Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial, occasionally joined by my co-host Dean DeVries. And this is our podcast that comes out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We compress a massive life topic into about 10 to 20 minutes to help you take control of your life, become the best version of yourself, and follow your passion. Buckle up, because the best version of yourself, and follow your passion. Buckle up, because the podcast starts now. Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:36 My name is Rob Dial. This is episode four. I hope you're ready for a good episode. We are going to cover how to set goals. And if you're following along in our book, this is chapter four of our book. If you don't have the book yet and you want to download our free ebook, you can go to mwfmotivation.com and you can download it for free. So once again, mwfmotivation.com. For this episode and for this this chapter we'll go perfectly with it and the reason why is because we're gonna be doing some writing down of
Starting point is 00:01:09 goals and try to help you figure out exactly what your goals are so the thing about goals I don't want to say I'm perfect and I'm great at setting goals I just know that I've done it I've read a lot about it I've helped other people as well I hope to help you be able to set goals and accomplish goals. And one of the biggest things that I want you to take away from this is that writing your goals down is probably the biggest thing out of anything for setting goals. And the reason why is because a lot of people say they set goals, but really they just kind of make wishes in their mind. But I feel like something magical happens in your brain.
Starting point is 00:01:48 Some type of neurons connect or something like that whenever you write down and have pen to paper. And when you write down your goals, it becomes physical and it's an actual tangible thing that you can hold on to. And the good thing about it and the thing that I love about goals, when you write them down, you can put them everywhere, which we'll talk about visual cues in the next chapter. You know, taking your goals, writing them on your mirror, writing them everywhere you could possibly write them so you see them every single day and you're constantly reminded of them. So just kind of like the last episode, we're going to go over the same exact
Starting point is 00:02:24 things that we went over for the last episode, but this time we're actually going to go over the goals for the next six months or so. So the first thing that we're going to cover is the relationships. Ask yourself to help figure out what your goals are for the next six months in relationships would be, you know, what relationships in your life do you have that need more nurturing in the next six months? You know, who could you spend more time with in the next six months that's really going to develop a good relationship with you? When was the last time that you told someone that you, you know, that deeply matters to you how much you appreciate them you know who do you need to spend less time with that's another big thing you have to figure out your top four to five people the people that they really add the most value to your life and are on the same trajectory that you're going on or want to go on and surround yourself with the people who are you know on the same direction or will hold you to a
Starting point is 00:03:25 higher standard, which will in turn make you better. So, you know, your relationships, if you're driving along in your car, I'm sorry, this is another one of those episodes where it'd be really good if you can write some stuff down. If you have our book, you can fill out the book where there's actually some parts for you to fill out your goals. If you don't have our book and you just have a pen and paper and you want to write some stuff down, that's completely fine as well. So if you want to pause me, whatever you want to do, write down two to three goals on relationships for the next six months that you want to concentrate on. So an example would be, you know, I want to reach out to two people that I've lost touch with each week for the next six months, or, you know, something along those lines, or I want to spend, you know, more
Starting point is 00:04:12 time with my sister because I don't see her as much, or I want to take my sister out to lunch once a month so I can see her more often and develop that relationship, whatever it might be. So write down two to three goals for your relationships and how you want to foster your relationships and have them, you know, now that we looked in the past and saw the past six months and how your relationships went, what are you going to do and what are your goals for the next six months to develop better relationships? You know, I had you in the last episode, in the last chapter, I had you make yourself, you know, or rate yourself from 1 to 10. So if you didn't rate yourself a 10, which I hope that you didn't for anything because nobody's perfect for anything, what could you do to raise your level just a little bit from that scale of 1 to 10?
Starting point is 00:04:59 So that's the first thing is the relationships. The second thing is your goals for personal growth. Jim Rohn, who's one of my favorite, you know, self-help educational people out there, says that formal education makes you a living, you know, going to school, going to college, but self-education makes you a fortune. And like I said in the last episode where, you know, it's about 60 books a year the average Fortune 500 CEO reads. So how much are you reading? So questions you can ask yourself for your goals. How many books did you read the past six months? A quick example that I'll give you or a little bit
Starting point is 00:05:40 of a tidbit that'll help you out. If you don't read or you're just not really into reading at all, make it your mission to find a book that's rated really high on Amazon, that's something that you really like to do, you know, really like to learn or like to read about fiction, nonfiction, whatever it might be, and spend 15 minutes every single night before you go to bed reading the book. I don't know about you, but for me, whenever I read a book, I get super tired after and usually fall asleep. So it definitely helps you fall asleep as well. But you know, if you think about it, if you spend, you know, 15 minutes a night over a
Starting point is 00:06:17 week, that's off the top of my head, I think that's 105 minutes that you spend reading every single week. I think that's 105 minutes that you spend reading every single week. So, you know, personal growth. Like I said, how many books did you read in the past six months? You know, how many motivational podcasts did you listen to? How many new podcasts did you listen to that are, you know, have some of the people that are in? There's podcasts almost for any category you can think of.
