President Trump on Friday meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani, the highly anticipated sit-down coming after months of name-calling between the two. President Trump's surprising many by offering the incoming leader of America's largest city a warm welcome and kind words.
Starting point is 00:02:25 to congratulate the mayor. He really ran an incredible race against, you know, a lot of smart people. I appreciated the meeting with the president, and as he said, it was a productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City, and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers. I appreciated the time with the president. I appreciated the conversation. I look forward to working together to deliver that affordability for New Yorkers. You know, we had some interesting conversation, and some of his ideas really are the same ideas that I have. We actually, people would be shocked, but I want to see the same thing. Despite the rosy opening, the press jumping straight to Mr. Trump's past comments describing
Starting point is 00:03:06 Mamdani as a communist, but the president now expressing an open mind about what to expect from Mamdani. I mean, he's got views that are a little out there, but who knows, I mean, we're going to see what works. He's going to change also. We all change. I change a lot. changed a lot from when I first came to office. It's now quite a while ago. We had discussions on something. I'm not going to discuss what they were, but I feel very confident that he can do a very good job. I think he's going to be, I think he is going to surprise some conservative people, actually, and some very liberal people. He won't surprise it because they already like him. The diplomatic approach continuing throughout the half-hour event, including this moment when
Starting point is 00:03:47 President Trump stepped in to diffuse a question over whether Mom Dani thinks President Trump is a fascist. Are you affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist? I've spoken about... That's okay. You can just say, yes. Okay. It's easier. It's easier than explaining it, I don't mind. President Trump previously floating the idea of sending in the National Guard to aid in New York City deportations, a familiar play for the non-cooperative cities across this country.
Starting point is 00:04:15 However, on Friday, Mr. Trump, again focusing on shared goals rather than issuing threats. Mr. President, you've threatened to send federal troops to New York City. You both have differences when it comes to ICE agents in New York City. Mr. Mondani, you've called ICE a rogue government entity. I wonder how you reconcile your differences on both of those issues. Well, I think we're going to work them out, and I think that if we have known murderers and known drug dealers and some very bad people, you know, we want to get them out. And the marijuana's have, we discussed this at great length, actually, maybe more. than anything else. He wants to have a safe New York. Ultimately, a safe New York
Starting point is 00:04:55 is going to be a great New York. We discussed ICE and New York City, and I spoke about how the laws that we have in New York City allow for New York City government to speak to the federal administration for about 170 serious crimes. On Saturday, President Trump remaining consistent in his soft-handed approach to New York, though keeping the National Guard option on the table. Do you still plan to deploy the National Guard to New York City? If they need it, the right Now, other places needed more, but if they needed, we had a very good meeting yesterday. We talked about that. But if they needed, I would do it.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Yesterday on Meet the Press, Mamdani, who in 2020 called for defunding the police, doubling down on plans to cap the number of NYPD officers at 35,000, and shift calls relating to mental health crises and homelessness to a Department of Community Safety staffed with social workers. Mamdani also asked again about his thoughts on President Trump following their moment. commentary bromance in the Oval. Mr. Mayor-elect, just to be very clear, do you think that President Trump is a fascist? And after President Trump said that, I said yes.
Starting point is 00:06:01 So you do? And that's something that I've said in the past, I say today. And I think what I appreciated about the conversation that I had with the president was that we were not shy about the places of disagreement about the politics that has brought us to this moment. And we also wanted to focus on what it could look like to deliver on a shared analysis of an affordability crisis for New Yorkers. You've also said in the past that President Trump has engaged in a, quote, attack on our democracy. You've called him a despot. Do you still believe President Trump is a threat to the democracy? Everything that I've said in the past, I continue to believe. True Social Post incoming.
