Flores will challenge your understanding of the American West and he will help to explain why it is the way it is today. I count Dan Flores as a friend. Starting point is 00:01:32 the MeatEater Podcast Network. Subscribe to the American West with Dan Flores on Apple, Spotify, iHeart or wherever you get your podcast listen to Dan and it will stretch your brain all out and I mean that in a very good way welcome to meat eater trivia the only game show where conservation always wins I'm your host Spencer Newarth and today we're joined by Yannis, Randall, Nate, Anthony, Seth, and Corey. This is a 10 round quiz show with questions for Meat Eaters 4 Verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking, and there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing.
Starting point is 00:02:23 And for the start of the week this week, we're looking at our donation tracker. Through 165 games of meat eater trivia, we've donated to 68 different conservation organizations and chapters. The most popular choices have been TRCP, NWTF, BHA, Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management, and the Meat Eater Land Access Initiative. Of those 68 orgs, 23 of them have received a single $500 donation from Meat Eater Trivia. Randall, I think you're a big part of that. I think you spread out the most money.
Starting point is 00:02:55 Yeah, I was just trying to find, I had a couple new requests come in. I was trying to dig up the names of those before I get started here. So if you win today, it's gonna be a 24th new organization It depends on how cocky bastard depends on how reasonably I can work my way through my Instagram messages Does everybody else hear themselves? Well, I feel like I'm I feel like I can't hear myself This one sounds good. Well, I can hear you loud and clear Think it's only I can try plugging it in now. I'm in my head. Oh This is gonna be a bad cranking some knobs over here and see what happens. If you're in your head this early, that's a tough, tough day for Randall. Yeah, I think it's good to spread it around, get back on subject here. You know, there's a lot of people doing great work for fish and wildlife all around this country and a lot of those smaller groups out there, 500 bucks goes a long way. Yeah, you're so noble. Yeah, hit up Randall. He'll keep that going. All right, here's our infrequently asked question segment.
Starting point is 00:03:51 If you have a trivia related question for our crew, send it to trivia at themediteor.com with the subject line IFAQ. This one is an FAQ. This is the question I probably get the most. Why don't you have meat to podcast guests play trivia anymore It's been a while since we've had a podcast guest play trivia. There's a few reasons I think you're getting a worse show if We are asking the people in the room to do a media to podcast which will go like two and a half hours And then immediately after play media to trivia. You're just getting worse energy. I think
Starting point is 00:04:23 You're probably not getting as good of answers as good of banter I think it's harder on Phil over there to transition from like one show to the next show Yeah, that's a good point Is it Phil? It's gotta be something Thanks for thinking of me Spencer. It's really not not that difficult There's pros and cons I think. The way that both meet that the meat eater podcast is produced is a lot different than it was however many years
Starting point is 00:04:50 ago when we had players doing that more more often like like for example this episode we're recording today is airing tomorrow whereas the meat eater podcast sometimes will record one and it won't drop for three to four weeks. Yes scheduling would get really weird with those episodes as well I I think we are doing the audience more justice by not Cramming it in the same like afternoon as we do the regular show you get a better Yannis a better Randall I think it's more fun. You have any thoughts on that? No, I agree with the energy. I
Starting point is 00:05:26 can see that, but I also like the energy of having someone fresh in the room. That's good. There's like a new camaraderie that has to be established almost though. When it's like we throw a stranger. Yeah, and I think Nate doesn't like to talk if we have a stranger here and we want more Nate. It has to be the way I've guessed too. I've never been to a stranger. There's some guests that I'd be interested in playing trivia with. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:53 A lot of them I'm not. Yes, exactly. And I throw them a bone and that helps. But there's often times where it's like they get the bone right and maybe one or two more questions and it's not necessarily fun to embarrass them either And so I either like have to make the show Something it's not or they sit there and probably don't have a lot of fun playing trivia like Anthony But you're fine embarrassing like Nate and Anthony. Oh, yeah sure. I don't think they're on the payroll
Starting point is 00:06:20 Nate doesn't get embarrassed never make you get embarrassed. No, that's the opposite of what I do I know if the right guess rolls through here, we'll plug them into meat eater trivia as well, but I would just say don't expect it. Yeah, we don't want the main pod dragging this thing down. This is an elevated product. We have some housekeeping to get to in our last episode of trivia. I had a multiple choice question about which state harvests the most deer between Georgia, Kansas, Ohio, and South Carolina. The correct answer was Georgia, but in the flavor text, I read the deer population of those states, not the deer harvest. Now this doesn't change the correct answer, Georgia still harvests the most deer out of those four states, but I want to give
Starting point is 00:06:59 the accurate numbers here. Georgia harvests 270,000 deer each year. South Carolina and Ohio harvests 200,000 and Kansas harvests 80,000. Georgia is sixth in the nation for total deer harvest each year. Wow. Damn son, I want to take a trip down to Georgia. You buy a tag, you get 10 does and two bucks. Kansas was 80? Unlimited picks. 80,000. There's a reason they grow their big deer so big. I would have got that wrong. So nobody's killing them all. Check. Check. How's it sound over there? We can give you some live sound checking over here. Check. Check. I think Spencer would love that. I think it's fine. You don't have to wear the headphones either.
