Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial. I am occasionally joined by my co-host, Dean DeVries. And growing up, our moms always told us that we had the perfect faces for radio. So here we are with our own podcast that comes out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And we compress a massive life topic into about 10 to 20 minutes to help you take control of your life and mind, become the best version of yourself, and follow your passion. Buckle up because the podcast starts now.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Hello, Motivation Nation. Welcome to this episode of the MWF Motivation Podcast. This is Dean DeVries here with my co-host Rob Dial in the beautiful Austin, Texas, getting real weird. This is actually the very first recording that Dean and I have done, and I think we're about eight or nine episodes in, where we're in the same exact city in the same exact room recording, which I just realized, which is nuts because technology nowadays allows us to be able to speak with each other and not even be in the same city and be 1800 miles away from each other. We're really trying to get old school and just sitting on the same couch with each other, speaking into the same microphone. And the benefits of that are that you get to be about
Starting point is 00:01:24 six inches away from Rob Dial's face all the time. So thank you for that, by the way. Yeah, you're welcome. I mean, I have another couch, and I told D to sit on it, but he won't sit on it. He's got to sit next to me. It's not going to be as powerful. It's more powerful when our powers are combined, speaking in the same direction at the mic. So let's go ahead and dive in.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Although I'm not sure if it's necessary that we're arm in arm, but I kind of like it. All right. Well, as always, we're going to go ahead and get started with the quote for this episode. And the quote is, invest in yourself first, expect nothing from no... Yeah, that's it. Invest in yourself first, expect nothing from no one, and be willing to work for everything. What are your initial thoughts about that, Rob? Well, as you're speaking, I'm actually writing down notes. So a couple things. The investment part of it, investment not just as money.
Starting point is 00:02:21 You will need to invest money if you're trying to be successful at something. That is part of it. You have to spend money to make money. No company has ever been started that I am aware of that money hasn't been spent in order to bring money in. That's the first thing I would think. So if you're, one thing we want to talk about a lot is our, is your purpose. And I have a feeling if you're listening to this podcast, you have a purpose and you know what your purpose is. And you might just not be at the position in your life to quit your job or to make a big change. Or sometimes it just could be scary. Or it could be scary. And that's what I was going to say. It could be a scary thing for you to make that change. Or you might be
Starting point is 00:03:03 listening to us and you know that you're destined for better things than you're doing now, but you're not quite sure what that purpose is. anything that you possibly can into finding your purpose and then doing everything that you possibly can to develop your purpose and then take that purpose and give it to the world. I'm really glad that you brought that up because it's important to make the distinction that investing is not just, I mean, everybody thinks about investing as money. Like, oh, well, you know, everybody always thinks, well, I don't have enough money to invest. I never have enough money. But it's not so much investing money as it is investing your energy and your time to really, what Stephen Covey would call, sharpening your saw, developing your craft, developing your vision for yourself. And I love what you said, Rob, about, about, you know, working out of fear by staying in the same day to day actions and not really venturing out to, you know, to really pursue
Starting point is 00:04:14 the greater purpose that you have. And by the way, I've been in a position where I knew that something was something was bigger for me out there that I really needed to use my, my God-given talents and you know, my, my, the gifts that I have to spread, spread that value. But I didn't know why, or I didn't know what the vehicle would be. So I think, um, what would you say, Rob, about people that are in a position where they know that something else is out there for them, or they have a calling, but they haven't quite found it yet? I'm a very firm believer in the, without sounding corny, in the universe playing to your advantages, the advantages for you. So I'll give you an example. Like for instance,
Starting point is 00:05:13 if I decide that I want to, you know, whatever it might be, I might want to open a popsicle shop. Like that's my life goal, right? Let's just say that, you know, I don't want to open a popsicle shop. I haven't eaten a popsicle in probably 10 years. But let's say I want to open a popsicle shop and I've decided that I make really good popsicles and I know that I can. And in my head, I'm like, man, I need to open this popsicle shop. And I make a decision and I finally figure out that that's my life purpose is this popsicle shop. It's funny because once your mind starts to set onto realizing that that's your purpose and that's what you're going for, it seems like the world tends to, to, to help you and conspire in a way to give you hints on this is, you know, you want to own a popsicle shop and oh, you might want to go to this place and talk to this person. It seems like when you start having conversations and you realize and you put out into the world that,
Starting point is 00:05:53 you know, someone might say, hey, what do you do for a job? And you're like, man, I work in sales, but I really just, I'm passionate about making popsicles. I'm really good at it. And this is a great example. I just made this up. I was just going to mention that. It's an awesome example. I'm just a great popsicle maker. But when you start talking to people about it, you start putting it out there into the universe and putting it out into the world, you start to find connections in people that might know someone like, oh, you're a popsicle maker? That's awesome. I know this person who owns an ice cream shop. You should speak to him. I'm a very firm believer in if you figure out what it is and you start to think about it and
Starting point is 00:06:29 you wake up every day and that is your goal is to go and open a popsicle shop and be a successful popsicle maker, then you will eventually get to that point. And some people don't know what their life purpose is. And I, I, and the reason why I know this is because I have been in the past six months to a year trying to speak with people and find out what their purpose is. And the only reason why is because I know people who have jobs that are really great people, really, um, they have a lot to give the world, but they're not giving as much as they can because they're held back by the position that they're in because they're held back by having to pay bills. And so I've tried to talk with people and say, Hey, you know, what is, what, what is your passion?
