Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show
where conservation always wins.
I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Randall Williams and some special guests with us.
Number 42 from the University of Michigan basketball team, Will Cheddar,
and two members of the University of Michigan fishing team, Connor Prokop and Brady Bush.
And today we are coming to you live from the tailgate of the Michigan Wolverines versus
Texas Longhorns football game in Ann Arbor.
We are here on the Meat Eater Tailgate Tour, which is traveling across the country this
fall to some of the biggest college football games of the season.
Will Connor Brady, welcome to the show.
Thank you.
Appreciate you having us.
Now, as part of this tour, we're doing some hunting and fishing in each location.
You can see this.
I think it's going to be in December or January.
You can see the video we're making.
Yesterday, me, Randall, Connor, and Brody went bass fishing.
Randall, try to describe that whole morning.
Just one word.
Just give me one word right now.
Oh, one word?
I'm just going to go with fantastic.
Fantastic.
And, like, that doesn't even do it justice.
Fabulous?
It was maybe, like, the most insane three hours of fishing.
I was trying to rack my brain yesterday.
I actually, before you phrased the question that way, I was going to say a banner day.
A banner day.
It was a day to be remembered.
I was trying to do a little math.
We were there for about three hours, and if we caught a fish every three minutes,
which may seem like it might have been like every two minutes,
but let's say it was three minutes.
That means we caught 240 bass that morning.
Does that seem right?
Does that feel like a 240 bass day?
I was thinking more.
I think a lot more.
I think more. Yeah. Connor, Brady, have you guys ever had a morning like that seem right? Does that feel like a 240 bass day? I was thinking more. I think a lot more. I think more.
Yeah.
Connor, Brady, have you guys ever had a morning like that of fishing?
Very few.
Yeah.
Very few.
Yeah.
We were in Ann Arbor.
We're like an hour away from some of the finest walleye and smallmouth fishing in the world,
Lake St. Clair, the Detroit River, Lake Erie.
And we could have gone there and we could have had a different kind of banner day.
But we're like, no, we're going to do something much dumber than that.
We went to OnX to look for hidden bodies of water in town,
and what we found was a golf course, and we got permission to fish there.
And they're like, yeah, there's some bass in there.
You guys are welcome to go out there.
And there were a ton of bass in there.
And I'm glad we went there because I was told by one of our fellow anglers
that had we gone to the Huron River based on my technique,
I wouldn't have caught anything.
I wonder who that would have been.
Unexpectedly, I think I caught the biggest fish.
I think so too.
By quite a bit.
Yeah, probably a pound and a half, a four and a half pounder. That's right. I think so too. By quite a bit. Yeah, probably a pound and a half. A four and a half pounder.
That's right.
I caught a four. You caught a four pounder?
Under three. I mean under four.
It was three and change.
3.8. It was
a big bass. There was some big bass to be caught.
Most everything was like 10 to 12
inches.
But it was really insane.
You guys must think me and Randall are pretty good fishermen after yesterday.
Very good.
Give us an honest review.
Connor, go first.
What did you think of what was happening out there?
I don't know.
Randall, who said that the fishing on the Huron was too technical for you?
I believe it was Connor.
It was shortly after he told me that I was fishing
my top water plug incorrectly.
And then that was, I think that was before Brady
had to retie my mess of a braided line tangles.
So somewhere in there I remember hearing
that I wouldn't have caught anything.
We had the 20 year old helping the 40 year old.
37. with his knots
and fishing technique.
Brady, you must think that we're
really good anglers.
Honestly, I thought you guys were going to be a lot worse.
Oh, you did? Okay, well that doesn't make me
feel any better.
I was actually impressed.
Why'd you think that? I don't know. I just thought that.
Okay.
And someone had to hit the weight room instead of fishing. Why did you think that? I don't know. I just thought that. Okay. A couple guys from Montana.
And someone had to hit the weight room instead of fishing.
I would have showed you guys all how to do it.