Starting point is 00:06:37 On Friday night, one of MAGA's biggest stars, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green or MTG, announcing her resignation from Congress, effective January 5th, 2026. The announcement coming one week after President Trump withdrew his endorsement of MTG, just as primary season is ready to ramp up. Mr. Trump pulling his support for the Georgia Firebrand in a November 14th Truth Social Post, just hours after Green questioned whether Mr. Trump was being true to his America first pledge by spending so much time on foreign policy, a portion of MTG's video resignation here. I have fought harder than almost any other elected Republican to elect Donald Trump,
Starting point is 00:07:18 and Republicans to power. I traveled the country for years. I spent millions of my own money. I missed precious time with my family that I can never get back. Meanwhile, most of the establishment Republicans who secretly hate him and who stabbed him in the back and never defended him against anything have all been welcomed in right after the election. I have too much self-respect and dignity. I love my family way too much. And I do not want my sweet dish who have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president that we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms. And in turn, be expected to defend the president against impeachment after he hatefully dumped
Starting point is 00:08:07 tens of millions of dollars against me and tried to destroy me. Green, railing against what she calls the, quote, political industrial complex, which she says focuses more on dividing Americans than it does on solving problems. President Trump reacting to news of the resignation early Saturday morning in a truth social post, quote, Marjorie Trader Brown because of plummeting poll numbers and not wanting to face a primary challenger with a strong Trump endorsement, where she would have no chance of winning, has decided to call it quits. For some reason, primarily that I refuse to return her never-ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went bad. Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie and thank her for her service to our country.
Starting point is 00:08:51 We're not sure why he's calling her Marjorie Trader Brown, but he did post something on true social, suggesting her last name is like grass, good when green, but then when it goes bad, it turns brown. On Saturday afternoon, Mr. Trump characterizing things this way to reporters. Are you willing to forgive Congresswoman? But forgive for what? No, we just, I just disagreed with her philosophy. She started backing perhaps the worst Republican congressman
Starting point is 00:09:24 in our history, this, you know, stupid person named Massey. And I said, go your own way. And once I left her, she resigned because she would have, she would never have survived a primary. But I think she's a nice person. I know that before you had on a fight, you guys were able to work it out. No, I get along with everybody. We see the same thing happening between you and Congress.
Starting point is 00:09:47 Why not? I mean, I get along with everything. The resignation would take effect halfway through her term. In 2024, Green won Georgia's 14th district with 64.4.4% of the vote. The Cook Political Report rating the district as solidly read. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is required to set a date for a special election to fill the seat within 10 days of Greens' resignation-taking effect, making the deadline approximately January 15, 2026. The chair of the Paulding County Republican Party, which makes up part of MTG's district,
Starting point is 00:10:22 telling a local news outlet that he expects the special election to actually occur in March. With MTG stepping down, the balance of power in the House narrowing to 218 Republicans versus 213 Democrats. Coming up, President Trump reportedly weighs increasing action against Venezuela, but are Americans on board. And a bombshell fraud investigation prompts the president to revoke protected status for some Somalis in Minnesota. When customers are walking through the aisles of their local Walmart, they are not just picking up groceries or supplies. they are supporting American businesses and their communities. The real story is what's behind the label. With over two-thirds of the products Walmart buys made, grown, or assembled right here in the U.S., buying local is not just stocking shelves.
Starting point is 00:11:17 It's about strengthening communities. Because of that commitment, Walmart invested $350 billion in U.S. manufacturing, helping American companies like Fisher and Weezer specialty foods, that's a local Texas business, expand their operations in Fredericksburg, Texas, to hire more people and bring their Texas-grown peach jam to a national market. Their story is just one example of how Walmart's U.S. manufacturing investment is supporting over 750,000 American jobs. Businesses across the country are empowered to sell more, hire more, and help their communities grow. From farms to factories to final shopping carts, learn how Walmart is fueling the future of U.S. manufacturing at Walmart.com slash America at work. U.S. Senator from Michigan, Democrat Elissa Slotkin, continuing to warn the military to
Starting point is 00:12:07 disobey a hypothetical illegal order from President Trump as the administration reportedly considers broader military action against Venezuela. Senator Slotkin and five other Democrats last week putting out a video aimed at U.S. military members and the intel community, encouraging them to ignore illegal orders without even hinting what those unlawful commands might be. Many critics accusing the group of potentially sowing chaos in the ranks, causing confusion and creating situations that could become dangerous, all in pursuit of political points. President Trump writing a series of posts on truth social. This from Saturday night in all caps, quote, the traitors that told the military to disobey my orders should be in jail
Starting point is 00:12:52 right now, not roaming the fake news networks trying to explain that what they said was okay. It wasn't, and never will be. It was sedition at the highest level, and sedition is a major crime. Senator Slotkin, Sunday on ABC, pressed on whether President Trump has actually issued any illegal orders and what they might be. Do you believe President Trump has issued any illegal orders? To my knowledge, I am not aware of things that are illegal, but certainly there are some legal gymnastics that are going on with these Caribbean strikes and everything related to Venezuelize. And it is very clear that no one should follow an illegal order. But it's very murky when you look at what is an illegal order. And if you go into morally, ethically, that's a pretty
Starting point is 00:13:41 tough thing to look at and say, how do I navigate this? I don't, I mean, look, if you're going back to Nuremberg, right, that, well, they told me to do it, that's why I murdered people is not an excuse. If you look at popular culture, there's like, you watch, you know, a few good men. Like, we have plenty of examples since World War II in Vietnam, where people were told to follow illegal orders and they did it and they were prosecuted for it. A few good men. This is her evidence of troops following illegal orders. Newsflash, Alyssa. Colonel Jessup wasn't real. There wasn't actually any code red and Tom Cruise is not in the U.S. Navy. Sorry. You can't handle the truth. As for Venezuela, their drug boats are trafficking narcotics into the United States killing our young people.
