Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to today's episode of the Mindset Mentor Podcast. I'm your host, Rob Dial. And if you have not yet done so, hit that subscribe button so that you never miss another podcast episode. Today, we're gonna be talking about how to chunk down your life and live your life in the headlights.
Starting point is 00:00:22 If that doesn't make any sense to you, don't you worry, my friend. I'm going to explain exactly what that means. So if you don't know, if you've missed the past few episodes, I'm in Sedona. I'm finishing up writing a book. And part of the book I'm talking about is this aspect of living your life in the headlights. And side note, if you happen to follow me on Instagram and you want to see me torture myself, it was really hard for me today to get to writing. So I made myself jump into the cold pool when it was 48 degrees outside.
Starting point is 00:00:51 It was 30 degrees last night. It was like 45 inside of that freaking thing. And if you don't, if you want to see it, just go Rob Dial Jr. R-O-B-D-I-A-L-J-R. You can see me torture myself in my stories. But besides that, when I'm talking about living your life in
Starting point is 00:01:05 the headlights and chunking it down, here's the way that life works. You got to put in work. You got to get shit done. And the way to get shit done is to stop worrying and projecting yourself into the future and thinking about this long, long road of life because life, it is short, but it is also a very long road that we're walking. But when you start thinking about your goals 10 years from now, that's a long way away. And one of the things about thinking that far ahead is that thinking that far ahead can actually demotivate you in the moment because it feels so far away. So if you're sitting there, you're like, you know what? I want to be worth $10 million and have a thousand employees in 10 years. And you have $100 in your bank account and you don't even have a thousand employees in 10 years, and you have a hundred dollars
Starting point is 00:01:45 in your bank account and you don't even have a company, well, it can seem really big to think that far in the future. So sometimes thinking that far in the future can actually be demotivating for you. But if you work it backwards and you live your life like you're in the headlights, which I'll explain in just a second, then it'll help you out because then you won't have paralysis by analysis. All too often, people are overthinking everything that they need to do. They're overthinking this, they're overthinking that, when in reality, they just need to start on the path. That's it. One of my favorite quotes is,
Starting point is 00:02:19 a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If you're sitting there and you're feeling like you're overthinking or you're feeling like you're demotivated because your goals are too big and you're not where you want to be right now, well, then what might be happening is you're thinking about mile 1,000 when you should be thinking about step one. And that's the thing. When you take one step, then you can focus on the next step. But if you haven't even taken the first step, then why are you worrying about the next one? Why are you worrying about mile 473 when you're on step two? Think about that for a second. You got to just really think about why you would do that to yourself. It's paralysis by analysis. We overthink and that overthinking actually holds
Starting point is 00:02:56 us back from taking any action at all, right? And it makes you do nothing. Like imagine this for a second. You decide that you're going to go out to a real nice dinner. And it's an expensive dinner. And you sit down and you order this big, huge steak or big, huge salad or whatever it is that you want. You order this big old something. And it comes out and you force the entire thing into your mouth at one point in time. Wouldn't that be weird to just force?
