about how to find and discover and then follow your passion. And we're going to talk about how
to not live a mediocre life and really discover why you are alive and specifically your reason for being alive
your passion your purpose and then how to follow through and make your life
about your passion or your purpose and today I'm gonna share my my full story
of how I got to where I am some things you may have heard before some things
you probably never have heard before but I'm just gonna share how I got to where I am. Some things you may have heard before, some things you probably never have heard before, but I'm just going to share how I discovered what I was
passionate about and then how I went full force and became obsessed with it and where it got me
now fast forwarding almost 10 years later. And today's going to be a little different,
but hopefully when you hear my story, it might give you ideas of how to find your passion,
but also how to actually fully immerse yourself into your
passion. And so today's going to be in two parts. We're going to talk about how to find your passion
in the first part. In the second part, we're going to talk about how to follow your passion
with every single thing that you have. And the reason why this is important, it might be the
most important topic, is because every single person is going to get to the end of their life
and they're going to have a moment, you know, hopefully we all get to the end of our life and we live really long lives
and we're in, you know, a bed surrounded by our family and we get a moment of recollection where
we can think back over our life. And we're either going to get to the point where we look back and
we're like, man, this was everything I wanted. I'm so glad that I did this. Or we're going to
get to end our life and be like, I wish I would have done something different. And at some point in time, most people wake up in their life and they realize
that the path that they're on is not really the path they want to be on. You know, people call
the midlife crisis, but for some people, like for me, it was happened at 23 years old. Uh, and then
it happened again at 27 years old. For some people, it happens at 40. Some people happens at 50,
but at some point in time, most people wake up and they're like, I don't know what I'm
doing.
I don't know why I am where I am.
And they become aware that they have either followed a path that society told them to,
that they felt like they were supposed to, that their parents told them to.
And they have an option at that moment.
They can either make a change and you can make a change and change your life or continue
on doing exactly what you're doing.
And if you're listening to this podcast, you probably have already come to that moment.
And that's why you're here is to learn yourself more, to grow yourself more so you can create
the life that you want.
And you have the option.
Either you can make a change or you can continue doing what you're doing.
Most people though, and I'm going to be honest with you, I've spoken with tens of thousands
of people over the past 19 years of being in self-development. Most people though, and I'm going to be honest with you, I've spoken with tens of thousands of people over the past 19 years of being in self-development.
Most people do nothing.
They don't make a change.
And then that brings a natural question like why?
Why don't they make a change?
And the reason why is because it's easier not to do something.
It's easier to do nothing than it's to do something.
And people always take the path of least resistance unless they consciously push themselves towards the path of more resistance. They'll always go for least
resistance unless they realize that the pain that they're trying to avoid now will be a million
times more painful later on in their life. So it's a lot less painful later on in life if they do what
they need to do and they push past that resistance.
They won't make a change unless they realize how painful it will be late in life,
if they don't make a change. When they're on their deathbed, when they're older, when they realize,
man, I should have done something different. I wasted 40 years of my life, 60 years of my life.
And so hopefully for you, you understand that the pain of not following your passion, not
finding your passion, not following your passion, fast forward 20, 30, 40, 60 years for some
of you, not following that passion eventually will end up being way more painful than it
is to go, I'm going to make a change.
It's a little uncomfortable to make a change, but it's way more painful later on in life
to not make that change.
So let's talk about how to find your passion.
First off, you've heard me say this quote. but it's way more painful later on in life to not make that change. So let's talk about how to find your passion first off.
You've heard me say this quote,
it's one of my quotes that I see shared online all the time,
is right now it's okay not to know your passion,
but it's not okay to not wake up every single day
and be in search of what your passion is.
If you don't know what your passion about it,
if you don't know what your purpose is,
then wake up every single day
and ask yourself the question,
and journal it every single day
until it comes to you and you figure out what it is. And so let's talk about a couple different
ways that you can find what you're passionate about. One of my favorite ways, I wrote about it
in my book called Level Up, and it is called Ikigai, which is Japanese for your reason for being,
like your reason for being alive. And it's four questions that you want to journal.
your reason for being alive. And it's four questions that you want to journal.
Question number one is what are you good at? Question number two is what do you love?