I asked Connor and Brady yesterday because we were fishing at like 7 a.m.
on a Friday, and I was like, are you guys skipping class?
And they go, it'll be fine, which was not a no.
Definitely not a no.
It was like a yes or no question.
That wasn't what we got.
Now, you guys are on the University of Michigan fishing team.
What does that even mean?
Basically, it's a club, so we're not sponsored by the university.
But it's a club of anglers, and we all get together, fish sometimes,
and just talk fishing.
Do you guys do tournaments?
We do a few tournaments throughout the year.
Not a lot. We'd like to get into more, but the university doesn't do a few tournaments throughout the year. Not a lot.
We'd like to get into more, but the university doesn't sponsor us,
so it's hard to get a boat.
I heard multiple people ask you yesterday if you guys were on scholarship.
I wish.
That would be nice.
That's not the case.
That would be very nice.
When you guys are doing tournaments, is that against the other members in the club
or against other schools who have clubs?
Other schools.
We do other friendly tournaments within the club itself.
Just go to a little water park and fish.
What is University of Michigan's reputation
among all the fishing teams?
Among the fishing teams?
Are you guys competitive?
I would like to think so, but it's tough
because a lot of these other schools
get pretty good funding, I would say.
But I think we're pretty competitive when we do fish tournaments brady and i got after it yeah they they wanted to
finish the tournament recently yeah we're like fifth place after the first day oh and this was
just like uh anyone could enter it was like a collegian tournament this was our state the state
college championship hell yeah so if there are any you know well-heeled donors and boosters out there
that please like to help out a couple
Bass Crazy young men. Toss us some
dough. Do that. They were wearing
their jerseys yesterday that had
their sponsors on them. You get
nice placement on there.
Now also joining us is Will Cheddar and he would
have been there yesterday but he had basketball practice
and Will even invited us
to come to practice yesterday.
Will, how tall are you?
I'm about 6'9".
About 6'9".
Yeah.
Does that make it...
About 6'8", with some change.
Okay, does that make it harder or easier
to be an outdoorsman?
I mean, it really depends what you're fishing for,
if I'm gonna be completely honest.
You know, if you're trying to...
When's it good to be 6'8"?
Sight fishing.
Yeah, sight fishing.
You can go out to Pyramid Lake, You're trying to. When's it good to be 6'8"? Sight fishing. Yeah, sight fishing.
You can go out to Pyramid Lake.
It wouldn't be the latter.
But also, it's like a disadvantage, you know,
because if you're fishing like a tiny little stream with some clear water,
you know, they can see your shadow.
They can see you.
You know, they're scattering all over the place.
So, you know, sometimes you got to get a little gritty. You know, you got to get down on your hands and knees.
You know, you got to get ready. You got to, you know to get down on your hands and knees. You've got to get ready.
You've got to sneak up on them.
Will is a junior on the basketball team,
and I was looking at his high school stats,
averaged 33.4 points per game.
Insanity.
Yeah.
That was a great time just in my life.
That was great.
I've got some trivia here for Randall.
Will was a four-star recruit in high school.
There was only one Minnesotan ranked higher than him in the 2021 class.
That player went to Gonzaga.
Do you know who it was, Randall?
In the 2021 class?
2021 high school class.
There was one player ranked higher than him.
Did it be Chet?
It was Chet Holmgren.
Did you ever play against Chet?
Yeah, I did.
I played against him.
This is actually a really good story.
Okay.
Chet was supposed to play this team from Tennessee, Mike Miller's son,
and they got snowed out.
And so we got a call from –
So was that team in Mitchell, South Dakota, or where were they at?
No, they were out of somewhere in Tennessee.
It was some prep school.
Yeah.
And we got called
up. Our AD got a call from
the mini-haha, who Chet played for. Their AD
was like, would you guys have any interest in
playing on ESPN today?
And that morning we got the call
and that night we were playing
Chet on ESPN. Amazing.
