So once again, if you're interested in my group coaching, send me an email rob at mwfmotivation.com. Today we'll be talking about breaking your routines and what the
Starting point is 00:01:52 importance of breaking your routines are. And as Benjamin Franklin says, most people die by 25, but are not actually buried until 75. And what does that mean? It means that most people develop a comfort zone and most people get into routines and they stay there for the rest of their lives and don't make anything great from themselves because of it. Now, clearly what I want to help you do is to break your routines, to break through your comfort zone in order to make something great of yourself. Now, why do people have comfort zones? Why do people have routines? Well, because your brain wants to go on autopilot because of the fact, there's two things.
Starting point is 00:02:32 It wants to go on autopilot because of the fact that you have a brain that uses a ton of energy whenever you're using it. And so it wants to go on autopilot so it doesn't have to use as much energy. A perfect example of that is if you've ever driven home and then you get home and you're like, wait, how the heck did I just get here? The reason why is because your brain is just on autopilot. It starts to do things. It wants to not have to think and not have to use a lot of energy in order to get certain things done. So there's that reason, which is why you have routines and you have comfort zones. And the second reason why you have a comfort zone routines is because your brain is designed to keep you safe. That's the only thing it's designed to do.
Starting point is 00:03:10 So whenever you've been doing something for a little while and you are still alive, your brain is saying to keep doing this means that I will stay safe. If I don't break through this comfort zone, if I stay in this comfort zone for as long as possible, I at least know that I'm gonna be alive because all your brain is designed to do is to keep you alive and keep you safe and keep you healthy. Now, we don't need to worry about safety like we used
Starting point is 00:03:36 to 50,000 years ago. We don't have saber-toothed tigers that are jumping out at us. So we need to figure out ways to break through our routines and to stop doing the exact same thing every single day. We need to figure out ways to take ourselves out of our comfort zones because comfort zones is where dreams go to die. No great idea or great person has ever come from staying inside of a comfort zone. If you think about the people that you admire the most, those are people that constantly push through their comfort zones and constantly try to do things that are completely out of the ordinary. Therefore, one of the things that you should think about doing is how can I daily push myself out of my comfort zone? How can I daily break routines
Starting point is 00:04:20 that I have? And if you think about it, why would you want to break routines? Well, if you're not where you want to be right now, the reason why is because you've developed routines that some of them might be good routines and patterns and habits that are good, but you've also developed some that are bad that you want to try to get rid of. And Einstein says to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results is insanity. So therefore, if you continue to keep routines that are not serving you and not getting you to where you want to be, if you're not where you want to be right now, clearly there are some routines and some comfort zones and some patterns and habits that you need to break in order to get to the next level of your life. And so the easiest way to think about it is this.
Starting point is 00:05:06 If you go to the gym and you go and you, let's say you're doing curls and you have 25 pounds in your arms and you do 25 pounds. The first few times you do it, it will put strain on it, you know, and then you'll get sore if you've never worked out before. But if you keep lifting the exact same way, 25 pounds, every single time that you walk in, what's going to happen? Your muscles are not going to continue to grow anymore. The reason why is because if you think about it, in order to grow, in order for your growth to
Starting point is 00:05:36 occur in your muscles, it happens when stress is put on the muscle. That's how growth happens in your life. When stress is put on your life, when stress is put on your comfort zone when you're stressing yourself to push yourself past the point where you're just a little bit uncomfortable with my sales reps we used to always talk about comfort zones and say that your mind is like a plastic bag once you pull it and open it and expand it it will never be the same size again and that's how you should think about your comfort zones and your routines. If you can push yourself outside your comfort zone, you will never be the same again. Your growth will continue to go outward and never go in reverse. And that's what you have to think about. And so the challenge that I want to give you for today is this. How can we figure
Starting point is 00:06:23 out a way to get you out of your comfort zone every single day? And let me give you a couple of examples. Super simple things, very easy to do. But if you're someone who has anxiety or has stress or someone who is just not comfortable going out and talking to people, you feel like you're not outgoing or you might be an introvert. And even if you're none of those, maybe you're an extrovert, whatever it is, let's try to figure out ways to get you out of your comfort zone. So let me give you a couple examples that I want to give you. Number one, talk to somebody that you don't know once a day. That could be a goal of yours.
