Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I'm your host, Rob Dial. And

Today, I'm going to be giving you seven tips to be more disciplined. Because the more disciplined
that you have, the more that you can get yourself to do, the more that you will get out of your life.
And the reason why I say this is because nothing happens in your life unless action is taken.
You do not get the life that you want by sitting and hoping and wishing and praying that you
get it.
Now, all of that is important.
I do like those as well.
But there has to be a piece of you that gets up and actually does something.
And the more that you can develop discipline, the more that you can actually get stuff done.
But it brings us back first to actually talking about what discipline is.
Discipline, when you think about the word, depending on how you use it, can be seen as having a bad connotation. Like if you discipline your dog for doing something, you discipline your child for
doing something, that seems like a bad thing. But simply put, discipline for yourself is being able
to take action even when you don't feel like it. So you take action regardless of
how you feel. It's the feeling of resistance of, ah, man, I don't really want to do this,
and then leaning into that resistance, saying, you know what? It doesn't matter. Like, for instance,
we use the gym as an example. You say, you know what? I was supposed to work out today.
I don't really feel like working out today. Regardless of how you feel, discipline is still showing up to the gym
and working out. It's doing it regardless of how you feel because you said you were going to do it.
It's following the mind and not the body. The mind knows that you need to do it, but there's some
sort of a disconnect in the body, right? It's like, oh, you know what? I kind of want to be a little
bit lazy today. I'm so comfortable right now. I don't want to be uncomfortable.
The mind knows you need to do it, but you need to figure out where the disconnect is.
And so I'm going to give you seven different tips to be more disciplined in ways to help yourself.
And you should jump, you know, jump and go get your journal, whatever it is, because I've got
some journaling questions for you that will help you through this process as well. Okay. Number one, tip number one is to focus on the opportunity,
not the obligation. If you've been listening to my podcast long enough, you've heard me say this
before. Focus on the opportunity, not the obligation. You're not going to love everything.
So if we go back to, let's go back to working out. Okay. The obligation is you do need to show up to the gym and work out.
The opportunity is having a body that you've always wanted. The opportunity is living longer
because you're taking care of yourself. And so you can look at it and be like, oh, damn it. I
got to go to the gym, which is something that you do have to do. That is the obligation. But
the opportunity is think about how much healthier you're going to be. Think about how much more
energy you're going to have. Think about how much healthier you're going to be think about how much more energy you're going to have think about how much longer you're going
to live to see your grandchildren and be able to play with your grandchildren when you're in your
old ages versus being stuck to you know a chair or a wheelchair or something the obligation still
needs to be done but you're focusing on the opportunity now even if you don't want it just
to be healthy when you get later on in life but maybe you're just you want to be vain and you're focusing on the opportunity. Now, even if you don't want it just to be healthy
when you get later on in life,
but maybe you're just, you want to be vain
and you're like, damn it,
I just want to look good in my bikini.
I want to look like, I want some six pack abs.
Okay, cool.
Maybe the opportunity is looking amazing
and having great confidence
because you look better than you ever have before
in six months because you've been showing up for yourself
and you look amazing in a bikini.
The obligation is you still got to show up to the gym. You still got to eat healthy. You still got
to drink the water. You still got to make sure that you're getting enough sleep. And basically
what you're doing is you're reminding yourself of your why. Why am I doing this? Because most
people focus on what they need to do versus what that end result is going to feel like, what
it's going to be like when you get there. Now, you still need to do the obligation, but instead of
focusing on the obligation, you're focusing on the why. You're focusing on the opportunity of what it
is that you do. So you remind yourself of that. You're not going to love every single thing that
you have to do, but you've got to just say, hey, you know what? This is what I'm going to get done.
Like, so for instance, I'll give you a great example of myself. One of the things that I
don't like doing is I don't like planning podcast episodes. It's a part of what I do. Like, it's not
the worst thing in the world, but to sit down and do some research and plan stuff and put it all
together and make sure that it flows. I put everything in a bullet point script so that
therefore it's in bullet points. So I make sure I hit all of the points that I wanted to, so I can make sure I'm as thorough as possible, right?
