Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial.
And if you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another
podcast episode. Today, because of obviously the crazy environment that we happen to be
in, I'm going to talk about how to brainwash yourself for happiness, how to brainwash yourself to have a iron mind. As you may have noticed over the past
few episodes, I've kind of had a little bit of a theme with the current situation in the world,
in the United States, in the news, and everyone that you might see. And I wanted to talk about
how you can make sure that you are mentally just, you're just a fort, like nothing came into it.
You just have this mental barrier where you are just so, this mental fortitude is so strong that nobody can break into it.
Because, you know, I want you guys to be smart.
I want you guys to be healthy.
I want you guys to, you know, not spread any virus that might be out there.
But I also want to, what
I do care about is how you feel throughout the day.
I don't want you to live your life in fear.
I don't want you to live your life in worry, and I don't want you to live your life in
anxiety because living in those states will bring your immune system down.
And so what I want to talk about is how to actually set a schedule.
So you and I are going to set a schedule of what your daily happiness brainwashing is
going to look like.
You are going to be in charge over the next few weeks to literally brainwash yourself
to be happy, to brainwash yourself to be positive, to brainwash yourself to be grateful, to brainwash
yourself to see the beautiful things that happen to exist in your life. And as you can see, we're starting to build up to these. I talked about, you know,
the virus of fear. I talked about how to build the perfect morning routine. Now let's talk about not
just your morning routine. I will talk about that as well, but I also want to talk about your daily
routine and what you're doing throughout the day, because now more than ever, you need to make sure
that you're building this mental fortitude. And so I want to try to help you out into having the strongest mentality that
you possibly can. So the first thing that I want to talk about is as soon as you wake up in the
morning, as soon as you wake up in the morning, just so you guys know, you know, when I've, I was
curious about this not too long ago, when I woke up and I had this crazy anxiety and I was like,
why am I so anxious when I wake up in the morning? And so I started doing research on it
and people are actually the, you know, statistically the most anxious as soon as they wake up in the
morning. And the reason why is because the highest levels of cortisol that are running through your
blood statistically, you know, it depends on, you know, what happens throughout your day and how,
you know, the internal and
external environment in your life. But usually what wakes somebody up is actually cortisol.
That's usually when it's the highest in your blood is in the morning. Cortisol is the stress
hormone. So if you wake up and you feel anxious and you feel anxiety, that's not something that's
odd, just so you know. You're not weird. So for those of you guys that feel that way,
that's not something that's odd, just so you know. You're not weird. So for those of you guys that feel that way, take a deep breath. There's nothing wrong with you. But the thing that I want
to say is as soon as you wake up in the morning, do not, do not, do not look at your phone.
Do not go on social media and do not read the news, the newspaper, watch the news,
turn on CNN or Fox News or any of those things. As soon as you wake up in the morning,
if your stress levels are already pretty high because of the fact that you have extra
cortisol in your blood, why would you want to look at your phone? And I don't mean look at just
social media. Obviously, that's big. But don't look at your phone, period. Because they've actually
found statistically that the addiction between a human's brain and their phone, because of the
colors and the blue that happens to
be in it without going too in-depth on it is extremely strong. And so what you're doing is
you're literally, if you wake up and look at your phone immediately, you're basically like a drug
addict that's been off of drugs for a little while. And then you go straight back to just
getting a little bit taste of the drugs and trying to stay away. You're starting that addiction again.
So as soon as you wake up in the morning, how long
can you stay away from your phone? This is a game that I think you should play with yourself.
How long can you stay away from your phone? An hour, two hours. Could you imagine if you
woke up and had a beautiful morning routine and you worked on yourself for 30 minutes, an hour,
you know, an hour and a half, whatever it might be. And you don't look at your phone once you
don't get into that trap. How much better could you feel? So the first thing I want you
to think about is you're waking up. Can you develop a strategy for waking up, a schedule
for waking up? No phone, no social media, no news. As soon as you wake up in the morning,
what would make you feel the best? This is what we want to think about now. What would make you feel the best?
For some people, they love to meditate in the morning.
For me, I've meditated in the morning many, many, many, many, many times,
but it's usually only for 10 or 15 minutes.
If I want to do a long meditation session, like an hour, 45 minutes, 30 minutes,
any of those, usually it's not in the morning because I'll start to fall back asleep.