Starting point is 00:06:54 They could be the same sex. They could be a different sex. Doesn't really matter. Talk to somebody and have a real longer conversation. And you'll realize I had a long conversation with a guy in PetSmart today. And we were talking about shih tzus. And at first, I started talking to him on accident. We were just talking about something because he noticed the dog that we had with us. And I didn't really want to get into a longer conversation with him. But then I started talking
Starting point is 00:07:16 to him. I was like, well, let me continue this conversation. Let me keep going and talking to him. So it could be same sex. It could be different sex. It doesn't really matter. Another way to push yourself out of your comfort zone is whenever you go to check out, just ask for 20% off. Just ask for a discount every single time that you check out. I kid you not. I offered this and said this to people in my group coaching a few months ago. And one of the girls that's in there, Julie, if she's listening, she'll hear it. She got 20% off of a bag. And I think the bag was like, you know, like a $600 bag or something like that, that she was getting. So 20% off of 600 bucks, that's $120 off. The only reason why was just because she said, screw it. Let me see if I
Starting point is 00:07:52 should just ask for 20% off and see if they'll do it. Right. And a lot of times, if you just say, Hey, can I get 10% off? Can I get 20% off? And they say, why just say, I don't know, because I'm a fun person. I don't know because, you know, I think that, uh, I think it'd be good to give it to me. And a lot of times they just go, okay. And they'll just give you the discount, but that's another way to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Uh, another way that I love, and this is something that I recommend. This is from, uh, Tim Ferriss at the four hour work week where he says, next time you're in a Starbucks or a coffee shop, just lay down on the ground in the middle of the coffee shop for a minute, just a minute. You don't have to do
Starting point is 00:08:27 anything. Just lay down on the ground. Just do something that is different than what society says that we should do because we all know to keep fitting in and keep being like everybody else is going to make your life exactly like everybody else. And we can agree that the people that you admire are the people who stand out and they're not like everybody else. So why not just start doing the things that are completely against what society says that we should do and what we've been raised to do. I'm not saying go out and commit crimes. Don't think that's what I mean. But do something crazy. Just go out and lay in the middle of a floor in a Starbucks or next time you're in a restaurant, whatever it is, go out and get rejected. There's a great video of a guy who did, I think it was 100 days of rejection.
Starting point is 00:09:05 He just tried to get rejected. He was super shy. He had anxiety speaking with people, and he just said, I'm gonna do this video vlog, and what I'm gonna do is I'm just gonna go 100 days trying to get rejected. And he just asked for crazy, bogus things that he never thought that people would say yes to,
Starting point is 00:09:17 and he got rejected a lot, but then he also had a ton of people say yes and do these crazy things for him that he never thought that people would do. So get rejected. Another one, one that I love personally because I've done it, travel somewhere you've never been before all by yourself, 100%. Male or female, it is safe. You can do it. I promise you this. I met tons of people, tons of males and tons of females that were traveling solo throughout Europe when I was traveling for three months by myself. So it is safe in most places to do it. Travel by yourself. If you think that it's unsafe and you're going to a city that you know is safe, and I'm not saying go to like, you know, Iraq by
Starting point is 00:09:56 yourself, but what I'm saying is just travel somewhere you've never been all by yourself and make yourself have to develop conversations or develop relationships with people that you don't know. Easy one, take a different route to work or on the way back from work. Go and get lost. Discover things you've never done before. Go to different restaurants. All of these things are different. Walk down different streets when you take your dog for a walk. Take risks you normally wouldn't take. What you're trying to do is you're trying to develop the mindset of, hey, I'm going to do stuff differently. I'm not going to allow myself to get into comfort zones. I'm going to notice comfort zones that I have in my life. I'm going
Starting point is 00:10:33 to notice routines that I have in my life, and I'm going to force myself to break through them and to not allow myself to get into these comfort zones. This is the reason for this, is to start making yourself realize that you have habits and patterns. Become extremely self-aware of your habits and patterns, and the ones that are good, keep. The ones that are not good, get rid of. So that is my challenge for you.
Starting point is 00:10:57 If you have any crazy things that you do and you have any crazy videos or pictures or stories after you break routines and do something out of your comfort zone, send me an email, rob at mwfmotivation.com.
