Welcome to Meadeer Trivia, the only game show where conservation always wins. There is a prize.
Starting point is 00:00:50 Meadeer will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winner's choosing. I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Randall, Seth, Corey, Nate, Marge, and Omar. This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from Meadaters for verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Meteor trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light, head for the mountains. All right, we're starting today's episode with a mailbag question. Hello, my name is Jefferson, and I have a question for the crew. I'm going to be a new father within the next few weeks. I understand that with a newborn and working full time, it'll be tougher to get into the woods and on the creek.
Starting point is 00:01:30 What advice do you have for balancing hunting and fishing with work plus a newborn? Corey, as the senior most outdoorsman in here with a child, what advice do you have for Jefferson? And then we're going to hear from Seth, who's had a baby for how long, Seth? Four and a half months. Can I guess what your advice is? And we'll hear from Omar, who's had a baby for how long? Seven months. Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:54 Corey. Sure. Randall, let's hear it. So how do you balance family fishing and hunting and work? And work? You let work slide, right? I wouldn't know. Let it slip a little.
Starting point is 00:02:07 I mean, gosh, that first year, my wife's a saint. I was, I guided nine weeks when my son was, whatever, six to nine months old. And she did everything. Not guiding people in, like, goose pits. Right, guiding elk hunters, like five days at a time. And then I'd come home for a couple days and just keep the breast pumps, sanitized, keep the house clean, keep the wife happy. Assuming there's a baby mama, it's usually how it works, right? In my experience.
Starting point is 00:02:38 I think so. Yeah, keep mom happy and balance. And if you can, I mean, if the weather permits, bring them with you. How old is Prince Marshall right now? He's doing good. He's eight. He's eight. He's thriving.
Starting point is 00:02:51 He's shooting a bow and getting ready. What about years one through eight then, beyond just that first year? Yeah, same thing. I mean, balance with your partner the best you can. You know, make sure she or he, whatever, gets their time. Yeah, and then you go get yours. Seth hasn't quit fishing one bit since he's been a bad. No, it's been a struggle to put my days in.
Starting point is 00:03:15 What advice do you have for Jefferson? You know, just when you are home and around and available, just help as much as possible. And then like Corey said, my wife's a saint. She's letting me get away with far more than I probably should be able to get away. away with. I think Bergel was a week old when I drove to South Dakota to pick up a boat. And then went on a fishing trip shortly after that. One thing that's helpful for us is as far as fishing is like all my fishing buddies. Their wives are friends with my wife and they all have young kids too. So like
Starting point is 00:03:59 try and plan a trip, a trip, family trip slash fishing. we all just end up at a place on a lake, you know, or like this past weekend, we fished a tournament and the wives like hung out with the kids during the day while we fished. It was, you know, there's ways around it. Just, I don't know, you kind of got to feel it out and figure out what's going to work for you and your family.
Starting point is 00:04:25 Seth has competed in two tournaments since he's been a dad. Yeah, well, one legit one. The other one was kind of made up. but but yeah. Omar, any advice? You know, we got this calendar.
Starting point is 00:04:39 It's like a, you know, Google calendar at home. We got this calendar back home. It's a lunar calendar. So I'll like set aside like my plans well in advance before I know it,
Starting point is 00:04:51 you know, kind of like we do at work. So, you know, I got Alaska Caribou coming up August 7th through the 18th. And she kind of knows it. And then the weeks and days leading up before that, I'm just trying to be present around as much as I can.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Help with the time. the baby and then September's pack too I think I'm gonna be gone from the second all the way to end September on you know personal trips and work trips so just making sure it's like known communicated and we're on the same page and um you know one thing I think is key to that like Seth talked about was like um your wife having support around there too to uh you know if something does come up you know she's got friends or family she could reach out too I know it's not always the case for everyone but um you know friends help a lot a lot and uh but i think at the end of the day like baby's gonna be fine go
Starting point is 00:05:39 and get some meat you're providing too right yeah if you have the means um say you want to go on a week long hunting trip or fishing trip and you have the means to buy your mother-in-law a plane ticket yep and come out and hang out while you're gone that's a that's okay great way to go nates taking notes over there soon yeah dad yeah big notes yeah uh yeah if you have a question you want us to answer send your question to trivia at the meat eater dot com with the subject mailbag. All right, a little bit of housekeeping before today's show on August 13th at the Milwaukee Meadeter store. I'm going to be hosting trivia from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There's a grand prize of $1,000. Teams of up to four people can compete, but solo players are also welcome.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Spots are limited. If you want to play, go to the medeater.com slash events to sign up. Again, that's August 13th at the Milwaukee store. And then two days later, August. 15th at the Minneapolis meat eater store, me, Clay, Brent, and Tony will be there for a meet and greet for the grand opening. I will be shaking hands and kissing babies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We have gifts for the first 150 people and prizes that are given away every hour. That's August 15th at the Minneapolis store. For more information, go to the meat eater.com slash events. Today's episode is brought to you by Mountain Dew. And thanks to them, you are getting some extra trivia this week.
