And today we're joined by Janice Brody, Randall, Seth, Corey, Maggie, and Jordan. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meadeer's four verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. And there is a prize. Meadir will donate $500 to the Conservation Organization of the winner's choosing. Jordan, welcome to the show.
Starting point is 00:01:58 It's been a minute since you've been here. It has. Yeah, thank you. What do you do in town this week? There's always a reason when you're here. There is. Well, so I've been working on a new podcast series called Blood Trails. We published the first episode, kind of a pilot episode back in March, and people seem to like it.
Starting point is 00:02:15 So we're going to do a full season. First episodes coming out October 30th. If you didn't get a chance to watch or to listen to the first episode, this is Meat Eaters' first foray into true crime. So these are true crime stories about hunters, anglers, campers, hikers, public land users, people getting into pretty serious trouble in the outdoors. Example one of the first episode you did. It was a turkey hunter who was killed, right? That's right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:02:43 Give me an example of an upcoming episode that you have this season. So the first episode, I believe at this point, is about a deer hunter in Wisconsin. and this this his name was uh robert christian he went by bob and uh he was going out for the first day of uh bow hunting season so this and this was all the way back in 1977 so he was kind of an early adopter as far as bow hunting goes um he was supposed to meet his friend they they were going to spend the night at the friend's house on friday night and then go out uh to hunt the opener on saturday but bob never showed up to his friend's house He disappeared on the way between Madison, Wisconsin, and Baraboo, Wisconsin.
Starting point is 00:03:29 They found his car, but no Bob. And so that episode is just about the investigation into that disappearance. And to this day, no one knows what happened. All right. Who'd you talk to? Who'd you talk to for that episode? Talk to Bob's sister. I talked to the friend that he was supposed to hunt with.
Starting point is 00:03:49 I talked to the detective, who's kind of. leading the investigation at this point. And there's some, I mean, there's a lot of crazy details. The story involves a nun. It involves, it involves John Wayne Gacy, potentially, who, if you don't know, is Killer Clown. Very famous serial killer out of Chicago. He was in the area around the time that Bob disappeared, so that is one theory.
Starting point is 00:04:21 And so, you know, there's, There's enough, I would say, to have some interesting theories about what happened, but no one quite knows for sure. Pilot episode was very entertaining. A lot going on on that show. Again, is it October 31st? October 30th, first episode. The plan is to release an episode a week after that. Okay.
Starting point is 00:04:42 And it's on its own feed. It's on its own feed. Yeah, it's on its own feed. So please, once it comes out, you know, go listen to that first episode. If you like it, please subscribe that way. or follow, I guess, on Spotify or, you know, whatever platform you use. That way it'll tell you when the next episode comes out. Looking forward to it.
Starting point is 00:05:01 Maggie Hodlow, another out of town. What are you doing here this week? Oh, you know, I'm just poking around the office, hanging out while some college kids cook us some food at roast. Okay. Oh, boy. Very excited for that episode. Brody and I and Yanni, we were treated to some interesting college kid cuisine. And I heard it was your idea to get the meat thermometer out for the bear meat.
Starting point is 00:05:27 Yeah, yeah. Well, Brody spotted the, uh, the bloody burgers. And I was like, let's get a thermometer. No, I don't want to say it away. Yonis told me and I, I had a very audible laugh. Yeah. The first temperature reading. Yeah, it was, it was two digits.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Right before they're about to be served. Now, I, I, I, turn in for that. This is, these are college kids. And I suggested last week that we just overserve them a little bit. and give them a fridge full leftovers. Well, the one's not even old enough to drink. But Janice said that was the worst idea I've ever had. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:06:02 It wouldn't have helped. You said it was the worst idea I've ever had. Maybe you always have good ideas, and that was just the worst of the good ideas. That's what he made. I didn't read it that way. Yeah. Okay. If you'd have been there, you would rescinded that idea.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Randall, we can't as a company get 18-year-olds drunk. Oh, that's right. Yeah. No, that's a good call. I didn't even think of that. What's the smoking age in Montana, though? You could, uh, oh, that's a good. Maybe.
Starting point is 00:06:31 Okay, now we're back on track. Yep, yep. We should have had a collaboration. Isn't that also 21? I think it's 21. Oh, all right. Oh, well. Back to the drying.
Starting point is 00:06:40 Okay. Well, Maggie, a bunch of people with the munchies cooking. I hadn't even thought of that, but yeah, that was a bad idea then. Maggie and Brody are hosting that upcoming episode. No, they're judging. that upcoming episode or some college kids cook bear meat
Starting point is 00:06:55 It's a fun one Very excited All right Here's our infrequently asked Question segment If you have a trivia Related question for our crew Send it to trivia at the media
Starting point is 00:07:04 dot com with the subject line IFAQ Ben Lambie says How are listeners notified That their question is being used They're not Ben I'm sorry You are notified
Starting point is 00:07:14 When you hear your name On the show Or sometimes you get an email From our guy Roman Who will Contact you if you will When our listener question of the week and get your address so we can send you that board game um i i am usually
Starting point is 00:07:29 a good month behind in the media inbox and then sometimes i like your question but i squirrel it away for a future episode because if the answer is like uh kentucky and i just had the answer kentucky last week then i don't want to use it in a back-to-back episodes uh so to answer your question ben you just hear your name on the show can i chime in because i'm hosting soon if you want to skip that whole process send me some questions on my Instagram. Oh, okay. There you go.
