Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial.
Starting point is 00:01:07 I am occasionally joined by my co-host, Dean DeVries. And growing up, our moms always told us that we had the perfect faces for radio. So here we are with our own podcast that comes out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And we compress a massive life topic into about 10 to 20 minutes to help you take control of your life and mind, become the best version of yourself, and follow your passion. Buckle up because the podcast starts now. Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast. My name is Rob Dial, and this is episode five,
Starting point is 00:01:56 which if you are following along in our free ebook, it is chapter five. And if you don't have our ebook, it is a very good time to go back and get it. It is at mwfmotivation.com. And the title is Hack Your Goals, The Step-by-Step Process to Achieving Success. Now, once again, you can get at mwfmotivation.com. But what we're going to do in this chapter, also this episode, is we're going to develop a clear vision for what you want for your future. I'm going to develop a clear vision for what you want for your future. I'm going to develop a clear vision for my future.
Starting point is 00:02:28 You're going to develop a clear vision for yours. And I'm going to kind of show some of my goals and then give some examples of other goals as well. And what we're going to do is we're going to determine your why and determine, you know, your mission statement. We're going to determine your why, develop the mission statement, and figure out exactly what course you want your life to take. So, what is your why? Your why is going to determine your conviction and your goals. So, we all know that whenever you're trying to go for any type of goal, no matter how big, no matter how small,
Starting point is 00:03:01 but especially the big ones, there's going to be some challenges. There are going to be some times where you're going to fall down and need to get back up. And the thing about it is, is if your why is strong enough, then you will know whenever these challenges do come, because you're going to need to expect them, that you're going to be able to overcome them because that why is so strong. And I used to have a mentor named John Berghoff, and he used to say, when your why is strong enough, your how will reveal itself. So once again, when your why is strong enough, your how will reveal itself. And what that means is, you know, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds in the next few weeks, you know, your goal is to lose 10 pounds, you next few weeks. You know, your goal is to lose 10 pounds.
Starting point is 00:03:45 You need to develop your why. What is the reason? Not just, you know, I want to look better, but it's got to be like a deep, detailed, what is the reason why you want to lose 10 pounds? You know, because you've never looked that good before or because you want to get back to your high school weight or whatever it might be.
Starting point is 00:04:02 You need to find out exactly what your why is because when you know deep to your core what your why is because when you know deep to your core that your why means that much to you, then your how will reveal itself. So once you know exactly the reason why you want to lose those 10 pounds, you will develop and figure out how once you know that why. So, you know, it keeps you going when things get really tough. And, you know, you guys ever see someone who, you know, they're super successful now or they're doing amazing things with their life, but they came from like horrible, horrible situations. You're like, man, how did that person get to where they are? Like, I need to know their story. You know, how did they go from,
Starting point is 00:04:38 you know, homeless to, you know, multimillionaire and successful and running great businesses or something like that? Like the example that I always think about is, you know, Will Smith and the pursuit of happiness. And the reason why that was such an incredible story was because he went from literally homeless, sleeping inside of a, you know, a bathroom with the sun inside of a train station to, you know, working as a stockbroker, I think it was, and making millions of dollars. Now, the thing about that is you have to realize for him to go from that horrible condition all the way to where he was, he must have had a why that was so deep, that he knew so deep to his core that was like his reason for living that nothing could stop him. And that's what you need
Starting point is 00:05:24 to figure out. You know, his why was probably something along the lines of he had this son that he had to take care of and he would not stop at anything to make sure that his son would have a better life than he did. So we're going to do two different exercises in this episode. And if you have a pen and paper, please take out your pen and paper. It is definitely another writing episode. And if you have a pen and paper, please take out your pen and paper. It is definitely another writing episode. If you have our ebook, once again, at mwfmotivation.com,