Starting point is 00:14:29 The military taking out at least 21 boats, killing at least 83 suspected drug traffickers since September. The Trump administration defending the strikes as part of the president's broad national security authority. By the way, what's worse? President Trump taking out Venezuelan drug dealers bringing poison to kill Americans or President Obama droning American citizens, including minors overseas without a trial? Because, the same leftists didn't seem to have a problem with that. Four U.S. officials telling Reuters over the weekend, the U.S. is, quote, poised to launch a new phase of Venezuela-related operations in the coming days, end quote, reportedly including covert operations.
Starting point is 00:15:09 This, as a new CBS UGov poll, finding 70% of Americans would oppose taking military action in Venezuela versus 30% in favor. According to the poll, 76% of Americans believe the Trump administration has not clearly explained the U.S. position on military action in Venezuela versus 26 percent who say it has. A poll from 10 days ago by Reuters showing Republicans favor drug boat strikes, 58 to 24 percent. Three quarters of Democrats oppose them. President Trump on Friday announcing the immediate termination of temporary protected status or TPS for Somalis in Minnesota. TPS is a federal program granting legal status and work authorization to people from unstable countries. The announcement following a new report from the Manhattan Institute's
Starting point is 00:16:01 City Journal, headline, quote, the largest funder of al-Shabaab is the Minnesota taxpayer. Al-Shabaab is an Al-Qaeda-aligned militant Islamist organization based in Somalia. From the report, quote, at least 28 fraud scandals have surfaced since Minnesota Governor Tim Walz was elected governor in 2019. Most of the large-scale fraud rings, according to two former FBI officials who spoke with City Journal have been perpetrated by members
Starting point is 00:16:30 of the Somali community. The Somalis accused of taking millions in welfare payouts and funneling it back to Somalia and in some cases to Al-Shabaab. A retired Minnesota Joint Terrorism Task Force official telling City Journal, quote,
Starting point is 00:16:45 for every dollar that is transferred from the Twin Cities back to Somalia, Al-Shabaab is, is taking a cut of it. Mr. Trump, posting to Truth Social, quote, Minnesota under Governor Tim Walls is a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity. Somali gangs are terrorizing the people of that great state, and billions of dollars are missing. Send them back to where they came from. It's over. Governor Walls, a Democrat who ran for vice president on Kamala Harris's ticket last year,
Starting point is 00:17:13 responding to President Trump's announcement Friday, posting to X, quote, It's not surprising that the president has chosen to broadly target an entire community. This is what he does to change the subject. The most famous member of Minnesota's Somali community, Democrat congresswoman Ilan Omar, posting to X on Friday, quote, I am a citizen, and so are the majority of Somalis in America. Good luck celebrating a policy change that really doesn't have much impact on the Somalis you love to hate. We are here to stay. CBS News reporting there are 705 total Somali immigrants in the U.S. under the TPS program,
Starting point is 00:17:50 a small fraction of the more than 42,000 foreign-born Somalis living in Minnesota. Any Somali in the U.S. as a permanent resident or even as a citizen who commits fraud could potentially be subjected to a denaturalization process or, more likely, could be prosecuted for fraud. Although President Trump's announcement said the temporary protected status would be terminated immediately. Legal experts say the Somalis are entitled to 60 days notice, meaning March 17th is the earliest date Somalia's protected status may end. And that'll do it for your AM update. I'm Megan Kelly.