Yeah. And we only lost by 19.
Okay.
How many did you have?
I had like 20.
Nice.
Yeah.
Not a bad night.
Efficient, though, I'm sure.
Huh?
You were efficient, I'm sure.
Oh, yeah.
That might have been, you know, a little bit out of the...
You can just lie.
You can just lie.
Very efficient.
No one's going to check.
Did it as a shot.
Yep.
Now, last summer, Will worked on a bison ranch in Montana.
And that was actually from Matt Scoglin from North Bridger Bison. We've done a lot
of stuff with Matt. You can go to YouTube and watch our
Clovis Point bison butchering
video. We did the bull boat race with one
of his bison hides. What was
it like working on a bison ranch
in Montana in the summer? Yeah, I mean, I don't have
enough good things to say about Matt. I know
you guys probably feel the same way. He's just a
great guy. You know, being able to spend
time, you know, out in Bozeman area,
zero complaints whatsoever.
Great fishing, great views, great people.
So it's helped me so much.
And my academics, being able to spend time out there,
get to know people.
Are you going back this summer?
Dude, I go back whenever I can, to be completely honest with
you.
I went back once this spring, got to fish a ton,
and then got to go back for an event that Matt had on his ranch this year.
Nice.
So I got to go back twice, which I'm super fortunate for.
So, yeah, it was great.
Awesome.
We're about to play some trivia here among all this chaos.
This is going to be maybe a little sloppier than normal,
but it's going to be fun.
There's a lot going on here.
And when we play trivia, Randall always wins at trivia,
and the damn guy caught the biggest bass yesterday,
and I'm just, like, tired of it.
And so I told Randall that I'm going to give our players here,
our guests, an advantage for this week's game,
and he's been stressing about it for the last ten days.
What do you think is going to happen, Randall?
I have no idea.
I have no idea. I have no idea.
I've been told that I will be at a distinct disadvantage in this.
He's worried about it.
I was sleepless last night. I was tossing and turning in my bed,
wondering what these questions would look like. Well, here it is. Now, Randall is a doctor, in case you guys didn't know.
And that gives an upper hand on these college kids
who aren't done book learning yet.
So to even out today's game,
all of their questions will be multiple choice,
while all of Randall's questions are not.
So when I ask the question,
we'll give Randall like a minute to answer.
He'll come up with his answer.
And then I will give you other three, the multiple choice options for that question. We'll give Randall like a minute to answer. He'll come up with his answer. And then I will give you other three, the multiple choice options for that question.
It's a fun twist.
We're going to make sure Randall doesn't win.
Here's the other thing.
You guys are competing for a $500 donation today.
If Connor, Brady, or Will wins, that money will go to the University of Michigan fishing team.
And if Randall wins, that money will go to the University of Michigan fishing team. And if Randall wins, that money will go to their rival,
the Ohio State University.
Oh, shit.
Oh, no.
So $500 on the line going to some collegiate university club fishing team today.
We're going to find out who that is.
Playing for keeps, boys.
Let's not let Randall win.
Better start dialing in.
With that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, boys. Let's not let Randall win. Better start dialing in. With that, we're on to the
game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
Look, I need to know
what I stand to win. Everything.
How's that?
Just tend to win everything.
Game on, suckers!
Question one.
The topic is public lands.
And normally this is multiple choice for all the players,
but today that will not be multiple choice for Randall.
It's just open-ended for him.
This Native American tribe has a national forest named after them in Minnesota,
river named after them in Wisconsin, and college mascot named after them in Minnesota, river named after them in Wisconsin,
and college mascot named after them in Michigan?
We'll give Randall a minute to think about this and come up with his answer.
I will then give you other three, your four choices.
Here's the question again.
This Native American tribe has a national forest named after them in Minnesota,
river named after them in Wisconsin,
and college mascot named after them in Michigan.
Randall, you tell me when you're done with your answer.
I think I'm done with my answer.