Starting point is 00:05:52 there is blank spaces and stuff where you place places where you want to write. And what we're going to do first is we're going to find out what is going to happen if you don't hit your goals. What does your life look like if you don't hit these goals that you're setting out for yourself? So this is very, very important because you don't want to just think about how great your life could be because that may be motivating to you, but you also want to think about how bad your life could be if you don't hit these goals. What does your life look like if you don't hit these goals? Because some people are motivated by pleasure. A lot of people are motivated by getting away from pain. So if you develop that pain of, you know, this is exactly what my life is going to look like and I don't want my life to look like this, then it's going
Starting point is 00:06:38 to be much easier for you to go, you know what, there's no way I'm going to, you know, lay back and have the life that it looks like if I don't achieve my goals. So some of the questions you want to ask yourself, and once again, as I've said in the past chapters, in the past episodes, if you for any reason need to pause me, pause me. I'm completely cool with it because you need to write down some stuff and be very detailed in everything that you say. So questions I want you to ask yourself. The first one is what pain will I endure if I don't grow myself enough to hit my goals? So once again, that question, what pain will I endure if I don't grow myself to hit those goals? You know, what type of person am I going to be if I don't hit my goals? You know, how happy am I going to be with myself if I, you know, just live a mediocre life? You know, another really good question is if I don't hit my goal of blank, what will I miss out on?
Starting point is 00:07:37 You know, so I'll give you examples for me as we're going through this, and then I'll also give you other examples as well. So my goal, and I've said it, you said it multiple times, is to be a working musician. And as everybody knows, that's one of the hardest jobs possible because you're under constant scrutiny. There's tons of competition and the chances of making it are super, super slim. So for an example, if I'm asking myself these questions, what pain will I endure if I don't grow myself enough to hit my goals? What pain will I endure if I don't grow myself and get better enough of a musician in order to become a working musician? What pain will I endure? Well, I'll get to the end of my life and go, damn, I wish I could have become a musician. I lived 70, 80, 90 years and wasted it because I was too worried
Starting point is 00:08:26 about what other people would think about me versus going out and saying, you know what, screw it. I don't care what people think about me. I want to do this. This is my dream. You know, whether anybody thinks I'm good or nobody thinks I'm good, just putting music out makes me feel better. You know, what will I miss out on is another one of the questions. What will I miss out on? I will miss out on, you know, possibly the happiest life I could possibly have. If music is what makes me happy and making music is what makes me happy, then I'm going to miss out on a completely fulfilled and joyful life and a much better life than I could have been, could have had if I didn't pursue my goals. You know, another question that you need to ask
Starting point is 00:09:05 yourself is what challenges will I endure or encounter on my journey to hitting my goals? What challenges will I encounter on the way to hitting my goals? So, you know, for me is, you know, the musician example, what challenges will I encounter? Oh man, I'll probably encounter people saying that I suck, that people say that I'm horrible. I hope it never happens, but possibly getting booed off of stages, getting stuff thrown at me. That's what challenges I could come across
Starting point is 00:09:38 in my journey to becoming there. But that's the type of stuff that could happen to me and I need to develop a why that is so strong that when I do get booed off of a stage, or people do say that I suck, or that my lyrics are horrible, that my voice is horrible, that when I do encounter those challenges, they're just another stepping stone. It's not a big deal. It's just a speed bump. So that's an example. Let's say, for instance, your example is you want to become physically fit. What will you miss out on if you don't become physically
Starting point is 00:10:10 fit? And it needs to get more detailed than just physically fit. It needs to be X amount of pounds, what you want to look like, but what will I miss out on? You'll miss out on having the self-confidence that you really could have. What challenges will you encounter? Well, you'll encounter food challenges where you want to eat. If you're like me, you want to eat a bunch of sugar and candy and, you know, just sit there and stare at the ceiling as you're eating Skittles. That's what you'll encounter. That's what I would encounter in trying to become physically fit. And it's something that I have encountered on, you know, my five, six, seven years that I've been trying to personally be physically fit.
