call the Mindset Messenger, which we send messages to your email, your inbox,
a couple times a week to help you grow and improve yourself. If you want to sign up for that,
it's absolutely free. Go to mindsetemail.com. Once again, mindsetemail.com. Today, I'm going
to teach you and talk to you about how to accomplish all of your goals, how to build
the life that you truly want to, how to get what you want in this world, and how to
accomplish things that you actually set your sights for, no matter where you are right now.
In fact, I don't care where you are right now. Where you are right now means absolutely nothing.
Your past does not matter. Okay, your past taught you some things. Sure, great. But your past has
nothing to do with your future. Too many people have their
past and they bring their past with them every single present moment. And they bring their past
to them and they create a future. And because they won't let go of the past, they create a future,
fast forward five years, that is identical to their past. And they're like, I don't know how
to break free of it. It's because you won't let go of what's already happened. And so today we're going to talk about where you're going. We're
going to talk, stop talking about all the crap that you've done and all the stuff behind you
and your trauma and all the stuff that's happened. And you know, how you wish that your dad would
have spent more time with you. You wish your mom wouldn't have yelled at you or how you wish your
little brother wouldn't have been the way they was, whatever it might be. We're going to let go
of all that stuff. It's on the past. We're just going to talk about where we're going. We're going to talk about the
future. First off, before we do this, I want to make you understand that we have been programmed
unconsciously, not purposely, not in a bad type of way, but we've been programmed. We live in a world
where almost everything happens right away. We have extreme convenience and that's great,
where almost everything happens right away. We have extreme convenience and that's great.
But also at the same time, it makes you think that everything is like that. If I want to know,
like yesterday, literally yesterday, my wife's mom was over at the house and we were watching some on TV and a guy misspoke. And he said that the moon is 250 miles from the earth.
And she's like, 250 miles from the earth? She's like,
I didn't know it was that close. And I was like, no, no, no, no, no. I think he meant 100,000 miles
from the earth. And they're like, really? Are you sure? And I was like, let's find out. And I was
just like, hey, Siri. Siri's like, yes. I was like, how far is the earth from the moon? And it was
like 239,000 miles or something like that is what I think that it was, right? I remember being a
child sitting around with my friends and we'd say something like,
well, I wonder how far the earth is from the moon.
And we'd sit there and we'd go, well, we can go to the library, and we'd have to ride our
bikes to the library.
And then we'd go to the library, and we'd have to find the encyclopedia.
And then we'd look for E and for, I should probably look for M.
So we'd look for M and for moon. And then we would get
the answer. Hopefully somebody didn't check out the M in the encyclopedias, right? But now it's
like near immediate. We have Amazon. We have Uber. Someone will come pick us up. We have food
delivery. We have Uber Eats. We have DoorDash. We have grocery delivery, Instacart, Whole Foods.
All of these things are like almost near instantaneous. If I want something delivered, if I want strawberries,
if I'm sitting on my couch and I'm watching YouTube and I see somebody eating a strawberry,
I'm like, man, strawberries sound really good right now. I don't have any. I don't have to
get off of my couch. I can pick up my phone. I can order strawberries from Whole Foods and I can get
it delivered to my house. A couple hundred years ago, if you wanted strawberries, you'd have to go buy the
seeds. You'd have to wait for the right time of the year. You'd have to plant the seeds. You'd
have to water the seeds. You'd have to take care of them for a couple of months and make sure
rodents didn't come and eat it. And then hopefully, hopefully one day they ripen and you can eat a
strawberry. Now you can sit on your couch and you can eat a strawberry.
Now you can sit on your couch, you can order them,
and within two hours some dude named Travis,
who's a student at the local universities,
is going to deliver them to my front door.
Right?
The only thing that doesn't happen is Travis doesn't feed me my strawberries.
That's about the only thing that doesn't happen, right? So we have been indoctrinated to believe and to think that everything should happen right away.
And it doesn't happen like that. It doesn't happen. The great things take time. Rome wasn't
built in a day. And so we're used to immediate gratification. What does this have to do with
today? That's not the way most things work. You know, like the example I always give is like,
let's say that you're a woman and you're pregnant and your husband comes up to you
a couple months in and he's like, hey, honey, listen, like I know this birthing thing is
supposed to take nine months. It'd be really good though if like we could get a vacation by the end
of the year. Do you think maybe you could get it done in like five or six months? You'd slap him in the face, wouldn't you?