Starting point is 00:07:37 I know, but I like hearing the headphones. Okay. Let's just go. All right, the Shelby index for today is a five. So I'm putting us on perfect score alert and with that we're on to the game of trivia play the drop Phil. Oh Nice Sorry, I just got a slack from Corinne and I was trying to turn the lights off on my phone and it covered the switch Sorry about that out Game on, suckers! Question one, the topic is fishing, and this will be multiple choice.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Which of these world record fish is smallest? Is it brook trout, yellow bullhead, chain pickerel or yellow perch? Did you have this question but different species I've done this question a few different ways I've done biggest I've done smallest swamp the species in and out which of these world record fish is smallest by weight or length by weight or brook trout mmm yellow bullhead chain pickerel yellow perch that is by weight Phil is now adjusting a camera
Starting point is 00:08:47 I'm gonna need a little more time what's the problem? Sorry Anthony, we were gonna, hold on, let me get on mic here okay which of these world record fish is smallest? Four choices, brook trout, yellow bullhead, chain pickerel, yellow perch and that is measured by weight we recorded some kids trivia for an
Starting point is 00:09:03 upcoming season of the Meant to Eat Your Kids podcast and some kids got too excited and kicked that camera the other day and I forgot to adjust it. Oh Was it my kid that would be the King jabroni, Jr. It was either Marshall or no, it wasn't Marshall I think I think it was sage Calling you out sage World record fish is smallest brook trout yellow bullhead chain pickerel yellow perch This is a tough question to start a potential perfect game with Players are going to have to earn this one Cory. Are you ready? Yep?
Starting point is 00:09:34 Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Yana saying pickerel Says perch Randall says perch Anthony says perch Nate says pickerel Nate says pickerel. Cory says pickerel. The correct answer is yellow perch! About half the room got that one right. The world record brook trout is 14 pounds 8 ounces. The world record chain pickerel is 9 pounds 6 ounces. The world record yellow bullhead is 6 pounds 6 ounces. And the world record yellow perch is 4 pounds 3 ounces. The world record yellow bullhead is six pounds six ounces. And the world record yellow perch is four pounds three ounces. It was caught by
Starting point is 00:10:09 Dr. C. Abbott in Borden town New Jersey in 1865 making it the world's longest standing record for a freshwater fish. Freshwater fish. Wow. Four pounds three ounces. New Jersey doesn't even recognize that as their record anymore. It's under a different category. The only fish in that category, it's called the retired state record. So they stopped recognizing that 1865 catch. What's the current? Oh, it's like half that.
Starting point is 00:10:42 For New Jersey? Yeah, it's like two pounds something. Question two, the topic is conservation. This next great question is via Matthew Stover. This two word term is defined as, quote, the practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research. Question two, the topic is conservation. This two word term is defined as the practice
Starting point is 00:11:10 of public participation and collaboration in scientific research. Nate Corey Randall, all quick to answer this one. Yanni, do you have this one right? I've got one of the words in the two word term. Again question two via Matthew Stover. This two word term is defined as the practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research. I'm guessing the state of New Jersey thinks there's something fishy with that 1865 record purge for them to retire that. You'll find that some states will do that. My home state of South Dakota had a fraud channel catfish state record for like 60 years. They had a picture of it.
