Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Giannis, Brody, Cal, Randall, Alyssa, Garrett, and Logan. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meat Eaters for Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing.
Starting point is 00:01:26 And for the stat of the week this week, we're looking at the number 200. That's how much money you can save while shopping during Whitetail Week, which is happening right now, Yanni. Over at FirstLight.com, our best whitetail gear is on sale until Sunday, October 6th. FirstLight will give you $50 off of $200 orders, $100 off of $400 orders, and $200 off of $800 orders. Whitetail Week only lasts a few more days,
Starting point is 00:01:53 so go shop before it's too late. That's like 20% off, ain't it? Yeah, that sounds right. Well, 25% off. 25% off. It's a graduated sale. When are you going to start saying the game show where Conservation and Randall always win? Well, Randall is coming off of a perfect game last week.
Starting point is 00:02:15 Son of a gun. I must have been away for too long. I forgot all about that. Yeah, we got, it doesn't seem like you forgot. But when we sat down in here, Yanni asked Randall if he's okay. For people who aren't watching on YouTube, Yanni, why would you ask Randall that question? He looks, the dictionary definition of disheveled. His hair, normally he shows up for these very well kept.
Starting point is 00:02:43 His hair is like, slicked down nice. I have been... Are you zooming in, Bill? Because we have to do all this stuff in the same studio, and there's no visual cue for the viewer, I've decided to comb my hair for Radio Live, and then for trivia, I'm going to look like this. Okay. I like it. And we had Brody describe it before the mics were turned on as the evil professor.
Starting point is 00:03:08 No, mad professor. Oh, mad professor. Okay. I'll let you know. I speak. Take him off and show everyone. There's a weariness. There's a weariness in his eyes.
Starting point is 00:03:19 I drove nine hours to be here today. And I only had to drive seven. This was a vacation day for Randall. He got a last-minute invite. He said he'll be here, and Randall said, well, nobody invited me to play games for 15 years, so now he can't miss an episode of trivia. I barely had time to enjoy my Taco Bell
Starting point is 00:03:38 before turning and burning over to the office. We're glad you're here. Now here's our infrequently asked questions segment. If you have a trivia related question for our crew, send it to trivia at
Starting point is 00:03:49 themeatdeeter.com with the subject line IFAQ. Phillip Hartman says, it feels like it would be a huge win to have a Meat Deeter trivia question
Starting point is 00:03:58 on the game show Jeopardy. Has anyone launched an effort to do so? Furthermore, has Brody or the good Dr. Randall ever taken the qualification test? Phillip, I'm thrilled you asked.
Starting point is 00:04:09 To answer that question, I want to play a clip for you from the March 6, 2024 episode of Meat Eater Trivia. Take it away, Phil. Question seven. The topic is fishing. This is an audio question. Phil is going to play you 30 seconds of a tune called The topic is fishing. This is an audio question. Phil is going to play you 30 seconds of a tune called The Fishing Hole. You need to tell me what 1960s television series this was the theme song for. Take it away, Phil. Well, now take. No, no, no. Hold on. You're supposed at 47 seconds.
Starting point is 00:04:46 I love the song. Love the tune. Have no idea. Yeah. Okay, that was on March 6, 2024. Next, I want to play a clip from the April 17, 2024 episode of Jeopardy. Take it away, Phil.
Starting point is 00:05:02 Done with a slew of whistling, Fish and Hole is the theme from this down-home show. Allison. What is the Andy Griffith show? That's correct. TV Music 1200, please. Allison Hannigan. Now that's pretty suspicious, right?
Starting point is 00:05:13 Well, we did some research and found that Jeopardy! episode with the same question was filmed on March 12th, which is six days after we released the meat eater episode I referenced earlier. Now we did a little more poking around and found that found someone who knows someone who's very familiar with the question writing process at Jeopardy. That source said that Jeopardy writers have a giant pool of questions that are written well in advance, but will also create questions the week of filming to round out an episode. So, it's possible that someone from Jeopardy! was listening to Meat Eater Trivia and borrowed that question to help finish the TV music category. I will say that, to my knowledge,
Starting point is 00:05:52 it hasn't happened since then, but the timing is almost too crazy to simply be a coincidence. You a big conspiracy guy? Yeah, exactly. I'm not a big conspiracy guy, but we just said, a week apart, the episode came out. This is just a coincidence that I'm asking that. conspiracy guy, but we just said a week apart, the episode came out.
