Today, we're going to be talking about how long it takes to become successful. How long does it take? Have you ever thought about that?
If I continue on this path, how long will it take until I finally get to where I want to be?
Well, let me tell you a story, my favorite story around success, and it is with the Chinese bamboo.
If you've never heard about it, the Chinese bamboo in China gives a lesson of patience,
but also of success as well. Chinese bamboo works like this. You plant the seed for
Chinese bamboo. You give it water. You give it sunshine. You make sure it has all of the right
soil and everything is perfect. In year one, after watering it like crazy, making sure that
everything's perfect, do you know what's happened? Nothing. Nothing. It doesn't even pop out of the
soil. So year two, you do the same thing. You give it the water, you give it the sunshine, make sure the soil is ripe. After year two, do you know what happens?
Nothing. So first year, nothing happens. Second year, nothing happens. Third year,
fourth year, nothing happens. It doesn't even come out of the soil. And then the fifth year,
on average, with Chinese bamboo, boom, it explodes. 80 feet in six weeks. It grows 80 feet in six weeks. Sometimes
it will grow up to two feet per day. People will say that you can literally see it growing. That's
how fast it will actually grow. That's how life is. That's also how success is as well. We think
that we're going to start working on something. We're going to start a business. We're going to
start an Instagram. We're going to start a business. We're going to start an Instagram. We're going to start a podcast. We're going to start whatever it
is. And you know what? Within three days, we're going to be successful. Within three weeks,
three months, we're going to be successful. For those of you guys who've ever started a business
before, you might start a business and not be successful or even be profitable for the first
year. What about that? Do you see it as a failure at that point in time?
Because most people, what happens is we live in a world of instant gratification.
Our phones will tell us anything that we want instantly. We can get food delivered to us instantly. We can get anything on Amazon near instantly. TV, we can watch whatever it is we
want. Any movie basically ever made instantly. Food delivery instantly. It's like everything is
near instant at this point. And so we've almost like started to train ourselves thinking that
whatever we want, we just get immediately. But that's not how life is. That's just how we've
just made things convenient over the years. But that's not how success is. That's not how life
works. Everything in life takes time. You know, if you think of a baby being born, it's not how success is. That's not how life works. Everything in life takes time.
You know, if you think of a baby being born, it's not like you just, you know, have sex one night
and the baby's born the next day. No, it takes nine months. It takes process for a baby to be
created, doesn't it? That's exactly how everything works in life. You don't just work out once and
then you wake up the next morning, you're like, oh my God, I've got a six pack. No, you don't just work out once and then you wake up the next morning like, oh my God, I've got a six pack. No, you don't eat a salad one time and it magically makes you skinny. You don't save $20 and then the
next day you're rich. You don't do, you know, one 18 hour day of working and then you're a millionaire
the next day. That's not how things work. Things take time. But if you work out and you eat healthy and you save the $20
every single day and you work really hard and you fast forward all of that to five years from today,
it's a different world. It's a different body. It's a different bank account. It's a different
business. Everything is completely different. You know, like I think about my podcast when it first
started, it's been seven years now I've been running this podcast, 1300 episodes. Day one of my podcast, 44 downloads,
right? And it grew, it took about six months, but after about six months, I worked really hard for
those six months. Got it to about 80 to 100,000 downloads, 80,000 to 100,000 downloads a month.
And that was awesome. Super
excited about it, but it stayed at that exact same number between 80,000 and a hundred thousand
downloads every single month for three years. For three years, the growth did not come. It didn't
come, but I kept putting out episodes three to four a week, three to four a week, three to four
for years and years and years and years and years. And then it hit some form of a tipping point. I don't know what happened exactly.
Something happened one day and it literally 10x'd in an entire year. It went from 100,000 downloads
a month for three years to a million downloads a month. And then it went to 1.5 million a month.
And then it doubled one month and then it doubled again. And it was just like millions upon millions upon millions. And I was
like, holy crap, what happened? And it went to this number. I was like, I can't even believe
that this many people are listening to me. But for years, it was on the exact same number.
And for the very first day, it was on 44. And it's just like things take time. It took about five years before it really
had that massive explosion. Same thing with the Chinese bamboo. It takes about five years for it
to finally grow. And the crazy thing about it is it never went back down. It took four years.
