and leave you with thoughts to impact your life and mind.
My name is Rob Dial, and the podcast starts now.
Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial, your host. And today we're going to
be diving into a topic that is inspired by a chapter in Jack Canfield's book.
The book is called The Success Principles, and I was reading it and got inspired to make a podcast episode on this.
The topic of today is what do you want in your life? Decide what you want in your life. Decide what you want in your life. And most people, they have a general idea of what
they want in their life. They want to be successful and they want to have a great family and they want
to be surrounded by love. And there's a lot of things that people kind of want, but there's no,
it's a lot of generalizations. There's no specific, hey, this is exactly what I want
in my life. And today we're going to talk about
deciding exactly what you want in your life and steps to go about getting it. And the main reason
why most people don't really get what they want in life is because of the fact that they don't
know exactly what they want in their life. So what do you want in your life? You know,
what, you know, a question you should ask yourself. So what do you want in your life? A question you
should ask yourself, and this is a process that I've been going through for a while and trying to
figure out my reason for being alive and what am I passionate about? And that's where this podcast
came from. And one of the questions you need to ask yourself is what is the reason you are on this planet? Why are you on this planet?
Is it just to, you know, eat food and, you know, take a poop and then breathe all of
the air and send it all out as carbon dioxide?
I don't think that's the reason why you're on this earth.
I think there's probably some greater good, something that you're born to do, something
that would make you happy to do the
rest of your life. And it's not for me to decide what it is for you. It's for you to decide for
yourself. So when you die, because ultimately you will die, it's going to happen with all of us,
how do you want to be remembered? In the book that I'm talking about, Jack Canfield, he talks about
when you're born, you already know what you want when you're born. So we kind of go backwards the older we get.
You know what you want when you're born. When you're hungry, you cry until you get food.
You know, when you're scared, you cry until you're okay. If there's something that you want,
you cry until you get it. You know what you want and you just basically demand that you get it
when you're little. And that's just how it works. So what happened? Well, somewhere along the way,
as you were growing up, someone said to you, you can't have that. Give that to your brother. Give
that to your sister. Stop being so selfish. You can't do that. You want to be president?
You can't be president. As you're growing up, people start to say that type of stuff to you
as you get older. It might've been cool to say you want to be president. You know, there's, as you're growing up, people start to say that type of stuff to you as you get older. You know, it might've been cool to say you want
to be president at five, but then when you get to like 17, 18, people start saying, you want to be
president? That's stupid. Why don't you be realistic? So no, you know, people say those
types of things and who cares what anybody says to you? What you have to realize is this is your
life. You know, I read a book called the Five Regrets of the Dying, the top five regrets of people who are in hospice and who are dying and
on their deathbeds. And one of the things, one of the top five regrets of people who are dying say
they don't, or excuse me, they wish they wouldn't have lived their life to other people's standards.
They wish they would have done what they were passionate about and what they wanted to do.
So this is your life. You're the only one
that's in your life. You need to decide exactly what you want and exactly what you want to do.
You know, and people might say, you know, get a real job. That's stupid. You know,
maybe you want to be a painter or something like that. And your mom and dad think you should do
something else because, you know, what you're doing right now doesn't please them or becoming
a painter doesn't please them. Or, you know, if they're at a dinner party and people say,
what do your kids do? You know, they would rather say doctor instead of painter. And, you know,
this is a generalization. Your parents might be very supportive. My mom is very supportive of
everything that I do, but I do know that there's some parents that are out there that want you to
be a doctor instead of a painter and they want you to do this instead of that. So a lot of the times too, just so you guys know,
it's also because the fact they care about you, and they want you to go the secure route,
you know, and they want you to go where they know you can make money and be secure and not have to
worry about the essentials of life of food and shelter and clothing and all of those things.
So they want you to go secure out sometimes. And the problem with going the secure route
is very rarely does the secure route actually mean fulfilling. And some people might be in the
secure route because you have a family and you have a wife and kids and all of these things.
But let's say you're a husband and you're, just to give you an example, you have a wife and kids and all of these things. But, you know, let's say you're a husband and you're, just give you an example, you're
a husband and you're in a job that you hate and you work in a cubicle and you know that
you're passionate about something else, right?