Okay, your four choices for you other three players are Choctaw, Ottawa, Sioux, or Chippewa?
This Native American tribe has a national forest named after them in Minnesota,
river named after them in Wisconsin,
and college mascot named after them in Michigan.
Choctaw, Ottawa, Sioux, or Chippewa?
Randall, one of those four choices, do you have your answer?
I do.
Okay, he does.
And I noticed Brady didn't even need the choices to come up with an answer.
He's down then.
Okay.
Is everybody ready?
Yep.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We have Randall saying Chippewa.
Connor says Sioux.
Will and Brady say Chippewa.
They got it. The correct answer is the Chippewa.
The Chippewa lived across the Great Lakes and upper Great Plains.
The tribe was known for their birch bark canoes, copper, wild rice, and maple syrup.
The Chippewa were excellent anglers, with whitefish, sturgeon, and walleye being a primary part of their diet.
Question two.
The topic is conservation.
This is an audio question.
Phil is going to play you one minute of a song,
and you need to tell me what band that is.
Here's why this question is relevant.
The lead singer of this band once donated a 1,000-acre ranch
to a nonprofit land trust.
Take it away, Phil.
Oh, Randall needed two notes to write down his answer.
Oh, me too, Spencer.
Will, he doesn't need any choices either.
This is good pregame music.
Feel ready to funnel a beer.
Come on, baby.
Every high school football game.
Yeah, totally.
Come on, man.
We've got Will playing air drums back there.
Oh, man.
Flashbacks.
You've got to know the name of this one.
Come on, man.
All right.
Your four choices for who this band is.
Are Nirvana, Metallica, ACDC, or Grateful Dead?
I'm actually a little bit nervous about my answer now.
Nirvana, Metallica, ACDC, or Grateful Dead, again, the lead singer of this band,
once donated a 1,000-acre ranch to a nonprofit land trust.
Nirvana, Metallica, ACDC.
This is where being 20 does not come in health.
He's a big Kuyu guy.
I'll give you that hint.
Oh, I didn't know that.
Oh, yeah.
Is everybody ready?
Dialed.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We have Randall saying Metallica, Connor saying Metallica,
Will saying Metallica, and Brady saying Nirvana.
The correct answer is Metallica.
Good.
Three of our players got it.
James Hetfield.
I'm right with you.
All tied up. We're right with you. All tied up.
We're right here.
Come on, Will.
James Hetfield owned land north of San Francisco that he attempted to develop in 2011.
Locals pushed back against Hetfield, who wound up in a long legal battle over the property.
Then, in a stunning pivot, he instead donated the land to the Marin Egg Land Trust.
They are a nonprofit who protects farms and ranches from being developed,
which is exactly what Hetfield was originally going to do.
And Metallica's song, Enter Sandman, that you just heard,
was named the 23rd greatest jock jam of all time by Billboard.
It was famously the entrance song for Mariano Rivera
and is always played at Virginia Tech football games.
It is Marin.
Oh, it's Marin.
Marin.
I did not know that.
You're very familiar with the Bay Area.
I am.
Okay.
Well, I think that's that Cuyu connection, too, that NorCal hunting scene.
And Randall said that song makes him want to funnel a beer.
He also declared earlier this week that if some college kid were to try to get him to shotgun,
he would just have to oblige.
I think I'm the only contestant this morning who has not funneled a beer yet.
Okay.
That's good to know.
Connor, yeah.
Me and Connor.
Here is question three.
The topic is fishing.
This is our listener question of the week, which was won by Jerry Cyric for sending this great question.
Jerry is going to get a board game signed by the crew.
If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week,
then send your question to trivia at themeatdeater.com.
What's the anatomical name for the whisker-like sensory organs
near the mouth of catfish, sturgeon, and carp?
Randall does not need any time or choices.
You're very confident?
Yes.
Your four choices are barbel, nair, coddle, or otolith.
I'm a catfish man at heart, Spencer.
What's the anatomical name?
