Today, we're going to talk about how to create the life that you want through the way that you
set your intentions in your life. And this is a great, great topic to dive into
because I don't think people really talk about it enough. And there was a really great question
that was asked to me in a course that I run called Rewire Your Brain. And somebody asked a question
and when I answered it, I was like, this is a great topic that I need to talk about. Also,
in a podcast episode. So I want you to imagine this first. Before we dive into the actual
meat and taters here, I'm going to give you a story. I want you to imagine it in your mind,
and I want you to imagine what you would think if you were in this situation, okay?
Imagine waking up really early, right at the sunrise, the sun's starting to come up,
and you're hopping on a boat. Let's say you're in Miami, Florida. And in Miami, what you can do is
you can actually hop on a boat in Miami, and in a few hours, you can be in the Bahamas. And in Miami, what you can do is you can actually hop on a boat in Miami. And in a
few hours you can be in the Bahamas. And let's say you, you hop on the boat in Miami and you see
everything getting ready. You see the people on the ship, putting everything together. And you
walk up to the captain, you say, Hey captain, you know, where exactly are we going to be going?
And the captain looks straight, straight towards the front of the boat and says, we're going to go
that direction. And you're like, cool. going to go that direction. And you're like,
cool, where exactly in that direction? And he's like, well, you know, starts moving his hand back and forth. He's like, it's a little bit, a little bit that direction, but it also could be that
direction. And you're like, well, which one are we going on? He's like, you know, puts both of
his hands out and he says somewhere this way. And he doesn't really seem to know where he's going. He just seems to be wanting to drift into a certain direction.
Would you feel 100% confident being on the boat with that salesman or that salesman,
that sailor or that captain if that's what he was going into your journey across the water
to the Bahamas?
Would you feel safe in that situation with him?
Or would you be like, oh, this guy seems kind of crazy. I don't you feel safe in that situation with him? Or would you be
like, oh, this guy seems kind of crazy. I don't know if I want to stay with him. You probably
wouldn't want to stay on the boat. You'd be like, man, we're going to end up in the Bermuda triangle.
We're just going to disappear. No one's going to ever be able to find us.
Now, think about that for a second. When you wake up every single morning,
do you actually have intentions of exactly what you're
going to be doing, where you're going to go and what you're going to create in life? Or do you
just kind of go with the flow? Do you just kind of go, I'm going to go in that direction and
hopefully something that I like happens, right? Are you just going with the flow or are you maybe
just like putting out fires all day long
or are you just reacting to things? You wake up 15 minutes before you're supposed to be at work,
you take a quick shower, you get dressed, you make some coffee, you're off on the road and you,
you know, pick up food on the way. Is that how you live your life? Because if you're not waking
up and setting your intention of what you want in your life, who you want to be and what you want to get out of life every single day,
you're not going to get what you want in life.
You know, are you waking up and saying, this is what I want.
This is how I will get it.
This is who I will be.
And this is how I will show up today.
The same way that if you were to get onto a boat and walk up
to a real captain and say, Hey, which way are we direct? Which way are we going? They're going to
say, well, here's, you know, you can see the GPS right here. This, our current coordinates,
these are coordinates of the exact place that we're going to. And it's going to take us,
you know, about three hours and 47 minutes. You'd go perfect. That's the guy that I want to be on
the boat with. Why are you not living your life like
that though? Isn't your life a little bit more important than just a boat ride from, you know,
Miami over to the Bahamas? Do you wake up every single day and say, you know, this is exactly
what I want. If you want to make more money, are you setting the intention every single morning
that today I'm going to make more money today? I'm going to take a step forward into making money
and to making more money in my life. If you want to be happier, are you setting the intention
every single day of I'm going to bring out all of the happiness that I possibly can to everyone
around me and receive as much happiness as I possibly can? Are you setting that intention?
If you want to be more peaceful, are you setting the intention of, okay, today I'm going to be more calm.
I'm going to be more peaceful.
I'm going to take deeper breaths.
I'm going to try to bring more peace into my life because there's been too much stress.
There's been too much anxiety.
There's been too much worry.
I want to bring in more peace.
If you want deeper connections with others, are you setting the intention of today?
I'm going to make the deepest connection I can with at least one person.
And then you do that every single day.
Because here's the thing.
Many people are living their lives with absolutely no direction.
They're just going, I'm just going to see what happens today.
And if you just see what happens, you're not going to get what you want in life.
You know, it's like going to a buffet and just closing your eyes and just picking stuff
up and putting it on the plate.
There's going to be stuff where you're like, oh, this is okay, but I didn't want this.
This is gross.
