Starting point is 00:01:07 This season on Blood Trails, each story begins with a hunter stepping into the wild, but not all of them come back. I'm Jordan Sillers, a journalist with over a decade of experience investigating stories about hunting, fishing, guns, and crime.
Starting point is 00:01:22 Join me as we track the truth through tangled cover and cold case files, where every trail tells a story and every story leaves its own trail of blood. Blood Trails. Listen now on Spotify. Smell us now, lady. Welcome to Meat-eater trivia.
Starting point is 00:01:44 Meat-eater podcast. Welcome to MeatEater Radio Live. It's 11 a.m. Mountain Time. That's 7 a.m. for our new friends in Tahiti on Thursday, October 30th, and we are live from Meat Eater HQ in Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Randall Williams, joined today by my very close friends and colleagues, Seth Morris, and Corey Calkins. Happy to be here. Great to see you again, Randall. On today's show, we'll interview Jordan Sillers, host of the Blood Trails podcast, which officially drops today. That's correct? We'll play a little game called Fake News. We'll interview Lauren Dulcator, who submitted one of the most unusual customer service requests in the history of First Light. And finally, we'll look back at the good old days in another installment of Throwback Thursday.
Starting point is 00:02:54 Then here I write, did we have any plugs? And then below that, Corey has added, Season 13 of Meat Eater keeps rolling on with the second episode, which dropped a few days ago, Steve's Montana muzzleloader mule deer hunt. Next Monday is Steve and Evan Felker's Alaska Black Bear Hunt. And we also just dropped a thrilling Ryan Callahan deer and elk combo hunt that is sure to please viewers.
Starting point is 00:03:20 Well said. That was a nice touch. Yeah, there you go. Boys, how are we doing today? Oh, we're good. It's a good week in Montana. It's hunting season. Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:28 Oh, my goodness. Fall is in the air. Deep. Falls in the air, but we're choking on it. Some of us have already closed the book. Some of us had a short elk season. On the chapter of our hunting season. So, Corey, how was your weekend?
Starting point is 00:03:42 Oh, it was fantastic. Got into a bunch of elk. Ooh. With more elk than people, which is usually my goal. Tell me more. That's good. On opener. Like did he have a win right there.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Yeah, agreed. Because, man, I've had some openers where I see a pile of people and zero elk or you know more people than elk but so yeah had a good plan rolling into opening morning and uh didn't get it done watched a few elk fall from other groups of hunters but uh saturday was tough for us the weather was just oh windy as get out geez we joked multiple times we should have just brought a flag or excuse me a kite with us a flag too a wave up on the side of the mountain you could have also stuffed uh your backpack full of elk meat so that it catches a lot of wind spins you around as you walk down the mountain.
Starting point is 00:04:26 I like, I could have used this. That was my innovation. A little added weight would have kept me up right. It actually makes you very unstable. But Sunday I helped the buddy get a nice bowl, uh, which was fantastic. Um, not too bad of a pack out, beautiful day on Sunday. Oh, and, uh, gorgeous. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:44 I'm still hunting myself, though. I'm, I'm a little picky still. We got a long season and I, something about having a tag, deer and elk tags in your pocket in late November. Oh, that's a beautiful thing. I'll trade you my deer tag for your elk tag. Not even, not a chance, man. I don't know if that's how it works.
Starting point is 00:05:00 No, sure. I don't even think about deer until my elk's down. Seth, I'd trade you my deer tag for your elk tag, but that thing ain't good no more. That's right, brother. Yeah, you guys are inseparable. We're getting so good at this. Shut the hell up. We're getting so good at this.
Starting point is 00:05:18 Yeah, opener was a good one for me. And you. Tell me more. uh well and then i'll tell you more i saw more people than elk by far darn it um which you know that's how it goes around here but you know one thing i like about the opener is all the people just get the elk moving around stuff's happening yeah heavy but i just feel like i'm always in it it's never a quiet day yeah no matter how many people around you just feel like anything could happen at any moment and that's what i experienced um saw a lot
Starting point is 00:05:51 dudes in openings, open areas. Every open area that I glassed, every ridge had orange on it. So I was like, you know what? I bet the boys aren't in the timber sneaking around, you know. You bet they, oh, the boys being the people. The people, yeah. Yeah. I thought by the boys you met the elk and in fact, you were thinking the opposite that the boys would be in the timber. Yes. Sneaking around if they were the elk were the boys. Exactly. That's not confusing at all. No, not at all. Um, so yeah, I started doing some timber sneaking and, and, and just bumped into some bowls and got one of them. I'd like to put it on the record that when Seth talks about elk hunting and he visualizes how he'd like his elk season to turn out, he often described sneaking
Starting point is 00:06:31 through the timber and shooting a bullet at close range. So when you texted me that, I like that stuff. Oh, I was delighted for you. Yes. It was it was exactly how I wanted it to go down, really. So. Happy for you. And, you know, I lucked out and had a very short pack out. That's great. Which never. happens. That's great. And now you have elk in the freezer for your growing family. That's right. Beautiful. What's your son's?
Starting point is 00:06:59 Fuck. Did I blow it? No, it's announced. We got one on the way. Yeah. Yeah. The blood rushes for Randall's face. This is live, Randall. He's going to, yeah, yeah. Let's go back and cut that. And if we could trim that out for the YouTube audience, that would be fantastic.
Starting point is 00:07:17 And done. Yeah, I mean, you're going to feed that animal to your own blood. Yeah, which is cool to think about. Beautiful. Yeah, get ready to throw that meat in a blender. Yeah. A strong, handsome young Morris. That's right.
Starting point is 00:07:31 Little meat smoothies for the young ins. That's right. What's your story now? Actually, Spencer Newhart's in the chat, which we all love. He says, now Seth has to get back at Randall by telling a secret about him. Ooh. Secret secrets are no fun unless you tell everyone. What secrets do I have?
Starting point is 00:07:47 all the secrets I know about Randall would put him in jail. So, yeah. Let's avoid those. Thanks for asking about my elk hunt. Yeah. It's great opening morning. I was with a close buddy. We packed in a day before opener, set up a nice little camp.
Starting point is 00:08:07 Spent a good long time. Actually, I haven't told you this part of my story. It's been a good long time pumping water and filling up our water bladders. and my buddy bent down to re-rig the filter and his can of bear spray hooked on something. Oh, you did tell me about this. And so I'm standing like five feet away and he's bent over and I just hear this, sorry to the listeners, and I thought it was a bear. I mean, they should really look into making bear spray deployments not sound like bears.
Starting point is 00:08:41 Because at first I thought it was just a bear huffing. And then I realized he had just fired off, you know, a one second burst of bear spray. And I immediately thought we were going to have to evak, as they say. Thankfully, it just went straight into his backpack. And once we realized we didn't have any on our hands or faces, we scrubbed his backpack with snow. And to be honest, a bear could probably smell it, but we couldn't. Interesting. So that's great.
