Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor podcast. I'm your host Rob Dial and if you have
not yet done so hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast episode. And if
you're out there and you listen to this podcast and you do not give us ratings and reviews and
we've given you some sort of value I would appreciate if you would give us a rating review on Apple Podcasts or iTunes, because the more people that give us
great reviews, the more that iTunes shows our stuff to people, which means the more that this
grows and the more lives we impact. So I would greatly, greatly appreciate if you could do that
for us. Today, we're going to be talking about the six steps to become successful. So I tried to boil
it down and try to make it as simple as possible for you, for you to become successful. So I tried to boil it down and try to make it as simple as
possible for you to become successful, whatever that means for you. And so we're going to go
through it. The first thing, number one, is to define success, which goes back to what I was
just saying to you. When I say successful, when I say successful, it might be something that
success might mean something different for me than it does for you than it does for somebody else. And so what you really need to do is define what
success is. Do you even know? This, I think, tends to stress people out, especially even when people
become quote unquote successful, is because they've never clearly defined what it is that they want,
what it is that they're working for, and what success means to them, they never know if they actually get it. So how will you know when you become successful?
What does it mean to you? So for me, the word success means that I have the ability to do what
I want, when I want, with who I want. That's it. If I can do whatever it is that I want to,
whenever it is that I want to, with whoever it is that I want to, then at that point, I see it as success.
So it might mean the same for you.
It might mean something different.
What is success to you?
Is it all of the money that you could possibly handle?
All right, well, what does that mean?
Is it $5 million?
Is it $10 million?
Is it $100 million?
Is it happiness?
Is it peace? Is it joy? Is it 10 million? Is it a hundred million? Is it happiness? Is it peace? Is it joy? Is it
love? Is it complete freedom? What does it mean for you? The first thing is that if you're going
to get quote unquote successful, you need to figure out what success means to you. Because
if you don't see it, it's going to be really hard to hit that target. I use this example all of the time. But if you and the number one archer in the world stand up
next to each other and you shoot whatever the target is with a bow and arrow, they're going
to beat you every single time. But if you blindfold the number one archer in the entire world and spin
them around so they don't know what direction they're shooting in, you're going to beat them
every single time simply because you can see it. Not because you're better, but because you can see the actual target itself. And so you've got to clearly define what does success mean to me?
And what is the goal that I'm shooting for? Because when you can see the goal,
you're much more likely to hit the goal. You can't hit a target that you don't see.
It's going to be really freaking hard to get there. And so the first thing I want you to do
is if you're going to become successful is to take a pen and paper. Don't put it on your phone. Don't try to figure
it out in your head. Get a pen and paper, old school pen and paper, and write down what does
success mean to me and clearly define what that thing is. So that's step number one. Step number
two is to create a clear plan for success.
Well, now that I know what success means to me,
let's just use money as an example because money is just an easy number to work off of.
We can use it because it's quantitative.
Let's say success to me means a whole bunch of things,
but $10 million in net worth, okay?
When I'm at $10 million in net worth, I have made it.
I am at the point in my life where I want to be.
Good to go.
Okay, beautiful.
Well, at least I've got something to shoot for.
Now that I've got something to shoot for
and I know it with a clear and definite number,
now I can start to plan for it
and I can start to put things in.
And the way I like to explain it is it's like a GPS.
I live in Austin, Texas,
but if I were to have to make it to,
you know, a friend's house in Dallas,
I know Dallas is north of here.
I have no idea where he lives in Dallas.
Dallas has millions and millions of people
and millions of houses.
It's going to be really hard to find his house
if I just go, all right, I'm going to hop on the road.
I'm going to head to Dallas
and I'm going to head to Joe's house.
It's going to be hard to get to his house.
Why? Because there's no real definite plan of how to get there. But if I say, Joe, what's your
address? Send it to me. I put it in my phone, put in my GPS. It'll take me directly to his house.
That's what I would like my goals to be like. Do you want your goals to be like wandering around,
just trying to figure it out? Or do you want your goals to be like, this is a clear and
definite plan of exactly what it is that I need to do to get to what I call quote unquote success.
So if we're saying $10 million is success, then I say, okay, now that I know that's the number I'm
shooting for, by what date do I want to hit that by? I want to hit it within 10 years. Okay. That
means I need to make on average about a million dollars per year. And obviously I'll start making
more and more as I get better. So I need to come up with a plan and write it down with pen and paper so that I can actually
get there.
I need to set my GPS.
That's what I need to do.
So number two is to have a clear and definite plan for it.
Number three, this is something I don't hear people talk about almost ever, is to plan
out your pitfalls.
