Before we dive into today's episode, if you would like a free copy of our motivational ebook called Hack Your Goals, the Step-by-Step Guide to Achieving Success, go to mwfmotivation.com and download it.
It's already been downloaded over a thousand times, so go ahead and get your copy now.
All right, I'll get you the podcast right now.
Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast, which I am proud to say has been rated the number one podcast in iTunes new and noteworthy in six different categories, including self-help
and business, and is a podcast designed to help you grow into the best version of yourself
in 10 to 20 minutes.
Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, we'll take a life topic, break it down, discuss it,
and leave you with thoughts to impact your life and mind. My name is Rob Dial, and the podcast
starts now. Welcome to today's episode. If you have not yet done so, please subscribe to us,
however you listen to us. Also, we are so close to hitting a million downloads in our first 12 months,
and we will not get there unless you guys keep sharing it. So please keep sharing. I keep seeing
my Facebook, all of my stuff being shared. So if you like us on Facebook, facebook.com
slash MWF motivation, please, please, please, please keep sharing it. Keep getting the word
out there. It's only going to help us grow. I keep getting messages from people saying, Hey, I found out about your podcast
because one of my friends shared one of your videos or shared your podcast on their Facebook.
And I just clicked on it and liked what you did. So for those of you guys that keep doing that,
I appreciate it. Keep sharing, keep getting the word out there because that's the only way we're
going to get to a million downloads in the first year. Also, one thing that I'll tell you guys is if you don't follow me on Snapchat yet,
or Instagram, because now Instagram has a Snapchat story, I guess,
follow me on Snapchat at Rob Dial, or follow me on Instagram at MWF Motivation.
The reason why is because I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling,
and I want to share
my travels with you, share motivation with you, keep you guys posted daily, throw as
much motivation as I possibly can to help you guys out throughout your day in any possible
way that I can.
Also, if you are interested in coaching with me, I've been getting a lot of emails lately,
whether it's one-on-one coaching or my group coaching as well.
Send me an email, rob at mwfmotivation.com. And let me know. We can have a conversation around it, see what's
right for you. If you're sitting at the spot where you're just like, you know what, I feel stagnant
and I feel like I've been spinning my wheels and I really just want to take the next step,
the group coaching and the one-on-one coaching might be something that you really need that will
help you get past the plateau that you're at. Also, last but not least, is if you have any company events, I've been doing a lot
of speaking lately. I'm leaving next week to go to a speaking engagement. I have another one in a
month. I'm doing a lot of speaking. I had another one a couple of weeks ago. I'm doing a lot of
speaking engagements right now. So if you're interested in having me come to speak at your
company event or your conference or your seminar, any of those things, send me an email, rob at mwfmotivation.com.
Let me know that you're interested in it. We'll try to get it squared away. I'll speak with
whoever needs to be spoken to at your company. And if they bring me out, they fly me out to
wherever it is, I'll take you to go get coffee or lunch or dinner or whatever and get to know you
as a repayment for saying thank you for bringing me out.
So that being said, what we're going to be talking about today is your brain.
The brain is, in my personal opinion, the most fascinating thing in the world.
So I love reading about it.
I like to geek out and nerd out about it.
And that being said, I want to talk about your brain. And I want you to understand whenever you
start to act a certain way, whenever you notice a habit, or whenever you start to do something,
and you're like, why the heck do I do that? Why am I this way? Start to think about this episode
and the way your brain is and what it's designed to do and why you act the way that you do.
Because once you can come back to your brain and think about
that way, you can kind of hack your way into making your brain work the way that you want to.
Now, that being said, most people, and you guys may have heard me say this before, most people,
well, if you watch the videos that I put up on my Facebook, you've probably heard this, but
most people never take control of their brain. They just leave it up to chance. They're just like, you know what? Yeah, i'll just i'll just let my brain do whatever it wants to do
They don't really think of it as something they could take control of and I always give the example
You know what if I said I want to raise my right arm and put my hand as high as I can in the air
Right, and then I went to go do it and it didn't do it
It just started wobbling and you know flying all over the place and it looked like a you know A fish that was out of water flapping on the dock and it was just moving wobbling and flying all over the place. And it looked like a fish that
was out of water flapping on the dock. And it was just moving and going crazy and all over the place.
I'd be like, what the heck is wrong with my arm? Why is my arm doing this? Why is my arm out of
control? Because it's my arm. It's on my body. I'm supposed to be in control of it, right?
Something, I would think something was wrong with my arm. You would think something was wrong with
your arm if you had the same situation happen.
Why?
Because you're in control of it.
It's part of your body.
Your arm is part of your body.
Guess what is also part of your body?
Your brain.
Your mind is part of your body.
But people, for some reason, never take control of it.
Most people never decide to take control.
And they let it wander
and run all over the place and instill fears in themselves. And then they go, oh, that's just the
way my life is. It's just happening. You know, that's not true. You're in control of it. You're
in control of the way that you look at things, your perspective on things, the way you react
to something, the way you react to somebody that's quote unquote pushing your buttons.
No, they're not quote unquote pushing your buttons. You are reacting to them saying something or doing something. You're in
control. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent.
So you have to realize in order to take the next step in your life,
to realize in order to take the next step in your life, you have to understand that your mind,
your brain is under your control. If you are able to move your hands the way that you want to,
guess what? You're also able to make your brain do what you want to as well. And you can't control your first thought, but you can always control your second thought. And you have to realize this,
your brain is not designed
to keep you happy. It's not designed to make sure that you're successful or that you have good
relationships or that you make a lot of money or that you have a lot of nice cars or a big house.
It's not designed to do any of that stuff. Those are all things that we just made up.
What is designed to do is one thing, to keep you alive, to keep you safe.