Starting point is 00:09:11 Yeah. Then spotted some elk. then Saturday morning is the opener. Didn't see any folks. Saw a lot of elk. And they moved on to public land, which is where we had permission to hunt. And got to a couple of bulls,
Starting point is 00:09:27 a couple smaller bulls, sneaked across the property line there. And I had an opportunity for a shot with my rifle. And I placed the bullet accurately. And tremendous damage. The elk went down quickly. And then we packed it out. out and we were back sleeping in, well, we were sleeping in separate beds, but we were sleeping in bed at my house that night.
Starting point is 00:09:50 Lovely. Each with, I had two dogs. He had one. What time of morning did you shoot that bull? Late morning, like around 10.30. Mine was 9.30. Yeah. And it's odd because we killed the exact same bull.
Starting point is 00:10:08 Yes. So at some point, we're going to have to bring our bulls together and try to decide. if a man could tell the difference between the two because they're remarkably similar. They are remarkably similar. Yeah, the bull we killed was at high noon the day after. Really? Yeah, never give up throughout the day.
Starting point is 00:10:25 Yeah. High noon. Yeah. He's wandering around. It is funny. I've killed some things by just thinking to myself, well, I'm not going to kill anything if I go home now. And then it happens.
Starting point is 00:10:37 What was that bowl? Was that a five by five? It was, yep. Ten, just a, just a, just three ten pointers, you know? I'm not sure what that means. Yeah, five by five. That's 30 points altogether. Wow.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Great work. Congrats, fellas. Thanks. Joining us on the line first is friend of the program, Meteor Managing Editor-Editor-Editor, Jordan Sillars. His new podcast Blood Trails is officially out as of today. Thursday, October 30th. So go subscribe and check it out.
Starting point is 00:11:06 Jordan, welcome to the show. Hey, good to be here. You just had a successful hunt of your own. if I recall correctly from the Graham. I did, yes. Yeah, I got to go out to Colorado and get a mule deer. Very nice. Nice.
Starting point is 00:11:23 Tons of fun. Is that a first muleer as a Texan? It is, yes, first muleeer as a Texan. So, you know, nothing huge, but three by three I was very happy with. Very cool. And, yeah, it was a good end to about five or six days of hunting. Nice. Very cool.
Starting point is 00:11:40 Way to go. Congrats. Jordan, the first episode of Blood Trails comes out today, and it involves the disappearance of a hunter named Bob Christian. Can you tell us a little bit about the facts of the case? Yes, so Bob Christian was an 18-year-old kid. He's a college freshman. He lived in Madison, Wisconsin, and he had a plan to go hunting on the opening day of archery season. And this was all the way back in 1977. So he was, you know, one of the, one of the, the, earlier people to really get into archery hunting whitetail. And so the plan was he was going to drive up to his buddy's house in Baraboo,
Starting point is 00:12:24 which is about a 45-minute drive from where he lived. They were going to, he was going to spend the night at his friend's house on Friday. They were going to get up early on Saturday and go hunting. But Bob was supposed to be at his friend's house around 6 p.m. for dinner, but he never showed up. And this was obviously before a cell phone, so they couldn't just call him. And so they waited and waited and waited. He didn't show up all that Friday night.
Starting point is 00:12:50 They went out looking for him, and they found the car he was driving in a kind of a remote area that was actually an area that he had experience hunting in, but that's not the area that they had planned to hunt. And the weird thing about this is the car was found, but all of its wheels and tires had. had been removed. I think the battery had been removed, a few other things. And so they found the car. They looked inside. Bob wasn't in there. All of his archery stuff was gone. All of his hunting gear was gone. I think there was a letterman jacket that he owned was still in there, but there was no sign of him. So they searched the area for several days, still couldn't find him. And to this day, no one knows what happened to him. And there were a few kind of weird things they found out
Starting point is 00:13:43 throughout the investigation. A few people saw the car that Friday night driving around. It's unclear if Bob was the one driving it. And to this day, no one quite knows what happened. So that's the first episode of Blood Trails. It's out now. It's on Spotify, you know, anywhere you get your podcasts. So you can go go check that out. So how did you first learn about Bob's story? It's a 50-year-old cold case, and I don't think anyone here who's on our radar. How did you find out about this? Yeah, so I found out about this because the detective who's currently in charge of the case for the Sock County Sheriff's Office, he reached out to me. We put out that first kind of pilot episode of Blood Trails back in March, and he heard about it, and he reached out and said, you know, I'm working on this cold case. It's about a hunter.
Starting point is 00:14:36 I think it's something that you guys could cover on blood trails. And he's really been pushing to get, you know, more people to get the word out about the case. Because at this point, there isn't a whole lot of physical evidence that's available. And so it really will come down to someone coming forward who knows something. And so he's trying to get the word out. So I assume you have included that investigator in your reporting. Who else did you speak to while researching this case? Yeah, so I talked with the detective, Tyler Pointin,
Starting point is 00:15:11 and then he connected me with Bob's sister and then also with that friend that he was supposed to meet. And so for this episode, you know, I talked with really the people who have the most knowledge about this case who are still alive. Bob's parents have passed away, but I was able to talk with his sister and then his friend.
Starting point is 00:15:34 So, and they were very kind, you know, it's, it's one of those things that is difficult for them to talk about, but they want to know what happened to their brother and to their friend. And so they were willing to talk with me. What, what drew you to the story? I mean, obviously there's a lot of cases like this. Is there, is there anything in particular that grabbed your attention when you heard about it? I mean, there's, with this particular story, there are some very strange. details that are really kind of inexplicable. One of the people who saw Bob's car saw it, it had pulled up the driveway of a cabin where a nun lived. And she talked with the person driving the car. And he said, I'm looking for my friend Bob. But the description she gave of this person driving Bob's car looked a lot like Bob. And so that's difficult to explain. there's also a potential connection to the Chicago serial killer, John Wayne Gacy. And so that's, you know, and that's currently being investigated. We're actually waiting right now for some DNA results to come back to see if there's a connection there.
Starting point is 00:16:51 So there's lots of interesting details. I also, I think with this podcast, you know, a true crime podcast about hunters and anglers, I think our audience has a really unique opportunity to push some of these cases forward because there'll be people in our audience who are from that area who know the place that Bob's car was found and so they might have some information. And I also think our audience is going to care about these stories more so than your kind of standard, true crime, general audience. I think, you know, we want to figure out what happens.
Starting point is 00:17:31 to these people who love to do the same things that we love to do. Now, you mentioned that there's these bizarre details. What's the most surprising thing you turned up in this case during your reporting? Yeah, I mean, I think it's that John Wayne Gacy connection, which Gacy was arrested, I believe, in 1978. So that was just one year after Bob disappeared. And the fact that we just now are kind of learning about this, the detective who's in charge got a tip from someone who said that Gacy did some work at their, at there, I believe it was an inn or a hotel. Gacy did some work there, which is around the same area that Bob disappeared, around the same time. And so they're looking at some of the DNA from some Gacy victims that haven't been identified.