Starting point is 00:06:06 This is just a coincidence that I'm asking that. And then one week later, Jeopardy somehow had the same question referencing a TV show that's like 55 years old. And to be fair, they could pull from all of human knowledge. That's right. They're not limited to four verticals. And somehow they ended up on the fishing hole? Yeah, very, very suspicious. We had about a dozen people send that to me when they heard it happen. Said, hey, I think maybe Jeopardy is listening. It's good enough for me. I will take that as a victory that they are.
Starting point is 00:06:39 Now to answer the second part of your question, Phillip, we have not taken the Jeopardy qualification test, but that would be good content. So we'll do that sometime. Randall, have you ever, have you ever not taken the Jeopardy qualification test, but that would be good content, so we'll do that sometime. Randall, have you ever eyed the Jeopardy qualification test? I have not. I've looked in. I mean, I've talked to people about it, but I've never taken it myself. I think you can do an online version, so we'll do that sometime. You, Brody,
Starting point is 00:06:59 Yanni, me, Steve. We can make some content out of it. That's right. We'll see who could be good enough for Jeopardy. No housekeeping this week, but we have an important update on Me Deeter Crossword Puzzles next week, October 7th through October 11th. We have five days of Me Deeter Mini Crosswords. These puzzles will be just five clues
Starting point is 00:07:17 and should take you about one minute to complete. After that week, Me Deeter Crosswords will be taking a one-month hiatus and will return on November 13th. So enjoy the mini Crossword Week October 7th through October 11th and then come back ready to beat Dr. Randall on November 13th. All of those crosswords are available over on TheMeatEater.com slash games. Are you going to do a special Whitetail Week crossword puzzle? Maybe.
Starting point is 00:07:44 I've been thinking about it. We'll see. I'll definitely have in the mini crosswords the week. I know, Yanni. You're telling me. We'll see. No promises. Now, the Shelby Index for today is a five,
Starting point is 00:07:57 so I'm putting us on perfect score alert. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win to everything. How's that? You just tend to win everything. Game on, suckers! Question one.
Starting point is 00:08:22 The topic is woodsmanship, and this will be multiple choice. Which of these states does not have native palm trees? Is it Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, or Oregon? Which of these states does not have native palm trees? Your four choices. Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Oregon. Three of them have native palm trees. One of them does not.
Starting point is 00:08:55 Seems like a real trick question. You think it's a trick question, Yanni? I'm not sure which one of those would be the trick. You're not? I don't know. Which of these states does not have... Can I tell you which one of those would be the trick. You're not? I don't know. Which of these states does not have native palm trees? Can I tell you which one I think would be the trick? Sure, you could help the other six players in the room.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Which one do you think is the trick? I think it would be Oregon. You think Oregon's the trick. Okay, which of these states does not have native palm trees? Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Oregon. Then I fell for it. Okay. Oh, man. Brody seems less confident than Yanni about what could be a trick.
Starting point is 00:09:33 Garrett says that if it is a trick, he fell for the trick. Which of these states does not have native palm trees? Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, Oregon. Is everybody ready go ahead and reveal your answers we have cal saying arizona randall says oregon garrett oregon alissa oregon logan north carolina yannis oregon Brody. He wrote down Arizona, crossed that out, and went with Oregon. The correct answer is Oregon. The room did very well.
Starting point is 00:10:13 Only a few of you fell for what Gianni deemed to be the trick. According to the International Palm Society, there are 16 states with native palm trees. Most are located in the southeast between Texas and North Carolina. There are a few types of palm trees that grow along the Oregon coast in urban areas, but none of them are native to the state.
Starting point is 00:10:35 Question two, the topic is hunting. I like my palms to float into their habitat, which is why I chose the landlocked state as the non-palm state. There are the southwest corner of the state. There is one palm
Starting point is 00:10:50 tree native to Arizona. Question two. The topic is hunting. This next great question is via Olivia Lappin. What game bird goes by the nickname Timberdoodle? What game bird goes by the nickname Timberdoodle? What game bird goes by the nickname Timberdoodle? Brody, very confident.