Starting point is 00:11:56 I think it was caught in the 1950s, but you look at the picture and you could tell by the anal fin that it was a blue catfish, not a channel catfish. And so people had brought this to their attention enough that they finally retired it one day and started it back at zero. My guess is New Jersey thinks that world record fish
Starting point is 00:12:16 maybe wasn't real kosher. Yeah, if questions about how that scale was standardized. IGFA recognizes it as the world record hmm Again, we're on question two this two-word term is defined as a practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research Was there a photo of it of the world? I couldn't I didn't see one online Maybe it exists, but I didn't hunt too hard. Hmm say that was in the 1800s 1865 Yeah, there's some shady stuff going on. Yeah, he was like... He thought he could pull a fast one while the nation was mourning Abraham
Starting point is 00:12:50 Lincoln. Yeah, the United States was like half of its size that it is now. Is everybody ready? That's where they held John Wilkes' roof. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Janis saying Citizen Science. Seth says Public Comment. Randall says Citizen Science. Anthony, Survey Results. Nate, Public Comment. Corey, Citizen Science. The correct answer is Citizen Science. I think half our players got that one right.
Starting point is 00:13:18 Citizen Science is when volunteers help scientists gather data. It's most commonly used to collect weather information and track animal populations. Some examples of citizen science include the National Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count, the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project, and the Horseshoe Crab Count. Mountain Goat Counts, the Rocky Mountain Goat Alliance. You participate in that one every year, don't you? That's a good one.
Starting point is 00:13:43 No, I have in the past, but it's tough to line those up with my schedule. Busy guy. Busy guy. Busy guy. Reading his Instagram DMs about conservation. Yep. You're getting DMs? Yeah, I get some DMs. Wow. Question three. The topic is hunting. You DMs, bro? Name one of the two states with a bighorn sheep as their state animal no Randall got very excited about this question threw his chair back and knocked something off the wall what did what did we break that was clay spaceman job is everything in one piece yet the frames not in one piece Oh, no backer in the glass. Oh wow Okay, it was a very impressive
Starting point is 00:14:34 Piece of art done by clay. I should be hung on the wall. Yeah, he did this in high How's the heck of a reaction Randall oh clay actually made that clay drew that I think he drew it when he was pretty young He had a dream of like a stormtrooper looking character hunting a hog So he had to put pen to paper and that's what he created Oh, yeah, that was back in Clay's hippie days. So glad that I now know the backstory Again question three name one of the two states with the bighorn sheep as their state animal Randall has spent most of his time Fixing the damage. He's done over there instead of writing down an answer this may throw him off. No
Starting point is 00:15:13 Have you been to that museum Rollins, Wyoming that has the Is it the boots made out of the guy's big nose George? He knows I have not been to the museum. Oh, you should go my wife went this past week She's down there for work highly recommended. Okay, I like Rollins Coolie Rollins. I do like Rollins a lot of antelope there. I did some rockhounding there My wife got stung by a rattlesnake there two times when we were not counting some nice wild horses She got bit stung or no no well about got bit twice Two different times the same day while we were looking for rocks. Are you saying like she got?
