The Mindset Mentor - Ep 61 - What If Money Was No Object?

Episode Date: January 8, 2016

In this episode I play audio from one of my favorite philosophers named Alan Watts. He puts our lives into perspective and talks about why we should follow the money, but follow our passions. Then at ...the end I wrap it up with my thoughts on this issue. I made this episode in hopes that you will listen to it over and over again. And if you like this episode, which I think that you will, I just ask that you share it with a friend. And today I'm going to be covering which is probably my favorite video on YouTube. And every time I listen to it, it kind of just puts my life into perspective. And I wanted to share it with you. It's an audio from a guy named Alan Watts, who's a philosopher who died 20 or 30 years ago. And in this audio, he actually talks about how people don't follow their passions
Starting point is 00:01:35 because they believe that there's no money to be found and to be made by following their passions. Yet following our passion is only the real way to truly be happy. So I'll go ahead and let you listen here and then I'll tell you my thoughts at the end. So without further ado, I bring you the audio from Alan Watts. What do you desire? What makes you itch? What sort of a situation would you like? Let's suppose I do this often in vocational guidance of students.
Starting point is 00:02:20 They come to me and say, well, we're getting out of college and we haven't the faintest idea what we want to do so I always ask the question what would you like to do if money were no object what we how would you really enjoy spending your life well it's so amazing as a result of our kind of educational system crowds of students say well we'd like to be painters we'd like to be poets we'd like to be writers but as everybody knows you can't earn any money that way or another person says well I'd like to live an out-of-doors life and ride horses I said you want to teach in a riding school
Starting point is 00:03:01 let's go through with it what do you want to do when we finally got down to something which the individual says he really wants to do, I will say to him, you do that, and forget the money. Because if you say that getting the money is the most important thing, you will spend your life completely wasting your time. You'll be doing things you don't like doing in order to go on living, that is to go on doing things you don't like doing, which is stupid. Better to have a short life that is full of what you like doing than a long life spent in a miserable way. And all if you do really like what you're doing
Starting point is 00:03:47 it doesn't matter what it is you can eventually turn it you could eventually become a master on the only way to become a master of something to be really with it and then you'll be able to get a good fee for whatever it is so we don't worry too much that that's... Somebody's interested in everything. And anything you can be interested in, you'll find others will. But it's absolutely stupid to spend your time doing things you don't like in order to go on spending things you don't like and doing things you don't like and to teach your children to follow in the same track.
Starting point is 00:04:21 See, what we're doing is we're bringing up children, educating them to live the same sort of what we're doing is we're bringing up children educating to live the same sort of lives we're living in order that they may justify themselves and find satisfaction in life by bringing up their children to bring up their children to do the same thing so it's all wretched no vomit it never gets there gets there. And so, therefore, it's so important to consider this question, what do I desire? So that is it. And I hope that you listen to this 100 times, 150 times, anytime that you want to, every single day, if possible. The things that I would take away from this, he asked questions like, what would you do if money were no object? What would you be doing
Starting point is 00:05:11 with your time? How would you be spending your life if money was not some object that was holding you back from your passions? And he says, forget the money because if you say that getting money is the most important thing, then you will spend your entire life completely wasting your time. And you'll be doing things that you don't like doing, which is doing things to make money, in order to go on living. So that is to go on doing things that you don't like doing, which is stupid. And he says, anything that you're interested in, you will find others who are interested in as well. And the last thing that he says, anything that you're interested in, you will find others who are interested in as well. And the last thing that he says, and I'm going to leave you with this, he says, we're bringing up our children and educating them to live the same sort of lives that we're living. So if your kids are seeing you not live your passion and go to a job that you hate or not
Starting point is 00:05:59 doing something that fulfills you, they're learning from you and they're going to do the exact same thing. So ask yourself, is that something that you want your kids to see and your kids to do later on with their lives? So let me ask you this. What is it that you really desire? What would you be doing right now if money were no object? Would you read more? Would you play more music? Would you paint more? Would you travel the world? Would you learn more languages? Would you help other people in the community? Would you save animals or ride horses or do photography? What is it? Let me ask you the question, how much is the world suffering and those around you suffering from you not following your passion and living your true authentic self as well as everybody
Starting point is 00:06:41 else in the world not living their true passion and their authentic self. So if money was no object, then what would you be doing right now? If money is what you're going after, you'll never be satisfied. You must follow your passion and then the money will come. So with that, I want to leave you with