Starting point is 00:07:07 Between questions five and six, we'll have two bonus questions thanks to our friends at Mountain Dew. The Shelby Index for today is a four, so our winners should get eight correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win everything. How's that? Just tend to win everything. Question one, the topic is fishing.
Starting point is 00:07:40 This first great question is via Joseph Pate. and as always this will be multiple choice. This state is famous for America's biggest Jubilee, an annual event where thousands of bottom-dwelling sea creatures swarm into very shallow water. Is it Alaska, South Carolina, Hawaii, or Alabama? The room is stumped. I'll tell you where it ain't. This state is famous for America's biggest Jubilee, an annual state.
Starting point is 00:08:16 event where thousands of bottom dwelling sea creatures swarm into very shallow water. Your four states are Alaska, South Carolina, Hawaii, or Alabama. Nobody seems to know this one. We're going to have six guesses in the room. America's biggest Jubilee, an annual event where thousands of bottom dwelling sea creatures swarm into very shallow water. Alaska. South Carolina, Hawaii, Alabama. Is this for like a jubilee for a specific creature? We will talk about, I'll give you some examples after this,
Starting point is 00:08:56 but it's just sea creatures. Sea creatures is all I'm going to tell you right now. You're mermaids. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Alaska, Omar, Alabama, Randall, South Carolina, Corey, South Carolina. Corey, South Carolina, Nate, South Carolina, Marge, South Carolina.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Oh, very interesting. I just thought it sounded like a place where a Jubilee would happen. The correct answer is Alabama. Omar. That's the second Jubilee. That's a Jubilee. The Mobile Bay Jubilee happens every summer. It occurs due to a combination of hot weather, calm wind, heavy rain, and incoming tides
Starting point is 00:09:42 When those factors line, thousands of flounder eels, stingrays, blue crabs, and shrimp move into ankle-deep water. The vast majority do survive, but some are harvested by humans and other predators. The Mobile Bay Jubilee is second in size only to the Tokyo Bay Jubilee. I want that. Is that where Rural Tide comes from? Roll Tide, maybe. I like that thinking. We're looking at a photo now of some folks out gathering at a Jubilee.
Starting point is 00:10:11 I want that. And it is just what I described. That's how the picture looks. That looks like one of those photos of like a crawlfish boil. Yes. We have all this shit on the table. But that's just all live still. And I think they have multiple jubilees a year.
Starting point is 00:10:27 And I believe the first one just happened recently. So every year. You need to do something around that. I want to go down there. It's good stuff. Yeah. Cool. Question to the topic is wildlife.
Starting point is 00:10:36 The front, the four front chompers on a beaver are this type of seven. letter tooth. The four front chompers on a beaver are this type of seven letter tooth. Randall has his mojo back after getting question one wrong. He seems to have question two right. Yeah, I just figured Alabama was second on my list of jubilees. Again, second biggest in the whole world is the Mobile Bay Jubilee. So I think we should aim to go to the Tokyo Bay Jubilee. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. My understanding is that one is magnitudes larger. Oh, yeah. Love to hear that.
Starting point is 00:11:19 I didn't know what a Jubilee was two minutes ago, and now I'm planning my year around it. The four front chompers on a beaver are this type of seven-letter tooth. Corey, you got this one, right? Is that an earthquake pun? I don't think so. Earthquake pun, I wasn't going for one. Never mind.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Magnitudes. I almost said something too, Dave. I figured it would be a bad taste. Sorry. You joke about earthquakes. Is everybody ready? The four front chompers on a beaver are this type of seven-letter tooth. Spelling does not count.
Starting point is 00:11:50 Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says cutters. Omar, without an answer. Randall, incisor, Corey, incisor, Nate, incisor. Marge, without an answer, the correct answer is incisor. Oh, gosh, not going well. Incisors are only found in mammals. Most mammals have them, with some exclusions being manatees, ant-eaters,
Starting point is 00:12:12 and Baleen whales, the biggest incisors in the world belong to elephants, which grow them in the form of tusks. Question three, the topic is cooking. This next great question is via Mark Lott. The seven supposed types of snapping turtle meat are pork, shrimp, chicken, goat, beef, veal, and blank. What? Really digging in the bottom of the bag here, aren't we? Are you going to write any questions yourself? There are seven supposed types of snapping turtle meat.
