. I was not overly impressed with their play when I went back and watched the tape last week. And we'll see how I feel after I watched the tape this week. But it seems to me that someone let a fire under their ass this week because they look like they were a different, unit up front. Those defensive tackles looked as good as advertised. I mean, Marvin Jones Jr.,
Starting point is 00:18:23 who I liked coming into the year, looked real good. I just thought that that defensive front maybe overlooked the opponent last week, and Venables brought them in and sat down when they watched the film and corrections were made and lessons were taught, and they came out and played like a different group,
Starting point is 00:18:40 like the group that we thought we were going to see coming out, coming into the season. So that's really encouraging for Oklahoma. I do think the run game and the offensive line play, it's still something to keep an eye on and something they could catch up with them.
Starting point is 00:18:53 Yeah, you got the right man of the job for Oklahoma's offensive line. And I thought that they played better in the first half, truly. Even in the first quarter than they did in the second half, the offensive line, but Beedenbow, beatenbo is the, like,
Starting point is 00:19:10 he's the, the crem's the guy. Yeah, he's one of the best, man. So, So, yeah, what do you think on Underwood, honestly? I'm excited to see what he does. I thought it was they, at some point, you got to let him play. You got to let him go do his thing. And I thought that there was times that they moved the pocket with him a little bit.
Starting point is 00:19:31 And when they did, you got to see him do his thing. Obviously, Venables, I mean, that is a real learning moment for a young quarterback when you go and you play Brent Venables in Norman or, you know, when they, you had to go. to Clemson to play him back in the day. That is a tough task for any quarterback, let alone one who's, what is he, 18 or 19? I mean, that's just a tough task, but I love the talent, man. You see the flashes of the talent. I'd like to see them use him as a more as a runner. I don't know why they're not doing that yet.
Starting point is 00:20:02 I don't know if there's a concern. Maybe they're just trying to protect him. But I felt like they could have maybe put him in a better position to succeed instead of being so concerned about protecting him, both as a decision maker and as physically. but I can't wait to watch his kid develop. I think it's going to be he's going to be awesome. I think what he is in game five and six is totally different from what we saw tonight.
Starting point is 00:20:30 I think that there's this tug of war of for Sherrod Moore, for Chip Lindsay. It's not easy, man. It's not. We say, by the way, I hold Sark in the highest regard. The Manning family obviously does
Starting point is 00:20:46 too. I didn't. And we saw with Ohio State and it actually was effective for Ohio State in that first game against Texas of letting, letting this young guy, this inexperienced guy, go be what made him such a high recruit. But like pulling you back to the middle of, but we're so talented everywhere else. Let's not put him in a spot where he's going to start to lose confidence or things fall apart because he is inexperienced, right? Right. And I think what we saw that tug of, it was like, all night long, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:21 I think when you get past central Michigan and if they can get a win at Nebraska and a win versus Wisconsin, I think what we start to see against Wisconsin and then that trip to USC, which is looming, and I've been trying to tell people, USC's better than people think. We'll see how that goes.
Starting point is 00:21:42 I think Michigan, worst case, I can't envision anything worse than going to Ohio State on November 29th for that rivalry game or having Ohio State come to them, I should say, right? Yeah. They're eight and three. Yeah, I agree. Worst case.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Central Michigan's a win. They should win at Nebraska. Wisconsin at home should be a win. And I don't like doing this whole. But like USC, I could see that being a loss or even a Washington team, like one of those two. but then you got Michigan State, Purdue, Northwestern, Maryland. Like they're going to go in there on a roll.
Starting point is 00:22:29 And if they only drop, let's say they drop one. But there's also Michigan fans. It's like a legitimate, I'm looking at the legitimate chance. If they get to Underwood in the next two games, Central Michigan, Nebraska, three games, Wisconsin, if they get them to a level that I think that they actually can, they could go in as a 10-1 team to Ohio State with the Big Ten title on the line, unless Penn State runs it.
Starting point is 00:22:58 Yeah, it's interesting to see what's going to happen with it. The big chance to play in the Big Ten championship. Right. That would get them into the Big Ten championship. So, yeah, like, it would be interesting to see what happens with, I don't know if they're going to the Big Ten championships because Penn State and Ohio State will probably be there. I don't know, whatever.
Starting point is 00:23:18 But it will be interesting to see what happens with Marlon Klein because obviously he was missed tonight. But the interesting thing about that is over the next three games, it might force them to find other playmakers in the passing game because there was clearly a void without Klein in that game in that game. They were trying to figure it out. And some of the other guys started to step up a little bit, but they need those guys to play a bigger role. If you don't have Klein in the lineup for the next game or two, it might actually help them in the long run by forcing them to find other players. McCulley kid's a player. They don't.
Starting point is 00:23:48 Yeah. That catch he made. But young, but, you know, raw, I should say. He's a senior, but I don't know. Where has he been actually? I thought he was young. I thought he was too. He's 6-5-215.
Starting point is 00:24:02 I don't know what his deal is. Probably should know better than that. But three catches, 91 yards. Yeah, my fault. No other receiver had more than one catch. So, all right. I think that's pretty much. pretty much covers it.
Starting point is 00:24:20 That Oklahoma schedule is brutal. But this is a team, like, you start to see some of the cracks and some of those other programs. You know? Yeah. The Ole Miss is absolutely beatable, you know? South Carolina's beatable.
