in your life, if you've been doing the same thing, if you're stuck in the same comfort zone, if you've
been doing the same thing for six months or a year, five years or 10 years or 20 years, the question
that I have for you is if you've been in that comfort zone for so long, when are you going to
get out of it? When are you going to do something different? And Einstein says to do the same thing over and over again and expect different
results is insanity. But you have to realize a lot of people out there do the same thing over
and over again and expect that their life is going to change. And so if you're someone who's
interested in a little bit of change, if you want your life to be different, if you've been stuck in
the same comfort zone for a while and you want
to get out of it, maybe my group coaching might be right for you.
So send me an email, rob at mwfmotivation.com and we can chat about it and see if it's right
for you.
Now, that being said, I do want to talk about your comfort zone.
I do want to talk about going out past your comfort zone.
I do want to talk about why comfort zones exist in the first place and how to get past
them.
So as far as a comfort zone goes, the reason why you have a comfort zone is because there
are still stupid parts of your brain that tell you that you need to stay inside of this
comfort zone.
Now, I'll give you a perfect example, right?
And you might have seen this video.
This video went semi-viral on Facebook of mine. If you don't follow me on Facebook, it's facebook.com slash MWF motivation.
But I put this video up and it was talking about comfort zones. And this is basically what it is.
The reason why we have comfort zones because of 10, 20, 50,000 years ago, when we were not living
in houses, or maybe we were cavemen, maybe we weren't, depends on your beliefs and what science
actually is true. What's not true. Doesn't matter what your beliefs are.
But what I'm saying though, is there was a point in time where we did not have the same safety that
we have now, right? I'm in Rome right now. And I know that when I walk out onto my street and go
out of my apartment, that there's not going to be any lion that's going to come up and attack me.
Now, 20, 40, 50,000 years ago, that wasn't a
guarantee. And so we knew that if I was inside of my comfort zone back then, it might've been a cave,
right? Might've been a cave that we lived in. And that comfort zone was where I would not be killed.
So my brain is designed to do one thing and one thing only, and that's designed to keep me alive.
It wants to keep me inside of this comfort zone. Why? Because it knows that I
am alive here, I am safe here, and I will not die here. Now when I walk outside of
this cave, you know if this is 50,000 years ago, when I walk outside of this
cave there's no guarantees I might be killed outside of that comfort zone. Now
that threat does not exist to you anymore in 2017 at all. You don't have to
worry about, I don't have to worry about walking outside
of my apartment in Rome and a lion walking down the street and attacking me and killing me.
So therefore my brain, that part of my brain still exists that worries about the possibility
of danger, that worries about the possibility of actually dying, right? Now I know I'm not
going to be attacked by a lion. So what happens? My brain finds other things to worry about,
other fears to keep me inside of this comfort zone, other fears of things that don't
really matter. What do I mean by that? What people think of me, the fear of being rejected,
the fear of being judged, the fear of success, the fear of failure. What used to be the fear
of getting your face ripped off by a lion is now replaced with, man, I wonder what people are going to think about me. Like that's,
that's our fears that we have nowadays. 20, 40, 50,000 years ago was man, my face might get ripped
off by a lion. Now we're like, oh man, John might not like my proposal. Like that's the type of
stuff that we worry about nowadays. So why do the comfort zones exist? Because 10, 20, 40, 50,000 years ago, maybe even more,
it was good for them to exist. It's what kept us alive. But now they do nothing for you because
your brain finds stupid things to fear to keep you in this comfort zone. Now, you know that if
you do something different and you go and maybe you've never made a hundred thousand dollars a
year and your goal is to make a hundred,000. You consciously know you want to make $100,000, but your brain, that stupid part of your brain
doesn't know that if you make $100,000, you won't die. You know you won't die, but that part of your
brain, the amygdala does not know that you won't die if you make $100,000. Why? Because it's
something outside of your comfort zone. It's something that you've never done before. And any change is automatically 100% every single time seen as a threat by the brain,
because it thinks this is something we've never done before. It might get us killed. Just like
we've never walked down this path in the forest. There might be a lion, right? You've never walked
down that path towards success or towards making a hundred thousand dollars. There might be a lion, right? You've never walked down that path towards success or towards making $100,000.
There might be something to fear.
There might be something that would kill us in there.
Now, you know consciously that's not actually true,
but there's parts in your brain that still hold you back, right?
And this is where self-sabotage comes from.
This is where your paradigm comes from.
This is why your paradigm exists,
is because
of the fact that you are actually, actually your brain is subconsciously holding yourself back.
