Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show,
where conservation always wins.
There is a prize.
Meadeter will donate $500 to the conservation organization of the winners choosing.
I'm your host, Spencer Newarth, and today we're joined by Clay, Brent, Bear, Mark, Maggie, and Tony.
This is a 10-round quiz show with questions from meat eaters for verticals, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking.
Mead Deeder trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light, Head for the Mountains.
All right, we have a mailbag question to start today's show.
If you have a question, you want the crew to answer, then send your question to mailbag.
Excuse me with the subject line mail bag to the address trivia at the meat eater.com. This is from Kevin in British Columbia. He says, have you ever had to break up with a hunting partner? And if so, how did you approach the matter? Anybody ever had to break up with a hunting partner?
I had to break up with a fishing partner one. Oh, okay. How did that go? Because Kevin wants to know how to approach the matter.
So I had found a lake that had really big large mouth.
in the suburbs of the cities.
And it looked like a frog pond.
So it didn't look very good, but it was a,
it was a lake you could go flip and catch big, big fish.
And I told my neighbor about it, who I fished with a lot.
And then I showed up at the lake one day,
and two of his buddies were fishing it.
And it was a little lake.
And I was like, he's talking.
And so we had a little conversation about it
and we didn't fish together anymore.
Okay.
Is he the neighbor who owns property that you hunt?
No.
No, okay.
But then it was an easy breakup.
Right.
It wasn't, no strings attached at that point.
I think the answer is you don't necessarily always have to directly confront the situation.
You just become less and less available.
Okay.
You call them less and less, ghost them a little bit more and more.
And it's a very indirect.
I'm all about saying, hey, pal, this is the reason.
And for what you did and for that reason, I'm out.
Good for you.
That's a tough conversation.
Ripping a Band-Aid off.
But maybe it's never that big of it.
deal like it's it's like you know you just kind of you just kind of went in different directions
yeah i'd be interested in what the exact reason is yeah if it was an egregious thing like somebody
yeah breaking the law or spot stealing my screening criteria is just very very high i'm very
paranoid about ever starting a new hunting partnership like we've got a funny situation a buddy in
mine jokes still to this day like there was a buddy i was going to go on an elk hunt with he said yeah
I'd love to go.
But last time I went, I brought my buddy Andy.
And I always told him if I ever went again, I'm going to invite him to.
He's like, is that cool?
I'm like, I don't know.
No, I don't know the guy.
I'm not sure I want to commit my 10 days to being with some guy.
I don't know out there in the mountains.
So we had to set up like a meet and greet, like a blind date kind of deal.
We got to kind of hang out and talk and figure, feel each other out.
Did you bring him?
We brought him.
And he's one of my best buddies now.
No, right.
hunting partner. So I think that careful screening take a little time ahead of time, a vetting
process. He was vetting you, Mark. You just didn't know it. You're probably right.
So I honestly that guy's got lost in. I have a really good hunting partner that for a while
we sort of had a falling out because he's one of those perpetually late people. And I finally, I,
that drives me. That's not cool. No. And it drives me nuts. And finally I was like, I, I hunted and
fished with him a lot. And I was like, I'm going to just start leaving you. And I started leaving him.
And then he started.
She started showing up.
So, and we're still great friends to this day, but we had a little rocky patch in there.
Success story.
Maggie, any advice for Kevin from British Columbia?
Well, you guys are talking about like bro breakups.
I'm thinking about like actual like relationship breakups.
I have not had one of those.
I did though.
My current sweetheart, I was a little worried about getting in a relationship with him because we were fishing buddies to begin with.
And I didn't want to lose a good fishing buddy if things went south.
But I just want to be friends.
And now you live together.
And now we live together.
You want a home with your old fishing buddy.
Yep, we got a house.
We got a pile of dogs.
Things are good.
Is the fishing still good?
Fishin's good.
All right.
That's all that matters.
We have a couple events in person to tell you about August 13th at the Milwaukee
Media Store.
I am hosting trivia at the store from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
There's a grand prize of $1,000 that day as a gift card.