This is what's crazy about the whole thing. I did the research on it. It took four years
to hit 4 million downloads. Four years, 4 million downloads.
Now it takes two weeks.
That's crazy.
It takes two weeks.
It used to take us, it took us four years to get to 4 million downloads.
Now it takes us two weeks to get to 4 million downloads.
It's just wild to think about.
But what it comes down to is just consistently showing up and putting in the work and putting
in the work and putting in the work.
But what it comes down to is just consistently showing up and putting in the work and putting in the work and putting in the work.
And so when you look at success, whatever success means to you, you have to realize
that it's going to take time.
It's probably not going to be here in a month.
It's probably not going to be here in a year, two years, three years, four years, but five
years, maybe.
Can you believe in something so much that you work really hard towards it for the next
five years?
Can you work at something really hard for the next five years and just see what happens? Not give up five
days into it like you normally do or like most people normally do, but go, I'm going to give
this five years. Like when you, if you take my podcast out, you take business out of all that
stuff. When you see someone on Instagram where you're like, damn, their body is amazing. That's
not something they did in a few months. That's not something they did in a few years. It's like five to seven to 10
years sometimes to get that body. Most people are like, they work out for two weeks and like,
I still look like shit, right? Well, put five years of dedicated effort in the gym and inside
of the kitchen, you're going to have a massive difference. And so you have to realize these things don't take a few months. They don't take a few years.
They're usually past a few years. But you have to find something that you want
and you believe in so much that you're willing to put that time into it.
Right? Just think about that for a second. It takes time.

I was able to get my business to a few hundred thousand decently quick, right? A couple of years,
but then it stayed there for three years. Not growing, but not
exploding and not going down. And then four years in, it 5X'd and it continues to keep growing.
And now we have, you know, over 30 people that work for the company. It's just kind of how life
works. Things take time. Life takes time. Could you imagine a husband going up to his wife and
being like, honey, listen, listen, I know that having a baby is
supposed to take about eight to nine months, but I would really like to take a trip in September.
I know that's the time about the baby's due. Is there a way we could get this baby done in about
four months? He gets slapped. Why? Because it takes about eight to nine months to create a baby,
for a baby to bake. It's like the same thing, where it's just everything in the universe has its own time that it takes. And you might not know the time it's
going to take to get the body that you want, to get the bank account that you want, to get the
success that you want, but you know it's going to take time. There is a certain amount of days.
There's a certain amount of hours, a certain amount of effort that needs to be put in to create
this thing that you want to create. Can you trust enough that it's going to come and that you're going to get the thing that you want,
that you just continue to blindly go on that path and work towards it?
These are the reasons why I love business and why I love fitness is because both business
and fitness are a mirror for life. All of them, both of them are complete mirrors for life.
If you think about the fitness journey that you have to go on, you're going to come up with every fear,
every insecurity. It's going to take time. It's going to take effort. You're going to want to
give up. Same thing for business. You're going to have all of your fears. You're going to have
all of your insecurities. You're going to want to give up. You're going to have ups and downs
and ups and downs. You're going to have times where you just want to just give up on all of it.
But I love both
of them because both of them are a mirror for life. That's exactly how life is as well. There's
going to be ups and downs and ups and downs. There's going to be times where you want to just
give up on something. But if you just continue to keep working at it, it is of my opinion that if
you just work at something and you don't give up, you will eventually get to success. I don't know
how long it's going to take for you to be successful. Whatever success means to you, you don't know how long it takes. But if you just continue on the
path, you'll eventually get there. You know, if I had given up on this podcast six months in because
it wasn't, you know, the number one podcast in the world, I wouldn't have hit that tipping point
five years in. If I'd given up on my business because it seemed like it was stuck at the same
point, then I wouldn't have been able to hit the tipping point where they allowed us to grow and then
allowed us to start getting the revenue to be able to hire people and revenue to hire people,
revenue to hire people for it to be able to continue to keep growing. Sometimes things
just take a certain amount of momentum. And then once they get that momentum, it's hard to stop it.