I love recording the podcast. I love doing what I'm doing right now, but the obligation is I have
to sit there and actually plan it. Because if I don't plan it, I don't record it. And if I don't
record it, it doesn't go out to millions of people. The opportunity is that this podcast could
possibly change somebody's life.
This podcast could go out to tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of people and change their
lives. So I'm focusing on that while I'm still actually doing the obligation, which is you got
to sit down and actually start to plan some stuff. And so a question I have for you is where are you
not taking action where you should be? What opportunity should you be focusing on
when you've been focusing too much on the obligation?
So write those questions down.

Tip number two is to do the really small things well.
I'm a big believer in mastering the small things.
You know, if you're an athlete,
the best athletes in the world
are not the ones that do the most crazy things. You know, if you're an athlete, the best athletes in the world are not the ones that do the
most crazy things. They master the fundamentals of what it is that they do. I was watching a video
not too long, about six months ago, eight months ago, and it was Dwayne Wade, a basketball player,
being interviewed about Kobe Bryant. And he was saying, you know, the Lakers came in and he was
watching Kobe in Miami. They were doing their warm-ups their
warm-ups and he would do the exact same thing over and over and over and over again in his warm-ups
he would take the ball he'd get it passed to him at the top of the three-point like at the top of
the key he would go to the corner the left corner of the basketball hoop he would shoot it and then
he would go back and do the same thing over and over and over again. He did the same thing for 20 or 30 minutes. And Dwayne Wade was like, this is easy. I know exactly what
Kobe Bryant's going to do. And he said, even though he knew exactly what he was going to do,
he could not stop him. Why? Not because he was fancy, not because he did any new dunks or
anything like that. It's because he mastered the fundamental of going from this place,
dribbling to this place, shooting perfectly the way that he should, right? Success is doing the small things that matter
day in, day out. The reason why the small things also matter is because the way you do one thing
is the way you do everything. And so if you do the small things really well, you'll also do the big
things really well. And so what are the small things required for you to get what you want?
What are the small things required for you to get what you want? What are they? What are the small things that you need to master? And the next question is, what are the small things I need to
master every single day? Right? So what are the small things required for you to get what you
want? And what are the small things that I need to master every single day? Do the small things
really well. Okay. Tip number three, design your environment. Design your environment to make taking action
easier for yourself. What do I mean by this? I'll give you a couple of examples.
Me, my body loves sugar. Like if I have sugar, my body turns into like a crack addict. I just
want more and more and more sugar. And so if I have a piece of candy, I just want to start and
go and finish the entire bag. So what do I do? My house is an environment
designed to make this easier on myself. I just don't buy any candy. And my house is designed,
so if you go in, I've got, you know, different places in the kitchen where there's just fruit
that's sitting out. It's not candy. It's not any of that type of stuff. There's fruit that's
sitting out. And I make it easier for me to have a healthier snack versus me to have something
that's full of sugar.
And so how can you do this?
Think about your life and what you need to do and how you can design your environment
to make it easier to take action,
not harder to take action.
So for instance, do you spend too much time on the couch?
Okay, if you spend too much time on the couch
throughout the day when you should be working,
maybe you work from home,
take all of the cushions off the couch
and throw them in your closet every single morning
because you're not gonna sit on a couch that doesn't have cushions on it.
Well, now you got to figure out something else, something to do with your time besides sitting
on the couch. Do you waste too much time on social media? Put your phone in another room
and don't allow yourself to use it for an hour. How can you design your environment? When you go
to my house, 95% of the time, my phone is in the drawer inside of the kitchen. And when it's out of sight,
out of mind, I forget about it. But when it's next to me, I check it like 200 times. And so
what I've found is I'm going to design my environment. If my phone is stealing too much of
my time, my bandwidth, my attention, what I'm going to do is I'm going to try to take that
and make it easier. I'm going to put it in another room. I'm going to put it in the drawer. There's a
specific drawer inside of my kitchen where I keep my phone.
What's another example of designing your environment and making it easier?
Do you want to wake up and go for a run?
