Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial. Today is Thursday, so that means that it is the business edition of the Mindset Mentor, which also means that I am joined by my co-host, Dean DeVries. Dean DeVries, my best friend and business partner. How are you? I'm doing amazing. I love Thursdays, man. I love Thursdays as well. Today, we're going to be diving into your relationship with all of your goals. And if you're like most people, most people who are driven, if you're listening to this podcast, which it seems like you are, you're probably the type of person who has once set a
Starting point is 00:00:44 goal, but then not achieve that goal. And you've probably set goals and achieve them. So we're going to talk about is how to get better at achieving your goals through figuring out a better relationship with your goals. Awesome. Yeah. And you know, if you've hit a goal and, or if you've set a goal and not hit it, uh, you may have also had the experience of losing momentum because of not achieving that goal. Yeah. And it just kind of like creates this downward spiral for some people. I know I've definitely gone through this where it's where then there's just things that pop
Starting point is 00:01:17 up like the limiting beliefs and whatnot. So today we're going to just have a really honest look at how you view your goals and the relationship that you have with your goals. Yeah, and I think that's relatable for a lot of people because you can, you know, want to lose 10 pounds. And you can put in a whole lot of work and you can lose one pound over a week and you're like, all right, not what I wanted to see, but at least it was good. And then you put in a whole lot of work the next week and you're even, and then you're like, this sucks. There's no way that I'm going to hit my goal. Right. And then what happens? Then you start giving me the beliefs like you're talking about. Then you start going backwards and then you're like, fuck it. I don't want to do this. There's no point in me even putting my time into it. Yeah. Yeah. And the,
Starting point is 00:01:59 the difference maker is that commitment, right? To have that unwavering commitment, even when things don't go as planned, even? To have that unwavering commitment, even when things don't go as planned, even when you have that week that you plateau or you have that experience, that's kind of like a step back. Yeah. Right. So let me give a little, little secret to everybody. There will be weeks that don't go as planned and there will be step backs. That's just the way that it's going to be. And so if you can go into it, knowing that there's a pretty good chance that you're not going to always knock it out of the park, maybe you'll get a, you know, a strikeout, maybe you'll get a base hit, but as long as you just go, okay, I'm going
Starting point is 00:02:33 to set standards for myself. I'm going to continue down this path, no matter what deal eventually gets your goal. Yeah. And I think greatness is not about how many moments of greatness that you achieve because of the results that you get, but many moments of greatness that you achieve because of the results that you get, but your moments of greatness are actually because of how you continue showing up and the relationship. Like, do you have, when you set goals and the relationship that you have with those goals, is it like a, Oh, that would be nice to lose 10 pounds, or that would be nice to double my income this year in my business, or that would be nice to fill in the blank versus like, I don't care what happens. I can get hit by a truck
Starting point is 00:03:17 and I will still achieve this goal. I am deciding that this is what I want. This is why this is important and connecting to the vision of I'm imagining my business. I'm imagining myself. I'm imagining everything around me, my life this way. And in order to realize that vision, I've got to achieve these goals. And I just want to take a moment to just like make that distinction of there's a difference between the vision and the goals that support that vision. Right. Right. So I think it's really important to, I think you need both without one, you know, you're, you're not serving the overall picture. The vision is the experience that you actually want. Yeah. Right. What does it feel like to double your income this year? What does it feel like to hire a new employee every single month? Right. So those, those are some examples of like,
Starting point is 00:04:13 you know, what the goals could be. But if the vision is to create a business that serves at this capacity or has a thriving environment, those goals would support that vision. Yeah. The way I like to think of it like this, as you're explaining it, for some reason, Sonic the Hedgehog pops in my head. Oh, of course. It makes sense, right? It'll make sense. Just give me a second, everybody.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Here we go. Ready? When I was a kid, I used to take Sonic, you know, Sega Genesis, right? You put that game in. The goal of the game is to beat it, right? Like the overall vision, as you're saying, if we're putting in the words you're speaking of, the vision is to beat the game. But in order to beat the game, what do you have to do? You have to go from one level to the next and one level to the next. You only have a certain amount of time, but you have to hit that level in order to go to the next level.
