And if you're out there and you love this podcast, please give us a rating and review
however you listen to us. That way, they will actually show this podcast to more people
who have never listened to it before and more people's lives can be impacted and this podcast
can grow. Today, we're going to be talking about why you should fuck everything up and figure it
out as much as you possibly can. Now, you might be sitting there like, whoa, it's an aggressive
start. It is an aggressive start. But one of the things that I noticed that holds people back the
most is they try not to make mistakes, which is extremely dumb.
And the reason why is because of this.
Not wanting to screw something up is wild because anytime you do anything, I don't know
about you guys, I screw almost everything up and I try to screw up as quickly as possible
because if I can screw something up, I can usually make adjustments from there and figure
out how to
improve upon it. If you've been listening to this podcast long enough, one of the ways that I live
my life, I run my business, I do everything that I do is ready, fire, aim. And you might say,
hold on, you said it incorrectly. It's supposed to be ready, aim, fire. No, I do ready, fire,
aim, which means I figure out what I want. I make a real quick plan around it. I start working at it. I mess as much as I possibly can. And then I re-aim. It's like if somebody was breaking into your house
and you were trying to shoot at them, you're not going to be like, well, let me get the perfect
shot. You're just going to freaking go at it, right? Because it's for your own protection.
And so the way I see it in ready, fire, aim is like, I'm getting ready. I'm firing. I'm taking
action. I'm messing up a whole bunch of things., I'm getting ready. I'm firing. I'm taking action. I'm messing
up a whole bunch of things. I'm missing the target. I'm missing the target. Then I'm aiming.
And that's the way that if I could help everybody start to do those types of things, where it's just
like take massive action and screw everything up, so many more people would get to success quicker
because everyone's trying not to screw something up. Or they say, hey, I'm a perfectionist
or they don't want to mess up
because they don't want to put something out
that's imperfect and then get judged by others
because of it.
And I think that it's one of the worst things
that you can do.
And I'll tell you a little life story
just to kind of bring this all in.
And I'll tell you how this actually
neurologically changes your brain when you do this. So if you've been listening to me for a while, you probably know I'm in the middle
of getting my pilot's license. I went from doing VFR training to IFR training. And it's different
certifications so I can fly at night. I can fly through clouds and all of these things. It's a
long, tedious process. There's a lot that goes into it, right? And not long ago, my instructor
was with me and he's a really good instructor. He was, you know, he just retired from UPS
a year ago. He flew with them for 32 years. He's got like 40,000 hours behind a plane, right?
And I'm good at landings. Like I'm really good at landings. I've done hundreds of them now.
But when I was first starting them, I was not that good at them.
It was, I'd screwed up and I'd screwed up and I'd screwed up. And not too long ago,
even though I've done a couple hundred landings, we were flying to a new airport.
And for those of you guys that have never flown a plane before, based on the size of the runway,
the length of the runway and the width of the runway, a runway can look either a lot closer than it is
or a lot further away than it is. So like for instance, one of the airports that we fly to
and do practice at, it's a 7,000 foot runway, so it's big and it's a hundred feet wide.
So there's another one that we fly to, which is 3,500 feet wide. It's 3,500 feet long,
so it's half the length. And it's instead of of 100 feet wide, it's only 34 feet wide.
And so your depth perception, that runway that's smaller and skinnier looks farther away
at 1,000 feet than the one that is twice the size of it at 1,000 feet. And so we were flying into
the small airport. And the thing that made this airport really tricky was it's built on a hill. And so not only is it, it's not flat. So instead of landing
flat, we're actually landing going up a hill. And doing this, I ended up screwing up part of the
landing. It was nothing catastrophic, none of that type of stuff, but I screwed up the landing.
And we had to go back around and it's called reenter the pattern. So we actually had to
go do it, you know, basically like a racetrack, like a NASCAR racetrack around, and then go back
and land at the airport, the exact same direction that we were trying to land before. And so what
happens was we go down and because of my depth perception, the fact that it was not flat,
we kind of bounced off of the runway. And then we were kind of like, we literally went down,
hit the runway, like not hit. That of humped. Like we literally went down,
hit the runway, like not hit. That's probably not the best word. The wheels touched down to the runway. And then we took back off and we were probably 15 feet above the air.
And so I just put the throttle forward. We went back around all this stuff, right?