You know, you're passionate about, let's say painting or something like that.
You know, let's say you're passionate about painting and you're stuck in a cubicle and
you have a family that you have to feed.
You have to do everything for them.
So it's hard for you to
just quit your job. I understand that and just go straight to becoming a painter.
But you also have to realize when you're growing up, your kids are growing up and they're watching
you as they grow up. Do you want them to see their father or their parent go through life and be
unsuccessful or not do what they're passionate about or not be as happy as they possibly can. Because in a sense, whatever they see you do, they're probably
going to start doing as well. So if you're trying to take the secure route and try not to live your
passion, there's a chance your kids might not live their passion. So maybe something that you
want to do is, if painting is your passion for this, maybe do it on the weekends.
Maybe start selling it on eBay or you can get the app on iPhone called Van Gogh where
you can actually sell it to people and people can scroll through and look at stuff.
Maybe you can make side money that way.
And then once you start building up and start getting better, well, then you could start
saying, you know what?
I actually might be able to quit my job.
So there's very, not very easy.
There's definitely ways that you can go in order to follow your passion. And that can eventually
be a secure way. So, you know, what would you be doing if money were no object? You know,
if you want to hear something really good, look up Alan Watts on YouTube. And I think the video
is called If Money Were No Object. And, you know, he says,
if you work just to make money and you don't like your job and you don't like what you're doing
and you're just following the money and you're working for money to live, well, then you will
be doing things that you don't like doing in order to keep living, which is to be doing things that
you don't like doing.
So that's a tongue twister. So let me repeat it real quick. If you're following the money and you're taking the secure out and you don't like that, you're taking the secure out so that you
can live, right? If you work just to make money and you don't like what you're doing, you don't
like your job and you're just following the money, then you will be doing things you don't
like doing in order to keep living, which is to be doing what you do not like doing.
So if you think about it that way, you know, what would you be doing if money were no object?
You know, it's better to live a short life doing things that you love to do than to have
a long life that you live in an absolute miserable
way. So think about when you were a kid, what did you want to be when you were a kid? It's always
exciting stuff. They want to be firemen or girls want to be the first female president
or a pilot or an astronaut or something cool or something fun. Nobody ever says,
I want to just work a desk job
and clock in and clock out and hate every hour that I'm working at the place. So along the way,
people change their plans, not based on their personal interests. They usually change their
plans just based on security. So don't live a life unlived. There's a lot of unhappy people out there
and they're unhappy because they go
the route that their family thinks that they should go or that society, you know,
says that they should go. And, you know, 10, 20 years down the road, they go this route because
they feel like this is the route they're supposed to go. And then they realize that the direction
that they went is not the direction that they wanted. And they've lived 10, 20 years doing this and not being fulfilled. So I ask you,
what do you want in your life? You need to decide what you want if it's not something that you're
passionate about. If money were no object, how would you fill your time? You know, if there was
no such thing as money, what would you be doing with every waking hour that you have? What is your passion? If you don't have a passion, you know, write down
a list of things that you love to do. You know, say you love, you know, write a list of 20 things
that you love doing that you would do absolutely and probably do right now. You do these and don't
get paid to do them. What do you love to do? Is there a way to figure out, you know, exactly the route you want to go doing something that you love to do that you could do
if money were no object and figure out a way to make money for it. So what makes you smile,
you know, just thinking about it and can you figure out a way to make that your profession?
You know, do you want to travel or something like that? Is there a way that you could travel and,
and, you know, say you have a, you know, you love to read about places or you might have a history
background and stuff, and maybe you could be a tour guide and you could travel, you know,
do you want to backpack Europe or something like that? Uh, I quit my job in 2012 and backpacked
Europe for three months. And, uh, the crazy thing was I told everybody, you know, that I was about to quit my
job and go to Europe, you know, in six months and then in three months, in two months. And I told
40, 50, 60, I don't know, so many people that were older than me. Not one person that I spoke to said,
that's not a good idea. You should stay at your job. Every single person I talked to said one of
two things.
Number one, they said, I backpacked Europe.
It was the best thing that I've ever done in my entire life.