Starting point is 00:12:48 I gave you six of them. You need to tell me what the seventh is. The seven supposed types of snapping turtle meat are pork, shrimp, chicken, goat, beef, veal, and blank. What was the Shelby index? Four on this one. I don't know if I understand this question. I don't get it. Yeah, nobody would be.
Starting point is 00:13:10 Just write down a type of meat. We just move on. A seventh type of protein is said to be on a snapping turtle. I've given you six of them. They say, well, this part is where you get the pork from. And this one's a shrimp. And this piece is the chicken. There's a seventh type of protein that you will supposedly find on a snapping turtle.
Starting point is 00:13:30 Pork, shrimp, chicken, goat, beef, veal, and blank. Oh. Interesting. I've had snapping turtle. I've butchered them, I've cooked them. You have to really use your imagination to find all seven types. Oh, really? On a stabbing, yeah, I think for the most part, you'd be like, yeah, I don't know, this is like kind of...
Starting point is 00:13:57 This is a trick question? Pork shrimp adjacent. It is not a trick question. It's not a trick question. So it's not going to be snapping turtle. The seventh type of meat isn't like seagull or something like that. Oh. I thought, yeah.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Dang. They changed my answer. Yeah. Is everybody ready? Hold on. No. I'm going to change my hand. The seven supposed types of snapping turtle meat are pork, shrimp, chicken, goat, beef, veal, and blank.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says fish, Omar, fish, Randall, fish, Corey Fish, Nate, Gator. Marge Venison. I almost put Gator. I just erased that.
Starting point is 00:14:48 The correct answer is fish. Ah, yeah. Of our six players got that one right. The yield off of a snapper is about 35%. So a 20-pound turtle
Starting point is 00:15:02 would produce seven pounds of boneless meat because the cleaning process is rigorous and snappers have long lifespans. It's recommended you don't keep ones smaller than 10 pounds. Coobie Brown describes it
Starting point is 00:15:14 as quote, along the lines of pork with a little bit of seafood edge. You can read his article on the meat eater.com called How to Catch Clean and Eat Snapping Turtle. Seth and I were just talking about our pet snappers. Hmm. Never ate them, though. Good thing Steve isn't here. He'd go on about how he used to catch snappers and sell them. Back in my day.
Starting point is 00:15:35 It had 20 minutes to this episode. Question for the topic is biology. A polydact. animal has extra blank. A polydactal animal has extra blank. Randall. I don't know what that is.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Already has his answer. Dr. Randall. Nate is joining him. Nate, do you have this one right? No. No? A polydactal animal has extra blank. Does anybody
Starting point is 00:16:16 eat and snapping turtle in here? No. some big ones though up at oh Lake of the woods Lake of the woods Grow Rock Rock Lodge Like you saw them
Starting point is 00:16:27 hanging out and shit Yeah they're swimming under the docks Man I love a snapping turtle One swam out behind the boats And it was It was a giant One of my favorite animals in the world They're cool
Starting point is 00:16:37 If I got to have a sports team Where I got to like create the mascot And it was in the appropriate place They'd be the snappers For sure Hmm Be unique no one else is doing A snapping turtle mascot
Starting point is 00:16:48 A polydactal animal has extra blank. Corey, you got this one right? No. Phil, would you get this one right? I don't think so. I think you would. If I have it right. I don't know if it's a hint.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Too much credit panel. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says, extra wings. Omar, eyes, Randall, toes, Corey, genitalia, Nate, arms, Marge, fingers. The correct answer is digits or fingers or toes. So you said fingers, toes.
Starting point is 00:17:32 We're not going to accept genitalia on this one, Corey. So Randall and Marge got that one right. The most common polydactal animals are domestic cats and dogs and laboratory mice. It also happens in farm animals such as pigs, sheep, horses, and cattle. And even rarer is when it happens in wild animals such as primates, guinea pigs, kangaroos, foxes, camels, and alligators. Polydactyl is a genetic mutation that is amplified by inbreeding. Yeah, there's a bunch of cats. Like six-toed cats.
Starting point is 00:18:04 In Key West. Hemingway's cats. Yeah, Hemingway's cats. That's what I thought Phil might know it from. All polydactyl. Dale Brisbane had a six-toed cat. That is a polydactyl critter. Question five, the topic is conservation.