It was, it was, and I was like, damn, I thought I was past this. Like, I felt like I thought I,
I thought I was mastering runways and we get done and we put the plane away and all this stuff. And he goes, man,
that was a perfect, he was like excited. He's like, that was a perfect lesson.
And I was like, yeah, I guess. And, um, he's like, no, no, no, don't let it hurt your ego.
And I was like, no, it doesn't hurt my ego. It's all good. Um, it's just, you know, like
shit, I thought I had it. And then I realized that I don't have it.
And he goes, no, no, no, you have to screw these things up. So you know what to do when I'm not
around. Like that was perfect. Cause if you had never done that before, and then this happens to
you when I'm not around, it's a lot scarier. Now, you know, next time you're in the exact same
situation, number one, if you're going up a hill, how to do it. If you're, you know, you end up
having a little bit of a bounce, how to go around and do all this stuff. And since we started training together,
we've been talking about this idea of fuck it up and figure it out. And in this process,
everything with flying the plane has been that way. It's been fuck it up and figure it out,
fuck it up and figure it out. You know, he's an instructor. He's there and he's like,
I'll be here for anything that's in case anything catastrophic happens, but you've got to fly and you've got to mess up yourself so
that you know what to do and what not to do. And so it's a really good lesson of exactly how life
is as well. Like, do I want to go in and have every single flight go perfectly? Yeah, it would
make me a little bit less anxious. That would be good, right? Does it always happen that way? No. Do we all want life to go perfectly? Of course. Do we want
to just master something immediately? Hell yeah, we do. But is that how life works? No, most of the
time it doesn't. And so we've got to be okay with fucking it up and then figuring it out,
messing everything up and then going, whoops, I didn't do it right. How do I do it right this time?
it out, messing everything up and then going, whoops, I didn't do it right. How do I do it right this time? And so the thing about it is it's the exact same way where you're going through and
trying to fly this plane. Every time I fly and go out and stuff, I'm like, man, there's so many
perfect analogies for life. And it's really cool because I haven't really done something that's
been as humbling as this has been, you know, now that I'm 36 years old and it's, and I haven't done something that is just challenging and starting. It's funny because
after I get done flying and I'm driving home, I don't listen to any music ever because my brain,
I can just feel it. Like I literally, I've never felt like my brain actually starting to repattern
itself. And it's like, my brain doesn't want to listen to music. It doesn't want to listen to
podcasts. It's like, Hey, it's gotta be silent because there's a lot of things that just happen.
And we just need some time to move some of these, these, these neurosynaptic connections around.
And it's a perfect example because that's exactly how life is as well, is you've got to go through
and you've got to screw those things up. You've got to mess the things up. You've got to go through
and not be perfect. It's the same way. And it's okay to go through
these things. I'm actually going to tell you in a second how your brain changes when you do mess up
and how it is really, really, really, really, really good for when you're trying to change
your brain to mess things up. Hey, can we talk about notifications for a second? Who actually
leaves these sounds on anymore? Well, besides that kind, that's another sale on Shopify,

certified to go scuba diving, you know, it, they put you through the ringer. Like they do anything
that could possibly go wrong. They put you through it and screw it all up so that when it does
happen, you know exactly how to go through it. So it's like, you know, part of the scuba certification
is you got to go under the water. You've got to take your mask off. You've got to swim like a
hundred yards with your mask off. Then you've got to put your mask back on.
You've got to blow through your nose, clear it so that it, all of the water gets out and it's
just full of air now. And then that's part of the thing that, you know, now you're good. You've
passed that part of the test. There's another one where you have to literally take all of your gear
off and then you have to put it back on after it's completely off of your body. And so it's
like anything that could happen. There's one that's going to scare the shit out of some of
you guys, where they literally have you look at your gauge to show how much oxygen is in it.
And as you're looking at it and breathing, they literally close your oxygen so that you can look
at your oxygen, go from full to nothing coming through to your mouth. And you see it go there
and you realize there's
nothing coming out and then they'll turn it back on. So they put you through everything. And it's
all of the mistakes that could possibly go wrong. They put you through so that whenever those things
pop up, you know exactly how to do it and it becomes easier for you. And so that's how life
is. Life is the same as the way it is with flying a plane, with scuba diving, all of those things is
you have to mess up. And it's actually super important to mess up. When you mess something
up, an error, when you create an error in some sort of way, your brain actually learns faster
when you do something wrong than when you immediately do it right. Let me tell you why
this is. Because when you create an error in something, anything that you're doing and trying
to work on, your brain will actually send epinephrine, which is adrenaline
in your brain. It will send epinephrine to your brain, telling your brain to focus even more
the next time around. Isn't that crazy? You mess something up, your brain is patterned so that
epinephrine goes into
your brain so that you can focus even better the next time after you screw something up.
