Welcome to the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I am your host, Rob Dial. And if you have not yet
done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another episode. Today is Thursday,
so that means that it is the business edition of the Mindset Mentor, which also means that
I am joined by my best friend of 14 years and my business partner for many business
ventures,
Dean DeVries. Dean, how are you, my friend?
Oh, I am doing amazing, man. Has it been 14 years? It feels like ages.
It feels like 40. Today, we're going to be talking about how the fact that there's literally
14 days. If you're listening to this on the day it comes out, there's 14 days left of this year.
And we want to talk about how your 2021 starts right now. Yeah, I am loving this time of year because it is the most
important time for 2021. And if you're listening to this and like wondering what that means,
you know, in business, it's all about momentum, you know, and really just in anything,
you know, so today is we're going to dive deep into momentum and really help you get clear on reflecting
on some of the ways that you've gotten momentum in 2020 and some of the ways that you didn't
so that we can learn from them and really commit to having the best year ever, regardless
of how your year went, whether it was a bad year, a good year,
or a great year, it doesn't really matter. 2021 is in your hands. And so the purpose of this
episode is really to give you some tools and some awarenesses and some things to think about
as these next two weeks build momentum into 2021. So I'm excited.
Yeah. And the thing that I want to say before we dive into talking about this
is probably the most important part of business, life, fitness, everything that you do,
relationships. And the first thing I want to say before we dive into actually giving these
business tips on how to actually start the year strong is to say this. First off, you are 100%
responsible for the results in your business. If your business is booming right now, that is your fault. If your business is in the shitter
right now, that is your fault. It's not any outside circumstances. It's not COVID's fault.
It's not your wife's fault, your husband's fault. It's not the president's fault. It's not the
economy's fault because no matter what, there's always something that you could blame as being the reason why my business isn't working, why my relationship isn't working,
why my mindset isn't working, all these things.
But when you really make a change in everything that you do, no matter what it is, it's when
you look at it and you say, I take full responsibility for the results no matter what.
And at this point in time, if my business is not doing the way that I want it to, it's
my fault. I won't
blame it on anybody else. Because once you step into that feeling is when you step into your power
and you go, well, if I'm taking full responsibility for my business that right now, the good thing
about that is that means I can take full responsibility for my business is about to go.
Right. Yeah, totally. I think some of the reason why some people don't take full responsibility is because really it's just an ego thing, right? Especially when it's bad results to be able to say, hey, that want to get great results, you know, embodying that belief of,
you know, my business is 100% my fault. I, everything that happens in my business
is all because of me. And to your point, that is the most empowering thing because you can't
blame anything outside of, of you. And just knowing that, that you are in 100% control of your results gives you the freedom, gives you the ability to go after a vision and step into a possibility that maybe didn't exist before.
But because you take full responsibility for your results, that's the very first thing. If you want to create amazing results, you've got to take
full responsibility, not just for the great results, but also for the bad results and get
the empowerment that you can make a change. You can take it as high as you want.
Exactly. And so with that, I want to talk about, let's talk about 2020 before we dive into 2021.
So what I want you guys all to do is to reflect on your business in 2020. So if you have your
own business, or if you've been starting a in 2020. So if you have your own business,
or if you've been starting a side business, or if you're a salesperson, I want you to,
even if you're a CEO, reflect on your business in 2020. What results did you get? Was this a good
year? Was this a down year? Was this an up year? I want you to think about those results and take
full ownership, knowing that your results were based off of the person that you were in 2020.
And we're going to dive in more into that. But the person that you were in 2020, the person that you were, not the things that you did necessarily, that is a part of it, but the person that you were
in 2020. So what positive things happened in 2020 in your business? What positive things happened?
And what did you do or believe that created those positive
things? Yeah. Yeah. And just to touch on that for a moment, as you're going through this exercise,
and by the way, if you're listening to this, literally take a moment and dive into this.
What positive things happened in 2020 in your business? And what did you do? What did you
believe? How did
you show up in order to create that? So I think it's really important to build an awareness of
the positive things that happened and the positive things that you did in order to create that. And
obviously those are going to be things that as you move into 2021 to continue embodying.
Yeah. And then on the other side of that, the flip side of that, you have, what did you miss out on because of the person that you were and how you showed up? So maybe
you were living in a state of fear most of the year, and maybe you thought, oh my gosh,
well, because of this thing is happening, my business could possibly fail because of COVID,
my business could possibly fail because of riots, my business could possibly fail because of the
presidency, my business could possibly fail. So what, what did you miss out on because of the person that you were? And maybe if you
had shown up as a different person, your business might have grown versus taking a dip down, right?
Yeah, totally. And this, you know, this, this question, you know, what did you miss out on?
So this could be, this could be like the, the gut wrench, right? Where it's like, oh man, I did miss out on that. You know, I used this as an excuse. I leaned on this as a reason
why I can't succeed or whatever, whatever it was, whether it was an outside circumstance or whether
it was just a mindset thing that was holding you back, really get clear on what it is that you
missed out on and allow yourself to feel the pain of that.