And so can you take three to four minutes and just do a quick meditation? If you want to do longer,
amazing. Definitely do more. But you know, get up, wash your face, brush your teeth. You get up
and you go over, you go to a little meditation station and you do some breathing. And all I want
you to do is just don't focus on anything. If you don't
have to just focus on the air going in and out of your nostrils. That's it. Just the,
just the feeling of the nostrils going in and out. That's all you got to do. When I went to my
10 day silent meditation retreat, that was what they taught us how to do, how to focus on the,
the air going in and out of your nostrils. And if you feel like you can't stop your mind, that's okay. That's natural.
That's part of being a human. You know, it's, it's what your brain does. Your brain thinks
you don't want it to stop, but you would like to kind of be in control of what it's thinking about.
So if you feel like your brain's going too much, think about what you're grateful for.
So you have to think about it this way. I love to start my day with intention. I love to be as
intentional as possible. So think about what you can be intentional about. You know, think about
the people in your life. Think about the fact that you've been blessed with, you know, some
good genes, that you have your health, that you have all four of your limbs, you have working
eyes, you can smell. That still works. You can feel, you can taste. The sun is out. What can
you find? Can you find as many things as possible to be deeply, deeply grateful for? And then take
a journal out. Take out a pen and paper, have a journal and write down your gratitude journal.
What, what are you grateful for today? Write down three things to be grateful for. That's it.
Nothing crazy. And they don't even have to be, I would actually prefer that they're not big things,
not even your house. It could be the wind on your face. The way that when you went out to go get the
morning paper, hopefully actually you didn't get the paper because you're not reading the news,
right? But you went to go take your dog to go pee on the front lawn and you can feel the sun on your
face and you can be grateful for the way the sun was warming your face in the morning. And the fact
that winter is starting to turn into spring, what can you be grateful for? Write that down. What are
three things, three things that I'm grateful for today are these. Then you close your eyes after
you do it and you just take some deep breaths and you
allow the thoughts of that gratitude to sink into your body and for your thoughts of them to become
feelings inside of your body. Another thing that I think is great to journal in the morning
is to make a list, make a massive list of what makes you happy. What makes you happy? Write down
as many things as you possibly can think of. And then what you do every single morning is you plan how to put as many of
those things into your life as possible. As many of those things into your life as possible.
How do you do that? I had a good friend that, that, uh, you know, he lost a lot of money when,
uh, like, you know, around $180 million and, uh,
long story, don't need to tell you about it, but he said something to me that stuck with me.
And he said, I realized when I was depressed after that, that I would not allow my depression
or my happiness to be left up to chance. I would not allow my depression or my happiness to be
left up to chance. I decided that I was going to be happy
and figure out a way to be happy every single day. So he made a massive list of everything that makes
him happy. And then all he would do in the morning is just try to put as many of the, look at the
list and say, how can I put as many of these things into my day as possible? Do you want to be happy?
You do, right? You want to know the easy way to do it? Make a list of as many things as possible
that makes you happy. And then try to do as many of those things you possibly can. It's simple. Next thing,
let's talk about coffee. Guys, I love coffee. Believe me. I told you my morning routine of
how I drink yerba mate instead of coffee now. But if you're naturally an anxious person or you feel
like you worry too much, try to stay away from coffee for the next couple of weeks.
Drink some tea instead. You can drink tea with caffeine, without caffeine. Maybe try to wean yourself off of caffeine so you feel like you don't need it. If you're anxious or you worry,
how can you move away from that? If you feel like it makes you more anxious. For me,
I know that sometimes coffee does make me anxious. It makes me jittery. And if you wake up in the
morning, you have lots of cortisol running through your brain and your body and you, and you immediately
go to coffee. It just takes your anxiety to a whole other level. Okay. Next thing, shower.
You already know what I'm going to recommend. I recommend cold showers. Why? It wakes you up.
It gets, I mean, there's just, I don't even need to tell you. Just Google benefits of cold showers.
You'll see all the benefits of cold shower.
I just know for a fact,
it is impossible to be depressed or anxious or worry
when you're sitting in a freezing cold shower.
It like resets everything for you, right?
And as I said, have a shower playlist.
Have a playlist that gets you fired up
while you're going through that in the shower, right?