Starting point is 00:15:51 Bit, but it didn't matter like it like she's reaching down to grab a rock and a rattlesnake is within like inches of the rock I'm going for I thought you said stone Like a bee I think thought you said stun too. Everybody thought that. Name one of the two states with a bighorn sheep as their state. I think I know one. Okay, is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Starting point is 00:16:16 We have Yannisang, Nevada. He crossed out Colorado. Seth says Wyoming. Randall says Colorado. Anthony, Colorado., Nate Wyoming, Corey Colorado. Correct answers are Colorado and Nevada. Damn did well. Colorado declared the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep
Starting point is 00:16:37 their state animal in 1961, and Nevada declared the desert bighorn sheep their state animal in 1973. Both states also feature a bighorn sheep their state animal in 1973. Both states also feature a bighorn sheep in their Department of Wildlife logo. Question four, the topic is public lands and this next great question is via Tyler Sheffield. This national park, which is located in Kentucky,
Starting point is 00:17:01 is home to the world's longest known cave system. in Kentucky is home to the world's longest known cave system. Randall is now actually repairing the frame. I just wanted to provide some noise. This national park, which is located in Kentucky, is home to the world's longest known cave system. Randall, getting more juice in those headphones, I tried to... Yeah, yeah, it actually sounds much better, Phil, thank you.
Starting point is 00:17:28 Oh, you're welcome, anytime. Yanni was talking about Big Nose George. There was a handbag that was made out of his skin. There were boots made out of his skin. Well, the guy that had the boots made... The doctor. Right, but he wanted to have the nipples on him so that he could prove that they were legit and
Starting point is 00:17:47 And whoever sent him off and did and they were like no man you crossed the line We'll do it out of human skin, but not with the nipples I think his his skull wound up as an ashtray of someone's yeah another part of his skull I think was a doorstop from some well know somebody that's the same part is the top part of his skull. I think was a doorstop from some well No, somebody that's the same part is the top part of his skull and again This is just from what my wife learned last week But some gal had it and she it was a multi-purpose item and doorstop ashtrays platoon the body had been stuffed into a
Starting point is 00:18:22 Whiskey barrel buried for many years when it when they've recovered it the two were matched up To bring it bring it back together. I love the story of big nose George he was uh, he was a cattle rustler by Miles City right who then Later had a robbery get out of hand this national park Which is located in Kentucky is home to the world's longest known cave system Randall. Do you have this one right? Yes Cory do you have this one right, but I didn't fix the frame okay? Got it my answer is better than Seth's
Starting point is 00:19:04 Seth has a blank whiteboard in front of him. Oh. I don't know what's going on down there in Kentucky. Yeah, Seth is still in Alaska. I wish. This national park, which is located in Kentucky, is home to the world's longest known cave system. Yanni, you give up? Oh, no, I don't want to give up. How was the fishing in Alaska, Seth? Well, the days we could actually get out and do some legit
Starting point is 00:19:31 fishing, it was alright. Scale of 1 to 10. Well, I would put it at like a 5. It's never as good as it is in the summer. We got some halibut got some ling cod that were over the slot. My wife caught like a 47 ish 48 inch And yellow perch no no perch Yeah, lots of lots of Pacific cod and rockfish and We got to halibut the whole time and your story bought Yanni enough time to come up with an answer is everybody I had This answer earlier. I don't think it's right. Go ahead and reveal your answers We have Yanis saying mammoth Seth without an answer Randall says mammoth cave Anthony Daniel Boone
Starting point is 00:20:17 National Park Nate says what's it say not the right answer Corey says Blue Ridge the correct answer Mammoth Cave National Park. What do you guys think about Yanni? I think he got it. Okay, Yanni's got it. It'd be like saying the Grand National Park instead of Grand Canyon.