Teams of up to four people can compete, but solo players are welcome as well.
Spots are limited, and you need to sign up.
If you want to play, go to the medeater.com slash events to register.
And then on August 15th at the Minneapolis Meadeeater store,
me, Clay, Brent, and Tony will be there for the grand opening.
We'll be shaking hands and kissing babies from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
We have gifts for the first 150 people and prizes that are given out every hour.
Again, that's Meadeter trivia at the Milwaukee store on August 13th and a meet and greet with me, Clay, Brent, and Tony at the Minneapolis store on August 15th.
We're excited to see you out there.
For more information, go to the meed eater.com slash events.
We'll be there.
Brent and Clay, it takes real hard to drag them that far north.
We got it.
They're going to be at the Minneapolis store.
Wisconsin store opening.
And that was a riot.
I mean,
there was a lot of people.
It was,
I'm looking forward to it.
I think it's going to be fun.
Yeah.
They said, man,
you can invite,
give us a list of people
you can,
and you want to invite
to the meet,
greet.
I don't know anybody
that lives that far north.
Besides Tony.
Tony.
Tony's going to be.
Tony.
And I appreciate that,
man.
Yeah, you're welcome to come.
I'm looking forward.
I'm looking forward to it.
It'll be right outside
Tony's front door.
If you miss me at the
meet and greet,
I'm going to go to the Twins game
that night.
It's $2 beers.
You can meet me and greet me there.
But I don't think these.
Brent and Claire are getting up playing.
Like accompanying something fun onto a trip.
The whole trip is fun, though.
I can't complexify my life that much.
What times a gang star?
I think 6.10 p.m.
The $2 beers are before first pitch.
That's Friday night?
That's no, Saturday night.
Oh, yeah, I'm going home.
Brent just learned that he's going to be there.
I did.
Where are we going again?
All right, the Shelby Index for today is a four, so our winner should get eight correct answers.
And with that, we're on to the game of trivia.
Play the drop, Phil.
Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Everything.
How's that?
Just tend to win everything.
Suckers!
Question one, the topic is fishing.
This first great question is via Brett Clement, and as always, it will be multiple choice.
Which of these states has the most miles?
of coastline.
Is it Louisiana, Oregon, New York,
or Georgia?
Which of those four states has the most miles
of coastline?
Louisiana, Oregon, New York,
Georgia.
The bear grease boys are in their
bare grease bibs. It's the only outfit
they brought this week, I think.
Clay's got his poker glasses on.
It seems like a trick.
It sure does.
Which of these
States has the most miles of coastline
four choices Louisiana
Oregon, New York, Georgia
changing my answer
I don't like my answer
Room is not confident
I don't either but I think we're going the same way
I don't think I saw any answers
till the second time I repeated it
It's usually the second
Hmm
there's one that you're like oh it's that one
But it's usually this
Okay
It's usually not that one
Louisiana, Oregon, New York, Georgia.
Is everybody ready?
Maggie's changing her answer.
Keep it, Max. Keep it.
I think it sucks.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We have Mark Kenyon saying, Louisiana, Tony, New York, Bear, Georgia, Maggie, New York, Clay, New York, Brent, Georgia.
The correct answer is Louisiana.
Oh, that was one out.
Just Mark Kenyon.
Really?
That's what I was going to switch to.
I was just thinking about that job, Mark.
Well, don't trust me, Mags.
According to Noah, Louisiana has the third most coastline in the United States after Alaska and Florida.
New York is 13th.
Georgia is 14th and Oregon is 17th.
So Louisiana number three.
I had Louisiana to begin with.
Wow.
Question two.
The topic is wildlife.
Jimothy, which is this type of animal, was declared a, quote, national celebrity by the New York Times and internet superstar by the Washington Post in July 2026.
This may be a 100% here. The room looks confident.
Jimothy, which is this type of animal, was declared a national celebrity by the New York Times and internet superstar by the Washington Post in July 26.
As internet superstars go these days, this one's not too bad.
You're okay with Jimithy having viral fame.
I'll follow him before I'm surprised we haven't hired him yet.