Starting point is 00:24:39 They're not South Carolina last year yet. They may be. So it's just going to be interesting to see. I think this Oklahoma team, as we said during our preseason stuff, is a lot better than people think. where we go I'm actually going to flip it
Starting point is 00:25:02 I want to go to Clemson okay there were two games going on at the same point in time where it's like I kept thinking to myself that quote ingest there's truth so like yeah you're making a joke but I know there's still something in here that like there's a reason why you're cutting at me a little bit
Starting point is 00:25:20 but it's funny and we can laugh about it but I can tell like it's still that that little thing about me pisses you off a little bit right in jest there's truth and as I'm watching these games and both teams are losing and it doesn't look good at halftime
Starting point is 00:25:35 I'm like I do like I strongly believe both teams are going to snap two and come back and win and in the fourth quarter both those games I was like yeah that's what that's what's going to happen ain't pretty but but I'm talking about Clemson and Florida right Thompson and Florida Florida
Starting point is 00:25:53 Florida number 13 ranked Florida playing USF in the swamp. Number eight ranked Clemson, ranked Clemson, playing Troy in Death Valley. And they're both losing at halftime, but I'm both like, I'm not that, they're going to snap to.
Starting point is 00:26:10 There's a rain delay, Clemson, Florida, but they're going to be fine. And for one of them, they were, the other one they were. Florida obviously wound up losing 18 to 16. Clemson comes back and wins 2716. Everything looks fine, the scoreboard, tight game, bad weather in the south.
Starting point is 00:26:29 these, a lot of teams like Georgia was close with Austin P. And but that, the reason I want to start with Clemson is, and I want to make this point, even though they came back in one by 11 points, I am more concerned about Cade Clubnick, specifically and the Clemson offense after this win against Troy than I was after the loss against LSU. I really am. I'm going to let you go on this. one. I don't want to, I've done enough with the Clemson fans. I'm going to let you let you speak,
Starting point is 00:27:08 but I do agree with you. No, I think I'm speaking for the Clemson fan. I'm speaking for the Clemson fan when I say, we all know Cade Clubnick is a phenomenal quarterback. I know he's prepared. I saw his work ethic. I, in, you know, in person. I saw the way he carries himself, how hard he's, he's grinding to get little things from Peyton Manning, the shape that he's in. everything. It's right, like in late June, early July where you want your quarterback to be mentally and physically in all those things. We saw the tape last year. We saw him get better as the season progressed. We saw him do some special things. We saw that long run against Pitt to when they sealed the game. We saw in the college football playoff by battling back. We saw before that to get into the college football playoff in the ACC championship, upsetting SMU.
Starting point is 00:28:01 We know what Clubnik is. But I don't care. who the quarterback is. If you can't protect him and the weapons aren't where they're supposed to be, what is a supporting cast issue now becomes your issue because you're not comfortable in the pocket. You're starting to rush throws. You're starting to make bad decisions. You're not trusting the things around you, the elements, the protection, where the receivers
Starting point is 00:28:31 are going to be. Can my back actually protect? And I saw it against LSU, but it's the first game of the year. Then you go watch the tape. You study those things and you start to correct them. And sure is shit, we're going to have this corrected for Troy. For Troy, right. And I get it.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Like there was a rain delay and it was kind of a funky game. And it felt disjointed. But you're still Clemson. Those are still four returning starters. You're still close. Two first round picks on the defensive line. You mean, and the defense played good. And they still were playing good,
Starting point is 00:29:13 and then they played great in the second half. Right. I watched it because I went from like Old Miss, you know, Ole Miss Kentucky was a tight game. And so I'm watching that and I'm watching Kansas, Missouri, because that's an interesting rivalry game and that's a tight game. Jalen Daniels is doing special things.
Starting point is 00:29:29 But then they're coming back. Oh, Pritula. Big game in that game. Oh, Pribula. He played great. Yeah. But the Clemson thing, when I saw the score, I saw 7-0 and then rain delay.
Starting point is 00:29:38 So I kind of put it on the back burner. And then I saw the back playing. So I checked in on it. I watched a seven-minute span, Mench, where it was two costly turnovers that bang led to a field goal, then bang, it was the interception. It was down to like the five or something like that. And then they scored on the subsequent play or plays.
Starting point is 00:30:03 and then I'm watching Clubnik and then I watch this and this is what makes me it was smart football and I understand what they were doing but when you got Cade Clubnick who could be the number one overall pick in the NFL draft and I know Antonio Williams is still out and he's a star wide receiver but you got Westco Westgo yeah I always Winkar and Westgo. Westgo and Moore and you got dudes. You come out from halftime
Starting point is 00:30:37 and now, because now you're scared. It went from cute 7-0-0-0-0-0. Now it's 16-0-0-1-5. Yeah, 16-3 at the half. They got, yeah, it was 16-3. But it just wasn't. They came out, got the ball, second half.
Starting point is 00:30:56 You know what was interesting to me, Munch? That first try, of the second half when backs were against the wall and like we better nip this now because it start like they're getting confidence balls not rolling our way tonight we bet like this is they came out and had a 10 play drive they ran it eight times they don't trust their protection yeah and they just don't and you know what they shouldn't so i don't know how you fix that besides but because it's the same guys it's not like you're You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:31:35 So is it, are we going to get different personnel? But I'm watching club. Clubnick didn't look great and his feet weren't set sometimes in that first game. And he made some throws. And you could tell the pressure was getting to him. But it was against LSU. And they brought in a bunch of dudes in the portal.
Starting point is 00:31:56 And they got athletes everywhere. And they're rotating eight guys along the defensive line. And they're really getting pressure on him. This is Troy. How are you not more? scared after this game. Because like I said, in jest, there's truth. Like, yeah, you came back in one and everything looked good.
Starting point is 00:32:13 And it was just kind of weird week two and everyone's kind of having an off week. But there was a flaw in there. There was something wrong in there. Do you put any stock in this being a hangover game? Fine. It can be a hangover game. But in hangover games, you have the turnovers that you had. Those are, like, I'm fine.