Okay, well then put your running shoes, put your socks, put your underwear, put your shorts, put your shirt, everything next to the sink
so that when you go to sleep, you wake up, you brush your teeth,
and you don't have to think about it.
Your clothes are immediately right there right after you brush your teeth. Hell, if you want to make
it even easier, go to bed in your running clothes. So you literally wake up and you're already
dressed. How can you design your environment to support you into taking action? So a question you
can ask yourself, what in my environment do I need to change in order to make taking action easier
on myself? What in my environment do I need to change in order to make taking action easier on myself?
What in my environment do I need to change in order to make taking action easier on myself?

Tip number four, make your body move. Make your body move. I almost never feel like working out,
but after working out, I feel like I could go for a little bit more, right? Like I actually want to do more reps. I want to do more
sets and I feel amazing after. So what happened? I forced my body into creating action. And in that
action, chemicals started to change my body, change my brain, and maybe want to get, gave me more
drive and want to keep going. Action creates more action. Inaction creates more
inaction. And so if I know that I want to work out, one of the easiest ways to do it is to just
simply get my body moving. I don't have to go in and, you know, I have a gym inside of my garage,
but I don't have to go into the garage and immediately start doing bench presses, you know,
heavy PR bench presses. That's not what I'm going to do. I'm going to go in there. I'm going to do
some jumping jacks. I'll put on, you know, a song that's just like some, some, you know, heavy, loud beat that just kind of like,
all right, yeah, like I'm getting my mind, my hearing into the zone, everything. And then I'll
just go, you know what? I'm going to do a hundred jumping jacks and I'll just do a hundred jumping
jacks, get my blood up, get my blood flowing. And then from there, that little bit of action
makes a little bit more action a little bit easier. So what you want to do is you want to
figure out a way to make your body start moving. And so ask yourself this question, what's a five
minute movement that I can do to get my energy flowing? What is it? Maybe it's jumping jacks,
maybe it's pushing jacks, maybe pushing jacks, pushups, maybe it's squats. What's a five minute
movement that I can do to get my energy flowing. Maybe you put on your favorite song and you just dance like an idiot for five minutes. Whatever gets your energy flowing,
because if you're inactive, it makes it really hard to start taking action because you want to
be more inactive. But if you're like, you know what, I'm going to break this inaction and I'm
going to take some action right now, what is the best way that you can take five minutes to get
your energy flowing? So that's number four is to make your body move. Number five, super simple, count down and go. Mel Robbins has a book called The
Five Second Rule about this, about counting down from five. I have been doing this for a really
long time. I used to be really shy and I realized around seventh, eighth grade that girls don't
really like shy guys. And I wanted some girls. I wanted a girlfriend, right? So I would make myself start talking. One of the ways that I make myself, actually the main way I
made myself start talking is I would figure out what I was going to say. I would concentrate on
the first word. So let's say the first word is what. And in my head, I would go three, two, one,
and then I would go what. And I would finish the sentence. I wouldn't just say what,
one and then I go what and I would finish the sentence I wouldn't just say what and then go quiet but I would say the first word countdown three two one and then just say that word for me
at that point it just made it so much easier because I had to finish the sentence and I got
past that resistance point I still do it like if I have to have a tough conversation with my fiance
or if I have to have a tough conversation with an employee, and I'm like nervous to have this conversation, I'll literally know what I'm going to say.
And I'll go three, two, one, and I'll force myself to say it. I literally did it like three days ago.
And so the reason why this is powerful is because it's ingrained to a lot of us as kids.
You know, when you were a kid, there used to be times when your mom was like,
you better be in the kitchen in three, two, one. And none of us ever knew what was going to happen
at one, but we're like, oh my God, the world's going to crumble. And we would run and do whatever
it is our parents needed. Cause it was like, you know, all hell was going to come down on us. I
guess if we got, our parents got to zero. And so it's ingrained into us. When you watch a takeoff
of like a rocket, it counts down 10, 9, 8, 7, 6,
5, 4, 3, 2, 1. And so when your brain, it's like kind of like our brains, it's ingrained into us
that when we count down, we take action. And so what you want to do is you want to count down
and go. What is it that you need to do? So maybe you're sitting on the couch,
you're scrolling on Instagram, you know, you got to get up and go for a run and you're sitting
there like, oh, I don't want to do
it. And I'm loving sitting in the air conditioning and blah, blah, blah. And you're sitting there
and you go, okay, three, two, one. And just make, force your body just to get off the couch. Force
your body to get up and do something. And like force it off the couch and immediately just go
to jumping jacks. Get your body moving. Use the one that we were talking about a minute ago.