Starting point is 00:18:31 And so just the fact that it's been almost 50 years and we're still learning more, there are still leads to follow. And some of those leads are very surprising and, I mean, obviously very disturbing. I think that was definitely the most surprising thing from this episode. This is obviously just the first of your series. Can you give listeners a sense of what else they can expect in the weeks ahead? how frequently these will be coming out? Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:19:04 So this first season is going to have eight episodes. The first one comes out today, and then they'll come out every Thursday until those eight episodes are over. And so the next two episodes is going to be a two-part series about a, there was, in 1996, a 15-year-old girl was murdered. They couldn't figure out who did it. Last year, they found her killer. It turned out to be a BLM biologist who still lived in the area. He was also a big time hunter, very involved in the hunting community.
Starting point is 00:19:39 And so those two episodes cover that investigation, how he was found out. And then we really dive into this question of how could someone do this, right? And then go on to kind of live a normal life. So that's the next two episodes. The one after that is about a hunter who was murdered with his own rifle. They don't know who did it. The one after that is a similar kind of disappearance case, similar to the Bob Christian case, but there's a lot more information. Detectives think they know who did it, but they've, you know, been unable to basically gather enough evidence.
Starting point is 00:20:17 There's a story of a hunter who was stabbed 17 times. He was found out in the woods, and they ruled it as suicide. So we get into that. and some of the reasons, the evidence for that. So lots of interesting stuff. This is not a podcast where every story is a cold case and you don't have a resolution. Some of these stories have been solved. But I would say there's still a lot of questions, a lot of unanswered questions with each of these cases.
Starting point is 00:20:45 So really excited to share these stories. And like I said, hopefully we can move some of these cases forward. Hopefully some of our audience will know something and be able to help out. Yeah. Yeah, Jordan, we do have one more question for you from the chat. Spencer wants to know the story behind the baseball on the shelf behind you. Oh, that's just Little League. I got the game ball one game.
Starting point is 00:21:12 That's awesome. That's wholesome. Yeah, thank you. I'm glad you ditch that at some point. Yeah. No, man. No, it was a shining moment of my baseball career, honestly. Beautiful.
Starting point is 00:21:24 beautiful beautiful well jordan uh good to see you congrats on this i know it's been a uh tremendous amount of work and uh folks are excited so again to the audience uh check out blood trails go find it subscribe and uh you can look forward to eight episodes in the coming weeks yeah absolutely and just one quick plug um if you have a story you think we should cover uh we have an email address set up it's just blood trails at the meat eater.com. So, you know, send me your ideas. I'm always looking for a good story. Awesome.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Thank you, Jordan. Appreciate it. See you, Jordan. Good work, Jordan. Yeah. Got goosebumps. Watch your six while you're out in the woods. Yeah.

Every hunter knows that the wilderness is full of surprises. But sometimes what you find out there isn't an elk or a bear. It's something darker. It never made sense what law enforcement was saying to us.
Starting point is 00:23:51 How could there have been no marks on her? This season on Blood Trails were following the trail of seven cases that start in the field and end in the shadows. Each story begins with the hunter stepping into the wild, but not all of them come back. All theories are out there. You know, everything from murder to UFOs to Bigfoot. I'm Jordan Sillers, a journalist with over a decade of experience investigating stories about hunting, fishing, guns, crime. Join me as we track the truth through tangled cover and cold case files, where every trail tells a story, and every story leaves its own trail of blood. Blood trails. Listen now on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:24:36 Our next segment is fake news. Let's play fake news. A peat tape and rush a pizza game balloon working for flying a UFO. Steve is a better shot than yon is so is that so This opportunity comes once every few weeks You can do anything you set your minds to guys Except like teleport or fly or something Stuff like that Was that a new touch at the end?
Starting point is 00:25:03 No, it's just everyone always talks over it So it's been hidden There's a few of those in some of my drops Where there's like a little sneak sneak at the end I've never mentioned it but thanks for calling out of it A little slim shady mixing there Fake News is where I read a series of headlines
Starting point is 00:25:17 in which a real one is hiding among three impostors. Your job is to figure out which one is true. Can't wait. Bring it on. Are you ready for this, Ben? Randall? Yes.
Starting point is 00:25:29 And Phil, would you keep score, please? Probably not. It's a joke. It's so simple. I'll keep score. Thanks. Our first headline comes from the venerable
Starting point is 00:25:43 journalistic outlet, People.com. sorry randall hold on a sec here no it's fine you just make some small talk no it's not your fault at all no no i didn't really think about how complicated it was on your end of things and i should just killed time for longer randall i forget i see you have it up now it's up now may i proceed i'll do that again great our first headline comes from the venerable journalistic outlet people dot com formerly people magazine. Oh. Aggressive blank destroyed after escaping from overturned
Starting point is 00:26:17 truck, but one is still on the loose. Oh, I just read this. No. Oh, that kind of don't show them. Don't show them your answer. Hold on. I'll read that headline again for those of you playing at home. Aggressive blank destroyed after escaping
Starting point is 00:26:33 from overturned truck, but one is still on the loose. Man. Your options are A, lions, B, elephants, C, monkeys, or D, wild horses. All could be aggressive. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that was a trick. That was tricky for me when I was coming up with the fake answers,
Starting point is 00:26:57 as I had to choose aggressive animals that could be turned, could be in an overturned truck. You don't think the word destroyed harmed the animal, do you? I do, actually. I do. I did not hear about this. That's a clinical term. A, lions, B, elephants,
Starting point is 00:27:13 destroyed a couple of elk this weekend. C monkeys or D wild horses. Interesting. Yes. What could it be? Seth's got an answer because Seth keeps up with his social media headlines. People magazine.
Starting point is 00:27:26 I thought this might be too obvious because it's been all over. Has it? Yeah. Interesting. I must have been in the woods. That shouldn't shape your thinking, Corey. You should just follow your gut.
Starting point is 00:27:36 Let's go. A, lions, B, elephants, C, monkeys, or D, wild horses. Well, golly, you can't hide an elephant. This. Here we go. No, this is good. This is good. No.
Starting point is 00:27:51 Okay, definitely haven't heard about it. Let's go. All right, flip over your boards, gentlemen. We both say C monkeys. Darn it, you both got it correct. I saw a gripping grin. I'm going to, really? Yeah, so, like, some hunters got after him, I guess.
Starting point is 00:28:07 Or unless that was fake news, but I saw on the webs that, uh, I don't know. Some hunter was sitting in a deer stand and one came by. I don't know. I don't know who got the monkeys, but I can tell you that a truck carrying 21 rhesus monkeys from Tulane University to a testing facility in Florida overturned just on Tuesday, setting the primates loose. The Jasper County Sheriff's Department posted on Facebook that, quote, the monkeys are approximately 40 pounds, aggressive to humans, and carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.