Why? Because some things take time. The universe, God, whatever you believe in,
says that that child needs nine months to bake in order to come out the perfect child that you need.
That's what it's decided. That's the way that it is. You can't change that no matter how much you
want to speed up the process.
For some of you women who have had children before, you probably wish you could have sped
up that process, right?
Short, four extra months of my life without being pregnant, that would have been great.
But it doesn't work that way.
Some things just take time.
The universe has decided that in order for a child to be born, it's going to take around
nine months.
For you to get the life that you want, well, it's going to take the right actions, but
it's going to take a certain amount of time.
The only thing is you don't know how much time it's going to take.
So today I'm going to talk about the thing that you really can control.
You can't control the time because that's not really up to you.
What you can control is the direction that you're going and if you're heading in the
right direction, accomplish everything that you want.
The direction that you're going is more important than the speed that you're going.
Right?
So many people get a great business idea and they're like, I'm going to build this business.
And they start to build this business and three months in, they give up because they're
not doing a million dollars a month yet.
That's not how business works.
You look on
Instagram and you see this random kid that's 19 years old, talking about how he made $14 billion
through some random coin that you don't understand. And you're thinking, oh my God, I'm supposed to
become a billionaire in three weeks. No, that's not how it works. That's not how building a business
works. It doesn't blow up like that. It takes time. Businesses take time. The same way that
growing a child takes time. Businesses take time. Like same way that growing a child takes time. Businesses take
time. Like for my business, if I would have given up within three months because I wasn't a million
dollars yet, then I would have just, I don't know, I probably would have started something else and
then given up and then started something else and given up. It took my business three years to hit
a million dollars in a year. What if I would have given up in the beginning because I was,
oh, I wasn't there yet. Right.
I was just still making mistakes.
I was still figuring it out.
It goes back to like the, uh, Tony Robbins has a quote around this, which is people overestimate
what they can do in a year, but they underestimate what they can do in a decade.
Now that I'm, you know, what am I at?
I'm at eight years into my business.
I like really get that phrase now.
Like I understand it because I was thinking like, oh my gosh, I'm going to be making $500,000 a year the first year. Nope. That's not the way
that it worked. 60,000 was the first number. Okay. And then you build and you build and you build.
So we overestimate what we can do in a year, but we underestimate what we could do in a decade.
If you put a decade into a business, I guarantee you, if you put a decade of really quality
work in 10 years, that business is making way more money and way more successful than
you could actually realize and think in your mind, right?
It's like, if you know of this guy named Andy Fursella, he has a company and he runs a hundred
million dollars a year company now, but he slept in a warehouse and barely broke even for the first
two years. Most people are not willing to put in that hard time. They're not willing to put in that
effort, right? Everybody sees like, oh, I want to run a hundred million dollar a year company.
Yeah, no, I don't want to sleep in a warehouse though. I like my comforts. I like the way that
it is. Oh no, I like to be able to travel. I can't be broke for two years, right? He slept in a warehouse and barely broke even for the first two years.
So it comes down to like, how bad do you really want it? How bad do you want a different life
than you currently have? Are you willing to put in the work? You know, you don't have to live in
a warehouse if you don't want to. It doesn't have to be that hard, but you do have to realize that it's not going, I'm just telling you right now,
everybody listen, the life you want is not going to happen as fast as you want it to happen.
But that doesn't matter. Because once again, you're not in charge of the time that it takes.
What are you in charge of? The direction, the actions that you're taking. That's what you're
in charge of. Realize it's going to take time. We've been
taught this since we were children. We've been taught this since we were children. Slow and
steady wins the race. It's a tortoise and the hare. The tortoise wins because he's slow and
steady and he's just going for it. He eventually gets there. All you have to do is decide what it
is that you want. Decide, like really decide. And the root word for decide and
decision is dikadere in Greek, which actually means to cut off, which means to cut off all
other options. It's like, you know, the great Marshall Mathers, the philosopher, the quote is,
success is my only motherfucking option, failure is not. That's what you have to
decide. It's got to be like, this is it. There is no other option. And that's the only way. You just
can't give up on whatever it is. You just go and you don't stop. The only time that you fail at
something is when you give up. If you just won't give up, you can't fail. You'll eventually get
there. You'll figure out
whatever the missing pieces are in order to get you where you need to go. But you might not figure
it out in two months. You might not figure it out in a year. It might take you two years.
