Starting point is 00:00:00 Do you ever sit down to practice or work and feel completely stuck? Like the frustration is taking over and you just can't find your way forward? Well, you're not alone. In today's episode, we're diving into a simple, powerful way to reset when overwhelm hits and get back to feeling focused and in control. You're listening to the Mind Over Finger podcast, and this is episode 211. Welcome to the Mind Over Finger podcast, where we dive into the world of mindful music making, peak performance, and crafting a purpose-driven life and career. I'm your host, violinist,
Starting point is 00:00:44 certified performance and life coach for musicians, and your guide to unlocking your full potential, Dr. René-Paul Gaultier. Today, I want to share a powerful tool that I've been using with clients for some time. And it's been incredibly helpful for them and for me when I use it. And I thought it would be a perfect way to wrap up this year and prepare for 2025. In the Music Mastery Experience, 2025 is going to be the year of confidence. We're going to explore what it takes to show up confidently in every part of our lives, on stage, as parents, as colleagues, and as artists. Confidence is the foundation that allows us to fully embrace our potential. And this tool I'm sharing with you today is one small but impactful way to reclaim it
Starting point is 00:01:35 when we feel like it's slipping away. Let's talk about those moments we've all experienced. You're in the practice room and nothing seems to be working the way you want. The results aren't there, frustration sets in, and suddenly your mind begins spiraling with negativity. And you've been there. You know what happens. Sometimes we stick with it, but it's agony. And sometimes we just give up and walk away. Or maybe you're in a rehearsal and the overwhelm takes over. You feel powerless and disconnected from the skills and focus you know you have.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Well, these are the moments where the power reset ritual can make all the difference for you. the power reset ritual what is that you're asking me well let's talk about that the power reset ritual came about during a coaching session with a client who was often feeling completely stuck and overwhelmed in the practice room now we all have a lot of tools that we can use to self-coach ourselves to getting into a better headspace but sometimes it's just easier said than done oftentimes right and that's because it's really hard to fight strong feelings with logic or intellect in fact that rarely works so my client needed something simple and intuitive to help them get back on track when that happens so we came up with this ritual together and it works so well
Starting point is 00:03:11 for them that I started sharing it with other clients who've been in the same boat and they've all told me how much they love it. They use it not just in their musical work, but in so many other areas of their lives to stay grounded and focused. It's become their go-to tool for dealing with those tough moments when things feel out of control, when you feel disempowered. So this ritual is designed to help you stop that spiral, reclaim your focus, and reconnect with your power. It's quick. It's simple. You're going to be able to do it in less than two minutes. And with practice, it's going to become second nature. It's going to be your go-to tool for resetting your mindset when you need it most. I call it the power reset ritual because that's
Starting point is 00:04:01 exactly what it does. It resets your sense of power when you feel like it's been lost. it's going to help you move from a place of overwhelm and disempowerment to a place of clarity focus and action all right let me talk you through how it works whenever we need to process powerful emotions i always tell my clients the same thing first the body then the heart then the head first the body then the heart then the head and that's what we're going to do here We're going to start with the body, then we're going to move to the heart, and we're going to finish with the head. Are you ready?
Starting point is 00:04:44 Let's go. The first step is to breathe. Reconnect with your breath. It's such a simple act, but it's incredibly effective. You can breathe in a way that feels natural to you, or you can try this pattern that I find very helpful. you're going to inhale for four counts hold gently for four counts and exhale for six counts then you're going to repeat this as many times as you need to feel calmer and more centered
Starting point is 00:05:16 this breathing technique activates your parasympathetic nervous system and that's going to reduce stress and it's going to quiet the mental chatter and as you focus on your breath notice how your mind begins to settle once you've connected with your breath the next step step number two is to ground yourself physically right first body bring your attention to your body and your physical connection to the present moment be where your feet are feel your feet on the ground feel your back against the chair or whatever surface is supporting you and do a quick body scan notice where you are how you feel and the physical sensations you're experiencing this grounding process is going to bring you back to the here and now and that's going to interrupt
Starting point is 00:06:14 any spiraling thoughts you're having from this grounded place we're going to move to the heart using our past experiences. So the next step, step number three, is to visualize a win. I want you to think of a moment when you felt confident, capable, and successful. And I want you to experience it as vividly as you can. Fill your heart with this memory. what did it feel like what were you thinking what were you doing what sounds or sensations were around you and let that memory remind you of what you're capable of this step is so powerful because it redirects your focus to your strengths and your abilities and it's going to help you reconnect with your inner power. In your heart, you're going to feel capable, confident, and
Starting point is 00:07:18 empowered. And when the heart is going, it's time to get the head on board. So step number four is to set an intention for the work ahead. I want you to choose a phrase or mantra that resonates with you and it's going to give you direction. It could be very simple. Something like, I trust myself. I am focused and calm. One thing at a time. Every action makes a difference. I'm a problem solver. Or anything that brings you to a place of focus and intent. That intention is going to act as an anchor and it's going to be a guiding thought that centers your energy and clears the noise. That intention reminds you of your purpose and it's going to keep you on track. Number five is to decide on the next best step. And that is step singular. One step.
Starting point is 00:08:20 I want you to ask yourself, what's the one small thing I can do right now to move forward? And this is critical because it shifts your focus from everything you need to fix and everything you need to do to one manageable, actionable step. It could be working on a single measure, refining a shift, getting one phrase in tune, or memorizing a specific passage. Whatever it is, choose one thing to do, take that action, and when that's done, move on to the next, and then the next, and then the next, and so on and so forth. And before you know it, you've accomplished so much. This approach is going to build beautiful momentum for you and it's going to give you a sense of control back.
Starting point is 00:09:18 Now, why does the power reset ritual work so well? First, the breathing calms your nervous system and it clears your mind. Then grounding yourself in your body stops the spiraling of negative thoughts and brings you back to the present moment. The visualization is going to redirect your focus and remind you of your capabilities. And it's going to reinforce your confidence. Setting an intention is going to clear the mental clutter and align your energy with what matters most. And finally, choosing the next step is going to simplify your path forward. It's going to help you take action without feeling overwhelmed. You will feel empowered. It's easy to see how this can transform a difficult moment in the practice room or a rehearsal or maybe even high pressure
Starting point is 00:10:16 performance. By focusing on your breath, grounding yourself, visualizing success, setting an intention and taking one small action, you move from a place of doubt and disempowerment to one of clarity, focus, and empowerment. I encourage you to try this today. The next time you find yourself overwhelmed or stuck, whether in a practice session, rehearsal, or in everyday life, take a few minutes to go through this ritual.