Question number three is what does the world need? And question number four is what can you be paid for? Right? So what are you good at? What do you love? What does the world need? And then what can
you be paid for? Those are the four questions. If you can find an interlap, like an interlap,
overlap of those four things, usually that's something that is hardcore your passion and
maybe even your purpose for being alive. Another question that I always add to that, which I also
wrote about in my book, is what are you interested in? Because there's things that you could be
interested in, but you might not necessarily be good at yet, but you're so interested in it that
you could become good at it. And so like, what are you interested in? What do you want to learn more about? Like, what is just really intriguing to
you? Like, like for me, I just love figuring humans out. I love looking at a human and talking
to a human and figuring out how they became what they are. Like, I love, what was your mom like?
What was your dad like? And how did, what was your relationship with your, your brother and sister
like? And seeing, oh my God, now it makes sense how you are the person that you are.
For some people, that's not interesting.
For me, that's super interesting, which makes sense why I've gone down this path.
So that's one way to do it is to sit down and journal those questions.
What are you good at?
What do you love?
What does the world need?
And what can you be paid for?
Another thing that I would do, and you know, if you don't know what your passion is, you're
just going to have to do a lot of new things until you discover something that you really are interested in or something
that you love.
Do new things.
Break all of the routines that you have.
Do everything different.
Eat at different places.
Take a new way to work.
Take a new way back from work.
Stop having lunch with the same people at work.
Go and meet new people.
Go to networking events that have nothing to do with anything that you're interested
in.
You know, travel to places in your city that you've never been. Go to, like I said, random
networking events. Travel to places in different cities around your country. Travel to different
countries. Just start to do new things. Because if you don't know what your passion is, if you
keep doing the same shit that you've been doing your whole life, you'll never discover it.
So you've got to put yourself out of your comfort zone and start doing something a little bit different. And I want to say a couple of things
that are really important that I say to people a lot is your passion doesn't have to be your
paycheck. If you can, if your passion can be your paycheck, oh my God, talk about a home run. Like
that's, I feel so lucky that my passion is my paycheck, but I also know a lot of people who
are very passionate about something and it's not their paycheck. And so your passion does not have to be your paycheck.
It can be. So that's something that's very important to know. And what I would say is if
your passion is not a paycheck, like maybe you just, maybe you just really love working with
clay and, and getting on a wheel and throwing the clay and, and creating cups or a vase or something like that.
Sure, you could sell it and you could probably make great money doing it. Or maybe you're just
doing it because you want it. You think it's fun. Maybe you make a few hundred bucks or a few
thousand bucks by selling it online, but it's not going to pay your bills necessarily. Well,
then can you have a job that does pay your bills that you do enjoy at least a little bit,
but it gives you a lot of free time to do the thing that you're passionate about, to do the thing that you love, that brings you joy. Can you have a job that
pays your bills? Because we all have to pay our bills. We all have to exist and eat and keep our
families alive, but also can spend more time doing the things that you actually truly are passionate
about. So your passion doesn't have to be your paycheck. The other thing I'll say about it is
this, and I hear this reflection from a lot of people and this, this really helps them. Like when I do an event, they come up to me and
they say this and it really helps them a lot is, uh, you could either be a jackhammer or you could
be a hummingbird when it comes to your passion. A jackhammer is like me. Like I know that this
thing that I'm doing right now is the thing that I'm most passionate about in the world and helping
people and coaching people and all this. I'm like a jackhammer. Like there's a pretty good chance I'm going to be doing this to the day I
die. It's not about money for me. It's not about fame for me. None of this. I did this podcast for
five years and made $0 off of it for the first five years. I just did it because I was passionate
about it. Maybe I decided to do something else later in life. Maybe I don't, I don't know.
So that's like a jackhammer. Most people though, a lot of times are like hummingbirds. If you watch
a hummingbird, it will go from one flower to the next flower to the next flower. And some people,
that's what your passion is. Like you're really passionate about this thing for the next three
years. And then you're like, okay, I feel like I got my fill. Then you go to the next thing for
the next two or three years and you do that thing. It takes a lot of the pressure off because you
don't have to think, well, if I discover my passion, I have to do this to the day I die.