Get your body moving. It's just a countdown and talking about a minute ago. Get your body moving.
It's just a countdown and go.
And so the question you want to ask yourself around this one is how can I incorporate the countdown action?
How can I use this more in my life?
Maybe like one of the resistance points that you have is cold calling people in your job.
You go three, two, one, and you just force yourself to, you know, push the buttons.
Whatever it is you have to do.
How can you incorporate the countdown action into your life?
Number six, this is a super important one.
Ask yourself this question.
How can I make taking action easier?
For some reason, when we look at, it's almost like it's programmed into us with like hustle
culture and grind culture is like life, success, happiness, all of those things have to
be difficult is the way we think. There's no reason why any of them need to be hard. There's
no reason why any of them need to be a struggle. There is not inherent struggle in any of those,
but we think that there needs to be. And so how can you make it easier on yourself to take action?
How can you find the easy route? What do you need to do to make everything in your life easier? To make taking
action easier? What is it that you can do? And you ask yourself the question, how can I make
taking action easier on myself? How can I make taking action easier on myself? And you design
your life around taking action towards your goals,
towards your life, towards your fitness, towards your relationships, towards your happiness,
towards your meditation, your peace, all of those things. How can you make taking action towards
that easier on yourself? So that's number six. And number seven, get an accountability partner.
Who do you know around you that is somebody who's also working on themselves, who also wants to
improve? So who is that person? Can you find that? If you don't have that person, can you go find somebody
that would be that person? You know, don't say, oh, I live in a small town. There's nobody around
me. Go find them. Even if they don't live in the same city as you, you know, join some meetup
groups, whatever you got to do. Once you find that person, how often are you going to talk?
Can you find somebody that will hold your feet to the fire? And even if your accountability partner isn't even on the same
page as you, I always say this. If say you want to go to the gym five times a week and you have
a friend who is just like the annoying friend and you're like, hey, do you want to go to the gym
five times a week with me? They're like, hell no. And you're like, okay, they're the annoying friend.
What you want to do is you want to ask that annoying friend, hey, don't even ask him, just tell him, I want to go to the gym five
times a week and I want you to hold me accountable to it. Anytime that I don't send you a picture of
myself in the gym five times a week, I will give you a hundred dollars for every picture that I
don't send. They're like, okay, what do I have to do? Nothing, just receive messages and make sure
that you're at the gym five times a week. And if you're not, I get paid. Cool. They're like, okay. What do I have to do? Nothing just receive messages and make sure that you're at the gym five times a week
And if you're not I get paid cool
They're gonna be on your ass. Why because they want to make sure they get paid
And you're gonna be on your ass. Why because you don't want to pay them
And so you literally they could be the completely out of shape not driven just annoying as hell and you're like, you know what?
I want to go to gym five times a week. I'm going to send you a picture of me at the gym
Every single day five times every five times a week. And if I miss a day, I'll pay you a hundred dollars
for every single time that I miss. That alone is an incredible accountability partner, even if
they're not on the same page as you. And so you start thinking to yourself, how can I do this?
You know, what are you not taking action where you should be? What opportunities should you be
focused on? What are some of the small things that should be? What opportunities should you be focused on?
What are some of the small things that you could do that you can master every single day?
You know, what do you need to do in your environment
in order to make taking action easier on yourself?
What's a five-minute movement that you can do to get your energy flowing?
How can you incorporate the countdown routine into taking action?
How can you make everything easier on yourself?
And then how can you find an accountability partner and how often will you talk? So those are the seven tips to
making sure that you are more disciplined because the more disciplined that you are, the more stuff
that you get done. The more stuff that you get done, the more that you create the life that you
