1-512-580-9305. Once again, 1-512-580-9305. Today, we're going to be talking about 10 things that
successful people do that unsuccessful people do not do. So you're going to want to go ahead and
grab out your pen and paper so we can dive into this. We you're going to want to go ahead and grab out
your pen and paper so we can dive into this. We're just going to go at it. Here we go. Number one
is you focus to be successful on your productivity, not being busy. So there's a big difference
between being productive and being busy. And I feel like a lot of my life, I spent my time being
busy, just doing things, but none of them were
actually checking things off the list. And so one of the things that I recommend for people is to
pay attention to the needle moving activities and ask yourself, for instance, if you're a business
owner, one of the best questions to ask yourself is this question, is what I'm doing right now,
$10 per hour work, or is this $1,000 per hour work? And if it's not $1,000 per hour work, it's not
moving the needle in your business as it should. Now, if you're all by yourself, you don't have
any employees, are you going to have to do some things that you don't necessarily want to do at
some point? Absolutely, 100%. But you have to realize the majority of your time should be doing
things that are needle moving activities. And one thing that you can always ask yourself as well
when you're being busy versus productive or to see if you're being busy versus being productive is to ask yourself
the question, is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goals? Just think
about that. Is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goals? If it's
getting you further from your goals, stop it immediately and go and do something that's
going to get you closer to your goals. And when I talk about being busy versus being productive,
another thing that I see a lot of people do is they'll make these massive to-do lists.
And then what they'll do is they'll crank out the easy things first,
telling themselves that what they're doing is they're trying to get as much done as possible
on their to-do list.
I'll tell you this.
I have a to-do list every single day.
And the majority of the stuff on that to-do list doesn't get done.
But what always gets done are the most important things on that list. And so what I always recommend is if you are a to-do list every single day and the majority of the stuff on that to-do list doesn't get done. But what always gets done are the most important things on that list. And so what I
always recommend is if you are a to-do list type of person, make your to-do list and then go through
and circle your top three and rank them number one, number two, number three, and don't do anything
until number one is done. Then once number one is done, go to number two and don't do anything
until number two is done. And then once number two is done, then you can go to number three.
And then don't do anything until number three is done.
That is the difference of being productive versus being busy.
As you are cranking off and checking off the majority of your top priority,
biggest things that need to be done in your to-do list.
So the first thing that they do is they focus on being productive, not being busy.
Second thing that they do as well,
and obviously this isn't for every single person, we're kind of generalizing here,
is take care of their bodies. One of the things that I see some people do when they try to start
a business, they try to become successful, is they work crazy hours and they work until 11 o'clock
or 1 o'clock and then they wake up at 5 o'clock because Gary Vaynerchuk said you don't need to
sleep or whatever it is, but they take care of their bodies. They take care of the sleep that they need. Like for me,
it's a non-negotiable. I don't get anything less than seven and a half hours of sleep. If I do,
I don't feel good and I don't feel like I'm as productive. And so I've learned that, hey,
if I'm not falling asleep, then I'm going to need to move some stuff in my schedule. I'm going to
need to move some stuff in the morning because I need to make sure that I get the sleep that I need to. So take care of your sleep. What are other
ways to do it as well? What about the food you're putting into your body? You got to be very
cognizant of the food you're putting in your body because it's either fueling you up or it's burning
you down by just taking all of your energy. Sometimes you have a big lunch and then you can
feel that big lunch. You're like, man, I feel really tired. I need a coffee or I need a nap
or something. That's not going to help you with getting shit done. And if you want to be successful, you got to be able to get some shit
done. And so they take care of their bodies. That's the second thing they do. Enough sleep,
the proper fuel, enough water, not a whole lot of sugar so that their blood sugar doesn't spike
and then immediately drop. You've got to pay attention to what your body's trying to tell you.
And that's a super important thing here. The third thing that they do is they typically wake up earlier. And the
reason why is because a lot of people have kids and a lot of kids take up a lot of time. And so
when you wake up earlier, you have time to focus on yourself. And I'm not talking about focusing on
like waking up just so you can go immediately to your emails. I'm talking about waking up earlier
so that you can have your you time. You know. It's not selfish to be focused on yourself because when you become better, everyone else
around you becomes better as well. And so they wake up earlier so that they can have time to
themselves. You can have time to meditate. You can have time to journal. You can have time to plan
out your day. You can have time to read. The average CEO reads 60 books per year. When do
they get time to do it?
Well, usually in the mornings or usually in the evenings.
And so you think about that and you're like,
man, the average CEO reads 60 books per year.
How many books did I read in the past 12 months?
And these are some of the busiest people in the world.
And so you've got to think about that.
They wake up earlier so they can focus on themselves.
They can focus on what they want their day to look like.