Because if you don't feel the pain, you know, Tony Robbins talks about the pleasure,
plain pleasure, pain principle, right? Where we're either moving towards pleasure or away
from pain. And so if we build an awareness of the things that we missed out on, because we
didn't show up the best way, or we believed in things that weren't empowering,
right? We've got to feel the pain of that. So we know to move away from that and move into something
that's more exciting and more in alignment with what you really want.

100%. So now we've basically looked back on 2021 or 2020. Now we're going to look into the future.
And I want you to decide right now. And the good thing about being a podcast, you can pause,
Dean and I, at any time. You can literally pause this right now and take out a pen and paper and start writing
these things down. Whether you have a business or not, you can literally go through this exact
exercise. Decide what you want in 2021 and what it's going to be for you. What results do you
want? What is your number one, number two, and number three most important goals? So if you need
to pause this, pause this and write it down. What are your three most important goals. So if you need to pause this, pause this and write down what are your three most important goals of 2021? I want you to figure that out. And the most
important part, if you've ever listened to me talk about goals, is to get more clear and more clear
and more clear and more clear and more clear. Because I always say it. People are like, oh,
well, Rob, I just want to make more money. I want my business to make more money next year.
like, oh, well, Rob, I just want to make more money. I want my business to make more money next year. All right. Well, if your business made $200,000 this year and next year you make $200,001,
you just hit your goal. But I'm assuming if you want your business to make more money
and to bring in more revenue, you didn't want to make just one extra dollar. So I need you to get
very clear of exactly what it is that you want. The more clear that you can get on it,
the better chance you have of actually hitting it because now you want. The more clear that you can get on it, the better
chance you have of actually hitting it because now you can put a plan behind it. And I used to
always say this, and I still say it all the time, is you can't hit a target that you can't see.
If you don't see the target, it's going to be really hard. And I always say, if you take the
number one archer in the world with a bow and arrow, he's going to beat you every single time.
But if you blindfold him and spin him around and he has no idea where the target is,
you have a better chance of hitting it, not because you're more skilled, but just simply because
you can what?
You can see that target.
Hmm.
The other thing about this too is allow yourself to really step into a possibility that might
be uncomfortable for you.
In other words, you know, if you did make, you know, $200,000 last year, don't make your goal 201,000 or 200, like do something that'll stretch you,
you know, set a goal, set a commitment and a vision that when you do achieve it,
it'll be life-changing for you. Because again, if, if you are 100% responsible for the results in your business
and what you create, you can become that version of you, which is really, we'll dive into that in
a second, but I just want to invite you to get really clear on something that is specific,
that's measurable, and something that stretches you outside of your comfort zone, outside the
realm of what the old version of you in 2020 might think is even impossible. So like just tap into
that version of you where if you believe that anything is possible, what could 2021 mean for
you? What could 2021 look like? And even if it's not a income amount or a number on a spreadsheet, what's an
experience that you want to have? What's something that you've been dying to do? What's something on
your bucket list that you can make happen in 2021? Love that. And now that we've figured out what it
is that you want, hopefully you've paused this, you've figured out exactly what it is that you want,
the next thing is to figure out who you need to be
in order to get that.
And so you have to realize,
if you say your business did $200,000 this year
and now you wanna do $300,000 in revenue next year,
well, you have to realize you have to be a different person
in order to get to that 300,000.
You have to show up differently,
your habits have to change, your identity around your business has to change as well. Because ultimately,
if you were the person that could bring in $300,000 in revenue, you would have already
done it this past year. And so you need to actually transform into the person that can
run a business and will run a business that creates that $300,000. And so now that we figured
out what you need to do and what you're going to do and what the goals are, now I want you to ask
yourself the question, who do I need to be in order to have that success? One of my favorite
quotes around this is Jim Rohn. And Jim Rohn says, success is something that you attract by the
person that you become. He doesn't say success is something that you attract by the stuff that you
do. It's the person that you become. And there's something super important here
because your habits are always attached to your identity. And so if you can change your identity
of who you are, who you think you are and how you show up, your habits will automatically change.
If somebody thinks, for instance, let's just, you know, completely go outside of business.
Somebody thinks to themselves, yeah, well, my whole family is overweight. So my whole family is overweight. So I'm just going to
be overweight. Well, if that's their identity and that's what they actually truly believe,
they're less likely to have habits that would line up with someone who's fit, right? So they're
going to have habits that line up more with someone who is overweight. So what would they do?
Well, a couple of things. They're probably not going to go to the gym as often because why? My whole family's overweight. That's my identity. So I'm
going to be overweight as well. If I believe that exact same thing, I'm probably not going to eat
as healthy. Why? Because what's the point of eating healthy? Because I'm going to be overweight
anyways. I might as well eat a pizza, whatever it is. And so your identity will decide your habits,
which will decide your actions, which will decide your actions,
which will decide your results. So if you want to change your results, what do you need to do?
