Starting point is 00:02:18 Kelly to switch to America's wireless company, Pure Talk. The DOJ charging the mayor of Arcadia, California on Monday, with one count of acting in the United States as an illegal agent of a foreign government. Fifty-eight-year-old Eileen Wang resigning from her position and agreeing to plead guilty. Beginning in 2020 and continuing through at least the end of 2022, the DOJ alleges Wang and her then-fiance, Mike Sun, a Chinese national, ran U.S. News Center, a site presenting as a legitimate news outlet, but allegedly used to publish pro-China content under the direction of Chinese government officials. In February, Sun, who also worked on Wang's election campaign, sentenced to four years in prison for his role in the scheme. Wang elected to the city council in November 2022, serving as mayor on a rotating basis.
Starting point is 00:03:15 Arcadia is an L.A. County city, where Asian Americans make up nearly 60% of the population. In one June 2021 example, prosecutors say a Chinese government official sent Wang pre-written articles for U.S. News Center. including an essay denying genocide and forced labor in Xinjiang, the western Chinese region at the center of Beijing's crackdown on Uyghur Muslims. Within minutes, Wang allegedly posted the article to the site, then sent the Chinese official a link to the piece. The Chinese official responding, quote, So fast, thank you, everyone.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Wang's lawyers releasing a statement this week emphasizing that the alleged misconduct took place in her personal capacity, not as an elected official, and putting the blame on her former fiancé from the statement, quote, events in Ms. Wang's personal life, including her trust and love for apparently the wrong person who ultimately led her astray, require her to step away from public service. She apologizes and is sorry for the mistakes she has made in her personal life. Her love and devotion for the Arcadia community have not changed and did not waver. Wang's engagement to Sun reportedly ending in this.
Starting point is 00:04:27 spring of 2004, Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda Elbegin, who is prosecuting this case speaking to CBS News, L.A. on Monday. These are all things where transparency is paramount and the campaign that China is engaging in and enlisting agents here who are not acting overtly really undermines our national security and it undermines the democratic fabric of our society. The Arcadia City Council releasing a statement on Monday, quote, following an internal review, we can confirm that no city finances, staff, or decision-making processes were involved. A new mayor will be selected from the remaining city council members at the next council meeting, Council member Sharon Kwan speaking Monday to CBS News.
Starting point is 00:05:14 You know, unfortunately, I think this has damaged public confidence, but I also believe Arcata is resilient. we can move forward, being honest, transparent, and, you know, committed to accountability. Wang, making an initial court appearance on Monday, she is expected to officially enter her guilty plea in the coming weeks. She faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. FBI director Cash Patel appearing yesterday before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee to testify on the Bureau's 2007 budget request. Democrats quickly turning the budget hearing toward Patel's own record after weeks of unflattering headlines about the director's conduct, judgment, and use of government resources. Patel facing scrutiny over reports that he has frequently used government aircraft for personal travel.
Starting point is 00:06:05 In February, Director Patel drawing negative attention after he was seen inside the Team USA locker room, following the men's Olympic hockey team's gold medal win over Canada, chugging a beer in celebration with the team. In April, the Atlantic publishing a deeply critical story citing current and former FBI officials who described Patel as increasingly absent from the Bureau's day-to-day operations while raising concerns about his drinking and management style. Patel now suing the magazine for $250 million alleging defamation. Ranking member of the committee, Senator Chris Van Hollen, Democrat from Maryland, going after the director in a blistering opening statement.
Starting point is 00:06:46 I look forward to hearing about the various budget requests, but we should acknowledge that we are not gathered here at this hearing at a normal time. Because what we are learning about what's happening at the FBI is anything but normal. Director Patel, as you ask for more taxpayer resources, we cannot look away from the credible, extremely troubling reports about your misconduct at the FBI. And Director Patel, these reports about your conduct, including reports of you're being so drunk and hung over that your staff had to force entry into your home, are extremely alarming. If true, they demonstrate a gross dereliction of your duty and a betrayal of public trust. Director Patel briefly addressing the allegations in his opening statement, dismissing them as baseless and pointing to a series of FBI stats, he says, show major progress under his leadership, including stop. four terrorist attacks last December alone across California, Pennsylvania, Texas, and New York. Patel also pointing to the Bureau's work, protecting children.
Starting point is 00:07:51 We've also seen unprecedented progress in protecting our most vulnerable, our children. In 2025, we located more than 6,300 missing kids. That's a 30% increase from 2024. And we arrested more than 2,000 child predators and human traffickers in 2025. That's a 17% increase in 2024. We also wiped out four million pedophile accounts off the dark web entirely. And we also focused in on the 764 network, those who especially target our youth and our vulnerable online. The most heated exchanges coming with Senator Van Hollen.
Starting point is 00:08:26 Multiple reports, including reporting by the Atlantic, have alleged episodes of excessive drinking, unexplained absences, and behavior that concern current and former FBI and DOJ officials. You have publicly denied those allegations. filed a defamation lawsuit. So today, as you testify before Congress, is it your testimony that those allegations are categorically false? Unequivocally categorically false. So there have been no occasions during your tenure when FBI personnel were unable to promptly reach you? Absolutely not. You can ask my entire workforce. Unlike your baseless reports, the only person that was slinging margaritas in El Salvador on the taxpayer dollar with a convicted gangbanging rapist was you.
Starting point is 00:09:09 You know, the fact that ran up a $7,000 bar tab in Washington, D.C. This suggests to me. This suggests to me. The allegations are true. Are you polygraping? Director Patel, come on. Patel, they're referencing Senator Van Hollins' two thousand 25 trip to El Salvador to meet with Kilmar-Abrigo Garcia.