That's it.
Now, that being said, you have to realize your brain is a 2 million year old piece of
machinery.
Our technology is moving way quicker than our 2 million year old brains, which are basically
artifacts, are moving.
It's not designed to keep you happy.
It's not designed to make sure you're successful It's not designed to keep you happy. It's not designed
to make sure you're successful. It's designed to keep you alive. There's actually a mechanism in
your brain that turns. It's like at a certain point, it says, okay, enough's enough. We're
at our breaking point. And when you think you're done, if you go for a long run and your brain
says, hey, hey, hey, it kind of gives you the tap on the shoulder. We're done. We're done. Hey,
you can't do anymore. When you get that tap on the shoulder. We're done. We're done. Hey, you can't do anymore.
When you get that tap on the shoulder, you're usually only about 40% done.
So if you're only going to the point that you think that is possible for you,
you're only working at about 40% of your true capacity.
Let that stay in for a second.
When you're tired, you're only about really 40% tired.
If you think you haven't gotten enough sleep and you're like, man, today's a long day. I don't know if I could do anymore. You're only about 40% of the way there. So you have to think about that.
Your brain is designed to keep you alive. It has that mechanism. So if you're a runner,
if you've ever gone for a long run, some of you guys might know this. If you go for a long distance run, there's a point where you're like, no, I can't do anymore.
But then if you keep pushing through, you kind of go on autopilot and your legs, I've done the
point before where I hate running. I absolutely hate it. But there was one time, longest I've
ever ran before. I remember I got past like four miles and then it just felt like I wasn't even
running anymore. My body was just doing it. And I got to the point where I was like, I don't think I could do anymore.
And then I just kept going. And I was like, wait, I've gone a lot farther than I thought I could.
And it was like eight miles that I ran without stopping. I've never, up until that point,
had never run more than a mile straight. And some of you guys are like, only eight miles.
Yeah. Well, some of you guys know that you get to a certain point.
You get your runner's stride.
But your brain tells you before that runner's stride, hey, it's time to go.
It's that little tap on the shoulder.
Hey, stop, we're done.
But in reality, you're nowhere near done.
Your brain is designed to keep you safe.
So remember that.
Now, there's a big difference between two million years ago and today.
The difference is that we used to
have to worry about food and staying alive. We used to have to worry about staying away from lions
and taking care of each other. And we didn't want to go into dark places because we didn't know what
was in there and we didn't know if we'd be able to live. So we couldn't really go through our
day-to-day process like we can now. We don't have
safety issues like we did 2 million years ago. You know, you get out of your house, you have safety,
you have water, you have food, you have shelter, you have the internet now, which is crazy. You
have a car that drives you, which is pretty safe all the time. So you don't have these crazy things
to worry about. So naturally though, your brain still wants to worry about
things. So what do you worry about? You worry about all the things that actually don't matter.
You make up little tiny things in your brain. We all do this. We make up little tiny things
in our brain because we think that we're supposed to, our brains naturally want to worry and have
fear of something. We're used to worrying about, because that kept us alive, worrying about eating the wrong berries,
worrying about walking by the wrong bush. But nowadays, we don't have those things to worry
about. So what do we worry about? Oh, I wonder if they'll like me. Oh, I don't want to stand out.
I wonder, oh, I'm afraid I won't fit in. I'm afraid of rejection. I'm afraid of failure.
I'm afraid of all of these different things. I'm afraid of, you know, not being liked. I'm afraid I won't fit in. I'm afraid of rejection. I'm afraid of failure. I'm afraid of all of these
different things. I'm afraid of not being liked. I'm afraid of not blah, blah, blah. I'm afraid of
this. I'm afraid of this. And we all have these fears. And this isn't me making fun of our fears.
This is me stating that they are, at this point in time, extremely ridiculous. We can admit that.
Fear of being rejected. you're not going to die
if you get rejected. Fear of failure, you're not going to die if you fail. Fear of not fitting in,
you're not going to die if you don't fit in. Fear of what people think of you, you're not going to
die if people don't think what you want them to think of you. So you have to realize that and you
have to put them into perspective and you think about it, when something like that happens, where you have this and you start freaking out over something,
ask yourself the question, am I going to remember this in 10 years?
10 years from now, am I going to remember this moment? If you are not,
you're wasting your time with something. So move on to the next. And so realize,
this is the only reason of this episode
is I wanted to describe to you how your brain works.
Realize all of the fears.
Our brain hasn't changed that much over the past,
you know, 500,000 million years, 2 million years.
It's changed a lot, but it hasn't changed much.
We still have parts of our brains
that are the animal side of our brains that say,
you know, like, you know,
maybe you should be afraid of, make up fears,
worry about this, worry about this. And then you worry about things that don't even make any sense
to worry about. So that being said, next time that you're sitting and you're like, I wonder what
these people are going to think of me. I wonder if they're going to be judging my presentation.
I wonder if I'm going to fit in. I wonder if I look good. I wonder if blah, blah, blah, blah.
And you have these little tiny fears that you're occupying your mind with,
put it into perspective and go, why am I doing this? What is my brain doing? What's the point
of this? And then you'll go, this doesn't make any sense. I realize why this made sense 2 million
years ago, but now it makes no sense. I need to free myself of all of these worries and all of
these fears because they're not doing me anything except for holding me back from being my true self.
And if I'm only working at 40%,
how can I push myself to get more out of myself,
get more out of every hour, get more out of every day,
get more out of every workout
and become the optimum version of yourself?
And the only way that you can do that
is by mastering your brain and understanding your brain
and taking control of it
and pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, pushing yourself past where you think is
comfortable so that you can see real growth. So if you like this episode, please do me a favor,