Starting point is 00:28:41 Oh, that's great. In a separate statement, Tulane University said the monkeys had not been exposed to any of these. Sure. People contacted the Jasper County Sheriff's Department who had no additional comment about the discrepancy and information and referred to to follow their social media pages for updates on the case. So if a deer hunter got one of those monkeys, I'm not sure I assumed it was the sheriff's department. But boy, stay tuned for on the missing monkey. Real exciting start to our game. We're tied at one to one. Oh, recess monkey.
Starting point is 00:29:15 Our second headline comes to us from the old gray lady, the New York Times. Beware of Swiper, a blank at Grand Teton Park with a penchant for footwear. Yep. Is it A, a black bear? be a marmot, see a fox, or D, a seasonal employee. Again, the headline reads, Beware of Swiper, a blank at Grand Teton Park with a penchant for footwear. And your options once again are a black bear, a marmot.
Starting point is 00:29:49 Do you know this one? A fox. A pretty good guess. Or a seasonal employee. All options would potentially snag a footwear piece and take it away. back to their whole seasonal employee would be living in a hole somewhere for sure it would be weird though if a seasonal employee got a nickname from a newspaper well i don't know i guess they could you know it's like the boston strangler set's got an answer set are you confident cori's got an answer they're pretty good i narrowed it down to two i think all right based on just your gut yeah perfect that's how we like to play around here flip those boards over boys let me
Starting point is 00:30:30 see him. Seth says C. Oh. A fox. Corey says, B, a marmot. We have a correct answer in the room. It's a fox. Woo! I've been gutshot. Oh, look at that. Look at that photo there. There he is.
Starting point is 00:30:47 The National Park Service announced on a poster wanted for Grand Theft Footwear with an illustration of a fox gripping a sneaker in its teeth. Crimes. Stealing left shoes. Parentheses, they taste better. Flip flops and camper's pride. This whimsical wanted poster, which branded the fox, the sneaker snatcher, the midnight
Starting point is 00:31:07 mismatcher, and Swiper the Fox, was part of the park's initial effort to warn campers that parkour's shoes had been vanishing. But last week, unfortunately, the tally of perloined footwear rose to 32 because visitors were intentionally leaving out their footwear as offerings to the Fox, just in case he comes by. I wonder what he's doing with him. Yeah. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:31:31 I don't know. I've got a den of shoes. Yeah, that'd be interesting to see. I hope we get some more information on Swiper and Fox for a future episode of fake news, because I don't know anything. So now it seems we have a one to two deficit here. Seth is in the lead. Corey is losing by one point.
Starting point is 00:31:53 That is correct. And there is one headline left to go. Phil, let's give it to him. A fisherman went digging for work. Worms. Instead, he found 13 pounds of blank. Is it Civil War cannonballs? Marijuana, ancient treasure, or dinosaur teeth. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:32:13 Where was he? That's going to give him away. Is it, though? A fisherman went digging for worms. He found 13 pounds of blank. Is it Civil War cannonballs, marijuana, ancient treasure, or dinosaur teeth? I wasn't around back in the Civil War, but I feel like a cannonball would have weighed about 13 pounds. You know, I had, I had problems when I was coming up with my fake answers.
Starting point is 00:32:40 I had problems thinking of things that would be in the ground that you'd measure in poundage. Okay, so it's not a. No, no, it could be. Well, of course. Because if they were different sized cannon balls, you wouldn't say a small one and a medium one. Sure. Chunks of balls. 15 pounds. The chat is reprimanding all of you for not having.
Starting point is 00:33:00 any reference to Dora the Explorer when it comes to Swiper, the Fox who steals things. Oh, darn. Swiper, no swiping. Guilty as, I've heard that before. Guilty is charged. I think he wears a little Zorro mask. Not a, not a, not a, not a Dora guy.
Starting point is 00:33:15 It's a little, little past your time. But it helps. I didn't pick that one. Okay, good. Seth's got an answer. Corey's got an answer. Do you have a tiebreaker? They've got different answers.
Starting point is 00:33:25 No, I'm thinking of one as I do this. Uh, You ready, Corey? Yep, ready. Show me what you got, big boys. Cannonball. Corey says B, weed. Seth says A, cannonballs.
Starting point is 00:33:42 The correct answer is C, ancient treasure. Oh. A Swedish fisherman searching for gooey, juicy worms to use his bait near his summer home near Stockholm, instead struck something far more solid, a copper cauldron brimming with coins and jewelry. In total, the fine comprised 13 pounds of early Middle Ages silver. Are we good, Phil? Yeah, don't worry about the TV. This is, quote, this is probably one of the largest silver treasures from the early
Starting point is 00:34:13 Middle Ages that has been found in Sweden, says Sophia Anderson, the antiquarian at the Stockholm County Administrative Board. She says this in a translated statement, so I don't know the original Swedish. I assume that they translated her accurately. quote, we do not yet know how, excuse me, God. Just take a breath, Randall. We do not yet know exactly how many coins there are, but I believe it could be upward of 20,000. Wow.
Starting point is 00:34:40 A veritable fortune in middle-aged treasure. 20,000 coins or $20,000 worth of coins? 20,000 coins. I don't know if we have the exchange rate pinned down. That'd be interesting to know. But with that final question, Seth is the winner. of fake news by a score of two to one. Thanks for playing.
Starting point is 00:35:01 I enjoyed this. Good game. That was great. Back to our regularly scheduled programming. And that brings us to listener feedback, Phil. What does the chat have to say? Sorry if I'm rushing you. No, it's fine.
Starting point is 00:35:15 It's moving. It's very efficient, and I appreciate that. Yeah, I mean, that's the vibe we're going forward. Just when this show is run professionally, it kind of catches me off guard, you know. That's the vibe I'm going for here. Mogor asks When will daylight saving time End in Montana this year?
Starting point is 00:35:30 Ours just ended this past Sunday I didn't know that it's on different schedules Around the world But Mogore I believe ours is next week Next Tuesday? Saturday night Saturday night. Saturday night into Sunday
Starting point is 00:35:42 It's coming up soon I think this is going to shift our Hitting hours around a little bit here Sunset will be around 530 now Sunset a week from Thursday Sunset is at 4.30. Really? A week from today, yeah.
Starting point is 00:35:59 This time next week, sunset will be at 4.30. Yep. And... It's like barely light here. Yeah. Yeah. So we're going to have some earlier mornings, but also earlier evenings back at the tent.
Starting point is 00:36:10 True. Which I enjoy. Long nights. Interesting question, Mogore. Thank you. Yeah, we had a legitimate question about rifle calibers and the chap at Spencer Newhart that's just been fielding those. Is that the bullet question?
Starting point is 00:36:21 Yeah. Yeah, I like that one. well there is another bull asking if you guys are shooting copper oh yeah that's the one i saw okay no there was one about white tail calibers gotcha yeah i believe old set he is i'm shooting all copper um hornity cx bullet out of my seven prc that's what i shot that bull with hmm beautiful i am not same lead uh Seth is from Garrett why does Kelsey never paint a picture paint pictures of wiley I don't give an F about cowboys can I pet that dog can I pet that dog well
Starting point is 00:36:52 If you are willing to spend some money, she will do that. Yeah, I don't think that... Get that commission. I don't think that brush moves for free. The Cowboys pay the bills. Wiley is very photogenic. Yeah, beautiful animal. What else we got here, Phil?
