Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I'm your host, Rob Dial. If you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast episode. And if you love this podcast, please do me a favor, give us a rating and review, however you listen to us on whatever platform you listen to us. It helps this show grow more than you could possibly imagine. Today, we're going to be talking about how to fully step in to what could be the most badass version of yourself. And what we're going to talk about is the idea, and I want you to play with me on this, the idea of creating what would be an alter ego for yourself. To basically
Starting point is 00:00:46 pretend, just as you did when you were a little kid, that you are someone else. The same way that you could pretend that you are a princess and you fully believe that you are a princess, or you could pretend that you are an astronaut and you fully believe that you are an astronaut. What would it look like as a full-on adult to fully step into and pretend for a day that you are a completely different person? If you're someone who's extremely shy, what would it be like to put on the costume of a confident, outgoing person when you walk into Starbucks today to basically pretend that you are someone else? And it's like a mask, if you can imagine an imaginary mask going on to you,
Starting point is 00:01:25 that you actually decide to put on. Because when you look at the Greek word for personality, most people think that our personality is set in stone. Oh, it's just my personality. It's just who I am. That's how I've always been. But personality, the actual root word for personality comes from persona, which is the Greek word for the actor's mask that they would wear in a theater. So all the way back in Greek days, the masks that they would put on were called their personas. And so when we talk about your personality, who you think you are, it's just a mask that you're deciding to wear. Now, just to be honest with you, we are most of the time unconsciously deciding to put this mask
Starting point is 00:02:05 on every single day. You are unconsciously deciding to be who you were yesterday every single day, but you are making that decision to act the same way you've always acted, to believe what you've always believed, to set the limitations that you've always set. So who you think you are is just a mask that you're deciding to wear. There is nowhere written into the fabric of the universe that you have to be who you currently are or that you will always be who you currently are. That is just a set of beliefs and all beliefs can be changed. So then we go back to how can we start to change our beliefs about ourself? Well, at any time, you can literally decide to be somebody else. You can decide, I no longer want to be the person that I have been. I am going to be a brand new person.
Starting point is 00:02:50 And Alan Watts, you guys know if you've been listening for a long time, one of my favorite quotes is Alan Watts says, you are under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago. You can just decide to release who you are. So you can step into becoming a new person if you really want to. And the idea of, well, I am this version of myself and I'm going to slowly start to progress and step into the version of myself that I want to be. The idea of a slow progression is the problem because you can just decide literally at any moment to just be somebody else. But your idea that it takes time is the problem. Because if you think that it takes time, it will always take time. So how can you release who you think you are
Starting point is 00:03:35 so that you could start to step into who you want to become? So when you're developing the idea of an alter ego, it helps you find hidden potential to achieve your goals. That the quote-unquote you, who you think you are, your personality, the quote-unquote version of you, right now cannot achieve because it's not in your personality. It's not who you are. It might be something that is outside of your comfort zone, or it might just be like, oh, that's just not what I do. That's not who I am. I'm not a confident person. I don't go after my goals. I end up being very lazy. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It's
Starting point is 00:04:08 all just a bunch of stories that are inside of our head. And we can decide to tap into different sides of us depending on what we need in different moments. Different sides of us, different personalities, depending on what it is that we need so that we can get past all of our perceived limitations. Because pretty much every limitation that you have, except for very, very few, are perceived. You have talked yourself into believing your limitations. And this isn't some like crazy weirdo type thing to do. Like there's many famous people throughout the years that have had alter egos. When you look at Beyonce, Beyonce created her alter ego, which was very famous, Sasha Fierce. And the reason why she created this was because
Starting point is 00:04:49 she was really shy and she wasn't confident as a performer, but she thought, Sasha Fierce, I'm going to develop this alter ego so that I can get past all of my shyness and become a really confident performer. When you look at somebody like Lady Gaga, she created Joe Calderon, which was what she created as a way to express more of her masculine side. When you look at David Bowie, David Bowie had Ziggy Stardust, and it was an alter ego that he created to help him achieve massive success as a musician and to be more flamboyant and more theatrical as a character, which he ended up taking that and putting it into his own personality. When you look at like, even all the stories that are created, there's Bruce Wayne who has Batman, there's Clark Kent who is Superman. And then probably the most famous version
Starting point is 00:05:34 that pops into my head when I start thinking about alter egos is when you look at Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant had the alter ego of the Black Mamba. And what happened was he decided at one point in time that he needed to be a different person and he needed to be different on the court than he was in real life. He was a shy young kid. He came into the NBA and he was 18 years old and he was the youngest person into the NBA. And he was watching a movie, Kill Bill, back in 2003.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And he was watching a movie, Kill Bill, back in 2003. And he realized that he needed his regular personality, which is how he was working through every single day and who he was. And then he needed an on-court personality. And he needed somebody that he decided needed to be fierce and needed to be relentless. Somebody who is literally going to strike you down at any moment.