Starting point is 00:20:37 Nah. Nah. Okay, he gets the point. Mammoth's the most important. There are more than 400 miles of known caves in Mammoth Cave National Park, making it twice as long as the next closest cave. Geologists believe there could be another 600 miles of tunnels in the national park
Starting point is 00:20:54 that have yet to be discovered. Oh, spooky. Question five. Is there a Daniel Boone National Forest? Yes. That makes me feel better. Question five, the topic is biology. This seven-letter word is defined as, quote, Is it the that form the color and patterns of a particular bird. Nate, Cory, Randall, all quick to answer Seth and Yanni are joining them. That means Anthony is the
Starting point is 00:21:32 only one with a blank whiteboard. Can I offer you something for your hosting toolkit? Sure, yeah. Instead of giving 0 to 10, you should give them a negative 5 to 5 scale. I. Oh, okay. I've heard that this has been brought up by Nate with other... Oh, really? I'm on a mission to change the... Why, why? Please explain.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Well, if you go 0 to 10, you basically feel obligated to give it a 5 or above. Mmm. You just, it's not a real... and then like if it was a really bad time... Mmm. There's not a great way to communicate that because two is still positive Hmm, so if you go negative five to five zero is like perfectly neutral good come or go it doesn't matter yeah You know if you enjoyed it, then you give it a one I feel like though if Spencer asked me that question for the fishing then I said zero that would have made it sound like I
Starting point is 00:22:20 Caught zero fish well you were you perfectly ambivalent to the fishing do you have an okay time? Had a great time then you probably give it like a three If you went in cut, you know, it's an eight on a scale of one to ten if that's my terrible take me That's my point. Yeah What would you give a day where you cut zero fish, You know what they say about the worst day of fishing? Beats the best day working here a Scale that's a scale that does need adjustment is like product reviews of one to five stars That's my point because if something was like just didn't show up at all right like say was worst case scenario
Starting point is 00:23:04 Didn't arrive in the mail that should be a zero, but you have to give it a one. That's what I'm saying. Yeah, or like restaurant reviews. If you really didn't like it, that's a hard negative five. That's what I'm saying. Okay. I could go with that, but fishing, yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:16 I don't do much restaurant reviews. Same. Again, this seven letter word is defined as all the feathers that form the color and patterns of a particular bird. Is everybody ready? Do you want to hear my one and only restaurant review story? I gave one to a restaurant in town and some-
Starting point is 00:23:32 On what, like Google Yelp? Yeah, I don't- probably just Google, I think. But it's such bad customer service. The food was mediocre too, but the kid told me that they normally don't melt cheese on the nachos I'm like you gotta be kidding me dude like Unmelted cheese on nachos is not a thing And he was making it sound like oh no at this establishment It is and he was kind of giving me some slack about it
Starting point is 00:23:57 Which is which just got me fired up enough to post it well like a month or two later a guy that works for us as a contractor is like, Oh, I was talking to my buddy who owns X and he's like, what's up with that Yana's guy? Did you leave it one star? I just said, I told him what I just told you. I don't even know how many stars I left him, but it was disappointing. Because the star system is so confusing. I left them, but it was yeah, it was this starting system so confusing exactly Go ahead and reveal your answers we have Yanni and
Starting point is 00:24:35 Seth I spell the rain wrong saying plumage Anthony says the look Nathan Corey say plumage they got it the correct answer is Plumage the plumage of a bird serves many functions such as insulation camouflage display and of course flying An individual's plumage will change based on the weather breeding age diet and molting Phil we're halfway through the game of trivia. Give us a scoreboard update Tough game for intern Nate. He's got one point on the board Claring that last week he beat Randall in his car playing trivia. No we have no proof. Seth and Anthony actually points a piece. It's not intern Nate it's intern having Nate because he's got an intern. That had to be the quickest half turn. The quickest anyone's ever gone from being an intern to having an intern. Good for you. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:25:27 Proud of you. New money now. But I have one point, so I'll hang my head in shame. Cory's got three, Janis has four, and with a perfect game, it's Dr. Randall Williams with five points. Oh, the yellow perch. You searched for your informant who disappeared without a trace.
Starting point is 00:25:50 You knew there were witnesses, but lips were sealed. You swept the city, driving closer to the truth, while curled up on the couch with your cat. There's more to imagine when you listen. Discover heart-pounding thrillers on Audible. Steve Rinella here. Question six, the topic is conservation.
Starting point is 00:27:32 This is our listener question of the week, which was won by Easton Johnson. Sending this great question. Easton is going to get a board game signed by the crew. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week and send your question to trivia at the meat eater.com. This musician who died in 2023 founded the conservation group save the manatee club. This musician who died in 2023 founded the conservation group save the Manatee Club. I think this guy's dead. I'm gonna put down a musician and I have no clue if he's dead or not.