Starting point is 00:18:19 This next great question is via Mark Hooper. How much does a duck stamp cost in 2026? Coming up on duck stamp purchasing season. How much does it cost in 2026? This is question five. We'll get a scoreboard update from Phil the Engineer after this, and then we have our Mountain Dew questions of the week. Exciting.
Starting point is 00:18:46 How much does a duck stamp cost in 2026? Has anybody purchased theirs yet? Yeah. No. Nope. I couldn't tell you how much it cost in 2025 either. Like a postage stamp? Not giving you any hints.
Starting point is 00:19:03 Marge. How much does a duck stamp cost in 2020? No. Before you got in the room, Marge, we were singing your praises for being the current champion Gibroni. Yeah. Thank you. I'm not doing so good.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Given your office mate up there, you should, I feel like you should know this. Yeah. It's Max Barta. He's raising a baby right now. Sure. You know, unfortunately, it doesn't come up in common conversation between the two us. Question five, how much does a duck stamp cost in 2026? Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:19:37 Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth, $25. Omar, $2.60. Randal 25, Corey, 25, Nate, 15, Marge, a buck 25. The correct answer is $25. erase that one there. Half of our players got that one right. The last time the duck stamp price changed was in 2014 under President Obama.
Starting point is 00:20:06 That year, the price jumped from $15 to $25, raising an additional $16 million for wildlife habitat. prior to that the price hadn't changed in 23 years the longest in duck stamp history so they changed the price about once a decade for a long time and now we're 12 years since the last price change we are due again for that increase with inflation that's doing less no Phil scoreboard update bring everybody down it is an actual yeah it's it's a stamp Marge that 98% of the funds generated from the duck stamp is earmarked for Habitat. Tell her about ding darling. Go for it, Randall.
Starting point is 00:20:50 Oh, he's the, why are we doing this now? I'm just joking. Phil, scoreboard. I'd love to. Here at halftime, we've got Nate and Maggie on the board with a single digit. One point. Seth and Omar have two, Corey has three, and right there at the Shelby Index is Dr. Randall with four points.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Boom. The train is back on the tracks. Yeah. Hey, there's a version of hunting where you just show up, you sit in a tree stand, you hope something happens, and then you go home. A lot of people hunt that way. And every once in a while, it'll work out.
Starting point is 00:21:25 Then there's the version where you've done the reading before the test. You've got the on-X hunt app with cameras integrated on your map, a tailored deer movement forecast to help you make the most of your days in the woods, and precise weather predictions. So when a buck starts showing up, you already know where he's coming from and where he's going. Most of us don't have unlimited days in the field.
Starting point is 00:21:48 We've got a week, maybe a little more. And every hunt that doesn't produce because you were in the wrong spot, that's a cost you can't get back. Build a real plan before opening day with the on-X hunt app because hope is not a strategy. Behind every night spent making the kids lunches,
Starting point is 00:22:06 there's a lot of suspense. Will they finally eat? the veggies. Will the pesto survive the first bite? Will the lunchbox come home empty, half full, or come home at all? And will you finish episode eight before you're done slicing the cucumbers? Get Bell Pure Fiber Internet with Craved Netflix and Disney Plus from $94 a month. Price guaranteed for two years on internet with a two-year term and auto pay credit. Visit bell.org.com for details and to check availability. Bell, connection is everything. Good Lord, they're finally here. At long last, after fighting and yelling and fighting some more,
Starting point is 00:22:40 Clay Newcomb and First Light have done it. They have built a pair of work bibs together. Not just any work bibs. We're talking the bare grease bibs from Clay. Now, I've watched Clay work long enough to know that he wasn't going to put his name on a pair of hunting pants, pretending to be work bibs, and boy, he did not. These are Clay's invention for things like breaking mules, rendering grease, kneeling in the dirt. I'm going to use them all the time.
Starting point is 00:23:06 Trapping, working, fixing stuff. It doesn't matter. If you want good, durable, comfortable bibs, these are your bibs made from tough stretch duck cotton. They got briar-proof chaps that run from cuff to thigh. They got pockets damn near everywhere. Again, comfortable and durable. Put them on.
Starting point is 00:23:25 You don't need to worry about having anything go bad. If it wasn't so hot right now outside, I'd be wearing them right now. But you can bet your ass I got them in my truck. and they are up at the meat eater store right now at the meat eater's store.com. And now it's time for the Mountain Dew questions of the week. Thanks to Mountain Dew. You get some bonus trivia in this week's episode. This does not count towards your scores just for bragging rights.
