Get out there and make it your mission to make somebody else's day better, and we'll talk to you soon. Let me share with you the easiest way to create a new habit.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Most people, when they think about habits, they think about all of the stuff they need to implement into their lives. The secret to implementing a new habit and making sure it sticks is to make it as simple and easy as possible. I was reading a book to not too long ago and the author said that he wanted to start flossing his teeth. For 20 years, he's been trying to floss his teeth and he just couldn't create it as a habit. And so one day he decided he's going to make it as simple as possible for him to start that habit. And so he dedicated and said that I will floss one tooth, just one tooth every single day. And that's all that he focused on was just the one tooth. And what would he do? He'd go and he'd floss one tooth and then he'd be like,
Starting point is 00:03:18 well, I'm already here. I might as well just finish the rest of the teeth. There was also another author that I remember reading and he said that for years he tried to start meditating but it was hard to get himself to motivate himself to sit down for 20 minutes every single day to meditate. And so what he did was he made a commitment to himself to sit down on his meditation pillow for one minute a day. Not even meditate, just to sit down on it. And what he found was once he was there, it was easy to go for 10, 15, 20 minutes in a meditation. So both of those two, flossing their teeth and meditating started with a very simple, very easy task. Because most of the time, the problem is not that the task is hard, it's just that it's harder for us to start.
Starting point is 00:04:09 And so in order to actually make a habit start and stick is to make it as simple and easy as possible for you to actually get going on that habit. So whatever the habit is that you want to create, whatever it might be, ask yourself, how can I make it as simple and easy as possible for me to implement this in my daily routine? Today, I'm going to tell you how you should have confidence that you can do anything that you want to. And I'm going to start off by telling you a story and telling you not to be a donkey. There's an old tale that says if you were to put a donkey, which are considered very stupid animals, and have it stand there and with equal distance to its right you have you put water and to its left you put hay. So it could
Starting point is 00:04:55 drink or it could eat. That if they were equal distance away it wouldn't know which one is closer, it wouldn't be able to make the decision which one it wanted first, and that the donkey would die because it wouldn't be able to make the decision which one it wanted first, and that the donkey would die because it wouldn't be able to make the decision. This very, very simple decision it would not be able to make. And some of the problems that people have and why this story relates to you is because most people have big dreams or big things they want for their lives, but they have a million things they want to do. And in turn, they never do anything. They just sit there because they have paralysis by analysis.
Starting point is 00:05:31 They think of all of the things they could do, all of the things they want to do, and then they do nothing. And so what I'm going to tell you is this, you can have and do anything that you want to in life. You could do pretty much anything that you want to in the 80, 85, 90 years that you're on this planet, but you just can't do them all at one time. And so the easiest thing to do is to look at what you want to do and realize that you still have 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years on this planet. You don't have to worry about doing everything right now. What you need to do is think about what you want to do. Think about everything you want to
Starting point is 00:06:11 do and then go, what do I need to focus on right now? Do I need to focus on the water or do I need to focus on the hay? Because if I try to go after both of them at the same time, I won't be able to make the decision of which one I want. Another example of this is the same time, I won't be able to make the decision of which one I want. Another example of this is the quick story, I guess the quick phrase that you can't chase two rabbits and expect to catch both of them. What you have to do is make the decision of which rabbit you want to go for because if you try to catch both rabbits, it's not going to happen. It's impossible.
Starting point is 00:06:42 You need to look at both of them, decide which one you want to go for first and go for that rabbit. So if you're paralyzed, if you're not doing anything, if you feel demotivated, the reason why is because you might have paralysis by analysis. You might be holding yourself back by thinking of all of the things that you want to do. And so the easiest things to do to not be a donkey is to decide which one you're going to focus on right now. And so next time you feel paralysis by analysis, tell yourself this one quick phrase. Don't be a donkey because you can have and do anything that you want to, but you just can't do all of it at one time. Well, that's it for today's podcast. If you want the show notes for this episode,