You'll figure out the missing pieces eventually. And I want you to think about this. Think about,
you know, you can't fail on something. You can't fail at something if you don't give up at it,
right? Think about the things that you've given up on in the past, the things that you, you really
wanted, like you really wanted to grow that business. And then it got a little bit harder.
It required, you know, you to be better at time management or quite a little bit more extra effort
from you. And that was seven years ago. Think about where
you could be right now in this moment had you not given up on whatever that was. Some of you out
there have, you know, a year ago you tried last New Year's resolution. You tried to lose weight
and you wanted to lose 40 pounds, but you gave up. Where could you be if you didn't give up?
If you just headed in the right direction
every single day, if you just would have pushed through the discomfort, because I'm just going
to be honest with you, your desire to stay in your comfort zone will kill your dreams.
Your comfort zone is where your dreams go to die. Your desire to stay where you're comfortable and
in this nice little spot, you might hate where you are, but you're comfortable. Your desire to stay comfortable will kill your dreams. So, you know, you really start to think
about that. We talked about how long it's going to take, what it could take. Do you have to give
that up? Let's talk about where you're going, right? The direction that you're going matters
and the actions that you're taking are what really matters. I always say it's very simple. Like,
going matters. And the actions that you're taking are what really matters. I always say it's very simple. Like I always try to take things that people act are very complex, super complex,
and just zoom out 50,000 feet and look down below. And I say, okay, if we look at goals,
what do goals need? They need direction. Are you heading in the right direction?
They need action. Are you taking the right action? And the last thing is they need time.
Oh, I'm not in control of time. That's right last thing is they need time. Oh, I'm not in
control of time. That's right. I don't control time and when I'm going to get the things that I
want. What can I control? I can control the direction that I'm heading, what it is that I'm
shooting towards, and I can control the actions I'm taking every single day. Because if you're
heading in the right direction, you're taking the right actions, and you just don't stop, you'll eventually get there.
So where do you want to go?
What is your destination?
I always use the example.
It's very simple.
I always say, like, I live in Austin, Texas.
North of Austin, Texas is Dallas.
If I want to get to Dallas, I could get there many different ways.
I could take a plane.
I could get in a car.
I could ride a bike. I could find in a car. I could ride a bike.
I could find a bird scooter.
I could walk.
I could crawl.
I could take any of those ways.
Are some of them going to get me there faster than others?
Of course.
But as long as I'm just heading north, no matter what means of transportation I'm taking,
but I'm just heading in the right direction, which is north, I'm taking the right action,
which is riding, walking, flying, swimming, whatever it might be to get there. As long as I'm
taking the right action, I will eventually get there. It might take me an hour. It might take
me a year. I'll eventually get there. So do you know where it is that you actually want to go?
Like, do you know what you want in your life? Like I always ask people, what do you want in your life?
And most people are like, well, you know, they give me this
really vague answer. And I'm like, you don't even know what you want, do you? Like, you've never
sat down and actually said, this is what I want in my life, have you? And they're like, no, not
really. Well, you're not going to get what you want in life if you don't know what you want in
life. You'll just get whatever it is that, you know, life gives you. So I want you to think of
your goals. Like, what are your goals for the next year? What's your goal for the next five years? What's your goal for the next 10 years?
And have you sat down with a pen and paper and asked yourself, like write down on a pen
and paper, what do I want?
And you answer that question.
Who do I want to be?
And you write down the answer to that question.
Who or how do I want people to talk about me at my funeral?
Which would be like, what characteristics, what habits, what traits do I want people to talk about me at my funeral? Which would be like, what
characteristics, what habits, what traits do I want to like the type of person that I want to be?
How much money do I want to make? You know what? I want to make a couple hundred thousand dollars
a year. Okay. Tell me why you deserve it. Write it all down. Why do you deserve it?
How are you going to do it? Where do you want to live? So many people just stay where they grew up
or stay where they currently are just because they haven't thought about thinking outside the box.
Then because moving somewhere else takes you out of your comfort zone.
Where do you want to live? Do you want to marry? Do you want kids? How many kids do you want? Do
you want a family? What do you want all of that to look like? If you have a family, what do you
want your family to look like? What do you want your relationship with each and every individual to look like that's in your family? And after you get really,
really clear on where you're going, aka what it is that you want, now you need to make a plan.
