Today we're going to be talking about the question, does money buy happiness? I was on a podcast episode about two weeks ago,
and he asked me the question, does money buy happiness? And I would say that before,
you know, I've been on a long journey of money and making money and my psychology around money,
which for those of you guys that are sitting out there, we all have a psychology around money.
Most people don't make the money that they want to make simply because of their own psychology around money.
Maybe the way that their parents talked about money when they were a kid, maybe the way that
your parents fought about money in front of you as you were a child. Maybe you had a grandparent
that said, you know, money's the root of all evil. And so you realize that it was evil. And
what you've been doing possibly is pushing money away from you because of the fact that
you feel like it's evil. There's, there's so many different constraints that we have around money
and our psychology and our mindset around money. And I would say that mine has changed the more
money that I have made. I have been blessed enough, I think, to be able to make a great amount of money in a short period of time
and to be able to do what I do. I don't know if I could be more blessed. I feel like everything is
so amazing and it's only getting better. And I keep telling myself it's only going to get better.
The bottom will not fall out because it's incredible. That used to not be my psychology around money.
And the question of does money buy happiness came up. And it's interesting because I think
four years ago, five years ago, before I really started making a good amount of money,
I would have said no. But this time when he asked me that question, something inside of me, something internally said yes. And I was able to justify it. So let me take you down the path that I took him down
as we were talking about. He said, does money buy happiness? And I said, yes, it absolutely
buys happiness. And he's like, wow, really? I've never heard somebody say that before.
And I said, yes, it buys happiness, but it doesn't buy fulfillment.
Think about that for a second.
It buys happiness, but it doesn't buy fulfillment.
And the reason why is because happiness is a fleeting emotion.
Happiness is like the clouds passing by.
They're not there forever and they will never be there forever.
You will never be 100% happy all day, every day.
Does money make you happy? Momentarily? Yeah,
I think that it does. You know, if I have a big sale or we have a big week, like, you know,
we had a huge week this week and it's been incredible and it made me happy that that
money went into my bank account. But there was no part of me that felt like it fulfilled my soul or my life purpose by making that money.
And that's what we're truly searching for. You're not searching for happiness. You're searching for
fulfillment. That's the reason why people hate their jobs. That's the reason why people hate
some of the relationships they're in. That's the reason why they hate, you know, how they spend
their waking hours, the way that they feel about themselves, the way they feel about their body, their mind, their emotions. They can be happy,
but then five minutes later, they could be sad. And what you're searching for is not happiness.
It's fulfillment. Fulfillment is like a rock. When you have it, you have it. And happiness
is a byproduct also of fulfillment. The more fulfilled you are,
the more that you are happy. Now you have to realize this just because you're fulfilled
doesn't mean that you won't get sad. Just because you're filled doesn't mean that you won't get
angry. You won't get mad. You won't feel resentment towards people. Resentment is,
you know, is, is just like, you know, anything else. It is happiness, sad. All of those things
are just clouds that are passing. They're just going on by. So can money buy you happiness?
Well, let me tell you this. If, if I were to go and, you know, one of my favorite, one of my
favorite, uh, one of my favorite, uh, what is it? Uh, quotes around this was, I think it was Daniel
Tosh. And he says, money said, people say money can't buy happiness, but money can buy a jet ski. And have you ever seen anybody on a jet ski,
not having fun? Everyone's always smiling and like, this is fun. This is fun, right? A money
can buy you a jet ski. It can buy you that momentary fleeting bit of happiness. But then
when you get off the boat, you get off the jet ski and you're back on shore and you go back home and you're sitting in your house by yourself, those, those, those, those
thoughts come back into your head of, man, I don't want to be doing what I'm doing. I'm not fulfilled.