Starting point is 00:07:55 And then I'll let you know. You won't have to wait. And if you'd rather have me ask those questions, send it to my Instagram instead. And for every other question you want to send, just email trivia at the meat eater.com. For housekeeping today, we want to give you one more reminder that tickets are now on sale for the Meadeer Live Christmas tour. Steve Yannis, Clay, Randall, and Brent are headed south in December with stops in Birmingham, Nashville, Memphis, Fayetteville, Dallas, and Austin.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Tickets are going fast, so fast. In fact, that Fayetteville is already sold out, head over to the medeater.com slash events for more info on the tour and how to get your tickets. Spencer, can you just send me that copy so I can repeat it tomorrow for radio live. We can do that. You're going to hear a lot about the live tour. Again, Fayetteville, they must have a lot of randomals down there that they're already sold out.
Starting point is 00:08:46 I can't think of why else. I think they have some. Yeah, you're probably right. Randomals. Some Kleeneacs. Oh, I like that. That's good. Did you just come up with that?
Starting point is 00:08:56 Yeah. The wheels were churning. What about for people who like Brent. Brent. What do you got for that? Brentomaniac? Brentimals. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:09:05 We're going to have to. You noodle on that. Yep, yep. All right. The Shelby Index for today is a four. So our winner should get eight correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil.
Starting point is 00:09:19 Look. need to know what I stand to win everything. How's that? Just tend to win everything. Game on, suckers. Question one, the topic is hunting, and as always, this will be multiple choice.
Starting point is 00:09:40 Audubon, Ducks Unlimited, and the Cornell Lab have all published articles on how to distinguish between a redhead and a blank. Is it canvas back Cinnamon teal Ringneck or golden eye Audubon, Ducks Unlimited
Starting point is 00:10:00 and the Cornell Lab have all published articles on how to distinguish between a redhead and a blank Your four choices canvas back Cinnamon teal ring neck
Starting point is 00:10:13 golden eye Yanni, our first answer in the room. Do you have this one right, Yanni? I believe so. Okay. I think I know why you would know this. We could talk about it after the flavor text. Audubon, Ducks Unlimited, and the Cornell Lab have all published articles on how to distinguish between a redhead and a blank.
Starting point is 00:10:38 Yonest, did you ever get into shooting those golden eyes on the river back when we lived in Colorado? No. No. And Steve kind of got really into it when we first moved here to Bozeman, but not my thing to shoot ducks. I don't like to eat. Speaking of ringnecks, different kind of ringneck. But we've had a rooster in our yard. Is that new on the Putelles property?
Starting point is 00:11:01 Yeah. A wild cock in your yard, huh? I believe so. I mean, he looks vibrant, healthy, all his tail feathers. He's coming to get a little scratch around the chicken coop. A little over a week till pheasant season opens. Is he safe?
Starting point is 00:11:16 Oh, it is? I thought October 1st was the opener. No. Oh, you didn't break the lawn. No. Bell's telling my daughter's that. He's panning it. When he left Tom today,
Starting point is 00:11:26 you said, remember today's the opener. Okay. He's waiting to get a good pattern on this trail can. It's like a full-on mountain pheasant. Yeah. To live off there. Right?
Starting point is 00:11:38 That thing ain't anywhere near some CRP. Not even kind of. Again, to distinguish between a redhead and a blank, Canvasback, Cinnamon Teal, Ringneck, GoldenEye, is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Janice, Canvas Back, Jordan, Canvas Back, Randall, Cinnamon Teal, Maggie, Canvas Back, Seth, Corey, and Brody. All say Canvas Back. They got it.
Starting point is 00:12:02 The correct answer is a Canvas Back. In the 1970s, Canvas Backs outnumbered Redheads by 2 to 1, but today. day, there are more redheads than canvas backs. Managing these fluctuating populations is why it's crucial for hunters to be able to tell the difference. Some identifying features are that canvas backs are bigger with a longer forehead and red eye, while redheads are smaller with a shorter forehead and a yellow eye, usually a redhead has a more gray body while a canvas back has a more white body. Here is a picture of the two. Hey, Spencer, I definitely did not prep this. Oh, that's okay.
Starting point is 00:12:41 I don't have a picture of the two. I'm going to add it in post. How about that? Did you know that almost all the redheads in North America, winter in Laguna Madre? I did not know that. Okay. It's a lot of redheads to put there. Canvas back was my number two guests, but I couldn't picture what any of them looked like.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Now, I believe there is a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service poster in our kitchen where the judges sit that says, here's how to identify between a canvas back and a redhead. There is. Nice little bone for Yanni on that. What's a nickname for Kings? Is it King? Canvas. Oh, here is our picture now. Do you know the difference?