Starting point is 00:37:08 Well, here's another caliber question. Justin is asking, does one of you shoot a Sig Cross and 300 win mag? And if so, do you like it? I have a Montana bear in Alaska. You know, it's a mushy sentence, but he's got some hunts and he wants to know if that's a good thing to go with. Corey? Yeah, I sure do. It's the SIG Cross Sawtooth and a 300 wind mag.
Starting point is 00:37:28 Love it. I will say I don't like carrying around the mountains. But when it's time to shoot something, it's a dream. Well, yeah, I mean, it's worth it to me. There's no free lunch. True. I have a SIG cross the original Magnum, not the Sawtooth, and 300 win mag. And yeah, my wife killed a Buffalo with it, shooting a copper bullet.
Starting point is 00:37:51 So just to tie those two questions together, those are that for some hosting. Good job, Randall. But yeah, 300 wind mag can't go wrong. No, unless you're recoil shy. Then you get a big break. Yep. Or a can.
Starting point is 00:38:04 Or a meat eater suppressor. Mm-hmm. Here's another plug for you. This question's from Dil Bean. Any thoughts on the 100-mile buffer zone bill for, quote, border security and SNR, unquote? We just released a bonus flop this morning. Steve talks to one of his buddies about this whole topic.
Starting point is 00:38:21 you can check that out about it's got Steve's thoughts in there the main the thing Steve said that I think kind of sums the whole thing up is if you have a group of people that are trying to do something very unpopular unsuccessfully for decades and then they try to frame actually it's about border security yeah right and then they introduce a bill it smells fishy so you know I don't know enough about it to speak to it knowledgeably check out the podcast check out the podcast yeah just stay out of the wilderness it's all I have to say uh Ryan asks Randy, which I guess is something people call you, when and what was your most recent
Starting point is 00:38:55 cased meat meal? Great question. Great question. Couldn't have been that long ago. No. No, it wasn't. Saturday, right? Didn't you say something about a corn dog? No, that was the bull that I'm going to talk about.
Starting point is 00:39:11 Oh, sorry. I'm jumping ahead here. Gosh, that's a good question. I know I've been eating Bratworths at home regularly. Uh, sorry, Ryan, I don't have a good answer for you. It wasn't that long ago. A couple weeks got to be within the last couple weeks.
Starting point is 00:39:30 Within two weeks, within two weeks for sure. Well, that could be multiple questions. Caste is in like a sausage or Caste is in like the hot case from a gas station. Oh, hasn't been that long since I've tickled the hot case at town pump. That's where my head was at. Tickled the hot case at town pump. Yep. I think I read some online erotica, the same title.
Starting point is 00:39:54 Phil, please, you're live on air. I know. We got kids, actually. What else you got? Phil. Steve accuses me of having a nun fetish in next week's episode of the Meteor podcast. So I don't really, everything's out the window now. Stay tuned, folks.
Starting point is 00:40:09 Yeah. Should you do one more here? Yeah. I don't. Let's see what's, yeah. Here's one for all of you. Phil, are you playing Destiny Rising? No.
Starting point is 00:40:17 I, um, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, this is. I don't know if I've said this before. I have played thousands, literal thousands of hours of Destiny 2. And much like my game fuel, I had to quit that cold turkey. I do not play Destiny anymore. Destiny Rising.
Starting point is 00:40:32 You okay, Randall? Destiny Rising is the new mobile destiny game. I will not touch it. I have never touched it. Take that to the bank for all of you who care. Gosh. Which is Azor King. Well, that's a fantastic listener feedback section.
Starting point is 00:40:49 Thanks for wrapping. up, Phil. Keep the questions coming. Gang, keep them coming. We'd love some more feedback. We're going to do an extended feedback at the end of this episode. My co-host just learned. Up next, we're going to speak with Lauren Dulcator,
Starting point is 00:41:04 who submitted one of the most hair-raising customer service emails in First Lights history after a tree limb impelled her leg. Lauren, welcome to the show. Hello. Thank you for joining us. So as I understand it, you needed a replacement set of kiln baseliers after a recent hunt in Wyoming. What were you hunting? And when was this?
Starting point is 00:41:30 It was about five weeks ago. We were hunting archery elk. It was middle of September. And, yeah, we were there up near Dubois, Wyoming, hunting. elk for about a week and um yeah it was the week was off to a great start we uh got into some elk and had a lot of we had a close encounter with a moose um it was just off to a great start and then um Friday on day five we uh everything kind of changed yeah can you can you describe uh the incident that led to your injury here what happened uh yeah so we were driving a side by side
Starting point is 00:42:24 um early morning so it was still dark and we were about 45 minutes to an hour that we needed to get up a pretty rough road to get where we had watched some elk go into some timber the night before so we felt like we had a good chance but we needed to get up there before first light and um We've driven up that road many times, but for some reason, we were going up, and my hunting partner was driving, and I was in the passenger seat, and I don't remember if there was like something in the road or just like a really big pothole or something, and he kind of tried to miss it, and we got too close to the edge, and there was a, we were driving through a burn, and there was an old lodge pulled tree that was hanging over the edge of the road and when we hit it it came through the side-by-side door
Starting point is 00:43:23 and went into my leg. Wow. I will just say I have some pictures that Lauren shared with us. They are not gory, but I would say one of them is rather upsetting. At least when I saw it,
Starting point is 00:43:36 I got like full body chills. So I'm going to pull that up in a little bit if you don't want to see that. Look away. Yeah. Lauren, can you describe what was going through your head right as that happened. Did you know right away or did the um did the side by side immediately
Starting point is 00:43:52 come to a stop? Like what was what was the first so the first thing that happened or the next thing that happened? Yeah, um, the side by side came to a complete stop. Um, and me and my partner kind of just looked at each other and I felt a pressure against my leg. I didn't really feel any sharp pain or anything. So immediately I just thought that the side by side door kind of like pinned me and my leg was stuck. And then I reached down because he was starting to put it in reverse. And I just kind of had a weird feeling and I reached down and I could feel something going into my leg. So I told him to stop and I was like, I think something's in my leg. And he's like, what do you mean? And so I turned on my headlamp and looked down and I could see that that tree was in my leg.
Starting point is 00:44:45 Oh, brutal. How did your partner respond? Was it just the two of you? Yeah, it was just the two of us. He responded pretty well. Obviously, we were both shocked. He put it into park and we both work in the medical field.
Starting point is 00:45:06 So I feel like that kind of helps a little bit. Yeah, that's a plug. Obviously, if you. you get impaled by something the last thing you want to do is pull it out right so i told him to put it in park and told them to come around the side of the side by side so we could see if i was still attached to the tree or if the branch had broke um which luckily it had that would have been a whole other one of trying to get off of that um but yeah just from the crash the uh fender flare over the side-by-side had enough pressure that it broke the branch or end of the tree, actually.
