Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, The Only Game Show, where conservation always wins. There is a prize.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Me Deeder will donate $500 to the Conservation Organization of the Winners Choosing. I'm your host, Spencer Newark, and today we're joined by Seth, Logan, Sarah, Alyssa, John, and Jen Pearson. This is a 10 round quiz show with questions from meat eaters for verticals, which are hunting, which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking. Meadeter trivia is brought to you by one of my favorite beers, Bush Light. Bush Light, Head for the Mountains. All right, Jen, first time on the show. Tell folks what you do here at meat eater.
Starting point is 00:02:28 I am the events and marketing operations coordinator. Yeah, anytime you go to a really cool meat eater event and everything seems like it's, it's running smooth and nothing is on fire. That's thanks to Jen. That's the hope. It's just feel like that that you're just trying to not have things on fire for these events? Yes, and a lot of cat hurting. Yeah, a lot of cat hurting with our crew.
Starting point is 00:02:49 Jen, what are going to be your strengths and weaknesses at meat eater trivia, hunting, fishing, conservation, cooking? I feel like mostly weaknesses. Okay. No strengths then. I don't know. We'll see. Maybe we'll surprise it, but there's a reason why this is my first time. All right.
Starting point is 00:03:04 We'll find out what Jen does. Okay, we're starting today's show with a question for the crew. If you have a question you want the crew to answer, then send your question with a subject line mailbag to trivia at the me,deater.com. This is a good one. It's from Clayton. He says, I love sardines. The girls I work with, however, hate sardines.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Specifically, they hate the smell when I eat them and apparently hate the smell that is left over when I put the empty can in our shared kitchen trash. I've tried to be reasonable. I've started rinsing the can out thoroughly before throwing it away. But apparently that isn't good enough. They could still smell it and would let me know. they were displeased. So lately, I've been gathering up all of my sardine evidence, can, packaging, napkins, whatever, and carrying it outside to the dumpster. This feels like a lot of effort,
Starting point is 00:03:51 especially considering I am the executive director. At some point, shouldn't the executive director be allowed to throw a sardine can in the office trash? Am I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Should I go back to throwing my thoroughly rinsed sardine cans in the shared kitchen trash? or have I created a precedent that I now have to live with? What are our thoughts for Clayton? I hate the smell of sardines, but that is excessive. I feel like those people need to learn how to live with some discomfort in the workplace. Like, that's a little extreme.
Starting point is 00:04:24 I love tin fish of all forms. I do think that when you're entering into an office environment, you're subscribing to a different social contract than the one that is at your house. microwaving fish smelly stuff in the trash can like rinse them out have some have some community minded behavior
Starting point is 00:04:46 in your workplace I think what other thoughts for crazy yeah but like how how fragile are you that you can't like have some sort of minor discomfort for like some bad smells
Starting point is 00:04:57 I mean would you stick like a salmon flay into the microwave upstairs no but that's like that's intentionally I don't know like it's him consuming sardines and then putting the trash in the garbage, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:05:09 That just seems excessive that he needs to like rinse it and, you know. Seth, what do you think? I'd love to know the office setup. Like, these people have doors to their offices that they just shut the door? I don't know. That's what I was wondering. Yeah, like does he have his own
Starting point is 00:05:26 office? This is something that executive director would be up. You'd think so. Windows. Yeah. HR, what do we think about this problem? Oh, wow. I think that some people have sensory issues. And so their smells are much more heightened than other smells. I'm not sure if that's the case here.
Starting point is 00:05:46 But I always feel like you should just be a good human. And if it is offending a few other people, is that big of a deal to walk outside and throw it away? Or just don't bring it. There's people who have allergies. You can't bring peanut butter. There's all sorts of different things. So just not that big of an inconvenience.
Starting point is 00:06:03 One of the questions that Clayton asks, He says, am I bending over backwards for my coworkers? Yes, but that's also okay. Like, I assume you like these people you work with. You said you're the executive director. You want to be like a good executive director, right? So it's probably annoying to like hike that outside and throw it away. But I bet your coworkers will appreciate you more.