Starting point is 00:13:19 Brody, I'm going to ask you first. Which one is which? I think that's a redhead on the left and canvas back on the right. Final answer? You got it. Again, a redhead on the left, a canvas back on the right. I never shot either of them. In flight, they look pretty dang similar.
Starting point is 00:13:35 All right, question two. The topic is fishing. This outdoor apparel brand, introduced their performance fishing gear, or PFG for short, in 1996. Oh, I need a new mark. Randall, can you serve Brody? I think this one's lucky. I'm going to stick with it.
Starting point is 00:13:57 Okay, you're going to throw it, though, in the garbage after this episode. Wow, that was impressive. I thought I'd get more compliments than just Spencer's, based on how good that role was. Still none, they still refused to give in. Everybody's still. considering how that stacks up against other marker throws they've seen. I get it.
Starting point is 00:14:16 This outdoor apparel brand introduced their performance fishing gear or PFG for short. Corey, you know if you started pumping iron that antlers and your tattoo would get bigger. Oh, there you go. No, I didn't know that. He's past his prime. You think about it.
Starting point is 00:14:33 Sounds like a waste of time. Turn it from a 320 and to a 360. Yeah, Booner. This outdoor apparel brand introduced their performance fishing gear or PFG for short in 1996. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Janice says Columbia,
Starting point is 00:14:50 Jordas. Jordan says Orvis. Jordi, yeah, you'd make that. Randall, Maggie, Seth, Corey, and Brody say Columbia. They got it. The correct answer is, Jordan, Jordan. Columbia.
Starting point is 00:15:02 Columbia made their first fishing vest in 1961. It was created by founder Gert Boyle, who said her husband requested a multi-pocketed fishing shirt. Today, Columbia designs their PFG line of clothes to go, quote, from the boat to the bar. Question three, the topic is natural history.
Starting point is 00:15:21 This next great question is via Colton Taylor. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has a ceremonial start in blank. Oh! And official start, the next day in Willow. I would have preferred that you ask where the
Starting point is 00:15:36 official start was. Nobody would have got that one right. I would have. to retire this marker. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has a ceremonial start in blank and official start the next day in Willow. When your marker's having issues, most of the time, it's not a marker issue. It's because the board is not clean. Well, how do I clean my board?
Starting point is 00:15:59 With the crappy eraser. Yeah. Yeah, you want to get a little spray ball that has actual dry erase. Did you look this up, Phil? Or have you been hiding this information for years? I've been hiding it for years. I haven't mentioned it. It's news to me.
Starting point is 00:16:13 The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race has a ceremonial start in blank. I'm not fine. An official start the next day in Willow. How's the new marker working, Brody? Is it a marker problem or a whiteboard problem? I haven't decided. Okay. Need another marker toss?
Starting point is 00:16:28 I'll try the black one next. Yannis, do you have an answer yet? Not yet. Okay. Is everybody waiting on me? The rest of the whiteboards are down. Wait a minute. Okay.
Starting point is 00:16:40 Oh, no. No, okay. Brody had second thoughts, and then he had third thoughts. I'm waffling on start and finish. Decided his first thought was better. Yanni, you ready? Yeah, let's do it. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Starting point is 00:16:56 We have Viannis and Jordan and Randall saying Anchorage. Maggie says, Juno, Seth, Fairbanks, Corey, Gnome, Brody, Nome. Back in the game. The correct answer. answer is Anchorage. Yeah, but I mean. This side of the room got it right.
Starting point is 00:17:15 To this side of the room did not. The trail ends in Nome, Alaska, which is 938 miles long. Along the race, although the race has only been going on since 1973, it follows trails that humans have been using for thousands of years. The record time was set in 2021 when Dallas Ceevi finished the race in seven days, 14 hours, 8 minutes, and 57 seconds. Question four, the topic is cooking. Regional names for this dish include taverns, wimpies, spoonburgers, steamers, and barbecue.
Starting point is 00:17:53 Oh, barbecue. Randall, the only player with an answer. Regional names for this dish include taverns, wimpies, spoonburgers, steamers, and barbecue. I think you should tell us how. detailed the answer has to be. I give one of your examples of like if it's the answer is... I am not going to do that for this one. There's just
Starting point is 00:18:20 an acceptable answer and that everything else would not be accepted. Regional names for this dish include taverns, wimpies, spoonburgers, steamers, and barbecue. This is question four.
Starting point is 00:18:37 Randall, do you know this, know this? I have a pretty good idea okay you didn't ask me how i know willow is the tell tell me how you know willow randall i'd love to know uh well because where we used to take our boats uh in when i was working in alaska it was like the start of the iditarod trail and it froze over so willow's very near deshka landing where we put our boats in how big of a town is willow oh i don't know it's it's quite small but uh when i went up there one year in March the Iditarod had just gone through
Starting point is 00:19:11 so to get to the lodge I just followed the Iditarod trail on the snowmobile there you get you used to find dog booties they have like all these little felt dog booties and you find him in the river Are you familiar with a bar in Willow Did you introduce yourself there? God there's a place that I
Starting point is 00:19:26 thinking of but I don't know if it's actually in Willow again question for the topic is cooking regional names for this dish include taverns Wimpies spoon burgers, steamers, and barbecue.
