come out every single week.
So today what we're going to be talking about is commitment, the thing that separates the
doers from the dreamers.
And what I'm going to talk to you about and use a lot of quoting is from a book by John
C. Maxwell called Motivated to Succeed.
So Motivated to Succeed.
And he talks about commitment.
And before I dive into the commitment, I'm going to give you a quote on commitment that I love.
And it is from Mario Andretti, the racer.
And it says, desire is the key to motivation, but it's determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal,
a commitment to excellence that will enable you to attain the success you seek.
So as far as commitments, you know, what is commitment?
To each person, commitment is something different.
And I'm going to go through what John C. Maxwell talks about in his book. And he says, to the boxer, it is getting off of the mat one more time when you've been
knocked down.
To the marathon runner, it is running another 10 miles when your strength is completely
gone.
To the soldier, it is going over the hill and not know what's waiting on the other side.
To the missionary, it's saying goodbye to
your own comfort to make life better for others. To the leader, it's all that and more because
everyone you lead is depending on you. If you want to be an effective leader, if you want to be a
successful person, you have to be committed. True commitment inspires and also attracts other people. It shows them that
you have conviction and people are attracted to conviction and passion. It's like the quote says,
if you light yourself on fire, people will come to watch you burn. So they will believe in you
and only believe in your cause as well if you really have that conviction and buy-in.
As the law of buy-in states, people
buy into the leader, they don't buy into the vision. So as far as commitment, three things
that you need to know about commitment. Number one, commitment starts in the heart. Some people
want everything to be perfect before they commit to doing anything for themselves.
before they commit to doing anything for themselves.
But commitment always precedes achievement.
You know, I actually heard, and it says it in here,
that in the Kentucky Derby,
the winning horse effectively runs out of oxygen the first half mile,
and the rest of it goes just on heart.
And that's like Michael Jordan says,
he said, heart is what separates
the good from the great. So if you want to make a difference in other people's lives
and be successful or be a successful leader, look into your heart and see if you're really
committed to your goals and the things that you want to achieve. The second thing to know about
commitment is commitment is tested by action. It's one thing to talk about how committed you are,
but it's something else to actually do it and to work at it.
The only real measure of commitment is action.
And as Arthur Gordon says, nothing is easier than saying words.
Nothing is harder than living them day after day.
So don't wait for things to happen. Go out and
make it happen. Make your own future. So what are you doing when it comes to following through on
your commitments? Are you following through? Are you taking the action needed on your commitments
to be successful? The third thing to know about commitment is commitment opens the door to achievement.
And what does that mean?
On your road to success, you will face plenty of obstacles if you haven't already.
And there will be times when commitment is the only thing that's going to carry you forward.
You know, it's like the quote says, commitment is the enemy of resistance, for it is the
serious promise to press on, to to get up no matter how many times
you're kicked in the face. So if you want to get anywhere worthwhile throughout your entire life,
you must be committed, committed to something. And I can't tell you what that thing is. That's
for you to decide. So when it comes to commitment though, there's really only four types of people.
There's the cop-outs, there's the holdouts, there's the hold-outs, there's the drop-outs, and there's the all-outs. So number one, the cop-out. We all know
these types of people. They're the people who have no goals and they don't commit to anything.
They never make a decision. They never do anything with themselves and they're going to die sadly
without having achieved anything. The second type of person is the holdout, people who don't know if they can reach their goals,
so they're afraid to commit.
And there's a lot of people out there
where they're just, you know,
fear is what holds them back of committing
and going to their goals
because they don't know if they can reach their goals.
And it's easier to not go anywhere
than to go anywhere and fail for them.
The third type of person is the dropout. People who start,
they go towards a goal, but when it starts to get tough is when they decide that they want to quit.
So those are the dropouts. And the fourth person, the person that I hope that you are,
and if you're not at this point, the person that I hope that we all become and we all start working
towards is the all-outs. The people who set goals, they commit to those goals, and they pay the price to reach their goals. They work hard, they commit, they put the action in,
and they eventually reach their goals. So what kind of person are you? You know, have you been
reaching towards your goals lately? Are you achieving all that you really believe that
you can? Or do you think that there's more for you? You know, if you're like me and you're, you know, you're listening to this podcast,
you know that there's more for you. And it's a process every single day to keep working on
ourselves, keep working on our habits to achieve more and become better in everything that we do.
You know, do people believe in you and follow you and your goals and your commitments?
So if you answered no to any of these questions, a problem might be your level of commitment.
So let me give you three quick steps to improve your commitment.
So number one is to measure it.
Sometimes we think we're committed to something, yet our actions indicate otherwise.
committed to something, yet our actions indicate otherwise. So take out your calendar, spend a few hours tallying up the past month of how you spent your time. And if you don't keep a calendar,
you know, what I would say is get to the end of today and look back and see how you spent your
time and try to spend time looking at your calendar and see what you're putting work at.
You know, how much time did you spend at work? How much time did you spend in your passion? How much time did you spend with
your family? How much time did you spend, you know, working on your health or doing recreational
activities and so forth? All of these are true measures of your commitment. And you may be
surprised finding out some of the things that you spend your time on when you're not paying
attention. The second step to improving your commitment is know what's worth dying for. And
this might sound cliche and corny to you, but one of the questions that every leader and every
successful person must ask themselves is, what am I willing to die for? If it came down to it,
what in life would you not be able to stop doing no matter what the consequences were?
So that's a hard question to ask yourself. So what I would recommend is take some time,
some quiet time with yourself, some journaling time, spend some time thinking about what is so
important to you in your life that you would not be able to stop doing. What is worth dying for to
you? Write down whatever you discover and see if your actions are meeting
your ideals. And the last step, the third step to improve on your commitment is to use the Edison
method. If all else fails and if you're taking a step forward and your commitment is the problem,
try to do what Thomas Edison did. When he had a good idea for an invention, what he would do is
he would call a press conference
to announce it.
He would announce to everybody in his company
and then he would go into his lab and he would invent it.
So make your plans public.
If making a commitment is the hard thing for you,
go out and tell people.
Have people hold you accountable for what you want to do.
So tell people what you want to do.
Have them hold you accountable because you might be more do. So tell people what you want to do, have them hold you
accountable because you might be more committed. You should be more committed if people are
expecting for you to do something and they're counting on you to do so. So those are the three
steps to improve your commitment. Number one, measure it. Number two, know what is worth dying
for. Number three, use the Edison method.