It could be like, hey, what is my passion? What's something I'm really interested in that I could become passionate about that I love for the next three years? Take the pressure
off yourself. And so you try to do new things. You try to go through the ikigai. You try to wake
yourself up every single morning, be around new people, do new things, journal the question,
and see if you can start to discover what your passion is. Now, once you have found your passion, you need to become obsessed with it. And I'll give you my
story. And I said this a few episodes ago, and I was like, damn, I've never really shared this
before. I should do an actual dedicated episode talking about this so that people can learn a
little bit more. It was actually not in my notes or anything. It just kind of flowed out of me.
And I was like, I need to talk about this more. So I moved in 2012. I quit the job that I was at because I didn't want to work there anymore.
And I lived in Tampa at the time and I backpacked Europe for three months by myself. And I became
very aware of, I need to figure out how to make money without working for someone else,
whether that be online, whether that's my own job, whatever it is, because I love traveling and I
can't go the rest of my life without traveling a lot. So I was like, I need to figure that out.
And that was the first thing that came to me in 2012 when I was traveling. And then the other
thing was, I really wanted to be a musician. Like I thought that that was my life path. I
want to become a musician. I was obsessed with music, still am. And so I was like, I'm going to
move to a place where it is everywhere so that I can't run from it. Cause in Tampa, still am. And so I was like, I'm going to move to a place where it is everywhere so that
I can't run from it. Cause in Tampa, there wasn't really a music scene. So I was like, it's either
Austin or Nashville. Nashville was too cold and a little too country. And I wasn't wanting to make
any country music. So I was like, I'm going to go to Austin. I knew one person in Austin. I was like,
I've heard it's great. And this is before it all blew up. And so I was out here for a few years
and I was in a band and started a band with my, I got in and started doing vocal coaching with a
vocal coach, started a band with my vocal coach. We had that for a year and a half or so. And then
one day I was just sitting with my girlfriend at the time, my wife now, and I was like, I'm going
to start a podcast. Cause I thought I had, I was learning and I was reading and I was growing.
And at that point in time, I had been obsessed with personal development for basically nine
years. And I had so much in my brain that I was like, I feel
obligated to teach it to people. And it wasn't like I was trying to make money off it or become
my job or any of that. It was just like, I feel like I want to do it. And so I'm just going to
try it out and see how it works. I had all the equipment for my recording. I had my microphone,
I had my audio interface, I had everything I needed. Computer, recording equipment, all of that stuff.
So I was like, I'm just going to start a podcast.
Started the podcast and it felt right.
And I remember I had no real idea what I was doing,
but I started getting messages and emails from people saying like,
oh my gosh, this is changing my life.
And those reflections back to me made me feel like,
oh, I'm doing something good in the world,
which made me more passionate about doing the podcast. And I had no idea what I was doing,
but I was like, I need to figure out a way to grow this podcast and to grow a business online
so that I can work for myself. Because at that point in time, I was working for someone else
still. And so I Googled networking events for online businesses in Austin. And I found one
that was called Internet Marketing Party here in Austin, still runs all of that Austin. And I found one that was called Internet Marketing Party here in
Austin. Still runs all of that stuff. And I went and there was a guy, his name was Ryan, and he
was speaking on stage. He was the same age as me. And the first time he ever made a million dollars
a year, he was 24 years old. And I was like, what? That's possible? Like, all I wanted to do is be
able to pay my bills. I wanted to make like
50, 60 grand a year so that I could pay my bills and I could just travel. And I was like, hold on,
this guy made a million dollars in a year at like 24 years old. This is insane. And then I went,
I met another guy and I talked about him in the last episode, but he was making like $300,000
a month and he was super shy and he was running Facebook ads for people. And so I was like,
I went to this event to kind of learn a little bit more and my world expanded, my brain expanded, what was
possible expanded. And I was like, oh my God, this is amazing. And this is a big part about being
passionate about is like, get obsessed with it and your brain will expand and what becomes possible
for you expands as well. So I would meet people at these events and I hate networking events,
just to give you an idea, but I would get their numbers and I would text them and be like, Hey, do you
want to go get some coffee?
And I would go get coffee and I would meet new people and they would say, Hey, you need
to meet this person.
Then they would connect me with this person.
I go get coffee with that person and they would connect me with people.
Oh, you have a podcast.