I'm, I don't know what my purpose is. And so I think that the path that everybody needs to start
going on is not searching for happiness. It's searching for
fulfillment. And so the question that I have for you is what is it that truly makes you feel
fulfilled? And if you don't know what it is, I've got episodes in the past about how to find your
passion, how to find your purpose. The ancient Japanese technique, Ikigai, I-K-I-G-A-I, that I
did not too long ago. Those help you find your purpose,
help you find your reason why you're here, the reason why you're alive. But I think what's
important that you have to realize is that happiness doesn't just happen. Fulfillment
doesn't just happen. You have to wake up and you have to search for happiness. You have to search for
fulfillment. If you don't know what makes you happy and you don't know what makes you fulfilled,
your number one goal in life is to figure that out. It's okay. What I like to say is that it's
okay not to know what makes you fulfilled. It's okay not to know what makes you happy,
but it's not okay to not be in the pursuit of that thing, of know what makes you happy, but it's not okay to not be in the pursuit
of that thing of finding what makes you happy, of finding what makes you fulfilled,
what finding it makes you feel like your soul's finally coming alive.
So I can talk from somebody who, you know, from experience of making money and being
absolutely unfulfilled. I was, you know, my, my last job that I had, you know, five and a half
years ago, I made a lot of money working very little from home and I could do anything that
I wanted to, but it was the most depressed I've ever felt. I was making a bunch of money. I was
sitting at home. I was only working a couple hours a day. And it was like, I was making,
I was, I felt like I was just wasting breath. I was wasting oxygen.
But then I've also been to the point where I've made good money.
And then also I've been extremely fulfilled.
And I could die right now.
And I feel like I've done everything that I could do.
I feel like I've found what it is that I'm breathing for.
And my hope for you is that you can find that out as well. And if you don't know what it is,
don't get stressed out about it. I see so many people, they come to me, one of the number one
questions, if not number one, number two question I get is, how do I find my passion? How do I find
what I'm passionate about? How do I find my purpose? I don't know what the answer to that is.
I know Ikigai, I-K-I-G-A-I, you can scroll back and list those episodes. Like I said, you can Google, you can find all out about it. It's okay not to know what makes you fulfilled, but it's not okay
not to be in the pursuit of it, to not be pursuing the question of the quest of finding what it is
that you are absolutely obsessed with that makes you come alive. Because now that you know that you don't
know what it is, the worst thing you could do, which most people do, is they get angry,
they get sad, they get frustrated, they don't feel good. They're like, man, I wish that I'm
34 years old. I should now know what my purpose is. I should now know what my passion is. No,
you don't. You shouldn't. Stop shooting all over yourself. You shouldn't know anything at this
point. There are no certain dates that you're supposed to know what you're passionate about, but it's not okay for you to not be on
the quest to find what it is. And so one thing that I want to challenge you on is as you're
getting done listening to this, pause this. Don't go on and listen to another episode.
Don't go on and find out what the next
thing is that you need to keep yourself busy or scroll through Instagram or keep yourself
preoccupied so that you don't have the quiet time and the silence to start to listen to your deep
intuition. Pause me. When you get done with this, turn it off. Turn the radio off. Sit in the parking
lot of Walmart, whatever it is that you need to do, and sit there for five minutes.
And just be quiet.
And ask yourself, what do I truly want to do with my life?
What makes my soul feel alive?
If my soul had a mouth, what would make that freaking soul smile
from soul ear to soul ear?
Because you might not find it out today, but you might find out
tomorrow or the next day or the next day. And if you wake up every single day and ask yourself,
what is my purpose? What makes me truly come alive? You will eventually find out what it is.
I can promise you that. And when you do find out what it is, you wake up every single day
and you set your GPS, just like you're getting in a car and you're setting your GPS to go to your friend's house. It's going to take you
exactly there. You wake up every single day and you say, how can I get deeper into my path of
fulfillment? So does money buy happiness? Hell yeah, it does. It buys some real fun stuff.
But happiness is a fleeting emotion. It is a passing cloud and it will not be there forever,
but fulfillment, that's the sun.
That thing, no matter what happens, it's there.
It's always there.
It'll be there for the rest of your life.
When you find out what it is,
no matter how crazy things get,
you can always go outside and feel the sunshine on your face.