Starting point is 00:23:50 Here they are. The first question is conservation. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Mountain Dew were both created in what decade? Is it the 1920s, the 1930s? The 1930s, the 1940s, or 1950s. I usually skip over those. These don't count. It does not count towards your score.
Starting point is 00:24:11 Here's the thing. I can't put that up there because the answer was up there. I saw it. I was just going to ask. I was like, perfect. This was a dead giveaway. The US Fish and Wildlife Service and Mountain Dew were both created in what decade? 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1940s, or 1950s?
Starting point is 00:24:32 Was the answer in the Mountain Dew logo? Okay. Oh, oh, I'm on the can. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Set says the 40s, Omar 40s, Randall 40s, Corey, 48. Exactly, 48. Nate 40s. Tasting great since 48.
Starting point is 00:24:53 Yeah, everyone got it. The correct answer is the 1940s. Well done, room. You found the context clues of just the straight. up answer on the canon logo. All right, here's the second one. This is the Mountain Dew Mountain Man question. This two-time Oscar winner portrayed Jeremiah Johnson in the 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson.
Starting point is 00:25:17 Brought to you by Mountain Dew established in 1948. I don't think that one's on the can this time. That would be weird. This two-time Oscar winner portrayed Jeremiah Johnson in the 1972 film Jeremiah Johnson. Phil, I bet you'd get this one, right? I would. Okay. Does Mountain Dew say,
Starting point is 00:25:36 don't know about Henningway's cats? Do the Dew or is it different? No, it's tasting great since 48. Oh, okay. Since 48. Is everybody ready for who played Jeremiah Johnson? Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth, Robert Redford,
Starting point is 00:25:49 Omar, Clint Eastwood, Randall, Robert Redford. Omar hasn't worked here long. Corey, Bob Redford, Nate. Well, Marge. The thing is,
Starting point is 00:25:57 I have worked here longer than all of you. Yeah. You know what? I think Clint Eastwood is maybe considered for them. the role. And it would have been, you know, much different film of that answer. The correct
Starting point is 00:26:07 answer was Robert West. Don't tell Steve that you didn't know that. Those were the Mountain Dew questions of the week. Enjoy the refreshing citrus kick of Mountain Dew, an American original tasting great since 48. Question six. The topic is hunting.
Starting point is 00:26:23 This is our listener question of the week, which was won by Alexi Horner for sending this great question. Alexi is going to get a $150 first-like gift card. If you want chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at the medeeder.com. A family member of this gun brand built the San Jose Mansion with a bizarre layout that features staircases leading to ceilings and doors that open to blank walls.
Starting point is 00:26:53 A family member of this gun brand. I know this. Built the San Jose Mansion with a bizarre layout that features staircases leading to ceilings and doors that opened to blank walls, Marge and Randall. Have you been there? San Jose, California? I want to go there. Sydney's been there.
Starting point is 00:27:12 San Jose, California. That's right, Omar. Do you have this one right, Omar? No. He doesn't have an answer. Randall was too fast hiding his answer. His answer is not on the cans either. Come on.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Do you know this? Nope. I've heard it and I can't place it. Phil the engineer, would you get this one right? I would, yeah. Mostly just because it's a weird house. Oh, not because I know anything about the gun brand. And you're into the paranormal.
Starting point is 00:27:44 Mm, yes. By into it, you mean I'm incredibly skeptical, but it tickles me. Then yes. A family member of this gun brand built the San Jose Mansion with a bizarre layout that features staircases leading to ceilings and doors that open to blank walls. and we've got some pictures to look at of the mansion after I read the answer.
Starting point is 00:28:06 It's a good podcast about this. I was allegedly born in San Jose, California. Allegedly. Is that what your birth certificate says? That's what it actually says. Oh, good. Okay. But I don't want to believe it.
Starting point is 00:28:21 Okay. Where do you think you were born? I don't know. Washington be cool. Okay. That's just what you feel like in your heart. Yeah. Okay.