Starting point is 00:10:49 And although I still do have cheat days, I wish I could eat candy every single day, but I don't. So if your example is to be physically fit, food challenges, motivational challenges, you don't want to get up and go to the gym sometimes. Getting there is the hardest part. So whatever it is, you need to write down, you know, what type of stuff you're going to encounter and, you know, what will your life be like if you don't hit your goals? What will your life be like if, you know, you might have a great life now, but you might not be a hundred percent fulfilled. What will it be like? Think of this, you know, what will it be like if you get to your deathbed and you're looking back and you're like, you know, you have two options either. Number one, you're like, man, that was an incredible life. I did everything that I wanted. That was amazing.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I could not have lived a better life. Or number two, you go, man, there's a lot of regrets that I have. I wish I would have done this better. I wish I would have gone for my goals for this. I wish I would have done this. So write down what stuff you're going to encounter, what you're going to miss out on, and what your life will be like if you don't go for the goals that we wrote down in the previous episodes and previous chapters. So write in as much detail as you possibly can. I will be here waiting for you when you unpause me, but please write some stuff down. Go in as much detail as you possibly can. Now that you're back, hopefully, because you did pause me, this exercise, it can be really scary because what you're doing is you're literally looking at a life unlived to its fullest potential, but the scariest part about it is that you're looking at your life
Starting point is 00:12:26 unlived to your fullest potential. So you need to do this stuff to realize what your life would be like if you didn't become the best version of yourself and hit all of the goals that you have. But you need to clearly identify what you do not want so you can find out exactly what you do want. so you can find out exactly what you do want. And so that's the first part of this chapter and episode. The second thing is you need to, in as much detail, we're going to keep on writing, you know, what pleasure, ask yourself these questions, what pleasure will it give me to hit my goal of blank? You know, for me, let's say, you know, as a musician, what pleasure will it give me to hit my goal of becoming a working musician? Well, it'd be living, which is finding out what you're passionate about and living every single day doing that passion. And the problem
Starting point is 00:13:33 is it seems like society and the reason why they call it the rat race is because, you know, that's what society is. You wake up, you go to your job, which, you know, some people out there might enjoy, but statistically, you know, I think it's like 75% of people don't enjoy their job. So that means 75% of people, three out of four people don't enjoy their job. So three out of four people are wasting half of their living hours that they're awake, you know, doing something they don't enjoy. That's not how life should be. Life should be doing what you're passionate about and being happy every single day to do what you're doing. So what pleasure will it give me to hit my goal
Starting point is 00:14:09 of becoming a musician? That would be it. It would be living to my passion, being happy. That's what pleasure it will give me. Another question you want to ask yourself and write down is how much better will my life be if I hit my goal? and write down is how much better will my life be if I hit my goal? You know, how much better will your life be if you hit your goal of blank? Another question you ask yourself is how much happier will I be? How much happier will I be if I become a, you know, a working musician? I'm happy. I'm a really happy person, but I would be even happier just to be a person who only plays music and gets paid to do something that you're in love with.
Starting point is 00:14:47 So some people out there might be artists. You know, there's a lot of ways you can now make money with your art online. You can sell it on Etsy. There's a really cool app that's for iPhone called Van Gogh, where working artists can put their stuff on there and people can go scroll through all of their stuff and buy them from it directly or, you know, commission them. So, you know, that's an easy way for you to make some money on the side until you, you know, really start your art business if that's what you're passionate about.
Starting point is 00:15:13 You know, and then another question that's good to ask yourself is what good can come from me hitting my goal of blank? You know, so what good can come from me hitting my goal of blank? Maybe your goal is to start a charity and eventually be able to just pay a basic salary to just yourself from the stuff that's donated, but be able to do a lot of good. So what good can come from hitting your goal of starting your own charity?