Starting point is 00:32:36 He fumbled. fine, he threw an interception. I'm talking about the plays in between, man, where I've got a quarterback who's a veteran. It's been through a lot of wars. It's going to be a first round NFL draft pick. And I don't trust when I come out of halftime that I can protect him.
Starting point is 00:32:53 And I'm starting to worry because he's seeing ghosts. And his feet aren't right. And he's rushing things. He's not making good decisions. And it's Troy. I don't know. I don't want to.
Starting point is 00:33:07 to make this a good. He doesn't have a safety blanket in Tonya Williams. He doesn't have that, that, you know, the guy that he can rely on in that moment, which is, you know, just goes to what you're saying. Yeah. I hear you, man. I said it, I said it in the very beginning of the year, and I'll keep saying it. You can be experienced all you want, but you got to, you mean, you've got to have dudes up front too. Like, it's nice that this group's played together for so long, but they haven't been a great offense line. So, the defense is a really good unit. and Tom Allen's doing a really good job and they were just putting bad spots today
Starting point is 00:33:45 and they weren't perfect and they kind of a hangover game but like they buckled down when they needed to you know interceptions turned the ball over all that stuff shut out the second half yeah but what what becomes of this Clemson team
Starting point is 00:34:02 that everyone had ranked in the top five coming in the year that I'm aware of yeah I mean look they got they got Georgia Tech Syracuse, North Carolina. These are all games that I feel pretty comfortable about them winning. Then they got SMU Duke. Georgia Tech will beat their ass up front if they're not,
Starting point is 00:34:25 you know what I mean? I still think they find it. I think they're too talented not to win. No, I know, but we would have said that about Troy. I don't know. I'm looking bigger picture and I see what you're doing and I'm not like mad at you. Well, this is what I'm going to say to you. Are they the 2020,
Starting point is 00:34:42 2024 Clemson Tigers, where they go on this run against kind of subpar teams and they make it to the playoffs. And then we realize that, yeah, they kind of who they are, who we thought they are.
Starting point is 00:34:53 They're a good football team, but they're not the Clemsons that, you know, we're competing for national championships. They're not that program anymore. Or are they the program that's going to compete for national championship?
Starting point is 00:35:03 Like, we thought they were going to come into the season. Like which one of these things are going to get? Because I think their schedule is going to hide some of the warts. I think. Well,
Starting point is 00:35:10 their defense is a hell of a lot better than a year ago. We know that from the jump. And their offense got a hell of a lot better in the second half of last year. So if you're a Clemson fan and we're all pulling for Clubnik. That's true, but then you say that, but you're also saying they only won
Starting point is 00:35:27 27 to 16 against Troy and got a scare. No, I know. Is it just a blip? Who did they have Georgia Tech next? Yep. Syracuse, North Carolina. That Georgia Tech game, I'm way more curious about than I should be. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:35:50 I want to see, are there new helmets starting in the offensive line? What is changing? Got it. One time is maybe an opponent, one time, maybe a fluke, maybe it's the first game, maybe it's all of those things. For it to be rearing its ugly head again, there's a problem. And it needs to be addressed. So.
Starting point is 00:36:14 All right. And then the real ugly thing. happened. I was going to say, speaking of problems. And yeah, you've fucking ruined a four-leg parlay for Fanduil. You put it in. You have, you have, you have, you have the final say and you put it in there. That's all I'm to say. And you knew something was wrong. By the way, you knew
Starting point is 00:36:37 something was wrong. You have onions. You had to, you have cheese and only down to three and a half. You have absolute onions coming on the attack. right now. Because I was actually going to like, but let's just, let's move on to the ball. Let's talk about Florida.
Starting point is 00:36:50 You messed up our fort. But I want to remind you, we both had two individual plays and decided we were going to collaborate. It was going to be a mention McShay collab. Because Fandu is nice enough to keep these lights on and to put food. Oh, and a friend loves me. And to put food on,
Starting point is 00:37:09 on your beautiful little girl's plate at night. You get three that have left the nest, but you got one beautiful little girl. who still needs shoes. And Fandul is supporting all this. So part of me thought you sabotaged it because you don't want Fanduil to go bankrupt. I did not.
Starting point is 00:37:26 Because we're banging four-leg parleyes on him every week. There's no conspiracy. Fan-Dugl is counterme. But because I wanted to collab with your good mench, at your good mench on social media, if you want to reach out and yell at him because he ruined the four-leg parlay. I even gave us alternate lines.
Starting point is 00:37:48 First of all, you had Michigan, you wanted Michigan plus the points. I wiped that out. I wanted Oklahoma. Know how that went. Then I gave you an alternate line. It was 17. I did a minus 620 to get your Florida gators. What I love, by the way.
Starting point is 00:38:08 But not in this game. On the board. You knew something was wrong. I nailed Iowa. I nailed. I nailed Illinois and nailed Baylor. And then Florida, all they had to do was win by four. And that brings us to number 13, Florida,
Starting point is 00:38:27 scoring a measly 16 points against USF. And listen, we come back on Monday. We're back on Thursday. We're back all year. You know where to find us, folks? We'll be not this week. We're in Chicago on Wednesday night. Good point.
Starting point is 00:38:43 Oh, yeah. By the way, yeah. I don't even have our feed pull up, but what am I doing? I think it was like a cow coming on. There's just a lot of chaos. I want to see who's on here. But by the way, if you're watching the live show, the live stream, you're on there right now. Thank you, for starters.
Starting point is 00:38:58 Secondly, if you live in the Chicago area and you get nothing to do on Wednesday night, or if you do make different plans, Lincoln Hall, 7 o'clock central time, Mench, myself, Big Cat, Barstool, Big Cat, We're going to be there and we're going to have a blast. So keep that in mind if you're watching or if you're watching tomorrow after the fact. Wednesday is the big day. We're excited. You saw the sign up.