Starting point is 00:06:24 And when you look at that, you realize that you could be a very sweet person, you could be a nice person, but when you're in competition, like Kobe Bryant was, or you're in business or whatever it is that you want, you can have a completely different personality to step into. And so with the idea of the Black Mamba, it was a way for him to try to motivate himself to get into the right mindset before games. And this is what is also known that motivated him to wake up and actually do workouts at four o'clock in the morning because he thought to himself, okay, the average NBA player, the average person in my competition is probably waking up at seven, eight, nine o'clock. They're
Starting point is 00:07:01 probably getting their first workout in around nine, 10 o'clock. And so his idea was, you know, maybe even if they're doing two a days, they might have like a 10 a.m. workout and they might have like a 2 p.m. workout. So what I'm going to do, what the quote unquote black mom is going to do, that's going to just be fierce, relentless, destroy anybody that's in his way, is I'm going to wake up at 3.30 in the morning and I'm going to get a workout in at 4 a.m. I'm going to work out from 4 a.m. to like 7 a.m. I'm going to have my breakfast and then I'm going to have my 10 a.m. workout the same way that they are. And then I'll have my 2 p.m., 3 p.m. workout as well. So when they're getting maybe, you know, at least one workout per day, some of his competitors were getting two workouts per day. I'm going to get in three workouts per
Starting point is 00:07:44 day. I'm going to outwork every single person. There's a story that I heard about one of the NBA players. And I've heard many stories about Kobe Bryant and how fierce he was and how he's just like the black Mamba mentality. And with the Mamba mentality was there was one time where one of the guys was on the court and he was warming up before a game and he noticed he got there and he already heard somebody dribbling. So he's about to play the Lakers and Kobe Bryant's already there. And he's looking at Kobe Bryant working out before the game. And he's like, I'm going to work out longer than this guy. And so he's working out on one side of the court. Kobe Bryant's on the other side of the court. Then this guy's working out and he's working out and he's looking at him and he's like,
Starting point is 00:08:20 man, I'm starting, like we have a game tonight. I'm actually getting really tired. It's two hours into my workout. He's drenched in sweat. And he's like, I don't think I can, I don't want to exhaust myself for tonight. So he's like, I got, he looks over at Kobe Bryant. Kobe Bryant is completely covered. And he's not running like just little tiny workouts. Like he's full on sprints. He's acting like he's in a game. It's hours and hours and hours and hours that he's going. And eventually he's like, all right, I'm done. We have a game tonight. So I need to make sure that I'm rested. And then they play the Lakers and the Lakers ended up beating his team.
Starting point is 00:08:50 And he goes up to Kobe Bryant after, and he's like, man, like what was with that workout before? And he's like, what, like you were full on sprints. You were full on everything. Like I was working out and thought you were eventually gonna come off the court. And Kobe Bryant looks in the eyes and he said, I knew that you were there and I wanted you to know that I'm eventually going to come off the court. And Kobe Bryant looks in the eyes and he said, I knew that you were there.
Starting point is 00:09:05 And I wanted you to know that I'm never going to give up before you do. I will outlast you in every single thing that you do. And most people can look at Kobe Bryant and be like, yeah, he sounds like a dick. But you can also look at him and see like that is the mindset that he had in every aspect of playing the game, which made him as great as he was. And it gave him a way to motivate himself and to become somebody else before the games. And when he adopted this whole idea, what he was able to do, he said, was able to find potential that was inside of him as a basketball player that he didn't know just as quote-unquote Kobe Bryant. You know, he was known for his intense training
Starting point is 00:09:40 that he had after becoming the quote-unquote black Mamba and the way he could maintain focus and mental toughness on the court. And he always attributed back to this Mamba mentality. And there was actually an interview in GQ magazine where they asked Kobe Bryant, they're like, hey, what is the point of having this? And he said, the easiest way I think of it is it makes it easy for me to separate my personal life from my basketball life. You know, he had three daughters, so he didn't want to be a mom mentality when he was with his three daughters. He wanted to be able to be the person he needed to be
Starting point is 00:10:12 for them, but then put this cape on, this mask on whenever he needed to be the basketball player. And he found that it was easier to maintain calmness and focus under pressure when he felt like he was wearing that mask. And so what it really starts to boil down to as you look at this is like, it's not weird to do this. Many people are doing this. How can you start to create your own alter ego? And that's
Starting point is 00:12:02 what we want to step into and start to talk about. And so what I want you to think about is like, what are the qualities and the traits that you wish you had that would help you succeed in whatever it is you're trying to succeed at? You know, for some of you guys listening, you want to develop a super successful business, or you have a business, you want to be more successful. What are the qualities that you want to have when you sit down at your computer, when you walk into your office, when you walk into your store? What are the qualities, the mask that you need to put on in order to be the best businessman or best businesswoman that you can be? And what are the qualities and traits that you wish that you had?