Starting point is 00:06:24 It's probably worth like the minor inconvenience to just not have sardine stink in the office. Any other thoughts for Clayton? John, what kind of gross stuff through the store boys eat? Oh, everything. Yeah. Sardines? So I don't know if we ever had canned fish. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:40 But we also have a little basement, so we kind of like escaped the sales floor. So it's kind of easy to ventilate a little bit. But I mean, we, we smell everything. We smell like hunters that just came in that just shot an elk. You? Yep. Yes, I did. I shot a bowl last week.
Starting point is 00:06:56 Congratulations. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. But, oh, we've actually, we have a whole kitchen set up. So, I mean, we've cooked venison. we cooked elk, we've cooked salmon. Like all of us, all of us guys, we don't really, like, we don't say anything.
Starting point is 00:07:11 We just, yeah, we just shut the door to our downstairs kitchen where we have our lunch and cook. We have had some customers kind of say like, oh, it smells funky in here. We're like, oh, yeah, something's out in the street. Yeah. Yeah, none of you boys strike me as someone to be complaining about smells in the kitchen. No, no, no. Good luck with that one, Clayton. That's tough.
Starting point is 00:07:36 It's too bad you like the sardine so much. All right. Here is your chance to be on meat eater trivia. You, the listeners, Backcountry hunters and anglers is auctioning off a seat in the room for a game of trivia. The winning bidder will get to choose a date in 2027 to compete against Yanni and Brody and Randall and the rest of the meat eater crew. Travel lodging and meals are not included. All proceeds go to BHA.
Starting point is 00:08:01 To place your bid, go to backcountryhunters.org and check out their forged and found online auction, the bidding end September 30th. And while you're there, check out their other auction blocks, such as a turnpike troubadours concert package, a hunting and fishing trip with Cal, a guided hunt in Hawaii, a lifetime on-ex elite membership, custom tax, Jeremy, and much more. Again, that's the forged and found online auction at backcountryhunters.org. All right, the Shelby Index for today is a three, so our winner should get six correct answers. And with that, we're on to the game of trivia. Play the drop, Phil. Look, I need to know what I stand to win. Everything.
Starting point is 00:08:45 How's that? Just tend to win everything. Question one, the topic is public lands, and this will be multiple choice. Which of these places is not managed by the National Park Service? Is it Gettysburg National Park Service? Military Park. Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site. Dinosaur National Monument or Pawnee National Grassland.
Starting point is 00:09:20 So three of those places are managed by the National Park Service. One of them is not. Which one is it? Gettysburg National Military Park. Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site. Dinosaur National Monument or Pawnee National Park. National Grassland, which one is not managed by the National Park Service? Everyone in the room is just going to be making a guess.
Starting point is 00:09:54 No confident, no quick answers for question one. Which of these places is not managed by the Park Service? Gettysburg National Military Park. Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site. Dinosaur National Monument. Pawnee National Grassland. This is a tough first question. Category of Public Lands.
Starting point is 00:10:23 Seth's still writing. Seth, are you ready? Yeah, I changed my answer. Last minute. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Pawnee National Grassland. Logan and Sarah say Edgar Allan Poe. John says dinosaur. Jen, dinosaur, Alyssa, Gettysburg.
Starting point is 00:10:45 The correct answer. Is Pawnee National Grasslands? Just set. National Military Parks and National Historic Sites are managed by the National Park Service. National monuments are managed by a number of agencies, but mostly belong to the National Park Service. And National Grasslands are managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Question two. The topic is cooking.
Starting point is 00:11:12 This next great question is via Leland Hart. This seven-letter work. is defined as, quote, a cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. This seven-letter word is defined as a cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. John and Logan and Seth all have their answers. What, Jen, you got it. John, tell us about killing that bowl. Had a sweet video of it happening.