Starting point is 00:28:10 My wife gave an answer of someone who was not dead. So, see if anyone can join her. Kid Rock's still alive. This musician who died in 2023 founded the conservation group. He's kind of thriving. I think he's doing better than ever, honestly. Is he really? Yeah. Found it God's face. He's kind of throughout these do better than ever honestly It's very subjective yeah, well yeah, yeah, you think he's a big manatee fan We have to tell You don't like manatees you get the hell out of here. I Would like to I would like to taste the manatee one day and died in 2020 Yeah, the good see cows did the conservation group save the manatee club manatee rib eye?
Starting point is 00:28:48 Mmm. I mean I bet the whole thing. It's like a real vibe. I don't know. It might be behind the broken painting I think clay might be 2023 clay might be the only guy I know that takes things from his dreams and writes about them, draws pictures about them, and then things happen that, you know, come to fruition after he's had the dream. His dreams come true. I've never had a dream about a big buck. I'm waiting for that though If I have one, I'm definitely gonna write a story about it and draw a picture. Okay. Hmm Have you ever had dreams? My dreams are vivid enough. Like I've dreamt about hunting and fishing and like
Starting point is 00:29:37 You know finding a really special mushroom But it's like it doesn't stick with me to where I could Come out of that experience and draw a picture of it or write a story about it All of my dreams involved me doing heinous thing And then I'm wracked by guilt. It's like it's like it's like crime and punishment Yeah, and I'm my own little Raskolnikov. You just got to walk around with that and then I wake up and I'm already anxious little Raskolnikov. You just got to walk around with that. And then I wake up and I'm already anxious.
Starting point is 00:30:07 Oh, for the day start. I know that back to. This musician who died in 2023 founded the conservation group, Save the Manatee Club. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Janis and Seth and Randall saying Jimmy Buffett. Anthony says kiss Nate says Elton John who's still alive. Cory says Jimmy Buffett. The correct answer is Jimmy Buffett. All right.
Starting point is 00:30:36 Buffett founded the org in 1981 along with Florida's governor Bob Graham. The group's mission is to protect manatees and their habitat. Jimmy admired the animal and was once quoted saying, To me, the manatee represents what we all like about Florida, kind of cruising in warm, clear water and not bothering anybody. Kid Rock would never say that about manatee. No, no. Question seven, the topic is fishing. This next great question is via John Schlesinger. Which species of salmon is also known as king salmon?
Starting point is 00:31:12 Which species of salmon is also known as king salmon Cory and Randall quick to answer this might keep the perfect game for Randall going through seven questions. Oh, mr. Black gums That's what we like to call him. I should know this. You should. We just call him, we just call him King. Which species of salmon is also known as King Salmon? I need Randall the falter.
Starting point is 00:31:36 Aren't you getting anxious? Me? No, Randall. Yeah. Why are you looking at me? He stays anxious. Yeah, he was out of my sight picture. So then there's no getting anxious. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:46 I don't know this one. Which species of salmon is also known as King Salmon? Do you know this one, Yanni? I think so. I think the other salmon species would be trickier. Oh, sure.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Hmm. Hint. Maybe a hint? Oh sure Yeah, hmm Which species of salmon? Randall used to be a guide for these I think so He knows Oh wait, he's growling now He ain't not wrong Cory was maybe the first player to have an answer and now he's changed his
Starting point is 00:32:20 That's okay Intern having Nate though is stumped Cory when you you had that tattoo done, did he do it? And then you're like, you know what make that fourth just a little bit longer. No, that's actually the logo for the guide school that I went to Royal Time guide school Shout out to Cody and Loray Henson, Pberg, Montana. Hmm. They raised some good guides there Huh a few how many it's kind of in your blood the best in the industry if I'm judging by present company How many days did you? Spend it said guide school four weeks
Starting point is 00:32:57 Twenty-five five scaler. Yeah, it's just great They're not a pet mostly learn how to pack on horses and mules. Right? Yeah I've asked Cory this before But I've interviewed Hundreds of whitetail guides for like articles and Rutfresh radio and stuff like that And I found that a lot of whitetail guides like know their property better than they know dear And so if you had a guide in Iowa whose clients always killed 150 inch bucks,
Starting point is 00:33:29 if you took him out of that little habitat and dumped him on a piece of public land in Oklahoma or Kentucky, they would struggle. I found more guides were like that kind of person than they were just like a killer whitetail hunter. Courtney says, elk guides though, they're all killer elk hunters. You agree with that?