Starting point is 00:19:41 Is everybody ready? Jordan? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Janice saying clams. Jordan says sliders. Randall Sliders. Maggie, hot dog. Seth.
Starting point is 00:19:55 Sloppy Joe. Corey. Hot dog. Brody. Sliders. The correct answer is sloppy Joe. Oh. Seth.
Starting point is 00:20:04 Got that one right? Spoonburger. That's great. Other names include Manwich, Yum Yum, Mood, Maid Rights, and Slush Burgers. Heinz ketchup claims that the meal was created by a Sioux City, Iowa man that was named Joe, who liked adding tomato sauce to his loose meat sandwiches. Danielle Pruitt has a delicious venison sloppy Joe recipe on the meat eater.com. It's the only sloppy Joe recipe I will use. It is good, and I use it all the time.
Starting point is 00:20:33 Very good. It's not too wet. I feel like some sloppy Joe's are really. Sloppy Where do they call them barbecue I had heard that That was one that was familiar to me I think in like northeastern South Dakota
Starting point is 00:20:47 They call them barbecues Now where I grew up in southeastern South Dakota Tavern what about you guys Where are you come? If you would have said Manwich I would have got it Yeah It would have been too easy Seemers have you think of White Castle
Starting point is 00:20:58 Oh in Pennsylvania I was thinking the White Castle I've only ever heard sloppy Joe's Yeah I can remember How about up in Canada land this other stuff that you came up with. Probably Sloppy Joe. The old sloppy Jose.
Starting point is 00:21:12 There you go. Put some jalapinos in there. Deer meat sauce and taco sauce. That would include me in, actually, if it included that regional variation. Question five. The topic is hunting. This seven-letter word is defined as, quote, the spiral grooves inside the barrel of a gun that caused the bullet to spin.
Starting point is 00:21:36 the seven-letter word is defined as the spiral of bone there Jordan the spiral of gun writer inside the barrel of gun definitely Jordan's bone that caused the bullet to spin for the life of me my brain's not working oh you'll get it just we'll talk for a while I want you to get it
Starting point is 00:21:56 I know what you're thinking of I bet I know what you're thinking of I know I'm thinking of a very similar word that's not the right one Jordan and Randall and Seth and Brody they all seem to know it. I've read this word so many times. You have. You have. Corey, Maggie, and Janice.
Starting point is 00:22:15 They're struggling, though. This seven-letter word is defined as the spiral grooves inside the barrel of a gun that caused the bullet to spin. You laughing at my answer? Yeah. I'm not done yet. You better not be. No, I know that's not.
Starting point is 00:22:35 Seth laugh first. He made me laugh. Oh, you're really laughing at this? I know that's not the answer. But it is seven letters. He's just testing, you guys. Twisted steel and sex. Randall's having second thoughts, he declared.
Starting point is 00:22:51 Come out with us up, me honest. We gave you some time. Oh, yeah. All right. I got the writing. Corey? No, gave up. Maggie?
Starting point is 00:22:58 I'm out anyway. It's not right, but I got. Go ahead. and reveal your answers. Janis and Jordan and Randall say rifling. Maggie says fluting. Seth, rifling. Corey, without an answer, Brody, rifling.
Starting point is 00:23:13 The correct answer is rifling. My brain was farting big time on that one. It just wasn't happening. Rifling is found in most rifles, pistols, and muzzleloaders, and some shotguns. These subtle grooves make the bullet spin, which increases range and accuracy. The University of Alaska says the best way to visualize this is a thrown football, which will travel further and be more accurate when released with a tight spiral. All right, we're halfway through the game of trivia, Phil.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Give us a scoreboard update. At halftime, we've got Maggie and Corey with two points. Jesus, Seth. Jordan, Randall and Brody are all tied up with three. And then in first place, tied up with four points are Janus Patelis and Seth Morris. Let's go, Seth. Seth has a victory this song. right yeah okay and uh and i lost to brodie one time and overtime do you have a legit victory
Starting point is 00:24:07 or it was a jabroney episode of it i think he might have whooped your butt that game really i don't know i'm just asking it matters hunting big country isn't for the faint of heart you got steep ground long distances and miles of crown land that aren't always easy to navigate That's why Anex Hunt just got a serious upgrade for hunters in Canada. Starting point is 00:27:06 According to 2022 data, this insect is the most popular animal tattoo in America. According to 2022 data, this insect is the most popular animal tattoo in America. Brody, very quick to answer. It's a mosquito. Cicada.
Starting point is 00:27:34 Tick. Cockroach. According to 2022 data, this insect is the most popular animal tattoo in America. I have the top 15 list in front of me, so be thinking about what other animals may be popular
Starting point is 00:27:49 tattoos in the country. Do you, are you have one of these? I have one of these. Not going to give you Any hints? You don't have it? The honest is studying my arm, hoping for a clue. Insect tattoo. According to 2022 data.