And this is why I talk to people about why you need to get on my webinars. This is why I have
group coaching is because I want to help people understand their paradigm, understand the problems
with it, understand how we create habits to hold our back and to keep ourselves in the exact same place. And we create habits to self-sabotage.
And so the thing I want to ask you is how long have you been in this comfort zone?
Has it been one, two, five, 10, 20, 40 years that you've been in the exact same comfort zone?
And how long are you going to stay there? And the reason why you're there is because you're
holding yourself back subconsciously or consciously. You're holding yourself back
to keep yourself inside of this cave, quote unquote, this comfort zone, right? And so you
have to think about that is how am I holding myself back? Well, one way you're holding yourself
back is by doing the same thing over and over and over again, expecting different results.
You're not pushing yourself past what is
comfortable. If you go to the gym and you lift five pounds every single day of the exact same
weight, of the exact same amount of sets and exact same amount of reps, your muscles will not grow.
You have to push your muscles past the point of comfort. Your brain and your comfort zone is the
exact same way. You have to push your brain past the point of comfort. That brain and your comfort zone is the exact same way. You have to push your brain
past the point of comfort. That is where you see growth. That is where you see muscle growth. You
push it past the point of comfort. That is where you see personal growth. You push it past the
point of comfort. You get to the point where you start to feel the physical fear inside of your
stomach where you're like, holy crap, I don't know if I should go and give this proposal or speak in front of these people or go up to that girl and ask her out.
You feel that physical fear and you say, screw it, I'm going to do it anyways.
Because you know that fear is keeping you inside of your comfort zone.
And if you're listening to this podcast,
the reason why is because you don't want to be in the same position
that you are right now next year.
But the difference is if you keep doing the same thing over and over next year,
at this time, you're going to be in the exact same spot.
So the question I have for you is how long are you going to stay in that comfort zone?
Now that you know the reason why comfort zones exist,
now that you know the reason is because it's trying, it's your brain trying to keep you alive.
But now that we don't have the threat of lions,
it's just worrying about other things.
It's trying to find other things to worry about,
to fear where you might possibly die.
And even though you're not going to die,
your brain is still thinking there's a possibility
that there might be some threat
because any change is automatically seen as a threat.
Why do people love comfort zones?
Why do people love staying in the same spot? Or why do people hate change? It's because your brain sees change as
a threat. But you know consciously, in order to have the life that you want, you need to make
change. In order to have the life that you want to live, where your kids look back and they're
impressed, or you look back and you're impressed and you
have no regrets, you're going to have to become uncomfortable. You know that,
but you've been holding yourself back for a while. When are you going to stop holding yourself back?
And sometimes it just takes the extra knowledge of exactly how your brain works in order to get
to that comfort zone and push past it. Your brain is not like a rubber band.
If you pull the rubber band apart,
it's gonna go back to the exact same spot.
Your brain is like a plastic bag.
If you pull a plastic bag apart,
it will never be the same size again.
And that's exactly how your brain works.
So you find your comfort zone,
you push a little bit past it,
and you'll never be the same as you were before.
And then you find your comfort zone again the next day,
or the next week, or the next month,
and you push a little bit past, you keep pushing that comfort zone.
And what you'll realize is that you've expanded your capacity past what you ever thought you could have done or could have been or where it ever could have gone. If you look back in six
months and you keep pushing it and pushing it, you're like, I am a completely different person.
If you look back in a year, for me, I've been on this personal growth journey for 12 years.
I'm not the same person that I was 12 years ago. I'm a completely different person. But the only reason why I'm in
this position is because I've been constantly trying to push my boundaries. And so for you,
if you're stuck in this comfort zone, if you're stuck in the same spot, you have to constantly
push your boundaries. If you have a notebook and pen, write that down. I need to constantly push
myself past my comfort zone, past my boundaries, past where I think I should go. That's the reason
why comfort zones exist is because for our species to survive, it was one of the best things to have.
It probably was the best thing to have is a comfort zone. Now in 2017, it does absolutely
nothing for you.
Get rid of your comfort zones.
Understand why they exist.
Understand that you are self-sabotaging and you have to get past those comfort zones.
And so what I would do if I were you
is take a pen and paper right now
and ask yourself, what is my comfort zone?
How do I hold myself back?
How do I self-sabotage?
What do I need to do to push myself past my comfort zone?
And you do that,
and you push yourself just a little bit every day or every week or every month. And in a year,
you'll look back and be a completely different person because the worst thing is looking back
next year and seeing that you're in the exact same position that you were last year. So if you