I thought we were going to get a bass lure question.
What's the anatomical name for the whisker-like sensory organs near the mouth of catfish, sturgeon, and carp? Is it barbel,
nair, coddle, or otolith? Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Randall
saying barbel, Connor saying bar barbel all four players say barbel
They got it the correct answer is barbel. Did you boys need the choices on that one or did you I did not I?
Kind of did I just forget the names strong competitors over here the word barbel is derived from the Latin word
Barbula which means little beard barbels have taste buds that help fish locate food in murky water.
It's been observed that some fish will grow longer whiskers when starved of nutrition
in lab conditions so that they can increase their odds of finding food.
Question 4, the topic is hunting. This 2018 video game allows players to hunt, fish, forage, rockhound, break horses, cook
wild game, sell pelts, and stop poachers.
Oh lord.
Uh, 2018?
2018.
2018.
This 2018 video game allows players to hunt, fish, forage, rockhound, break horses, cook
wild game, sell pelts, and Stop Poachers.
This is like my worst nightmare.
I don't play video games.
I am, but this is a spinoff.
This is an adaptation of an earlier franchise.
Correct me, Phil, if I'm wrong.
No one's going to correct you if you're wrong.
All right, here are your four choices.
Is it Assassin's Creed 3, The Hunter, Call of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, or Far Cry 4?
This 2018 video game allows players to hunt, fish, forage, rock hound, break horses, cook wild games, sell pelts, and stop poachers.
Your choice is Assassin's Creed, The Hunter, Red Dead Redemption, or Far Cry.
Hey Will, you're three for three, right?
Yeah.
Okay, that's what I thought.
Double check.
Good reminder.
I'm going on a limb.
I'm hanging here.
Is everybody ready?
Being a video game and you guys are college students, I thought this would be like just
a gimme.
No.
I've never played a video game in my life.
Go ahead and reveal
your answers. We have Randall saying
Red Dead Redemption.
Connor says The Hunter Call of the Wild.
Will says the same thing.
Hunter Call of the Wild. And Brady says Far Cry 4.
The correct answer
is Red Dead
Redemption.
Damn, Randall got it right.
Red Dead Revolver is like from 2009.
That was the OG.
That was the OG, and then there was Red Dead Redemption 1.
That's why I was confused.
Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in the United States in 1899.
The game includes about 20 huntable animals and a dozen catchable fish.
In one storyline, you come upon a herd of
bison that's been killed but none of their meat has been taken you then find
a nearby camp with two men who confess that they poached the bison and then
tried to make it look like Native Americans did it you're then given the
choice of killing the poachers or letting them go when I played I gave
those poachers the death penalty. Question five. The topic is gear.
This boat brand is best known for their Pro V series,
which they've sold for 36 years.
Oh, he's thumped.
This is the first time Randall has not been incredibly confident.
Again, this is question five.
She rips.
The topic is gear.
This boat brand is best known for their Pro V series, Oh, yeah, I should find your lips topic is grips this boat branch
For their pro out of these series, which thirty nine years for 36 years
Randall has yet to call you stop
Man I don't like he's He's now going to his whiteboard.
This boat brand is best known for their Pro-V series,
which they've sold for 36 years.
And this is question five, so after this we will get a
scoreboard update from Phil the engineer.
What's their best known for?
I said best known for their Pro-V series.
Don't give him a hint.
Which they've sold for 36 years.
Oh, he erased.
Randall is cringing.
His answer is stopped.
He's made a decision to erase it.
Oh, he erased again.
He's going for a third answer.
No.
He's back to his original answer.
Yeah, I don't like it.
I don't like it.
He's done with his answer.
Your four choices are Lund, Bass Cat, Skeeter,
or Legend.
Randall, do you
have one of those four answers?
I wasn't even listening after.
So we know
Randall is not going to get this one.
I could tell you what it is now.
You think you know? I do.
