I've been posting videos almost daily during the week of just short two to five minute motivational clips because people kept asking for more. So that being said, today, what I'm going to be talking about is I had a conversation with a coaching client of mine, and she was asking me what I do when I have bad weeks or bad days or whatever they might be. And I thought about it for a second. I was like, man, I don't think I've really had bad weeks or bad days in like a long time. I cannot really remember. I think the last time that I really had like a bad day or a bad week or something was in 2010. And the reason why is because it's come to the point now where I don't really see stuff as good or bad enough to affect my life in that type of way. Obviously, stuff happens in my life, which could be seen as bad. But what I try to do is try to
Starting point is 00:03:45 look at them objectively and say, what can I learn from this situation? So when she asked me this question, and she was one of my one-on-one coaching clients, she said, what do you do when you have bad weeks? And I thought about it. I was like, I don't know. I don't have bad weeks. And then I was like, well, if you were to think about it, these last three weeks that I've had, and this is in the conversation, these last three weeks that I've had would have probably been considered bad by most people's standards. And I was like, let me give you an idea of what the last three weeks of my life have been. Three weeks ago, my grandfather passed away and I was there and in the room when it happened, which if you listened to last week's episode, you already knew that. So that would be bad to most people's standards to have that happen. So that was three weeks ago. Then the second week, I got a patent infringement,
Starting point is 00:04:35 quote unquote, cease and assist letter. Someone saying they were infringing on their patents, which is pretty much a load of BS, but whatever. So we went from week one, my grandfather died. Week two, got a patent infringement problem, which made us have to stop selling one of our products. And then week three, which was the week right before I spoke with my coaching client, my grandmother passed away. So in three weeks, I got two grandparents that passed away and I had a lawsuit, not a lawsuit, but a cease and desist letter because of the fact that there was a quote unquote patent infringement. Most people's standards, I realized that would have been a complete crap month for them. Like they would have just, crap would have hit the fan. They
Starting point is 00:05:22 would have not left the bed. Some people wouldn't have. People would just get pissed off. They'd think that their world is coming to an end. But I've trained myself to realize that the world works this way. You have to understand the world, you're going to have quote unquote bad days. You're going to have quote unquote good days. But when the bad comes and the good comes, all you say is, what can I learn from this situation? What can I learn from this? There is no good or bad. It's just the labels that you place on it. You have to realize that. Nobody can make you feel a certain way either. Nobody can make you feel inferior. You have to give them permission to do so is basically the quote that Eleanor Roosevelt says. It's the exact same thing. You cannot have a bad
Starting point is 00:06:01 week unless you make it a bad week yourself. Am I saying that I didn't cry and miss my grandparents? No, of course I'm not saying that. But I think my grandparents would be pissed off at me if I let that get in the way of having a great life. And having a great life means having a great time all the time, having a great day, having a great week. And to me, I realized that too many times people have something happen to them. It might be something small, but they're just so used to
Starting point is 00:06:33 reacting to something, even something so small in such a negative way that it ruins their entire day. Or even worse, it ruins their entire month or their entire year or whatever it might be. It's just they let it ruin. You have to realize nothing can take control of your life unless you give it permission to. If somebody breaks up with you and you let that ruin your next month, you're giving it permission to ruin the next month. If you go somewhere out in public and somebody makes fun of you or somebody says something, you're giving them permission to let them get into your brain and have that affect you. You're giving them permission. You're in charge of your life. So if you're having a quote unquote bad day, you're giving that day permission to be bad in your brain. The crazy thing about that is you can immediately flip the switch if you pull yourself out of it and say, you know what,
Starting point is 00:07:33 today I'm going to make sure even though the crap hit the fan and it's terrible, everything's going crazy, I'm going to take my journal out and I'm going to see what I can learn from today. There is no good or bad. It's all just learning situations. It's turning into a better person every single day, being better tomorrow than you were today. That's what it is. So you are the one that gives permission. You are the one that's in the driver's seat. Stop. If you're having these things completely derail your day, small things completely derail your week or people derail your day or your week, derail your day. Small things completely derail your week or people derail your day or your week. Stop giving it permission. Stop acting like you are just the passenger on the ship. You're in control of your ship. You're in control of your mind. You're in control of where it's going.
Starting point is 00:08:15 So don't let something ruin your day because ultimately your life is going to be a culmination of all of these different decisions that you make of whether you decide to let something affect you or not. All of your life is going to be a culmination of all of these days put together. You're in charge of whether they're great days, whether they're good days, or whether they're completely crap days. So that being said, if you are having a bad day ever, flip yourself out of it and get out of the little hole that you've dug yourself and realize that you're in control of your day. You're in control of what you do for the rest of the day. So make sure that you take the time to improve yourself and get better every single day. And when you see something like this come up and go, hmm, what can I learn from this? Hmm, this person's a complete a-hole. Hmm,
Starting point is 00:09:01 how can I, what can I learn from them being a complete a-hole? What can I learn from them being a complete a-hole? What can I learn from them? What can I learn from this situation? If I'm having a bad day at work because everyone around me is complete, you know what? Can I take a step back from an outsider's perspective and look at it objectively and go, hmm, what can I learn from this? How can I learn to be better in this situation? I have sometimes people ask me questions. They say, my managers are complete. You know what? I don't want to be there anymore, but I'm there for at least a certain amount of time until I find another job. What can I do? And I say, just look at it from an outsider's perspective. While you're there, go, what can I learn from this person as
Starting point is 00:09:43 I'm there? And you might say, what can I learn from this complete, you know what? Yeah, maybe you learn how not to be a manager. Do you ever think about that? Maybe you learn how not to treat people. You do all these different things and try to figure out how you can become better, even if this person's trying to bring you down. Because ultimately, you're in control of what you think. You're in control of where every single day goes. So that being said, I want to challenge you to have a good week this week and have a good day every single day. When something has the opportunity to derail you in your thoughts, in your happiness, can you have the mental fortitude to not let it?
Starting point is 00:10:22 And if you do this over and over and over again, what you'll realize is in five years or 10 years, nothing is going to affect you anymore. Bad things can happen, but you can look at them and go, all right, what can I learn from this? And you build up this mental fortitude that's so strong, people will look at you and go, why is that? How is John or how is Sally always so calm? Nothing seems to affect them. And that's what starts to happen. You're in control. So if you're allowing these things to take control, regain the control of the ship. Regain everything
Starting point is 00:10:53 because nothing can make you feel a certain way unless you give it permission to.