Oh, I'm allergic to this, right?
You have to literally have direction.
So some people have literally no direction where they just wake up and they just react
and things just happen and they just see how to deal with it.
And how could you ever expect that to get you to where you want to be?
It's like if you were in a sailboat, you put up the sails and then you're the only person
on the sailboat and you're like, well, let's just see where I land, right?
Are you living your life of just, hey, let's see where I land today.
Let's see where I land in 10 years.
I'll just hope,
hopefully it won't suck. Like a lot of people are living their lives with absolutely no direction.
Think about that for a second. You're the only person that can hop onto the actual wheel of the sailboat and steer it to where you want it to go. But you're just going, oh, let's just see where
the wind takes us. That's not safe. That's not what you want. And you're not going to end up where you want to be. So a lot of people live with
no direction. And then also a lot of people live with little direction. And that's the other thing
where if you're getting into the boat with this sailor and he says, okay, we're going in this
direction. This is where Bimini is. And he happens to be two degrees off and you go for a few hours.
If you're just two degrees off, you're going to end up miles away from where you want to be two degrees off and you go for a few hours, if you're just two degrees off,
you're going to end up miles away from where you want to be. Think about that for a second.
If you have just a little bit of intention of, hey, I'd like to make a little bit more money
this year. Hey, it would be nice to lose some weight. It would be nice to kind of be happier.
You know, it would be nice to have a little bit more peace. I would, I would kind of
like to worry less. That would be kind of nice. You know, I would like to try to make some new
friends in the next, I don't know, couple of years before I die. Like, do you have little
direction? Because if you're just two degrees off in a few hours, you're going to be miles away.
Imagine if you're living with little direction for years. One day you're going to be miles away. Imagine if you're living with little direction for years.
One day you're going to wake up and go, oh my God, where am I? I don't want to be here. This
isn't the life that I wanted. I didn't want to get that degree. I didn't want to live in this city.
I didn't even want to marry this person. Oh crap. I didn't even realize that. I didn't want to have
kids this early. And you start realizing, oh my gosh, because of the fact that I didn't set my
intention of exactly what I want in my life, I'm looking around and realizing that what I have in
my life isn't exactly what I want. Like that happens for a lot of people. It's called a midlife
crisis. And I'm not saying everybody just marries the wrong person and has kids on accident or
anything like that. I'm just saying people kind of just go with the flow sometimes instead of being
hardcore intentional on exactly
what it is that they want.
You know, so how are you living your life?
Are you living your life with no direction?
Are you living your life with just a little bit of direction?
Or are you living your life with hardcore direction, with intention every single day?
How are you living your life?
You know, we used to always say that you have to set your intentions,
set your goals, and you have to look at it every single day, multiple times a day to know exactly
where you're going so that you make sure that you stay on the right path. Because sometimes you're
going to fall off the path. Things are going to happen. There's going to have to be detours,
but it doesn't mean that you change your goals. It means that you just go, okay,
we got to go detour and we're going to still go to where we need to go. You know, I always used to say that, imagine that you
and the number one archer in the entire world are lining up and you guys are the exact same,
you're using the exact same bow and arrow. You're the exact same distance away and you're going to
go at two different targets right next to each other and you aim and fire and then they
aim, fire, shoot their bow, who's going to have a better chance of hitting the target? It's going
to be the number one archer in the world, right? Of course, that just makes sense. They're the
number one archer in the world. But if you blindfold that person and spin them around so
that they can't see where the target is and they have no idea what direction
the target is and then they shoot, who has a better chance of hitting it? You. Why? It's not
because you're better. It's not because you've been practicing for longer. Simply because you
can see the target and they can't. With our ever-changing routines, there's never been a
better time to learn something new.
And my recommendation for learning something new is an app called Blinkist.
Blinkist is unique and powerful, and it works on your phone, your tablet, and your web browser.
And Blinkist gives you the best key takeaways and the need-to-know information
from over 3,000 nonfiction bestsellers in over 27 categories.
And Blinkist condenses them down into blinks, which you can
read or you can listen to in just 15 minutes. And I like Blinkist because it's short, it's quick,
and it's to the point exactly like me. And right now, Blinkist has a very special offer for our
audience. If you go to Blinkist.com slash mindset, you can start your seven day free trial and get
25% off Blinkist premium membership and up to 65% off audiobooks,
which you get to keep forever. So that's Blinkist, spelled B-L-I-N-K-I-S-T.com
slash mindset to get 25% off your premium membership and a seven-day free trial,
Blinkist.com slash mindset. It's that simple. So number one, do you know what your target is in life? Like,
are you extremely, extremely clear on exactly what your target is in life?
