Starting point is 00:00:38 Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I come out with a short, to-the-point, no-BS podcast designed to transform you from who you are today into who you want to be. There's no fluff here, just life-changing content. My name is Rob Dial, and the podcast starts now. Welcome to today's episode. If you have not yet done so, please hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another episode. And also, if you have not heard my announcement, if you've been living under a rock or if you haven't heard this yet, for the month of November, I am giving you a trial period where you can try out my group coaching for $1 and $1 only. So you get seven days to try it out. See if it's right for you. You get to look at every single video if you want to. There's over 40 hours of lessons in there. There's the entire
Starting point is 00:01:31 group of over 110, 120 people that are in it that you can access for motivation, for accountability, for people to hold you accountable for what you say you're going to do. There's a lot of different stuff in there. And if you have been on the fence of wanting to try it, you don't even have to pay full price for it. That's the best part. It's $1 to try out. All you do is you try it out. If it's right for you, you continue to stay in the group and you become an actual member. If it's not right for you, no worries. It costs you $1. That was it. So I wanted to make it as easy as possible who have been on this, you know, people who have been on the fence to actually decide to, to try it out and make a change in their life. Because we both know, all of us know, if you can keep doing the exact same thing, if I keep doing the exact same thing,
Starting point is 00:02:13 whatever it is, our lives are going to be exactly the same. Nothing is going to change until we change it. So if you're interested in learning a little bit more about the trial from our group coaching, send me an email, rob at mwfmotivation.com. So an email, rob at mwfmotivation.com. So once again, rob at mwfmotivation.com. Okay. So what I'm going to be talking about today is what it takes to be absolutely great. And what I mean by great is I mean like one of the best in the world at something. And see a few weeks ago, about a month ago now, there's a guy named Gordon Hayward. He plays in the NBA. And in the first six minutes of the very first game, he came down and not only twisted and broke his ankle, but when he came down, he lifted his foot back up and his, his ankle and his foot was facing the opposite direction of what it should be. It was one of those type of accidents.
Starting point is 00:03:02 And I'm not telling you this to gross you out, but what happened was, I don't want to talk about the incident. What I want to talk about is actually the fact that Kobe Bryant offered one of the best looks into his mind and what it takes to be extremely, extremely great at anything in life. And so it was the very first game of the season. And for some athletes, this can be career changing. This can be life changing. Some athletes never come back the same. Some athletes, this is the end of their career when something like that happens. But there's something interesting. Some come back and they're actually better than they were before they had the accident. You might say, why is that? That's kind of weird. And so with Kobe Bryant, just so you know what happened with him, back in 2013, he tore his Achilles tendon and had to go through long, about almost a year of rehab to make it better. And so
Starting point is 00:03:57 Kobe Bryant sent a message to Gordon Hayward. It was an Instagram post with Gordon Hayward tagged in it. And I want to read it to you. And then I want to go over the six points that if you just read it, you're like, wow, this is a really good post. But if you really break it down, it's basically like a masterclass of what it takes to be great at anything in life. So let me read it to you. And then I'll go over the six different parts. So this is what he says.
Starting point is 00:04:20 He says, be mad. Actually, excuse me. He says, be sad, be mad, be frustrated, scream, cry, and sulk. When you wake up, you will think that it was just a nightmare only to realize that it's all too real. You will be angry and wish for that day back, that game back, that playback. But in reality, nothing, but reality gives you nothing back nor should you time to move on and focus on doing everything in your power to prepare for surgery ask all of the questions to be sure that you fully
Starting point is 00:04:55 understand the procedure so that you may visualize it in your subconscious while being operated on and better the chance of its success. Then focus on the recovery process day by day by day. It's a long journey, but you need to focus on the many milestones along the way and you will find beauty in the struggle of doing simple things that prior to this injury were taken for granted. This will also mean that when you return, you will have a new perspective. You will be so appreciative of being able to walk, to stand, to run, that you will train harder than you ever have. You see the belief within yourself grow with each mini
Starting point is 00:05:39 milestone and you will come back a better player for it. Best of luck to you on your journey. milestone and you will come back a better player for it. Best of luck to you on your journey. So let me talk about the six different parts of being great that you can really see. Honestly, you can really see the greatness mindset that Kobe Bryant has, and it's broken into six different parts as I was reading this. So the first thing, number one, part number six is, you know, step number six, I guess, key number six. He says, be human. Kobe says to be sad, be mad, be frustrated, scream, cry, and sulk. He's telling Gordon Hayward to allow himself to be a human, to feel the emotions, to give himself time to get over this injury emotionally first. Because you have to realize sometimes one of the main reasons why we don't get over this injury emotionally first. Because you have to realize sometimes one of the main