Starting point is 00:28:03 I feel like you wore a short-sleeved shirt for a reason, man. This insect is the most popular animal tattoo in America. Antler bug. I think I could guess the top ten pretty good. In Pennsylvania, those lantern flies. Oh, they're everywhere. Stepping on them, smacking them, killing them. Are those natives?
Starting point is 00:28:25 No, that's the one you're supposed to see if you kill. Kill if you see. And see if you kill both. You guys had your hands full, sounds like. All over the place, man. They skipped the game just to go squish them. According to 2020 data, this insect is the most popular animal tattoo in America. Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:28:47 Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Janus saying, Black Widow, Jordan, Butter. Randall Butterfly, Maggie Moth, Seth, and Corey and Brody say Butterfly, the correct answer. Is Butterfly... You're honest, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't point out that Black Widow is in Iraq. I know, I know, but I thought that maybe it would slip in. Somehow, and Spencer wouldn't let that. This data was gathered by 24-7 Wall Street.
Starting point is 00:29:18 According to them, Butterflies are the most popular animal tattoo in America that's followed by let's take some guesses. What else do you think? Dragonfly. Dragon fly. Not exclusive to insects. Ducks. A rose. No. Animal. Excuse me. Not exclusive to insects. Any animal. Let's try this again. Cross or crucifix.
Starting point is 00:29:37 A wolf. A wolf. There you go. That is number four. Oh. A tiger. A tiger. That's on the list. That's right. Tiger, I believe, is number 10. A big white tail buck with an American flag. on the list. No white-tailed deer. No. No. No lions. Lions. Lions. It's just ahead of wolves at number three. So we're still missing number two.
Starting point is 00:30:03 Um, leopard. No leopard. Dog. Dog is on there. A dog comes in at 13. Anything else. It's got to be like an animal. Cat is on the list. Bear is on the list. Shark. Shark is on the list. Oh. The other one's on the list. We have
Starting point is 00:30:22 snakes, lions, wolves, elephants, hummingbirds, owls, tigers, cats, bees, eagles, spiders, dogs, bears, and sharks. What was two? Snakes. Snakes was two. Snakes. I do not have a butterfly tattoo. My wife does, and when I asked her this
Starting point is 00:30:41 question, she said butterfly immediately because she's thinking about getting a second. I think, my wife has one too, Spencer. Oh, there you go. There's pretty strong overlap between that list and the list of, like, the most generic 15 animals you'd find in a kid's coloring book. I think you're right about that. Yeah, there's something there. As far as animals I have, I've got a dog here, some mallards, a dinosaur, a cryptid, a white-tailed deer, a paddlefish. I've got a hams bear, a sucker, a squirrel, and a coyote track. There you go.
Starting point is 00:31:13 I wonder if you could get the data on the placement on the body. Lower back. And I think there'd be very clear. Yeah, where can you tell us where Shelby's butter? Her butterfly is? Her butterfly is on her arm. Only tell us if it's not on her lower back. Okay, good. I also think there'd be a very clear, like, men, women.
Starting point is 00:31:30 Yes. Yeah. I imagine with all of these, it would be that way. Snakes, I could see being fairly split. Lions, that seems more masculine, wolves, more masculine. Elephants probably split. I'm sure. Here's question seven.
Starting point is 00:31:42 The topic is cooking. Yeah, elephants for sure split. I'm open to an argument. What do you think? Is that more masculine or feminine? I don't know. I don't know. It's just sort of an animal that I haven't really thought about gendering. This whole back's an elephant.
Starting point is 00:32:00 Question seven. Cooking. George Clooney declines a skewered rodent and says, quote, a third of a gopher would only rouse my appetite without bedding her back down in this 2000 film. Oh, such a good movie. There's a little hint. Brody loves this movie. George Clooney declines a skewered rodent and says
Starting point is 00:32:25 a third of a gopher would only rouse my appetite without bedding her back down in this 2000 film. Good. Brody likes this movie. Randall already has his answer. Not my strong suit here. Yeah, me neither. Cooking movies?
Starting point is 00:32:45 Which one? George Clooney? Movies. The year's throwing me off. George Clooney. He declines a skewered rodent and says a third of a gopher would only rouse my appetite
Starting point is 00:32:55 without bedding her back down in this 2000 film. Phil, what year was Batman forever? It's 97, I think. I'm starting to question it. I don't know if I can name it George Clever. But I'm not going to question it. This is like the one that I can name.
Starting point is 00:33:11 You had this one right, Meg. The peacemaker? Who are you, people? This is like... Phil will give us a review after this since he seemed to have a strong take. over there. Oh, no. No, it is. My reaction was to people saying they couldn't name a George Clooney movie. No, I can name this one. This is one I really like. I know ER. So I put this one down. I already named one Batman forever. I'll give you a hint. It's not Oceans 11. Oh, okay. I mean, Jordan is actually erasing. It's the only one I know. I think that was Ocean's 11 is 2001. That's pretty close. It was Ocean's 12, actually. Totally off. George Clooney declines a skewered road.