We've tried to track down his agent.
How many subs does he have on YouTube?
Wait till y'all see Waylon and Jimothy, the video that Brent made.
What?
Waylon and Jimothy?
That's Brent.
Like your dog?
Hunting dog.
It's okay.
In air quotes.
Is everybody.
ready. What kind of animal
is Jimothy? Go ahead and reveal
your answers. The whole room
says raccoon. The whole room
got it right. Jimothy
is a raccoon.
Jimothy the raccoon lives in a Seattle
neighborhood. He has an unusual
shape. That's the result of a spinal
deformity. Although locals have
known about him since last summer,
it wasn't until last month when he went
viral. Just like Steve Ronella,
Jimothy has an honorary doctorate
degree from the University of Washington.
He's also on Morocco blank screen.
Just like Steve Runell.
Also like Steve Ronell.
There is a picture of Jimothy sitting very awkwardly on a fence.
Question three, the topic is cooking.
This next great question is via Kerry Martin.
This word is defined as, quote,
to roll a moist food in a dry ingredient such as flour or breadcrumbs
and also refers to a machine that removes silt from,
bodies of water.
Tony Peterson coming up with an answer
and then five blank whiteboards
in the room. This word is defined as
to roll a moist food
in a dry ingredient such as
as flour or breadcrumbs
and also refers to a machine
that removes silt from
bodies of water.
Does anybody know this?
Mark Kenyon just came up with an answer
Maggie now writing down her answer.
It's such a good feeling, Clay,
when you don't have it and then all of a sudden,
on you, that little light ball flips on.
Have you ever read that?
Never.
Brett started to write something.
Oh, I got something.
Okay, he did finish.
The second part threw me for a minute, but then it was, ah, okay.
This word is defined as to roll a moist food
in a dry ingredient, such as flour or breadcrumbs,
and also refers to a machine that removes silt
from bodies of water.
I'm just trying to picture the cooking terms on here,
As if my grandmother would use them.
Okay.
I think your grandmother, she might have this in her, in her vocabulary.
You probably call it something else in the South.
Based on what?
I don't know.
You don't know.
Here's the other thing to think about, Clay, when you get a word, and I'm sure this has happened,
what's happened to me a lot, maybe some of you, you take a word that you use all the time,
and then you start thinking about it more, and then you start wondering, is that actually a word?
Is this a real, where do this come from?
Am I thinking about the right, the right,
way. So now I'm having second thoughts
about my word because I'm thinking, okay,
did that just come out of nowhere or is that
really what this thing is? And I'm second
guessing everything. So do you have this one right
Mark? 75%
yes. Okay. Bear Newcomb, do you have this one?
Absolutely not. Okay.
Is everybody ready?
Go ahead and reveal
your answers. Mark Canyon
says dredge, Tony, dredge. Bear
without an answer.
Maggie, dredging, clay,
breadering,
Brent,
batter,
the correct answer
is dredge.
Oh,
okay,
okay,
yeah.
According to Cooks
Illustrated,
dredging and battering
are two different
culinary techniques.
Dredging is rolling
a wet ingredient
such as a fish fillet
in a dry ingredient
such as flour.
Battering is when
the fish filet is placed
in a wet breading
like a beer batter
they say dredging
makes a crispier crust
while battering makes
a thicker crust.
Yeah.
Brent, would your grandma use the word dredge?
She would.
Okay.
Yeah, I've heard that.
I don't know why I put that, I guess, because of that injury, the hit injury.
Yeah.
That was tough on you.
It was this morning.
Question four, the topic is public lands.
Going to the Sun Road, which Atlas Obscura calls, quote,
the loveliest mountain road in North America is located in this national park.
Going to the Sun Road, which Atlas Obscura calls the loveliest mountain road in North America is located in this national park.
The room is confident.
Has anyone drove on this road?
I have.
Okay.
Bear, you have.
Oh, Bear didn't know the answer.
Did you know the answer, Bear?
No.
Oh, okay.
Can you help him out any more, Clay?
Was he behind the wheel?
Well, you were with your mother.
And I wasn't there.