Starting point is 00:09:32 The then-deported Salvadoran National Democrats branded as just, quote, Maryland man, despite the Trump administration identifying, him as an MS-13 gang member, wife-beater, and alleged human trafficker. Photos from the meeting showing margaritas on the table, though Senator Van Hollen maintains the drinks were placed there by Salvadoran officials, and neither man touched them. Republican Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana later stepping in to give Patel room to defend his travel. One of my colleagues talks, Director Patel, about you traveling too much.
Starting point is 00:10:07 Is it important that you go out there and travel and talk to our line agents and try to maintain morale? That's one of the most important parts of the job. And if I can, when it comes to travel, I've actually traveled one third less for personal holidays than my prior two predecessors combined. And I've taken half as many days off as my prior predecessors combined. Have you ever seen United States senators travel, including overseas? Frequently. You've saying that? Yes, sir.
Starting point is 00:10:40 Coming up, a temporary ban on federal Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood is nearing its end, as President Trump offers no clear commitment to extending it. And a Massachusetts roadway turning into a scene of terror as a gunman fires on pedestrians and cars before a state trooper, along with a former Marine, rush in to stop him. A temporary ban on federal Medicaid payments to planned parenthood and other abortion providers set to expire this summer, as President Trump signals Republicans may not have the votes or the will to extend it. On July 4th of the last year, President Trump signing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act,
Starting point is 00:12:28 the bill narrowly passing through reconciliation. That's a special budget process allowing legislation to bypass the Senate filibuster and pass with a simple majority as long as it meets certain budget rules. Included in the law, a one-year provision blocking Medicaid payments from going to certain abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest such provider. That restriction set to expire on July 4th, meaning unless lawmakers act, federal Medicaid dollars,
Starting point is 00:12:59 meaning your money, could once again flow to Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics covered by the provision. President Trump, Monday in the Oval, asked, if he wants Republicans to use reconciliation again to extend the ban. You're one big, beautiful bill, defunded Planned Parenthood for one year, but that expires on this July 4th. Would you like Congress to use reconciliation? Well, we'll see what happens.
Starting point is 00:13:22 Congress is now negotiated. We've been very good for the people that want it, for the people that are here. And we'll see how that goes. It's been a very thorny, to put it to put it by on me, it's been a very thorny issue. it's all under negotiation right now. Before the Big Beautiful Bill, Planned Parenthood receiving roughly $800 million a year in taxpayer funding, primarily through federal health programs, according to Fox News.
Starting point is 00:13:50 At the time, the Planned Parenthood CEO, Alexis McGill Johnson, warning the funding loss could force roughly 200 clinics to close, ultimately 51 of Planned Parenthood's health centers closed across 18 states in 2025, as some Democrat-led states announced new funding to help offset the loss of federal dollars. Now Congress preparing a new reconciliation package, President Trump setting a June 1st deadline for that bill to reach his desk. Republican leaders hinting at a slimmed-down package,
Starting point is 00:14:22 focusing on border security and immigration enforcement. The Washington Examiner reporting House Speaker Mike Johnson is not considering extending the Medicaid funding ban for Planned Parenthood in this bill. A terrifying scene out of Cambridge, Massachusetts on Monday afternoon, a man armed with a semi-automatic rifle firing roughly 50 to 60 rounds at pedestrians and vehicles as he advanced on foot down a busy roadway along the Charles River outside of Boston. Two people and at least a dozen vehicles, including a police cruiser, struck during the rampage. The victims, two men, now hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Starting point is 00:15:05 He's identifying the suspect as 46-year-old Tyler Brown of Boston. The campaign of terror coming to an end as a state trooper, along with a former Marine, moved toward the suspect opening fire. Middlesex County District Attorney Marion Ryan at a press conference yesterday, describing what happened next. Both the civilian and the trooper fired their weapons, and that suspect was struck multiple times in the extremities. the suspect was then treated on scene by those same officers who'd been attempting to end the situation.
Starting point is 00:15:40 He was transported to a Boston hospital where he is being treated for gunshot wounds to the extremities. The attack sending people scrambling in fear for their lives, one woman telling a local NBC affiliate, the former Marine who helped stop the shooter, first saved her life. A man came around, went around. his car and pulled open my car door and made like a barricade. He had a gun and he told me to run and I ran and then I just ran as fast as I could. D.A. Ryan declining to name the Marine for privacy reasons, but crediting him and the trooper with ending the attack within minutes. Ryan outlining the charges and the status of the investigation. Mr. Brown is in custody at the hospital. He's going to be
Starting point is 00:16:32 charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, possession charges with respect to the weapon, as well as a variety of other charges as we unfold what took place exactly. And we have a chance to speak to the many, many people who were out there. Boston.com reporting on Brown's extensive rap sheet prior to Monday's assault. According to the outlet, Brown was on probation for firing multiple rounds at Boston police officers in May 2020. Despite prosecutors requesting a 10 to 12-year sentence, Judge Janet L. Sanders sentencing Brown to five to six years with credit for time served. Boston 25 News reporting, Brown was on both parole and probation supervision at the time of this latest shooting stemming from a long list of prior offenses, including armed assault with intent to murder, firearms charges, and witness intimidation.
Starting point is 00:17:26 According to parole board documents obtained by the station, Brown had been released from jail last May to serve the rest of his five to six year sentence under parole supervision. A Massachusetts parole officer reportedly contacting the Boston PD about an hour before the shooting, the officer raising concerns after a phone call with Brown, in which Brown self-reported relapsing into drug use and said he intended to end his own life. Brown had been released from a local psychiatric hospital on Friday. The DA saying on Monday, investigators did not find a connection between Brown and any of the people he targeted in the attack. Brown's arraignment not yet set as he remains under medical treatment. And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly.