Starting point is 00:11:12 I feel like we've had this question before. We have not had this question before. Yanni is confident. Cal Garrett. Randall all appear to know it. Alyssa, you spent a lot of time with... Are you... Birds.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Up on birds. Bird dogs. I have, but I don't know what a timber doodle is. I'm taking a guess. What game bird goes by the nickname timber doodle? Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal and Randall and Garrett saying Woodcock.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Alyssa, Grouse, Logan, Pheasant, Giannis and Brody say Woodcock. They got it. The correct answer is American Woodcock. Timberdoodle is a fittingly silly nickname for a silly-looking bird. Seneca Indians reportedly believed that the Woodcock was created from the leftover parts of every other bird in the forest.
Starting point is 00:12:14 They have a small, chunky body with short legs, large eyes, and an enormous beak. Question three, the topic is cooking. This sandwich, which is layered with ham, pork, Swiss, pickles, and mustard, was created in Havana. Great sandwich. Okay, we have Brody and Randall and Cal and Yanni all very confident again. Alyssa has joined them with an answer. Now that leaves Logan and Garrett, who have yet to write something down for the sandwich, which is layered with ham, pork, Swiss.
Starting point is 00:12:47 You look unwell, Randall. I want to know what qualifies you to say Woodcock is a silly looking bird. Well, I told you they have a small chunky body with short legs, large eyes, and an enormous beak. And some native tribes said that
Starting point is 00:13:04 they look like they were made from the leftover parts of every other bird in the forest i think that's that's how it justifies saying they look what do you think mr woodcock says about you he probably thinks yeah it's probably those montana guys with the leftover of all the other humans leftover of the other meat eater personalities he's got a stupid mustache. Whoa, whoa, whoa. See, I wasn't thinking that way. I was thinking he's probably just like,
Starting point is 00:13:32 yeah, that's just a good looking human. Wears cut off jean shorts. What the hell is that guy doing? This sandwich, which is layered with ham, pork, Swiss pickles, and mustard, was created in Havana. I've had some of these down there in the Keys. You buy them, and then you get those little shot back when I used to drink coffee, those little Cuban coffees that are super strong. Captain Nick had a place he liked to go to for fishing.
Starting point is 00:13:58 Yeah, light you up, make Yanni feel no good. And those are no good. That's where your heart problems started is it cafecito what do they call them whatever you're talking I can't remember cafe Havana and Belgrade best coffee in the valley in my humble opinion I feel like that version of the sandwich is like the real version and elsewhere they're yeah they get too thick everywhere else. You know, when you get them there, it's pretty thin, thin deal.
Starting point is 00:14:29 I got a great story to tell about Odea fishing after drinking some of that coffee, but it's going to have to wait until after we're recording. Okay. Is everybody ready for the answer for the sandwich laid with ham, pork, Swiss pickles and mustard? Go ahead and reveal your answers we have cal saying cubano randall says cuban garrett and alyssa everyone says cuban or cubano and they got it the correct answer is cuban or randall cubano
Starting point is 00:15:00 i'm on a bad uh street there what was so helpful from Randall? He said Cuban. He said it. I mean, Havana isn't the question. Yeah, but you don't necessarily know where Havana is. I would hope so. So, Logan, you would not have gotten that one. No way. You heard him? You heard him say it? Yeah, he was like, oh, and they have a nice Cuban.
Starting point is 00:15:19 I was like, oh, Cuban's the answer. Thanks a lot, Randall. I didn't catch that. Although some Florida cities claim to be the birthplace of the Cuban, it was actually created in Cuba's capital city of Havana. Tampa, which has designated the Cuban as their official sandwich, serves their version with salami as a nod to the city's Italian influence. Question four.
Starting point is 00:15:42 The topic is biology, and this next great question is via Grant Berger. This six letter word is defined as, quote, the group of eggs produced by birds, amphibians or reptiles. Phil, can we bleep that out for it so I don't spoil it for the listeners at home? Sure. Thank you. I'll make a note. This six letter word is defined as the group of eggs produced by birds, amphibians, or reptiles. Did anyone else lift that clue off of Randall's
Starting point is 00:16:12 stake? No, I looked around. I wasn't paying attention. I already had my board down. I don't know what's gotten into me. Too chatty over here. You didn't have anyone to talk to on the river. I can take a couple guesses. Fresh air and sunshine, Randall. Yep, yep. A little bit of river water.