All the clues.
You know what?
I wasn't there because I was at a...
Hang on.
You're going to...
I don't...
Dad, how you spell it?
I don't really think there's a chance that either of us are going to win.
So if we do win and somehow we've cheated...
I've only got two wrong so far.
You've got to get eight to win, right?
We'll see.
You got to get the most.
We'll get a scoreboard update and a couple questions here.
I wish my dad worked here.
going to the Sun Road, which Atlas Obscure calls the loveliest mountain road in North America
is located in this national park.
Bear, do you have this one right?
50%.
So you got to answer after I said that.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
We're going to have to give it to Tony.
No idea.
Mark says Glacier.
Tony says, Bear's ear.
Bear, Glacier, Maggie, Glacier, Glacier, Clay.
Glacier, Brent, Smoky Mountains, the correct answer is Glacier National Park.
Never been there.
Going to the Sun Road is a 51 mile out that crosses the continental divide in northern Montana.
Only vehicles less than 21 feet long and eight feet wide are allowed on the pass.
The road is known for its stunning mountain views, but also its narrow lanes, dramatic switchbacks,
and breathtaking cliffs.
Two motorists have died on going to the Sun Road in the last.
last seven years due to rock falls that crushed their vehicle. It was a picture of what that 51
mile stretch of road looks like. I just drove up at this last weekend for the second time. So the first time
I went up there, I was 10 years old, family trip. And I remember riding up there. My mom driving
and everybody was kind of paralyzed. We got to the top. I think it would have been Logan's Pass. Logan's
past is the highest part. And we set out on the hike, my family and a couple extended family members
and come around this kind of bend
and there's a guy's,
there's a grizzly bear up ahead.
And as soon as I heard
there was a grizzly bear,
I started running towards it
because I wanted to go see the grizzly bear.
My mom was back behind me,
like yelling at me to not go running off.
But I ran off, way ahead of him,
came around a curve,
and right in the middle of the trail
is this huge animal.
Like for me to Brent.
Did he kill you?
But it was a mountain goat.
Oh.
It's a good constellation,
three mountain goats
right for me to you,
right?
I'm 10 years old, this close to a goat.
It was one of the coolest things my whole life.
But I do look back on that.
Like, what a dumb kid, sprinting towards the grizzly bear.
That's why they make leashes for kids.
Did you see the bear?
No, we never saw the bear.
If you're going to do the drive, and it makes you nauseous to be on the edge of the cliff,
then do the drive from east to west rather than west to east.
If you go west to east, you're driving the rim of the mountain the whole time.
If you're east to west, you get to tuck yourself up against the mountain wall instead of being exposed.
Question five, the topic is hunting.
This next great question is via Michael McNeely.
This month's full moon is known as the buck moon, which is when West Virginia
Division of Natural Resources says antlers can grow an inch a day.
So we're looking for what month that is.
This month, not like.
This month's full moon is known as the Buck Moon, which is when the West Virginia
division of natural resources
says antlers can grow
an inch a day. Looking
for a month. Mark Kenyon
quick to get his answer.
Maggie, do you have this one right?
I don't know.
Okay, that sounds like a
50%. Yeah, I'll give it that.
I'm always a little bit confused
about velvet
antler growth on white tails because when they say
it can grow an inch a day, does that mean each
point, each termination
point grows an inch?
Or does it put on, you know, like an eighth of an inch on a eight point and you get an inch?
Do you understand?
I understand what you're saying.
The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources did not specify where that inch is.
There's a big difference between.
I think it's the former.
No, that could, well, no, that could be wrong.
I was thinking.
They're not putting on an inch on every time every day.
No way.
Yeah.
But they could easily accrue 30 inches an antler score over a course of a month, right?
So that seems possible.
Okay, I got you.
This month's full moon.
I'm not 240 inches that month.
I don't know.
I don't know.
You all are, but.
The buck moon, which is when the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources says antlers can grow an inch a day.
Inch per day.
Is everybody ready?
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Mark says July.
Tony, July.
Bear, April.
Maggie, July.
Clay, July.