Starting point is 00:33:54 Well, no, it's the fact that people have space in their brain to know that a movie George Clooney came out in 2001. It's amazing. And he says a third of a gopher would only rouse my appetite without bedding her back down. Is everybody ready? I'm not going to try. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Yonis, without an answer, Jordan says,
Starting point is 00:34:14 Ocean's 11. Randall, oh, brother, where art thou? Maggie, oh, brother, where art thou? Seth, without an answer. answer, Corey and Brody say, Oh, brother, where art thou? They got it. The correct answer is,
Starting point is 00:34:26 Oh, brother, where art thou? The Cohen Brothers film follows three escaped convicts who search for treasure in rural Mississippi in 1937. In that scene, Delmar is cooking a gopher over a campfire and says they got it after coming across a whole village of them. Later in the film, Clooney tells a hitchhiker to keep his fingers away from Pete's mouth because all he's had to eat in the last 13 years is prison food, gopher, and a little greasy horse.
Starting point is 00:34:55 Phil, oh, brother, where art thou? Not my favorite Cohen brothers. It's a little kind of like outside their normal thing, but it's a lot of fun. The soundtrack is so good. Oh, yeah, it's good. And Lucid's based on the Odyssey. Yes.
Starting point is 00:35:11 Just like Eastbound and Down. That is as well. Conceptually, yeah, Eastbound and Down. is the play on the Odyssey. I mean, you could say anything. This show is loosely based on the New Testament. No, it's a man finding his way back, and he keeps getting deterred along the way.
Starting point is 00:35:28 Question eight. So his season was going to be another sort of loop in that journey. The topic is fishing. This next great question is via Brendan Compton. The main department of marine resources says this type of hook, quote, will set itself, usually in the corner of the mouth and reduces gut-hooked fish.
Starting point is 00:35:50 You guys act like you've never read an interview with Jody Hill, the creator of Eastbound and Down. I don't know who that is. Shit. The main department of marine resources says this type of hook will set itself, usually in the corner of the mouth, and reduces gut-hooked fish. Laugh or not.
Starting point is 00:36:13 Seth is watching Corey write his hand. Come on, Corey. Try not to have a tell as to whether or not it's right. You're in anglers to tie flies a lot. Oh, okay. No, I'm just kidding. I can't tell if that was an actual hint or not. I kind of like that set.
Starting point is 00:36:32 No, it wasn't. The main department of many resources. At least it should be taken that way. Says this type of hook, quote, will set itself usually in the corner of the mouth and reduces gut hooked fish. keep trying cori maybe just stop
Starting point is 00:36:50 all your head I thought you had a little more depth just hey fishing guides don't have time to tie them yeah if a rainbow trout don't eat it that's not a good excuse is everybody ready it's getting hot
Starting point is 00:37:06 Jordan how do you like your answer I don't know I think it's one of the only hooks I can think of go ahead and reveal your answers we have Janice and Jordan and Randall and Maggie and Seth and Corey and Brody saying Circle Hook, they got it. The correct answer is Circle Hook. What else did he have over there, Seth?
Starting point is 00:37:26 Mustag. Octopus, Mustang. Aberdeen. A Circle Hook has a point that's aimed at the shaft of the hook as opposed to a J hook, which has a point that's aimed parallel to the shaft. This design usually prevents a fish from swallowing the hook. Studies in Massachusetts and Maryland show that Circle Hook, significantly reduce catch and release mortality for striped bass.
Starting point is 00:37:50 I had Jayhook first. I'm glad I changed it. Good thing you did. All right, Phil, let's get a scoreboard update with two questions left. Let's see. I think everyone is still in the game. It's a close game. Maggie has four points.
Starting point is 00:38:05 Janus, Jordan, and Corey are tied up with five, and Randall, Brody, and Seth are tied up with six. Wow. Question nine. The topic is gear. This next great question is. is via Ben Yuer. White Flyer, which is the largest manufacturer of these,
Starting point is 00:38:23 labels each box, quote, fragile as eggs. Randall and Brody already have their answer. White Flyer, which is the largest manufacturer of these, labels each box, fragile as eggs. What's the category? This is gear. Not the hint you were hoping for. I used to do some work for the family that owns White Flyer.
Starting point is 00:38:47 Oh, really? Kind of work. Yeah. Enforcement. Enforcement. Mostly security. White Flyer, which is the largest manufacturer of these, labels each box fragile as eggs.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Yanni, Jordan? No? I'm not good. Don't go to them. Don't go to them. With the brand name questions? I just, I struggle. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:39:13 I've heard of White Flyer. Seth used to do some work for them If you didn't know Landscaping Does that help you? No White Flyer Which is the largest manufacturer of these
Starting point is 00:39:27 Labels each box Fragile as eggs You gotta let the fives just settle into the chaff I don't know what any of the scores Because I'm out Jordan Has been inspired Brody's devastating
Starting point is 00:39:43 I was thinking of wrong category thing. Again, the topic is gear. Yanni? I'm writing something. Okay. And when he's done, we will flip over the line. He's still writing.