Plan out how you typically mess up. That's what I want you
to do. Plan out how you typically mess up. We all have pitfalls that we fall into. Maybe it's
negative self-talk for you. Maybe it's sleeping in late. Maybe it's, you know, coming up short of
your goals. I don't know. It's different for everybody. But when you know what your pitfalls are, you can then make a plan whenever you fall into those
pitfalls. If your goal is to make $10 million over the next 10 years, I don't think you're
going to have 3,650 perfect days. You're going to have some days that are hard from A to B.
You're going to have some days that are super hard. You're not going to have perfect days. So
what I want to do, as well as writing out the GPS
and figuring out how I'm going to get from point A to point B,
is number two, I'm going to write out my plan
for when I notice myself doing X, Y, Z.
So let's say, for instance, that negative self-talk is something that I do
and that's something that's a pitfall of mine that I need to get past.
Perfect.
Now I'm going to make a plan that next time I talk need to get past. Perfect. Now I'm gonna make a plan
that next time I talk negatively to myself,
I already have a plan of how to work through it.
Perfect.
So now next time I find myself there,
I'm like, oh my God,
I see myself in this negative spiral,
this downward spiral of negative self-talk.
What do I need to do?
Oh yeah, I've already got a plan for this.
What I need to do is I need to reach into my phone, scroll back to one of my photos of my phone, which is my favorites,
and it's a list of all of the things that I've accomplished in my life that make me amazing.
It could be big things. It could be small things. I used to do this with my clients. It was called
an awesome list. I would say you have to come up with 100 things that is awesome about you.
It could be the biggest accomplishment. It could be the smallest.
You could have gotten fifth place in a third grade spelling bee. I want that shit to be on the paper.
And what you want to do is when you notice that negative self-talk come in, you look at that,
that photo of you that you wrote down of the 100 things on your awesome list, and you force
yourself to read through every single one of them. Well, that sounds like a pretty damn good plan, doesn't it? If negative self-talk is a typical
pitfall, it's definitely going to come back in. 100%, probably multiple times a day.
So now I can plan ahead and say, okay, well, I'm going to read my awesome list
anytime that I notice myself going into a downward spiral. Boom, We've got a plan. Okay. What if, you know,
coming up short on my goals, if I want to do 45 minute workout and I stop at 38 minutes,
and I know that's typically what I do is just come up a little teeny tiny bit short.
Well, then I'm going to come up with a plan that when I start coming up short, I'm going to push
past it. Hey, is there something interfering with your

So maybe I know that one of my pitfalls is that I come up short pretty often on my goals.
And I make excuses.
Oh yeah, you know, you're just in a warm-up.
You're going to warm up in your workout on the treadmill for 10 minutes. It's nine minutes and 45 seconds. Now it's time
to hop off. No, no, no. If that's typically one of my pitfalls, I'm going to make a plan to not
fall into that pitfall. So an example would be no matter what my goal is, I'm going to do 10% more.
So if my goal is to do 10 minutes on the treadmill to warm up for my workout, guess what
I'm going to do? I'm going to do 11 minutes. If my goal is to do three sets of 10, well, I'm going to
do three sets of 11. And I'm going to literally plan out my pitfall. If my pitfall is that I
always come up short on my goals and let myself go just a little bit too soon, well, what I'm gonna do,
I'm gonna make myself go a little bit further
every single time, a little bit further every single time,
a little bit further every single time.
And I'm gonna plan out my pitfalls,
which I don't think people ever talk about enough.
You need to plan out how you typically hold yourself back
and what your plan is
next time you find yourself in that position.
Okay, that's number three.
Step number four, you need an accountability system. This is one of my favorite ones
because you can get really creative with it and have a lot of fun. So you need to identify
an accountability system. There's a lot of different accountability systems I've heard
of over the years. I'll give you a few of them. Let's say, and I've heard of this accountability system before. There's a guy who
wanted to wake up early every single day. And so he had an automatic tweet. He wanted to wake up at
five o'clock every single morning. At 5.01, he had an automatic tweet that would go out every single
day. And it would say, you're seeing this tweet because I'm lazy and slept in past my alarm clock.
And then what he would do is when he would wake up at 5 a.m. and actually get out of his bed,
he would then turn that tweet off. So therefore it wouldn't automatically go out.
And it held him accountable to waking up because of the fact that he didn't want people to see
that he was lazy. So that was an accountability system that he set up. You can find your one friend who is either
like, if you want to lose weight and go to the gym, maybe they're the most into the gym, or
your one friend who's kind of a pain in the ass, okay? Here's the secret. Let's say that you want
to go to the gym four times a week. Find that friend that's a pain in the ass call them up and say hey john i want you to be my
accountability partner they'll be like well what do you want me to do i don't want you to do anything
except receive text messages from me like okay that sounds pretty easy i'm going to go to the gym
four times a week and the way that i'm going to hold myself accountable is I'm going to send you a picture of me inside of the gym four times a week. And if I ever miss one of them, I will pay you $1,000.