Starting point is 00:07:13 What do you want to do with your life? And a lot of people I've have found are not sure what it is. And, you know, like I said, at the beginning of the podcast, if you're listening to the podcast, there's a reason why you're listening to it. Either, you know, like I said at the beginning of the podcast, if you're listening to the podcast, there's a reason why you're listening to it. Either you know your purpose and you're just not at the point where you can put time and effort and everything into it, or you're at the very beginning of putting your time and effort and everything into it, or you're in search of what your purpose is, but you know that there's better things out there for you in the world. Then I would say that if you think about it and you keep it in the front of your mind all the time, then the world starts to conspire
Starting point is 00:07:51 for you and make sure that, that you will be successful as a popsicle maker, whatever it might be. So that would be my initial thoughts of the question. What do you know? That's awesome. And just to kind of harp on that, I mean, I love how you talk to talk about how the universe gives you clues. And I mean, isn't it so fitting if that you're listening right now, you are exactly where you need to be. And you are listening to this podcast for a reason. So really let these words inspire you and let it motivate you to if you don't know your purpose, to find that purpose. And if you feel like you found that purpose, to take the next step and really living that purpose. The second part of the quote, though, is expect nothing from no one and be
Starting point is 00:08:37 willing to work for everything. Hold on, before we go into that, actually, I want to interrupt you and go over something. So with me personally, so, so when, what Dean said something really good that I want to go back on and he said, you're exactly where you need to be right now. And the good thing about it is, is most people are like, you know, for instance, I'll give myself an example. I'm 29 years old. I actually just turned 29 last week. And, um, and I'm about to be 30 next year, I just realized. And it's like, man, I I've really, as an example of what I want to do, I really want to be a successful musician. And I'm about to be 30 next year, I just realized. And it's like, man, I've really, as an example of what I want to do, I really want to be a successful musician.
Starting point is 00:09:09 And I really want to be a successful podcaster or motivator and someone who helps people find their life purpose and for greater good of this world. And that's like what I feel my life purpose is. But at 29 years old, it's kind of like, damn, you know, I see people like, for instance, Ed Sheeran, who started at 16 as a, damn, you know, I see people like, for instance, Ed Sheeran, who started at 16 as a musician and, you know, dropped out of school and then moved to London and became, you know, he puts five to six years of just hardcore, somewhat being homeless and all of this stuff. And now he's a super, super successful person. He's only like, I don't know, 22, 23, 24 years old now. And, and I'm 29 looking at him and going, shit, I wish I had that success.
Starting point is 00:09:44 I'm so far behind the game if I think of it that way. But then what I think about as far as where I am now, there's a lot of stuff that happened in my life that kind of prepared me to be where I am to help me be what I want to be later on in life. So for instance, Dean and I used to work for Cutco Cutlery. I was a manager with them, started off as a sales rep, moved up into manager position and had to learn how to speak in front of people.