Starting point is 00:06:47 So what's the thing that you want to learn most about? Maybe it's music. You know, have you listened to some of the people that are in, there's, there's podcasts almost for any category you can think of. So what's the thing that you want to learn most about? Maybe it's music. You know, have you been listening to some of the music podcasts, uh, motivational podcasts like us? Have you been to audible.com so you can listen to stuff in books as you're driving in your car? Um, you know, what's, you know, another question you ask yourself is, is how much time am I going to develop or put to developing and devoting to a new skill? You know, can I develop a new skill by devoting time twice a week, excuse me, twice a month, two weekends a month to developing whatever that skill is. So for your personal growth, on a piece of paper, write down, you know, two to three goals for personal growth. An example of that would be, I'll give up listening to the radio on the way to work and listen to podcasts on the way to work where I think I can learn more from them.
Starting point is 00:07:35 So if you need to pause me, pause me. Whatever you need to do, write down your goals. It's super important that you write down your goals. So write down your goals on personal growth, just two to three of them for the next six months. The next one that we're going to cover is spirituality. And like I said in the last episode, it doesn't matter if you're a religious person or you're not a religious person. Everyone has some type of spiritual aspect to them. So questions you can ask yourself, how often will you practice yoga in the next six months?
Starting point is 00:08:05 Or how often will you meditate in the next six months? A quick little tidbit on meditation. If you want to start meditating, it's very easy to do. Like I said, we're going to have a book and a podcast that's going to be coming out. Podcast episodes are going to be coming out on meditation. But just wake up 15 minutes earlier and go sit in a chair and just, you know, have your cup of coffee, whatever you need to do and spend 15 minutes, you know, even if even start at five or 10 minutes, if you're just new at it, and just say, Hey, you know what, I'm going to spend
Starting point is 00:08:35 the next seven days in a row, just sitting down quietly with my eyes closed, no distractions, nobody else up. And just be quiet and just be in the moment and be present. So, you know, how often will you practice yoga or meditate in the next six months? Do you plan on being more mindful and more kind to people? You know, is it your, you know, your spirituality, this works perfectly with, is it your goal to be, to be kinder to people? I know, uh, uh, one of my goals a few years ago was that I really wanted to, I don't want to say stop road rage. Cause that sounds like I was like driving people off the side of the road and slamming people. And, you know, uh, like I had a knife in my car or anything like that, but, but everybody
Starting point is 00:09:21 knows when somebody cuts you off or something, it's like, it's like, like Drake would say zero to a hundred real quick. Like I could be super calm. And then somebody cuts me off or Sims in the brakes. And I'm like, ah, this beep beep. Like I could just exploit, I exploit deleted everything I could possibly say. It was just, I would get so furious and go, you know, 100, zero to 100 real quick. And it was just this thing a few years ago, I was like, you know what, I'm going to try to practice being, you know, more mindful, more kind and in the moment. And, you know, when somebody cuts me off, I try to take a deep breath. And as, you know, one of my mentors, Hal Elrod would say, I can't change it. The person cut me off. I can't change it now. Why am I going to let somebody who's in front of me who I've probably
Starting point is 00:10:10 never met and probably never will meet my entire life affect my day and my drive as I'm going to work? Another thing that was real big for the can't change it that I learned from Hal is whenever you're stuck in traffic, I remember I heard this probably five or six years ago and I used to hate traffic. I still hate traffic to be honest with you. But you know, if you're late to something or if you're just sitting in your car and I live in Austin, Texas where there's a ton of traffic and anybody who's in traffic right now in Austin, Texas, I'm sorry. I know I understand exactly what you're going through. But if you're in traffic, there's nothing you can do to make that traffic go faster. You know, there's nothing you can do to get to your destination quicker if you're stuck in traffic and you're barely moving.