And then after a couple hours, family wakes up, spouse wakes up, whatever it is, they can dive into their business. But they wake up earlier
specifically so they can have time to develop themselves. That's number three. Number four
is they develop a great network. This is one of the biggest things that I think people talk about
some, but they don't talk about enough, is any bad apple needs to be gone because they're slowing
you down.
They're literally like a parachute that's holding you back as you're trying to run your race of
your life. And so one of the things that people will do in your life is they will propel you
forward or they will hold you back. And I'm not saying that you have to just get rid of people
in your life and never see them ever again, but just be aware of if somebody's on your side,
if they want the best for you, if they're trying to help you succeed, if they're somebody who motivates you. Like one
of the things that I've been lucky enough is my best friend, Dean, and I have been best friends
since 2006. And he wants to be successful as much as I do. So we've been driving each other for the
past 15, 16 years now to try to be the best that we possibly can. And so when you do that and you
have a great network of people, I'm not saying it has to be a massive network. You just have people that inspire you to be better,
that want the best for you, that celebrate your success and are driving you and challenging you
to be better at all points in time. And so look at the people around you and ask yourself,
are these people supporting my journey that I'm on and where I'm trying to get to?
Or are they kind of like a parachute that's holding me back on my way to success? Develop a great network. If you don't have a great network,
take some time over the next few years and start to build one. Like when I first moved to Austin,
I didn't know anybody in Austin. But over years, I've developed this network of like, man, I really
love these people. And I can tell that a lot of my success came because I was around people that
just made me think bigger than
I was thinking for myself. And so definitely develop a great network. The fifth thing that
they do is they see failure as a stepping stone. And failure is not final. That's the thing that
you have to realize about that. Failure is not final until you give up. And failure is a function.
It's a function. It's something that happens and you can learn from it and get better.
And so if you look at some of the most successful people
in the world,
what's crazy is they failed many, many times.
I have many, many,
before I ever did a million dollars
in sales in my business in a year,
I had failed at multiple businesses before.
I lived off of pasta for two months
because I was so broke.
I almost lost my car
because I was five months behind on my car payment. That was my very first business. And I ran it into the ground. It didn't
go the way that I wanted it to. But I didn't see it as like, I'm not going to be a good business
owner because of the fact that I failed. It was like, oh, this one just didn't work out.
And then the business that I currently have, there was a whole lot of failures.
What could be seen as failures by other people. But for me, it was like, this is what I'm going
to do. I'm positive this is what I want to do. And so this is just a stepping stone. And so when you have
failures, don't allow this to be something that holds you back. Just be somebody who's like,
you know what? All right, this is just the universe trying to guide me in another way.
It's trying to show me that this isn't necessarily working. And so you have to see failure as a
stepping stone in your life on the journey to success. Number six is that they say no more than they say yes.
Hey, everybody. Fall is here. And if you're looking for a great drink to bring to your
family events or any of the get-togethers that doesn't have alcohol in it, you should check out
Huzzah. Huzzah is a seltzer water that gives you all of the benefits of probiotics and a seltzer
that tastes like fall. And I'm not a big drinker, so usually when I like
to go to family events or get-togethers, I usually drink something like Huzzah because it's the
perfect drink to bring to a party with you. Huzzah's non-alcoholic seltzer is full of gut-friendly
probiotics with 15 calories or less per can, so you can enjoy every sip without the guilt. So you
can pump up your senses with three vibrant flavors,
all low on sugar and calories.
All of them taste amazing.
There's raspberry lemon, there's juicy pear,
and then there's strawberry hibiscus,
which has ripe strawberries with a tropical backdrop.
And it's just three grams of sugar and 15 calories.
So get ready to fill your fridge
by stocking up on Huzzah Probiotic Seltzer

Hey, let's face it. Many kids are not thrilled by math until we connect to the things that they
already care about and enjoy. That's the magic of ID Tech's instructors. They make abstract concepts relatable and help students latch onto math and other STEM subjects
as actual interests. Not only that, but they'll also help your kids fill learning gaps,
explore topics not covered in school, advance quickly, and have fun doing it. And right now,
ID Tech is offering a great deal. You can get started with one-on-one tutoring lessons for just $49
or save $150 on their weekly small group semesters.
And they now offer a variety of math homework help options
so your kids can stress less and celebrate more
when they ace those assignments and tests.

They say no more than they say yes. I know some of you and I've worked with a lot of business owners, thousands of business owners across many different industries. And there's a lot of yes
people out there. There's a lot of people pleasers. And I'm not saying there's something wrong with
that, but you have to realize as a human, if you're going to build whatever it is
that you're wanting to build, you have a limited amount of time. And you've got to learn to start
saying no to things more than you say yes to things. You've got to look at something and say,
okay, does this thing support me in my journey for what I'm trying to build in my life?