Starting point is 00:03:24 I got a 12-ounce steak. Force the entire 12-ounce steak into your face at one point in time. Wouldn't that be weird to just force, I got a 12-ounce steak, force the entire 12-ounce steak into your face at one point in time? Everybody in the restaurant would be like, what is this person doing? Well, that's what people literally think they need to do in order to get to success. You don't have to get anxiety about eating the entire steak at once because you eat it small bite at a time. That's how you also have to live your life, one bite at a time. But you're trying to shove the whole freaking steak into your face, right? How many chews do you need to chew? I don't know. It's a lot though. And as long as you just realize, hey, I just need to focus on this next bite, you'll be good. So you don't get
Starting point is 00:04:02 anxious about all of the food that you need to eat when a plate comes out. You just know you've done it so many times. Hey, one bite at a time, one bite at a time, I'll be good. And so why is that any different than you actually working towards your goals? Why is it any different? Well, maybe you don't have the same, you know, you haven't worked towards your goals as much as you've eaten food. Yeah, probably. But there's no difference. It's very simple. There's two things that we really do that hold us back from taking action and working towards what it is that we want.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Number one is we make it out to be way bigger than it actually is. We make it out to be so big. We think that this is a mountain that we have to climb. And one of the things that I find about people is that we actually think it's going to be harder than it is. It's really crazy. Like I've helped, I've consulted with thousands of business owners over the past 15, 16 years. And one of the crazy things about it is they almost always make it out to be harder than it actually is. They make it out to be bigger. They think it's going to be more difficult. For some reason, we make it to be a mountain
Starting point is 00:05:05 when it was just a little hill that we had to climb. That's it. So number one, the first thing is that we make it out to be way bigger than it is, way harder than it is. And number two, a lot of us have never done it before. And humans like to look into the past for proof of stuff that we've done before. But if you're on a path of doing stuff
Starting point is 00:05:26 that you've never done before, if you look in your past, you're not going to have any examples of it. And so there's a part of you that's like, I don't know if I can do this. And if you have that feeling of, I don't know if I can do this, well, then it's going to hold you back
Starting point is 00:05:35 from actually going and taking the step of actually doing it. So number one, we make things to be way bigger than they actually are. And number two, we've never done it before. So we kind of think that we can't do it. And so let me give you the quick example of exactly what I mean by living your life in the headlights. If you can get this and you can understand this, it can absolutely change your life. Okay. I live in Austin, Texas, but let's say that I want to drive over to Houston
Starting point is 00:05:57 to my friend Mike's house. You know, my friend Mike lives in Houston and I'm going to drive to his house tonight. When I get into my car, I'm not going to see his house because it's a two hour and 45 minute trip over to his house. But we don't get inside of our car to go for a drive at night and get really anxious because we can't see the destination and we can't see the entire route. Do we? No. What do we do? We turn on the headlights, Do we? No, what do we do? We turn on the headlights.
Starting point is 00:06:26 We see the next 100 feet in front of us. And then we just drive those 100 feet. And what happens when we're driving our car? Well, you can see the next 100 feet. And you can see the next 100 feet. And you can see the next 100 feet. And you can see the next 100 feet. Well, that's exactly how it is whenever you're going towards your goals. You're not going to know what mile 473
Starting point is 00:06:46 is like, but you can see the next 10 steps in front of you. And so can you live your life the exact same way as you would as if you were getting into your car and you were driving at night? That is what I mean by living your life in the headlights. You're not going to see the entire route. The entire route doesn't matter. What matters is just get moving. Just start heading in the direction of wherever it is that you're trying to go. Hey, if you're the type of person who's always thinking about new business ideas or wondering what's the next side hustle that I should spin up, check out the podcast My First Million. The hosts Sean Puri and Sam Parr have each built eight-figure businesses and sold them to Amazon and to HubSpot. And each week, they brainstorm business ideas that you can start tomorrow. And these can be side hustles that make a few grand a month or big billion dollar ideas or anything in between. Two of the podcast episodes that I really like was episode 158, where Sam and Sean explain how to make millions by buying Michael Jordan's home and turning it into a museum. And since a lot of you guys are business owners and have side hustles, I think you're definitely going to like this one.
Starting point is 00:09:01 Another one that I like as well is their interview with Rob Dyrdek, which was episode 225. Super fascinating. The guy built a $400 million media empire and has been tracking every second of his day for the past decade. It's crazy. So make sure to check out My First Million. That's My First Million on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.
Starting point is 00:09:21 So like I said, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. You can't take your second step until you've taken your first step. You can't. There's no way. It's impossible. And so instead of focusing on the second step or the third step or the fifth step, why don't you just focus on the step that you need to take right now? What do you need to do today to get you closer to your goal? That's it. What do you need to do today to get you closer to your goal? That's it. What do you need to do today to get you closer to your goal? So you know what? I'm looking at this book that I'm writing and I'm thinking like, oh my God, it's so many freaking words and it's a lot to put down. And I started thinking, I noticed myself doing it today. I was thinking about all of the words that I have to put down.
Starting point is 00:10:01 It's like 50, 60,000 words. And I'm thinking about that. I'm going, oh my God, I still have a lot to do. Like I felt like I've made a lot of progress, but I'm about halfway through. I've still got so much that I've got to get done. And I noticed myself getting caught up in all of the stuff that I need to do versus, hey, Rob, what do you need to do right now? And then what I made myself do is I just started typing.