Again, your four choices, Lund, Bass Cat,
Skeeter, or or legend is everybody ready
Sir go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Randall who said a luma craft
Choice one he put one
Connor says Lund will and Brady say
Except for Randy
All tied up again.
Lund.
Lund debuted their Pro V series in 1988,
and it's been their flagship boat ever since.
Pro Vs are considered multi-species boats
rather than being specialized for just bass or walleye.
They're best known for having a large interior and plenty of storage.
Spacious.
Phil, we are halfway through the game of trivia.
Give us a scoreboard update.
It's close, boys.
We got Connor and Brady tied up with three points
and then tied up in first place are Randall and Will with four.
Okay.
I'm here.
I'm here.
He's here.
Game going.
Ooh.
Hey, folks.

Question six.
The topic is wildlife.
Oh, yeah.
This is the most common
state reptile in America
representing Colorado,
Illinois,
Michigan, and Vermont. This is the most common state reptile in America representing Colorado, Illinois, Michigan,
and Vermont.
Randall is stumped again.
When you say reptile, do you mean like...
Like a reptile.
Like a reptile?
Like a reptile.
A state would have like a state flag, state mammal, state fish.
Perfect.
How specific do you want us to be on this one?
If you –
Or me, I should say, because everybody else gets the answers.
The exact same thing.
You need to be specific.
Like if this question were about mammals,
you couldn't just say the state mammal is a dog.
That would not work for this.
Again, it's the most common state reptile in America.
Representing Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, and Vermont.
Randall, are you done with your answer?
That's a wide variety of statements.
I know.
Randall is done with your answer. That's a wide variety of statements. I know. The handle is done with his answer.
Your four choices are rattlesnake, snapping turtle,
bull snake, or painted turtle.
Your four choices, rattlesnake, snapping turtle,
bull snake, or painted turtle.
The most common state reptile in America.
Wait, what were the states again? Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, and Vermont.
Oh, wait, wait, wait.
We've got a few players on our team who grew up in Michigan,
another player who now lives in Michigan,
and they don't seem to be confident about what their own state reptile is.
I got it.
I'll be honest, Spencer, I don't think anybody cares about state reptiles.
Is everybody ready?
Four choices.
Rattlesnake, Snapping Turtle, Bull Snake, Painted Turtle.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We have Randall saying Box Turtle, which was not one of the four choices.
Connor says Painted Turtle.
Will says Painted Turtle.
Brady says painted turtle.
I don't like this.
I think it's a sniper.
The correct answer is painted turtle.
Our three Michigan students got that one right.
In many states, state reptiles are lobbied for
on behalf of school children,
including three of the four states
that chose the painted turtle.
Virginia is one of the four states that chose the painted turtle. Virginia is one of the newest states that chose a state reptile, electing for the garter
snake.
They considered doing a box turtle about a decade ago, but decided its practice of hiding
in its shell is too cowardly and that their state symbol shouldn't be splattered all over
roads.
That's why I thought box turtle.
I forgot that they went against the initial... Question seven. That's why I thought box turtle. I forgot that they went against the initial.
Question seven.
The topic is wildlife.
What university has a bison named Ralphie
who runs across the field before football games?
Randall is getting his confidence back a little bit.
He's eager to write down his answer for question seven.
What university has a bison named Ralphie who runs across the field before football games?
Randall, are you done with your answer?
I am.
Okay.
Here are your choices for the other three players.
Don't overthink it.
Is it University of Wyoming, Oklahoma State University, University of Colorado, or North Dakota State University?
Ah, shoot.
No, they don't do it.
What university has a bison named Ralphie
who runs across the field before football games?
University of Wyoming, Oklahoma State University,
University of Colorado, or North Dakota State University?
God, I can't remember.
I can't remember if NDSU runs that or not.
Randall, do you have one of those four answers
as your answer?
I do.
OK.
Randall is threatening to get this one right.
Yeah.
So are we.
Are you other three ready?