Starting point is 00:28:29 Is everybody ready? I'm changing it Go ahead and reveal your answer Seth says Remington Omar Winchester Randall Winchester Cory Browning Nate
Starting point is 00:28:44 Smith & Wesson Marge Winchester The correct answer is Winchester The Winchester The Winchester Mystery House Was built by Sarah Winchester The Widow of William Winchester Who served as president of the company
Starting point is 00:29:00 Sarah spent the final 38 years of her life building the mansion with construction stopping in 1922. The Gothic style building has 24,000 square feet, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 160 rooms, and 47 stairways. The building is filled with architectural curiosities like doors that open to multi-story drops or windows on the floor. Sarah also had an obsession with the number 13, which is featured throughout the house, according to author Susie Smith, Sarah thought she was being haunted by the ghosts of people killed by Winchester guns and a medium told Sarah that she needed
Starting point is 00:29:39 to build a house for the spirits. So here we are looking at some of the photos and the weirdness that exists in this mansion. There's the door to nowhere. You walk out that and you'll fall right off the roof of the building. There's some stairways that appear to just be built on top of each other. It looks like a safety hazard. Yes. I don't know if OSHA would be cool with that. Is that Susie Smith? Is that the book that came out like 10 years ago?
Starting point is 00:30:05 I don't know when that book was written. But yes, Susie Smith. What's the title of it? I don't have that in front of me here. And Randall, in his answer, had Sarah Winchester. He knew the widow Winchester who built that mansion. There's a book about Winchester and sort of the mid-century growth of the arms business. And it began with a long, opening chapter about Sarah Winchester in the house. I think Susie was maybe just covering the house and Minnesota. I'm guessing that's not the same book. Question seven. The topic is woodsmanship. This seven letter North American Desert is considered the wettest desert in the world. This seven letter North American Desert is considered the wettest desert in the world.
Starting point is 00:30:59 Randall, do you have this one right? I have a seven letter desert, Spencer. He's keeping the perfect game for question two through seven going then. Yeah, that first one really, the Jubilee, which is tough because I thought that was a fun question. We do need to go experience it. The problem is I don't think you know when it's going to happen until it just like happens. So we couldn't really like. We should, we'd have to be on standby.
Starting point is 00:31:27 We'd have to have a PJ lined up. I was literally thinking PJ right now. Yeah. I barely fly commercial anymore. again question seven topic is woodsmanship this seven letter north american desert is considered the wettest desert in the world or we could just go live in alabama for here when we were talking about a polydactal animal with extra digits um my youngest son has a bifid uvula i don't know if you know what that is it's basically like a uvula but there's too little
Starting point is 00:32:03 like to be crass it just looks like a scrotum is hanging in the back of his throat. Got like two little balls back there. Is that just an aesthetics thing? Or does it like have some impact on his breathing? Just like a weird, a weird abnormality. When I see him next, I'm going to lip him like a bass and check that thing out. Just don't grab the wrong child.
Starting point is 00:32:24 See if I taught him about stranger danger. Seven letter, North American Desert is the wettest desert in the world. Omar, you got this one right? I don't think so, but I'm going to give a sure. Corey, you got this one right. I got six letters, but I hope I spelled it wrong. Okay, that's the attitude. Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:32:45 Good chance. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth, without an answer, Omar. Damn it. Sonoran, Randall, Sonoran, Cori, Mojave, Nate. Without an answer, Marge without an answer. The correct answer is the Sonoran Desert.
Starting point is 00:33:00 God, I didn't tell you. But Sonora, and it didn't have seven, so I just erased it. The Sonoran Desert. encompasses about 100,000 square miles across Arizona, California, and Mexico. The desert is unique in that it has two wet seasons that run from December to March and July to September. This is because it's at a crossroads where it gets winter storms from the Pacific Ocean
Starting point is 00:33:24 and summer monsoons from the Gulf of California. Randall and I have spent some time in that desert together. Oh, man, I can't wait to go back. Doing what? Can you guys still taste of Reholes? Yes. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. You were looking for the coups.
Starting point is 00:33:37 That never leaves you. Would that be in the Sonoran? Yeah. Yeah. Round to question eight. The topic is conservation. Yeah. Makes sense.
Starting point is 00:33:47 Central American. Julia Roberts stars in this 2000 legal drama about a twice-divorced single mom who uncovers that a utility company is poisoning the town's water supply. Randall and Corey, quick to answer this one. Julia Roberts stars in this 2000 legal drama about a twice-divorced single mom who uncovers that a utility company is poisoning the town's water supply.
Starting point is 00:34:17 Phil, have you seen this movie? Yeah, I want to say more about it, but it might give it away. Okay, you give us a review of this movie after the fire test. I haven't seen it. She's back in the news. Oh. Oh, I'm not aware.
Starting point is 00:34:32 About what? For good or bad? The sequel? It's just getting after it. Okay. Dude, I just listened to a podcast. Doing her thing. Nate, do you have this one right?
Starting point is 00:34:42 No, I just listened to a podcast, this lady. I can't remember the name. Two movie questions. I'm really striking out to them. What was the other one? Good thing, Brody's now. Jeremiah Jones. That was a bonus.