This guy has a podcast.
You guys should meet up.
And we would talk about podcasts and growing it.
I would meet new people and And I started learning more.
And then we started co-working with each other because it's lonely to work by yourself as
an entrepreneur online.
And so we would co-work and we would go to a friend's house and it would be four or five
of us working and talking.
And what are you building?
And what are you doing?
And what are you building?
And what are you doing?
And we'd give each other ideas.
And then the owner, about two or three months into me doing this, the owner of the same
networking event
that I was a part of, um, in called the internet marketing party had a weekend mastermind for like
20 people. And it was $3,000. I didn't really have that much money at the time, but I was like,
I need to meet new people. I need to meet people who are willing to pay $3,000 to go to it. And
now I'm about to tell you about different ways that I've invested money into myself to learn and
grow. You don't have to go this route. You might be sitting there thinking,
I don't have any money. But I have found that when you invest money into rooms where other people
have invested their money, you start to meet really good people. And so what happened was I
went to this event. It was two days long. Then I met awesome people and became friends with them.
And from that event, I started getting
mentors, people who were already doing, you know, had been making money online for 15, 20 years and
making a million dollars a year. And I got some mentors from there. And I went to, I started going
to every event that I could. And as my business grew, I continued to keep investing all of my
money back into my business. I didn't buy new shit shit I didn't change my life none of that and so what happened was I started investing all my
money back into my business and I hired a social media consultant and I found
him and he he connected me and we started teaching me and how to make
videos online and how to grow my following and then I grew my following
from like zero people on Facebook because Facebook was a big thing back
then to you know over 2.5 million followers on Facebook. And he connected me with other people who were growing
and making videos online. He connected me with Prince EA. He connected me with Jay Shetty. I
became friends with both of them. And the three of us, we would learn and we grew from each other
and we brainstormed and we would help each other grow. When I would post a video, they would share
my videos. When they would post a video, would share my videos when they would post a video
I would share their videos and we all started growing at a really fast event a really fast
Tick I guess you could say we're just growing very fast altogether and in 2018
I went to an event that was by clickfunnels
It was in Orlando, Florida, and I mentioned this in the last time I spoke about this
But I met I had lunch with the same guy again from internet marketing party his name is David Gonzalez he's awesome and he was
with a guy named David and we connected we started talking because he had a watch on and I had a
watch on I love watches so we started connecting and talking around watches I was like what do you
do and he told me what he did and I was like oh my god that's basically the same thing I do but
you're ahead of me and he had a mastermind and we became friends and we talked and about three or four
months later, I joined his mastermind. I spent $25,000 of my saved money that I had for basically
a nest egg, paid him $25,000 to join his mastermind. So I was on calls with him and his
team and everything every single week. I would go to his events. And the reason why I went to
his mastermind, because I wanted to do something similar to him. And I wanted to see exactly how
it was done and learn from him. And I said, Hey, I need you to become my mentor in this. I'll invest
a 25,000, but if I send you a question about X, Y, Z, you just have to help me out. And so he became
a friend and a mentor of mine. And that was one of the biggest steps to growing my business. And my
business grew a lot. And I hit my first million dollar year when I was in his mastermind. And then
I invested a hundred thousand dollars into a year long mastermind. And I met somebody at breakfast
of that mastermind that completely changed my business, like completely. And I met three other
people that were in my
industry and we would do Zoom calls once a month and share secrets. So every one of these people,
myself included, invested $100,000 into a year-long mastermind. And the four of us would
get on calls every single month and share secrets. And I went from a million dollars a year to two
million dollars a year to five million dollars a year the next year. And what happened was I had this realization that when I figured out the thing I wanted to do,
I invested in myself, but more than anything else, I just became obsessed.
And I said, this is the thing I want to do. This is how I'm going to impact the world. This is
what's going to make me feel like I have purpose. And so this is kind of the steps that I've broken
down of how to
follow your passion. The first thing, and that's just my story. I don't say any of that stuff to
brag. I just say it so you have an idea of kind of the journey I had to go on over the past
nine, 10 years at this point to get to where I am now. Because people look and they're like,
oh, I want a podcast that's as big as yours. How do you do? And it's like, it was a decade of work
to get me here. And if you're willing to invest a
decade, your life will completely change for whatever you're willing to invest in. So the
first thing that I hope that you get from this, and my first tip for following your passion,
is you have to become obsessed. You have to do everything that you possibly can to learn more
about it. You have to Google it. You have to YouTube it. You have to research it. You have
to see if there's any networking groups that are in your area that have to do with it. You have to Google it. You have to YouTube it. You have to research it. You have to see if there's any networking groups
that are in your area that have to do with it.
