Starting point is 00:00:00 Welcome to the MWF Motivation Podcast, one of the top-rated motivational podcasts in the world. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I come out with a short, to-the-point, no-BS podcast designed to transform you from who you are today into who you want to be. There's no fluff here, just life-changing content. My name is Rob Dial, and the podcast starts now. Welcome to today's episode, if you have not yet done so. Please subscribe to us, however you listen to us. All right, today, what I'm going to be talking about is creating deadlines, creating deadlines for yourself. One of the main reasons why I find that a lot of people
Starting point is 00:00:50 do not get what they want in life is because they don't give themselves a definite 100% deadline that they need to hit their goal by. I'll give you a perfect example. Most people like to set New Year's resolutions. The New Year's resolution usually has a deadline. That's by the end of the year. But one way to actually speed along your New Year's resolutions is to give yourself a deadline of making your New Year's resolution by June 31st or June 30th. I'm not sure how many days. Usually it's just July 1st is what I think because that's six months into the year. So July 1st, for instance, my goal was to be living in Italy by July 1st. That was what I had up everywhere. That was my number one goal for this year. And we're going to be there by June 1st. But you have to think of it this way.
Starting point is 00:01:34 If I didn't give myself a deadline of July 31st or July 1st of having to be there by that time, there's a pretty good chance I might have started and gotten there in September or October. If I would have just said by the end of the year, I may have gotten there by the end of the year, but I said, I will 100% be there by July 1st. And part of it is you have to make that deadline, that actual date. The other part of it is that you have to cut off all other options. Mine was, I will 100% be there by July 1st, right? You have to have that. There are no other options. You have to make the decision that this is the date I will hit it by. And that's the importance of setting deadlines is you have to
Starting point is 00:02:17 figure out, I hear a lot of people where they're like, you know, this is my goal. This is my goal. I want to lose weight. I want to be healthier. I want to be happier. I want to have more money. I want to make more money. All of those are great. All of them are great. The only problem with those is that there's no actual clear goal on what it is and what their date is. So for every goal that you have, it should be very clear on what it is.
Starting point is 00:02:41 You can't just say, I want to be healthier. I want to lose weight. How much weight do you want to lose? You have to know the exact number and by the exact date. So instead of saying this year, I want to lose weight, which you, you know, if you lose one pound this year, that's losing weight. You have to say, I want to lose 10 pounds by July 1st. Once you make that decision and give yourself no other options, it now gives you something to shoot
Starting point is 00:03:05 for, right? It gives you something to shoot for. This is the way that I do everything. I have a new social media manager that I've been working with. And I was like, what is our goal? Okay. We're going to pick up in the next three months. We're working for 40,000 new likes on Facebook page, right? That's a goal. But before we, before that came about, we didn't have any goals. And so there's, it's very obscure so it's very abstract if you don't know exactly what you're shooting for. And that's how everything is. You know, I talk with coaching clients and with athletes as well. And athletes are like, you know, I want to get better.
Starting point is 00:03:37 Well, what does that mean? How many points did you score per game last year? Right? How many more do you need to score in order to move up into the next league? How many more do you have to score in order to be recognized by the next basketball team, the next football team, whatever it might be. You have to know the exact numbers and you have to know the exact deadline. And here's the thing. And the reason why is because most of our goals don't have deadlines. Most of our goals don't have deadlines. And if you don't give yourself
Starting point is 00:04:03 a deadline, well then it's kind of like a bucket list. Hey, I hope I do this before I die. You have to give yourself a definite date. So think about your number one goal for this year. What is your number one goal for 2017? Right? And instead of saying by December 31st, what's another date that you could hit it by? What's a sooner date you could hit it by? One person that I really love is a guy named Peter Thiel. And Peter Thiel was one of the founders of Facebook with Elon Musk. I'm sorry. He's one of the founders of PayPal with Elon Musk. And he was also an early investor in Facebook. He's a multi-billionaire. And he always asks people, he says, what's your 10-year goal? In 10 years, what does your life look like? What is your perfect life? What is your dream? Where are
Starting point is 00:04:41 you in 10 years if everything goes perfect? And then when they give him the answer, he asks the question, how can you get that done in the next six months? Right? You give yourself a deadline and then you shorten it. Exactly like I did. If I said I want to move in Italy by the end of the year, I shortened it in half, July 1st.
Starting point is 00:04:58 But the reason why you want to shorten it, the reason why you want to give yourself deadlines is because the most productive day of any day is the day before you leave for vacation because there are no other options. You've cut off all ties. You're leaving. You're going to another country, whatever it is. You have to get things done. So if you give yourself a deadline like a vacation would be, if you give yourself a deadline, you will be more productive to hit that goal. Or it's another example besides vacation. If you're still in college and listening, or you remember college and you weren't, you know, drink it too much, drink it too much during college. It's like the day before the exam or before your essay or
Starting point is 00:05:34 projects do, you are deadly efficient, right? The day before vacation or the day before an essay or project or exam or any of those things, you are deadly efficient. And the reason why is because you have a date that it has to be done by. That's exactly how your goal should be as well. It forces you to be so efficient and to not get distracted by Facebook or by text messages or by other things. And another good way of doing this too is to give yourself consequences. If I don't hit my goal by December 1st, I have to donate a thousand dollars to a charity, or I have to, you know, do something embarrassing, or I have to go up and do five minutes of standup comedy at an open mic night. And I have to do the jokes that my friends tell me that they want me to do something that that's going to give you a
Starting point is 00:06:19 consequence of, I have to hit this goal by this date or else. And that's how you should live your life. That's how you should set your goals. That's how you should have your dreams and everything that you work for. You need to have a definite time and be clear on the time that you wanna hit it by, but also be very clear on what the consequences are if you don't hit it by that time.
Starting point is 00:06:38 And that is how you hit your goals in the timely manner that you want to. So if you liked this episode, please share it with a friend.