Starting point is 00:39:27 I sent you the picture. Brother-in-law walked by. It looks good. The McShay show right outside Lincoln Hall. So that's going to be a fun night. I do want to say this. Florida. Brutal loss.
Starting point is 00:39:44 You cannot with that schedule. You can't ever. you can't ever drop this game. My point that I was going to say is we're back all week. We're back all year. This ain't going to be a USF show tonight, folks. I think USF plays Miami next week, by the way. They do.
Starting point is 00:40:05 Yeah. Awesome. So you know what? We'll become more of a USF show as the week goes on. Right. Not tonight. And yes, I do consider USF is just a really good football team. but they ain't Florida talent was.
Starting point is 00:40:21 And this is a home game. And as you pointed out wisely the other day, you pointed this out, maybe USF beaten Boise State in the manner in which it did woke up Florida to like, oh, we're not just throwing our helmets on the field, right? We got to go actually.
Starting point is 00:40:37 Yeah. We got to. So there's no excuse. No, they didn't get caught pants down. Hey, it's Troy. Shouldn't have. No. they got their ass beat and they showed inefficiencies throughout lagway completed they didn't
Starting point is 00:40:57 protect well they didn't generate the run game they should their defensive line did not generate pressure consistently that group with tyreek sap with um our defensive tackle cala wasn't in the game cala banks didn't play today oh that's right so that helps us but but why isn't he playing? Penalties. Special team meltdown for the safety. Botch to snap, made it 15 to 9 to start the fourth quarter.
Starting point is 00:41:35 Lost by two. All those things. So this was not just lagway, but again, we've got some really big stars in this game at the quarterback position to start this year. And we got some guys like Nussmeyer,
Starting point is 00:41:52 who played better in that first game than I expected him to. And I don't know that my bar could have been higher for Nussmeyer coming into the year. And he exceeded it. True. What Meteer just did, despite it being wild in classic Meteer style, we got the full treatment, it was fucking awesome. That is a gladiator out there. Prepared, hungry, whatever it takes.
Starting point is 00:42:18 Okay. We got sellers doing some specials. stuff. We got certain guys doing those things. But now we've got, like, is saying as good as we think at Ohio State. Well, look good today. They won like 69 or 70 to nothing. But he did his job the first week, going to need see growth. Underwood,
Starting point is 00:42:39 going to need to see growth. These megastards, Arch, look better today, going to have to continue to see growth. You know what I mean? Yeah. And then there's DJ. Lagway who's as talented as any of them.
Starting point is 00:42:58 It was hard to watch at times, man. I didn't see improvement as a passer. I didn't see the timing and the touch. I saw him rifling balls at receivers underneath that should not have been rifled. I saw him overthrow badly, rolling to his right in the middle of the third quarter,
Starting point is 00:43:17 overthrow his receiver for an interception. I also question, this drove me nuts. and it's all you. Florida gets the ball back, 250 remaining, leading by a point. Own territory, but closer to midfield,
Starting point is 00:43:35 leading by one, 250 left. It's first in 10. This USF team has put, no style points here. Let's get out of our own stadium. Let's get out of our own stadium. First and 10,
Starting point is 00:43:52 they only have two timeouts left. Run the ball. ball. I knew that as a run the goddamn ball. Run the ball. I don't know. Like, I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:44:05 I don't know. About that, I just have to say this. But if Lagway checked out of that, if Lagway checked out of that, add it to the list and put it at the top of the list of fuckups in this game. If, if he didn't, the coaching staff is going to be, is more, even more responsible than it should be. And to be quite honest, it's a collaboration of both because there has to, you to be a cooler head or a smarter head that prevails.
Starting point is 00:44:28 And so if you put in a play, if you call in a play in the headset, there are ways to say, to determine that we can't check out of this. Not negotiable here. Everyone has different language for it. Just like when you call it an RPO, there's a word in the play call, something that indicates you're actually, this is a design, this is an absolute design handoff here. You don't have the option.
Starting point is 00:44:57 That was brutal. And so what happens? They throw for an incomplete pass in the first and 10. USF only has to burn two timeouts. They get the ball back with like 205. It was a 27 second drive. It's wild. And there was other times.
Starting point is 00:45:19 This is what was nuts to me. There was other times in this game that you needed to be aggressive. I thought they could have gone for a couple of fourth downs and kind of maybe like establish their dominance and be like, we're the big brother here. We're going to make a play right here, right now. We have an all-world quarterback. We know we can do this.
Starting point is 00:45:38 And punt, punt, punt, punt. And it was like, what are we doing? And now when it matters the most, we have a three-play, 27-second drive because we wanted to get cute on first down. What are we doing? What are we doing? Like, I'm sorry because, I mean,
Starting point is 00:45:55 I think Coach Napier is a good coach. And we obviously had him on last year, and he was a great guy. But when you look at this game, like some of the management at the end of the game, the execution on special teams, when you have a snap that goes out of the end zone, you know, you don't know how the games that unfold after that, but essentially cost them the game. That was the two points.
Starting point is 00:46:15 That essentially costing the game. And then players committing selfish penalties at the end of the game. I mean, I just, I was stunned, stunned. They had to go, in South Florida, had to go 87 yards at the end. there. That was, it was an 87-yard drive. Actually, I don't know how that all works. But anyways, I was just there, I think there was the personal foul. Yeah, unsportsman like conduct. The dude, do you think you would learn? Tell me if I'm right about this. He got, he got, if I'm remembering this correctly, uh, Brennan, Becca kicked out for spitting on someone.