Because some people kind of have an idea of what their target is, but they're not really clear.
Like a lot of people say, Hey, I'd like to lose weight this year. But if you lose one pound,
you've, you've hit your goal. You've lost weight. Some people say, I want to make more money this
year. Well, if you make $1 more this year than you did last year, then you've hit your goal. You've lost weight. Some people say, I want to make more money this year. Well, if you make $1 more this year than you did last year, then you've hit your
goal because you made more money. But I'm assuming if you want to make more money, you want to make
more than an extra dollar. I'm assuming that if you want to lose weight, you want to lose more
than a pound. So you have to be extremely intentional and say, this is exactly the amount
of money that I want to make this year. This is how I'm going to get it. This is exactly the weight that I want to weigh. This is exactly
the person who has the body that I want. This is the exact body fat percentage that I want to be
at. This is the exact muscle mass I want to be at because the more clear and detailed I get of my
goals, the easier it is for me to hit because now I have a target that what? That I can see. So are you living your life with intention or without intention? So many of your people are
frustrated. They don't have the life that they want, but they're not even sure a hundred percent
of what they want. Like if you don't know what you want, how could you be pissed off if you don't
have what you want? It's like your mom calls you up and she says, Hey sweetie, I'm going to get
you a Christmas gift. What do you want for Christmas? And you're like, mom, you know,
whatever, whatever you want. Like, just give me something. Give me something fun. Give me something
awesome. And your mom's like, okay, I'll get you something. You know, are you sure you don't want
tell me exactly what you want? No, no, no, mom. I trust you. Go ahead and get something.
And then Christmas comes and you unwrap your mom's gift. And you're like, what the hell is this mom?
I didn't want socks. And you're like, well, she's like, well, honey, you didn't tell me what you wanted. So I just
got it what I thought you wanted. You're like, yeah, but I didn't want socks. Like you can't
be mad at your mom in that situation when she called you and asked you what you wanted for
Christmas and you didn't tell what you wanted for Christmas. And then you can't get mad at her for
not getting what you want, what you wanted to get, but you never actually even told her what
it was. You're living your life the same way. God, the universe, whatever it is, you're not asking
for what you want. You're not clear on exactly what you want. So you're getting socks. That's
what you're getting. You have to wake up and you have to be extremely intentional, extremely
intentional because you're never going to get what you want if you're not clear on exactly what it is that
you want. So what do you do? Let's talk about how to go ahead and number one, get clear on what it
is that you want. Number two, actually get what it is that you want. So first off is you got to
get extremely clear on what it is that you want. Like get extremely clear on what it is because
if you can see the target like the archer, when you can see the target, you have a much better
chance of hitting that target. Okay. So get very clear on what it is that you if you can see the target, like the archer, when you can see the target, you have a much better chance of hitting that target. Okay. So get very clear on what is it you want. That's
the, that's the first thing. Next, here's what you got to do. You got to figure out where you
want to be in five years. It's like going, okay. You know, and this might stress a few people out
going, oh my God, five years is so far away. It is. But then, you know, if you think about how
five years ago from today, it's not that far. You're like, oh man, that was actually pretty quick. Right? So it seems far,
which it is, but also it isn't at the same time once you go ahead and live your life.
So you've got to figure out a couple, you know, five years from now, figure out a few goals that
really excite you, where you want to be, how much money you want to be making, all of that stuff.
Get clear on where you want to be. It's like going, okay, you know, if we're going to take a voyage from, you know, Miami and we're going to go all the way to
Australia, that's a really freaking long voyage, right? Like we need to know where we are and where
we're going for sure. What's more important than that though, what we're doing more in the short
term than in the longterm, because we know where we are and where we're going. Now we need to get
clear on the next few days, right? So first thing, you got to make some five
year goals. You got to figure out where you want to be. You've got to set your long-term vision on
where it is that you want to be. Make those goals bite-sized is what you got to do next.
So now you take that five year goal, chop it up. Number two, what you do is you make some one year
goals that are checkpoints to your five year goal. So if you say, okay, in five years, I want to be making a million dollars a year.
How much am I making right now?
Let's say making $60,000 a year.
Okay, if I want to be making a million dollars a year, five years from now,
this year, I 100% have to hit the $100,000 mark.
Okay, what do I need to do to hit that $100,000 mark?
And now you can start making some plans.
