Bring in his good pals Jeffrey Epstein and Galane Maxwell with him to the Monarch. wedding and the post has exclusive proof. Plus, after five whole days, the cops have made zero progress in the shooting at Brown University. Wait until you hear what they admitted to. Those
Starting point is 00:00:42 stories and much more today, Thursday, December 18th. I'm Caitlin Becker and this is the New York Postcast. The manhunt for the Brown University shooter is not going well. Police in Providence Rhode Island admitted Wednesday evening that the assailant, quote, could be While the primary focus is finding the gunmen, police seem to be at a loss as to how to do that, and the public is wondering how they have seemingly bungled this case so spectacularly. Now, for starters, there's the issue of security cameras. The university has about 1,200 of them, just few, if any, on the back of the building where the shooting took place and where the shooter exited.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Now, cops say that's likely because that part of the building is older. But the president's official campus residence is even older, and the post spotted three cameras there on Google Street View. Then, remember, a lot of hay was made and time wasted shortly after the incident when authorities captured a, quote, person of interest. Cops said they found a gun with a unique laser attached, and they seemed to have their man. That was until they released him after hours and hours and hours of questioning. time spent not looking for the real killer and by now you've probably seen their next person of interest this slightly pudgy man with a unique way of walking investigators growing desperate for any lead at all have also released another grainy photo of someone wearing a backpack this person was seen on video simply walking nearby that pudgy guy i just mentioned video released by authorities show the person of interest spotting this other man with a backpack and then sprinting down a side street, then the guy with the backpack turns down the same street and begins running too, same direction. Now, if you're confused about who's who with the backpack and
Starting point is 00:02:34 the weird walk and the involvement and the running, me too. And that is caused for concern about the state of this investigation. Cops now want to know why both of them took off heading the same way. Remember those Trump accounts the president announced recently the ones that Michael and Susan Dell contributed a ton of cash to? Well, another billionaire is pony and up some of his family's dough, too. Hedge fund manager Ray Dalio is pledging 250 bucks for 300,000 kids in his home state of Connecticut as part of these Trump accounts that will launch on July 4th. The announcement came ahead of President Trump's address to the nation last night, where he outlined the economic accomplishments of the first 11 months of his second term.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I'm fixing it. And our country was left at from all over the world, but they're not laughing anymore. Over the past 11 months, we have brought more positive change to Washington than any administration in American history. The president presented charts, highlighting price increases that came under President Biden and decreases that have happened under his administration, like changes in wages and the employment level for American-born citizens. And he promised more positive changes, specifically to what he referred to as the, quote, Unaffordable Care Act, or Obamacare,
Starting point is 00:03:56 and reiterated his desire to have health care subsidies go directly to American consumers. He also teased what he called the most aggressive housing reform plans in history for 2026. And for the military, the president announced a warrior dividend. It's basically a Christmas present of $1776 headed to service members within the next week. This brief speech under 20 minutes was kind of like a. state of the union, and he ended by going back to where his whole movement started. We're putting America first, and we are making America great again. Very simple. We are making America great again. I'm about to tell you the never-before reported story about former president
Starting point is 00:04:37 Bill Clinton and how he asked Moroccan King Muhammad the 6th if he could bring a couple of pals along to the king's wedding, Jeffrey Epstein and Galene Maxwell. As one does, Clinton caught a ride on Epstein's Lolita Express Private Jet and then posed with the sex trafficking couple for a photo exclusively obtained by the post. I will link to that photo in the show notes. Chelsea Clinton, who was studying at Oxford at the time, flew separately, but according to a source, insisted that the photo, which she is also in, be taken at this super fancy affair. Now, Hillary Clinton, then a New York senator, was not in attendance. This bizarre situation comes to light just as time is running out for the Department of Justice to make the Epstein files.
Starting point is 00:05:20 public, finally. Now, this unusual, if not rude, request to bring some plus twos to the affair apparently didn't phase the king. Clinton, Epstein, and Maxwell reportedly sat with the monarch at the fancy wedding dinner. Nick Reiner, facing murder charges for the death of his parents, Robin Michelle, made his first appearance in court on Wednesday. He was shackled and dressed in this bright blue anti-suicide smock. The 32-year-old Nepo baby stared straight ahead, offered no hint of emotion during this brief appearance. His only words were, yes, Your Honor, and this was when he was asked if he waived his right to a speedy trial. Defendants usually do that when their defense team wants or needs just more time to get their case together. Both
Starting point is 00:06:11 prosecutors and Reiner's high-powered defense attorney Alan Jackson agreed to push his formal arraignment to January 7th. And the judge also granted the defense's request that no photos be allowed for yesterday's five-minute hearing. Rob and Michelle Reiner's other children, Jake and Romy, broke their silence on the family tragedy without any mention of their brother. The pair released a statement that read in part, quote, the horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michelle Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents, they were our best friends. They thanked family, friends, and the public for their condolences and their support, and then, of course, they asked for privacy. Now, their statement comes in light of new details
Starting point is 00:06:53 about just how Rob and Michelle were found. For that and more, I'm joined by the Post Deputy Managing Editor Michael Zeni, who has been following this case from the start. Michael, there's new reporting about the discovery of the bodies and the timeline of the crime. We know that Romie was the one who walked in to find this just gut-wrenching crime scene. What else? do we know? Yeah, so I think there's a few things to parse here. First of all, we're trying really hard to piece together the exact kind of whereabouts of Rob and Michelle, but also Nick Reiner.