And if you think about it, in my head, this makes sense for survival. Because let's say that we're
hunting and we are hunting, you know, it's been a hard week. The tribe, we haven't hunted and
eaten anything in two days. We're hungry, right? And we're tracking
something. We're tracking this animal for three hours. And we find the animal. We finally see the
animal. We've been tracking its little tracks in the dirt and everything. We finally see it.
And you're like, I'm going to take my bow and arrow. I'm going to shoot it. And you take the
bow and arrow, you pull it back and you let it go and you miss. It's a really important
time right now. You just missed. You've been tracking for three hours. The whole tribe hasn't
eaten in two days. The next shot needs to be on point. So your brain takes epinephrine, adrenaline,
sends it through your body and your brain to say, you better freaking focus right now.
And so what do you do? You get that
epinephrine, you take another shot, and hopefully that hits it. So you need the epinephrine and the
adrenaline to go through your body and your brain so that you can focus even more. So that, you know,
after I screw up the plane coming down and, you know, bouncing off the ground, the wheels hit,
we pop right back up again.
Immediately, my brain's like, and it wasn't like I noticed it. I was like, oh shit. I felt all there was, I wasn't thinking about like, what do I have to do later? Right? It was like
every ounce of like my focus went to, you better fly this fucking plane. Don't let this thing
crash. So it was like highly, highly, like, I don't want to
say agitated. It felt a little bit agitated, but it was like everything that I had went into focusing
at this very moment to make sure that we were going to land it safely. And we went around and
I put as much focus. And so it's the focus to make sure that we're coming in at the right angle,
to make sure that we're coming in at the right angle, to make sure that we're coming in at the right speed, to make sure that I take the throttle back when I need to.
And all of these things are as perfect as possible.
And by screwing up the first landing,
the second landing became so much better
because all of my focus,
I wasn't thinking about anything else in this entire world
except for that.
And so you have to realize
if you're trying to live your life without making mistakes,
if you're trying to wait till the perfect time, if you're trying to wait until you become
better, if you're just waiting and waiting and waiting and putting it off or you're a
quote unquote perfectionist or you're procrastinating or any of those things, you're actually holding
yourself back because the one thing that you need to do is go screw up as much as you possibly
can.
You need to screw up.
Your brain wants you to screw up.
The universe wants you to screw up so that you can figure out what not to do and then figure out exactly what to do.
That's the secret of life.
But how many people out there, I've done this before, how many people listening right now
are not starting the thing that you really want to start because you're afraid of not taking the right action. You're afraid that you're going to mess
up. You're afraid that maybe if you mess up and let's say you create an Instagram reel and
you put it up there and then some people judge you for it. And that's what you're worried about.
You're worried about those things, the judgment, the screwing up, all of this, not doing it right,
not being the right time. Maybe I'll do it later.
All of those things are what you're worried about and the reason why you're not taking action now.
But in reality, the best thing that you could do is take action, screw everything up.
You know, the one thing that I always say that I think is really important, especially here,
is incorrect action is better than no action. Like completely screwing something up is better than waiting and not taking action.
Because at least that person is taking action,
finding out what doesn't work.
And if you take enough action
to find out what doesn't work,
eventually you will get to the point
where you find out what does work
on the thing that you're working towards.
And you will be so much further along
than the person who's just sitting in the background,
waiting for the perfect time, waiting until they learn more, waiting until they get better,
all of that stuff. You're going to be so much better if you go out and take imperfect action because eventually what's going to happen is you will figure out what the correct action is to take
which means you will be light years ahead of the people who are not taking any action. So if you're out there not taking action because you don't want to mess things up,
fuck it up and figure it out. Write it down, pen and piece of paper, mess up as much as you
possibly can because when you mess things up, you will eventually figure out what works.
My favorite quote that goes along with this is a creator of Honda. He says,
success is 99% failure. So out of every 100 tries,
you just need to succeed one time. Success is 99% failure. Go out there, fuck it up,
and then figure it out. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love this episode,
