Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast, one of the top-rated motivational podcasts in the world.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I come out with a short, to-the-point, no-BS podcast designed to transform you from who you are today into who you want to be. There's no fluff here, just life-changing
content. My name is Rob Dial, and the podcast starts now.
Today, what we're going to be going over is talking about, you know, we talked a little
bit about regret a couple episodes ago. We talked about hard work. We talked about those types of
things. And I want to share a quote with you. And I want to talk about what will haunt you when you
get older. And this is a quote. I'll explain it to you once I get into it. But the quote is from
Mark Twain. And it says, 20 years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones that you did. So throw off the
bow lines, sail away from the safe harbor, catch the trade winds in your sails, explore, dream,
discover. And as you get older, the reason why I wanted to go over this is because this is
something that I... This is one of the reasons why I started my group coaching was because I know that most people have
dreams. They have aspirations. They have things they want to do with their life, but there's
stuff holding them back. And I wanted to start the group coaching in order to help people be a
little bit of the push to activate everybody into taking the first step to their dreams,
be able to be there to support them and help them and all of these things.
And as you get older,
you're gonna find that it's rarely the things
that you did do that will come back to haunt you.
More than anything else,
the thing that's gonna haunt you the most
is the things that you did not do.
That's what's gonna come back to haunt you.
And I remember when I was contemplating back in 2012,
actually back in 2011,
when I first was contemplating going on a vacation for three
months and backpacking Europe, I remember reading this quote and I was deciding whether or not to
go. And I saw this quote and with this quote decided 100% the next summer, which is the summer
of 2012, I am in, I'm going to go for three months to Europe. I'm going to backpack. I'm going to go
by myself. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do, but I'm going to have the best time of my
possible life. And it was this quote that made me make my final decision because I didn't want to
get older. I didn't want to be 75 years old and go, you know what? I wish that I would have taken
those three months and traveled to Europe. I wish that I would have been able to do that.
And I made the decision at that point in
time after reading this quote that I was going to quit my job when the summer came around and I was
going to save up as much as I possibly could before then. And I was going to travel to Europe
and it was the most absolutely amazing 84 days of my life. Was it scary because I'd never been
over there and traveled by myself? Hell yeah, it was scary. But that's part of the fun. That's
what life is about. Life is about making the scary and the fun stuff, scary fun and also the unknown fun
as well. And as I was preparing, I kept telling everyone, thinking, you know, I kept saying,
I'm going to be going to Europe this summer. I'm going to be in Europe this summer. And everyone
kept saying, what are you going to do? You're going to have to quit your job. And I kept thinking
that people, some of the older people would be like, you know, that's a bad idea. You have a really good paying job. There's no reason
to quit your job. This is back in 2012. So this is only a couple of years into the recession.
And I thought people would be like, that's a terrible idea, Rob. You should just, you know,
stay with the good paying job that you have. And for the entire next eight months, when I was
planning up to it, everybody that I told, not one person said to me, that's a bad idea. You shouldn't go. And I'm talking like 30, 40
older people that I had been speaking to. I told them and not one of them said it was a bad idea.
They either said, I did it. I traveled to Europe. I did that. It was the most amazing thing that
I've ever done. And I loved it. Or they said, you know what? I wish I would have done that when I was younger. So I asked you, what are you on the
fence about? If you're younger, are you contemplating going to college or maybe dropping out of college?
Are you contemplating going to Europe exactly like I did? Are you, if you're older, are you
contemplating, you know know leaving your job or
breaking up with somebody or getting a divorce or moving to a new city that you've never been to
before or maybe possibly even starting your own company or maybe you just want to ask somebody
out what is it that you're on the fence about there's only a couple reasons why somebody would
not go for something that they truly believe and they truly love it. And those things are usually fears. The fear of what others will think,
being judged by other people, the fear of change, the fear of the unknown, the fear of failing,
the fear of success. Those are the things that hold people back. And the problem is,
here's the deal. You only get one one life so stop waiting around for yours to
change you need to be the one that makes the changes because you're the only one to do it
you need to be the one that decides that you're going to go on the adventures
you need to be the one that's going to take control of your life because life is going to
be full of change it's going to be full of failure and successes and unknowns and judgy people that's
just the way that it goes but you don't want to get to the end of failure and successes and unknowns and judgy people. That's just the way that it goes.
But you don't want to get to the end of your life and regret that you wish you would have
done something because in 20 years from now, you're either going to be super excited about
the fact that you did go for that change or you're going to be depressed about the fact
and regret the fact that you didn't make those changes.
Because most people don't do the things they really want because they're afraid of all
of those things.
But in the long run,
the only thing that you're really going to regret is not pursuing your desires, not pursuing your dreams, not going and traveling, not asking that person out, not starting your business. All of
those things are the things that you're going to regret. And like the quote implies, the sea
is unpredictable. Life is unpredictable. But if you stay in your safe harbor, nothing will come of
your life. You must make the changes. You must deal with the unknown and successes and the failures
and all of those different things. You must take the risks and do the things that scare you
because those are what create the best memories. The things that scare you are always the things
that make the best memories. Nobody's ever sitting at a bar with their friends saying,
hey, remember that time when we stayed at home and we did nothing? That was one of the best memories of my life. Nobody says that. It's always like,
hey, do you remember that one time when this unexpected thing happened? We almost died,
but we had a whole big laugh out of it. And that's what's exciting about life. Not sitting
at home and not doing anything and not making changes to your life. It's usually from the
risky or the unknown or the scary things.
And so, like I said, the reason why I started my group coaching is because I wanted to be the start of the catalyst for most people to make that change. I know some people listen to the
podcast and then they don't do anything with the information that they have. I know a lot of people
do a ton of stuff. But for people who wanted a little bit extra support, I thought, hey,
I'll start this group coaching. And this is something that could definitely affect people in a great way. And so for you, whatever it is,
20 years from now, you'll be more disappointed by the things that you don't do
than the ones that you did do. So throw off your bow lines, sail away from the safe harbor,
catch the trade winds in your sails, and explore and dream and discover.
And with that, I'm going to leave you the same way I leave you every single episode.
Make it your mission today to make somebody else's day better.
I appreciate you and I hope that you have an amazing day.