You have to see if there's any events in your country
that's in that industry.
And you might have to invest money into yourself,
but I promise you that the biggest ROI
that you'll ever have, biggest return on investment,
is investing that money into yourself.
It will always come back, tenfold.
So become obsessed.
Do everything that you possibly can. Like for me, even, even to the point, like when I think about,
like, I've been wanting to scuba dive more. And so what I do is, is I make it hard to forget
is what I do. So a couple of months ago, I was like, man, I need to go scuba diving more. Like,
I really love scuba diving. I'm certified, but I don't go enough. I need to get some,
I need my friends and I need to go on some trips. I was like, how do I not forget? And so I was like, let me go to scuba, see if there's any
scuba diving magazines. So I searched it. There is a scuba diving magazine. And I was like,
you know what I'm gonna do? I'm going to subscribe to this so that every single month I'm reminded,
and I'm going to put this in my coffee table so that I'm going to see it over and over and over
and over again. So what I'm trying to do is take these things that I want to, that I'm passionate
about things that I love and make the, they make them omnipresent so that I can't forget about them. It's not like,
oh, six months ago I had this thought and I completely forgot about it. It's like, no,
I'm always thinking of this thing. So that's the first thing is just become obsessed.
The second thing is to find other people that are doing what you want to do. Are there any
mentors that you can hire? Are there any people that are doing the same thing as you that you become friends with?
Are there any Facebook groups that you can join about that?
Are there any Reddit threads that you can be a part of to learn from?
What can you do?
That's what I would say is figure out how you can just find other people doing the same
thing because every time I met a new person, my world expanded and my mindset expanded. And I went, if they can do it,
I can do it. I've just got to learn what they have in their head and start doing the same thing.
It's the exact same thing for you. You can definitely do it. Number three, don't be afraid
to invest in yourself, whatever that looks like for you, whether it's hiring a mentor, hiring a coach,
hiring a friend to help you do something, going to events, traveling to different places.
Don't be afraid to invest in yourself. If you need a mentor, hire a mentor. The point of a
mentor or a coach is to collapse time for you. So what took them five years to learn or 10 years to
learn, they could teach you in six months. And so they basically condense time for you and they make your learning curve way shorter.
And then the fourth thing that I'll recommend for following your passion is to have fun while
you're doing it. You know, the point is this is the, you want to find the thing that you love,
that you're obsessed with. It doesn't feel like this is something that is work. It feels like fun. Become obsessed with it. Don't run from it. Like this is your passion. You should love it.
You should follow it. Find other people that are doing it. Befriend them. Start meeting with other
people in the industry. You know, birds of a feather flock together. If they do the same thing
that you want to do and they're in the same industry, I guarantee they know other people
who are doing the same thing. And then what I would
say is, is what the reason why I say become obsessed with it and follow it with like every
ounce of energy that you have is don't let it fall away or quietly sit in the back of your mind.
When you discover what your passion is and you don't follow it, it will destroy you.
If you find the thing that you're most passionate about and you don't do it, it will eventually
destroy you. And so you've got to find that thing.
You've got to go on a constant search of trying to find it.
When you find it, put every ounce of energy into following that thing.
And that is how you don't live a mediocre life.
That's how you find and follow your passion.
And that's what I got for you on today's episode.

R-O-B-D-I-A-L-J-R. And if you're out there, you probably have heard me
announce this in the past few episodes. I am about to launch something that is called Mindset
Mentor Plus, and it is a way to fully integrate every single one of these episodes into your life.
And so therefore, you're not just listening to the episodes passively, but you're actively
integrating them into your life in many ways. Each and every episode of the podcast is going to come with
detailed worksheets, multiple pages. It's going to come with journaling prompts to help you really
take the podcast episode, work through it in your mind, put it into your life. It's going to come