Starting point is 00:16:29 Uh-huh. This six-letter word is defined as the group of eggs produced by birds, amphibians, or reptiles. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal and Randall saying clutch. Garrett says thatch. Alyssa says clutch. Logan, without an answer, Giannis and Brody say clutch.
Starting point is 00:16:55 They got it. The correct answer is clutch. Clutch sizes will vary based on animal age, food, availability, weather, and population density. Albatross usually have a clutch size of one. Hummingbirds are two. Woodpeckers are three. Herons are four. Crows are five.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Geese are six. Mallards are 12. And ostriches are 50. My God. Whoa. Question five. The topic is fishing. Which continent are piranhas native to?
Starting point is 00:17:31 This is question five. We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil the Engineer after this. Which continent are piranhas native to? Very confident room again. I think at the turn, we're going to have a few perfect games going. Have we had any 100 percenters yet this game? We've had a few 100 percenters, I think. Well, the Cubano was a 100 percenter.
Starting point is 00:17:56 With an asterisk. That one was the 100 percenter. Our room looks confident. This may be another. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal and Randall and Garrett. The entire room says South America.
Starting point is 00:18:13 The entire room is right. The correct answer is South America. Piranhas can be found across the globe, but are only native to northern and eastern South America. Although the fish has been spotted in Florida, Louisiana, California, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service believes there are no established populations in the United States currently. Phil, we're halfway through the game of trivia. Give us a scoreboard update.
Starting point is 00:18:41 It's a pretty high-scoring game. Good job, everyone. update uh it's pretty high scoring game wow good job everyone we've got uh logan with two points cal garrett and alissa all have four garrett who's celebrating a birthday today thought he was going to be embarrassed he's holding his own happy birthday garrett and then tied up in first place are randall yannis and brody with five points logan may only have two points in trivia today but that's also how many critters he's killed this year. He filled a black bear tag, and he killed a cow elk with his bow. So he's got that going for him, at least. Well done.
Starting point is 00:19:11 That's the same amount of critters as I've killed this fall, because I've knocked down two grouts with my bow and arrow. Hey, folks, exciting news for those who live or hunt in Canada. And, boy, my goodness do we hear from the Canadians whenever we do a raffle or a sweepstakes. The great features that you love in on x
Starting point is 00:19:47 are available for your hunts this season the hunt app is a fully functioning gps with hunting maps that include public and crown land hunting zones aerial imagery 24k topo maps waypoints and tracking that's right you were always talking about uh we're always talking about OnX here on the MeatEater podcast. The topic is gear. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by John Brennick for sending this great question.
Starting point is 00:21:00 John is going to get a board game signed by the crew. If you want a chance to win our listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at the medeater.com. Jim Shockey was the first person to complete the North American Super Slam using only this type of weapon.
Starting point is 00:21:20 Jim Shockey was the first person to complete the North American Super Slam using only this type of weapon. Randall, Brody, Yanni are all very confident. You got this one right, Brody. Pretty sure. Okay. Pretty sure.
Starting point is 00:21:39 Jim Shockey? I'm aware. The hat? I understand the hat. The hat? I understand the hat. The scarf? Scarf? Yeah. The kind of one kind of weapon he mostly hunts with?
Starting point is 00:21:53 What was the buggy thing he was driving around in? What was that six-wheeled buggy he was... Argo. Oh, Argo. Oh, yeah. We saw some of those trolling around in Alaska. Those are like an amphibious vehicle.
Starting point is 00:22:08 They don't like them. There's a lot of people that don't like them in Alaska. They can sure get you places. That's why. Don't they float though too? Yeah. Again, Jim Shockey was the first
Starting point is 00:22:23 person to complete the North American Super Slam using only this type of weapon. My parents pulled me out of school because Jim and Eva visited Bozeman and they did a little signing at Sportsman's Warehouse. My freshman year out of school. Jim is currently making a little museum of his own. The Hand of Man. Hand of Man. That's right.
Starting point is 00:22:48 How is that currently? I thought he's been working on that for I think he has been working on it for a while, but I feel like it's, like I've heard some things recently that it's like it's like nearing completion. Talk to a, I won't say anymore, but it's it's a good museum. Seems like the kind of place you might visit.