You have to have a plan to figure out, okay, I'm going to go from here to here. Like if you get
into your car and you're trying to get somewhere and you're going to go in and you're going to
probably go to Google Maps, you're going to put your phone, you're going to put the address to
your phone, right? And your GPS is going to figure out two things. It're going to go in and you're going to probably go to google maps you're going to put your phone you're going to put the address to your phone right and your gps is
going to figure out two things it's going to figure out number one where you are number two
where you want to go okay so you all know where you are right now we just talked about getting
very clear on where you want to go now you need to do what the gps would do in google maps you
need to figure out the plan you figure out the route of how you're going to get there do you
have a plan after you put all this together of where you're going and how you're
going to get there? You know, like I love the example of, you know, say we're in Miami and if
you don't, if you don't know, if you're in Miami, you can actually hop on a boat and you can hop on
a boat and get to the Bahamas. It's just a straight shot straight to the Bahamas, right? Let's say
that you and I, we wake up in the morning, it's a beautiful morning. We have a captain. We're going to hop on a boat and we're going to hop
on a boat with him. We wake up in the morning, we get six o'clock, sun's just starting to rise.
The captain's like, good morning, guys. We're like, good morning. We're like, hey,
go ahead and hop on. We hop on. We're like, where are we going? He's like, well, we're going to head
over to Bimini. And yeah, we're going to head over there. And you're like, okay, cool. How long is it going to take? He's like, oh, I don't know. I probably take like
three or four hours. Okay, great. Um, what direction are we going? And he like puts his
hand out and kind of waves it back and forth from left to right. He's like, it's kind of like in,
um, it's kind of like in that area. You're like, okay, that's kind of shady. He doesn't really
seem to know exactly where this is. And you're like, okay, what are the seas like? You're like, okay, that's kind of shady. He doesn't really seem to know exactly
where this is. And you're like, okay, what are the seas like? He's like, actually, I don't know
what the seas are like. I don't know about you. I'm not taking that ride to Bimini to the Bahamas
with this guy. There's no way. But if I get on the boat and I sit there and I say, hey,
how long is it going to take to get over there? He's like, oh, it's going to take about three hours and 15 minutes.
Okay, cool.
What direction are we heading?
Well, we're basically going to head east and a little bit northeast because it's a little
bit further up for us to get there.
But north, northeast is basically the direction that we're going to be heading.
And you're like, okay, how are the seas?
Oh, seas are great today.
I checked it.
A little bit of waves, about one foot.
That's about it.
You're going to be like, okay, cool.
He's like, yeah, go ahead and crack a beer. Go ahead and hang out on the top of the, on the
front of the boat. If you want to, you would feel much more comfortable. Wouldn't you? If you had
that type of person. Yeah. It's funny to think that you'd be like, ah, I don't, uh, there's a
captain. That's like, we're going to head in that direction. I hope. Right. It's funny to, but that's
how most people live their life of like, well, I, I think there might, I don't know, are there storms? There might be storms. Well, I'm heading
in that direction. I don't know how long it's going to take, right? Life is like a ship. You're
just floating around in the sea. You have no direction. You have no, you're just going with
the winds. You're going with the tides. You have to just put your sails down and say, I'm going to
head in this direction. I'm going to figure out how to get there, right?
And you have to make the decisions to do it.
And then after all of this, you create weekly and daily check-ins with yourself.
Every week, you see if you're progressing towards where you want to go.
And every day, you make a list of things that you need to do for that day to get you closer
to your goal.
It's really not that hard.
Realize this though, you will mess it up.
You'll mess it up over and over
and over again. You're going to screw this up 10, 20, 30, 400 times. It's okay. Just keep going
because with every mess up, you figure out what's not working and you make little tiny adjustments.
It's not about being perfect. It's about getting more tally marks in the win category than in the
loss category. You know, if you say, oh, I want to wake up early every single day and you wake up six days
a week and one day you screw up. Okay. Don't beat yourself up for the one screw up. Look at the six
that you did do well and say, okay, I did pretty good. I can celebrate myself for those six wins.
There's only one loss. Let me learn from this. Oh, what did I do wrong? You know what? I should
have gone to bed earlier last night. Okay. How can I make sure that I do that tonight? And just realize that you have to know where you're going. You have to know what
direction that you're heading in and you have to take the right actions each day to get there
because your direction is more important than the speed that you're heading. Time will work itself
out and time is either your best friend or it's your greatest enemy, but it will work its way out eventually. Bad habits? Yeah, time's going to
be your worst enemy. Good habits? Time's going to be your best friend. But the actions that you
take now and tomorrow and the next day are going to dictate what that relationship is going to be
like in five or 10 years with time. So that's what I got for you for today's episode. If you love