Starting point is 00:04:57 And if I hit level one and level two and level three, level four, and eventually get past them, and I'm not going to hit them all at once, like I'm going to fail and I'm going to fail and then fail. It might take me longer, longer, longer. Eventually I will beat that game. Right? So what you're saying is it seems kind of like the vision is the game of Sega Genesis that I'm playing, you know, the, um, Sonic the Hedgehog, the goals are the checkpoints or the different levels that you have to set up in order to eventually get there. Yeah. And one thing that popped up for me as you're just saying that is, yeah, I love that. The vision is completing and beating the game. The goals are the levels, but the biggest gift that comes from all of that is the player of that game that you become. Yeah. The skill.
Starting point is 00:05:43 And enjoying the process, right? Yes. Right. Because we've all played video games or something like that, and we've hated every single minute of it, and then we don't finish it, right? So I think that's why the vision matters so much is because, you know, if I was a little boy and I was playing a game that I didn't want, I wouldn't finish the game. I wouldn't force myself to finish it. I'd be like, I'm done with this. Yeah. Put in another one. So I think that's why the vision matters the most. It's something that really feels true to your purpose is because then you're going to want to continue. Yeah. Put in another one. So I think that's why the vision matters the most. And if we have goals without the vision, sometimes it could feel like we're just going through the motions. It's just like the mundane doing the same thing over and over again,
Starting point is 00:06:16 you know, making those calls, whatever it is in your business, that's moving the needle forward. Yep. It's important to have the vision and stay connected to that vision. But at the same time, vision without goals is we don't, we don't have those checkpoints. So I think both are so necessary. So, you know, goals would be, you know, just to clarify, like, you know, if the vision is, you know, I want to create a business or I want to have a level of business that can do this, that satisfies this purpose or creates this lifestyle for me. And then you've got the goals, which are the metrics, the numbers on the spreadsheet, right? So there's a formula for goals and goals should really have three things. Number one is the destination. Like what is the actual, you know, the, the, the, how do you know that you're going to
Starting point is 00:07:07 arrive? How do you know that you're there at the goal? You know, if it's a, a lot of people have goals around like their income, right? So like, what's the level of income? The second part to that is how are you going to measure it? So are you measuring your income based on probably dollars or, you know, whatever your currency is? If it's to grow the size of your sales team,
Starting point is 00:07:26 maybe it's number of salespeople. So there's the actual result. Then there's the measurement of how do you know that you're there or not. And then also what's really important, a lot of people miss this, is the timeframe. Yeah. What is it? I think that the phrase is something like a goal without a timeframe, a goal without a goal without an end time is just a dream, right? Is basically what it is. And I think part of that as well, that's really important is to get really clear on what the goal is. One of the things that I preach is clarity, clarity, clarity, like get very, very, very, very, very, very, very. And I can't say enough varies clear on exactly what that goal is because a lot of people go into their new year's
Starting point is 00:08:11 resolution and say, I want to lose weight this year. Cool. If you lose one pound, you hit your goal. I'm pretty damn sure you didn't want to lose just one pound. Right. Right. Or I want to make more money this year. Okay. If you make $1, you actually, one more dollar than you did last time, you hit your goal. Yeah. But I'm pretty sure that's not what you wanted. And so I always say, okay, what is the exact amount that you want to make? $100,000. Okay. Now you know when of this year. Okay. By December 31st. Perfect. Okay. What is your, your weight goal? I want to, you know, I weigh 200 pounds. I want to get to 185, right? Okay. What body fat do you want to be at? I want to be at this percent body fat. Okay, cool. Do you have a picture of the person
Starting point is 00:08:51 who has the perfect body that you want? You do go ahead and print that out. So you know exactly what you're working for every single day, the weight that you want to hit the body fat that you want to hit the muscle mass that you want to hit. And here's a picture of the person. Who's more likely to hit the target? The person who's just kind of winging it or the person like, this is what I'm going to do. Having the timeframe, I think, is the most important part because it's just like Sonic, right? You can't beat the entire game unless you go through level one, level two, level three, level four. So there's these different checkpoints all along the way. And our goals are very similar. If we just say, Hey, I just want to, you know, increase my income next year. That's not specific enough. I want to increase my income next year by a hundred thousand dollars. Well, in order to do