Starting point is 00:10:09 And it started off with my, you know, an interview that I ran for two people. And then it grew to five people, 10 people, 20 people in a training. And then we started running 17 hour training seminars and, and public speaking became basically my life working for this company. And then I got to the point where I was, you know, we spoke in front of 800 to 900 people for 45 minutes all by ourselves up on a stage. And it was something that became very natural to us. And if you think about being a musician, being on stage by yourself in a very vulnerable state is something that you have to get used to. And it's very scary for a lot of them, but what's crazy looking back, you can, you know, hindsight's 2020, you can connect the dots looking back, but you can never connect the dots looking forward. Is that I've already prepared myself in my past life, quote unquote, working for other companies or doing other things to prepare myself to be able to be in front of people and perform in front of people without being as nervous as I could have been having never had that experience.
Starting point is 00:11:07 So for instance, all of you people out there, where you are now is maybe not where you want to be, but what you have done in your past has prepared you to be where you are, to be where you're going. And give you all the tools necessary in order for you to really make the most of your future because all we have right now is the moment and that's it. That's the only thing that we have. And the decisions that we make that haven't been made yet, those are what's going to determine the future. So you have everything up until this point, you've been equipped with everything you need to make the right decisions.
Starting point is 00:11:41 Yeah. So basically the second part of the, the second part of the quote that I want to delve into a little bit is expect nothing from no one and be willing to work for everything. And I'm just going to go ahead and tackle this real quick. So, um, yeah, basically I think that whenever, whenever your expectations from, uh expectations from people are nothing at all, that puts you in the driver's seat of your life. Because you don't come from a position of what can people do for me or the things that happen to me are what is going to determine my future. So it throws the victim card completely out of the picture and you take full control of your life. So having expectations of the outside world is actually nebulous because it doesn't even matter what happens in the outside world. Life is not what happens to you.
Starting point is 00:12:36 Life is how you respond to the things that happen to you. Things happen to everybody. But people react in certain ways. And so harping onto the point that we just made, you've been equipped with all the tools that you need right now to deal with those future things. So what are your thoughts on that, Rob? That's a good question. Yeah. So, so my thoughts are this, your success solely depends on you and your motivation to do it. And it is very hard to, to get motivation out of thin air. And, um, and I think that's why we're, we talk about Dean to give you guys an idea. Dean and I spoke a lot today about, about how we want to,
Starting point is 00:13:21 to talk a lot about purpose and realize that everyone has a purpose of the reason why they're here. And I think that once you figure out what your real purpose is, not your purpose of, oh, I want to be a good salesperson or what it is, but why do you want to be a good salesperson? What is the reason behind it? What is the reason why you want to open an office or open a Popsicle stand or whatever it might be? Once you find your real purpose, then I think it makes it a lot easier for you to go out and get kicked in the face a lot because being successful caught to be successful, you have to go through a lot of failures in order to be successful. So when you find that true purpose, it makes it a lot easier to get up after you get
Starting point is 00:14:05 kicked in the face every single time. So when someone says, you know, the quote is nobody's going to work harder than you. Or the quote is, I can't even read your handwriting. Expect nothing from no one. Okay. Expect nothing from no one, which is a good thing because nobody is going to care about your success more than you. And you have to be the person, like Dean said, that's in the driver's seat. You can't be in a car that's on its destination to your success and you're in the passenger seat. You're the only person that's in it.
Starting point is 00:14:38 You're the only driver. You're the only freaking seat inside of that. And there might be people that help along the way. But I want you to realize that in order for you to be successful, you have to put in the work, you have to put in the blood and the sweat and the tears, and you have to stay up late sometimes because you might be working a job from nine to five or nine to six, whatever your hours might be, you know, eight to five, eight to six, something like that, which requires a ton of time. And you come home and you're so freaking tired that you just don't want to put time into doing something else. But you know that putting time into something
Starting point is 00:15:08 else is the one reason why you're put on this planet. And that if you put the time into it, you will eventually be able to maybe monetize whatever that passion or that purpose is, which will allow you to be able to leave the job that you are just using to pay the bills so that you can live a happy, successful life, fulfilling the purpose that you are just using to pay the bills so that you can live a happy, successful life, fulfilling the purpose that you were put on this planet to achieve. And by the way, by monetize, it doesn't necessarily have to be like your time exchanged for a certain dollar amount. If it's doing charity work that really excites you and that really fulfills your purpose, obviously the money is not important but rather it's what you value. So it's – you just have to nail it down to that one thing that matters most.
