Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial, and if you have not yet subscribed
to us, please do so on iTunes,
Stitcher, or SoundCloud, however you listen to us. And if you enjoy this episode, please share
with a friend, spread the love. All we are trying to do here is just change the world one person at
a time. And in episode 32, I talked about letting things go in your past in order to create the
future that you really desire.
And in this episode, instead of talking about the past, I'm going to talk about letting go
of things that you cannot change that are in the actual present moment. And I've been told many
times by people that I am too calm sometimes. Things don't really seem to affect me too much.
I'll give you a perfect example.
A few years ago when I had my own office, I had a bunch of sales reps and we were in a meeting.
And when we came out of the meeting, we were walking by and we went into another one of my
offices and my TV had been stolen. When we were in the meeting, someone came in, stole my TV,
and left with it. It was like a 42 inch flat screen TV. And after I called the
cops, I just continued on about my day. And they came up to me and they said, you know, why,
why, why are you so calm? You seem like you should be, you just lost a TV. You should be really mad
about this stuff. And I walked them through this thing called can't change it, which is something
I learned from my friend, Hal Elrod. Things are out of your control.
There's really no reason why it should stress you out. So what I said was, you know, this person
stole my TV. They must have needed it more than I do. You know, I'll eventually get another TV,
not really a big deal. And although, you know, it might've cost me four or 500 bucks to get a new
TV, which I probably did not want to spend the money. It was something that I had to do and
there was nothing I could do. I called the cops, They couldn't find it. And, you know, it's something
I learned from Hal Elrod. And we talked about it very briefly in the episode. I think it's episode
12 that he's on. But I want to dedicate an entire episode to this because I think that it's very
important for somebody's happiness. So can't change it is a phrase that I want you to use anytime that something happens negatively to you that's completely out of your
control. So for instance, traffic is a perfect example of this. Traffic happens. We all get
stuck in traffic at some point in time. And most of the time, what do we do when we get stuck in
traffic? We curse, we stress out about it,
we think about how late we're going to be, you know, we get so mad that we just grip the steering
wheel as hard as we can and, you know, our knuckles get all white and we start to get really stressed
out. We tense up our muscles. But when we do something like that, if you think about it,
what is it really doing for us by, you know, getting so stressed out. It's doing nothing good. It's putting our body
through unneeded stress that we really don't need. We can't move the cars that are in front of us.
We can't make them move. The traffic is there. So what can we do? We can't change anything about
the cars. But what we can change about that is our attitude. The great thing about attitude is that we are 100% completely in control of it.
It is 100% up to us. We choose how we want to feel and we choose how we react to every single
situation that happens to us in life. So instead of putting our bodies through stress, we can put
on a really calm song. We can enjoy the ride. We can look at the blue sky and pay attention to all the little
details that we take for granted. You know, we might be able to, since we're going so slow,
we might be able to notice all of the things that we normally miss when we drive by on the
interstate at 80, 85 miles an hour. So see the ride is going to happen either way, but it's
completely in our control. What type of ride it's going to be, whether it's
going to be a very stressful ride or whether it's going to be a relaxing ride. My go-to relaxing
song, I would recommend having a go-to relaxing song or your favorite song, whatever it might be,
that's going to be the song that changes your mood. Mine is just a super simple, relaxing song.
It's the Out of Africa theme song. Out of Africa is a
really old movie. Not really old, but I think it's from like the 80s. And it's just a really calm
song. And to me, it's one of the most calming songs. So I always put it on whenever I happen
to be stressed out or anything like that happens, and it just takes my mood down.
But the key to all of this is to not let outside circumstances in our life control our moods.
It's ourselves that are in control of our moods. So whether it's we're stuck in traffic or somebody stealing my TV,
we're always in control of what happens internally. We're not in control of the traffic.
We're not in control of somebody stealing the TV. Always remember that. Another thing that I think
helps with that is to appreciate all that you have, to have real perspective. And what I mean by perspective is whenever something's happening, you're stuck in traffic or somebody steals your TV or whatever it might be, something like that happens, ask yourself this, 10 years from now, am I going to remember this moment?
to remember this moment? So 10 years from now, am I going to remember being stuck in traffic or whatever it might be? If the answer is no, you're not going to remember it and it's that small of a
problem, why stress out about it? Why let your body go through stress? If you're listening to
my voice, then you have access to the internet and you probably have it much better than most
of the people in the world. Because according to last week,
this was downloaded, this podcast was downloaded 127 countries around the world. So there's a good
chance that you probably have a pretty good life interrelation of others around the world.
There's a lot of really bad stuff that's happening to other people. Know this, that your life is as
great as you make it to be. And what I mean by perspective also is how bad is it to really be
stuck in traffic? Just take yourself out of your own mind and look at it. How bad is it to be stuck
in traffic? And I'm just using this because it's an easy example for the can't change it. Number
one, if you're stuck in traffic, you have a car, you have clothing on, you have food, you have
water, you have shelter, which means that
you have it better than 90% of people in the world. So the best thing to do is to put it into
perspective, sit back and go, oh yeah, I'm just stuck in traffic. Not really a big deal. I can't
change the traffic. So let me enjoy the ride. Turn on your favorite song, enjoy the time.
Because you're going to arrive at that place no matter what, but you are in control as
to whether you arrive stressed out in having your body gone through 15, 20 minutes of stress or
whether you arrive calm and happy because you're going to arrive the same time no matter what,
but how you arrive is up to you. And that boils down to the I can't change it phrase,
which anytime something is out
of your control, I hope that you remember the phrase, can't change it, and make sure that you
continue on with your day and have a good one. So that's what I'm going to leave you with is the
can't change it phrase. And the second thing I'm going to leave you with, as always, please make
it your mission today to make somebody else's day better. If you like this podcast, please share it with a friend.