Starting point is 00:10:19 that, there has to be some, some mini goals along the way. So what, what does that mean for, um, for each month or each quarter? You know, what are they going to be the quarterly goals that lead you to that yearly goal? And what are the, what are the monthly goals going to be in order to reach those quarterly goals? And what, what has to be the goal every week in order to reach those monthly goals every day, having a specific measurable goal and commitment that leads you to ultimately what you want to create in the longterm. Yeah. And I think the, the most, not the most important thing, but one of those, one very important part of that is taking your goals and putting it, you know, taking a goal and what you really truly want
Starting point is 00:10:58 and kind of having three goals, right? So you have your must, you have your should, and you have your could. Yeah. Right. So your must is like, I have to, no matter what, if I get hit by a fucking truck, hit this goal. Yeah. Your should is if I continue on the path that I am on the path that I'm going on and the path that I, that I have growth, me, me growing as much as I have been growing, I should hit this goal. And then the could is like, if I really work my ass off, this is what I could hit. Right. So tell me a little bit more about those. Yeah. So, uh, yeah, I love that. The, the must goal is kind of like the, it's the hit by
Starting point is 00:11:35 the truck number, right? I w it doesn't matter what happens. Like I'm at least going to do this. And that's, that's like the, uh, the absolute minimum. That's the standard. If shit hits the fan, you're still going to... And we do this with our team. I have a hit by... I call it the hit by a truck number. I have them give me their hit by a truck number. So if someone's out there and you have people on your team, if you're a sales director, you have people on your sales team, you need to have the people on your team give you a hit by a truck number every single week or every single month. They give it to you so that you can then push them to like, dude, you're way behind what you said
Starting point is 00:12:14 you were going to do. And the reason why is because people love to give excuses. We love to give excuses to ourself and people love to give excuses to people below you, quote unquote, below you in the company, in the latter, love to give you excuses as to why they're not hitting their goals. So if they have a hit by a truck number, what that literally means is if I get hit by a truck and I'm in the hospital for the next month, I will still hit this number. Yeah. Yeah. I think that's really powerful because now it's, it's not just, and this is kind of how we open this up is like, what's the relationship that we have to our goals and having these three frames
Starting point is 00:12:51 kind of give us a little bit, uh, different of a relationship, right? The must goal is more of a commitment. It's not even like a goal. Some people think of goals as like, Oh yeah, that would be nice. Right. And if, if you've thought about goals like that in the past, having this must goal or commitment, rather, this is the decision. Like I am deciding that this is at least going to happen. So even if I don't, you know, grow my skillsets, even if I don't grow personally, I know I'll at least be able to do this. This is a standard that my business will not go below this year. Yeah, absolutely not. Yep. So that's the must goal. Then we've got the should goal, right? This is, this assumes that based on historical data, right? Looking, looking back on the last year, two years, three years, and looking at the way that you've grown in your business, the way that
Starting point is 00:13:42 you've grown as a person and as a professional and as a salesperson or whatever, whatever role you play in moving the needle forward in the business. If you give that same level of effort, the same level of intention to continue growing on that same path, what should you be able to do? That's really the should, right? You know, the should is like, you know, if I just keep going on this path, then, you know, maybe not get hit by a truck. You know, if I don't get hit by a truck and I keep going on this pace, I should be able to get this done. I should be able to continue growing at this trajectory. Yeah. And the could is the one that you really want to hit. This is the exciting one. That's the, the big, hairy, audacious goal. The BHAG is what we used to call it, right? The big, hairy, audacious goal. The BHAG is what we used to call it, right? The big, hairy, audacious goal.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I made $100,000 this year. I want to make 250 next year, right? That's a 250% growth. Like you're going to have to completely expand yourself. But if it gets you excited and it's something that if you really worked your ass off to do, you could do it. Yeah, yeah. The could goal has the greatest gift, not just because