Starting point is 00:23:03 I would like to visit that I think Does everybody have an answer for question 6 I'll go with you if Shelby won't go Go ahead and reveal your answers We have Cal and Randall and Garrett Saying muzzleloader Alyssa says It says blow dart
Starting point is 00:23:18 Logan says spear Giannis and Brody say muzzleloader They got it the correct answer is muzzleloader the north american super slam is where someone harvests all 29 big game animals native to the continent as of 2022 174 hunters have completed the slam lincoln tap was the youngest hunter to ever complete the slam at 20 years old chuck adams was the first person to do it with archery equipment only and shocky was the first to do it with a muzzleloader only question seven you know shocky was like immediately sponsored by an air gun company
Starting point is 00:23:56 after the muzzleloader slam yep i think the air gun cash must have fizzled out before he could go to the slam with the air gun. When those started to get popular, he went and killed a bison with one. Just to show that they are powerful. He was a Thompson Center guy, wasn't he? I thought it was Knight. Pretty sure it was Thompson Center. Is Knight like a subset of somebody or not? Doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Question seven. The topic is cooking. Spencer's keeping us moving today. Yeah, he is. Well, we started a little late. We've got another episode after this as a teaser to next week. Yanni is hosting Meat Eater Trivia. We're going to record that right when we're done here.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Softballs, baby. Softballs. Name two of the six most popular hot sauces in america according to 2023 instacart data name two of the six most popular hot sauces in america according to 2023 Instacart data. Is there more than one? Garrett says, is there more than one hot sauce? Randall, you have this one right. You're the first person to complete your answer. Boy, I hope so.
Starting point is 00:25:15 I think I have two good hot sauces. I feel like that's become like a hobby of folks in the last decade. When I go into like a novelty shopping place, they've got like a whole wall of hot sauce. Blow out your ass hot sauce. Yes. It's like beer. This is all kinds of like artisanal hot sauces. It's like wine people.
Starting point is 00:25:33 Yeah. Beer people became like wine people. I don't think wine people became hot sauce people though. The Venn diagram is an infinity sign. Steve likes to claim that beer people became like
Starting point is 00:25:49 wine people, but that didn't happen either. I don't think so. They just have new subcultures. As their interesting hobby becomes too commonplace, they just branch out. Does everybody have two hot sauces written down?
Starting point is 00:26:05 I just don't use them. I guess I'm going to go with that. I have a few of them. Do you have two of them written down, Alyssa? I do have two, but I... Go ahead and reveal your answer. We have Kalsang, Tabasco, and Frank's. Randall says Tabasco and Cholula.
Starting point is 00:26:22 Garrett says Topia and Fiesta. Alyssa says Tabasco and Cholula. Garrett says Topia and Fiesta. Alyssa says Tabasco and Cholula. Logan says Sriracha and Tabasco. Giannis says Tabasco and Cholula. Brody says Tabasco and Franks. Franks is good. The six hot sauces are Tabasco, Tapatio Texas Pete, Cholula Sriracha And Frank's Red Hot So the room did very well I think everyone but Garrett got that one right
Starting point is 00:26:55 There's really only one hot sauce And that's the meat eater hot sauce That actually is really good It's available in our stores Is it still available? I should get some I just bought some about a week ago because I can't get it for free for some reason. What the hell?
Starting point is 00:27:11 That's bullshit. Frank's. You have HR in the room. I'll talk to your supervisor, Phil. Thank you. Frank's Red Hot took the top spot in 2023, dethroning Sriracha as the most popular hot sauce in America. Market experts think Frank's is the
Starting point is 00:27:26 country's favorite hot sauce because it's actually one of the most mild hot sauces available it has a Scoville rating of just 450 with household names like sriracha coming in at 2200 and Tabasco at 2500 do you guys see there's a new food show on Apple recently? What's it? It's the one that Krista worked on. God, I forget what it's called. It's popular right now,
Starting point is 00:27:50 but they have a very good episode on hot sauce and they go, like they go over the whole history of Tabasco. It's super interesting. I think Crystal hot sauce, like every time I make gumbo,
Starting point is 00:28:02 I have to have Crystal. Crystal's a better version of Tabasco. I don't know if that's a hot take or not, but I like it better. So Frank's Red Hot is one of the most mild of the hot sauces. Question eight. The topic is hunting.