Brent, July.
The correct answer is July.
July, ringed it well.
July is the most dramatic month for deer growing antlers.
North American Deer Hunter Magazine says June is when a bucks rack establishes its framework.
July is when it has explosive growth.
And August is for the final touches.
Other names for the July full moon include the thunder moon, raspberry moon, and salmon moon.
Another quick little story about Velvet.
My mom and I were driving on the road a few weeks ago.
and there is a dead elk on the side of the road
that had some velvet on it.
And my mom was a science teacher for years.
And she said, I've never touched velvet on antlers before.
So we pulled over on the side of the road and got out
so we could rub the velvet on this dead elk's antlers.
And she was so excited.
I had no idea this is what it would be like.
She was so excited.
My mom's the coolest.
Good for Maggie's.
Hey, Spencer.
What's up?
Can we ask Bear if you thought we were talking about
turkey beers here.
We don't need to talk about it.
We do not need to talk about that last question.
Think about this though.
I mean, would, and I'm still
scrutinizing the question,
antlers would grow more than an inch.
Played the part of Brody today.
An inch of day for the whole month of day.
An inch a day.
Got it, got it, got it, got it.
Inch a day.
It's a day.
Not inch a month.
Phil Taylor.
We're halfway through the game of trivia.
Give us a scoreboard update.
Oh, here at halftime.
We've got Bear and Brent.
with two points.
Tony and Clay have three.
Maggie has four,
and he's pitching a heater.
Mark Kenning has a perfect game.
Wow.
Coming for you, Mark.
Way to go, Mark.
Thanks, buddy.
Hey, there's a version of hunting where you just show up,
you sit in a tree stand,
you hope something happens,
and then you go home.
A lot of people hunt that way.
And every once in a while,
it'll work out.
Then there's the version
where you've done the reading before the test.
You've got the on-X hunt app
with cameras,
integrated on your map, a tailored deer movement forecast to help you make the most of your days in
the woods and precise weather predictions. So when a buck starts showing up, you already know
where he's coming from and where he's going. Most of us don't have unlimited days in the field.
We've got a week, maybe a little more. And every hunt that doesn't produce because you were in the
wrong spot, that's a cost you can't get back. Build a real plan before opening day with the
on-X hunt app because hope is not a strategy.

Meat Eaters Elk Camp is live and if you're anything like me, this is the time of year you've been thinking about since the end of last elk season.
Elk camp isn't just another hunting trip.
It's the place where the planning stops.
The excuses disappear.
and you finally get to spend time in the mountains with the people who matter most.
Whether you punch a tag or not, those mornings around camp and those miles on the mountain are the things you remember.
That's why we pulled together the Elk Camp collection over at the Meat Eater store with the gear we actually reach for this time veer.
And while you're there, check out the limited edition Meat Eater Phelps Easy Estrus Cal Call.
It sounds sweet.
We only have a few, so when they're gone, they're gone.
Head over to themeatheaterstore.com to see the full Elkamp collection
and get geared up before the season gets here.
Question six, the topic is fishing.
The Illinois River and Wisconsin River are direct tributaries to this river.
The Illinois River and Wisconsin River are direct tributaries to this river.
This is question.
Six.
Tony Peterson, do you have this one right?
I don't know.
I hope so, though.
Mark Canyon, will this keep the perfect game going?
Yeah, it's a 50-50.
Time.
Every day I'm working on the Illinois River, get a half a day off with pay.
That's enough.
Old Tovo picking up barges on a long hike.
There you go.
He mentions a town in that song that I used to hunt by, so I loved that song.
Oh, spot burning you.
Yeah, but I don't have there anymore.
And it wasn't that good to begin with, so that spot can be burned.
The Illinois River and Wisconsin River are direct tributaries to this river.
Is everybody ready?
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Mark Kenyon says, the Mississippi, Tony, Mississippi, Bear, Arkansas, Maggie, Mississippi, Clay, Ohio, Brent, Mississippi.
The correct answer is the Mississippi?
River.
Half the room got that one right.