Starting point is 00:10:56 So you can either be really pissed off as you're sitting in traffic and furious and, you know, gripping your steering wheel and watch your knuckles turn white and everything. Or you can just take a deep breath and say, you know what? I can't change it. Because really, you can't. So you can't change it. Sit back, turn on some music that you like, turn on a podcast that you like, take a deep breath, enjoy your cup of coffee, and just get there when you get there. There's nothing that you can do. So you can't change it. Just be more mindful. So that would go with spirituality, I would say. Another question you could ask yourself with spirituality is,
Starting point is 00:11:32 how often are you going to pray? Are you going to start praying every single day like you want to? Are you going to practice words of gratitude every single day? Or write down affirmations every single day? So write down two to three goals on spirituality, anything religious, non-religious, praying, not praying, words of gratitude, being kind, whatever it might be. Write down two to three goals for spirituality into how you are going to become a better person in the next six months in that category. The next one is financial. And this is
Starting point is 00:12:08 usually the one where people are like, okay, yeah, no, I can write a lot of stuff about my financial goals. So we went over the past six months and how you've been doing the past six months in your financial. So if it's not where you want to be, or you want it to be better, which if you're listening to this podcast, there's probably a pretty good chance you want your finances to be better, which if you're listening to this podcast, there's probably a pretty good chance you want your finances to be better. So ask yourself questions to find out exactly what you want your finances to be. You know, how much money do you want to save in the next six months? You know, how much do you want to put towards your children's college fund in the next six months? You know, how much debt do you want to pay off for your student loans in the next six months? much debt do you want to pay off for your student loans in the next six months? You know, how much will you contribute to your retirement account? You know, so your financial goals. Finances is a
Starting point is 00:12:53 very big thing. Obviously, everybody wants to have their finances intact. So write down two to three goals for the next six months. Write them down. Something you can see. Something that's tangible in the world. You know, example of that of, you know, a goal for, something you can see, something that's tangible in the world. You know, example of that of, you know, a goal for that would be something like, you know, I will save at least 10% of my monthly income from each paycheck. And in the next six months, I'll have $4,000 saved. And, you know, that would be a good example of financial goals. And then the next one that we're going to cover is your career. So one quote I want to give you, which I love, and it was by Steve Jobs. And I believe he said this at a commencement speech. It was like back in 2004 or something like that. I believe
Starting point is 00:13:38 it was a Stanford commencement speech when everyone was graduating. And he said, your work is going to fill a large part of your life. And it's the only way to, and the only way to truly be satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to do what you love. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all things of the heart, you'll know when you find it. So with your career, you know, questions you can ask yourself with your career. How will you bring more passion into your career in the next six months is a good question. What will you do in the next six months to get yourself closer to a promotion?
Starting point is 00:14:18 How much better quality of work could you do in the next six months? In six months from now, how much better of a, you know, sales rep are you going to be from today? Six months from now, let's say you're a stay-at-home mom. How much better of a mom could you be in the next six months? What books could you read to be a better mom in the next six months to educate your children, to make them better people, to make them want to be more successful or be better people? Or, you know, what could you learn as a, you know, a stay at home mom that's going to make your children better? You know, could you teach them to paint? You know, there's a lot of stuff. Stay at home mom is a career. It's
Starting point is 00:14:53 a full time job plus like four extra jobs on top of it. So your career is a big thing. You know, what can you do in the next six months starting today that's going to help you succeed and become better? And, you know, so take time, pause me again, once again, if you need to write down two to three goals on your career. So an example could be something like, you know, if you want to start a side gig and start doing something that you're passionate about, you know, an example of your goal could be, you know, I will spend, you know, two weekends a month developing a side gig that I'm passionate about. So if you're, um, if you're passionate about painting, maybe you used to be a painter 20 years ago and it's something that you, that you just haven't even thought about in a long time, you just kind of gave it up. And, uh, it's one of those things where it's like, you feel like part of you is
Starting point is 00:15:42 missing. And, uh, and, and I've had this before where I, I didn't, you know, play guitar for five years and play music for five years. And I felt like after those five years, I felt like something was missing. Like if one of my arms just fell off or something. So maybe it's the same for you. And then once I started playing music and I was like, Oh my God, like this is, this is like part of me. This is like my arm. This is a literally part of my body. So it might be the same for you. Maybe you gave up painting a long time ago. Maybe you want to start painting and see if you can sell some of your products. And, uh, you know, there's a really cool app called Van Gogh, which if you have an iPhone, I don't, sadly enough, I have a Samsung, but my girlfriend showed me this app. It's called Van Gogh. We're just average artists. You know,
Starting point is 00:16:24 people who aren't big and established can put their art on there and people can buy it from them and commission them for it. So, you know, maybe if that's your goal, you can start painting a little bit more. Um, but a side note, uh, if you hate your job and it's not your passion, um, don't spend the rest of your life doing something that you hate. And it's the epitome of the rat race where it's just like people get so caught up and they have these blinders on where it's just like they need to make money. They have to make money. It's the number one driver in their life. And they don't live their life to their passion.