Starting point is 00:28:14 This next great question is via James Anderson. In an episode of this TV show, Badger tells Jesse he's bringing a crossbow into the desert to cook meth because, quote, we might see javelinas. Logan, Brody, Randall appear to know this one. In an episode of this TV show, Badger tells Jesse he's bringing a crossbow into the desert to cook meth because, quote, we might see javelinas.
Starting point is 00:28:44 Brody, you have this one right. I hope so. You and Cal and Yanni really flexed your pop culture chops on last week's episode of Meat Eater Radio. I think Phil took it pretty easy on us. Oh, you did that without me? You didn't watch? I was driving. Oh, that's right.
Starting point is 00:29:04 Nine hours. I forgot. Yeah. We're only going to do it. Oh, that's right. Nine hours. I forgot. Yeah. We're only going to do it without you, Randall. In an episode of this TV show, Badger tells Jesse
Starting point is 00:29:13 he's bringing a crossbow into the desert to cook meth because we might see javelinas. And in that episode of Media to Radio, all three of those guys
Starting point is 00:29:22 got all three of Phil's pop culture questions correct. Phil could have gone like... Okay. questions correct phil could have gone like okay he will he could have gone i was scared of cal and brody mostly because they're usually the curmudgeons about pop culture stuff yeah that's a whole segment though phil you're allowed to like like break right through the meat eater universe there doesn't need to be woodsmanship hunting fishing anything like that i'll keep that in mind for next time how did how did he say woodsmanship woodsmanship and it was a question about dungeons and dragons
Starting point is 00:29:53 is everybody ready go ahead and reveal your answers we have cal and randall and garrett's the entire room says breaking bad The entire room got it right. Never seen an episode. I haven't either, but I heard it was about meth. That's where it is at. That episode was supposed to take place on October 10th, 2008, which is more than two months before the earliest javelina season in New Mexico. And where they cooked meth was west of Albuquerque on the Cannon-Cito Indian Reservation, which is about 150 miles north of where most of the state's javelina population is found. So it's safe to assume that Badger didn't poach any javelina that day.
Starting point is 00:30:36 Phil, we have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update. Ooh, here we are. Wow. Logan, I'm sorry. You're out of the game Cut right to the chase Everyone else is still in here
Starting point is 00:30:48 We got Alyssa with 6 Garrett also has 6, Cal has 7 And tied up in first place, 3 way tie Randall, Giannis and Brody have 8 points It's contagious Phil went too easy with his pop culture questions And now I've gone too easy You got a game changer
Starting point is 00:31:03 I thought you'd have more energy for that We're two questions away from a three-way perfect game tie you want to come over here and no okay you think you can do what i do question nine the topic is conservation what country leads the world in boone and Crockett Coosdeer entries? What country leads the world in Boone and Crockett Coosdeer entries? We have two questions left. We have three players with a perfect game going into nine and ten. And Yanni already kind of hinted at it, but I've seen his questions. And I think the next next week's episode also might be a little soft.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I mean, Yanni had some ground to make up. Oh, I just feel so bad when I come in and I pitch a hard one because I feel like no one has fun. I think there is less fun, Head. But it's also probably less fun when
Starting point is 00:32:03 we've got three people with a perfect game. So we've just got to find the middle ground here, Yanni. And last week, I want to remind folks, we had a perfect game from Randall. So for the first time in Meat Eater Trivia history, 140 episodes in, we could have back-to-back perfect games. How many perfects is that for Randall now? Is that two or three? I think three.
Starting point is 00:32:25 Three, and he's probably got triple that for games where he's gotten nine questions. I don't like all of this hype talk. Does everybody have an answer? I feel like I've actually been in sort of a slump lately. For what country leads the world in Boone and Crockett Coos deer entries? Wouldn't perfect games benefit conservation, though? They do benefit conservation, that's right. Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:32:49 Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal saying the USA. Love your events, Master. Randall says Mexico. Garrett says Mexico. Alyssa, Mexico. Logan, Mexico. Giannis, Mexico. Brody
Starting point is 00:33:03 says Mexico. The correct answer is the United States. The perfect game is gone. You've got to be kidding me. Too much chatter. Too much chatter. The United States has 602 Coos Deer entries in the Boone and Crockett record book, while Mexico has 179.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Arizona has 538 of those, and New Mexico has 64. The world record was a 26-pointer that was killed by a member of the San Carlos Indian Reservation about 70 years ago. So little is known about that deer that Boone and Crockett doesn't even have the hunter's name or the year it was killed. Speaking of whitetails, in case you forgot, it's whitetail week here at MeatEater right now over at FirstLight.com. You can save big on our best whitetail gear. Starting point is 00:34:19 a final leaderboard up. You really pooped the bed on that last question there, Randall. I was actually going to write USA, USA, USA. It's sort of a clever. Well, because Cal is the only Patriot in the room, we've now got a four-way tie. Wow. Holy cow.
