The Mindset Mentor - Ep 103 - How to Slow Time Down

Episode Date: April 15, 2016

We always talk about how life is too short but the question I want you to think about is - Is life actually short or are we speeding it up? We are constantly trying to keep ourselves busy and entertai...ned and I have found that doing so actually makes time feel like it is moving faster. When we slow down time slows down. In this episode I talk about how I figured this out and how you can use this in your life as well. The link I speak about in the episode is MWFmotivation.com/episode103 Want to learn more about Mindset Mentor+? For nearly nine years, the Mindset Mentor Podcast has guided you through life's ups and downs. Starting point is 00:00:51 starts now. Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial and I have a very exciting announcement. I know the past about three months or so I've been talking about this new business that I started that we launched, but then people keep reaching out and asking what the business is, what our products are, if they could try them, buy them, whatever it is. And so we wanted to do the trial and do a soft open before we have a huge opening. And so now that we ran out of our first 500 products in 30 days and we got the next thousand in and we're back up for sale, I can tell you about it. And we have a fitness company. Our very first product is a foam roller, which you lay on,
Starting point is 00:01:37 you massage out your muscles. It's like a very deep tissue muscle massage that gets the oxygen back to your muscles, but then at the same time kind of relieves the lactic acid. It's really good for before working out and after working out. If you do want to get one, if you want to, like I charge absolutely nothing obviously for this podcast. So if you want to support us in some way, you can actually get 20% off. If you go to mwfmotivation.com slash episode 103. It's in the actual show notes. There's a link to it and the code for the 20% off, which will just be the next couple days. You can actually get it for 20% off. And that's basically just the kind of the break-even point so that you guys can get it for the price that it's costing us to have it. And if you want to support us, I would greatly appreciate it. If you like us on Facebook us, I would greatly appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:02:25 If you like us on Facebook, you'll see the Facebook post that's going to be up there as well. But like I said, if you want to check out the product that we now have, it's mwfmotivation.com slash episode 103. Another announcement that I'm going to make is I'm going to try my darndest
Starting point is 00:02:42 to put up as many videos as I possibly can with episodes, also without episodes. So if you want to watch this and see what I look like, I'm actually recording it right now and I'm looking at myself in my camera. You can actually go to the same exact website that I just told you, mwfmotivation.com slash episode 103. I will upload this. And that's basically all I can think of. So if you want to go to that, you can go to, you can see the video that I recorded. You could see the massive amount of overflowing books that are behind me from my bookshelf that I have, which needs to relocate. But you can see the
Starting point is 00:03:21 office that I'm in as well. But besides that, what I want to talk about today is slowing down, slowing down and disconnecting. And if you listen to the last episode, I talked about how I went to Nicaragua and it was very eye-opening for me. And even though I've been to a third world country before, I don't think that you can ever go to a third world country and not see it as eye-opening and not seeing it as an amazing experience because there's so many things to be grateful for in the world that we have now, especially in the United States, there's so many things to be grateful for if you take time to actually look at them
Starting point is 00:03:51 and try to be grateful for them. Now, that being said, one thing that I did realize is we were in the middle of nowhere in this beautiful house that was on the edge of a cliff and it was just ridiculous. It was the most amazing view I've ever seen in my life. But the best part about it was is that our phones didn't work and there was no Wi-Fi. And that was one of the greatest gifts that we could have had because I feel like we're
Starting point is 00:04:14 so connected all the time. We're always constantly on, you know, we're connected in Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and text messages and emails. And we just can't disconnect anymore, it seems like. It seems like we're just constantly in communication with everybody else in the outside world. And I'll take you through my experience of exactly what it was like to go to Nicaragua. So we went to Nicaragua and the very first day, we got there at night. And the very next day, we had a full day. It was myself, it was my girlfriend, and then it was two of my good friends. And one thing that I noticed was that the very first day, even though we had no phones or anything, it was a struggle to slow ourselves down and to actually take time and look at this amazing view and all of the mountains and everything that was around us because we're so
Starting point is 00:05:01 used to being connected all the time. We're so used to constantly getting messages and people sending us stuff and constantly having things come in all the time and being able to check Facebook when we're bored or we're sitting in an office and waiting for something. So with that being said, it was very hard for us to disconnect. And one thing I noticed was that my girlfriend and my two friends were wandering around the kitchen trying to find something to do the very first day. And I was watching them and in my head, I was laughing. And I was like, I wonder if they're going to actually notice that they are wandering around as much as they are just trying to find something to do. And eventually my girlfriend was like,
Starting point is 00:05:38 what are we doing? We're just trying to figure out a way to entertain our brains and to keep going. It's like our brains are addicted to constantly being stimulated all day long. That's just what we're somewhat addicted to. And it was a big thing for us to notice because at that point in time, it was like, oh, we really need to just sit back and slow down. And what we noticed was something that was really crazy. And I brought up the point that when we slow down, when we make it a point to slow down, when we sit out on the back porch of this incredible place and just drink coffee and listen to the waves
Starting point is 00:06:13 for a couple hours, it seemed like when we slowed down, that time actually slowed down. You know, sometimes you go through a day and you wake up and you immediately start working and then you're seven, eight, nine, 10 hours into the day and you're up and you immediately start working. And then you're seven, eight, nine, 10 hours into the day. And you're like, holy crap, how did I just go through the entire day straight working? That was the fastest day I've ever had. Well, what was interesting was that
Starting point is 00:06:36 when we slowed down, when we made time to slow down, it seemed like the world slowed down with us. And I was curious and I was thinking about it. I was like, man, this is crazy. Because if you think about it, we always talk about how life is so short, how there's never any time to do anything and how it's a pity that we don't get longer on this earth. And that life is so short. Everyone says it. Life is so short.