Starting point is 00:34:52 Yeah, my bad. That was a mountain man question. Under the mountain man category. Do you so bad at these questions? I do bad. It's for me on Fridays because there's so much way on my break. Mm-hmm. I'm just going to say, I don't really.
Starting point is 00:35:05 watch movies that much. I like this Friday afternoon thing because I think, I don't know if Brody's conflict is ongoing, but I'd like to keep doing this. Yeah, you would. At this time. I like this because we're going to go drink some bushlights after this. Oh. Yeah, a real Friday.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Oh. Yeah. Randall got a twinkle in his eye when you heard that. Julia Roberts stars in this 2000 legal drama about a twice-divorced single mom who uncovers that a utility company is poisoning the town's water supply. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answers, Seth and Omar, without answers, Randall. Aaron Brockovich, Corey, Aaron Brockovich, Nate, Spotlight Marge without an answer.
Starting point is 00:35:49 The correct answer is Aaron Brockovich. She was just on Sean Ryan. Aaron Brockovich is a real person and her legal case is a real story. In 1993, she discovered that Pacific Gas and Electric Company was polluted. the groundwater around Hinkley, California. Brockovich had the realization after locals were experiencing a high rate of cancer, tumors, respiratory issues, and miscarriages. The lawsuit ended with a $333 million settlement, the largest at that time in U.S. history.
Starting point is 00:36:24 The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing a quarter billion dollars in getting five Oscar nominations. Phil, what do we think of Aaron Brockovich? You know, I don't have a lot to say about Aaron Brockovich, to be honest, but I just wanted to say that Steven Soderberg, who directed this movie is, I think, just like a criminally underrated director these days. He's super prolific. He's put out a movie almost every year for the last 10 years, and they're all pretty good.
Starting point is 00:36:47 But he put this movie came out the same year as Traffic, which is another one of his best movies. And the guy just goes on, like, then like, Cincinnati movie. Six months later, Ocean's 11 came out. Like, the guy's just, he was on a heater. Prolific. He was great. Corey, have you seen this movie? You got the question right.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Nope. Never seen it. Okay. Really? just knows his pop culture. I know stuff, Seth. Randall, any review? I haven't seen it.
Starting point is 00:37:10 I haven't seen it. How do you guys? Julia Roberts. Spencer just said us. I mean, she's still, like, she's timeless. An activist. She's still, like, it wasn't like a one,
Starting point is 00:37:22 the real Aaron Brockavich. Yeah. She's doing data centers right now. She's all over. Yeah, that's, I've seen her in the headlines lately for working on data center issues, but I also just remember when this came out thinking, like, interesting to have a movie named after someone I've never heard of.
Starting point is 00:37:39 You know, it's one thing to name your movie Jeremiah Johnson or, uh, or, uh, Jay Edgar Hoover or something, but Aaron Brockovich, I just thought it's like a name that you never heard of. Yeah. So a real person. And then I feel like it's like what's eating Gilbert Grape. I don't even know who Gilbert Grape is. It almost became like a cliche after this to like have a TV shows or movies to be, you know,
Starting point is 00:38:00 have like the divorced single mom who's, like, you know, doing it all. Kicking it ass. Yeah. And I feel like this was maybe like the start of that, I don't know, era. All right, Phil, we have two questions left. Give us a scoreboard update. Randall's locked it up.
Starting point is 00:38:18 My goodness. He's got seven points in the lead. And the two players that are closest to him are Omar and Corey with four points. Wow. See if you can lap them. Question nine, the topic is gear. This next great question is, via Sean Doherty.
Starting point is 00:38:35 Vibram calls themselves, quote, the world leader in the development and manufacturing of high-performance rubber, blank, for outdoor and leisure activities. Confident room, Omar, Nate, Randall, already have their whiteboards down. Vibram calls themselves the world leader in the development and manufacturing
Starting point is 00:38:59 of high-performance rubber, blank, for outdoor and leisure activities. Air 670-1 compliant. Okay. What does that mean? There'll be three dudes who know what I'm talking about. Hell yeah, brother. That's code. Okay.
