Today, what we're going to talk about is worrying and how worrying does not do crap for you. And what we're going to talk about is how to take that worry and replace it with action.
Starting point is 00:01:35 So whenever we start to worry, we need to figure out instead of worrying how we can take action against that worrying. Worrying tends to die down when you're making progress towards your destination. So let me give you an example. If you're in sales and you have to make a thousand dollars this week to pay your mortgage, what good is it going to do to worry about that? Worrying about having to pay your bills, worrying about if people might say no, worrying about if people don't answer the phone or if they slam the door on you, whatever it might be, worrying about the things that might happen. What good is that going to do? What good does
Starting point is 00:02:17 worrying ever do? Worrying does nothing. Worrying takes energy away from you. That energy could be used on taking action. So if you're worrying about how to pay your bills, how to pay your mortgage, how you're going to come up with that thousand dollars, like I said, if you're a salesperson, the worrying feels crippling. I understand that. But ask yourself, what can I do right now about this? Well, you can replace that worrying with action. You know, I can get off my butt. I can start making phone calls. I can stop feeling sorry for myself for this reason or for that reason. And I can make positive movement by taking action. Do something, anything, absolutely anything. Small movement towards your goal is better than standing still.
Starting point is 00:03:07 In Dale Carnegie's book, Stop Worrying and Start Living, there's a quote and it says, George Bernard Shaw was right. He summed it all up when he said, the secret of being miserable is to have leisure to bother about whether you are happy or not. So don't bother to think about it. Spit on your hands and get busy. Your blood will start circulating. Your mind will start ticking. And pretty soon, this whole positive upsurge of life in your body will drive worry from your mind. So get busy, keep busy. It is the cheapest kind of medicine that there is on earth. And it's one of the best.
Starting point is 00:03:44 You know, the successful person goes about life and do what they need. They do what they need to do, regardless of how they're feeling, whether they're worried, whether they're sad, whether they're sick, because all of that is not going to do anything for them. They take action no matter how they feel, because they know that they have to take action. A small step forward is better than standing still. They also know that confidence comes from working at their goals because once they start taking those steps, they start getting more and more confident. And they also know that
Starting point is 00:04:16 motion creates emotions. So instead of sitting down and worrying and staring at the ceiling and thinking about, oh crap, we have the bills coming up, and start worrying about what might happen, they get off their butts, they get their blood moving, they start thinking, and they make things happen. They don't worry about what might happen, they make things happen. I'll give you a perfect example of replacing worry with action. If you're in front of your computer and your computer has 3% battery and it's about to die, if you sit and worry about your laptop dying, is that going to stop your laptop from dying? No, absolutely not. What do you need to do? You need to get off your butt. You need to go get your charger and you need to plug in your laptop. And guess what that's going to do? That's going to
Starting point is 00:05:04 solve the problem. So it's the exact same thing. If you're worrying about the money in your bank account, what is worrying going to do? It's going to do absolutely nothing. What do you need to do? You need to get off your butt. You need to start taking action and figure out how to make money to pay those bills. So most of us, what we do is we see blocks and we see these barriers in front of us. And all of those blocks and those mental barriers and everything, they're all made up in our own minds. So what is it that you've been worrying about too much? What mental barriers do you put in front of yourself? And what action can you take right now to overcome those barriers that you're worrying about? And notice I say right now.
Starting point is 00:05:48 What action can you take right now? Don't plan. What can you do right now to do it? So instead of worrying about the money or how you don't have it, how can you make more money? Instead of worrying about your health, ask yourself,
Starting point is 00:06:00 what can I do right now to improve my health? I can eat a salad. I can get my butt to the gym. I can go for a walk. All of those things are going to help me instead of worrying. And I'll dive into focus, not on this episode, but on another episode. But what you focus on expands. If you focus on how you don't have money, you will always not have money.
Starting point is 00:06:21 If you focus on how your body is sick or how you're not healthy, you will always not have money. If you focus on how your body is sick or how you're not healthy, you will always not be healthy. If you focus on how you're going to make money and how you're going to start making money and stop worrying about it, I don't know how the universe works, but it starts to work in your favor. I'll tell you a story about how this completely worked out for me. And this is a crazy story. But when I first moved to Austin, I moved here in 2012. I didn't have a job. And the reason why was because I quit my job in the summer of 2012 so I could go backpack Europe for three months. Backpack Europe for three months. And while I was over there, I was like, I'm just going to move to Austin. Never been there before. Just heard that it's pretty cool. Never thought I would live in Texas
Starting point is 00:07:01 because I was from Florida. So I moved out to Austinin I didn't have a job for a while and I was talking to my mom And she was asking me she says you don't seem worried about money and at this point in time My money was my bank account was getting very very small And I had to make money and she was saying it doesn't sound like you're worried about it And I said mom what is worrying going to do the world works itself out if I just concentrate on how I can start making money, I'm going to make money somehow. So I ended up getting a job. And about a month after this conversation, this is a completely true story. About a month after this conversation, I got a call from the HR manager at the other company that I had quit the year prior to go to Europe. And she calls me up and she says, Rob, hey, I wanted to tell you
Starting point is 00:07:45 that we made mistakes with commissions over the past three years and you're due for money that we didn't know that you were due for. I was like, that's pretty cool. What is it that I'm due for? Is it a few hundred bucks, a few thousand bucks? And she said, are you driving? And I said, yes. She said, pull over because I think you might want to hear this number. And I said, okay, cool. I pull over and she said, the number is $23,000 and some changes, 23,000 something. And what I, I don't know how the world or the universe works in this way, but I wasn't worried about money. I wasn't worried about a job. I knew that it would work itself out. And I feel like when you don't worry about those things, it's like the world and the universe want to help you and add to your success, your bank account, whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:08:32 I don't know how it works. All I know is that it works. And that's the mindset I always keep. I was not worried about getting a job and getting money. I got a job, I got money, and then I got a bank account. I called it my bank account, got an extra $23,000 because they made mistakes on commissions. So if you keep worrying about being broke, you will always be broke. The universe is on your side when you take action.
Starting point is 00:08:55 So ask yourself this, and I'm going to leave you guys with this. Ask yourself, what am I worrying about right now that's taking away from my happiness? am I worrying about right now that's taking away from my happiness? What are you worrying about? And ask yourself this question, what action can I take right now to overcome the outcome that I'm worried about? What can you do right now? What action can you do right now to replace that worry and to overcome that outcome that you're worried about. So that's what I'm going to leave you with.