Starting point is 00:45:46 But there was about three, probably about three feet of it hanging off from my leg. And we were able to get the side-by-side door open and kind of... She'll be right back. We were able to get the side-by-side open and situate the piece of wood into the side-by-side-by-side. with me. And I kind of just had to almost stand up with my good leg and hold on to the ceiling of the side by side and keep my legs straight for a 20-minute ride back down the mountain. Oh, my gosh. And then what, what, it's obviously at some point you got medical attention from first responders. What was that like? Did you drive to the hospital or did they come out
Starting point is 00:46:32 to, to pick you up? Or what did that look like? Um, so I keep a Garmin in reach for obviously things like this, but I knew, because we've hunted there for a few years, we knew that we were only about 20 minutes from cell service and we needed to get down the mountain anyways. Um, and where we had cell service, we knew an ambulance could get there and there'd be enough room for a helicopter to land. So we got down there called 911 and they sent a, ambulance that was stationed down in Dubois, which was only about 15 minutes from where we were. So they sent an ambulance up and got an IV started and helped me out with meds and trying to figure out if we were able to drive to a hospital because we were about an hour and a half from the nearest hospital. And at this point, I'm sure the pain had set in. yeah definitely it was more so like cramping pain like my muscles were obviously trying to
Starting point is 00:47:44 reject whatever was in my leg yeah um and i think with enough adrenaline nothing was sharp pain but definitely was scared of what kind of outcomes might be ahead um but yeah so we were on the scene for probably about an hour, and then they decided they wanted to fly me to a trauma center because we were over four-hour drive from the nearest trauma center. And so, yeah, they landed a helicopter and flew me to Idaho Falls. Wow. After you got to the hospital, what were the extent of your injuries, and how are you doing today? I got extremely lucky with the path that the tree went in.
Starting point is 00:48:34 It missed bone and arteries and everything that's super important. It did get my glute muscle a little bit because it went about six inches into my leg. But yeah, I got there. They did some CTs really quick, make sure that I didn't hit any arteries that. would cause me to bleed out or anything like that. And I was in surgery within a half hour and they just went in and took it out and cleaned everything. The biggest worry was infection. So the surgeon did really good and got it all cleaned out. And yeah, I'm really lucky. I was walking within two hours of surgery. That's unbelievable. And yeah, I was actually,
Starting point is 00:49:26 able to go on a hunt last week that's awesome tags nice that's great amazing yeah did you get uh did you get your replacement base layers yet from first light i hope the answer is yes otherwise this can be tremendously embarrassing they they have sent them they're on their way uh it's more on my end i'm having a little issues with a change of address situation oh sure um customer service was great and they sent them out right away and um yeah it's turned into quite the story yeah that's going to be a story that's going to be a hunting camp story for the ages yeah yeah luckily everything turned out good yeah i'm glad i'm glad to uh hear that you got back out there uh that was my next question is what the rest your season looks like so i'm glad to hear
Starting point is 00:50:19 that you uh got back out there and that you weren't more seriously injured by this it's uh very lucky that guys have the medical training that you do because I think had some other folks been in that same situation, Coolers' heads would not have prevailed. Yeah, I'm very thankful for that background. Lauren, thanks for sharing your story with us. Good luck out there this fall. And yeah, incredible story and glad you're okay. And please reach as should anything like this happen again, fingers crossed it doesn't but please please reach out and uh and yeah it's great to chat with you sounds great thank you guys for having me on thanks lauren thanks lauren good luck all right bye oh brutal yeah i'm still tense yeah my body's tense yeah i knew a friend of my
Starting point is 00:51:12 sorry a mother of one of my friends growing up had a similar deal riding a quad through the woods and had a stick, basically ride up the side of her knee and enter her leg. After getting flipped up from a tire. Yeah. Yeah. That's, uh, gnarly. That's super gnarly. Um, I think we meant to do this, but it's kind of an ironic show with Halloween tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:51:39 We got a lot of gore and murder and, you know, Halloween-esque. That we did not think about that, but man, those pictures are. Happy Halloween. Make me shaky. Do you need a sip of water? Are you good? You need a second? No.
Starting point is 00:51:52 Okay. No, I'm good. I'm good. It's the responsibility of the host to keep this thing moving. But I am affected by that story. And I'm really glad that they sent out those replacement base layers. I figured I could be setting us up for tremendous embarrassment as a company. And I was going to offer to send them myself, go down to the store and, you know, use the employee discount and all that.

Starting point is 00:54:58 there we go to 1977 throwback I can't believe it did I mention Stephen Brody are old as shit for today's back Thursday, we got a real treat
Starting point is 00:55:16 for you, folks. We each brought in our first bull elk. And we're going to share those stories. Maybe we should go in order of trophy size. Oh. Because I didn't realize we were bringing in our first
Starting point is 00:55:32 six points. But Seth, for those of you who weren't in this room before the show started, this is all Randall has been able to talk about for the last hours. Yeah, I thought we were bringing in raghorns. You said, I can't help. things leaning up against the wall up to my armpit. Seth's like, I can't help it.
Starting point is 00:55:48 I mean, it's not my first bowl was a six point. It's not a great bowl. I mean, it's a good bowl. It's a great first bowl, but I didn't realize that we were going to do this thing. So, Seth, why don't you tell us the story of your first bowl? It's not a huge six point. No, it's not. It's the biggest ball in the room.
Starting point is 00:56:05 It's barely a six point, just so everybody knows. Is the camera wide enough to get this? Just, just barely, Seth. This is, this is my first. Let me get up to the mic, so Phil doesn't yell on me. Thank you. This is my first bull that I ever killed. And it just so happened that this was back in 2016, my first hunting season in Montana.
Starting point is 00:56:29 How old were you? I don't know, 26, 26. 25? To be 25 again. Young buck. But yeah, so I just recently become a resident in 2016. I went to FWP headquarters in Helen and picked up my tags. And then the next day I went up to a hunting spot that I had been scouting.
Starting point is 00:56:53 Wait, this was literally the day after you bought your tag. Yeah. Amazing. And was deer hunting. I was deer hunting this spot that I had been looking at some big deer at. And, you know, I just happened to come across this guy that was bedded in some willows way, way back in there. I was with good buddy Rick Hutton. Shout out Rick.
Starting point is 00:57:14 What's up, Rick? Um, so yeah, I ended up shooting this bull at last light. And, um, I, you know, very new to elk hunting at this point in my life. Mm-hmm. And, uh, very new to Western hunting in general and, and didn't really totally know what I was doing. Um, so we, we gutted this thing and we were six miles from the truck. Ha ha ha ha ha. So instead of cutting it up that night in the dark, we just gutted it.