Starting point is 00:11:57 How'd you film that? You just sat your phone up behind you? Well, no, I actually, I bought a 360 GoPro, and I actually bought it like three weeks ago. I'm like, yeah, this will be a cool thing to kind of try out. And there's like a little remote that I attached to my wrist, so just press a button and it starts filming.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Obviously, 360 covers all angles. But I went out, it was extremely rainy morning that morning and the mud going in was absolutely legendary. I almost got, I almost got stuck three different times, but got up onto a ridge line, didn't hear any bugles. So I just kind of like started covering drainage and got to a glassing knob, glass down into a drainage and saw him way at the bottom like 500 yards away, raking, just a small little pine tree. and so I moved in and got to about like
Starting point is 00:12:49 150, 200 yards from him threw out a couple of cow calls and he just came right to me from the time I called to when like I was drawn back and it was probably 15 seconds I mean he came right in that's cool
Starting point is 00:13:04 great video what what's your Instagram handle that people can watch it my Instagram is just my full name John J-O-N Montresor M-O-N-T-R-S-R all lowercase and no space. And the way it played out, it looked like just a white tail hunter waiting for a white tail to walk by. That's pretty much what it was, honestly. Yeah, the wind was perfect direction. If I did, if I did let him go just a little bit more, he probably would have caught a whiff of me. But my first saw him is at 40 yards, and he closed that into 25, and I was shooting downhill. So my arrow did hit a bit high. And I knew I got one lung and some artery for sure. So he was going to die. So,
Starting point is 00:13:45 I backed out, got to my glassing knob, and then glassed him up dead in his bed 100 yards from where I shot him. Well done. Head into the Meteor store and give John a high five. All right again, we're on question two. The seven-letter word is defined as a cut of meat taken from the breast or lower chest area of a hoofed animal, specifically over the sternum. Is everybody ready? Go ahead and reveal your answer. Set says Brisket, Logan Brisket, Sarah Brisket, John Brisket, Jen without an answer, Alyssa without an answer. The correct answer is brisket. To learn how to cook a deer brisket, go check out Daniel Pruitt's article on the meat eater.com called balsamic brazed venison. It is a perfect five-star rating. Ben 304 noted it has the texture and taste of very good roast beef.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Amos Dean 53 said it's his new favorite roast recipe and C. Trimble compared it to eating at a fine dining restaurant. I think Daniel's balsamic brazen. venison recipe. So good. She specifically uses a brisket on that. The other one with like all the red onions and balsamic vinegar. Have you seen the recipe? I probably have. I don't remember which one that is though. So good.
Starting point is 00:14:58 I'm pretty sure I know the one they're talking about. I use that with bear. Phenomenal. We're on to question three. The topic is hunting. This next great question is via Daniel Steeman. Amos Slade sings, quote, I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie. Jen's got this one, I think.
Starting point is 00:15:26 Amos Slade sings, I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar in this 1981 animated Disney movie. Alyssa, do you have this one? I believe so. Sarah, do you have this one? I have a good guess. Okay.
Starting point is 00:15:47 John, Seth, and Logan, not so sure, though. Should have watched more Disney. Should have had kids earlier. Amos Slade says, I don't know, I'm second guessing. I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man. And I'd rather have a dog than a dollar
Starting point is 00:16:06 into this 1981 animated Disney movie. We might have a little performance from Phil the Engineer after this one. Seth, do you have a good answer. I don't know. I just threw one down that might make sense. John, you have an answer? I do. Logan, you good? Yep. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says, Fox and the Hound. Logan, 101 Dalmatians. Sarah, Fox and the Hound. John, Bambi, Jen, Fox and Hound, Alyssa, the Fox and the Hound. The The Fox and the Hound. Well done, room. Amos is the grumpy, gun-toe.
Starting point is 00:16:51 neighbor and antagonist of the fox and the hound. He becomes the big bad of the movie when he vows to kill a fox that he spots near his henhouse. As Amos says in his song, he makes his living as a hunter and trapper. His only singing happens during the four-verse tune called A Hunting Man. Here is Phil Taylor performing it. Take it away, Phil. I ain't got no job. I'm a hunting man, and I'd rather have a dog than a dollar.