Okay, now that you've got your goals
for the year, you chop that up even smaller to quarterly goals. Okay. If I want to make $100,000
in a year and I split that into four, I need to make $25,000 a quarter. Okay. Now I need to figure
out how to get to $25,000 this quarter. Okay. Great. Now what we do is we take those quarterly
goals and we chop them into monthly goals. Okay. Now that I know I need to make $25,000 a quarter. Now what I can do is I can
go ahead and chop it into monthly. So if you divide that by three, what is that? That's like
$8,300 a month. I think 83 33, I think is a number somewhere around there, right? 83 33 is how much
you need to make this month. Perfect. Okay, cool. And once again, this could be used for money. This could be used for anything, but it's just easy to chop these up and show you
money exactly how to do this. Okay. Now that we figured out our monthly goals,
let's make some weekly goals. Okay. My goal is if I need to make 83, 33 this month,
that means I need to make about a little bit over $2,000 a week. Okay. Let's make some goals on how
to get to $2,000 a week. And we start figuring all of
these numbers out. Okay. What do I need to do this week? And then what you do, here's the secret,
is you have to set a date with yourself on Sunday. Every Sunday, you look back on how this past week
went and you look forward on what next week has. And so you look at what went well and what didn't
go well last week. And you set 10 to 15 minutes with yourself. That's it.
Maybe 30 if you have a lot going on.
If you have a whole lot to plan, kids and family and events and all of those things.
Maybe it's 30 minutes.
You have a date with yourself on Sunday and you figure out what it is that you want.
And then what you do every single morning, the last part of it is you have to take it
even more bite-sized and to make your goals into daily.
Daily check-ins with yourself. Same way that if you're getting into a boat with the captain, you're going to want to know that today he knows where he's going, right?
You want to make sure today he knows the exact coordinates of where we're going. It doesn't
matter if we're going from Miami to Australia. I need to know that today we're going to go from
Miami to the Bahamas because then we're going to start off and go off on the Atlantic and et cetera, whatever. But you want to know what we're
doing today. And so what you do is you have a morning check-in with yourself, five, maybe 10
minutes where you set your intention of exactly what it is that you need to do, exactly what it
is that you need to get out and how you need to show up. And once again, this could be used for
financial goals. This could be used for any other type of goals that you want. This could also be goals of who you want to be showing up into your life.
What intentions you have. Like I said, it doesn't just have to be money. It could be,
I want to be happier today. I want to be completely off my anxiety medicine in five years.
Okay. In order to do that, how do I take steps back? And you go backwards from there and you
say, okay, who do I need to show up as? Who do I need to do? What do I need to do? How do I
need to show up? But you could do this every single day. I want to be happier today. Okay.
What do I need to do today to be more happier? What would make today more happy? And what I do
is you write everything down. I had a friend who was, well, he's still alive. He's not was, he is,
but he was the number 30 employee at Facebook.
He got fired from Facebook before they went public and he lost out on approximately $200
million. And he started to go into a depression after this. And he came up with this phrase and
he said, I will not allow my depression or my happiness to be left up to chance.
What does that mean? If I'm depressed, it's because
of everything that I'm doing each day. If I'm happy, it's because of everything that I'm doing
each day. And so I'm going to pull myself out of this depression and say, I'm going to do
everything that I possibly can to be happier today. And so he made a massive list of everything he
loves that makes him happy. Like this massive list of hundreds of things. And every morning
he looks at it and he says, what can I do today?
And so what he's doing is he's intentionally, intention is a key word,
intentionally placing happiness into his day to make him happier.
Isn't it funny how that works out?
Works out perfect.
So you've got to take that and say, okay, I want to be happier today.
I want to be more peaceful. If I want to be more peaceful, I'm going to set every hour on the hour on my phone for today
that it's going to go off and it's going to remind me to do six deep breaths. Inhale through the nose.
Exhale through the mouth. And I'm going to do that every single hour to make myself feel more
peaceful. I'm going to set my intentions every single day of how I need to be, who I need to be,
how I need to show up and how that's going to get
me to the path that I need to get on in order to create the life that I want. So you have to realize
if you're going to be doing this, there's no more not living your life with intention.
There's no more just seeing what happens. There's no more just going with the flow. There's no more
just putting out fires, being reactive to everything. No, this is about being intentional and not being reactive, but being proactive in every single
thing that you do in your life. What do you want? Who do you want to be? How do you want to show up?
And what do I need to do today to show up as that person that is the person I want to be,
that creates the life that I want, and that creates the life that I want and that creates the dream life that
I know I can have. I'm just not doing it at this point. And that's it. You take your five-year
goals, make them one-year goals. You take your one-year goals, make them quarterly goals. You
take your quarterly goals, make them monthly. You take your monthly, make them weekly. And you look
at your weekly and make them daily. And then you say, how do I need to show up today? And that's
it. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you