Starting point is 00:07:31 We know that there was a massive blow-up at this Conan O'Brien party. It's unclear what time they left. Then Nick is seen around 12, 15 a.m. on a gas station surveillance camera, and then he checks into a hotel room about four hours later, it is not until, you know, like 12 hours after that, that his parents are discovered dead. And it's actually, it's not until a masseuse who was scheduled to come on Sunday rings the doorbell. There's no response. and that's when the daughter Romi was called and discovered her dad dead.
Starting point is 00:08:16 Just the thought of how that poor girl is going to recover from this, she probably never will. It's just every twist and turn seems to be worse and worse and worse. And that party at Conan O'Brien's house that you just mentioned, it kind of feels like the beginning of the end of the tragic night. They had this big blow-up argument, like you said, Rob Reiner and Nick Reiner in the hours before the murders at the house. people took notice. It definitely disrupted things. So what else happened at the party that we know about? Yeah. So first of all, we should say that he, that Nick was not invited to this party that Rob had actually reached out to Conan, according to the reporting, and asked if he could bring his son because he didn't want him to be alone. Then at the party, what we're hearing from
Starting point is 00:09:06 multiple guests who were there is that he was acting really strangely. And the big thing that we're hearing is that he was asking people three questions. What is your first name? What is your last name? And are you famous? Which is, you know, if you in this world, I can only imagine is a very strange thing to, I mean, it's a strange thing to ask at any normal party, much less at a party with a lot of A-list celebrities, right? And consider, the fact that his father's best friend is Billy Crystal, who's basically like an uncle to the family. This is a person who is around famous people their entire life. So to ask that question strikes me as odd. Yeah. And it seems that so what we're hearing is one person in particular was not
Starting point is 00:09:56 amused with this, and that is comedian Bill Hater. And he reportedly just told Nick that he was in a private conversation. And that kind of resulted in this massive blowup, a massive public fight that led to Rob and Michelle and Nick all leaving the party together. And it's shortly thereafter then that we believe that they were, they were murdered. Now, there's been a lot of buzz about the high-powered attorney that's representing Nick Reiner. Alan Jackson, he just got Karen Reed off of, you know, her charges in Massachusetts. He's a big name in Los Angeles. He is not cheap, and he's very, very good.
Starting point is 00:10:43 So how was he able to get him on board? And who is paying those legal fees? You know, this is your $10 million question, right? I say $10 million because that's what he says that Karen Reid's case basically would have cost if he had paid her full freight. But the thing that we know about Alan Jackson is that he loves the publicity, right? And this is his biggest case yet. You know, he's the guy who put away Phil Spector.
Starting point is 00:11:15 He's defended successfully, Kevin Spacey. Obviously, he became a true crime legend with his defense of Karen Reed. But this is going to be the biggest one yet. So what's not clear is sort of how much money he's commanding from Nick and where Nick might be getting the money, whether there's, you know, a trust or whether he's, you know, pledging a portion of the inheritance or what? I have questions, of course, about just the probate of it all and the inheritance and how that works if you're potentially held legally culpable for the death.
Starting point is 00:11:54 I mean, there are so many other layers to this story. and we're going to get to every twist and turn of it thanks to the wonderful reporting that your reporters are doing at the post. Your team has done an exceptional job on this story. Michael Zennie, thank you so much for joining us. Thank you. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino took to X to announce
Starting point is 00:12:14 he'll be leaving his post as the Bureau's number two man in January. The announcement didn't come as a huge surprise, considering it came after reports that he was already packing up his office and saying goodbye to his staff. Now, President Trump weighed in suggesting that the former TV host might be heading back to his roots. Dan did a great job. I think he wants to go back to his show. Bongino considered leaving the Bureau back in July after a heated exchange with Attorney
Starting point is 00:12:40 General Pam Bondi over the handling of the Epstein files. Before joining the FBI, Bongino supported Epstein conspiracy theories, including the suggestion that the pedophile was murdered in his cell and didn't actually take his own life. Now, it's widely believed that Andrew Bailey, co-depity director and former Missouri Attorney General, will assume Bongino's role. 67-year-old Charles Foner is scheduled to report to prison next month to begin a four-year sentence for shooting and killing a man named Cody Gonzalez. Sounds horrible, and trust me, this story is, but by the time I'm done telling you everything, you're probably going to be on team Charles Foner.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Back in 2023, Foner, a likable, chatty New York City doorman, one of the time. out for a pack of cigarettes. Crime in his queen's neighborhood was on the rise, so he brought with him a revolver just in case. Now, when he returned home, an unhinged man who turned out to have a mile long rap sheet was banging on the door of his building, the man, Cody Gonzalez, turned around and then tried to mug Foner. He wanted his phone and those cigarettes. When we talked to Foner, he told the post, quote, he kept coming closer and clearly he was going to attack me. And that is exactly what it looked like. The would-be mugger was seen charging at Foner and security footage. Now, Foner had his gun out in that exact moment and fired, killing Gonzalez. He then called 911
Starting point is 00:14:07 and cooperated with authorities. But here's where things really go off the rails. This wasn't a self-defense case. It's a weapons case. Which just makes it all the more enraging that this man is being sent away at all. Foner says the district attorney who charged him with criminal weapons charges, and not Gonzalez's death, is only interested in the politics, using him to boast about getting guns off the street. He told us, quote, they're ignoring the dangerous people committing crimes every day. Now, as he gets ready for life on the inside, phoneer sadly said, quote, I have friends in Queens who might move or they might be dead. I mean, I might not come out. Make this make sense to me, because from where I'm sitting, based on what I know, none of this makes a lot.