Starting point is 00:34:31 For first place. Cal, Randall, Giannis, and Brody all have eight points. Real nail-biter. Here's a correct answer review for our listeners at home. Question one was Oregon. Two, Woodcock. Three, Cuban. Four, Clutch. Five, Southcock. Three, Cuban. Four, Clutch.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Five, South America. Six, muzzleloader. Seven, Tabasco. Tapatio. Texas Pete. Cholula. Sriracha. Frank's Red Hot.
Starting point is 00:34:56 Eight, Breaking Bad. Nine, United States. Here is question 10. I actually can't believe house recipe Isn't Right like the generic house recipe brands That's not one of the leading hot sauces Great value Oh like great value
Starting point is 00:35:12 If you just type in what muzzle loader It auto fills with Does Jim Shockey use Well that's because your phone's listening to us And uh it was a Thompson Center Encore Pro You guys were right. Question 10. The topic is fishing.
Starting point is 00:35:28 This river, which connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, was declared America's Greatest Fishery by Abu Garcia. Brody and Randall appear to be very confident. Again, we have a four-way tie with Randall, Cal, Yanni, and Brody.
Starting point is 00:35:49 America's greatest fishery? Really? This river, which connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, was declared America's greatest fishery by Abu Garcia. We have Yanni trying to mine for hints over here from Brody by asking if he's fished it. Brody's response was no. Was that helpful, Yanni? No.
Starting point is 00:36:12 Okay. These kind of things just show how I'm not very well traveled. Yeah, if it gets east of the Gallatin River. Just a Montana farm boy You're not wrong It's the Yellowstone Give him some credit No I mean like east of the Yellowstone
Starting point is 00:36:35 Randall I'm not sure about my answer It's either that or the Erie Canal I was going Erie Canal Randall likes his answer. Yanni is going to his whiteboard. Everyone knows the fishing
Starting point is 00:36:51 is great in the Erie Canal. This river, which connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, was declared America's greatest fishery by Abu Garcia. Keep in mind, Abu Garcia is a Swedish company I think yeah so what do they know well they know when its Swedish predecessor AB or Fabrikan merged with its U.S based distributor you
Starting point is 00:37:20 remember trivia question Randall I wrote written by Randall That was a good question they had a panel of ten Expert fishermen who helped them rank the best fisheries and they created a top 100 list We're looking for what is number one here is everybody ready? Brody you got this one right? I don't know okay Randall. Do you have this one right? I don't know. Okay, Randall, do you have this one right? I think so. Yanni? Oh, I just had another river name popping in my head. Okay. I'm thinking about changing. I'm focusing on the geography, not the...
Starting point is 00:37:55 Connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. Yeah, if you'd asked me to just name America's greatest fishery, this would not have come to mind. I'll be perfectly honest. Give me some extra help. Yanni is going back to his whiteboard. This is your last chance, Yanni, to change that answer before we flip him over. I don't like that.
Starting point is 00:38:14 I'm going to stick with it. Cal, are you ready? I'm sure. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal saying the Delaware River. I don't even know if I have that. Randall says St. Lawrence. I don't even know if this is a river. Garrett says River. Randall says St. Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:38:26 Garrett says Ohio. Alyssa says Hudson. Logan without an answer. Giannis says St. Lawrence. Brody says St. Lawrence. The correct answer is the St. Lawrence River, meaning we're going to overtime with Randall, Yanni, and Brody. As the primary outflow of the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence has the second highest discharge of any river in North America. Abu Garcia ranked their top 100 American fisheries in 2022,
Starting point is 00:38:58 with the top five being the St. Lawrence, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, the Red River, and Santee Cooper. We're headed to overtime. Play the drop, Phil. Time breaker. If you ain't first, you're last. I think just cut it at, if you ain't first, you're last, and then go into other stuff that's funny. I never liked it.