Starting point is 00:46:51 You would think. Yeah, I saw that. That could not happen after what happened Thursday night. After what happened with Jaylon Carter and the Philadelphia Eagles. You would think, that there's no way in the world that can do. Now, that's not always the coach's fault. I'll, you know, like, it is what it is, but like, that's on you. The buck stops with you. You had zero penalties last week. You had 11 for 103.
Starting point is 00:47:14 And they were a key point like that, that unsportsmanlike penalty. 15 yards, takes them to the 24 to the 39. All of a sudden they're rolling. They've got a really good kicker. It was stunning to me, just stunning to me, some of the decisions at late. the execution, it was just all, it all came apart. I do. I mean, it is, it is 12, 15 a.m.
Starting point is 00:47:40 in the East Coast. And I'm not like, no, you're not wrong. Okay. You're not wrong. But I'm saying, as, as I'm listening to you, and I promise I listen to the whole thing, and you're not wrong, Brian Haas is, is launching a campaign to fire Napier tonight. Which that sucks. And, but Brian Haas is.
Starting point is 00:48:02 is also, Brian Haas might just be a salty S-O-B, but thanks for joining us in the show because he wants Sharon Moore fired too. I get it. There's a difference between being pissed. There's a trend here, Brian. Yeah, you're going to have to tell your friends the phone in. But my point is, yes, there are people that are pissed.
Starting point is 00:48:24 I love Billy. Like, and I don't just, like, I like Billy the guy. And Billy's like, always been good to us. But it's not that. It's, my goodness, I just can't remember a time in which I didn't think a coach had any chance in the world of getting his team to play for him and to like finish a season the way that Florida did last year, given the circumstances.
Starting point is 00:48:49 It was incredible job. That was special. And so I look at this loss and I'm like, well, if there's an upside to it, it wasn't the SEC. see still the conference and like and all you have to do is getting the playoff and it's not a 14 playoff it's not the you know the BCS era and all that stuff so like hopes aren't over but I do know this there will like if lagway isn't special while this program has a ton of talent so do a lot of teams that they're playing yeah lagway
Starting point is 00:49:30 finished with six carries for nine yards, bud. Lagway completed 70% of his throws, but for 233 for 222, 6.7 yards per attempt, and it kept going down as the game was going on. He had that interception, which was really bad, the overthrow, I told you rolling who was right. He may have checked him out from a run to a pass on first and 10 in an unacceptable situation.
Starting point is 00:50:00 I don't know if that's true or not. It's scary. He's at LSU next week at Miami the week after that. Stop there. Stop there. Stop there. You're not going to want me to stop there, though. They get a buy, and then they, then Texas comes to town.
Starting point is 00:50:21 Their next three games are LSU, Miami, Texas. So they, like, if they don't, what they did writing the ship and the way they played down the stretch last, year compared to what they were early in the season. But it's also when Lagway came in and they got cracking. If they don't immediately from South Florida this week to that version of themselves last year, but a more experienced version, they could be looking at an early October situation where they are one and four, right?
Starting point is 00:50:57 Or no, one, two, three, five. Oh, yeah, no, that's no, one and four. And then they, because they would lose They're one in one now. Yep. And then they lose to LSU, Miami, and Texas. And by the way, you know who they got the week after Texas?
Starting point is 00:51:12 We said this was a possibility. They go to Texas A&M. By the way, a little shout out to Miles O'Neill for Texas A&M. We came in today. Marcel Reed got, got nicked up and didn't want them back in or protecting them or whatever. Miles O'Neil was a from, you heard Cal earlier on the show. Marblehead, Swampscouts rival. He's a marble. Marblehead guy. And Alex, Alex McLaughlin,
Starting point is 00:51:41 who works with a lot of quarterbacks around here, is actually working with Tate, my son. He and Mike McCarthy, they were on the M2QB. They work with him every offseason. Apparently, he can throw the ball 90 yards in the air. He's like a phenom. Played his last year of high school in New Jersey. But he came in and did really good things. So he might be next up at Texas A&M, but neither here or there. Yeah, I mean, I don't think there's anything else to say. Is South Florida that good? I mean, I don't know they just beat Boise State, but that felt like, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:52:23 it just felt like Boise State was maybe a little overrated coming to the season. They got away from them. Now they beat Florida in Florida, like maybe I'm underrating South Florida. like Brian has just admitted he wants everyone fired at least you're honest Brian but he does go around to say like no way that Napier lasts the season and you know what like if they don't turn it around and I don't I guess so I'm at this early crossroads in week two and I'm like I'm staring at two programs that are top 15 in terms of the talent and all that but I'm staring at glaring issues that I just, and it's, and it's just one week,
Starting point is 00:53:06 and maybe it's a letdown game, and maybe everything's just fine, and maybe Florida comes out gangbusters and shocks the world. Maybe Clemson comes out and they run that easier schedule compared to what Florida has to go up against. I told you, I've walked in pneumonia, man. I'm a warrior. Stud.
Starting point is 00:53:24 Yeah, I'm the, I'm the, I'm the John Matera podcast. I was going to look up South Florida. I told you, we'll get to them later. Yeah, this is your Jordan game. Yes. I do want to get to some positive things. You'd love to shoot, but you were bad. That's debatable.
Starting point is 00:53:45 That's debatable. Cal still can't shoot. Sawyer Robertson. Let's get to some positive stuff here. I can't believe you waited this long. I cannot believe you waited this long. You have been dying to talk about this kid. Go ahead.
Starting point is 00:54:03 He deserves it, by the way. He deserves everything. thing he gets, all the praise he gets from you tonight? I've told you he's 6'4, told you he's 22. I told you he runs, throws well on the run. I've told you he came to Manning Passing Academy and he had Nussmeyer and Sellers and Klobnik and all
Starting point is 00:54:22 these guys. And he won that competition Friday night lights deal. And he did it by being perfect. There's an ease about the way he plays the game. There's a confidence. What I haven't told you is how resilient and tough this cat is.