Starting point is 00:15:58 Expect that nobody is going to help you along the way and the last part of the quote is be willing to work for everything. And I think Rob did a great job of talking about how to go about that. If you do number one, you know, the first two parts of this quote, if you focus on the fact that you're here for a reason, invest in yourself and expect nothing from the outside world, you're going to be prepared to do everything that you can to help fulfill that purpose and live in line with your purpose. Yeah. And two things that you just said, the monetize thing, Dean and I went to a sandwich shop yesterday that was so good that we went to it today. And when we left,
Starting point is 00:16:46 I, and the agua fresco is just like ridiculous. It was, it was awesome. Like these people, it's right down the street from my house and I never knew it was there. I actually wrote a Yelp review. So if you follow me on Yelp, then it's really,
Starting point is 00:16:55 it's really good. So as far as the monetizing part of it, um, this person, whoever, I don't know who the person is, but they opened the sandwich shop and they put time and money and effort to try to get the sandwich shop up. And I remember walking out of the sandwich shop and I went, I said it to Dean, I don't know if you heard it, but we were getting into the car and I said, man, that was so good.
Starting point is 00:17:23 was I wish that at this time, unbeknownst to me, the person that owned this sandwich shop was walking by me so that he could hear me say that because I know that my $9 for this sandwich means nothing to him compared to how much it would be for him to hear someone say, damn, that was such a good sandwich. That aquafresh was so good. Everything about that was so awesome because it makes him and all of the grinding and hard work
Starting point is 00:17:46 and everything that he has to put into it so much easier for him to hear that that sandwich was so good. So the monetizing isn't necessarily the big thing. Some people might just, like Dean said, get something out of charity work. And that was the second part of what I wanted to go over with what he said. We were also driving earlier today and there's a good amount of homeless people in Austin and I always feel for homeless people. Um, but I don't give them money and some of you out there might, and I commend you for it. And some of you guys might do something else for them, but, but what I started doing, and this is not me trying to sit on a high horse and brag about this, but it's, it's something that I wish other people would do as well is what I started doing was I started buying huge packets of, um, crackers and peanut butter, and then also buying huge packets of water
Starting point is 00:18:30 and then giving them to them as they're out there. And what's crazy about it is I have, I've done, I've given out quite a few in the past few months that I've been doing this and it makes me feel really good, but they also seem to really appreciate it. Like, like really, really appreciate it, which is an awesome thing to see, which means giving them money, I don't really want to do, but giving them food and water is something that I think is great to do because everybody needs food and everybody needs water. And I think that it's, the reason why I wanted to say it and put it on the podcast is because I would think it'd be great if people who listen to this podcast started doing the same
Starting point is 00:19:03 thing. people who listened to this podcast started doing the same thing. It cost me $8 for 45 packets of the crackers and peanut butter, and it cost me like $3 for like 24 packets of water. So it cost me $11, but brought some happiness and some sustenance to these people who needed it more than I do. And some of these people some of these people might have addiction, some of them might not have addiction. So giving them money is not necessarily the route I wanted to go. But I know that everyone needs food, and everyone needs water. It would be awesome. If people out who listen to this podcast, if you feel like it would be something that you would like to do, it would be awesome to hear your stories and to, you know, see other people do this as well. Yeah, no, it's great.
Starting point is 00:19:45 And the whole idea behind this podcast is really, I mean, not to, you know, steal the quote from Gandhi or whatever, but, you know, be the change that you want to see in the world and whatever changes you need to make in your world, try to be the solution or try to be the better version of those things that are going on in your world. So I think that wraps up for today. Any other thoughts that you want to add? No, I think it's great. I think that the summary of what I want to go over is that the quote is perfect
Starting point is 00:20:13 because invest in yourself, expect nothing from no one, and work for everything in order to fulfill your life purpose because you get one shot at being alive and at living and at trying to change this world. Um, and I think that the reason why Dean and I are so motivated to do this and to bring this podcast is to try to help people find their purpose. So when they die, they're like, man, I had a really great life. Cool, man. Well, hey, cheers. And thank you for a great episode. Motivation Nation, take care. Until next time. And so that is it.