Oh, yeah.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We have Randall saying see you Boulder
Connor says North Dakota State will says Colorado
Brady says Colorado the correct answer is
the University of Colorado three of our dial and players got that one, right?
University of Colorado has had a live bison on their sidelines since 1957.
They introduced Ralphie 1 in 1966, and they are now on Ralphie 6.
The college always chooses a female bison to be Ralphie
because they're smaller and less aggressive.
Ralphie lives on an undisclosed ranch outside of Boulder,
which the university keeps private to protect the bison from getting visitors.
Question eight.
The topic is cooking.
What country's cuisine are calamari and carpaccio?
What country's cuisine are calamari and carpaccio?
Randall, are you done with your answer?
It was quick to answer.
This is question eight.
I believe so.
Okay, here are the four choices.
Is it France, Greece, Japan, or Italy?
Randall, do you have one of those four?
I do.
What country's cuisine are calamari and carpaccio?
France, Greece, Japan, or Italy?
What are you guys thinking?
Oh, come on.
I think I beat you.
Is this the least confident you other three have felt yet?
I should know this because I watch a lot of Gordon Ramsay.
I'd say you're beating me fair and square,
but clearly by the rules of I'd say you're beating me fair and square, but clearly
by the rules of this contest, you're not.
Maybe he's asked to play one
on one after this. I'm pretty quick, man.
You play one on one
and Randall gets a 10 point lead.
I would say he's probably
answered just as
many of them without the clues.
Is everybody ready?
Go ahead and reveal
your answers. We have Randall
and Connor and Will
saying Italy. Brady, who just
declared he watches a lot of Gordon Ramsay,
says Japan.
The correct answer is
Italy. Calamari
comes from the Italian word for squid.
Fried calamari has long been
a popular Mediterranean dish, but it didn't resonate with Americans
until the 1980s.
A large reason why it took off in popularity was the marketing shift from calling it squid
to calling it calamari.
This change helped usher in a booming calamari market with American sales doubling between
1989 and 1994.
We have two questions left.
Phil, give us a scoreboard update.
A lot of pressure.
Everyone is still in the game, technically.
That's good news.
We've got Brady and Connor tied up with five points.
Then coming up next in second place is Randall Williams with six,
and in first with seven points is Will.
And Randall has already declared it's been quite an honest game from Will back there.
I would say so also.
Yeah, I have to say this is an impressive showing.
Two questions left.
Here's question nine.
The topic is fishing.
This NFL Hall of Famer wore a straight bass, homie,
shirt at his Minnesota charity fishing event he hosted in 2021.
Oh, Lord.
This NFL Hall of Famer wore a, quote, straight bass, homie.
Shirt at the Minnesota charity fishing event he hosted in 2021.
What's going on behind us back there, Phil?
Do you have a...
They're cheering for a comeback, Spencer.
I think that's it, yeah.
Randall, are you ready with your answer?
Okay, your choices for the other three are
Michael Irvin, Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, or Kelvin Johnson.
This Hall of Famer wore a straight bass, homie,
at a Minnesota charity fishing event in 2021.
Randy, Randall, do you have one of those as your answer?
I do.
Okay, is everybody ready?
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We have Randy saying Randy Moss.
Connor says Kelvin Johnson. Will says Randy Moss. Brady saying Randy Moss. Connor says Kelvin Johnson.
Will says Randy Moss.
Brady says Randy Moss.
The correct answer is Randy Moss.
Three of our four players got it.
Randy's straight bass classic was held on Lake Minnetonka.
The name of the event and shirt he was wearing were inspired by an interview he gave in 2005
after scoring the winning touchdown against the Packers in a Lambeau Field playoff game.
Moss fake-mooned the fans.
The league didn't find it funny and fined Moss $10,000.
Then a few days later, while getting into his car outside of a team facility,
a reporter asked Randy how he'd pay the fine.
This was that exchange.
Write a check yet, Randy?
What do you win if you don't write checks?
How do you pay, man?