Starting point is 00:06:25 reasons why we don't get over certain things in our past is because we're not actually allowing ourselves or we never have allowed ourselves to actually grieve and feel the human emotions to be an actual human, right? Sometimes we just try to look past it, act like it didn't happen or try to quote unquote, keep ourselves busy, right? That's not the way to get over something by quote unquote, keeping yourself busy. So that's the first thing he says to be human. The second thing he says is you will want that playback, but reality gives you nothing back. So he says, after you're done crying and sulking and all that stuff, it's time to move on, right? Now, this is not, when he, he does not say cry and sulk for the next three years, right? Some of us, some people out there love to cry and
Starting point is 00:07:11 sulking. They've been doing it for months or years, whatever it is. Here's the deal. Feel the emotions, then get over it. You can't change the past. You will never be able to change the past. After you allow yourself to grieve, get over it and focus on the only thing that you can change right now. You can only change right now because if you change your mindset, you change your attitude and you change what you're doing right now and what you're working on right now, it will eventually change your future. You can't change the past. You will never be able to change the past. So after your grieving process, which shouldn't be too long, get over it and start working towards making a
Starting point is 00:07:51 better future. So that's number two. Number three, he says, visualize what you want. He says, be sure you fully understand the procedure so that you may visualize it in your subconscious while being operated on and better the chance of its success. This is a huge one that I don't think a lot of people even know is part of the process of being extremely great at something. I don't, uh, you know, I don't, I don't have a whole bunch of time to go into the extreme in-depth process of how your subconscious works. Um, if you want to learn more about the power of your subconscious, there's actually a book with that title, The Power of Your Subconscious Mind, that you can read. But if nothing else, here's
Starting point is 00:08:29 what you need to know. When you visualize something, two things happen when you visualize something. And I recommend whatever your goal is, visualize it every single morning before you leave your house. Here's what happens though. Number one, you visualize it your path starts to become more and more clear Of how you're going to get there and what you need to do to get there That's the first part of it The second part is it will make you more excited to get there Because when you're done visualizing and you open your eyes You will have already felt like you were there like you've already achieved what you wanted to achieve
Starting point is 00:09:01 And when you open your eyes and you're not there you you'll go, oh crap, I need to get there. It feels like something was taken from you. So you get more motivation, more drive, and more excitement from visualizing what it is that you want because you already feel like you've had it. So that's number three is to visualize. Number four, take it day by day. Kobe says, then focus on the recovery process
Starting point is 00:09:22 day by day by day. The only thing that you control is this present moment right now, today, this very second. So no need to worry about the future because it's not here yet. You can't control tomorrow today. So work hard on yourself, work hard on your goal today so that when you go to bed tonight, you're at least a little bit better than you were when you woke up this morning. That's it. You're better tonight when you go to bed than you were when you woke up this morning. Number five, he says, make sure that you enjoy the process.
Starting point is 00:09:53 Kobe says it's a long journey, but if you focus on the many milestones along the way, you will find beauty in the struggle of doing simple things. This is big. Most extremely successful people that I know or that I've studied are not doing it for the fame. They're not doing it for the money. They're doing it because they enjoy the process. They enjoy the journey. They enjoy the challenge of getting better, working towards a goal, hitting that goal, all of those things. They enjoy the process. That's why you find so many extremely successful people
Starting point is 00:10:25 still working. They don't need to work. They don't need money. Bill Gates doesn't need money. Mark Cuban, Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, they don't need money. They could retire right this second and live better than a lot more people in this world because they're worth billions upon billions of dollars. They could do whatever they wanted. They don't need the money. They don't work because they want the money. They work because they enjoy the process of what they're doing. They enjoy the journey. And so that's what he says. Number five, enjoy the process. And number six, he says, be appreciative. He says, this will also mean when you return, you'll have a new perspective. You will be so appreciative of being able to stand and walk and run that you will train harder than you ever have. Here's the thing. So many times we take
Starting point is 00:11:10 little things in our life for granted, having food, water, shelter, clothing, health, being able to walk, breathe, see. There's so many things, little things that we take for granted. So many things to be appreciative. And he says that when something like this happens, something that could be a, you know, catastrophic for you, it forces you to be grateful for all of the little things in your life that you take for granted, right? So you don't have to wait until somebody dies or until something terrible happens in order to be appreciative of what you have. You can do that right now. So that's number six. He said, be appreciative. So although it may seem to most people like, oh man, that was a really nice, you know, Instagram post that Kobe Bryant put up for Gordon Hayward. It was,
Starting point is 00:11:55 but it was also a masterclass of what it takes to be great. I mean, absolute greatness, what it takes to be great at something. And so let me go through it one more time. Number one, he says, be human. Allow yourself to feel the emotions on something. Number two, move on. Number three, visualize what you want. Number four, take it day by day. Number five, enjoy the process. Enjoy the journey. Number six, be appreciative. Be grateful for what you have. So those are the six steps to being great at anything. So now the question I have for you is now that you know the six step process to becoming great, what are you going to focus on becoming great at? So with that, I'm going to leave you the same.