Starting point is 00:17:18 So let's go banjo wringling a ding-ho. Give a little hoot and a holler. Wow. Well, oh, thank you. I ever do a remake. That was beautiful.
Starting point is 00:17:29 50 years later. The first movie that ever made me cry. Wow. It's a sad one. I don't know. I don't recall anything about it. What part was so touching?
Starting point is 00:17:39 I don't remember. I haven't watched it since I was nine years old and I cried. Wow. I didn't even know that when I asked you to sing Amos's song. Well done, Phil. Question for the topic is gear. Bill Jordan founded this brand
Starting point is 00:17:51 in 1986. That's it. That's the whole question. I was hoping for some more clues in there. That's all you get. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. Seth, quick to answer. John, quick to answer.
Starting point is 00:18:10 A couple PA boys. Mm-hmm. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. We knew this one for sure. I have used this brand for a good majority of my life. Okay. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986.
Starting point is 00:18:29 Everyone had a sticker on their truck in high school. Oh yeah. More hands? Keep going. It's bigger or smaller than a loaf of bread. How would that help you? John and I went to high schools that played each other in sports and stuff. Yep.
Starting point is 00:18:48 Okay. Who was the better team? Bald Eagle. Yeah, for sure. His for sure. Sets High School was the big brother and Johns was the little brother in this relationship.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Absolutely. Bill Jordan founded this brand in 1986. We're on question four. No, it's a good guess, though. No. We're using all the context that John and said.
Starting point is 00:19:19 Yeah, you know, do you ever repeat answers but change the question? I'm not going to give you any hints here, but... Answer that after, though, because I am curious if you just change the clue. Is everybody ready?
Starting point is 00:19:37 Yes. Alyssa, do you have an answer? I have two, but I'm going to go with the one I didn't cross out. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Set says Realtree. Logan L.L.B. and Sarah without an answer. John, Realtree. Jen, without an answer, Alyssa, Mosse Oak.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Close. The correct answer is Realtree. Real tree started as one camo pattern that Bill Jordan made to mimic the bark of real trees. He then created the real tree outdoors TV show in the early 90s, which is credited for establishing the modern format of hunting television. It first aired on TNN, the National Network, and then got a spot on ESPN in the early 2000s. About to answer your question, Logan, real tree would be hard not to talk about them more than once in like five years. So real tree has been an answer before. It's been talked about in the show before, as has LLB. So it'll happen.
Starting point is 00:20:32 I run to question five. The topic is wildlife. This is our listener question of the week, which was won by David Beck for sending this great question. David is going to get a $150 first light gift card. If you want a chance to win the listener question of the week, then send your question to trivia at the meat eater.com. Black capped, chestnut backed, Carolina, Mountain, and boreal are all types of this nine-letter songbird. black capped chestnut backed
Starting point is 00:21:07 Carolina Mountain and boreal are all types of this nine-letter songbird We will get a scoreboard update from Phil Taylor after this
Starting point is 00:21:18 Seth's got it John you got this one Sarah you got this one Probably not Okay you got a nine-letter bird though Logan do you have this one I had an eight-letter bird And then I made it a nine-letter bird
Starting point is 00:21:32 Which that's all doesn't say much because my spelling's not the greatest. Okay. It's called thinking outside the box. Maybe. Black capped, chestnut backed, Carolina, Mountain, and Boreal
Starting point is 00:21:45 are all types of this nine-letter songbird. You just awakened some sort of memory for me, Spencer, with that last question. Because when I used to work in TV, one of the shows I worked on, RealTree was like a sponsor.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Oh. Oh, cool. And for years after I worked there, I would hear the guy reading it in my head. And it would NRA All Access is brought to you by Bill Jordan's Real Dream. And, uh, and I forgot about it until today. And now I'm going to hear it in my. What was the show?