Have a feel good playlist for the rest of your day.
If you're not listening to music, listen to podcasts, go onto YouTube and find something
really good. Listen to and watch only what will raise you up. Listen to and watch only what will
raise you up, what will make you feel better. Have a feel good playlist where it's like,
like, and have a song. There's songs for me. Like I know that I
have a stressful song that I don't even know how it became my song, but it's so calming and it's
so peaceful. And anytime I used to get super stressed out, um, I used to put it on. And when
I ran my, my office for, for Cutco, I used to listen to the song. I used to have very stressful
moments in my And my receptionists
and my assistant managers that worked under me, they knew when my door was shut, give me five
minutes. And what I would do is I would go into that room. I put my headphones on in my office
and I would listen to this song. It's called Out of Africa theme song. A lot of you guys are
probably like, oh yes, I know that song. I love it. Some of you guys have never heard of it before.
It's called the Out of Africa theme song.
It's just so calming. It's literally like the calmest song in the world for me. Uh, so it's just what works for me, you know, it might not be where it works for you, but, uh, I do know that
there is a, there's quite a few songs that have been made that are, you know, if you Google the,
um, what are they, the, the, the calmest songs in the world. Uh, the most relaxing song in the
world. If you want to listen to it, uh, I don't know how they found this out, but there was many,
many articles written about this song. It's called weightless part one, weightless part one
by Marconi union, M A R C O N I space union. And it's called weightless part one,
super calming song. Whenever I'm on a plane,
I'm trying to fall asleep. I usually put that on repeat, but just start thinking about this.
If you notice, I'm just saying, be very intentional with every moment of your day,
with everything that's coming into your brain, to the way that you wake up, to the way that you
meditate, the way that you journal, to the way you figure out what makes you happy, to what you
drink, to the music you listen to, and the podcast you listen to, and the YouTube you listen to, and all of those
things. Think about them so that you can go, does this serve me or does this not serve me? If it
doesn't serve you anymore or it makes you more anxious, well then it's probably a good idea to
get rid of that thing. Wouldn't you agree? 100%. Yeah, so let's try to get rid of the things that
don't serve you. Another thing that might not serve you is what about the people that you surround yourself with?
Are there people that are not serving you?
Are there people that are just like, ah, yeah, this is not the person that's bringing me up.
This person's bringing me down.
What about your house, your external environment?
You have the people around you, but also your house.
You know, is it dirty?
Is it messy?
What would make you like your house more?
Is it have stale? You know, sometimes a room just feels stale. What if you just open up
all the windows and let a draft come through? Is it too dirty? Do you need to have somebody come
and clean it? Is it set up for your happiness? Should you organize a little bit more? What would
make you happier? Just be more intentional with your internal environment and with your external
environment. And what you'll notice is that naturally you'll start being happier and people
are going to come up to you and say what are you doing and you're just going to be like i'm being
intentional i'm just doing the things that i love you know if going outside and being in nature
makes you happy then go outside and be in nature and people like oh i don't have time to go outside
and be in nature though rob yes you do because you do. Because if it makes you happy, it makes you more productive. It makes you work
better. It makes you more creative. So taking an hour out of your day to go on a walk out in nature,
maybe go through a park or whatever it is, and just sit there with no phone and just breathe
deeply and just look at the animals or look at nature and put your feet in the grass or whatever
it is that you need to do. If that brings you peace, then naturally it will help you in all other areas of life.
It might seem like you're being unproductive, which is what us in the Western world, we can't
deal with not being productive, but it's just like a bow and arrow. If you have a bow and arrow,
in order for it to shoot forward, what do you have to do? You have to pull it back. And the
harder you pull it back, the further it's going to go forward. So sometimes the more that you disconnect and go out and do absolutely nothing, that doing
absolutely nothing actually makes you more productive in the long run. So if you're trying
to be happy in these crazy times and live in a beautiful state, these are the keys to do it.
Take out a pen and paper and start to be very, very diligent on how you spend every single moment of your life.
What you're thinking, what you're listening to,
all of the environment that you surround yourself with.
If you meditate, if you journal, what you drink,
the shower that you take, the music that you listen to,
the playlist, all of these things,
the people that you surround yourself with
and the house you live in as well.
So that's what I got for you for today's episode.