Starting point is 00:39:56 Right? Not a lot of there. It's a great answer, Corey. Long answer. His marker is not touching the whiteboard. Whiteflyer, which is the largest manufacturer of these labels to each box,
Starting point is 00:40:09 fragile as eggs. Corey got a hearty laugh from Brody. You raised it? And now he's done some erasing. Oh, it's a good one. I'm getting hits that I'm wrong. I was missing having Max next to me for entertainment, but
Starting point is 00:40:25 Corey's got to sit down there. That's my unlucky chair. Janis. Yeah, whatever. You give up. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Whatever. Yanni says plastic bobbers.
Starting point is 00:40:36 Jordan. Oh, I do know white flyers. And Randall and Maggie and Seth say clay pigeons. Corey, without an answer, Brody, Clay Pigeons. The correct answer is Clay Pigeons. I'm sorry for laughing at you, Corey, but light bulbs was fantastic. That's the second best option. That's pretty good.
Starting point is 00:40:56 Clay Pigeon shooting replaced glass ball shooting, and glass ball shooting replaced live pigeon shooting. Part of this skeet shooting revolution was thanks to Britain outlong the ownership of live pigeons. They feared that spies would use the birds to carry messages to rival armies, as one British commander said in 1914, quote, an alien enemy with a racing pigeon is far more dangerous than one with a live bomb. All right, Phil, let's get one more scoreboard update before question 10. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:41:28 This Randall Brody and Seth going into the last question with seven points, but right behind them is Jordan Sillers is six. Here's a correct answer review so far. One was canvas back, two, Columbia, three, Anchorage, four, sloppy joe five rifling six butterfly seven oh brother where art thou set er eight circle hook nine clay pigeons here is question ten the topic is conservation how many golf coast states have a national park how many golf coast states have a national park we have four play years left in the game. Brody, Seth, and Randall have seven points. Jordan is right behind them with six.
Starting point is 00:42:22 That's a good question, Spencer. Thank you, Phil. The number questions are hard. How many golf coast states have a national park? This is a bone for the guy who's from a golf coast state? I don't know. He's a Canadian. Probably not.
Starting point is 00:42:41 Yeah, probably not. I just don't remember what they all are. How many Gulf Coast states have a national park? Randall, do you have this one right? I think so. Okay. It's a good question. It's fun.
Starting point is 00:42:57 Thank you. I just guess. It's pure guess. Which is a bummer. Brody's still thinking. It's not 20. Brody. Are we waiting on me?
Starting point is 00:43:12 not waiting on you. Just one day. Yeah. How are you doing? Just checking in. I don't know. We'll find out. Okay.
Starting point is 00:43:20 Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Janice saying two. Jordan says five. Randall, two. Maggie, three. Seth, three. Corey, two.
Starting point is 00:43:36 Brody, two. The correct answer is two. is two Brody and Randall got that one right meaning they are going to overtime you don't even mention the other people that got it right
Starting point is 00:43:50 as well Corey got it right well done you two not going to be good enough to participate in overtime well everybody participates you just can't win
Starting point is 00:44:00 those two states that might be the highest like scoring total scoring game ever everybody did well those two states are Texas and Florida Texas is home to Big Bend and Guadalupe Mountains in Florida
Starting point is 00:44:14 is home to Everglades, Biscayne, and Dry Tortugas. Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama do not have a national park. So, have you been to a national park in Louisiana? No. It was a poor guess. He's from Canada, Yacht. He'd quit rubbing it in. All right, Phil.
Starting point is 00:44:33 Play the drop. Dude, when I hear that, I feel like if you lose, like they're going to chop your arm off or something. Or pull your eyeball out. Yeah, we're saving that for 2026. All right, for the overtime question, it will be a numerical question. Whoever is closest between Randall and Brody will be declared the winner. But everyone in the room will play along because if somebody gets it right on the nose, then we will add an extra $100 to today's donation.
Starting point is 00:45:05 The tie-breaking topic is conservation. What number president was 10? Teddy Roosevelt. Oh, no. This is just like you wrote the question for Randall. Promise I did not. I don't know that that's true. Randall's been chirping in his zero.
Starting point is 00:45:22 I haven't won in a long time. I mean, come on. You know Randall's going to be in a tiebreaker. He almost wasn't. What number president was Teddy Roosevelt? Corey's declared a pretty good guess. Trump. Biden Trump
Starting point is 00:45:41 That's all I got A couple bushes What number president? A couple two tree bushes Obama It's an Obama. It was Teddy. Bush,
Starting point is 00:45:51 Bush light Yeah. Yanni, do you like your answer? No. Do you think you're within 10? I'm going to bump it up. Maybe. No, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:46:03 I was going to bump it down. No. Are you listing all the president's randall? Just backwards. I don't need Corey and Seth are consulting each other about if their numbers should be higher or lower What do you boys thinking over there?