If you don't write checks, how do you pay these guys?
Great cash, homie.
I feel like I said that line a million times in my childhood.
Will, growing up in Minnesota, was like straight cash, homie,
was that in your vernacular for a long time?
Or were you too young for that?
I think I was one generation removed.
Okay, too young for it.
Straight bass, homie.
We're on to question 10.
We have Randall and Will left in the game. Randall is one point behind Will,
who has the lead with, is it eight correct answers?
Yes, Will has eight.
Here is question 10.
The topic is natural history.
And this next great question is via Jacob Hubbard.
What continent was hit by the asteroid
that killed the dinosaurs?
Oh my God, would you consider this?
Randall is very confident. The topic is natural history.
What continent was hit by the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs?
I mean, I know where... could I put a country?
Well, I'm going to give you choices in a second.
And it was what continent?
Oh, I forgot about the choices, Scott. Randall was confident there for a second. And it was what kind of... Oh, I forgot about the choices.
Randall was confident there for a second.
I'll go with you no choices.
I was feeling so good.
I'll go with you no choices.
You want to go
mano-a-mano here with Randall, huh?
Yeah, I'll go.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
Will, Will.
I don't know.
Just put your board down.
Just put your board down
when you're ready.
Okay.
We have Will, who has the option of using choices,
electing not to use choices.
And I just want to clarify, Will, you have a continent,
not a country, right?
No, yeah.
Okay.
I wish I could do a country.
I don't see how that would be easier,
but I'm now going to give the four choices to the two players
who would like them.
Your options are North America, Africa, Asia, or Antarctica.
Oh, yeah.
We're dialed.
Will is confident and Randall is confident.
I'm between two, but I think I got it.
Just to be clear, we're assuming that the Chicks' Loop impact
killed the dinosaurs.
What's that?
Yes.
I want to hear Randall's theory.
Yeah.
What is that? Is everybody ready want to hear Randall's theory. Yeah. What is that?
Is everybody ready?
It's the K2 extinction. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
And this is a $500 donation on the line to the University of Michigan
or the Ohio State University for their fishing clubs.
We have Randall saying North America.
Connor says North America.
Will says North America. He didn't need the choices. And Brady saying North America. Connor says North America. Will says North America.
He didn't need the choices.
And Brady saying North America.
The correct answer is North America, making Will our winner.
Let's go.
Good game, guys.
It's been real.
You played the game the right way.
Thank you, sir.
The asteroid that killed the dinosaurs struck the Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago.
It's estimated that the asteroid was about six miles wide and moving at a speed of 45,000 miles per hour.
The Chicxulub crater was created at the site of impact,
but is slowly filled into the point where it's barely visible today.
I'm so upset.
Will, again, is our winner. That means he gets to give the $500 donation on behalf of him
and Meat Eater to the University of Michigan fishing team.
So now Connor and Brady, what can you buy with $500?
Like 12 of those Japanese bass lures you were using yesterday?
Maybe.
Maybe.
Yeah, I feel better about this, actually,
because they're probably going to need to replace
some tackle after I've been
manhandling it for a morning.
Randall was a little destructive yesterday.
Randall or the bass, I'm not sure which.
Well done, Will!
That was, you know what,
like Randall and Brady said, you didn't
even need the choices that often.
When they
announce you this season, is this going to be part of
the highlight reel?
Media trivia champion.
Will Cheddar, number 42.
Raise the banner.
That's right. Fantastic, gang.
Well done, boys. Now, like
I said, the $500 donation going
there. We should go to the
game now, I think. It's about that time to head to the stadium.
Let's do it. Right on. Alright, thanks for coming
guys. I appreciate it. Join us next
time for more Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show
where conservation always wins.
It's been a real pleasure, guys. Appreciate it.
Appreciate you guys having us on.

he's the host.
Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays
them questions down.
And he likes taking those two- and three-year-old bucks.
And he's an avid amateur rock hound.