Starting point is 00:15:39 Well, number one, you could make the money to get your basic needs, which obviously is everybody in a charity needs to have, but how much good can come from it? Well, tons of good could come from your charity. People could be fed or people could be housed, whatever it might be. So you need to, in as much detail, write down how great your life will be if you hit your goals. So it's very, very important you do these two things. The first thing is you write down all of the horrible stuff that could happen and all of the negative stuff that could happen if you don't hit your goal. So you see what your life could be like if you don't
Starting point is 00:16:16 hit your goal. It could, I mean, it doesn't even, it's probably not even horrible if you don't hit your goal. It's just mediocre. You know, your life is mediocre, which is a pretty horrible thing if you think about it. So that's the first thing. And the second thing is to write down how great your life could be. What does your life look like? You know, how amazing is your life when you hit your goal? You know, if you're money motivated, you know, if your goal is to make $100,000 this year, you know, how much better could your life be with a hundred thousand dollars? And not just the stuff that you buy from it, because that's not going to be your why, but what good can come from you having a hundred thousand dollars? Can you support your family now? Could you give some extra money
Starting point is 00:16:57 to your mom and take care of her? You know what you need to develop the why. So, you know, exactly to your core, whenever you get kicked in the face and stuff goes bad that you're going to be able to keep going. So behind every success story, you have to realize there is a very, very strong why because success is 99% failure. And that's a big thing. Success is 99% failure. So when there is that failure, their why is what pulls them through that. So your why should excite you. It should motivate you.
Starting point is 00:17:29 It should get you up in the morning to take action. And a great question to ask yourself is now that you know your goals, now that we spent a few chapters figuring out what your goals are, developing your goals, developing your why, a really good question to always ask yourself whenever you're doing anything is this, is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further
Starting point is 00:17:55 from my goal of blank? So I'll repeat it. Is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goal of blank? So, you know, let's say your goal is to, you know, lose 10 pounds. Let's just make that. That's easy. If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goal of losing 10 pounds? You know, if you're driving to the gym, is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goals of losing 10 pounds? If you're driving to the gym, that answer is yes. Continue to do it. If you ever have the answer no, you should immediately stop what you're doing and make sure that you change to hitting your goal. So for instance, let's say it's 10 pounds. Is what I'm doing right now, eating this donut, getting me closer to or further from my goal
Starting point is 00:18:48 of losing 10 pounds? That is getting you further away from hitting your goal of 10 pounds. Guess what? Don't do it. Stop doing it. Put it down. Go eat something healthy. You know, is what I'm doing right now, sitting on the couch and watching, you know, reruns
Starting point is 00:19:04 of Friends from 14 years ago, getting me closer to or further from my goal of losing 10 pounds. Well, that would be getting you further from your goal. So guess what? Get your happy butt off of the couch. Stop watching Friends. It'll be there for you. You can DVR it if you want, I'm sure. And head to the gym. Do something. Go for a walk. If you have a dog, take your dog out for a walk. You know, if you have a dog, take your dog out for a walk, take him for a jog. You know, always ask yourself is what I'm doing right now getting me closer to or further from my goal of blank. So we, Dean and I, we actually had a client not too long ago. And we had to do this with her. We had to develop a why we had to figure
Starting point is 00:19:42 out what her goals were. And one of her goals was actually to lose 10 pounds in five weeks. And she had a really deep why. Her goal, you know, bikini season was coming, was that she wanted to look better than she ever had in a bikini. You know, she had never really felt confident in a bikini. And she lived in Florida, which, I mean, we're from Florida and there's, you know, bikini seasons like nine to 10 months out of the entire year. Right. But real bikini season, I guess is somewhere around the, you know, April, May, somewhere around that where it really starts to get hot and you know, the water starts to warm up, but she wanted to lose 10 pounds in five weeks and she developed her why and her why, like I said, was she never felt confident. She was always self-conscious when she was inside of a bikini and she always felt bad about it in 20 some odd