Starting point is 00:39:16 That's code. That's code. Someday we'll dig up the body of a meat eater movie club and then we'll have to do Aaron Brokavitch if you've never seen it before, Randall. Yeah, that's a great idea. Aaron Eckhart's in that movie. Bring back Aaron Eckhart. Really? Big timber local. This must have been before thank you for smoking. smoking. It was. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:39:36 That's a great flick. Also about litigation. Yeah. I don't know of this. Vibram calls themselves the world leader in the development and manufacturing of high performance rubber blank for outdoor and leisure activities. Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:39:52 Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Soles. Omar Soles. Randall Souls. Corey Boot slash Souls. Yeah, I didn't know exactly what all you were looking Nate, souls, Marge, souls, and she drew us a nice hiking boot. The correct answer is souls.
Starting point is 00:40:13 Vibrum souls are used by Rocky, Red Wings, Merrill, Danner, Crispy, and more. The company was founded in Italy in 1937 by a man who lost six friends to a mountaineering accident that was partly blamed on inadequate footwear. Wow. All right, here's a correct answer review so far. one was Alabama, two, incisor, three, fish is the seventh type of snapping turtle meat, four, fingers or toes, five is $25, six, Winchester, seven, Sonoran, eight, Aaron Brockovich, nine, Rubber Souls, Phil, scoreboard update.
Starting point is 00:40:52 It's a good Beatles album. I guess Randall didn't have it totally locked up the last time. If he biffed the last three questions, then Omar, Seth, or Corey could have caught up. but now he has locked it up so got Randall in first place with eight points he had it locked up there were only two questions left oh okay and he was at three three point I thought there were three questions left
Starting point is 00:41:11 Randall's at eight we do this at eight questions doesn't matter Randall wins yay we have one question left question ten you win yeah he still win he won't see how badly you can win this is all losing a lot of momentum question 10 the topic is wild life
Starting point is 00:41:27 we're all really excited thanks the cartwheel display Bald Eagles do known as the blank spiral is where two birds interlock their talons and free fall towards the earth. So sick.
Starting point is 00:41:42 And we have a video to watch after this of the blank spiral. The cartwheel display bald eagles do known as the blank spiral is where two birds interlock their talons and
Starting point is 00:41:58 free fall towards the earth. Wow, wonderful. That was great. Very good. Very impressive. Did you see that kid who went viral a couple weeks ago with those bird calls? Yeah, I want to take that dude turkey on. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:42:11 So bad. Got a lot of DMs from people suggesting we get in touch with that. It would have been a great radio live segment. Oh, man. RIP. Bring it back. R-I-P-R-L. God, I miss it so much.
Starting point is 00:42:29 The cartwheel display ball to use. know as the blank spiral is where two birds interlock their talons and free fall towards the earth. I do. I seriously do. I love radio live. Thursdays just aren't the same. Is everybody ready? I feel like I lost my purpose. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says death. Omar, death. Randall mating. Corey, death. Nate, death. Marge. Love. The correct answer is death. Nate and Corey and Omar and Seth get that one right. The death spiral is a courtship display done by potential mates and lifelong mates.
Starting point is 00:43:16 The birds will reach a high altitude, then lock their talons and cartwheeled downward, letting go to soar away just before hitting the ground. It's thought to be a test between the two Eagles, with some established pairs doing it every few years to reaffirm their, relationship. Here is a video of what that looks like shown with permission from TM Maddox photography. It looks fake. Wow. Yeah. Yeah. I got you. The music is sick. Cirque to Salé could never. Yeah. And this is to determine if they're good mates or not. You'll see some of them where they actually hit the water. Like they let go just at the last second and then they actually crash into
Starting point is 00:44:07 the water. This one, the bald eagle soared away though. When you're skiing, you can do that with your ski poles with somebody going down the mountain. Oh. And it also feels like that's spiral. Okay. Or a love spiral. Yeah. Yeah. Sad to go with your mate into a death situation. Randall is today's winner. He got eight correct answers right on the showy index. Had I gotten that last one right, I would have said, I wish Brody had been here because I think I still would have won. But after getting the last question wrong, I think it would have been a last second collapse. Oh, you'd have done a death spiral. Just like last time.
Starting point is 00:44:42 Yeah. Oh, okay. Let's send this money to captains for clean water. Okay. What are they got going on these days? Just a group of, like, charter captains, guides that are out on the water every day and they know what's affecting our fisheries. We were just up in, when we were up in Lake of the Woods, that was one of the groups that we were chatting about. they do a lot of good work and I hadn't thought of them lately so let's send this money their way
Starting point is 00:45:09 $500 going to captains join us next week for more meat eater trivia the only game show where conservation always wins thanks Spencer yeah spencer from south Dakota he's the host using those smooth mellow tones he lays them questions down and he likes taking those two and three year old bucks and he's an avid amateur This is an I-Heart podcast.