You need to go back down the line and decide who you need to be in order to attract that level of
success, right? Totally. Yeah. And with the identity and deciding who you are going to be in 2021, there's several things
to consider, like, you know, not just who you're going to be, right? It's that, that is the umbrella
in which belief systems, what do you have to believe? You know, when you imagine the version
of you that can create these possibilities for 2021, what are you talking about most often?
create these possibilities for 2021. What are you talking about most often? Who are you surrounding yourself with? Right. What do you, and specifically, you know, the, the, the start, stop,
continue. This is an exercise that I love going through even on just a daily basis has so much,
so much weight, but ask yourself, what do you have to start doing differently?
What do you have to stop doing and what do you have to stop doing? And what do you have to continue doing?
Yeah. And it's kind of like divorcing the old version of yourself, right? What do you need to
stop doing? Like what is the old version of you doing that is not allowed to come into 2021
because of the results that you want? So maybe you look at it and you go, well,
the newer version of me that would be able to run a business that's doing $300,000 in revenue this year probably won't sleep in.
And if I look back at last year, I did a good amount of sleeping in.
And so I'm going to have to get rid of that.
Something I'm going to have to stop doing.
What do we need to start doing?
Well, I probably need to start having a morning routine of meditation because I know that
there was some anxiety around everything that's happening, around all of the COVID stuff.
There was anxiety around, would my business be shut down?
There was anxiety, what do I do with my employees?
And I knew that if I probably meditated more, I would be able to handle it better.
So maybe I should start meditating.
And what do I need to continue doing?
You know what?
Working out in the morning really gave me a lot of energy.
And I feel like that really carried me through the day.
So I'm going to continue working out.
And so now you have a couple different things. Number one, you know your goals, you know who you need to be.
And now we're going to make a plan and talk about what you need to stop doing, what you start doing
and what you need to continue doing. And now if you actually take the time and go through and do
this, you look at a piece of paper, once again, pause this at any time. And now you've got a plan
for 2021. And that's the most beautiful thing about it.
Yeah.
And you just have to recognize, right, that by doing the same thing over and over again
and expecting different results is insanity.
It's the definition of insanity.
And so if you want a different life in 2021, a different business in 2021, you have to
do things differently.
And 2021 starts now. And, you know, just on in that
frame of starting, it's starting right now. We build momentum in everything that we do in life.
This is how we started this conversation up, right? It just think about a car, right? It's a
lot more China takes a lot more energy to get a car going from zero to 60 than 60 to a hundred.
And think about the habits and think about the routines and think about all of the things that
you are doing in your life. That's really positive and, and bringing some really positive results.
The toughest part was just getting started, getting into that routine. And so that's what
these next two weeks are really all about. Just decide to be that person right now. This is the fork in the road. You can, you can choose to have
repeat 2020 all over again. And you know, we all know that if you don't make a change, you will
just continue getting what you're getting. And Hey, if you're cool with that, then, you know,
all the power to you. But if you're listening to this, chances are you're
the type of person that wants more, that wants to change. And this is the fork in the road.
And in order to change, you have to do something different. So it all really starts right now,
building momentum into those habits, into that new version of you that can create what it is
that you actually want. Yeah. And here's what I'm going to invite everybody to do.
it is that you actually want. Yeah. And here's what I'm going to invite everybody to do.
I want you to mentally divorce the person that you were in 2020. One of my favorite phrases is by Alan Watson. He says, you're under no obligation to be who you were five minutes ago.
I'm going to tell all of you right now, you're under no obligation to be who you were in 2020.
I want you to look at that piece of paper, figure out who the person is that would create that
piece of paper, figure out who the person is that would create that $300,000 a year business.
And I want you to figure out what they do, who they hang out with, what time they wake up,
what does their morning routine look like, what type of people they surround themselves with,
what do they eat, how often do they work out. I want you to plan out that person as detailed as possible. And I want you to wake up tomorrow and be that person. Hell,
I want you to be that person as soon as we get done with this episode. As soon as you turn this off, I want you to step in to being the
person who has a business that's doing $300,000 for the year of 2021. That's how you change your
business is by stepping into that person saying, I'm going to divorce the old me. I'm going to
step into the new me and I'm going to do what this person would do.
And all you have to do, some people talk trash about and say, oh, I don't like the phrase act as if. Well, fuck that. I think that you should act as if. Act as if right now you are the person
who has all of the qualities, all of the traits, all of the mindset, all of the habits that you
need to make $300,000 a year, a million dollars a year, whatever your goal is, $100,000
a year to be that person and step into that person today so that by the time January 1st
rolls around, guess what?
You've had a two-week start on how to be that person.
And that's the key to it, is that you can divorce who you were so that you can then
jump into and marry the person who you want to be. So wake up today,
wake up tomorrow, wake up the next day, and just start being the person that you need to be in
order to track the level of success that you want for 2021. So that's what we got for you for today's
episode. If you love this episode, please share it with someone that you know and love. And if
you're one of the people that's out there and you want to grow your business and make your business your dream business that you want to