Starting point is 00:22:17 NRA All Access. Oh, hmm. I'm glad Phil got to edit NRA All Access. Me too. Good for him. All right. Is everybody ready with a nine letter songbird? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
Starting point is 00:22:34 Seth and Logan say chickadee. Sarah says Blackbird. John, chickadee. Jen without an answer, Alyssa Blackbird. The correct answer is Chickadee. I'm sorry, Logan. We're going to give you the point,
Starting point is 00:22:50 but your spelling was not even close. C-H-I-C-A-D-E-E. But we're going to give you the point. Because chickadees don't migrate, they need to rely. on hidden caches of food during winter. To do this, they grow new brain cells in the fall that allow them to expand their memory. Chickadees are named after their distinct alarm call that sounds like they're saying,
Starting point is 00:23:16 Chickadee-D-D-D-D. Play it, Phil. It's buffering, Spencer. Okay. Great sound. Chick-a-D-D-D-D-D. That's how they got their name. Now you'll know what that is when you're outside.
Starting point is 00:23:39 All right, and now it's time for our Draft King's question of the week. week. Thanks to Draft Kings, you get some bonus trivia in this week's episode. The room looks like they're going to do well on this one. Arkansas's biggest college is represented by this mascot, which is a nine-letter
Starting point is 00:24:19 word for Farrell Hog. Just waiting on John down there to come up with his answer for the Draft King's question of the week. It's like, I don't know, for some reason, like, oh wait, hang on a second. He's a Pennsylvania boy. He'll know this Arkansas

Starting point is 00:28:01 Oh, perfect game. I'm going to go backwards this time and say that Seth's got a perfect game. He hasn't even talked about it. Rarely does a perfect game make it to this point without someone letting us know that. This is a group of modest, respectful human beings. I want to jinx myself. Not usually the case.
Starting point is 00:28:19 Right behind Seth, this is John with three points. And we've got Logan and Sarah with two. Jen and Alyssa have one. Question six. The topic is fishing. This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of all time. Seth looks like he's going to be six for six.
Starting point is 00:28:45 His whiteboard is down. The topic is fishing. this TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of all time. Sarah and Jen and John, now locking in their answers. Logan doesn't watch enough Discovery Channel. When I first read that question,
Starting point is 00:29:10 I thought it was Disney Channel. I was like, why is it? The second Disney Channel question, well, I think Discovery's owned by Disney. I think, yeah, yeah. Okay, yes, this is our second Disney question. I like read it as Disney Channel. for some reason and I was like, what, dude?
Starting point is 00:29:23 This TV show holds the Discovery Channel record for their longest running series of all time. This is question six. The topic is fishing. Alyssa now coming up with an answer. John, we need you to keep pace with Seth here. Make this an interesting game. I'm going to have this one right.
Starting point is 00:29:45 I'm going to try. I think so. Yeah. We're going to wait for Alyssa to finish writing and then flip over the light boards. I think Discovery is actually Warner Brothers because it's a part of that whole HBO when they added like a bunch of TVO
Starting point is 00:29:57 or Discovery shows to HBO and it was, but So change your answer? Alyssa? No. Go ahead and reveal your answers. Seth says Deadliest Catch. Logan, Planet Life.
Starting point is 00:30:12 Sarah, deadliest catch. John River Monsters. Jen, deadliest catch. Alyssa, Crocodile Hunter. The correct answer is Deadliest. Deadliest Catch. Deadliest catch started in 2005 and aired their 22nd season earlier this year. The show follows commercial crab fishermen working in the Bering Sea.
Starting point is 00:30:32 According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, commercial fishing has the highest occupational fatality rate in America. On the show's pilot, they say that it averages out to one death per week during peak crabbing season with an injury rate that's close to 100%. Question seven, the topic is conservation. This next great question is via Austin White. How many colors are on the fire danger today sign? Is this the Austin White that used to work here?
Starting point is 00:31:08 I don't think it's that Austin White. But they didn't tell me otherwise. We can pretend it is. Okay. I don't know. How many colors are on the fire danger today sign? Seth, Forestry boy over here. Came up with an answer real quick.
Starting point is 00:31:26 Now I'm like sexy. I'm like, I'm like staring at the sign. Yeah. How many colors are on the fire danger today sign? We've all seen it. It's hard to
