the podcast starts now.
Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. I'm your host your host Rob Dial and I hope that your New Year's resolutions are going incredible
We are still in the very first week of 2016
and we're gonna be talking a little bit about your goals and achievement and how achievement is
Addicting and before we do that if you like this episode, please share with a friend. We're trying to get to
1 million downloads in the first 12 months,
and we are over 185,000 downloads. And we can't get to a million in the first 12 months without
your help. So also, if you haven't subscribed, please do so on iTunes, Stitcher, SoundCloud,
however you listen to us. So achievement is addicting. And small victories will build your
confidence throughout all of the achievements. So
it's easy to look at a really big goal and that big goal can be really scary. And a lot of people,
they'll give up when they have really big goals because they feel like when they go through
little achievements, those little achievements are not enough to get them to that big goal.
Or they give up because of the fact that their goals scare them. So it's important for us
to start off with very small victories in order to build our confidence. And this is something
that I used to do with my sales reps. And, you know, I had sales reps that would come in and say,
you know, Rob, I want to sell $10,000 this week. And it'd be their very first week on the job. And, you know, I love that people set big goals in that way,
but my main goal for them was not to get them to sell $10,000 in their first week on a job.
My main goal was to get them to sell just a little bit their first week on the job and start to build
their confidence and build from there. Because very rarely, very, very, very rarely out of a couple thousand people that I trained, very rarely did somebody sell
$10,000 in their very first week on the job. So you have to realize, let's say that someone comes
in and they want to sell $10,000 their first week on the job and they only sell a thousand. Well,
to them, they seem like they came up short and that's going to help them, not help them, but that is going to have them lose their confidence. So what I would say is
instead of saying $10,000 in the first week, I'd say, okay, listen, I love your goals. I love that
you want to go really big. How about we just go for 1,000 just for this week? And then once they
hit that 1,000, then they get excitement and that achievement becomes addicting to them.
So how does this relate to you with your New Year's resolution goals?
Well, let's say you want to lose some weight this year.
And let's say you want to lose 40 pounds this year.
And 40 pounds over 12 months, you could do the math,
you could figure out exactly how much it needs to be.
But when you look at 40 pounds, you might say,
holy crap, I've never lost 40 pounds in my entire life.
Maybe you've never even lost 10 pounds in your entire life. So 40 pounds to you might look like there's
no freaking way that this is going to happen and that can scare you. So what I always recommend
if someone's trying to go for a big goal like that, why don't you just say, hey, let's make
it my goal. You know, I weigh X amount right now. I want to lose two pounds in two weeks and make
it your mission. That's it. Just to lose two pounds in two weeks and make it your mission.
That's it.
Just to lose two pounds in those two weeks.
And the reason why is because once you lose those two pounds in those two weeks, maybe
you'll even lose three pounds.
Well, then you're going to go, let's say you just lose two pounds in two weeks.
You're going to go, well, man, I did two pounds in two weeks.
Why don't I try to go for four pounds in the next two weeks?
And it'll start to build your confidence because that achievement is addicting.
I got a message today from somebody saying that they've been smoking for 15 years.
They've been smoking cigarettes and they just quit smoking cigarettes, which they, you know,
he actually said that because of listening to the podcast, which I think is awesome.
And I am so appreciative of that.
But let's say you want to quit smoking cigarettes this year.
And let's give you an example.
Let's say you smoke a pack a day.
Well, it's easier to cut that in half and go to half a pack a day
than it is to just go cold turkey.
So you want to get the small achievement of smoking a little bit less.
And then once you smoke a little bit less and you say,
you know what, as of last week I was smoking a pack a day.
Now I'm only smoking a half a pack a day.
Maybe I can get to a quarter pack a day. And it helps you, those small achievements become
very addicting. They're those small victories that, you know, a ton of small victories add up
to a very big achievement. Let's say that eating healthy is your goal for this year.
Instead of just trying to revamp your entire, every single thing that you're eating,
why not try to start
with one meal a day for the first few days or for the first week? And then you go two meals the next
week. And then you try to do all three meals after the third week. So you start to get these small
victories and they help you gain the knowledge and the confidence that you can do this type of
thing. Because what happens is we get what's called the imposter syndrome. And maybe you've heard me talk about this in another episode is where you say,
you know, I want to lose 40 pounds. And then you think, you know what? I've never done that before.
It's impossible. Who am I to try to lose 40 pounds? I'm not one of these people that's on
the front covers. And you get the imposter syndrome of saying, who am I to do this? I'm
not that type of person. And you can talk
yourself out of it. It's easier to talk yourself out when you have these big goals. So I always
say, make sure you break all of your goals down into smaller goals to help you build confidence.
So it's important to remember all of those, just the small victories. So whether it's with yourself
or whether you're helping someone else with their goals, your accountability part, remember to help them start small with everything to build your confidence.
So that was the episode for today.
Very quick one.
I just wanted to talk about the achievement and how it is addicting and how to make sure that you're focusing on small victories.
Focus on your small victories first and then start building on them so you can become better and more fit.
Or maybe quit smoking cigarettes or start eating healthier.
And if you love this episode and you have an accountability partner that's helping you with your 2016 goals, share it with them so you guys can hold each other accountable.
And I'm going to leave you as the same way I leave you every single episode.
Make it your mission to make somebody else's day better.
And one thing I did notice is that I mentioned a couple episodes ago that,
so I mentioned that we have a Facebook page,
which I've never really talked about before.