Starting point is 00:54:43 This is two weeks in a row that he's had his ass handed to him and bounces back. You know what happened in the first four series of this game? Excuse me. He got pounded, absolutely pounded. First two drives, 64 yards, two turnovers on downs, grinding it away, but just taking lick after lick. Next two drives, 156 yards with two touchdowns. No fear.
Starting point is 00:55:14 Yeah. This, I mean, I'm pulling for Robertson. I want him to have an awesome year. Dave O'Rand is a defensive guy, and I really like him, and I really think he's a smart coach. This defense is unacceptable. And Jennings is awesome. And Jennings was awesome.
Starting point is 00:55:33 At the half, you ready for this? At the half, man. This is the best game of the day. Maybe the best game. of the young college football season. The final was Baylor 48, in case you didn't watch SMU 45 in overtime, double overtime.
Starting point is 00:55:51 At the half, it was an absolute treat. You know, Kevin Jennings was 10 for 10 for 236 yards and two touchdowns. And Robertson brought him back to make it a three point deficit at the half, 24, 21. He was 21 of 26.
Starting point is 00:56:11 234 and two touchdowns in the first half. No interceptions between them. This was like quarterbacking brilliance in very different ways. Jennings is running around doing crazy stuff. Only completed, only attempted 10 passes, completed all 10 of them. Running, making plays. Robertson was hanging in the pocket, getting whacked, finding open receivers, escaping, but it was through the air for the most part.
Starting point is 00:56:39 I just hope that people start to realize, like, we may have seen something in this guy, and he might be worth keeping an eye on. That's two weeks in a row against two really good teams that we think. SMU is a good team. Preseason, when did they come into, they came into today ranked what?
Starting point is 00:57:02 17th or 16th? 17, yeah, there was 17. At SMU with the beautiful Dallas Mustang running through the helmet, running through the D helmet. coming off that tough loss against Auburn, all that stuff. Yeah. He's got something special about him.
Starting point is 00:57:23 I'm not saying he's going to be a first round pick. I'm not saying he's going to be a great NFL starter. I'm just saying for a guy that they didn't even know last year if he was going to start. And he transferred from Mississippi State. And you just wondered if it ever was going to come together. Yeah, they were down 14. They were down 14 with less than nine minutes of this game. Yes.
Starting point is 00:57:43 There were so many times, down 10, twice in the first half. You know, you get to overtime. time you're, this is on the road. There are so many times in this game, it could have been, well, we played them tough, we kept coming back, but we just weren't able to do it, you know? You know, like you see in basketball, there's a game of runs. This is, this reminded me a basketball game. Oh, it was. It's a game of runs. And sometimes the team will get up 20 and the other team will score 18, but just can't get over the hump because they're gassed from just trying to get back into the game. And it happens all the time. Like, he just found a way, found a way to put him over the
Starting point is 00:58:17 edge to make it happen. I mean, he really, he came real close to doing it in Auburn last week, too. I mean, he's, he's off to a great start. You know what else that stood out to me today? Josh Cameron, NFL scouts know him, but I think, and listen, I don't know how good Baylor is going to be. They're one in one. So maybe he's not going to get a lot of like big time game run.
Starting point is 00:58:43 But he's 61218, wide receiver for Baylor. 61218, he's a senior. inconsistent throughout his career, but talented. 21 miles per hour he's been tracked at, estimated 4-4-5. Dynamic punt return, man. You know, he average at that size, nearly 21 yards per punt return last year.
Starting point is 00:59:05 Wow. And kind of had a breakout year last year, over 754 receiving yards last year, okay? Ten touchdowns last year. And I've talked to NFL scouts about him. Could be a top 100 pick. be first three rounds, but need to see more games like this stacked. Now, the thing with Josh Cameron is, first game of the year, Auburn, two catches for 54 yards. You love the yards
Starting point is 00:59:33 per catch. So now he comes out in this game and he has what, nine, one, one 51 and two. And he start to be that guy. But he's, here's, he is a name, Josh Cameron, that NFL scouts are on. and I'm excited to see if he can build on this because he's someone that you're probably going to hear his name called in the first two nights of the NFL draft. Last thing. Hold on, you're not going to throw out the stat? What's that?
Starting point is 01:00:02 The last, the last Big 12 quarterback to throw for over 400 yards in consecutive games. I think that's the stat. Baker? Because that was Big 12 at the time. Mahomes. Really? Yeah.
Starting point is 01:00:16 He's, I wonder, yeah, I'll just see if I can, find it, but I believe that he definitely did something no one has done since Mahomes. And I think it was over 400 yards and back-to-back games. That sounds right. That actually lines up. Yeah. You're not the best hype man in the
Starting point is 01:00:32 business for nothing, man. Just slinging the ball out there. It's crazy. Illinois, dude, go ahead. I like the games with no defense sometimes. I get it. I get it. They need to play a better defense if they're going to compete and all that stuff. I like those old big 12 games where they just
Starting point is 01:00:50 loaded it all over the yard. It was kind of refreshing, right? Like, yeah, we've had a lot of defensive games in college. Like, it was an awesome quarterback game club, club Nick Nussmeyer, who was 1710, arch versus training the young guns.
Starting point is 01:01:04 You know, like, even tonight, what was the final of that Michigan, uh, Oklahoma, 24, 17? 13, or probably know that. That's been bouncing back and forth. 2413, yeah, 2413. Because they got the field goal late.
