Starting point is 00:01:15 We're trying to change the world one person at a time and give you some tips on how to overcome rejection today. So today's topic is overcoming rejection. And to be successful and to get everything that we want from life, we have to deal and learn to deal with rejection. And rejection and dealing with it is actually counterintuitive to what's actually in our genes as humans. Because if you think about it, thousands of years ago, we as humans, we needed to be around other humans and impacts to survive. We needed to have them for safety, for food, for shelter, for everything you could possibly think of.
Starting point is 00:01:52 So it's counterintuitive to go against rejection. But nowadays, accepting rejection and being okay with it is the only thing that's holding us back from living the life of our dreams. So a story that I actually love about rejection is of Sarah Blakely. And you might not know the actual name Sarah Blakely. She's a multi-billionaire. And she started a company called Spanx. And I was actually never even heard of Spanx before. And I had to Google it. But it's a women's clothing company. It's underwear type or something, I guess. I don't know, but you could probably Google and find out if you wanted to. But she's a multi-billionaire from this. And when she was young, her dad actually encouraged her and her family to fail. So,
Starting point is 00:02:36 every single night at the dinner table, he would ask, how did you fail today? And he was not happy unless they failed in some sort of way. His realization back then was that in order to be successful and for them to have successful lives, he needed to teach his kids to be okay with failure and to make sure they realize it's a part of life. And she talks about it and says that this is actually the main reason why Spanx is such a successful company. You know, she would pitch this to other companies, she would pitch it to investors. And she estimates that she got hundreds of no's from investors, from companies, of people who did not want to invest in her product, companies that would not accept it. But she just kept going because she knew that
Starting point is 00:03:15 failure was just a normal part of life. She was conditioned by her father to just fail as much as she possibly could. So her father made sure that she failed every single day. And because of that fact, she was okay with getting hundreds and hundreds of no's from other companies and investors, and now has a multi-billion dollar company and is worth billions upon billions of dollars. So here's the interesting thing about rejection though. Rejection, if you actually think about it in your mind, it's just really a myth. Rejection really doesn't exist. If you say, for instance, you ask somebody out to dinner at eight o'clock on Thursday and they say no, well, then nothing has actually changed. Your
Starting point is 00:03:54 situation has not gotten worse because you were going to eat dinner at eight o'clock on Thursday anyways. So nothing has actually gotten worse. You just might be eating it without the person who you asked. So everything has just stayed the same. So if you apply to a college and you get rejected from that college, nothing's changed. Your life is exactly the same. You haven't lost anything. So we need to learn to overcome rejection because you never learn or you never lose anything by asking, but you can only stay the same if you don't ask. So if you want to change things and you want your life to become better, you have to learn to ask and be okay with getting rejected. Because if you ask and get rejected, nothing in your life has changed. It's exactly as it was a few minutes before you actually asked.
Starting point is 00:04:43 One thing that I used to teach my sales team was this phrase. We used to always say, some will, some won't. So what? Who's next? You know, some will buy, some won't buy. So what? Who's next? So you can't get caught up in the ones that say no and get down about the people who say no about stuff because around the corner, there's somebody out there that's waiting to say yes to whatever your idea, whatever your product is, whatever your business is, whatever your dream is. And life is just a numbers game. And the secret to success is to never give up. Just develop thick skin and keep going. Colonel Sanders, the guy who started KFC, got over 300 rejections before someone actually believed in his idea. And now there's 11,000 KFC stores in 80 different companies. What would have happened
Starting point is 00:05:32 had he never given up? He wouldn't have that delicious chicken, which I don't need anymore because it's too fatty and all that stuff. But I really wish that I could. But there would be no KFC. If he had over 300 rejections, let's say he stopped it just before the person said yes. Well, then there would have been no KFC at all. The chicken soup for the soul writers, they got 130 rejections on their first book because people thought, companies thought, publishing companies, all of them thought that it had no substance to it. There's nothing in it. It was just a positive story. And they didn't want to have a positive story because they didn't think that people would want to read a positive story. It was too positive. It wasn't going to work is what they said. And Chicken Soup for the Soul
Starting point is 00:06:17 went on to sell over 8 million copies and 80 bestselling books that was translated into 39 languages. So in reality, is it that we're too afraid of rejection? Or is it a reality that we just need to keep asking until we get the people to say yes? Because just because a publishing company said no about this book does not mean that they're right. Because obviously, if they had 130 rejections, that was 130 people that didn't know what the heck they're talking about. they had 130 rejections. That was 130 people that didn't know what the heck they're talking about. So they're not any better or any smarter than you or I. So we got to learn to be able to overcome rejection. The founders of Google in 1998, when they were still in college, they tried to merge Google with Yahoo. And Yahoo rejected them because they wanted to, they just said, you know, I don't
Starting point is 00:07:02 think your company is going to be big. Continue on your college project. If it starts to grow, we can talk later on down the road. Now, Google is worth $365 billion. Meanwhile, Yahoo is worth one-tenth of that. So once again, that's an entire company that was huge in 1998 that rejected them because they didn't think that Google was going to be successful. So to wrap up, we have to realize that rejection is just part of success. We have to be rejected many times on the road to success. So the only thing that we can do is get used to rejection. We can't let that stop us. So you have to develop, you know, we have to develop persistence, develop really thick skin and be okay with getting rejected and continue to be persistent on the road to success. So the two things that I'm going to leave you with today, the two leaving pieces.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Number one, make it your mission today to go out and get rejected. Get used to it. Get rejected as much as possible. If you want to see something really good, go ahead and look up 100 days of rejection. Just Google it. There was a guy who had a fear of rejection and went 100 days in a row trying to get rejected for some of the craziest things he could possibly ask. And it's pretty funny too. You have to see some of this stuff. Like he went
Starting point is 00:08:15 into Dunkin' Donuts and asked them to make him donuts that looked exactly like the Olympic symbol in the logo, thinking that he would get rejected and they actually did it for him. He went to like a humane society and asked to borrow a dog for a day. So it's actually really funny. Look it up. It's called a hundred days of rejection. This guy was trying to learn from his rejection and got a Ted talk out of it. And now he's just used to rejections. It's an awesome, awesome thing to look up. So that's the first thing is to go out and get rejected today. Look that up as well if you have some time. And number two, make it your mission to make somebody else's day better.