Starting point is 00:10:23 I just started typing. And I went, you know what? I don't know what's going to come up next, but let me just go ahead and start typing. And I started typing, you know, in this section, I want to talk about this. And this section, I want to talk about this. I don't need details.
Starting point is 00:10:34 I just put like a very vague structure together. And then what happened is once I started working towards it, it started coming together more. It started coming together more. It started coming together more. And that's what's important to realize is that you kind of have to start your life sometimes in working towards your goals with the ready, fire, aim mentality. I say this all the time. The thing that I think has made my life successful, my business successful, the podcast successful, all of that, is that if I notice myself thinking too much, I just say, fuck it, take action. That's it. If I notice myself thinking too much, fuck it, take action.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Like that's what I literally did today. When I noticed myself, I was like, you know, I need to jump in the pool. And I was like, well, you know, maybe I should do my workout first. Maybe I should put, and I put my headphones, no joke, this is what I did. I put my headphones in and I was like, let me jump around a little bit. Give myself anxiety. You know what? I got to do my breathing exercises. I got to get this going. And I noticed myself start to just like, oh, I got to do this. I got to do this. I got to do this. I was like, nope, open the door, took my AirPods out, jumped inside of the pool. Why? Because I knew that I was starting to focus too much into the future and I just had to ready fire aim. I'll just jump in the freaking
Starting point is 00:11:42 pool and I'll figure it out. What is it in your life that you just need to jump into the pool and then figure it out? Because too many people are sitting there planning and planning, and then they plan on their planning and they plan to plan and they do more planning about the planning that they just planned. And they never even take any action at all. They're keeping themselves busy instead of keeping themselves productive. Have you ever fallen in this trap before where you, you know, like a lot of people themselves productive. Have you ever fallen this trap before? Where you, you know, like a lot of people will be like, you know what?
Starting point is 00:12:08 I want to get in shape. And then so what do they do? They go by, you know, they take an entire day and they, you know what? I'm going to get some yoga pants. I need to go shopping for some yoga pants. You know what I need? I probably need to get some new workout shoes
Starting point is 00:12:20 because I haven't had workout shoes in like two years. You know, I should probably do, I should probably research, I should probably research what the best yoga pants and what the best gym shoes are. I should probably see and go into each one of the gyms in the area and just find out which one's best for my personality. And in reality, they spent an entire day researching what they should do to work out versus actually just getting their butt moving, going for a run, doing 100 push-ups and 100 jumping jacks and 100 sit-ups and 100 squats. And we tell ourselves that that's productive. That's not productive. That's being busy. That's us acting like we're doing something versus actually doing something.
Starting point is 00:13:01 Let me ask you, have you ever caught yourself doing this before? We all have. We've all done it before. We're like, oh, let me do my research on this. And then I'm like, well, a whole lot of research I did today. Good thing I'm starting to move into the direction of my goals. No, you don't need to buy new yoga pants. You don't need to buy a new workout outfit. You don't need to buy new shoes. What you need to do is you need to fix your eating and you need to fix your workout routine and you need to just go for a run or do some squats or pick up some heavy stuff. That's all you need to do. So we've got to stop disguising being busy and thinking that it's productive with being actually productive. What is it that you can do today that will move the needle towards the direction that you want to go? If you're not taking a few needle moving actions every single day, you're tricking yourself. You're not doing
Starting point is 00:13:52 what you need to do. And so what is it that you've been putting off that you need to get done? What is it that you've been planning too much that you need to start working on? What is it that you've been preparing to do when in reality you just need to do it? Because here's the thing that I've come to find. I know a lot of people who are successful. I know a lot of people who are unsuccessful. One of the common things that I see among people who are successful is they just go. They just go and they figure it out along the way. And a lot of unsuccessful people are like, well, I have to make sure that it's perfect. I have to plan because I'm a planner. I have to make sure that I do this right. I have to do my research.
Starting point is 00:14:28 I have to make sure I don't fuck this up. When in reality, if you want to work towards your goals and create the life that you want to, you just got to go and realize that you are going to mess up along the way. You are going to fuck a lot of stuff up, but that's completely fine. That's part of the process because you can't figure out what you're supposed to do until you figure out what you're not supposed to do. You can't find yourself until you've lost yourself. process because you can't figure out what you're supposed to do until you figure out what you're not supposed to do. You can't find yourself until you've lost yourself. Well, you can't figure out the path of exactly how to go to where you're trying to go
Starting point is 00:14:51 unless you mess some things up. And you have to understand that you're not gonna see the route from Austin to Houston at night. You're just not going to. And you might take a drive and you might start going down that way and there might be a detour.