Starting point is 00:33:48 Yeah. You think so? I mean, knowing your country still behooves you big time, but yeah, it's not quite as nuanced, I think, as that. Oh. As the whitetail game. Okay, let's end that conversation there. I like that, Yanni. Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:34:06 Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Yanis saying Chinook Seth says coho Randall says Chinook Anthony coho Nate sockeye Corey Atlantic Dude, I don't know crap about fishing, dude. The correct answer is a Chinook. So we had Yanis and Randall. Get that one right.
Starting point is 00:34:30 Chinook salmon are the largest of the Pacific salmon. In the ocean, they have a blue, green back and silver sides. And in freshwater, they turn olive brown, red, or purple. They have black pigment along their gum line, which has led to the other nickname. Oh, Mr. Black Gums. Yeah, black gums or black mouth. Randall said that before we even got to the flavor. I didn't think that would give it away. That would not. That didn't. Question eight, the topic is cooking. Oh, this five letter brand claims to be the quote, oldest and longest running cast iron manufacturer in the United States.
Starting point is 00:35:09 Nate and Randall and Anthony all confident about this one. This five letter brand claims to be the oldest and longest running cast iron manufacturer in the United States. They claim to be or they are? Well, I can't you know necessarily check This is what they say on their website. I didn't thoroughly investigate all the cast iron Manufacturers to see when they were founded if you would have said it
Starting point is 00:35:34 They are the oldest you would have gotten a lot of pushback maybe so then that's why we say they're covering our bases That's why lawyers write these questions. That's yeah Yeah, I think I can only name Maybe one other And how many cast iron companies can you name? I got three we're not real knowers. I got two Impressive. Yeah, should we everybody ready contest? Yeah a little side bet go for it right down Go ahead and reveal your answers We have Yanis and Seth and Randall and Anthony and Nate and Corey saying Lodge they got it the correct answer for Yanni Lodge
Starting point is 00:36:13 Lodge was founded in Tennessee by Joseph Lodge in 1896 the company was originally called Black Lock and focused on making tea kettles and kitchen sinks They changed the industry in 2002 when they became the first brand to sell seasoned cast iron cookware Prior to that cast iron was sold unseasoned with a thin layer of wax that had to be washed off at home Hmm, Phil. Let's get a scoreboard update. We have two questions left We got Nate. Still in last place with two points. Anthony has three. Seth has four.
Starting point is 00:36:49 Cory has five. And the two players left in the game are Giannis Poutelis with seven and Randall Williams with eight. Question nine. The topic is natural history. Oh yeah. Oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:37:00 This Native American who served as a translator for the Mayflower had a Disney movie made about him in 1994. Randall has already answered this one. This Native American who served as a translator for the Mayflower had a Disney movie made about him in 1994. The him really throws you off. Yeah, cause the only translator that we know is a female.
Starting point is 00:37:36 Randall, do you have this one right? Yes. But I was trying to come up with the real spelling. Oh, okay. He does know this one. This Native American who served as a translator for the Mayflower had a Disney movie made about him in 1994. Tricky spelling, that's a hint.
Starting point is 00:37:56 Phil, have you ever seen this movie? I have not. Randall, have you ever seen this movie? I have not. Again, this is question nine. If Randall has this one right right which it seems that he does This would keep his perfect game going into the final question Nate do you have this one right? I think so but
Starting point is 00:38:16 You know the silver lining of this game is now. I know I can't dress like a slob and come in here and perform Yeah, maybe in the middle like a turttleneck? Like a zero. No, just like normal. You don't have to dress up. You don't have to dress up. Just dress like a zero. Like a zero. What's that mean? Negative five. Negative five. I'm like a negative three right now. Mmm. Those are nice clothes. I got socks and stocks on. Okay, yeah, that's weird. Socks and what? Birkenstocks. Yeah. This Native American who served as a translator for the Mayflower had a Disney movie made about him in
Starting point is 00:38:52 1994 my kids say that it's only cool to wear the Crocs or stocks with socks And then if you go barefooted that you're an old guy pervert that That's true, but I don't think they're talking about white ankle socks and Birkenstocks. No, that's what they were About socks and Crocs Crocs guy is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. What's that say Yanni? Etienne brulee Seth without answer, Randall says Squanto. Anthony, without an answer, Nate says Squanto.