Starting point is 00:14:45 you're hitting the, the, the, the top goal and you're getting the best result, but who you become in that process. The could goal always brings out our highest potential. Um, the could goal is, should make you feel really uncomfortable, right? Because when we set our could goal, feel really uncomfortable. Right. Because when we set our could goal, we have to have that, that pit in our stomach, like, Oh, I'm not even sure if that, like that little voice, you know, the little, the little voice inside of our head that says, Oh, I don't know if you could do it. Like that has to be there when you're setting your could goal. And I think most people, the problem is that they take their should goal and make it their could goal. Like, yeah, I made, I made $100,000 last year. I'll probably, I can make 115 this year. Right? Like, no, you probably should make 115 this year, but that's not what you truly want. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:15:35 Or, you know, my, my sales team, I have four people. I could probably bring on another one this year. Really? What if you just doubled it? What would happen to your business? What would happen to your sales department if you went from four to eight? Yeah. What if you doubled your numbers? Oh, you brought in half a million dollars this year. Oh yeah. I probably could get to five 50. No. What if you were to push yourself to get to a million? Yeah. Right. Those are the numbers that you should, they should excite you and scare the shit out of you at the exact same time. Yeah. And, and like I said, the gift that comes along with that is that in order to achieve the could goal, you have to grow yourself probably more than you've, you've never, you've ever grown before. You've got to expand your capacity.
Starting point is 00:16:15 You've got to expand your skillset. Like you've got to be more on point in order to achieve your could goal than you ever have before. And that actually is the greatest gift. It's not just about, Hey, you go from half a million dollars to a million dollars. Yeah. You're going to be really fired up about that, but who you become in the process, nobody will be able to take that away from you and you'll be able to continue growing. And you'll also be able to develop this confidence of like, look what I just did. And now what could be possible after that? That's when it gets really exciting. Yeah. And the beautiful thing about who you become in the process of hitting your goals
Starting point is 00:16:52 is that when you say no one can take that away from you, you're not just talking about no one can take away the fact that you went from half a million to a million. They can't take away the fact that that person is now you, that that is ingrained into you. I remember years ago when I bought my first house, I was still working at a company and it scared the shit out of me that I just bought a house. I was like, oh my God, I just bought a house. I don't, I don't even want to be working this job. I don't want to be here. Right. And I remember I was driving down the street and I saw a guy on the side of the road as a homeless guy and he had a sign. And I thought to myself, if I were to lose
Starting point is 00:17:30 everything, everything, and I were to be in this guy's position, the one thing that can never be taken away from you for me was all of the work I've done in myself, all of the growth, the person I've become. So if I were to lose everything, I know that I can at least get back to where I am right now. And that's the beautiful thing is that no matter what happens, the government can't come and take your personal growth away from you. Nobody else that you know could come and take that personal growth away from you. So the person that you become in the process is the actual gift that you get to hold on to the rest of your life yeah it's your safest asset yeah really is which is why we always say and not just us but many people say the best investment you ever make is in yourself is because
Starting point is 00:18:14 it ain't going anywhere yeah i mean look at all the millionaires multi-millionaires that lose everything and then within a year or two build it back back up even bigger than it was before. It's because they became that version. So just imagine that you are the captain of your ship. You're driving the ship. And this is the metaphor of like, we're driving the ship to get to our destination, which is the goal. And every great captain has a destination. They all have, they know where they're going
Starting point is 00:18:46 to end up. Even shitty captains have destinations. Right. Yeah. They'd be really shitty if they didn't have a destination, but, and it's a really good reflection. Like, you know, are you a shitty captain? Like, do you have a destination? If you don't, if you're listening to this and by the way, there's no, there's no judgment, right? This, this could be your chance to decide. This is, this is your opportunity to now get clear on like, what is the destination that is exciting for you? But the other thing too, is that every, every great captain knows when they're going to get to the destination.