The Illinois River joins the Mississippi River 20 miles north of St. Louis.
And the Wisconsin River joins the Mississippi River 60 miles south of La Crosse.
They are the sixth and the eighth longest tributaries of the Mississippi.
Man, I just felt like Mississippi was just too obvious.
Too obvious.
It's right there for you.
Question seven.
The topic is conservation.
For us today.
Thanks, Spencer.
This is our listener.
Question of the week, which was won by Ali Spangler for sending this great question.
Ali is going to get a $150 first-like gift card.
If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at the meadeter.com.
The federal agency NRCS stands for natural, blank, blank, blank, blank.
The federal agency, NRCS stands for natural, blank, blank, blank, blank.
Mark Canyon, do you have this one right?
I do.
Maggie, are you going to get this one to keep pace?
Yeah, I should, but I'm kind of brain farting, so give me a second to think.
Clay Newcomb, he has now put his wife or down.
Do you have this one right?
You know, 70%.
Do you have any fun family stories that you might be able to relate to there?
About the time you guys went to the office together.
Do you remember the time that?
Tony, do you have this one right?
I don't, I don't know.
I'm not that confident in this one.
NRCS stands for natural blank, blank, blank.
I picked a lot of very likely words to match up with those letters.
I bet you got it.
We'll see.
Is everybody ready?
Maggie?
I don't know.
I don't think, I think I'm messing this up.
Maggie, you're a writer.
I know.
I have a problem with acronyms.
Oh, Maggie, wearing the tributer's hat.
Yeah.
Yeah, I just saw him this summer.
Maggie, are you ready?
I'm not, yeah.
Yes.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Mark says Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Tony, resource conservation service.
Barry, resource commissioning system.
Maggie, Resource Conservation Society.
Clay, resources, conservation society.
Oh.
Clay, Resources.
Conservation Service.
Brent, resource conservation service.
The correct answer is natural resources conservation service.
The room did well.
Do I get a half a point?
No.
The NRCS.
I didn't make my brain work.
The NRCS is part of the U.S. Department of Ag.
They are considered the primary private lands conservation agency.
The NRCS provides free technical advice.
Custom conservation plans and financial costs share assistance, they say their vision is a world with clean water, healthy soil, and thriving agriculture.
I did some research on some of that for a buddy of mine.
It's got a piece of property he's developing for a rest area for ducks.
There's a lot of good programs.
What did you learn?
Is he going to find something?
Yeah, he's applying for some of the stuff.
Very good.
Yeah, if you own private land, there's a lot of ways that they can help you achieve your goals while also getting a
assistance or cost sharing.
You know, it just takes a little quick free meeting with a specialist and you can
figure some things out.
And I think private land down to like pretty small acreages, uh, they, they do programs for.
Question eight, the topic is woodsmanship.
This 1959 children's adventure novel is about a 12 year old boy who runs away from
New York City to live on an abandoned farm in the Catskill Mountains.
How is this about woodmanship?
That one never made it down to the Arkansas reading list.
I ate a lot of pizzas from book club when I was in elementary school.
This one wasn't on there.
Okay.
This 1959 children's adventure novel is about a 12-year-old boy who runs away from New York City to live on an abandoned farm in the Catskill Mountains.
Tony, do you have this one right?
Look, I had something come to mind right away, but I have no idea.
Maggie, do you have this one right?
I had one that
it might be the obvious choice
but I wrote something else.
And our southern players
have blank whiteboards.
I'm gonna put something, but...
Mark Canyon, do you have this one right?
No, probably not.
Okay.
That was my first thought, Clay.
Oh, really?
If you get that...
If you get that one right,
I'm gonna be mad I didn't write that.
Question eight, we'll get a scoreboard update
after this.
This 1959 children's adventure novel
is about a 12-year-old boy
who runs away from New York City
to live on an abandoned farm
in the Catskill Mountains.
Mark can get this one wrong
and Tony and Maggie get this one right.
Have an interesting game, these last two questions.
Is everybody ready?
Hmm.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Mark says,
Hatchet.
The other side of the mountain.
Tony says Hatchet, bear without an answer.