Starting point is 00:39:31 Courtney says Lilo and Stitch. The correct answer is Squanto or to Squantum. Squanto was kidnapped by an English explorer in 1614 and spent five years in Europe before returning home to America in 1619. He served as a liaison between tribes in southern New England and the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620. The Disney movie about his life only made three million dollars at the box office and was considered a commercial failure. Randall has the perfect game going into question 10. He's already wrapped up the victory.
Starting point is 00:40:10 We'll see if we can double today's donation. Question 10, the topic is hunting. Which Canadian province has a subspecies of elk named after it? Which Canadian province has a subspecies of elk named after it? Softball. Which Canadian province has a subspecies of elk named after it? Randall already has his answer. Randall, do you have this one right? I believe so. Okay. Janice also confident. Which Canadian province has a subspecies of elk named after it? And Randall is so confident, he is farming his Instagram DMS right now See what the newest org he's going to donate to will be a thousand dollar donation. Yeah
Starting point is 00:40:52 Oh, well, let's not count our proverbial chickens before they proverbially hatch. Okay Which Canadian province is a subspecies of elk named after it? Does everybody have an answer? No province is a subspecies of elk named after it does everybody have an answer no no you best obvious one or tricky well Yanni declared it obvious but so far him and Randall are the only ones who have any confidence so I don't think this is an obvious one so subspecies still alive not gonna give you anything which Canadian province Is the subspecies still alive? Not going to give you anything. That can be helpful. Which Canadian province has a subspecies of health named after it?
Starting point is 00:41:30 Is everybody ready? Ready as I'll ever be. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Janice saying Manitoba. Seth without an answer. Randall says Yukon. Anthony says Spencer Smiley. Nate says Saskatchewan Cory says Roosevelt the correct answer is
Starting point is 00:41:51 Manitoba oh man Randall did not counting Alaska Yukon Aww, come on. Choked right at the last second. Oh wow. And he's found joy in this mistake that he made. Oh. Well he's only found that because I got the last number nine wrong. The six subspecies of elk are
Starting point is 00:42:16 the extinct merriam and eastern elk and the rocky mountain Roosevelt, Tule, and Manitoban elk. The historic range of Manitoban elk extends The historic range of Manitoban elk extends from central Alberta to North Texas, but they're almost exclusively found in Saskatchewan and Manitoba today.
Starting point is 00:42:32 Compared to Rocky Mountain elk, Manitoban elk have a larger body and smaller antlers. So they are still around, they are not yet extinct. And I think that they used Manitoban elk to stock North Carolina recently. So the distribution of them is very strange if you were to look at a map Randall five hundred dollar donation thousand conservation org is going to be very disappointed in you Randall if you had actually read it as elk and not moose would you have gotten it yeah Yeah, but it's it's a worthwhile reminder
Starting point is 00:43:07 to not That's what I tell my 12 year old and he goes to school read the whole prompt To get to Instagram who's getting the $500 today Randall the $500 will go to the Connecticut River Valley chapter of Delta waterfowl of Massachusetts oh wow all right what do they got going on they are a new chapter and they're hosting their first event on June 21st in the form of a kill balsa shoot it's not much different than your standard turkey shoot they're raising money to grow the chapter and build hen tubes and wood duck boxes
Starting point is 00:43:47 and working on an effective nest predator management program in Western Massachusetts. Okay, $500 going to a new org for us and a new org just in general. Sorry guys, we'll get you again. Think of all the ducks you could have saved if you had gotten that one right. You got the win, Randall, come on.
Starting point is 00:44:05 Yeah. Don't be so hard on yourself. I know, I know, it's funny. This will go down as another last game playoff. I was surprised when I saw Yukon on your board.