Starting point is 01:01:24 So we're not talking about, like, a lot of high-level offensive games. No. Going on. And, like, we talked about Clemson. It was 16 to 3 at the half. It was Florida losing 18 to 16. So to have a game that finishes 48, 45, and double over time
Starting point is 01:01:44 was a lot of fun to watch. We talked about all these quarterbacks in the noon window. Two of them were. Robertson versus Jennings, like lights out, couldn't be any better than they were. Another one was Iowa, Iowa State. Grinowski, we talked about his struggles in the first week. We hope he was going to bounce back going up against Rocco Beck. Like, I just can't do it.
Starting point is 01:02:07 I'd rather go to bed than talk about that game. It's, it was, it didn't go the way. I just, I'm not, I'm not going to do it. If we're forced to talk about one of those, those two teams in the next few weeks, Wonderful. I hope they get all their problems fixed. I'm just not doing it tonight. I'm not doing it to the people who are on here that are loyal watchers of our show. And the Goodwin.
Starting point is 01:02:31 The chat keeps growing and people are going. I'm not doing it to poor Brian Hoss. He's going to have everyone else fired too. He's going to have Ferrens fired soon. But Illinois Duke was interesting. It was a lot closer than the 4519. What was interesting to me is I actually, I actually, I don't know.
Starting point is 01:03:00 Altmire's a really good player. I thought he was streaky today. I thought there were moments where he made some nice throws and did a lot of good things. I thought there were a lot of throws, though. He missed in the strike zone. He seemed like his feet were rushed. I think, you know, Manny Diaz does a good job, but on the defensive side, man. I thought that defense did really well.
Starting point is 01:03:19 Mensa made more mistakes. Things were kind of more up and down. Mensa didn't have a receiver that could uncover for, again, so that Illinois secondary can cover. Yeah. Menson is going to want a couple back. He wants to, you got greedy on the pick.
Starting point is 01:03:37 The underthrow versus the zone. That under the left side, under through the zone defender, eyes on him and he underthrew it for the interception. That was in the fourth. Love the poise. You can't hold on to it that long. He'll learn that.
Starting point is 01:03:51 He'll understand that you got to get it out a little quicker and realize that there might be guys coming from the back side that you're not, seeing and he just held on a little ball a couple times lost a couple fumbles and you know there's i thought he played really well overall but he's got there's a four or five plays in that game that really costs them that he's got to fix but you know what here's the thing i went into that game thinking it was going to be like a really fascinating quarterback battle i didn't think it was going to be a ton of points illinois winds up putting on 45 but it was a lot like late and and and all myers
Starting point is 01:04:24 settled down by the way i thought he's really yeah Yeah, okay. I thought he was really shaky in the beginning. And then he got into a groove. And then there was a couple throws he missed late, but overall I thought he was really good. I agree. Didn't turn the ball over.
Starting point is 01:04:36 A lot of toughness, a lot of composure. Kid knows how to win games, man. He just knows how to win. That's a better Duke team that I think people realized. Duke had some, I agree. They shot themselves in the foot today. It did not have to end like that.
Starting point is 01:04:50 No. No, it didn't. But I do like to throw names on the radar or early in September. It's week two. We always got an eye towards the NFL draft. And even if it's not the NFL draft, shoot, Illinois, what was Illinois rent coming in?
Starting point is 01:05:06 They were 11, man. 11. And by the way, watching that game, I was like, man, this team looks like the 11th best team in the country. I thought they played well. No? Maybe. I'm not sure yet.
Starting point is 01:05:22 Stop it. I don't want to get to fight. like, Beelma and I have had the most up and down relationship of two, two people, media. Here he goes again. Here he goes again. Yeah. No, I, no, no. I've always been really great to Beelma. He's been great to me in moments.
Starting point is 01:05:38 He's been an absolute prick out of nowhere for no reason to me sometimes. And that's fine too. I don't mind. I really don't. I've sat in meetings that, like, I've sat in some really personal meetings with him, emotional meetings and like, really, really. really talked and like I also like I emceed the
Starting point is 01:05:57 freaking Rose Bowl thing at Landrys or Lowrys. Best buds. And then sometimes he takes these jabs at me every third, fourth year on like social media out of nowhere. I'm like, what the f? It's got to keep you in your toes. I like it.
Starting point is 01:06:12 But regardless, I'm not going after anything. I'm just saying I'm not sure yet. Shoot, Florida is 13. Right. Bremsen's eight. So yeah, maybe they are the 11th. My point is, I like this team.
Starting point is 01:06:26 I'm curious to see how they continue to grow. Great way to finish that game. But I fell in love with a player today. And he wasn't on the radar coming into this year, really. Hank Beattie is an absolute football player, man. I mean, I think we've got a graphic here. I'd love to, oh, there it is. I can't see it.
Starting point is 01:06:51 The beauty of doing this stuff. But anyway, I'll tell you what I've gotten. It probably lines up with what we've got here. This guy, oh, I can look at this. Modern technology. Eight catches 128 yards, 25 yards rushing on one carry. Okay, that was today. Eight for 128.
Starting point is 01:07:11 The week before, he had five catches for 108 yards. So two games now. He's got 13 catches, 136. He also had four punt returns for 133 yards. Do you understand what that was? He shattered Red Grange's a 102-year-old record with 133 yards on four punt returns.
Starting point is 01:07:39 That stretches back to 1923. Not a single person on here probably even know, maybe a couple of them. Red Grange. Yeah. It's awesome. He's an Illinois legend, by the way.
Starting point is 01:07:55 He grew up in Illinois, probably could have gone somewhere else. He was a former high school. High school Gatorade, Illinois, high school Gatorade player of the year. Yeah, legend. But he's 511. He's 185. He might run a 45.