Is this aligned with where I'm trying to go? And at the same time, is this taking away from my time
that I'm trying to build my business? This same time, is this taking away from my time that I'm trying to
build my business? This could be many different things. This could be another business opportunity.
One of the things that entrepreneurs have is we have SOS, shiny object syndrome. We see,
I would say there's a million ways to make a million dollars. We say, oh, this thing. Oh,
there's this thing. Oh, there's this thing. Oh, there's this thing. You have to learn to say
no more than you say yes. This also comes down sometimes to people trying to steal your time.
You know, one of the things that's interesting about people who work from home is that we
get hit up all the time until we tell people to stop.
We get hit up by people all the time.
They're like, hey, can you do this for me?
Hey, I know that you're at home.
Are you able to do this?
Like I have people who I've coached over the years and they're like, well, yeah, no, I
wasn't able to get in my calls that I wanted to get in because I had to go do something
for my mom. And I'm like, what is that thing? And they're like, oh, I had to go pick up her my calls that I wanted to get in because I had to go do something for my mom.
And I'm like, what is that thing?
And they're like, oh, I had to go pick up her laundry.
I was like, is it an emergency?
And they're like, no.
I'm like, could you have done it another time?
They're like, yeah, I could have.
I'm like, so what you're really doing
is you're allowing yourself to divert your energy
into going and getting laundry
instead of actually doing the hard stuff in your business
that's actually building you to success.
I'm not saying don't help your mom.
That's definitely not what I'm saying. I'm just saying be smart of when your
time is being used and learn how to say no more than you say yes. No, mom, I can't do it right
now, but I can do it later. Is that okay? Don't be a yes person. Help your mom. Of course, I'm not
saying don't help your mom. Help your mom. Help people the way that they need to be helped, all
of that stuff. But at the same time, you have to be very aware of when you should say no and when you should say yes. And so successful people, one of the things
that I see more than anything else is that they know where they're trying to go. They know that
they have a limited amount of time this earth. They know they have a limited amount of time every
single day. And so they get used to saying no more than they say yes, because there's a lot of things
that are going to come into your awareness. They are going to come into your mind, into your vicinity, that's going to steal time away from you and take you away from that. And so you've
got to get really good at saying no to anything that doesn't line up with where you're trying to
go. And so they say no more than they say yes. The seventh thing is that they constantly learn.
One of the things that's super interesting to me is that the most successful people that I know,
they are people who you would never expect that they are when you get into a room with them and
other people. They ask more questions than anybody else. The two people that I know that have the,
well, two out of the three people that I know that are the most successful, I'm talking about
over $100 million in net worth, always carry a journal with them. It's really kind of crazy
where they always carry a journal because they always have ideas. They always have people at their meeting. They ask a million
questions. I said something about this a couple months ago on a podcast, but I'm part of a
mastermind. And in this mastermind, the guy who's in there, he sold his business a few years ago for
a billion dollars and nobody else in the business but him and his wife. And so he sold it for a
billion dollars. This guy took more notes in this mastermind than anybody else. He acted like he knew nothing.
And he was just a sponge. He asked questions. He wrote things down. He's just constantly
wanting to learn and constantly wanting to grow. And so one of the things that I've realized
of some of the most successful people is they're constantly wanting to learn. They're not the type
of people who are the the I know it all.
You know, it's really interesting
that the most successful people that you meet
are not the I know it all type people,
but some of the most unsuccessful people that you meet
are the I know it all type people.
And so they're constantly learning,
they're constantly seeing themselves as sponges,
and they see the journey of life
as something that they're constantly working in
and trying to become better at.
And so they'll take notes, they'll ask questions, they'll put themselves into rooms. They won't act like they're the
smartest person. They don't care about how much money they have or how much success they have.
They want to learn and grow. And that's just a natural part of what it is that they're building.
So number seven is that they're constantly learning. Number eight is that they set goals.
And there's a study that was done. You may have heard me talk about this in the past,
but there was a study that was done in the 70s
for Harvard graduates with an MBA.
And they found out that only 3% of them
wrote their goals down.
3% wrote their goals down, not had goals,
but wrote them down.
And they followed up 10 years later.
And what was interesting is that 3%
was more successful than the other 97% combined.
The 3% who wrote their goals down in the 70s,
graduated with an MBA from Harvard, were more successful than the 97% that did not write their
goals down. And so you have to ask yourself, do you think that it's important to figure out what
your goals are and to write your goals down? Absolutely. That's how it becomes real and
physical in this universe.
And the one thing I say all the time is that when something's going on in your head,
you've got to put it down on paper. Because when it's in your head, it's abstract. There's no plan.
There's nothing there. You've got to put it down on paper. And once you put it down on paper, you can start making some moves, start shifting things around in your life.