Starting point is 00:15:04 There might be a car crash. There might be a car crash. There might be, I don't know, something in the road that you've got to work around. That's going to happen. But as long as you're just progressing into the direction of what it is that you're trying to go, like where you're trying to go, you're going to eventually get there.
Starting point is 00:15:18 That's the beautiful thing about life. And one thing that you have to get really like dialed into your mind, no pun intended, I guess, yeah, pun intended, but you have to get dialed into your mind is the direction that you're heading is more important than the speed that you're heading at, right? If you just start on the path, eventually you're going to get there. And one thing I remember hearing years and years and years ago before I started my podcast that really helped me out, I was watching an interview with Jared Leto. And Jared Leto was being asked by this
Starting point is 00:15:48 lady, like, why are you so successful? What happened? Because Jared Leto is like a Grammy award-winning artist. And he's also like won a bunch of awards besides music as a actual actor as well. And he said, you know what? A long time ago when I was younger, I realized that most people just don't start. And if I just start, I'll be so much further ahead than everybody else. Think about that for a second. Like there's so much, I'll never forget that to the day I die. He said, most people just don't start. And if I just start, I'm already so far ahead of everybody else. And then let me add something on the back end of that, right? If you just start and don't give up, you will win. You will succeed.
Starting point is 00:16:28 You will get to wherever it is that you want to go. Maybe it'll take a long time. Maybe it won't. But as long as you're heading in the right direction, nothing else matters. Are you going to mess up? Yes, of course you are. Success is 99% failure.
Starting point is 00:16:44 The guy who created Honda, that's his quote. Success is 99% failure. The guy who created Honda, that's his quote. Success is 99% failure. You just got to win and succeed one time. You don't have to succeed all the time. You just have to succeed once. How amazing is that to think of? And you don't fail along the way. You figure it out along the way.
Starting point is 00:17:02 The only time that you fail, if you have a fear of failure, the only time that you fail, if you have a fear of failure, the only time that you fail is when you don't start or when you give up. That's it. The only time that you fail is when you don't start or you give up. As long as you're just getting and going into the direction, you just start moving into the direction, whatever is it you want, eventually, you will figure it out. It might take you longer than everybody else. It might take you less time than everybody else. But as long as you live with the mentality of ready, fire, aim, hey, I've just got to go. I've just got to go. I've just got to go. There's nothing else that I can do. I just have to go. And I'll figure it out along
Starting point is 00:17:38 the way. Ready, fire, aim. And realize that if you live your life in the headlights, knowing that you're not going to see the entire route, I don't know what the next year looks like for me. I don't know what the next five years, 10 years looks like for me. I know what I would like it to look like, but I am under the assumption it's probably not going to look exactly like I want it to. I'm completely okay with that. But what I do know is that every day, I'm just trying to take little tiny steps into the future that I'm trying to create. I'm heading in the right direction. Will I get there? Maybe, eventually, who knows?
Starting point is 00:18:12 But I will end up somewhere one day. And if I'm taking the right actions, I know that someday, wherever I am, wherever that place is, will look good. I will be proud of myself because one of the ways that you build confidence is by making sure that you do whatever it is that you want to do every single day, making sure that you push yourself, making sure that you're heading in the right direction.
Starting point is 00:18:33 One of the ways that you strip confidence from yourself is to go, you know what, I really want to do this. And then you give up on yourself. If you want to build confidence, people are born with confidence. If you want to build it, start working towards what it is that you want to do. And slowly but surely, you start to build more and more confidence and more and more confidence. And I'll tell you this, if you just start,
Starting point is 00:18:55 you will find that you are going to be so, so far ahead of everybody else in the next six months, in the next year. And you fast forward five years, seven years, you are light years past everybody else. So trust me, live your life in the headlights. Ready, fire, aim. Just start.
Starting point is 00:19:13 The direction is more important than the speed. Eventually, you will get to where you're trying to go. So that's what I got for you for today's episode.