Starting point is 00:19:18 Imagine being on a cruise ship and you're going to Mexico, right? And the, and the captain gets on, on board and they, on this, on the, uh gets on board on the speakerphone or intercom or whatever, and they say, hey, we're going to be in Mexico someday. Whatever we get there, we get there. That would be, yeah, a lot of people would have an issue with that. And so I think a lot of people would have an issue with that. And so, you know, I think a lot of times like we approach our goals that way. Right. Where it's like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:49 Not only just our goals, our entire lives. Right. So every great captain has that destination in mind, the timing of when they're going to be arriving. And also they have different routes that they can take, right? Different directions to go, different speeds to go, different spots that they're going to hit along the way in order to either like refuel or have an experience, you know, in order to be ready for the next experience, right? So there's these many checkpoints and destinations along the way. So where are you heading? Where are you taking your ship? What's the speed that you're taking your
Starting point is 00:20:25 ship? When are you going to arrive at your destination? There's just some questions just to kind of sit with. Yeah. I think that, that it comes down to knowing what you want and then making sure, you know, a time that you have to hit it. I think one of the beautiful things, and we spoke about it towards the beginning, but we didn't dive super deep into it of just having the time that you have to hit it by people's brains. I don't know why it is this way work really well when there's a deadline, right? Like when is your most productive day? If you're, you know, working in an office the day before you go on vacation, why? Cause you don't have an option. You need to click off and be completely done. Right. And when you know that, you know, that
Starting point is 00:21:04 you have to click off, you get super productive. So if you know,. And when you know that, you know, that you have to click off, you get super productive. So if you know, okay, I've got to, you know, build my sales team from four to eight people in the next four months. Now you've know what you got to shoot for. Right. If you know, okay, I've got to take my, you know, I did a hundred thousand dollars last quarter. I want to do $200,000 this quarter. Okay, great. Now, you know exactly what it is that you need to do. You know that you have three months to do. You have an entire quarter to do it. You've got to grow by a hundred thousand bucks. What do you need to do differently? Yeah. Yeah. And you know, having these, the, the specifics, uh, also knowing the timeframe
Starting point is 00:21:40 that creates the kind of the pressure, right? Like a lot of people can relate to, I work really well under pressure. Like when we need to get something done, we find a way to get it done. And that's what challenges us and shapes us to be the business owner or the, the, the person that we're meant to become that ultimately shapes what's possible for us. And I love this because everything, I just love business so much. I'm so glad that we're doing this by the way. Like these podcasts are so, so much fun because like what happens in our business is always a reflection of what we need to work on. Right. So if there's something that like is just not going well in your business,
Starting point is 00:22:21 it's probably because that's showing up in other areas of your life that came from you. You've got to take full ownership of that. And by the way, like, even if like you have an employee that screws something up, you've got to take full ownership and full responsibility for that mistake. And not saying that like you cause that person, but there was something that either you did or didn't do that created that. Yep. And so when we take full ownership, we can then allow our business to be the mirror that we need in order to become the highest version of ourselves that can create anything that we want and set
Starting point is 00:22:55 bigger and bigger goals so that we can get to the destinations that we want along the way. Yeah. There's two things that I always tell people that I love more than anything else because they fully reflect what's going on in your own life and your own mindset. Number one is fitness. If you're not working out the way that you want to, if you're not eating the way that you want to, there's something that you're fucking up in there. And the way you do one thing is the way you do everything. So if you're messing up in your fitness or if you're messing up in the way that you're eating,