Starting point is 01:08:10 Yeah. I don't care. I want him on my team. I think sometimes people are like, when you say he's a football player, they think it's kind of lazy or whatever. It's just, there's no other way to describe that kind of a player. Like, he's just good at football. How does he get open?
Starting point is 01:08:27 Does he have a special? Does he have great vertical? Does he have a great 40? Is he tall? Is he long? Is he big? Is he strong? No, but the dude is a player.
Starting point is 01:08:35 Sometimes you want to go. You want to get him the ball when the game's in the line. You want them, you can trust him to make the play when you need it. And so he, I mean, we only have gone like a hundred or so deep on our preseason list. Senior Bowl,
Starting point is 01:08:51 they've got a bunch of scouts. They get ready for their game. They have to have their stuff in a lot earlier than we do. and shoot a lot earlier than NFL teams do. They get a preseason top 300. Not on it. Not on it. But this guy can play,
Starting point is 01:09:08 and I don't care if it's a seventh round pick, undrafted, like some guys find a way. I like what I'm seeing. I'm interested to see if he continues this kind of track. Ray Ray McLeod was the, as I said, off the top of the show.
Starting point is 01:09:23 It's a good cop, by the way. Because I'm not lazy and I'm not weird, and I don't have to see a white, receiver and call him Danny and M. Dola. You're a little weird. Wes Welker. You're a little weird.
Starting point is 01:09:34 I take great pride in that. Another guy flashed in that game, though. I'm not going to let it. I'm going to go with my trenches guy. The defense event from Duke, Vincent Anthony Jr., I didn't know a lot about. He had two and a half sacks today. All over the place in the first half, kind of a quieter second half.
Starting point is 01:09:52 But, I mean, six, six, two 60 and moves really well, someone who's also on the radar now. Timothy Hart, top seven quarterbacks. Nussmeyer, Sellers, Aller, Metteer, Mendoza Robertson
Starting point is 01:10:12 Klubnick. Just trying to get me going, huh? Yeah, just wants the to needle you. Dan's is trying to get us to shut it down. Dan thinks we've... Is he texting you? You didn't see the note? Everybody's told me to shut up?
Starting point is 01:10:31 No, not tell you to shut it up. He's like, we should think about wrapping it up, which is Dan's, Dan's speak for, we should, we should probably end this now. No, Dan, I don't want to. Sorry, Dan. Austin Pondel asked, any chance Matt Campbell would leave for an SEC job.
Starting point is 01:10:50 Matt Campbell's had some offers, man. Yeah, he should get some offers, by the way. But he's had some offers. I'll be interested to see if you, damn good coach. I don't want to, by me saying I passed on Iowa State, Iowa, I want to make sure everyone understands. Like, what Campbell's doing is awesome.
Starting point is 01:11:09 Like the toughness, the grid, that was a physical game. We were just doing a lot of quarterback stuff, and today was not the day to focus on that game with the way the quarterback play was in that game. Yeah, it wasn't Rocco's best game. But that's all right, they got the win. I love it. We're getting, Sawyer Robertson.
Starting point is 01:11:28 Let me just say the Sawyer. about Sawyer Wait, hold on, where'd it go? I love the, I love how people are starting to finally get on the Sawyer-Robertson boat, but let's not get carried away. You know? Let's get carried away, why not?
Starting point is 01:11:52 He's not going ahead of Clubnik. We say this every year, though, and it happens with someone who that someone's going to be, is going to be a mater, it's going to be Robertson, Too early to tell. Timothy Hart is getting carried away. I mean, he's got our back.
Starting point is 01:12:11 He's watching the show, and he sees what we're cooking up. All right, there's a bunch of other stuff, but I think we've gone long enough as our trusty producers kindly told you to tell me. Yeah, I find.
Starting point is 01:12:24 We're back on Monday morning. Awesome to have Cal on. Good to see him. Yeah, good to see, Cal. I want to get the man's perspective on. I just honestly, Mateer is special. He is so entertaining.
Starting point is 01:12:40 He does all the right things and he does it the right way. And I just, I want to see, oh, you keep winning, staying in the conversation because the game of college football this year is a hell of a lot better with that guy in the spotlight. Because he made prime time tonight. That was a show.
Starting point is 01:12:56 And it was a one-man show. We knew it was going to be, but until we saw it, we saw it. And that was awesome. We'll see you Monday morning. Who are you going to watch on tape? I don't know.
Starting point is 01:13:09 There's a lot of different angles to take. I want to go positive. So it's not going to be a deep dive into what happened with Florida. It's going to be looking deeper at the Oklahoma team. Can I give you an assignment? Mm-hmm. I want to watch whatever you want. Obviously, I would love for you through your lens as an offensive lineman and your expertise in it.
Starting point is 01:13:31 I would love for you to bring back to the people on Monday. day as part of one of a handful of things that I think we'll do. What is wrong with? But like how do we fix? Is it a personnel thing? Is there a guy or two on that Clemson offensive line that you just can't get the job done with? Is it they're not working together in unison?
Starting point is 01:13:53 Is it what is it? You just want you want me to kill by Clemson fans. Not only are you setting me up to get. No, I think like if you're an actual. Sorry, Dan. but not only you're setting me up to get yelled at Clemson, and then you want to fly me down at Clemson in a month or two. The writing's on the wall here.
Starting point is 01:14:11 Yeah, I do. I want both. But I think if you're a real Clemson fan, you want to know, like, what's actually going on? I hear you. You're not going into it, like, hating on Clemson. You're going into it. No.
Starting point is 01:14:25 I am identifying this or that. And if I'm seeing it, they clearly are too. And here's what my guess is that they'll try to, maybe do. And I'm just extending the end of the show to piss off there. Anything else? All right. I think we're good. Five stars. See you Monday.