Starting point is 00:06:58 You have to appreciate it. And I agree. But the question that I posed to them was, is life really that short? Or do we just fill the time so ridiculously thick? There are just so many things to do and constantly find ways to take our mind and have it filled with something. And just, we're so addicted to that information that it seems like it goes by so much quicker. So it's time. What the question was, is life really that short or is it that we're
Starting point is 00:07:25 speeding life up by making sure that we do all of these things? And so what I said was time slows down when we slow down. So with this short episode, what I want you to think about is how can you learn to start disconnecting? How can you take one day a week, maybe Saturday, and you just leave your phone at home? What would happen? Some people are like, I'm saying that some people are freaking out and going, there's no way I can never leave my phone at home. What if something happens? What if the world explodes? And what if an emergency happens and all of these things? Well, what if an emergency happened 30, 40 years ago? They would figure out a way to work with it. I remember one of my friends was in another
Starting point is 00:08:01 country with his girlfriend and she's like, well, we're not going to have cell phones. What do we do if I happen to get lost from you? And he said, well, if this was 30 years ago, you would find a way to get back to our house. You would find a way to get back. Sometimes things happen, but this happened 30 years ago. There wasn't always, there haven't always been cell phones around us that we can use constantly. And so the question that I want to, to post to you and the challenge that I want to post to you and the challenge that I want to
Starting point is 00:08:25 post to you in this episode is how can you start disconnecting yourself? And some of you, that's a scary thing. How can you stop Snapchatting every single thing that happens to you throughout the day? How can you stop updating Facebook and Twitter and Instagram and all of those things? Can you take one day? Can you take Saturday? This episode is going to come out on a Friday. So can you take tomorrow and leave your phone at home and completely disconnect yourself? And one thing that I started doing, which I absolutely love, and I'm actually going to give you guys an idea of what I'm talking about is I disconnect my phone, my data so that I can't get data and I can't get anything unless I'm connected to Wi-Fi. And if you're watching the video, you can see that I'm going to prove it right here. You can see that it says my data
Starting point is 00:09:10 is disconnected. It is not currently on right now. Actually, yeah, it says right there. Mobile data is not turned on if you're looking at the video. I never have my mobile data turned on. And the reason why is because I realized when I go out to dinner with my friends, when I go out to hang out with my friends and we're sitting around a table, I don't have my phone going off with all of the different notifications that I have. And I have found that I am more in the moment. I am more present with my mobile data turned off than any other time. So the question that I want to pose to you is how can you figure out a way to disconnect yourself more often? Because when you sit back and you sit on, for instance, if you looked at my, I'm funny,
Starting point is 00:09:51 I'm going to say that I, I, I Snapchat this morning. You can see this morning that I Snapchatted my dog and we were out in the back porch and I was drinking coffee and he was just sitting next to me in the chair and I Snapchat it and sent it over to show that, you know, sometimes I just sit in the back porch and it's very rare that I have my phone next to me in the back porch or my computer, any of those things. And I just try to disconnect. I take the first two hours of my morning and I'm completely disconnected before I go into anything, before I go into emails. I work on myself before I work on everything else that I need to work on. And so my question to you, my challenge to you is, can you disconnect yourself?
Starting point is 00:10:26 Because when you find a way to slow down, you find a way to slow everything, slow time. Time just slows down. Now, it's hard for you to get used to, but if you want to learn to appreciate stuff more, you need to find a way to slow down. So I'm sorry if this is a little bit of rambling, but I wanted to just go off the top of my head with nothing planned and just ask you, can you figure out a way to
Starting point is 00:10:49 be more present and more in the moment by turning off your mobile data or by making a conscious decision to disconnect yourself more often for a couple hours a day? Or maybe at 7 p.m. you stop using any type of internet or any phone or anything like that. Can you figure out a way to challenge yourself and do that and see if you learn to appreciate more and to slow down? So that's the challenge that I want to give to you. Once again, if you want to go to Facebook, I'm sorry, if you want to go to mwfmotivation.com slash episode 103, you can see this video, which some of you are watching right now. And you can also see the product that we just came out with, which is on Amazon. It is the foam roller for rolling out your muscles and everything. And if you want to buy one at 20% off, it would greatly support us