Starting point is 00:12:41 Because what happens is when you develop this alter ego, you can embody your best qualities and you start to create qualities that you wish you had. If you're not a confident person, I'm here to tell you no confident person is born confident. Confidence is something that is developed. It is like a skill set that you work on. So if you want to be more confident, what would that look like? What are the qualities that you want to bring into yourself? The confidence, the finishing what you start, the nothing gets in my way attitude, the no matter what, I'm going to get it done. Or if you're just like, you know what? I want to be the best parent I could possibly be.
Starting point is 00:13:15 Is there an alter ego that you can have for being a parent? Can you be more kind to your children? Can you be more loving? What does that look like? We have someone on our team and their alter ego is that they call themselves the love sergeant, where it's like, they want to be able to keep everybody in place and help everybody succeed and get better, but they want to do it through massive amounts of love. So it doesn't mean that you just have to be a killer and just like mother mentality, plow everybody, get them all out of my way,
Starting point is 00:13:41 any of those types of things. It's like, what are the different personalities that you want for possibly different parts of your life? Then you make a list of all of these qualities that you want your alter ego to have. Then what you must do is you must name it. You've got to come up with a different name. When you look at like David Goggins, David Goggins has what he calls Goggins. And you know, that right there is a pretty good idea of, you know, he just went from David Goggins to Goggins has what he calls Goggins. And that right there is a pretty good idea of, he just went from David Goggins to Goggins. And Goggins, he says, is the guy that will run through anybody and will not lose. And so when you look at this guy running 205 miles and doing all of these crazy, ridiculous things, the things that to us humans that don't do these types of things
Starting point is 00:14:21 are like, that doesn't even seem like someone could do. Well, David Goggins doesn't feel like he does it. He feels like Goggins, his alter ego is the one that pushes him through it. And so really what it comes down to is you want to develop the skill set, the qualities, all of the stuff that you want, habits, traits, everything that you want that alter ego to have. You want to name that alter ego. And then what would make it easier is to have an actual physical, tangible thing that can help you remember it. Something that you can see and something that you can feel. So it could be like a really cool, amazing ring. It could be a necklace. It could be a set of glasses that you wear that reminds you to step into that. And the reason why this is important is because we're going to dip into our old self multiple times, hundreds of times a day. And sometimes
Starting point is 00:15:09 when you see the ring or you see the watch, you see the necklace, or you see and feel all of these things, or maybe the glasses on your face, it reminds you, oh yeah, hold on, I'm stepping into my alter ego, right? This isn't just for famous people and for athletes. I know an executive coach and she used an alter ego to overcome her fear of public speaking and become a super successful keynote speaker. So she had like who she was and she was an executive coach and she helped COOs and all of these things. And she wanted to become a speaker,
Starting point is 00:15:38 but she was really afraid to get on stage. So she developed this alter ego of when I'm on stage, I am this person and this person thinks this way, acts this way, feels this way. This is the name that I'm going to give this person and was able to start to get past her lack of self-confidence by developing this alter ego. Now, once again, this will not be the easiest thing in the world. Your old self won't die easy. It will continue to come back over and over and over again. And you'll notice yourself slipping into fear
Starting point is 00:16:09 sometimes. You'll notice yourself slipping into limiting beliefs or thoughts that no longer serve you or any of that type of stuff. And what you need to develop is a really clear and keen sense of awareness. You need to have awareness of when you're dipping back into it. And then what you need to do is you need to practice putting on the cape, putting on the mask, stepping into that version of you. When you notice those limiting beliefs or that negative self-talk or whatever it is,
Starting point is 00:16:35 the lack of self-confidence dipping in, you have to practice what it would feel like to step into being to that person. And what it's gonna require is massive, massive amounts of repetition over and over and over again, reminding yourself who you are, what you stand for, who you are, what you stand for. And really what it comes down to all of this in my full on personal belief is there's where you are in this world and there's where you want to be. And I am more concerned, like you need to do a lot of things to go from where you are to where you want to be, but I'm more concerned with who you are. Who you need to become in order to achieve
Starting point is 00:17:11 the life that you want is more important than what you need to do. Because if you become the person that does this, the things that need to happen, the following through, the being ruthless, doing what you say you're going to do, waking up early, whatever it is, when you become the person that you need to become in order to achieve the life that you want, eventually you'll just start to do all the things that you need to do. And what it really comes down to is you need to act as if. If you wake up every single morning and act as if you are the person that has the life that you want with all the habits, traits, qualities, you do all of those things, you will eventually wake up and you will be that person. That won't be something that you have to fake it anymore. You don't have to fake it till you make it. You will eventually have actually made it. You will
Starting point is 00:17:53 become that person. And the qualities of that person will feel natural to you because there has been so much practice and repetition of being that person. And if you become that person, you will absolutely 100%, as long as you don't die along the way, create the life that you truly want. And that is the benefit of developing the alter ego. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love this episode, if you got something from it, if you feel like other people could learn from it as well, do me a favor.