Starting point is 00:17:02 And I understand some people out there, you have bills to pay. You have kids and stuff like that. But let me ask you this, would you rather have your kids see a mother or father live a bland, unpassionate life doing something that they hate to do so that they are able to pay the bills? Or would you rather have your kids see a parent in front of them that loves what they do, that's passionate about life? And you have to realize if you spend a lot of time with what you're passionate about and do it, you're going to be happier in all areas of your life. So would you rather have the parent, would you rather be the parent or the spouse or the brother or sister,
Starting point is 00:17:40 mother, father, whatever it is that wakes up. You hate that you're about to go to your stupid job that you hate and you're just fed up with it and you go to work and you waste half of your waking hours on this planet typing on a computer and hitting buttons and all these things. And I'm not saying this to try to offend anybody. I'm just trying to make you understand what's going on. Would you rather spend the rest of your life just, you know, sitting in front of a computer hoping that one day you can retire and your kids see this person that hates their job and hates what they do and because of it, you're probably more grumpy when you come home? Or would you rather have your, you know, your children see a parent that loves life, that loves what they do, that's what they're
Starting point is 00:18:23 passionate about? You know, ask yourself this, would you rather have your children grow up and be super successful, but hate their job? Or would you rather have your children grow up and be happy? And if the answer is happy, and it's probably, you know, they learn from you. So if they see you going out, and you're happy with your life and you're passionate about what you know, they learn from you. So if they see you going out and you're happy with your life and your passion about what you do, they're probably going to do the same thing, you know, so they will act as if. So that was just a side note, rambled on a little bit about that, but your career, write down two to three goals on your career, something that you want to do in the next six months. And the last one is physical. Physical is usually very easy for people as well.
Starting point is 00:19:06 You know, what new personal records will you accomplish? You know, how much weight will you lose in the next six months? One tip I'll give you on weight loss is people get very caught up in diets and fads and all of these different types of things, don't think of it as a life or assuming don't think of it as a diet. Think of it as a lifestyle. You can't just change what you eat for a month or two and expect that you're just going to lose 30 pounds and it's going to stay off forever. It needs to be your new lifestyle. And if your goal is to lose 30 pounds in the next six months, let's say that's what it is. Break your goal down into smaller goals. So for instance, say your goal is to lose 30 pounds. Well, then make it your goal to lose one pound this week or two pounds this week.
Starting point is 00:19:54 Because once you hit that small goal, you're like, well, man, I lost two pounds this week. Maybe I could lose three pounds next week. I lost two pounds this week. Maybe I could lose 10 pounds next month. So start with small goals and pounds this week. Maybe I could lose 10 pounds next month. So start with small goals and slowly make them bigger and bigger and start pushing yourself because once you hit that goal, well, then it's easier to go, you know what? I'm going to think bigger. So that's a big thing with physical. You know, what will you do in the next six months to, you know, eat better? You know, will you cut out fast food?
Starting point is 00:20:24 What other healthier choices will you make? Will you start making smoothies or juicing or whatever it might be? So write down two to three goals on your physical fitness and your health, stuff that you want to accomplish in the next six months. You know, example would be, I want to run my first 5k six months from now. And then you take, you know, the next six months training, even if you're not a runner at all, and just start training, start moving a little bit, start getting out. Maybe your goal is just to get out of the house and walk around your neighborhood for 30 minutes. That is still an awesome goal because a lot of people still don't do that. And if you take 30
Starting point is 00:20:57 minutes of walking around and you multiply that by seven, seven days in a week, that's 210 minutes of walking around. That's three and a half hours. Excuse me. Yeah, two and a half hours. Is that right? Yeah, something like that. Sorry. Three and a half hours, something like that, of walking around. Almost four hours of walking around each week. That was my math trying to go off in my head. I had to try to figure it out. So even if it's just moving a little bit, that's fine. And maybe it's one of your goals is to every 30 or 45 minutes, stand up from your desk and do a quick stretch or walk to the bathroom or walk to the water
Starting point is 00:21:36 fountain to make sure that you drink more water because most people don't drink enough water as well. So write down two to three goals for your physical fitness and your health and your nutrition and how you're going to get better in the next six months for that. So write down two to three goals for your physical fitness and your health and your nutrition and how you're going to get better in the next six months for that. So to wrap up this episode, if nothing else from this episode, you'll notice that I said, write down your goals, write down two or three goals, write down your goals. The number one thing I want you to take from this episode today for the rest of the day, for the rest of your life, is to write down your goals. There's been studies that show that the most successful people in life write
Starting point is 00:22:09 down their goals. And when you write down a goal, you are, I think, 10 times more likely to accomplish that goal than if you were to just, you know, say that, oh, I want to do this and put out into the world as just a wish. So the first thing, write down your goals. That's the biggest thing I want you to take from this episode. And the second thing, as always, everybody, make it your mission today to make someone else's day better. And I hope you have an amazing day. Have a good one. And so that is it.