Do you think that's going to motivate your pain in the ass friend to make sure they check in on
you? Absolutely. They don't even have to be somebody who's into working out. All you need
is somebody who's going to be a pain in your ass that you don't want to pay a thousand dollars to or $500 to or 2000, whatever it is, find out the number
that's motivating for you so that therefore you got to hit it. That's it. It's not that hard,
but you've developed an accountability system. There's many different accountability systems.
You could get somebody, maybe you want a gym partner. Maybe you have somebody that's in the exact same thing
where it's like, hey, if I ever miss a workout with you,
I'm gonna pay you 500 bucks.
If you ever miss a workout with me,
you're gonna have to pay me 500 bucks.
How's that sound?
And you can develop this level of accountability
so that it's not just internal motivation
and drive that you need.
You're actually making internal and external motivation
to get done whatever it is you need to get done
to create the action that you want to and the life that you want to.
So develop an accountability system.
That's number four.
Number five is to take action.
And here's the important part.
Take action despite how you feel.
Here's the reason why.
It's because your brain will play tricks on you and you're not always going to feel 100%
and that's fine.
But you're not even going to believe in yourself at all points of time. And in
fact, you're probably going to believe in yourself less than you don't believe in yourself. You're
probably going to not believe in yourself more than you believe in yourself. Here's the beautiful
thing about belief that I always say. You don't have to believe in yourself in order to take action.
You don't. That's awesome. So when I say take action, despite how you feel,
it means take action because you said you were going to. If you, you know, had the goal to work
out at six o'clock today and you had a really long day at work, sure, of course you could push that
workout off. No, I'll do it another day. But what are your standards for the life that you want? You have
to have standards of like, you know what? I said I was going to do it. I don't give a damn about
how today was. I don't care how tired I am. I'm going to do it because I said I'm going to do it.
And you hold yourself to that standard and take action whenever you need to take action. And
that's when your life will start to change. So when I say take action, it's take action despite how you feel. As long as that action is a step in the right direction of
where you're trying to go. If your goal is to lose weight, how can you take a step in that direction
today? If your goal is to make more money, you know, be worth $10 million in 10 years, how can
you make a step in that direction today? How can you do whatever it is that you need to do to make
a step in the right direction for the life that you want to create? So that is number five. And number six is to do
a weekly review. So I've coached hundreds of coaches on how to, you know, taught hundreds
of coaches and there's been my students on how to grow coaching businesses. One of the things that
I tell them that they need to do every single Sunday is to have a meeting with themselves.
Every single Sunday. It could be 10 minutes, it could be 15 minutes, whatever it is,
you have to have a meeting with yourself. And you have to do something called look back, look forward.
What you do is you look back on how last week went, and then you look forward into this week.
And you make a plan of what went really well last week, what didn't go really well,
and how can I bring the knowledge that I have after last week
and bring it into this week to make sure I make this week the best I possibly can?
One of the things that helps with that is something I got from Puff Daddy, P. Diddy,
years ago when he was on a show called, I think it was called Making the Band,
with Danity Kane, when they created that band that was there.
And he got them all together one time.
And he did something called Stop, Start, Continue.
And so when you sit down, it's super simple to do this.
When you sit down and look back on your last week of your meal planning,
of your workouts, of your business, of whatever it is that you're doing,
your relationship, and you look back and look forward.
So you look back and you figure out what you need to stop doing,
what you need to start doing, and what you need to continue doing.
What do I need to stop doing? You know what I need to do? I need to stop hitting the snooze
button in the morning. Okay, what do I need to start doing? I need to start meal planning every
single Sunday. What do I need to continue doing? I'm doing really good at going to the gym every
single, you know, four times a week. I need to continue doing that. And you start making little
tiny adjustments.
It boggles my mind how often people want to create an amazing life,
but they don't have a date with themselves
to go over how the past week went with themselves.
And you stop, you start, and you continue.
What do I need to stop doing?
You identify all of those things,
and then you plan it into the next week to make sure you stop doing it.
What do I need to start doing? And then you plan out all those things, and you put into the next week to make sure you stop doing it. What do I need to start doing?
And then you plan out all those things
and you put into the next week to make sure you get it done.
And what do I need to continue doing?
And you plan all those things and you put it in.
And what you do is you slowly make incremental adjustments
every single week to create the perfect week for yourself.
That is the secret to start getting what it is
that you want.
It's not that hard.
The funny thing about success is that people act like success needs to be so hard. It needs to be
such a struggle. It's got to be so difficult. It's just got to be such a grind all the time.
And it doesn't. And that's the beautiful thing about it. It doesn't. We've been taught that
success has to be hard and it has to be a struggle. It just takes intention. And what it takes is
action. It takes accountability and making sure that you're heading in the right direction every
single week.
So those are the six steps.
Number one, define success.
Figure out exactly what it is for you.
Number two, make a clear plan for that success.