Right? I always say the example of, you know, if you were to take a bowling ball and you were to go to the top of a hill and let that 15-pound bowling ball go,
and then you stop it 10 feet in, it's not going to be that hard to stop a bowling ball
10 feet into rolling down a hill. But if you go 100 yards down the hill and then you try to stop
it, it's going to break a hand. Sometimes what we're waiting for in life is just to feel the
momentum. And that's what we're really trying to work towards is the momentum being on our side.
And what's really important is when you feel that momentum on your side, don't stop. Just continue.
Push harder. Push harder. If I had given up on the podcast or my business or my fitness or any
of these things in my life, I wouldn't have gotten it to a certain point where I wanted to be. Same
thing for you. If you're really fit right now and you've been working really hard in your fitness journey,
you know what I'm talking about. It got to a certain point before you started seeing a lot
of momentum and it started, but you look at yourself in your five years, six years, seven,
10 years into your fitness journey. And you're like, yeah, I didn't have any of these results
my first six months. I saw some results. There was a little bit, but it wasn't like it is now.
Right? And so I want you to understand that. When you look back on your life,
what did you give up on too early? And where would you be today if you hadn't given up?
You know, think about your first diet where you were trying to work out and go on a diet and
create that life that you wanted. Where would you be right now if you had never given up on that diet? Think about your first business. Maybe it was seven years ago. Maybe
it was 17 years ago. Where would you be right now if you had never given up on that business?
Think about your first relationship. Where would you be right now if you had never given up on
that relationship? Just start thinking about these things. Where would you be? Let's just
take the business example. You had a business one time in the past. You gave up on that business. Where would you be now if you hadn't
given up? Or you had an idea, great idea for something, and you decided not to start it.
Where would you be now if you did start it and you didn't give up? Your life would be completely
different than it is now, right? And so I want you to understand, you might be in the beginning
of the process of building the life that you want. You might be in the middle of the process,
but what you've got to wait for is that Chinese bamboo moment where everybody says it takes 10
years to become an overnight success. That's what they're talking about. There's 10 years
of growing under the surface and growing your roots and growing your roots before you ever
pop out of the soil and start to grow. And so there's 10 years of work and work and work and work. It
takes 10 years to be an overnight success. And then overnight, boom, exactly like the Chinese
bamboo explodes 80 feet in six weeks. Most people start, they get excited to start.
They start getting excited. I'm going to start this business. I'm so excited to start this new
business. Oh, I'm so excited to start this new fitness routine. And they get all excited
about it. And they're excited to start, but somewhere along the way, they stop. They just
stop. They just stop pushing through. They lose the passion and they stop working towards what
it is that they want. And I like to make goals really simple. I like to make success really simple.
It only requires three things.
It requires direction, it requires action,
it requires time.
That's it, nothing else.
Direction, what are you working towards?
Are you heading in the right direction
that you need to be heading in?
That's the first thing.
This is what I want, this is what I need to do to get there.
The action side of it.
Are you taking that actual action every single day?
Are you consistent with that work routine?
Are you consistent with growing the business?
Are you consistent with your savings?
Are you consistent with whatever it is
you're trying to work out?
Your meditation.
Are you consistent with the action
that needs to be taken every single day?
So direction is important.
Are you heading in the right direction? Direction is way more important than speed. As long as you're
heading in the right direction, that's all that matters. You could be crawling, you'd be walking,
as long as you're not stopped. Direction, action, are you taking the right actions that need to be
taken? And then the last one is time. And we're not in control of time because everything has
its universal time of when it is going to come
into your life. So you can't control time. You've got to be able to head in the right direction and
take the right action and just know deep down inside of your soul that if you go on this path,
eventually you will get to where you want to be. Eventually you will get to what success means to
you, but you've got to take the action. You've got to head in the right direction and then just trust the universe or God, whatever it is you believe in, that eventually
you're going to get to where you want to go. And that is the last part of direction, action,
and time. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love this episode,
please share it on your Instagram stories and tag me in it, Rob Dial Jr. R-O-B-D-I-A-L-J-R.
And I'm going to leave
you the same way I leave you every single episode. Make it your mission to make someone else's day
better. I appreciate you and I hope that you have an amazing day.