Or number two, they said, you know what?
I wish I would have done that when I was younger,
when I had the chance to, before I got older.
And it wasn't able to go and backpack or do those types of things
because of the fact that I had a family or something like that. So everybody says, you know, I was the best thing I ever did
and I did it. Or they said, I wish I would have done that. Not one person said, you know, don't
quit your job and go backpack Europe. Most people, you know, they go the sensible route though.
And, uh, they do the sensible route and figure out it's not what they want. And they go
the sensible route because they become numb to their desires. You know, when you're a kid, you
dream, you imagine, you have all these great things that you want to do and everything is exciting to
you. And as you get older, society puts you into a box and says, you can't keep thinking that way.
You can't keep imagining that way. You can't, you know, be everything that you want to be. And
people get kicked in the face and they get numb to their desires and they forget everything that they
ever wanted and everything that they want to be. So, you know, figure out what you want. And if
you're trying to figure out what you want, don't say, I don't know, in your own head. Try to figure
it out. You know, this is your life. You deserve to have everything that you want in this life. You
deserve to be able to get everything that you want. You have to work for it, but you deserve to get it. You only get one chance.
This isn't like a practice and then you get another chance at life. You need to figure
out what you want if you really want to be happy and what you're passionate about.
So follow your heart. I promise you, if you follow your heart and you get really good at
whatever it is, you can figure out a way to do it and you can figure out a way to make money doing that.
If you follow your heart, the money will follow too.
And most people who love what they do, they don't care about making a living and eventually
the money starts coming because of the fact they get really good at what they do and people
will pay for their services, whether it's a painter, whether it's a musician, whether
it's somebody who just loves fixing cars
or something like that.
So what I would say is if I were to, you know,
say something that you should do
to help you figure out what your passion is
or to help you figure out what it is
that you could switch your job to later on down the road,
make a list of 20 things.
You know, what would you do for free?
If, you know, if, what do you love to do what would you do for free? If you know, if what do you love to do that you
could do for free? What makes you smile just thinking about it? And is there a way that you
can make money from it? Because you have to realize that, you know, this is your life.
Don't let anybody tell you what you can and can't do. You know, once you figure out this is it,
this is what I want to do. This is my passion.
Don't let anybody, not one person talk you out of it because people are going to tell you you're crazy. People are going to say that you're unrealistic, that you need to be realistic,
that you need to go the safe route, you know, that you need to grow up, find what you want
and make a mission statement and read that mission statement, you know, something that excites you.
Make a mission statement, something that excites you and read it every single morning, read
it every single night before you go to bed, something that gets you excited and then share
your vision with people and people will want to help you and people will want to figure
out, you know, a way that they can help you out in some sort of way.
So to leave you with two things today, the first thing I would say is, you know, take out a piece of paper, write down 20 things that you love to do, you know, that if money were no object, you would be doing these things and filling your time with these 20 things. with my girlfriend and I'll tell you the conversation was she loves dogs. And I was
like, you know what? You should just, you know, figure out a way to, you know, you love dogs so
much. You should just figure out a way to, I don't know what it is, but if you start thinking about
it, just figure out a way that you can start making money and being able to work with dogs
and all that stuff. And then we saw something on Facebook that was called a bark box. And it was
just like, you know, a monthly subscription
that people pay like 40 or 50 bucks. And then once a month, they get a bunch of toys sent to
them for their dogs to play with. And, you know, somebody's making a ton of money off that because
the BarkBox thing has like 1.2, 1.5 million likes on Facebook. So somebody's making some pretty good
money off of it from a hobby that they probably, you know, they love hanging out with dogs or something like that. So what is it? What would you do
if money were no object? Make a list of 20 things you love to do, 20 things that just make you smile
thinking about, you know, and figure out how you can make money off of that. If that's what you
really want to do and you want to live a passionate life and something that you really love to do.
And the second thing, as always, every single episode,
make it your mission today to make somebody else's day better. And if you love this episode,
if it brought you some type of value and you think somebody else needs to listen to it,
if you would share it with them, I would greatly appreciate it. We're trying to change the world
and make people live more passionately one person at a time. Have a great day.
And so that is it.