Starting point is 00:20:29 years of being on the planet. So her why was she wanted to feel good and feel self-confident about herself. And her main action of this entire thing was to go to the gym five days a week. She wanted to go five days a week and that was her main thing because she wasn't going to the gym at all. She would go to the gym like once or twice a month. That was basically it. But the thing about her was two days into her journey, she actually got into a car accident, which obviously doesn't help. Now, everything is okay with her. She wasn't injured in any way, but her car was quite destroyed. It wasn't total, but there was a whole lot of problems that happened with her car. So the problem with this is that she lived about two miles away from the gym and she was driving to the gym every single day or five days a week to hit her goal. Now, obviously getting into a car accident is going to completely sway you from your
Starting point is 00:21:21 goals and it's going to mix you up mentally and all this stuff. But her why was so strong that she was like, you know what? Screw it. I'm going to still figure out a way to get to the gym. And she lived about two miles from the gym. So she ran to the gym and from the gym home every single day that she went to the gym. Those five days a week, she ran the entire way, which was an extra workout on top of the workout she already had. You know, so most people could take that situation and say, man, my car's, uh, I can't do it. You know, I'm gonna have to wait these, it took 10 days for her car to get fixed. You know, I'm going to take these 10 days and I'm just going to, you know, put my goal on hold, right? No, that wasn't it. Her why was so strong and she was so deep to her core that she was like, screw it. Nothing is going to stop me from losing these 10 pounds in five weeks. And so that's why you want to develop a why
Starting point is 00:22:09 that is very, very strong. So write down your goals. You already have your goals, but what you want to do now is write down your why. If you're following along in our ebook, Hack Your Goals, the step-by-step guide to achieving success, you'll see that on the page there, there's a whole area to write down your why. So you need to figure out your why. So question, what is your why? So every time you find out your goal, my goal is blank. Well, then you need to figure out exactly what your why is. Why is that your goal? Why? And it doesn't need to be superficial like, oh, you know, I want to lose 10 pounds. So I look better. You know, it could be like I told you self-confidence. It's gotta be something that gets you up and motivated when you get kicked in the face. Cause we all know
Starting point is 00:22:52 that on the way to your goals, you're going to get kicked in the face. And the good thing about it is don't just write down words, cut out pictures, make it visual. You know, if you have like a, you know, on, on YouTube, you can take, if you have videos of stuff that you like that motivate you and get you excited, you know, make a new folder of favorites and put all of it in there. And, you know, you have your words, you have your pictures, you have your videos, you have your goals, write them down everywhere. You need to have stuff that's visual, visual cues to see these. Visual cues are very, very big with this. You need to have them everywhere. If your goal is to look like, you know, X person, if you're trying to lose 10 pounds, well then put pictures of that person
Starting point is 00:23:33 everywhere. And people might think it's creepy that come over your house, but who gives a crap? Honestly, who gives a crap? You know, let's say that your goal is to look like some fitness person or some model or, you know or bikini person or some Arnold Schwarzenegger or something like that. Who knows what it is? If you don't want everyone to see it, put pictures all in your closet. Put pictures in your bathroom. Put pictures where you see them all the time.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Put pictures on the back of your cell phone or your background on your cell phone and your lock screen. Put them everywhere. You need visual cues. You need to see these things that motivate you to go, you know what? That is my goal. I'm going to stop at nothing to hit that goal. This is what you need to do. So it'll really help you out. I promise you if you get the visual cues. Get as specific as you can with your goals. Get as specific as you can with your why and then put the visual cues everywhere.
Starting point is 00:24:25 with your why, and then put the visual cues everywhere. So to wrap up this episode, the two takeaways, number one, develop a why. Find out your why. If your why is strong enough, your how will reveal itself. What is your why? You know, what is the reason why this is your goal? How are you going to feel when you hit your goal? So the first thing, develop your why. And the second thing, the second takeaway for you guys, as the same for every single episode, make it your mission today to make somebody else's day better.