Maggie says, my side of the mountain.
That's probably not the other side of the mountain.
The other side of the mountain.
The Brady Bunch.
The correct answer is
my side of the mountain.
Maggie. Go, Maggie. Got that one.
Good job, Maggie. I think you became the room's favorite here.
I read a lot of books as a kid. I was kind of a nerd.
But you knew what Hatchet actually is about, don't you?
Yeah.
You don't know what Hatchet is.
Is it a kid who gets a knife?
Tell us what it's about. Hatchett is like the best ever kid's survival book.
A kid is going to
visit his dad up in Canada on a little bush plane the bush plane goes down he has to survive on his
own on the edge of the lake iconic that's awesome former trivia answer about sign of the beaver
did you all read sign of the beaver yes that was a great you know like 12 13 year old boy
was reading my son that last year the book was written and illustrated by jean craghead george who also
penned two sequels to the novel it follows sam grible as he learns to hunt fish trap and
forage on his great-grandfather's
property, the book ends with Sam
concluding that life is about balancing
the desire to live among nature
while also being near the people
you love. All right, and Phil
has a picture of my side
of the mountain there, so our southern readers
can know what to look for
Oh, a Newberry Honor book.
All right, Phil, we have
two questions left. Give us a scoreboard
update.
I've had a pretty close game here now.
I'd be tied if I didn't mess up the NRC.
you ask questions.
Well, I'd be too ahead of you if I didn't say
other side instead of my side.
Bears got two,
Brent and Clay have put a couple
more points in their bucket. They've got four.
Tony's got five. Maggie now
has six, but Mark is still in
first place with seven points.
Question nine, the topic
is public land.
What color are state parks
on on X?
What color
are state parks on on X.
We'll find out who spends a good amount of time on on X here.
Yeah, but I'm looking at BLM and forest service.
Not a lot of scot.
Never look at state parks.
Some Malau hunting.
The topic is public lands, not hunting, though.
Tony, do you have this one right?
No.
I feel like I could go through all the agencies
and tell you what their colors are.
What color are state parks on on X?
I can tell you what colors they're not.
There's only so many colors.
That's kind of what I'm trying to.
Well, then just go through the process of elimination.
That's what I tried to do.
Go through every color for us, Mags.
What color are state parks?
You like this color.
I'm not changing my answer.
You have some onesies this color.
Probably a romper.
Oh, gosh.
That's the next in line, the bear grease romper.
Short shorts
Is everybody ready
Go ahead and reveal your answers

We have BLM is

National parks are
purple and Department of Defense
is pink.
Room did okay, but nobody got
state parks are blue. All right, here's a correct
answer review so far. One was Louisiana.
2, raccoon, 3, dredge, 4, Glacier National Park, 5, July, 6, Mississippi River, 7, natural resources, conservation service, 8, my side of the mountain, 9, blue, fill, scoreboard update.
The needle has remained in its spot. Everyone's got the same score. We got Mark 7, Maggie with 6.
Question 10, the topic is haunting. This 10 letter taxidermy word.
is defined as, quote, a cleaning method that uses warm water and bacteria to rot and dissolve flesh and fat off animal bones.
This 10-letter taxidermy word is defined as a cleaning method that uses warm water and bacteria to rot and dissolve flesh and fat off animal bones.
If Mark can get this right, he'll have secured the victory.
If he gets it wrong and Maggie gets it right, we will go to overtime.
Oh, wow.
Come on, Maggie.
Do you have to spell it right?
You do not have to spell it right.
Ten letter word.
Mark has a blank white board, but so does Maggie.
No, I'm totally brain farting right here.
Do you have this one right, Clay?
I think so.
But also, you know, thought those darn rivers flowed into the Ohio.
Ten-letter taxidermy word is defined as a cleaning method that uses one.
warm water and bacteria to rot and dissolve flesh and fat off animal bones.
That sounds like a stinky way to clean a skull.
It is.
Tony, do you have this one right?
I absolutely do not.
Okay.
I do have a 10-letter word, though.
Okay.
Be entertained by what it is.