Starting point is 00:57:43 and got the guts away from it because we were in some gris country. Thick. Thick gris country. In fact, every time we pretty much scouted that area, we ran into grizzlies. But yeah, I gutted this thing, rolled the guts down the hill quite a ways away from it,
Starting point is 00:57:59 and we left to come back in the morning to cut it up. Which, you know, in hindsight, I probably would just stayed there and cut the thing up. Yeah, but just not shot at six miles deep. Yeah, that too. but that night so we started hiking back
Starting point is 00:58:17 to the truck and it was well after dark and the wind picked up and there was like a cold front coming in that night and so you know Rick and I we were hustling to get out of there
Starting point is 00:58:30 we kind of stripped down to our base layers so we weren't getting all sweaty and got back to the truck and Rick was acting real weird I couldn't figure out what was going on with him. He could barely talk. He was kind of drooling a little bit. Saying he was real hot.
Starting point is 00:58:49 Well, you know, later we figured out that Rick had gotten hypothermia. Walking out of there. Dangerous. So, yeah, that was my first experience. Quite an adventure. With hypothermia, like, seeing that for the first time. And, you know, also my first experience killing a six-point elk. Beautiful.
Starting point is 00:59:09 So, yeah, that's the story. guy. Thank you, Seth. Yeah. Randall, don't you think we should have started from the smallest to the largest? I think that would have been
Starting point is 00:59:16 like a more kind of satisfying progression. Yeah, I didn't think about that. That's fine. First bowls, they're all the same size in memory. This time next year when we do this again,
Starting point is 00:59:27 we'll do it that way. So let's see, if we're going in order here. I think yours is bigger than mine. Is it? No. Oh, you want me to go? I'll go.
Starting point is 00:59:36 I'll go. I'll go. I think mine's the smallest. Please, let me go. Randall, why don't you go? All right. Yeah, might be close. They're really similar.
Starting point is 00:59:44 Your points are longer. Hey, yeah. Thanks. Get my headset back on. This is a weird way to hold a bowl. Very well done European mounts, I will say. Yeah. This is my first bolt.
Starting point is 01:00:01 It's not going, for the listening audience, I'm having trouble fitting it in the frame with me. There you know. Not because it's large, but because. because I don't have good sense of my spatial awareness. So this bowl I killed in the fall of 2018, I believe. 2018, 2017. It was the day after Thanksgiving. And my brother-in-law was in town from Seattle,
Starting point is 01:00:37 and he's very interested in hunting and watch his media. eater and never been out hunting and I had a white tail bee tag for a unit west of Missoula and we thought well why don't we take Jason out in the morning and shoot a white tail dough and show them what hunting's all about you know and so we drive in there and it's basically like a Forest Service road and we'd hike down to the river and there's just some openings and see a lot of deer in there. And we pass a truck on the way in because it's the day after Thanksgiving. We pass a truck that's got like eight dudes in it, you know, from 10 years old to 80 years old. And they're like 300 yards from where we're parking. We're like, all right,
Starting point is 01:01:25 I guess, you know, we'll get this side. We start walking from the truck. I see a white tail dough. Phil, cue the picture. Oh, absolutely. Sorry. God, I did this again. end to you. Oh, no, you're fine. This is on me, Randall. I'm the engineer back here. I should be prepared for everything. So, Sidney started to take a picture. I'm setting up to shoot this white-tailed dough.
Starting point is 01:01:49 And next photo. Oh. I believe that was the next photo. Yeah, no, you did it right. It's my mistake again. It's a big dough down in that photo. Yeah, so, so I'm setting up to shoot this dough and it wanders behind a little
Starting point is 01:02:04 like finger ridge that's, you know, like 30 feet tall, just like a little finger going down to the river bottom. And so I said, oh, perfect. Let's drop down there. We'll walk up that finger and she'll walk up the other side because she was just kind of feeding up. And so we start walking up this finger and another dough squirts past. And I think to myself, oh, I should every now and then check over my right shoulder. Instead of just locking in on the left side, we're expecting this dough. I'm like, I should check over my right shoulder just to make sure nothing's over. there and uh we get a little ways up and i look over my right shoulder and i see this big tan body
Starting point is 01:02:43 and i think oh that's that looks like the color of an elk's body and then i look again and i'm like oh that looks like the color of an elk's neck and then i realize there's antlers and this thing is bedded uh broadside to me with just its face behind a tree like the tree was literally only covering its eye so it didn't see us uh it's probably at like 50 yards Wow. That's the little luck that it takes to harvest something that you stopped, you know, couldn't see you. And so Sydney, Sydney and Jason are standing next to me and they're looking to the left. And I hear one of them go, oh, there's the dough.
Starting point is 01:03:21 I just go, shut them. You know. And they have no idea what's happening. And then I start shooting. And I shoot this thing. It stands up. Two other bulls run off. I shoot it again and it flips over.
Starting point is 01:03:34 Oh, look at that shot. Well, well, so Phil, go back. Go back. Go back. Go back. Go back. Go back. Okay, next slide. So Sidney's like, Sydney's like, oh my God, Randall just shot his first bowl and like, I'm standing here. I just watched the whole thing. And so she started taking photos of me like walking down to it. And you'll see in this photo that it's lying. It's on a steep slope. Its head is kind of tucked under it and it's lying there. and we walked down to it and then you'll see in the next photo
Starting point is 01:04:06 all of a sudden it's getting up and so this thing as I approached it it started like donkey kicking and like I said its head was wrapped under it so all of a sudden it flips itself up and over like rodeo clown I am 10 feet away from it and it starts running away
Starting point is 01:04:25 and I'm thinking it's going to run to this truck with these other dudes and I'm just thinking my first bull is going to be shot by an entire extended clan and they're going to have a great Thanksgiving day and I'm going to have the bitterest Thanksgiving weekend of all time so then I start shooting it again so Phil if you'll proceed so we have this whole sequence of photos of it standing up again again your shoulder and your rifle you see that see rifle shouldered he's up and I'm like 20 yards away from it next one
Starting point is 01:04:57 you look closer than that next one oh I mean I was I was afraid it was going to kick me when it initially started freaking out um next one he's off next one finally oh there we go after like on my last the last round in the magazine uh he i mean he ran to the bottom of the hill and just stood there and i shot him again and finally tipped over and walked down there and uh pretty shocked by the whole thing this is like at nine o'clock uh you can see my face here uh we're in a lot of sick in that photo but you will see an FHF Bino harness and a first light blaze orange hat. Yeah, the suits aren't watching this. It's fine.
Starting point is 01:05:38 No, it's fine. It shouldn't be a big deal. And then the next photo that's me and Sydney. It was a very cool, cool thing to have her there for it. And then next photo, we had a little family, a little family pack out.