Starting point is 00:23:19 you're also messing up and coming up short or not listening to yourself or doing what it is that you need to do in other areas of your life. The second thing as well is business. And that's why I love business as much as I do. It's because business will show you where you're not showing up. If your business is not growing, I guarantee you, neither are you. I say this to our sales reps that we have. If you have a shitty week, I guarantee you, you didn't do any personal development. I guarantee you didn't read, right? If you have a shitty week, it's usually that whatever is happening outside of you is actually a reflection of what's happening inside of you. Yeah. A hundred percent. Yeah. And you know,
Starting point is 00:24:00 how you do one thing is how you do everything. Like this is this podcast. This episode is not just about business, right? Like having the, the must should and could goals and having that specific and measurable formula for creating the goals and really setting the commitments and making the decisions, not just in your business, but also your health, the relationships, like, what are some relationships that need to be nurtured? How many more people do you need to know? Right. Um, finance, how much money do you need to save? How much debt do you need to pay off? Right. Having some specific and measurable intentions around that as a parent, if you've got kids, like this is the most, like for
Starting point is 00:24:42 me as a father, like just stepping into that and knowing that everything that I do, everything that I, I, everything I do and don't do right. That's going to be passed on in some way, shape or form. And so that's like ultra accountability. But how I show up in my business also is how I show up as a, as a father. Yeah. as a father. Yeah. And you know, ultimately like if, if we're committed to being of highest and best use and just contributing as much as we can to our business, contributing as much as we can to the people around us, having goals to challenge us and, and having these, having a relationship with our goals where these aren't just goals. These are decisions. I'm going to decide to become
Starting point is 00:25:22 this person. I'm going to decide to become this person. I'm going to decide to make this level of impact. That's when we can take full control and really manifest the life that we want. Yeah. I love that phrase of goals are make your goals decisions, right? Because Tony Robbins always says your life can change at any moment. It just requires a decision. Yeah. Right. So you can be out there listening and you might not have, might not even have a business. You just want to start a business. Yeah. Right? So you can be out there listening and you might not have, might not even have a business. You just want to start a business one day.
Starting point is 00:25:49 Maybe you haven't even thought of starting a business, but for some reason, you're just listening to this podcast and listening to this, continue to keep on talking and talking and talking. All you have to do is say, you know what?
Starting point is 00:25:58 Tomorrow, I'm going to wake up. I'm going to figure out what I want and I'm going to work my ass off towards it. And I'm going to be a different person tomorrow than I have been my entire life. And that's all it comes down to. One of my favorite quotes is from Alan Watson. He says, you're under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago.
Starting point is 00:26:13 And so if you're out there, you're under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago. The sales rep that you were five minutes ago, the VP that you were five minutes ago, the entrepreneur that you were five years ago, the person has a sudden five years ago, the person has a sudden five minutes ago, the person has a side hustle five minutes ago. You don't have to be any of the people that you were five minutes ago. You can literally make a decision in this moment
Starting point is 00:26:33 that you're going to be different, that you're going to figure out what your goals are. You're going to get very clear on them and you're going to work your ass off every single day and have that unwavering faith. And as long as you just don't give up, you'll eventually get there one day. Yeah. And that's the epitome of a decision. If you wake up tomorrow and nothing's changed, you didn't actually decide.
Starting point is 00:26:52 Yeah. So a decision like it 100% will happen. And the beautiful thing about decisions, if you wake up tomorrow and don't do anything differently, that was also a decision. It's not like, it's just like, oh yeah, today's just the same day. No bullshit. You decided that today was going to be the same day, but just the way that you decided that today will be the same day and you'll be the same person.