Starting point is 00:46:21 Oh, you guys are right around where I'm at Okay, all right. I'm checked out, Spencer. I'm checked out, buddy. The only test I ever cheated on... I don't think it's right, though. I don't think it's right. The only test they ever cheated on in high school
Starting point is 00:46:33 was we had to list all the presidents in order how many terms they served and what their presidential party was. And I was, I'm not putting in the work to do this. Okay. So would you get this one right or no? No. And how did you cheat?
Starting point is 00:46:46 I texted by myself the answer, you know, and I was, I was sneaking my cell phone, taking little, little peaksies. What number president was Teddy Roosevelt? Randall's still making his list. Apologies to Mr. Asher. You know, Bozeman High, we just heard, is going cell phone free in 26. Oh, meaning what? They like lock them in a bag?
Starting point is 00:47:08 I don't know if we have the exact details, but, yeah. I'm all for it. Me too. How do you enforce it? What do you? I mean, I think if a phone is, I would hope that if a phone is seen, that it's confiscated. Brody, how do you like your answer? I mean, I feel like I'm in the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:47:30 It's simple math to do, like, the ballpark stuff. Randall, still making your list? Yeah, but. What president are you on? Can you tell us? No, the thing is, the thing is, I, the last time I did this, it forgot someone. I got someone mixed up. And so right off the bat, I'm falling apart.
Starting point is 00:47:51 Maybe overthinking. I feel pretty good, though. I'm fine. Is everybody ready? One or two. Whoa. Everybody ready. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Starting point is 00:48:00 We have Yonis saying 37, Jordan, 36, Maggie, 23, Seth, 24. Corey 27 are two players left we have Brody sang 23 Randall saying 29 the correct answer is 26 meaning we're going to a second
Starting point is 00:48:23 overtime because Randall and Brody were both three off and Randall was over I should win and the closest was Corey who had 27 Roosevelt served as the 26th president from 1901 to 1909 he took office after the assassination of who do you know grover mckinley mckinley that's right who roosevelt was the
Starting point is 00:48:49 vp for teddy was 42 years old when sworn in making him the youngest president ever in almost half the age of our last two presidents oh i wish we could bring him back to life multiple turns are they also like 20 no no no that's how trump got 45 and 47. All right, Phil, do you have the second question loaded? I am loading it right now. Okay, this is only the second time ever that we have gone to a double overtime. Got another history question keyed up for Randall? The second overtime topic is cooking. According to Indeed, what is the average hourly pay for a butcher in 2025? According to Indeed, what is the average hourly? pay for a butcher in 2025. We'll have you
Starting point is 00:49:42 go to dollar and cents here just so we don't have to go to a third overtime today. This is tough. I've never thought about this. I'm just going to guess a wage. According to indeed, what is the average
Starting point is 00:49:58 hourly pay. Again, hourly pay is what we're looking for. Not salaried butchers. For a butcher in 2025. Has anyone worked as a butcher in here? Nope. No.
Starting point is 00:50:15 It's amateurs, a bunch of amateur butchers. This is tough. Still down to just Randall and Corey. I can't live with Bozeman for that. According to Indeed, what is the average hourly pay for a butcher in 2025? Randall, we are waiting on you. Are you ready? You were a very warm.
Starting point is 00:50:38 I know, I know. It was fine for a little bit. He didn't anticipate overtime. As soon as we got into overtime. Or double overtime. Yeah, I was ready to get out and vent at question 10. It's everybody ready. It's hot over there.
Starting point is 00:50:53 It's a big machine. It runs hot. We have Janice saying $22.50. Jordan, $23.70. Maggie, $22 an hour. set 1850 Cori $20 an hour and our two players left
Starting point is 00:51:13 we have Randall saying $15.75 and Brody saying $25. The correct answer is $19. $8 making Randall our winner he edged out Brody by about
Starting point is 00:51:31 $1. I'm glad we're not going to a third overtime because I think by then I will truly have expired. Yeah, his hyperthermia. TARPS would be off if that happened. This is looking at 895 salaries from job posting since 2023. Indeed says that on the low end, butchers make $14 an hour,
Starting point is 00:51:50 and on the high end, $26 an hour. The highest paying cities for butchers are San Francisco, New York City, Nashville, and Dallas. What was the average? $19. and $8. Randall, what are we doing with the $500 today? It was well-earned.
Starting point is 00:52:07 Took 12 questions to get there. Yeah, let's send this one to Captains for Clean Water. Okay, what do we like about them? It's a great group that works on all kinds of marine fisheries stuff. I think they do a lot with the Everglades, and it involves charter boat captains, guides. So there are folks who are on the water every day and know the issues facing our fisheries better than most. $500 going to captains for clean waters. George, Maggie, thanks for joining us.
Starting point is 00:52:36 Thanks for coming to town. It's here. Thanks, Spencer. Join us next week for more meat eater trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. Yeah, Spencer from South Dakota, he's the host. Using those smooth, mellow tones, he lays them questions down.