Starting point is 01:05:55 Yeah, he's packing out the hooves. And then we went to the old Thomas Marbar in Missoula watched some some football that's great had a few cold ones lovely you making glue with those hooves
Starting point is 01:06:08 or what yeah you know that's that was a mistake like I said oh oh yani we're just the live show ladies and gentlemen
Starting point is 01:06:20 we're talking bulls yonis petalus just walked into the studio janus petalus tell the folks how you're doing well I'm pretty hungry randall we have a lunch date right now. Oh my God, we're running over on time. It is. So you've literally interrupted the live show
Starting point is 01:06:35 to tell us that you want to go eat lunch now. Yeah. Well, we've got one story left here, and it's Corey Culkins. We're telling the story of our first bull elk. Oh, I'm here to listen. Yeah. Alright. Here's my first bowl. I was
Starting point is 01:06:52 a... Dandy. 14 or 15. Dandy. I can't quite remember exactly what year this was, but I think it was a Sophomore in high school, potentially. Anyway, Southern Montana, opening day. I do remember we glassed up Elk the night before, which back then, opener was on a Sunday.
Starting point is 01:07:12 Anybody remember I don't miss those days. And so Saturday, I remember glassing up a herd of elk. My dad and I walked up in the dark, like trying to get, you know, ahead of everybody else that we could see rolling in with their campers. And we get up on this saddle and then looking down below us, just see head, lamps galore coming up towards us, you know. So we're like, okay, well, we should be in the right
Starting point is 01:07:34 spot. This is, you know, a few hundred yards away from everybody else is coming to us. Yeah. Uh, of course, sun comes up, elk are gone. So we're kind of bumming. We hike up above the saddle to the top of the hill. And lo and behold, here comes this lone bull tongue just dragging as if he got bumped by somebody else. I want to say it was first 45 minutes of light. And, uh, he walked like I'm there with you. He walked right up. To me, three hundred, uh, excuse me, this was a 30 a six. I want to say like 60 yards away, whew, dumped them.
Starting point is 01:08:07 That's great. One shot. Fantastic. And, uh, yeah, I was pretty tickled, pretty blown away. And, uh, as we were packing them out, it took multiple trips to get them out, just my dad and I. And we passed this, uh, young gal who had harvested a giant six point right by the trailhead.
Starting point is 01:08:22 Oh, nice. They admitted they got a late start, you know, and came up after first light. And everybody had walked right by this stud. six-point bowl in the dark. You've always got a chance. Yeah. And so we got to see that on the way out. But yeah, and I remember my dad shot a spike later that day, back when you could shoot
Starting point is 01:08:40 spikes around here. Very cool. So, yeah. Thanks for Sharon. That's a great, it's a great ball. Yeah. And Seth, really quick, since you went through the trouble of sending it to me. Oh.
Starting point is 01:08:50 There's your photo. Oh, there it is. Look it. Handsome young buck. At 25 years old. He's got a full mustache. Still. That's really nice.
Starting point is 01:08:58 Way to go. He has an age of a day? BHA sticker on his... Yeah, on the rifle? You're walking the walk and talking the talk. And Rick knows how to take a good picture. I was wearing first light back then, too, and wearing FHFHF. Well, not all of us.
Starting point is 01:09:10 We're doing side work for first light on FHF. We're getting free stuff all the time. No, I bought that stuff. Okay. I would have been wearing some Walmart special. That brings us to the end of today's program. We've got a little bit of time for listener feedback. I know Janus is hungry.
Starting point is 01:09:28 I will, the first question I will, bring up is her next gun it says why is yonis not in wisconsin oh capital question oh good question that is a great question my cameras are blowing up everybody's killing deer in wisconsin and i'm not going for until a week from friday i'm going on the seventh because i'm going to be at the milwaukee meat eater store on the seventh uh for a meet and greet so if you're anywhere near milwaukee you've already killed a buck and you don't need to be in the woods on the seventh in the evening come and see me at the meat eater store in milwaukee but yeah i'll be hunting uh on the eighth saturday morning
Starting point is 01:09:59 in my opinion yani the eighth is the best day out of the year to be in the woods so you'll be there i'll be that's great phil what else we got here uh spencer asks what's for lunch what is for lunch uh bozman market in deli uh great your choice you mean the same place we yesterday it's yonis's favorite place in town um crank says that they shot a buck while listening to the podcast that's awesome that's awesome way to go send that in we'll we'll air it uh the next time i host How did you manage to do that? Actually, maybe we'll even have Crank as a guest. Crank, email radio at the meat eater.com.
Starting point is 01:10:36 Is that right? Is that right, Phil? Yeah, that sounds right. Yeah, let's hear the story of shooting a buck while listening to Meat Eater Radio Live. My guess is from the truck. Maybe a big old deer blind. Let's let him tell a story, him or her. Oh, it's just, yeah, mystery.
Starting point is 01:10:52 Canadian Hunter 21. A question for Randall, you just said, oh, to be 25 again. I'm turning 25 in a few months. What should I be planning for to me? make the most out of being 25. I like the look at that bridge in your profile picture. I bet a catfish lives under that. That's what I was thinking.
Starting point is 01:11:06 That's the first thing I thought. One or two. If I was 25 again, hmm, that's a great question. Go for a big hike. Your 40-year-old self was like, holy cow. Think about a place where you'd be like,
Starting point is 01:11:20 there's nobody 40 years old that's going to be in here, El Cunning. And then I'd go there. Yeah, there you go. Go do something stupid. And I'd just eat everything. everything. Nate says, how early do I start monitoring questions for chat?
Starting point is 01:11:32 Can I dump them before the waiting music even starts? Yes, you can. Get them in early. I can see them. It makes my job easier, actually. Phil doesn't lose anything. Mogor, our guy, yesterday I watched the meteor muzzleloader episode. Steve mentioned that Seth is really skilled with it.
Starting point is 01:11:46 But my question is, have Randall or Corey ever had the chance to harvest game with a muzzle? Nope. A loader. No, I'm usually tagged out by then. Let's see. Lori, I don't think there's any bird people in this room, but Lori's asking what your go-to grouse slayer is.
Starting point is 01:12:03 Ooh. Shotgun? She might be asking for more specifics, but, you know. Mine's an arrow with a judo point. Typically in archery season while I'm chasing elk. 12-gauge. 22s are great, too, though. 22s are great. The only grouse I've killed
Starting point is 01:12:20 have been with 22-caliber pistols. Great. Well, Yoss is looking at his phone. He looks starved. Yonis, how many more listener questions? John is bored. One more. Let's do one more. One more.
Starting point is 01:12:33 Aaron says I recently brined a turkey breast for 24 hours, but it came out too salty. How long do y'all brine for? Yanni, this is a good question for you. Yeah, it sounds like that was too long. I believe that in the meat eater cookbook, it's like 6 to 8. If that happens, you can desalt a brine turkey breast by just putting it into just plain cold water. it'll actually suck through osmosis, the salt will come back out into the water. But, yeah, I guess you could check it by just cutting a little sliver off the turkey breast
Starting point is 01:13:07 next time and frying it real quick and eating it and seeing how salty it is. Well, that was the most substantive thing that's been said in the past 66 minutes. So I think that's a good place to wrap up. Corey, Seth, as always, a true pleasure. Phil the engineer, wonderful job. streamline our process next week. So we won't. Folks out there, we thank you for listening,