Starting point is 00:39:20 Hey, Phil, f*** off, man. Question 11, the time-breaking question, will be a numerical question. Whoever is closest between our three players left will be declared the winner, but everyone in the room is going to play along because if somebody gets it right on the nose, MeatEater will add an extra $100 donation to the end of the game. The topic is outdoors. What does a one-year, 12-issue subscription of Game & Fish magazine cost? This is right from their website.
Starting point is 00:39:49 This isn't like if you ordered from a cheerleader who came to your front door selling magazine subscriptions. Currently. Currently. That's right. This is from their website. What does a one-year, 12-issue subscription of Game & Fish magazine cost? And you're going to write it to two decimal points. So if you think it's $100.10, you would write $100.10.
Starting point is 00:40:13 What'd you write? Yanni and Brody are comparing answers. I'm just trying to, like, get Randall nervous. It's a good guess, by the way. Oh, okay. Brody likes Yanni's guess. We have Randall going back to his whiteboard. He's thinking about making a change.
Starting point is 00:40:42 Cal said it was... You are still on Rivertown. Woo! Cal said it was... You are still on Rivertown. Uh-huh. Is everybody ready? What does a one-year, 12-issue subscription of Game & Fish magazine cost? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Cal
Starting point is 00:41:00 saying $15.99. Is that $99 or $91? $99. Cal saying $15.99. Is that $99 or $91? $99. Cal saying $15.99. Randall says $44.99. Garrett says $74.99. Alyssa says $44.95. Logan says $29.99. Yanni says $24.95.
Starting point is 00:41:23 And Brody says $13.99 So the gulf between Brody's answer And Randall's answer Is about $30 I feel like they give you a big discount If you're getting a whole year It's not a high priced magazine One of you is within $2
Starting point is 00:41:40 With the correct answer The correct answer Is $12 making Brody our winner. Fucking issue. What a bargain. In this economy? Oh my god. But that's the thing. They're not trying to make money. Yeah, they make their money
Starting point is 00:41:55 through ads, not through you getting a subscription. Magazine business is tough. Game and Fish. It's hard to find cheaper entertainment for a dollar. Game and Fish offers four different hard to find cheaper entertainment for a dollar. Game and Fish offers four different regions to select from when creating a subscription and for another $9 you can get 10 issues
Starting point is 00:42:12 of Bowhunter Magazine. Our game is over. Brody is our winner with nine correct answers and besting Yanni and Randall in overtime. Brody, where is the $500 donation from me to go? we just had a little chat with bha today about the malarkey going on in utah um trying to steal public lands so we're
Starting point is 00:42:35 gonna give it to bha so they can keep fighting that issue now folks didn't hear that episode cal give us a little synopsis of what's happening in Utah with public lands. Yeah, currently the state of Utah, and it is literally the state of Utah, has an active lawsuit against the federal government questioning the constitutionality of federal ownership, specifically of Bureau of Land Management lands, about 18 million acres in the state of Utah. However, the repercussions of their questioning lands within the borders of Utah is a nationwide issue. Um, basically, uh, they're suing to dispose of lands that we all dispose of sell, sell. Right. And I know some people are kind of licking their chops over that, like, Oh my God, I'm going to'm gonna get in there and but the reality is is like you are going to be bidding against other foreign powers so no matter how much cash you and the fam got in your pocket uh it's not gonna stack up till uh xi jinping so certain states are known for like certain hunting cultures.
Starting point is 00:43:45 Why, why is it that Utah has a reputation for like changing hands of public lands and trying to change federal ownership to state ownership? Um, you know, it's, it's a good question. I always laugh at the fact that like you go through the Salt Lake city airport, which anybody who travels in the West, like you go through the Salt Lake City airport and all they do is celebrate these big Utah landscapes, which reside on federally managed lands and their track record of disposing of their own state lands, uh, for pennies on the dollar, uh, is, is right there for everybody to see. So go, go check that out.
Starting point is 00:44:24 If you don't, don't believe the hype that this is a disposal play. Basically a money making play. Brody sending $500 to BHA to help fight that lawsuit. Join us next week for more Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins.