And so if you're not setting your goals with pen and paper and putting a deadline
and a quantitative amount of whatever it is you're trying to do, quantitative, qualitative,
and have a deadline, you're not setting goals correctly. So you've got to make sure, and I did
an episode on how to set goals and how to accomplish your goals, the six steps to setting
goals a few months ago. You can go back and listen to that one. But you've got to set goals and figure out where you're trying to go in your life. So number eight is that they set goals.
Number nine is that they make decisions and execute quickly. There's no reason to sit around
and think about things. They make decisions very fast and they change their decisions very slowly.
Really interesting thing that I've found with people as well is that there's a lot of people that are not successful that are very indecisive. Oh,
am I doing this right? And they keep asking themselves questions. Is this right? Am I not
right? Am I in the right industry? Am I not in the right industry? Should I be doing something
different? Should I not be doing something different? One of the things about successful
people that I've found is that they make a decision. When they make a decision, they're
locked on and they don't change that freaking decision very easily.
So the indecisiveness that you might have in your life is something that's holding you back. So you've got to look at it and say, is this something that's holding me back from creating the life
that I want? I've got to make a decision. I've got to figure out what this is and I've got to
execute quickly. So you make your decision and then you just get off your ass and you freaking
go. That is one of the things and you've got to train your action-taking muscle to get up and go and get up and go and get up and go.
And it's just, that's part of you. That's in your DNA. That's what you're going to do from now on.
You've got to make decisions quickly, and then you've got to get off your ass and you've got
to execute very quickly as well. There's no reason to sit around and think about things.
Thinking, a lot of... Now, believe me, I love thinking. I love it. And I reason to sit around and think about things. Thinking, a lot of, now, believe me, I love thinking.
I love it.
And I love to sit around and be philosophical
and be in quiet and all that stuff.
But thinking doesn't get you any closer to your goals.
So if success, whatever success means to you as well,
I didn't preface this episode
by talking about success and what it is,
but success means something different to everybody else.
It's not just money that we're talking about here.
It could be happiness or freedom
or being able to travel the world with your children or whatever it is
that you want. But success, in order to get success, you've got to take action. You can't
think your way to success. I've never seen somebody do it. I've never just seen somebody
think whatever it is that they want into their life. There's got to be some level of action
into it. I love the law of attraction.
I love the whole idea with it. I believe in it. But one of the things that you have to realize is you have to actually get up off your ass and do something in order to actually attract what
it is that you want. It doesn't just fly into the universe from flying to your life from the
universe from all different areas of the galaxy or whatever it is. So number nine, you have to
make decisions and execute quickly. And number 10 is they consistently test their boundaries. They are not comfortable ever.
They tend to push themselves, what they think they can do, what they think they can do,
what they think they can do. They push their boundaries past what they see possible.
And I'm not saying that they go and just like, I'm afraid of heights. I'm going to go skydiving.
I'm not talking about that. What I'm talking about is that they have a very good idea
of where their comfort zone is.
And they're constantly trying to just push a little bit past,
a little bit past, a little bit past that comfort zone,
a little bit more.
And so they constantly test their boundaries
with whatever it is that they're doing.
You know, they can test their boundaries at the gym.
They can test their boundaries in their business,
in their communication, in whatever makes them.
And when I say test their boundaries, when they feel fear, they do it anyways. A lot of
people, and I always say that, you know, we think, oh yeah, successful people don't feel fear. We hear
things like, oh, our fearless leader, John, you know, that's not the truth. The most successful
people I know, they feel fear all of the time, But at the same time, they don't let that thing hold them back.
They know that fear is just the boundary for where they feel comfortable.
And so if they push past that fear, they build a new version of themselves,
a new version of comfortable.
And so they constantly test their boundaries of what it is that they feel comfortable with.
And they're always trying to make themselves uncomfortable.
Become very comfortable being uncomfortable.
That's part of success.
Because if you are in your comfort zone,
you're not going to get more than what you already have.
Because your comfort zone is where you already are.
So you should constantly feel like,
am I good enough?
Am I smart enough?
Am I pretty enough?
I don't know if I can go up and give this talk.
I know so many friends that are super successful,
but they're just as worried as the average person.
The only difference is they feel the fear
and they do it anyways.
So those are the 10 keys that I know
of people that are successful in what they do.
Number one, they focus on being productive,
not being busy.
Number two, they take care of themselves
and they take care of their bodies.
Number three, they wake up earlier to work on themselves.
Number four, they develop a great network.
Number five, they see failure as a stepping stone. Number six, they say no more than they say yes. Number seven,
they constantly are learning. Number eight is they set goals and write them down. Number nine
is they make decisions and execute quickly. And number 10, they consistently test their boundaries.