I think I'm spelling my word wrong.
That's what's got me a little.
Well, I feel like I'm spelled it right, and it's not 10 letters, so that's why it's making me nervous.
but I've never been a good speller.
Well, let me count mine then.
Still 10 letters.
Maggie, how many 10 letters?
Words?
It's like two.
I probably got the wrong one.
Our southern boys think there's a chance
they have this one right.
No, I don't.
Mark?
How many exes are in this word?
They're silent.
I'm not going to give you any hints.
Maggie doing some furious writing.
It's not right.
Get it, Max.
Run out of time.
Bear, your mama gave you a spelling test one time and this word was on it.
Well, go ahead, help him out, Clay.
No, no, I got it.
I got it.
Bear should help out Clay then.
I had Bear move one of his bear skulls away from, like, where we live, because it smelled so bad.
You could, like, visitors could smell it.
Was it doing this?
I was like, hey, bro, that needs to be like a long ways away.
Is everybody ready?
It's going to be one of those things when we hear the word,
and we're all going to be like, ah.
Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Mark without an answer.
Tony says,
Boiling bear says maceration.
Maggie without an answer.
Clay says masticate.
Brent says submersive.
The correct answer is maceration.
Bear Nukem, got that one right.
Clay, you can give that to you, Clay.
Sure, you can have that point.
Only if Bear says it's okay, Bear, does he get that right for having?
Masticated.
I mean, it's a completely different word.
Oh, you're right.
That's not that.
You can't have that.
Yeah, okay.
Clay does not get it.
Just bear.
Maceration is also used to make oil, syrup, gin, wine, and more for cleaning animal bones.
It's recommended to keep the water,
90 and 100 degrees, which you can achieve with an aquarium heater.
It takes two to four weeks to clean a skinned skull,
but you need to change the water every few days.
Is maceration what you do, Bear?
For the most part, yeah.
And I can tell you, the only reason I knew that
is because I've had two separate, probably eight minute long conversations
with Janus about his maceration process.
Yanni is passionate about this,
and I think he's learned.
Some hot tip about like dog crap helps the maceration process.
Yeah, he did.
Had that conversation twice.
Maybe I'm revealing some insider secrets there of Yannis,
but people try to add things to the maceration process.
And that's one thing that Yanni has heard.
I don't know if he's done it firsthand, but dog crap.
How long does it take?
Two to four weeks.
And it just, you take a skull and it's just completely clean.
I mean, you know, you kind of got a, it helps to clean it up.
just a little bit, but you like shake the meat off.
Imagine like cooking a chicken in a crock pot for, you know, eight hours and you kind of
just shake it and the meat falls off.
I mean, I've made the mistake of like aging a skull a little too long before boiling it,
which it's not a pleasant experience.
But I imagine this smells far worse than that.
It's rough.
All right, that makes Mark Kenyon today's winner with seven correct answers.
Where you go, Mark.
Nice for the market.
Tony got five.
Mark, what are you going to do with that $500 donation from Me Deer?
Do you know of any conservation groups?
I've got a good one.
I think last time I won, I gave to the National Deer Association.
So I've got to give to the other one that I'm really involved with, which is backcountry hunters and anglers.
$500 going to BHA on behalf of Mark and meat eater.
Out of towners, good to see you.
It was exciting.
Great to be here.
You.
All right, join us next week for more Meat-Eater Trivia, the only game show where conservation

And he's an avid amateur.
Meat-eaters Elk Camp is live, and if you're anything like me, this is the time of year
you've been thinking about since the end of last elk season.
Elk camp isn't just another hunting trip.
It's the place where the planning stops, the excuses disappear,
and you finally get to spend time in the mountains with the people who matter most.
Whether you punch a tag or not, those mornings around camp and those miles on the mountain
are the things you remember.
That's why we pulled together the Elk Camp collection over at the Meat Eaters store
with the gear we actually reach for this time of year.
And while you're there, check out the limited edition,
meat eater Phelps, easy estrus cow call.
It sounds sweet.
We only have a few, so when they're gone, they're gone.
